After reading reviews in here we were really excited to try Satay House. Unfortunately the food was simply sub par. We ordered three entrees to share and the chicken satay as a starter, thinking a place named Satay House must pride itself on the satay. The flavor of the chicken skewer was good but the peanut sauce was lacking any real flavor. The pork with cabbage and mushrooms appeared to be little more than those three ingredients with a little unseasoned soy sauce. The chicken curry was the best of what we tried. The primary plus was that it seemed to use whole chicken that was nice and tender (rather than bland boneless skinless). The bottom line: though I really want to support two female entrepreneurs, I can't recommend this place, and with Cambodian Thai and JW Chens in town, I can't imagine coming back.

It's a hole in the wall BUT the people were VERY nice and welcoming. The 3 of us ordered 2 dishes, and it came with 2 egg rolls; the owner then brought is a third egg roll saying she didn't want us to fight over it! The drinken noodles and yellow curry were very good. I didn't mind the paper plates since the food was food.

I'm Malaysian. The owners are wonderful and friendly . The food however was not authentic Malaysian food. As far as taste goes, the food is edible enough...if you don't know what authentic Malaysian food taste like. The Roti Canai/Pratha was terrible, flat and crumbly and not fluffy and the curry to watery and not much flavor. If you've had good Malaysian food before, you'd be quite disappointed. However if you like just generic Asian food, it should be fine. Cambodian Thai is still the best place to get authentic Asian food in this town. I would like to reiterate that the owners and workers were lovely though. It was just disappointing because I was so looking forward to finally having some Malaysian food, and frankly, my home cooking is preferable to what I got served. To me anyway.

After reading the two reviews this restaurant had, I decided to drive by and check out if the place was actually there (I hadn't noticed it before). To my surprise, the inside of the restaurant was a lot more welcoming than the strange looking exterior. As it was said before, this is more of a carry out place so there are only four tables inside if you decide to dine in. Nevertheless, the owners were very receptive and the food was delicious. I ordered the chicken satay, which despite being very small was very well seasoned and came with a very good peanut dipping sauce. The chicken rendang was great, and I thought it was very nice that they actually use fresh coconut to cook it, it adds a lot to the flavor. My girlfriend tried the ba mee (which was good) and the roti with condensed milk (which was awesome). I'll definitely be back. My only complaint is the price. I think it was a bit steep given the size of the portions.

Satay House is a GREAT PLACE for Thai and Malaysian food. The homestyle cooking is so authentic that you feel you are either in Asia or at your favorite Asian Aunts' house for dinner. I would Highly recommend Satay House in South Bend IN to anyone wanting to have authentic, homestyle Thai and Malaysian cooking. Lily and Anna's service truly makes you feel like you're a part of a family, enjoying a delicious, authentic, home-cooked meal. My husband and I go as often as we can, whenever we are in the area. We have enjoyed the Joy Noodle, Roti bread with condensed milk, Sweet Chicken, Mi Goreng, Chicken Rendang, and we plan on adding more to this list! This place is a MUST!

Let's not keep this place a secret! Cute little place, not much room so far to eat inside, but the food is absolutely delicious. I had the chicken garlic and the owner was gracious enough to let me sample their beef curry and chicken curry dishes and both were delicious. I will definitely be back.

Thanks for the heads up, Juliette! I'm very impressed and pleased with the Satay House. Juliette pretty much captured it all in her review, so I won't bore you with the details. Read her review if you want to know more. I grabbed a late lunch here today... actually just as they were closing for the afternoon break at 2 pm. I ordered the Roti with the beef curry dipping sauce... I've usually only had Roti with chicken curry, but this was very good. I'm usually not a huge fan of beef curry because the beef can be a bit hard and dry. Not the case with this. I will definitely order it again. I also had the Pork with Cabbage lunch special. It was a ground pork cooked with cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, spices, and a side of rice. I ordered it a 10 on the spiciness scale, but actually added some more chili sauce to it to kick it up a notch. Lunch comes with a drink, water or soda. Even with the Roti, I was set back less than $10... and these were not small portions. I actually took half my Pork and Cabbage home... If you like Southeast Asian food, you will absolutely love this place. Please give it a try. I'm making it my mission to keep this place open. It is really good food and a great value! (Bear in mind it is a tiny place, so carryout is probably your best option during busy times of the day.)

I came here with a group of my friends the other day and we were very satisfied. The service was amazing and even though there were only one or two cooks, the quality was very nice. Because of the small setting, I felt like I was eating a home cooked meal at home. We ordered the pad thai, green curry, garlic chicken, peanut sauce chicken, veggie eggroll, drunken noodles, and fried rice. We also had thai iced tea with cream (which she gave us free refills). We all shared together and every plate tasted good. We ate at a spicy level of 6, but I felt like it wasn't even spicy. We all added siracha on top of that. Even though the outer appearance is kind of sketch, it's definitely worth a visit. We will be back hopefully.

0-star: People who rated this food as good have not experienced good asian fusion food. The food was no where near good. It was sweet. I can take it if it were bland.. but no, it was sweet! I usually love the roti in asian fusion restaurants.. but the roti here was terrible, raw and half cooked. The peanut sauce totally lacked taste. We were completely disappointed that the reviews were so misleading! One week of staying around SouthBend and this was the worst food we had!

Great Malaysian food (haven't tried the Thai yet). The staff is really friendly and helpful. They have no problem making things Thai hot. This is my favorite place to eat in town. I can't say what I like the best because I've liked every dish I've had. They even made me a special Malaysian dish not on the menu once when I asked for something different.

It's not beautiful, but it is fantastic! Best Thai food I've had since moving to South Bend and very friendly service. The kitchen is open, so I could see them preparing everything and it all looked clean and fresh. Keep in mind that the 1-10 spice scale is per Thai taste not American. I ordered everything 5 or 6 and it was spicy! Delicious though. I plan to return often.

Holy cow! Never did I think that I would be able to eat Southeast Asian food in this area! But then comes along Satay House and all my culinary dreams are fulfilled. The exterior is nothing exciting and if you're driving too fast you would probably miss it. But once inside, the place is clean and the staff is very friendly. We went for dinner last night and the owners were there to cook and serve us. There are four tables for eating, although it's more of a take out type of place. The food is served on plastic/styrofoam and the radio plays over the speakers. Now on to the food! We had chicken satay, curry puffs, roti canai with beef curry dip, and beef curry with rice. Having grown up in Singapore, I have tasted all these items before, so feel I can give a pretty good review of the quality. The chicken satay was delicious, perfectly spiced and the peanut dipping sauce excellent. Would definitely order this again. The curry puff was good, nice crisp outside crust, but the stuffing was a bit bland to me. I kicked it up by adding some sambol olek (chili sauce) that was available. (I probably should make a disclaimer here: I like spicy food, so for me what is bland is probably very tasty for someone used to American food.) The beef curry was delicious, with lots of beef and green beans, and a few potatoes. It came with a serving of jasmine rice and we very happily ate it all. Again, I would prefer that it had more of a kick to it, but my husband thought it was perfect. We will definitely try the chicken rendang next time as well. Now on to the roti canai. I LOVE roti canai. No, you don't understand. I crave it in my sleep. So I was most excited to try this bread (roti canai is a bread that is similar to Indian paratha, but usually is very light and flaky and quite greasy). The roti at Satay house was not what I am used to, but I am prepared to let it slide. The owner/cook told us that it was her family recipe and that is probably why is had a different texture than what I have been used to. It was heavier, but less greasy, which is a good thing. The dipping sauce was the same curry we ordered, so if you're going to order the beef curry, don't get the option with the beef dipping sauce. I will be ordering the roti again, because what's better than bread dipped in a good sauce? On my next visit, I am planning on getting the mee goreng (stir fried noodles with yummy stuff), the veggie egg rolls, and then ask the chef to make me something yummy not on the menu (this is an option on the menu). Vegetarians might be put off by the menu not having many entrees without meat, but if you ask, you can have the noodles and fried rice done meatless. There are enough of the appetizers and side dishes to make a meal. I hope to see more vegetables on the menu in the future as well, perhaps a cucumber salad and a vegetable stir fry. Again, the owners were very friendly. Anna is from Borneo and Lily from Thailand and we enjoyed talking with them about food and travel. Anna has a great sense of humor, so don't forget to chat up the staff! Note: I am calling it Southeast Asian, because this place serves Malaysian/Thai/Chinese/Singaporean food. It will be spiced differently than Chinese, but in my opinion is so much better.

In this small ex-fast food place is concealed one of the better restaurants in this whole area; don't be fooled by the plain exterior, or even the plain interior, because inside you'll find fresh, homestyle Malaysian fare and a pair of wonderfully friendly and warm hostesses. A friend and I wandered out yesterday to try this place out; we were a bit skeptical as we drove up, given that it's built out of the hulk of an old fast food restaurant, but we hopped out of the car and were immediately greeted at the door by the owners, Anna and Lily. A quick aside on them: Anna and Lily are amazingly friendly, generous, and more than happy to chat about anything and everything, from travel to post-college life to marriage. Apparently I look quite a bit like her son, and they were pleased that my friend and I are both studying Asian languages (Mandarin for me, Japanese for him) and encouraged us to travel in Southeast Asia someday, a recommendation I'll be more than happy to take. Now, back to the restaurant; as yet both the exterior and interior are pretty plain, but everything is spotlessly clean, kitchen included, and they're laying plans to decorate. The food is excellent; we decided to order the beef curry, moderately spicy (7), and the Mee Goreng, as hot as they had an option for (10). The curry was excellent; reminded me quite a bit of a Chinese-style curry, with a more heavily-spiced sauce, no coconut milk, and potatoes and other vegetables not usually found in South Asian curries; this makes sense, it was probably imported by the Chinese minority in Malaysia. Made me nostalgic as heck, it was just that good. The Mee Goreng was also very good; yellow noodles stir-fried with mustard greens, green onion, cilantro, and beef flank in a soy-based sauce. The nice change of pace from Chinese was that everything was only minimally oily. In addition, Lily and Anna handed us a platter of homestyle roti canai to go with our curry, free of charge. Their family recipe is a bit heavier than ordinary roti, and a little crisper, but actually less greasy; it was excellent. Also, the noodles improve to even better heights the second time you eat them; as with certain kinds of rice, a bit of aging is a good thing. Leftovers, yum. People, seriously, get your butts out there and support Lily and Anna; the food is excellent, but they said business has been a bit slow, and their food is well worth the short trek from town or, for my fellow lethargic ND students, campus. Happy eating!

Owners are some of the nicest people around. Food is all homemade and fresh! You can't go wrong with the chicken rendang or chicken and rice when they have it. Only complaint would be food being a little pricey but that's the price you have pay for real fresh food!

Just so you know how much I love this place, I'm writing from Central Coast California. My sister and brother-in-law kept on raving about how awesome Satay House was, so when I visited them in Michigan, we drove to Indiana just to have lunch at Satay House. I was NOT disappointed! Driving down the street it may be easy to miss this place and the restaurant interior isn't anything overly spectacular. However, owners Anna and Lily make the place shine! The customer service is AMAZING. They make you feel like you've known them for years, and they accommodate vegetarian diets, too! Don't eat meat? No problem! They've got lots of tofu, veggies, and sauces, etc. They also have Thai Tea! The Joy Noodle is to die for. Their prices are VERY reasonable and affordable. They're also generous with their portion sizes. You will leave Satay House full, satisfied, happy, and ready to plan your next meal there. They also cater for parties so call them up! :) I can't wait to come back and eat at Satay House whilst having great company!

Been here 9 months trying to replace my favorite thai place from Atlanta. Was going to try takeout from Lucky's Donuts tonight but apparently they close at 7. I scrambled to find a place to satisfy my craving so I typed in Thai food on my maps app. Yelp had it at a 4-star ranking so I thought let's give it a try. So glad I did! Got the pad thai noodle with chicken and some vegetable egg rolls. Both were delicious! I will be coming back for more!!!

Just dropped by there for the first time yesterday; was out running errands, and Thai/Malay sounded like it would hit the spot. Prices were a little higher than I expected, but then again, I met the owner on the way to the door at about 3pm and they are closed between 2 and 5pm. She still invited me in and cooked up a meal just for me. Lily, the owner (I assume), was far beyond gracious. I ordered an ice tea with cream, a small bowl of tom yam soup, and a small portion of Thai Drunken Rice. The soup was phenomenal. I ordered it at 10 on the heat scale, and boy was it. But flavorful, fresh ingredients, tasty broth, mushrooms, and shrimp...the best tom yam I've had outside of the Chicago area, and maybe the best period. The "small" portion of Tofu Drunken Rice was too much for me to finish! And savory, oh my gosh, was it good. This was not the cheap version of Thai food you'll find around here. Even the tofu was pan-seared to perfection. I am giving this a five, and am planning on returning soon. If you get a chance to talk to Lily, please do. She's a terrific cook and a down-to-earth woman running what may be the best fusion restaurant in town. It's not fancy; no show-off dinners here. But it's GOOD.

Ordered take out tonight (Pad Thai, drunken noodles, chicken satay and Tom Kha soup) and everything is WONDERFUL! Perfect balance among noodles, veggies and meat; happy with everything I ordered! I forgot to order mine spicy, so can't say anything about that yet..... The owner was very friendly and accommodating, has lots of menu items and I can't wait to try some of her other dishes! I'll definitely be back (OFTEN!!) and can't wait for them to be open during lunch hours! I hope this place sticks around for a very long time!

So happy to have found really good Pad Thai in town. I can't wait to try more items on the menu. Hoping word gets around about this place. I got take-out. The staff was super friendly and fast.
