With certain types of food context is key in figuring how to rate a particular restaurant. For example, I'm going to judge a Chinese place differently in San Francisco than in Boise. Nothing illustrates this idea more than when rating BBQ restaurants. Whether a BBQ place is "good" really depends on where you are at. Quality in Valparaiso can easily be mediocre in, say, Kansas City. That being said, I was pleased with my recent experience of Surefire. While I certainly wouldn't call it world-renown, for what we have available in the area it was very good. I had never eaten at the old location in South Haven, but I liked the new digs. The interior was modern and clean albeit somewhat sterile and unimaginative. We were immediately greeted and quickly served by the helpful and friendly wait staff. Previous reviewers' compliants of poor service did not pan out for us - our food was brought to us in reasonable amount of time and our server was very engaging and attentive. When they found out it was our first time, they even brought us complimentary basket of their homemade chips so that we could sample their three sauces. Honestly though, as long as the service and facilities are adequate, who cares? Ultimately, we came for the Q, and it was excellent. Having ordered the Pulled Pork, I was very impressed with its smokey flavor and tenderness. Piled high on a bun with coleslaw made the sandwich uneatable with the hands - just how I like it. I wasn't overly impressed with their homemade sauces, but of the three I found their Hot to be the best. It had a deceptive initial sweetness and came on strong late. In addition to that, the sides I ordered were okay with the baked beans being the highlight. I'm glad there's a decent smoked BBQ establishment in Valpo. From my experience they are few and far between in this area. But, I would wholeheartedly recommend Surefire if you're looking to scratch that particular itch.

I so badly wanted to LOVE this place. I LOVE wood fired pizza! I ordered two large pizza with one ingredient each. That should be enough for 3 people right? The large pizzas are tiny. One was missing an entire side. Ok well at least I got a huge salad! They cut the pizza wrong like Gelsosimos. There were at least 4 pieces on each pie that were the size of a quarter. Cuz they are trying to sell you however many slices. The pizzas themselves were delicious, but there was so little! This isn't thin crust it's a wisp of a crust. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious, but I would have to spend 60 bucks to feed three of us. The salad was fine except I had to add extra dressing. Both pizzas together weighed less than one pizza from Shoe's. I really wanted to love them I truly did. But when your largest pizza is only 14-16" and half of it is missing, that's not right. Anyone would be able to see this when cutting it. They were nice enough. I'll give them another shot ordering barbecue.

We bought takeout on Sunday around 5pm. It was the first time we had tried them. I went to pick it up and the renovations to the place were exceptional. Much more modern and clean than the previous restaurant. I had ordered the pulled pork sandwich basket with onion rings and my hubs got the rib tip basket with fries. I got it home and we started to eat. My pulled pork was excellent. I liked the memphi-lina sauce they used on it . It was smokey too. My onion rings were ok.. I like beer battered o rings, but the box they put it in collected the moisture and made them soggy. I'm sure they are better fresh. The white sauce was good with the onion rings. I would just buy the pulled pork by the pound with a huge side of memphi-lina sauce. My hubs rib tips were ok, they were spicy and a little charred. Not as much meat as he had hoped, lots of gristle. He would have preferred the memphi-lina sauce on them. His fires were the big disappointment. They were cold and limp. They claim hand cut fries, I can tell you they need to research a little bit on how to make fries from a raw potato and get them crunchy/crispy. Overall, I'd just get the pulled pork. But I still have to try the brisket. Update: I would like to add that it would be profitable for Surefire to get on Grubhub.com . As would most restaurants that deliver in Valparaiso.

The wood fired pizza is very good! Owners are very friendly. Service was a little slow but we weren't in a hurry. We had brisket pizza which was a nice blend of spicy and sweet. Also ordered the chicken salad sandwich which was flavorful. Fries were hot and crispy. Not sure it's truly Hannon's root beer but it is pretty close. Thanks for a solid meal! Reasonable prices too.

Tried Surefire for the first time and was very pleased with the staff, remodel of the restaurant and especially the food. The brisket is the best I've had. Will definitely return!

Okay, so before they moved from South Haven we went there several times for their iron worker sandwiches. They we absolutely delicious. Last night was the first time we tried the new location. I feel as if the place is having an identity crisis. Now, you are served instead of ordering at the register, they use glass drinking glasses although the menu is still paper and disposable. We ordered the smothered fries which were okay, although the menu said piled high... So we both expected a heap of them, which wasn't the case. My son had the chicken Alfredo soup which was good. My husband had the brisket sandwich which we both thought was small for the 9.55 price tag. The fries on his plate were pale and under fried. I ordered the iron worker, just knowing I was going to love my sandwich. When it came out something was different. I never really figured out what, but it tasted like just an okay sandwich, as where before my husband and myself used to crave their iron workers. It was such a let down. Another issue that needs bringing up was the incredibly slow service. The man making deliveries (who may have been a owner) even came up to us and said I am going to check on your food, you have waited an aweful long time. I mean it must have taken them 40 minutes to make our sandwiches. When I checked out I asked if it's the same owners as South Haven, to which they said yes. I then told them that the food was "different" she said different, ran my credit card and that was that. Sorry Surefire.... We won't be back.

I'm pretty sure I didn't have BBQ when I whet there but my husband did and he loved it. I really liked it but it had a few set backs. The building was kind of cold, I think because it has corrugated metal panels on the interior? Mom glad we got an appetizer because it seemed like the food took longer than normal, but overall pretty good experience.

Surefire was excellent as always. They moved from south haven and I was a customer at that location also. They have great sandwiches, and the barbecue is amazing. The remodeling they did at the new location is great and provides a good dinning experience. I went at lunch time and received good service. I recommend the pulled pork or the cuban!

Pulled pork sandwich with the mempha-lina sauce is awesome. Best pizza in Valpo! The crust isn't like the cardboard crusts found in Valpo! Suck it up a pay for each root beer! Figure 8 charges you for every mug! The peach cobbler is worth just a trip there by itself! Service will get better with time.

We went towards closing time on a Thursday night, not prime time. We were greeted warmly by the owners, seated and since it was my first time, they took time to explain the menu to us. Both my husband and I had the sirloin tips. They were very good and unlike some restaurants that you visit late, you could tell they had not been sitting around and had been made to order. We will definitely be back.

They are not ready for prime time yet. Poor service. Don't know about the food. Ours didn't come out with our friend's food. Theirs were cold. Ours non existent for close to 20 min. Told em we didnt want it. On top of that ours were pulled pork. So what was the wait about?

3.50 for a Hannon's rootbeer with no refills..smoked brisket that was sub par. The burnt ends should be ridiculously smokey, but tasted like rib tips from king gyros. I'll stick to northside BBQ

Do not eat there! The root beer is bought from a store, the food is spoiled and still served. They treat the employees terrible. Horrible!
