Little Tokyo Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

They really do deserve better than 2.5 stars, which is the current rating. I've been stopping by at this place since 2009. Since then, they really have stepped up. They are cleaner, nicer & have gotten much more professional overall. I would recommend just small portion carryout or small party dining, instead of bringing loads of people because they do take awhile to make stuff. Remember, UNLESS you want your food pre-made & heated up in a microwave, you will have to allow them some time to cook. Know what you're ordering, makis & rolls are handmade & they aren't fast foods. Nice people & tasty dishes. Also very cozy at night. Fresh sushi.

If you haven't been here in a while, try it again. There's a new chef and he's got a list of friggin' amazing rolls he's created just for the restaurant. My friends and I go there weekly and sometimes we have to break down and go twice a week because we get the DTs from lack of Ice Mountain and Lava rolls in our systems. If you're going here expecting someone to hold your hand and refill your glass the moment it's empty, you're going to be sorely disappointed. If you're going here because you want some interesting rolls, AMAZING ginger calamari, great soup, and piping hot and perfectly salted edamame, cha-ching! You got it.

Yikes. I don't think their fish is "fresh." That si scary seeing how this is a sushi place. Enough said.

Service The service here is absolutely horrible. I went there once a while back and was left sitting for 35 minutes and no one came to the table. I should have left. I was there with my boyfriend and my son last week as well. Service was fine while we were the only patrons in the restaurant. Close to the end of our meal about 3-4 other tables were filled and we were forgotten about. We sat for another 25 minutes waiting for our dessert when we finally asked someone for our check. After we paid and were about to leave, the server came running to us with our desserts and said they were free and apologized. A little too late. Food I order from them about once week, carry out of course. I really enjoy their miso soup, it's top notch. Their Philadelphia roll and shrimp tempura roll is delicious as well. I haven't found anything else all that enjoyable. We tend to order the same thing. Others have ordered with me before and not been all that impressed either. If you're gonig to try this place, definitely don't dine in. Carry out is the way to go. Try the miso and I hope you enjoy what you order!

Should've read the reviews before dining here. The place was sketchy as soon as we arrived. The service was bad. Our drinks were never refilled. As for the food, sushi didn't seem fresh and the chicken that was in my main entrée seemed like it was frozen and thawed numerous times. The texture was bizarre. The only good thing that we had was the crab rangoons. The atmosphere was tacky and didn't seem clean. We'll definitely never go back.

Stoped in for lunch to take advantage of my Groupon for this place and I was sadden to find the place so empty. Service couldn't have been more prompt and attentive, but that's not difficult I quess when I'm one of only a few customers. Given I'm local, from Munster, the staff took to ask if I had an impression of what folks in the area felt about Little Tokyo. I shared that some felt the service had become a bit slow and inconsistant over time, but that over all the food quality and taste was good. She was pleased to get some feedback and I'd like to look upon this as a gesture by Little Tokyo to right it's ship and return to a more conscientious, prompt, and pleasent service. I throughly enjoyed my spicy shrimp roll. My Seafood tempura had a delightful batter and crusting to it. In the mood for a noodle dish, they were happy to create a dish off menu simply by what I had a taste for. What arrived was a deliscious mildlly spicy dish spotlighted by a yellow curry featuring shrimp, chicken, pork, and vegetables much akin to a signapore noodle, All in all a great lunch. I will definately return, not just because I purchased a few more Groupons for Little Tokyo, but because I feel it important to support hard working local bussiness which aren't carbon copies of everywhere else to eat. Sure I'll have my occational Panda Express. Yet, it's nice to know that living in Munster, should the mood for sushi. sashimi, tempura, or an asian noodle dish strike me, I need only to jump over to Little Tokyo nearby to satisfy that urge.

Well, I concur with Julia W. about the service, it's just terrible. I've walked out b/c we were not brought our menu's after sitting there for 15 minutes (on my lunch hour). The food is not so good either. The "tempura" batter by no means resembles anything close to tempura, more like fried chicken batter. And the aftertaste is extremely weird. The sushi is OK at best. I feel generous with the 2 stars, but remember, it's NW Indiana and it's Japanese... (kind of)

The food was on the low end of OK, it's good for a quick fix sushi craving when you can't get anywhere else in good time to quench. Whether you have the owner serving you, or the high school student, who doesn't know a thing about sushi, at your service, you're doomed. The high schooler doesn't know anything about sushi, or even how their own menu is served, and the owner just seems to be there for the money. She never recognizes regulars and always asks if it's your first time. The worst part about it is they shove an 18% gratuity down your throat because they know they would never get tipped otherwise. There is not a sign on location stating this tip, or even on the Groupon that they had running; it just shows up on your bill. Not sure if I'd ever return, even if it's free.

Poor service, very low quality food. Quite possibly the worst sushi I have ever had. Don't bother.

I don't know what all the bad reviews are about but I read there is a new chef? Everything was wonderful here. We went in an hour before close & had a younger server. Usually younger kids get annoyed/just want to go home. He was AWESOME! We ended up leaving him almost a 50% tip. Sushi was the best in the region. Hands down. I think I'm going to try the Groupon.

*** Groupon Users Beware *** Well, I can't review the food because we never went to this location. The bad service started on the phone. I had a Groupon for $75. The Groupon said "reservations required" so I called and made reservations. Luckily I mentioned the Groupon. That's when problems started. I was told "that's not for our location" I was told the exact thing at their other location in Illinois. Kind of funny when their phone number is listed right on the Groupon! When I asked to speak to a manager I was told "no". Further, the person on the phone was very rude. I see others had a problem with their Groupon too so I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've used Groupon about 20 times before at other establishments and have never had one single problem. I'll be asking Groupon for a refund. *** EDIT: Response to Serena *** What about the other Groupon user that posted a review? I saw it was filtered. Her name was Sarah F. She claims you threatened to call the police on her. Don't feed me your lies. I have returned my Groupon and will not be dining at your restaurant. Also, I don't know how you remember when I called because you don't know who I am. I know for a fact that I'm not the only person that had a groupon issue at your location. I've used over 30 groupons with NO problems in the past until I tried to use yours.

I picked this place because of a really great Groupon and I was completely satisfied. It's a really quiet place, the tea was excellent, and our server was hilarious & prompt. The sushi came out perfectly. I can't wait to go there again.

Food was good and seemed fresh (saw a previous review saying it was not). Service was terrible. Had to ask for water, napkins, utensils. We didn't get plates to put our sushi on as well as our appetizers or sides. Since it's probably about the best sushi you can yet in NWI, I will probably continue to go here but for take-out only.

I came here today (instead of going to Dragon Bowl in Munster) because I like their lobster roll. I waited a good 15 minutes for the waitress to come and ask me if I wanted a drink. There were 3 other booths with 2 people in each. I ordered the few things on the menu I like, my favorite lobster roll didn't come instead she brought 2 dragon rolls, I can't eat them. I'm allergic to avocado. The waitress said 'you don't want dragon roll?' I said 'no, I'm allergic to avocado and I ordered lobster rolls'. She said she wrote down dragon and asked if I could have said it wrong......um no. I didn't. The chef in the back brought my correct order out very quickly, was super sweet and very nice. He redeemed my visit, slightly. I have been to this place about 20 times. The only time I have service that is horrendous is when this same woman (who seems to be there all of the time) is working. The key,I think, would be to sit at the sushi bar or come at night when she isn't working. She had her son or grandson with her one time and it was awful. He ran and screamed the whole time. She did nothing. Miserable. Food is 3-4 stars. Service with the woman is 1 star.

Went her after drinks at Cheers with two work friends about three weeks ago. Service was bad, was told when we entered that there would be a really long wait for any food. There were 8 people in the place and two people working the tables. Not 8 tables; 8 people. Took a long time to get water; food was at least 45 minutes and there were bones in the eel and I think the salmon. I can't remember the last one because that was kind of shocking. Advised the server when he came by (about 30 minutes after the food arrived) and he mumbled "oh". An apology, maybe the manager comes over, but nothing. We weren't looking for free food, just a whoops or something. One of my friends is a big sushi fan, the other was having it for the first time. This was not a good experience, I ate here once before and noticed a fishy smell in the air but the food was ok. My sushi friend has worked as a manager and district manager for Asian restaurants and really was disappointed in both the food and service. I'll drive to the city for my sushi.

    (1)
  • Robert G.

Unfortunatly this is like the only place to get sushi without driving all the way to the city. The service was ok when I was there, however the sushi was bearable but not he best quality.

    (2)
  • Jeri R.

Lets just say that I used to work here so I know things and despite the food being somewhat tasty that I would not eat here again.

Another great sushi place in the region...at last! It is hard to find good sushi in Northwest Indiana (NWI, "The Region" - like we belong to Chicago -, "The 219") . Now I am older, more refined, have traveled, experienced, and really learned...not all sushi is created equal. It used to be only House of Kobe for sushi here, how it's growing. This place was a fantastic find! I have had fast food sushi, horrible carry out only sushi, as well as random Miami and DC sushi. I have to admit sushi places are much more common along the ocean as well as very often much higher quality. So, leave it to a Midwest Native local gal to search, test, and review for there are less options available and less quality among our few choices when available. For we call Lake Michigan, "Going to the Beach." Laugh away, we do what we can. We even surf on simulators if cool enough to try. Haha. I visited with a friend about 60 minutes prior to close. We knew to be polite and not stall. I asked if we had time to eat without holding them over. The one man that past normal dinner hours Saturday night was our server, sushi chef, kitchen cook, and dessert chef. He must have been the owner. This was a DELIGHT. The sushi was fresh, delicious, and correctly priced. The rice & shrimp dish was HUGE and well made. This friend always gets the rice dishes when I want sushi so double food review! Haha. The portion was plenty that I shared my sushi rolls and he shared his rice, and we JUST were able to finish it all and still squeeze in dessert. Dessert here was dirt cheap, but the quality was excellent. We had the fried tempura ice cream, that tasted JUST like an elephant ear filled with ice cream. Then for just I believe $1, maybe two, I got Mochi ice cream. I am LOVING Mochi!

  • John T.

Pretty pricey for what you're getting. The sushi was ok, but nothing to truly rave about. Nonetheless, the service was good and it was a clean restaurant. It's nice to not have to go that far for decent sushi. It is MUCH better than the sushi at House of Kobe. Just wish they had a greater variety. Also, it'd be nice to see a bit more given for the amount charged. Definitely worth a shot if you're in the mood for decent sushi.

Food is good but the service sucks. The owner's wife is always taking the orders and she is very goofy, forgetful or charge you for more items.

  • Toni T.

Best sushi around. Period. Haven't had a roll I didn't like. Service is good if you are the only person there and the guy is working. If the women are waitressing it is chaos. We went almost an hour without one of our rolls and they kept coming and asking us if we had everything. Yet never fixed the problem. Seems to be slow every time. Slow service is worth it if I get good sushi though, so I will be back!

The food was ok, nothing that special. I was really worried because I told the waitress that I'm allergic to shellfish and she kept pointing out things on the menu that were 'very good' and they all contained shellfish. I ended up getting tuna, salmon and a chicken thing that was cooked with rice and fish eggs. It was pretty good. I've had better in Chicago of course. I really liked the red bean ice cream they had.

  • Karen F.

I have been to Little Tokyo many times and the sushi is usually pretty good. This time, however, was much different. They used canned tuna fish and canned salmon for the two rolls I ordered. Technically, they served what I ordered but I was just amazed that it wasn't fresh fish. They have never done that before, but they still charged the same prices. It's not cheap so I was extremely disappointed. I am not sure I will ever return because that is a real sign of trouble. Too bad because it used to be very good.

If your a sushi nut as am I, I highly recommend this place! The rainbow roll special is absolutely delicious and always fresh. This will be my sushi spot from now on!

  • D. S.

This place has fantastic fried rice but that's where it ends. The manager was totally rude when answering the phone, "What you want!". The sushi was bushi! It was bland, small, and the rice was overcooked. I ordered carryout but when I went to pick up my order, I was nauseated by the smell of the place from outside. The decor inside reminded me of my parents garage circa 1981 minus the Asian element. This place stinks.

    (1)
  • Jessica L.

Sushi is amazing there! But, the service not so good. We waited about 20 min before we ordered and getting our check took forever. Getting a refill was out of the question. But it seems to be a great place to go if no one else is there. I will still return because the food was great.

  • Heather H.

Got carryout...sushi was great as was the miso soup. Got the California roll dinner, spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado roll, and eel cucumber roll along with tako su (octopus). All good stuff.

  • Carla C.

If you don't mind a sticky table, dirty dishes, and a chef that doesn't know the menu you might be ok here. I ordered a Crazy Roll. The menu describes it as pepper tuna, avocado, with spicy tuna on top. When brought to me it had cucumbers in it and no avocado. I said this is supposed to have avocado and he said no it didn't come that way. I pointed out the menu said it did so he did give me a side which was nice but I don't really care for cucumber. The spicy tuna and the wasabi were pretty bland too. It wasn't inedible just not good enough for me to go back.

After leaving a review stating that they will not take coupons I got a response back stating I am lying! So to further explain my friend and I went in for lunch. We had a coupon from Verizon points that had NO restrictions on it it was for 20% off. When we attempted to use it we were told they did not authorize the coupon and if they did they wouldn't take it because we for lunch specials. Again it had no restrictions on it! We contacted Verizon who stated the coupon was authorized by the business.

Amazing sushi!! I have tried many different rolls here. The specialty rolls are delicious. I highly recommend the firecracker roll and the bill roll. I also enjoy the gyoza. The service is slow, but totally worth it. Friendly staff. Intimate atmosphere. They also have great lunch specials. There have been groupons as well for this place! Good deal overall as well. Highly recommend!! My favorite sushi place in the region.

Every time I am in the area I stop by Little Tokyo. Love the food. Love the laid back atmosphere. Love the wine. During each visit, we have a chance to sample the latest offerings and give an opinion. Don't go if you are in a hurry but do be polite and you'll most likely make a new and generous friend.

  • Sherry D.

First you need to be aware of the cultures. They are laid back and there can be a language barrier. Not a biggy. Maybe it's a sign to relax, slow down and enjoy. I never liked sushi until I tried this place. The plum wine is excellent also. Everytime my friends and I go there the chef is bringing us a new roll. Never disappointed. We usually leave stuffed. The owner is friendly. Again slow down, relax and enjoy. Love this place.

All four stars are for the MOST WONDERFUL Special Veggie Roll! Holy cow, it was fabulous. I am not the biggest fan of sushi- don't really like the seaweed wrappers- but with the soy wrappers....WOW! Also tried the avocado salad. Not the biggest fan of iceberg lettuce- but one taste of the ginger dressing and I forgot all about what it was dressing! The service was a little slow, but very nice. I ended up going twice in one week, yup- I like it.

Dirty tables, service was sad, food was fishy tasting (bad sign for freshness) price was high.

  • Dan G.

I walked in around 5:30 and was seated with my wife. There was a wide variety of sushi items ready to be freshly prepared. The music and atmosphere was fitting of what one would expect of a sushi restaurant. The service was very friendly and I will definitely come back again. I could hear the phone ring a few times and the waitress took some carry out orders. That just showed me that there's a demand for the food.

I was not happy with Little Tokyo. My first impression of Little Tokyo was this place needs a makeover and then what is that smell. The place is cluttered and needs cleaning. I copied this part from a yahoo review. If I could give this place less than 1 star I would. I used to eat here all the time, and so I inquired about a job and got it. I worked here for a brief 2 days. In those 2 days I witnessed a waitress drop food and get SCREAMED at in the face in front of the house full of customers, meat and veggies being prepared on the same surfaces, and a big pile of wasabi in the middle of the kitchen that was being RE-USED from other people s plates. Seriously, I tried to throw it in the garbage and, just like the crying waitress previously mentioned, was screamed at and told to put it in the pile. Oh, and did I mention he never had me fill out a W-2, and when I asked him about it he said he didn't even know what that was. Someone should call the health department on this guy. Do not eat here.

Why didn't I know there was a sushi place 5 minutes from my house?Maybe I missed the fliers,or they need to step up advertisement.Anyhow,it's in Munster, and it's good!Gonna have to try some of the fancier rolls as what I had was fairly standard, but all very tasty.Prices were similar to Chicago(moved here recently),but since I don't have to drive to Chi for good sushi,it's still a deal. Thanks, and looking forward to sitting at the bar and complimenting the chef next time:)

I wanted to try this place out for a while but it never worked out until now. After reading some of the previous reviews, decided that take out would be the route to go for this first time. Couldn't find a menu online, so couldn't call in an order for time savings. It was a weekday in the early afternoon when walked into the restaurant, was greeted quickly and asked if dining in or take out. After saying take out, had a menu and was choosing what to order. A take out order was leaving after started looking at the menu. Another take out customer came in while still trying to decide what to order. After the take out customer left I placed the order of one salmon sushi, one shrimp sushi, one king crab sushi, one eel sashimi, one eel avocado roll, and one miso soup. While the chef/greeter was preparing my order, more customers came in and were greeted with dining in or take out. They were dining in and were told that they could pick any place to sit. Have had limited sushi experience so am not an expert, but would give the following: Eel avocado roll -- 4 out of 5 eel -- 4-1/2 out of 5 salmon -- 4 out of 5 shrimp -- 2 out of 5 king crab -- 4 out of 5, would have been a 5 but had bones that weren't expected miso soup -- 3-1/2 out of 5 So for take out ordering, will give a rating of 4 stars. Will go back in the future to try different offerings, and it probably will be take out again.

i agree w/ hollie about giving this place a chance. my husband and i ate here friday the 13th. we ordered the following rolls: lava lobster tempura california volcano spider food was fresh. tasted good. presentation was excellent. the only issue i had was w/ the waitress - and that was only because she is brand spanking new at waitressing. this is not a reason to not go back. very good food, wait time was nominal. we are going back for dinner tonight.

Like Julia W. mentioned, I don't wanna have to do this especially to such a family-owned restaurant, but I have to. The place is actually owned a Chinese family, despite being meant for Japanese cuisine. Like many people around me, my dad had a Groupon for this place, $45. On the door, there's a sign reading a 15% gratitui charge for all Groupon-using customers. Don't exactly know what that meant, but it probably wasn't good. We came with five people, there's six people in my family and one was out at a Mexican place with friends. In a restaurant, unless there's not much of a wait in between dishes or unless it is appetizers, food should not be arriving seperately and should generally be served together. The order and arrangement in which the food was served was very sloppy. My mom ordered vegetable rolls, I ordered a spicy tuna sushi. They put the five-piece orders on the same plate. My mom didn't even know that the vegetable rolls was a sushi order of five pieces, and not vegetable egg roll. By the time someone's order arrived, someone would already be finished with their food. So by the time my order arrived, she basically sat there eating left overs or people's unwanted parts. It was just generally sloppy. The service was good and hospitable, but they lack order when they serve you the food. The next thing you know, there's a bunch of random plates on the table and nobody which one is who's. People are eating while some others, already finished, are sitting there watching. Let's talk about food quality. The food quality is a joke. I ordered their filet mignon stir fry and this isn't the place to eat it. It was horrible. The beef was too moist, and the vegetables tasted no different than a microwaved product and just "a little" better than crap served at my school cafeteria. I'd had filet mignon at places like House of Kobe or B.C. Osaka and what Little Tokyo considered a dish of such a name is far from it. My sisters ordered their terryaki seafood platter, it sure may sound very delicious. They did not like it and offered me to try it and I "tasted" why they did not like it. Like the "filet mignon stir fry", it tasted like they bought the seafood products from a frozen package, threw it into a pan and slapped some generic sauce onto it. The shrimp is only thing that tasted authentic. The salmon and scallops didn't taste like they were fresh or quality-cooked. Their soda drinks aren't refillable either. Their sushi was actually pretty good. So that's basically the only thing keeping me from giving this place a one-star. So, I'd go here JUST for the sushi, not their food. The place has a pretty ornate design, so that also keeps me from giving it a one-star. So yeah, not a good Japanese place to eat at. Not to mention, there's one waiter too, I understand it is a small place but come on now. You wonder why it is so disorganized.

  • Julia W.

I hate doing this. I don't like to give little places that are obviously struggling bad reviews. But I feel obligated to warn people--Little Tokyo is not so good. I was so excited to see a sushi place open near my hometown and I had very high hopes. The small yet empty dining room was my first sign that things might not be tops at Little Tokyo. Now, I am by no means a sushi expert, but I have had my fair share of yumminess (hello, Tank!) in this fair city of ours, so I feel I have a somewhat discerning sushi palate. The fish at Little Tokyo is not all that. It's not very fresh tasting (why oh why did my saba taste a bit like canned tuna? I mean, I like canned tuna and all, but not when I'm expecting delicious mackerel!), it's sort of sloppy looking and they didn't even have one of the maki I ordered. The food was edible but certainly not memorable and the service was simply abysmal. I mean TERRIBLE. We were the ONLY people in the whole place--the water glasses should've stayed full, plates should've been cleared away... I wasn't sure if it was our waitress' first day on the job or if she was just reeeeally dumb. And I feel terrible saying something like that, but gawd--this was the exchange: "Do you want anything else?" "Nope, we're all finished, thank you." [awkward silence].... "Do you want me to bring you the check?" Ummm.... yeah. At least the lighting was kinda cool...
