I've been coming here for quite a while and can't believe I have yet to write a review. The coffee is pretty decent, as are the rest of the drinks. The pastries are decent as well but it's the atmosphere that gets me. I love how grungy the place is and how wild the decor and staff are. Good stuff if only for the ambiance.

Great atmosphere, great people, but the coffee just isn't that great. Maybe it's just me, but it always tastes a little burnt.

A great place to study/hang with friends. Drinks can be better if the makers are trained better. Had trouble after having their bubble tea twice before. Not so good restrooms (not sure how it is now)

This hidden gem is so hip it hurts. 1. Loved the artsy, hipster feel to the space. The chalkboard menu was super cute. 2. The iced coffee was delicious! I added hazelnut syrup and cream. 3. Very creative names for their drinks. The Chai-coffsky (I apologize if I'm spelling this wrong). Half Chai, half coffee. How cute is that? 4. Friendly customer service. 5. Baked goods that make your mouth water just looking at them. They also offer vegan items if you're into that. Will definitely being grabbing another cup of joe from Soma the next time I'm in Bloomington!

My first workday in Bloomington and I decided to choose this location to set up my station since I passed it so many times over the weekend - at least until lunch time. It's a cute little place - I hear there are other rooms, but I stuck with the main one by the cash register since I needed to buckle down and work. The faster I finish, the earlier I could go out and explore some more. From what I could tell, though, it was cozy and comfortable. Their menu is quite crowded. I stood there for a good couple of minutes trying to decide what to get. I ended up getting the large (20 oz) of ChaiCoffsky which came in a paper cup - half coffee, half chai latte (you get to fill up the cup with as much coffee as you'd like and they fill up the remainder with the chai latter and foam). I also took a look at their baked goods and chose the vegan Linzer cookie to go with my drink. First, it's not quite a traditional Linzer (2 cookies with the top half having a "window" sandwiched together with a jam filling in the middle). It was more like a giant thumbprint cookie with a thin layer of jam in the middle, but whatever. :) I just wanted something to munch on. The cashier man (I believe he had facial hair) seemed nice enough, but not all that friendly. OK, he was... but mainly to regulars. To me, he was just doing his job. There was nothing there and I even felt a hint of... disdain? After I told him I wanted the large, I also added how it was because I would be there a while. He didn't catch it so when I repeated myself, he didn't look all that excited. Well, that made me feel particularly welcome. Either way, I didn't let that get me down. I was there to explore Bloomington's independent coffee shops and to work. I got a nice table all to myself. The ChaiCoffsky wasn't really sweetened - or perhaps the chai latte originally is but with the other 50% (I tried to make it as even as I could) of black coffee, it probably diluted the sweetness down a bit. I liked it and the foam on top was nice, too. I also tried the Linzer halfway through. The cookie itself was good - a little crumbly in a whole-grain way (not the buttery shortbread crumbly) and there was a perfectly even and thin-ish (around 2 mm - maybe 3) layer of jam in the middle. I liked it - not all that sweet. I probably could have had it without coffee, though it might be a little on the dry side. All in all, I was happy with my drink and snack. My work station was good and I was also in a good place to look up and people watch when taking a 5 second break between work. I ended up leaving around 3 hours later when I finally finished all of my emails. During this time, I realised a lot of the patrons were regulars with a mixture of college students all the way up to those who looked like they were around retirement age. Many of them knew each other. Yay for diverse groups of people! The actual room wasn't the brightest or had too much natural lighting, but I wouldn't call it "dimly lit" either. It provided a good studying/reading/catching spot. Not to mention the fast Internet! It also turned out Mr. Facial Hair speaks Tibetan fairly well - or at least I heard a Tibetan greeting (I had traveled and stayed in some Tibetan villages for fifteen days 7 years back; definitely nowhere long enough to learn anything aside from the basic phrases, though) from two guys and next thing I know, he was conversing back. Despite the lack of friendliness from Mr. Facial Hair, when I left, I decided to go back up to the counter (Mr. Facial Hair wasn't there at this point) to ask where to purchase band aids in the area since I didn't see many drug stores when I tried to search for it on my phone's map. The two guys that replaced him were pretty helpful and even asked their manager for me. I may return again to work later on this week. It's a pretty good place and though their menu is a little overwhelming for a newcomer, I would love to try some of their other drinks. After all, it was an excellent place to work. :) Plus, Mr. Facial Hair won back some points when I found out he knew Tibetan.

Holy hell this drink is good. I ordered the "Miele" which is a latte with honey and cinnamon. It was delicious. It took me about 3 minutes to figure out what I wanted after trying to make sense of their menu - it's a little crowded. It's got a cool patio with recycled furniture and market lights. Pretty cool vibe. I really enjoyed the latte. Very well done.

I wish this place would have been here when I attended IU. This is a nice little local coffee shop with a college feel. It is hidden away in a basement of sorts with multiple rooms often full of young minds cranking away. Not much goes together better than coffee and studying....except maybe beer and studying but I digress. When here, we ordered a traditional macchiato and a Vietnamese coffee (espresso and condensed milk). I often find that a traditional macchiato is a true test of a good coffee shop. This one was good and strong. Also, the Vietnamese coffee was rich and delicious. I would definitely visit Soma again. Next time you're in downtown Bloomington and need a caffeine fix, swing by Soma and check it out.

Nice place to stay for long time, they use marble cups to hold coffee, and the whole shop is like nice living rooms, very comfortable and relaxing, you could choose seat in chair or coach as you like, artistic restroom as well, many students and scholars go there to enjoy cup of coffee^^

Walking in, the place had a funny smell to it. I just couldn't tell what it was. The board to your left on a black chalk board with pink/green marking is the menu of drinks they offer. They have a good selection of caffeinated drinks. I tried the Oahu and the Swamp thing. This is a hipster like cafe with plenty of seating. Friendly staffs and good drinks. Oahu (5/5): Yum! This drink is served hot and has a smooth latte taste. Swamp thing (2/5): I opted for a cold drink because this drink description caught my attention. The peppermint syrup was A-OK and I felt that the soy didn't go too well with the peppermint syrup. I just thought this drink looked different and it tasted A-OK. *The restroom is a bit interesting. Mini steps, pipings, and writings on the mirror. See for it yourself, it's interesting. Overall, a cool cafe to study and drink coffee/tea.

This Bloomington-Kirkwood staple is a perfect college town coffee house - although I would like it anywhere. Great coffee, good selection of teas and smoothies and juices. Convenient for grabbing a quick beverage to-go if you're in a rush or also good for if you want to plant and study or read for hours. Love, love, love! I usually get coffee or a dirty chai.

  • Robin K.

They have fresh juice! Many places may have smoothies, but I find it exciting they have juice. The TV fish tank is super cute and a highlight in their décor. I was surprised they did not celebrate National Iced Tea Day, but will still return for their drinks.

  • Ruey P.

This place may be the only place that serves freshly squeezed juice. Very cool since we don't have a Whole Foods in town, or any other juice bars for that matter. In my opinion they have the best expressos in town, and possibly the best coffee in Btown altogether. The service is a bit spotty, sometimes the baristas can be unfriendly depending on whom you get. Price is very reasonable as well. I would recommend stopping by if you're visiting Bloomington. It definitely doesn't compare to the places I've been to at home or in Chicago, though.

I think a few years ago, this would have been a five-star review. With retro decor, progressive and subversive literature and clientele, and a cast of baristas that said, "The customer isn't always right," it was a spunky and funky alternative to the more Starbucks-y coffee shops Kirkwood has to offer. As long as you kept the tip jar full, you could spend an afternoon there easily without getting dirty looks, pounding away at a thesis in the silent back room, or plotting hijinks in the front room and patio. It certainly helps to have Laughing Planet right upstairs in case you need some food to soak up the caffeine, and the drink selection was still one of the best in town. Today, though, Soma is stuck between two very different identities, and I hope they figure it out soon. Every since the purchase of Copper Cup at their 3rd Street location, the Kirkwood Coffee House has been undergoing some renovations that seem a bit tasteless. While some of the funk is still there, much of it has been toned down since the new paintjob, with lovable couches, artwork, and bathroom decorations removed, creating an aesthetic clash much like a house that is halfway through a remodeling process -- the newfangled walls with the old mis-matched college furniture. That clash parallels the coffee itself, as Soma has been offering more standard fare like a "Pumpkin Spice Latte" to coffee drinkers who pick up and walk off rather than staying in and shooting the breeze. While I'm sure it's done wonders for revenue, it has really complicated the feel of the place. Unless there's space in the back room, which has more or less maintained its style from years ago, I tend to gravitate towards other coffee shops these days. Hopefully the dust settles on an identity soon.

I can't drive through Bloomington without stopping here. There's like a deep coffee gravity that pulls me in...

So many different drinks! It's hard to make a choice, but the mate latte is a safe bet. You can shy away from the vegan cookies, I haven't had the muffins though those look great. The chai was nice and spicy without being too sweet. Definitely the only coffee house I go to when I make the trip down to Bloomington.

Not a bad place to study or relax. For a non-coffee drinker, they have a good selection of tea, smoothies, chai, and other items. And I LOVE their Evening in Missoula iced tea. It's an interesting herbal tea with a strange but addictive mix of flavors that I can't begin to describe. Soma also has a nice outdoor area with picnic tables and is owned by the same owner as Laughing Planet so you can have a meal with your coffee. Free wifi and plenty of outlets for laptops. What I don't like is that this space is basically in a basement. For someone who likes sunlight while studying or has a little bit of a phobia about being stuck in a basement during a fire, this is not a great place to be. The restroom also freaks me out every single time. Just be prepared that there is an upside-down headless manikin sticking out of the floor. The light for the restroom is located in the hall, outside the single occupancy bathroom so just hope no one turns it off while you're sitting pants down next to the scary manikin! Soma is also most definitely not handicap accessible with stairs to get inside and to use the restroom. Some of the chairs and tables are falling apart or wobbly so watch where you sit!

I sort of have conflicted feelings about this Soma location. 3.5 stars and rounded down till further notice. First the positives: This is my second favorite place to get coffee in town after Feast (based on taste alone). The pumpkin spice latte offered during the fall (and made with real pumpkin) is super amazingly good. You will be disgruntled with any drink that settles for pumpkin flavored syrup after drinking this one. The speciality espresso drinks on the regular menu are also good. The whip cream on drinks is also especially tasty. I love the wooden outdoor tables and benches when the weather is good outside and it isn't so crowded over the summer months. It can be very relaxing to read outside with a book given you have the space to yourself or with other people who are being relatively quiet. But then there are also the negatives: This place consistently feels too cool for school. You will feel out of place if you are not part of the hipster elite. Nobody is overtly rude to you. But nobody is super friendly either. The inside of this Soma location can also feel claustrophobic since it's usually packed and sometimes during peak times it can be hard to find seating. I prefer to study on a patio outdoors or at least next to a large window with lots of light, so the inside of Soma feels too closed in to me. But worth checking out though to see for yourself.

still like coming here after more than 2 decades, but... the drip coffee just isn't what it used to be. the roaster they continue using somehow always manages to over-roast the beans (just take a look at the bags for sale with the oily/waxy beans). the one saving grace for them is that they use Heart Roasters from Portland for their espresso. that stuff is excellent. so, 2 stars for their coffee. a 3rd star for their smoothies and cosmic muffins.

Soma (Kirkwood) This well grounded B-Town staple offers a menu that ranges from regular drip coffee, unique smoothies that flush out toxins, beautifully hand-crafted caffe breves, to vegan treats. Seating is as bountiful as their menu is vast. Be sure to check out the back room--especially if you're looking for a place to study and in of a need an outlet! One complaint: the recently hired newbs need to up their game. Much longer wait times and a lack of friendly communication. Slothy service is easily forgiven if one feels welcomed. Minus 1 for lack of good service. Recommend hot beverage: Oahu

Wonderful college coffee house with tons of options and friendly staff. Have had regular brewed coffee as well as Vietnamese style. Both types were fresh and flavorful. Wonderful place to people watch and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather from the outside tables. Inside was a little cramped, but cozy-cool. Highly recommended!

As a former IU student, I definitely suggest Soma to any coffee enthusiasts also looking to support a local business. Still surprised more people don't go here seeing as it's pretty close to Starbucks and it offers a very cool experience. I first went to Soma back in 2008 and tried their Dark Chocolate Zombie. I became addicted to this drink for some time, but eventually branched out to their many other specialty options. Also a fan of the Top of the Morning. Regular drop coffee has always been brewed very well and the tea selection is on par with their coffee. Their smoothies and fruit drinks taste great and the PB&J is awesome. In addition to their drinks they have great food selection ranging from homemade scones, biscotti and other baked goods. There are also plenty of vegan options, which taste just as good as the regular baked goods. The ambiance and environment is pretty cool with a definite trendy vibe. Not in anyway bad, but it's very much a relaxing casual place to either grab coffee with a friend or study in the back. Lots of outlets and seating both indoor and outdoor. Another perk is they are just downstairs from Laughing Planet and I believe you can take food from upstairs or vice versa. Having been out of town for some time I decided a while ago I would definitely visit Soma when here for the weekend and was not disappointed.

As another reviewer said, I liked the old decor. The christmas lights, the aquarium TV. It was way more funky and felt more "off the beaten path". Now the grey walls and total lack of decor makes this place feel less welcoming and more utilitarian. Which seems weird because I think the owner of the VD owns Soma and LP. I'm not sure what his plans are, but bring back the FUNK! You totally have to visit the bathroom. Just saying.

Cute little funky hole-in-the-wall place. With holes in the wall. Good coffee/drinks. Good, yummy treats. Some vegan options if you're in to that sort of thing. FREE Wi-Fi. One-of-a-kind local coffee shop.

Soma Coffee House is a great little place...they know how to make a red eye, courteous and quickly !

The vegan peanut butter chocolate chip bar. Seriously amazing. Soma's best kept secret. You don't even have to be vegan to appreciate it. For some reason they don't have it at the other location, but I'm just glad we as humans are capable of tolerating it's awesomeness. I'm eating one right now. Why am I even telling you this? I want more for myself.

In town to visit a friend and was looking for a coffee shop that served tea. Found it in Soma thanks to Yelp suggestions. Enjoyed the vibe, the music and the environs as a coffee shop nerd who trafficks in coffee shops all over the place. Pretty decent tea menu and vegan snack situation if you're into that (I prefer gluten free. no dice) But overall, it got the job done in terms of my immediate needs. If I were a local, I'd be back.

I like supporting local coffee shops. I want to say Soma is my go-to spot in Btown, but the coffee doesn't have me running back. I do like their fresh smoothies a lot. Customer service is lacking.

  • Vanessa V.

Spent a morning here... free wi-fi and lots of outlets were a definite plus. But crummy old sofas or wood benches as the only seating options... disappointing. And basement location with few windows didn't make for a very uplifting experience. It seemed like there were a lot of regulars who all knew each other, and being the outsider was kind of awkward. That being said, if I went to school here I wouldn't avoid it.

What a disappointing coffee shop. For a hip place like Bloomington, a great coffee shop should be a no-brainer. However, Soma Coffee House has managed to mess it up in every way possible. When you walk into a coffee house you should smell a nice aroma of coffee and espresso brewing, however Soma stinks like a thrift store. The place was very dirty and disgusting, which might explain the inexcusable smell. The staff was absoutley horrendous! I got no welcome when I entered the door and they acted like they didn't want me there when I ordered. When I finally did order, I got a carmel Frapparooni, which is basically their version of a frappacino. My drink was just bad. I tasted no carmel whatsoever, and the whip cream was not sweet at all. In fact the entire drink was bland. A bad drink is an unforgivable sin for a coffee shop. My experience here was terrible, so do not waste your money here. I don't know how you can manage to mess up a coffee shop in downtown Bloomington, but Soma Coffee House has managed to do so. What a disgrace!

Both locations need better espresso beans. Although the switch to a different roaster last year was an improvement, the acidity and bitterness of the roast is still difficult to ignore. In fact, it often gives me stomach pain. So why do I buy it? Because your shop is the closest thing we have in B-town to a real coffeeshop. With that in mind, please do us the favor of either getting better espresso machines or/and finding a new roaster (if you do, please stay away from the Bloomington roasters: there are no top-notch roasters in B-town). If you do some research, companies like Counter Culture, Intelligenstia, Buzz: Killer Espresso, Zoka, Kuma, RItual, Blue Bottle, Barrington will show you how to treat a bean. There are even roasters in Louisville (98 miles away) who could provide you with fine product (Heine Bros., Sunergos). So why settle for a mediocre product? Downtown location: your furniture, although quirky and thrifty, sucks. Some of it itches and some of it stinks. Some of it does both. And the smell from the burrito sewer upstairs is unpleasant. 3rd and Jordan: horrible Feng Shui. This place ends up way too crowded and is not a comfortable place to sit for an extended period of time. Although the staff is generally nicer than the Downtown location, it still is frustratingly crowded. NOTE: I used to order Americanos when I visited Soma, but I do not anymore. Why? Because most of your baristas water them down too much. I started ordering them with extra room to ensure that they aren't diluted. But often times the baristas aren't paying attention and the fill it up with hot water within a 1/2 inch of the lid. So when they would say, "is this enough room?", I would answer with a "NO". So what was their solution? To pour some off of the top. That means they were pouring out espresso as well as water - and I was paying for espresso that they were pouring down the drain. When I buy an Americano, I expect it to be stronger in flavor than coffee, but smoother than straight espresso. If I wanted the weaker flavor, I would just order coffee.

Not going to go into lengthy description of Soma's menu or decor; the previous reviews have those details covered aplenty. Soma pulls great espresso and their lattes are almost the best in Bloomington (in my opinion, Feast now holds that distinction - probably because several ex-Soma workers are now manning the espresso machines there). It's a fabled place to study, read or socialize for grad students and townspeople. In my mind there's truly nothing like a coffee buzz, a laptop or a good book, and the hum of Soma traffic in the background. I feel like I should say a word about the service, in response to some of the sensationalist, grandiloquent barista-bashing in previous reviews. I have been going there for at least 5 years. I am in Soma at least 200 days out of any given year. Out of a thousand experiences, and I can count on one finger the number of times that anyone has been the slightest bit rude or short with me. It has been my experience that fussy and annoying customers get fussy service in return.

When I think "coffee shop," Soma is the very type of place that comes to mind: better than average food with funky baked offerings, a mix of standard and creative coffee drinks, and an environment that mixes a variety of sub- and countercultural aesthetics with a relaxed but slightly hip atmosphere. Soma might seem a normal, run of the mill type place for a liberal university town like Bloomington. For those of us who have lived in cities with similar places we took for granted, though, and now live in rural towns where coffee shops all want to be hunting lodges or Victorian parlor rooms with sickly adult contemporary music or country radio, places that hold no thoughtful (even annoying) theory-floating conversations or obscure band posters...little shops like Soma are paradise. We visited more than once on our brief trip to Bloomington, and we both agreed that it made us want to move there. I got swept up in the spirit of the place and ordered a "Swamp Thing" drink (it's got mint, espresso, and all kinds of good-natured dirty delicious sludge). I normally stick with coffee or Americanos, but I was inspired to get adventurous, and I'm glad I did. My drink was delicious, not too sweet, and a great way to spend an evening. Would be a 5 star, but I dropped one star because this place would be very difficult to access for many people with disabilities.

I get that it's their thing but at the end of the day fair trade coffee just isn't as good of quality as a lot of other coffee. If you're into the vegan thing or just are pretty hipster this might be your kind of place but for me there seemed to be a lot of things missing. I also just kind of feel that the place is trying to hard or something. My 3 stars is meant to say that the place is OK and offers some interesting things, but really isn't going to get me to go out of the way for the experience...I'd honestly just go to Starbucks if you just want coffee. If you're looking for some other items they have then I guess I get it.

An average coffee shop with a warm atmosphere and average coffee place foodstuffs. The barista was kinda cute but not enough to overcome his nonchalance. More than anything I like its name (because it reminds me of home) and its back door's proximity to that funky record store, TD's CD's & LP's. I'll probably go back.

Soma is located inside of the magical maze-building that also includes Laughing Planet, Cactus Flower, and TD's. You'll find perhaps the densest concentration of dreadlocks in all of Bloomington here, so if you still wear ties on your days off you probably won't enjoy it very much. Another reason not to like Soma is if you're an uppity coffee snob. I tend to view coffee more as a vessel for caffeine than an enjoyable beverage, so I can't quite speak to the quality of the beans on the level of some other dudes. But I can say I've had better coffee elsewhere. The specialty drinks are pretty okay, especially if you're doing some studying (ha ha ha you're just on facebook). Do you like crazy crap on the walls and wobbly little tables that could use a couple of matchbooks under the legs? Surly baristas, maybe? Let's drop the snotty tone and be real here for a minute. I've been making occasional visits to Soma over the last five years and it's been a decent standard. I like to break up mammoth study sessions into different locations, and Soma is usually a nice pit stop in between, say, the Monroe County public library and the Wells library. It can be annoying to show up and not find any comfortable seating, and the drinks are more or less "functional," usually trending slightly better than whatever you would get at a Starbucks or Tim Horton's or whatever. I like Soma, but I'm not crazy about it. The ambiance can get a little obnoxious at times, but if you're in the mood for a self-consciously hip anti-corporate coffee shop, it's a happy, cozy little experience. And despite what some other reviewers mention, I've never noticed a particularly bad smell here. It smells a-ok! Come on in and have a sniff!

Typical local coffee house. In the basement of an old building off Kirkwood (if you're not from Bloomington, that's a happening place) - lots of regulars. Coffee was blisteringly hot, which is all I can ask! This isn't a Starbucks experience - this is a dive-bar version of a coffee shop. There are tables/chairs but nothing trendy or fancy. Didn't eat, so can't comment on the food.

First thought when I walked in is that it's a very funky place. I ordered an iced mocha coffee- it was mediocre. It was insanely sweet to the point where I couldn't drink the whole thing, which is weird for me when it comes to coffee. The prices are outrageous for the quality- I would rather go to Dunkin Donuts and get better coffee for less than half the price.

The employees at Soma sure know how to steam milk. It's great to have small chats with the baristas, the environment is very cozy. They've also got vegan friendly options, including baked goods If you have a cold, stop in and get a Doctor D's Tonic (which you can sub agave for the honey) - it will show your symptoms who's boss :D

Oh Soma, how I was addicted to you. I used to get an iced mocha nearly every day there. They make the best mochas there in Bloomington in my opinion, and better than almost anywhere else. Smoothies are delicious, and not all the vegan items suck. I'm a fan of the peanut butter bars. Staff was always hit-or-miss. The worst was (is? if she's still there) Abby, one of the managers. What an unpleasant stick-up-the-twat hipster she was. I applied to be the overnight baker there once. Upon handing her my application I expressed some self-doubt that I had as far as meeting the requirements for the position, freely pointing out that I didn't have formal baking experience and why would they thus hire me (just for the record I bake quite well regardless and could have brought killer banana bread to the joint). "I'm doing this on a whim," I told her. So really it was supposed to be one of those self-deprecating remarks made in jest, and certainly not an assertion that I wouldn't give my all if hired, but this seemed to offend her greatly and she said to me with bitchy sarcasm, "Well, I'll take your application REAL seriously, then!" And every time after that when I came in she'd give me the iciest attitude. Abby, if you're reading this, I hate you. HATE. On the other hand, consider another manager, her name is Carrie I believe. A dyke with a cool tiger eye. I'm gay so I can say dyke, is that ok? Anyway she is the most wonderful, friendly barista that I've EVER met and I wish she could be cloned to revolutionize the service industry. Even though the atmosphere/decor is rather ridiculous I still kind of like it in an odd way. There are a lot of hipster coffeehouses which are populated with grungy folk but look just like ordinary places otherwise. At least Soma has some character in that regard. And as far as what I hate about it, I love to hate.

Great coffee ... the place generally is a bit tired and not terribly comfortable for extended sitting or work.

  • Nadeem P.

This place had alot of hype, and I must say I was a bit disappointed during my first visit here. I had one of the specialty coffees, which was extremely milky and seemed to not have much flavor or coffee. My folks had the french press, and really didn't have anything good to say about it. The water in it was not hot enough and the coffee wasn't too great. To be honest I'd rather go to Starbucks... FYI - I'm not a coffee snob, and go out for coffee maybe once every month, so my opinion is definitely biased versus those who are coffee regulars, so take my review with a grain of salt.

I could easily give this GREAT coffee house a 5 star rating, but that would be like walking on water. I don't even walk on water. No seriously, first time in this awesome, funky coffee house. This is what belongs near a great university, just as it is near IU here in Bloomington. It is what would work even in funky Leucadia, California, where I live. The Blackbeard's drip coffee is phenomenal, as are the baked goods. I had this drip coffee, along with a toasted poppy seed bagel with butter. Perfect, as I am sure their gluten-free baked goods are. If you are ever in Bloomington and you are avoiding those "chain-coffee" houses out there, do yourself a favor and stop here.

The coffee is good. You will pay more here for a cup than most anywhere else in town. However, the coffee is good and there are usually about 3 or 4 different drip varieties to choose from. The shop is basically in a basement and is decorated with ironic garage sale finds and art student projects. The decoration livens the place up and makes you forget you are in a basement... sort of. Given that the shop is in a basement and is below a fairly thriving business, it definitely does not feel clean in there. Not the sort of dirty where you feel the need to call the health department, just a grungy overall ick. This place is not kid friendly and seems fairly hostile to anyone over the age of 25. There is wi-fi. Refills of drip coffee are not free. There is a back room that can easily be missed (ie the room you walk into is not the only space).

Aggressively, in-your-face quirky...but at least it's got character? I think it's doing its job; there kind of needs to be a place like this in a small Midwest college town. Other reviewers were harping on its dirtiness. I get the feeling they don't bust out the disinfectant spray too much around here, but I also didn't feel like I was going to get pink eye, either [My litmus test for filth. If I get the PE vibe, I'm gone.] I didn't think much of their baked goods -- quite bland. Trivia: Soma is, in fact, not a reference to San Francisco's Soma (South of Market) neighborhood. I can't imagine why not.

I was in Bloomington and just needed to find wifi (IU required permission!), and a local had said the day earlier that they had good coffee. So we went, sat on some silly 70s orange chairs, and hopped on the wifi. When I had a mental block, I stared at the old TV-turned-fish tank. So, yes, it does reek of college-town overly hipness (the restroom needs to be seen to believe) and the walls are painted in the way that my mom wouldn't let me do my room in 7th grade (so I ended up just doing my nails that way-- each one a different color). But that's how non-corporate coffee houses should be: showing with such venom that they're not following the corporate rules that they basically follow a whole new set of them. But whatever. It's what to expect. As long as people aren't smoking next to me and the stench of patchouli isn't making me want to toss my breakfast, I'm cool. I found the staff quick, friendly (not at all surly!) and my latte was stiff but delicious. This is the kind of place every good college town needs. Even crappy college towns (I'm looking at you, Tallahassee). I didn't try any of the baked goods, but overheard a customer asking what they use in the vegan muffins to make them work, and I heard something about very ripe bananas and egg substitute. I have a new favorite coffee house, but sadly, it's nowhere near my home.

I have to agree with the other readers' comments about Soma having an unfriendly staff. It's difficult for me to characterize their behavior, but the best I can do is classify them as faux-liberal. Quite a bit of hubris and closed-mindedness present in staff attitudes--- Way, way too much hubris given the average quality of their drinks. I'd have a better overall experience if I bought a latte at Starbucks and then had the barista punch me in the face.

I'm always a fan of local, independent establishments and this place plays to its strengths with quirky original drink concocations (I had a half chai, half drip coffee last time). I can't speak for the food as I've only ever had beverages here, but the beverages are always fast and tasty. The decor is a little "loud" but it fits with the atmosphere so I won't take points off for that.

Soma has oddly unfriendly staff in the face of better competition. I know some people just love this place but I suspect they may have masochistic tendencies or at least lowered expectations. Oddly disgruntled folk, for no obvious reason for being disgruntled, seem to migrate to Soma. Soma is proud of it's "No Corporate Aftertaste" mantra but I suspect that lack of health care benefits for its surly staff might actually help create a "Non Corporate Aftertaste" for its patrons. Small independent coffee places don't need to have such a negative vibe - Soma turns "alternative" into its own fascist conformity in some topsy-turvy way. It could really lighten up. As the character Edina Monsoon of "Absolutely Fabulous" fame says: "Grind some beans for God's sake . . . . Would you not pull that face while you grind? I don't really want to drink a cup full of your anger!"

Good, chilling grounds and tasty drinks. I sorta live here to be honest - but that's just because it's so awesome. Call it hipster if you want, I loves you Soma!

Absolutely obessed with this place. I come here for the Chai and the freshly baked peach scones. You have to grab them in the morning, or by noon they are all gone. Great vegan and vegetarian options and I'm so glad they have everything soy, since I'm lactose-intolerant. The vibe is so relaxed and comfortable and very warm for being underground. A stairwell leads up to The Laughing Planet Cafe and in the back room you can study quietly while using the free Wi-Fi. I love that they open early and stay open late (til 11 p.m.) so if you want, you can spend the whole day in the eclectic, inviting environment. I'm not sure why some people here are put off by the decor or the underground location, but I find it really soothing and calming. Staff is always friendly, save for one or two grumpy baristas I've encountered (possibly on an off day) and I love going here for a quick coffee made with love, instead of feeding Starbucks $5 for a crappy, half-assed latte twice a week.

Great fresh juices and coffee, awesome ambiance, and pretty friendly staff. Best cafe in town by a long shot.

What is not to like about Soma. First, grab some drip coffee - it's super acidic and amazing. Next, grab a cosmic muffin - they'll be your new reason for living. Lastly, those two powers combined will bring you peace, happiness and coffee poopy. the bathroom is awesome. When sitting on the toilet, I feel like it could be a scene out of "Being John Malkovich" Is the broken atari still there? Try to fix it and play frogger!

Cute decor, good music, nice employees.. Some background on this place for me. I have a number of friends who went to IU and really hyped for this place. It seems to be a great cafe and probably the best coffee shop in town, but compared to the variety of places in Chicago (and a couple in Madison and Milwaukee), I have to admit I was a little *disappointed*.. But I guess thats not Soma's fault- just the fault of my built up expectations. I've gotta show love for local places pushing organics, etc, but its so small! They do the best they can with the boxy space that they've got, but its too bad it doesn't have more of it. On nice days, there's a nice outdoor seating space, which is a big plus. Also, they are laptop friendly with their free WIFI. Plus, I'm liking this sinking orange chair that I'm currently sitting in.

Before you walk into this sweltering grimy hell hole, ask yourself, is a mediocre cup of badly prepared coffee worth contracting cholera? I wish deciding where to begin with this review was as easy a decision as deciding whether or not to return to this disgusting excuse of a coffee house. 1) The employees. I have never been greeted with such attitude when ordering a cup of coffee. If this attitude led at least to a decent cup of espresso, I would be much more willing to tolerate it. Their general inability to process a simple request is mind boggling. The employees that run this establishment embody a set of beliefs that are reminiscent of a cult. Is there a law against showering and cleanliness in this portal to a third world country? 2) Cleanliness. a. The ice tea tasted like it had been sitting in a container that still had dishwashing detergent on it (whether or not there's a dishwasher here remains a mystery to me). b. The soy milk must have been sitting out for days. Pouring it into a clear glass filled with iced coffee resulted in my coffee grind infused brown cocktail turning into a beverage that loosely resembled diarrhea c. Flies. Everywhere. Moving on. d. The dishes, walls, counter tops, tables, floors. Filthy. Grimy. Cleaned using an old moldy sponge, covered in hipster bacon grease and then waxed using hipster dinosaur shit. Then they take their tattooed bodies and ring the lice and grease from their hair out for the extra shine. 3) The pricing. Considering walking into this joint is comparable to entering Nigeria, why am I dishing out 4 bucks for diarrhea water? If I were in Nigeria, I'd at least feel better knowing that my money is going toward supporting a hungry family or sick relative. Where is all this money going to?!? WHO IS THE OWNER?? WHAT IS HE THINKING? While many hipsters and greasy low lifes may find it reasonable to pay almost four bucks for a cup of soapy iced tea, I would rather take my business over to Starbucks where at least I know I'll be treated respectfully and the coffee I buy will consistently taste decent. Fun fact. Every time a fly lands, it takes a dump. Think of that every time you go in here. Are you a fly? Try Soma.

I would rather stab myself in the eye with a stick than come back here. I dropped in for hot chocolate which I eventually got along with a healthy dose of attitude and rudeness. For a customer service based place there doesn't seem to be much service.

This is one of my favorite spots in Bloomington. I like to go for a quiet glass of peppermint tea, and one of their amazing pumpkin & chocolate-chip cookies. If nothing else, you need at least to check out their restroom!

Soma was by far my absolute favorite coffee shop in Bloomington. When I talk about my college years, Soma inevitably falls into the conversation. Their baristas consistently took care of my every need. Studying for a test? Peppermint Patty with an extra shot of espresso. Got a cold? They'll whip up some magical tea with ginger root in it that instantly clears the sinuses. Bad day? Whatever you want plus some good advice to send you on your way to solve your problems. Seriously, if I ever move back to Bloomington, Soma will continue to stay at the top of my list for places to be. LOVE this place. Five stars, plus a little extra love for making my stay in B'town way more memorable.

When I lived in Bloomington, I used to come to this place to...grab a cup of coffee and read. Duh...what else do you do in a coffee shop. Anyways, I always liked the atmosphere in this place, even if it did get a bit crowded at times and you would do the awkward look for a seat dance with the short ceiling and all. The wall art, furniture, and music were all very comforting. And the free wi-fi was very much appreciated.

Alright, I guess I had some high expectations for this place, based on the reviews. And I've had coffee there a few times since moving here. The coffee itself isn't too bad (I've only had the drip) but the smell in here is something fierce. I guess since its right beneath Laughing Planet, It smells like cumin very often, which....to me smells like BO. Aside from that I Have an issue with the low ceilings. also pretty hipster, if you're into that kind of thing. I'd rather get my coffee elsewhere.

  • Matthew W.

Espresso is amazing. Their barristas know how to pull a great shot. Make sure you go to happy hour, between 3-4 and get half price espresso drinks. I could take or leave the ambience. It's a little too college-towny for me, but the coffee, oh the coffee.

Very nice place.....laid back and almost always bubbling with action. Not the place if you are looking for high class dining. Very down to earth and pleasant people who serve the coffee. Good place to hang out and chill as a group.

Unique environment with music that sometimes catches me offguard in a way that makes me want to ask the barista for a mix tape. The coffee is probably the best in Bloomington, but not on par with other coffee shops I think it tries to measure up to. (ie: Stumptown, Old Crown) One of my favorite parts about SOMA is the eclectic group of people that show up there - great for people watching and accidental eavesdropping. The staff is very knowledgeable and you're bound to see some of the same people working each time you visit, which is encouraging. My only complaint is some of the seating can be uncomfortable as the environment needs a good cleaning and some of the furniture needs to be replaced/fixed. The back room also has some strange temperature issues in extreme heat or cold. All in all, the shop's quirks give it more character. Overall, I definitely recommend visiting this coffee shop whether you're going by yourself or with a group of friends if you're downtown. Finally, soma refers to many things, but my favorite is a drunk in Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", which keeps everyone in the society at the same emotional level. I love this little secret: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/So…

Oh, how I miss this place. Surly staff, but that's part of the charm, right? They make their soy lattes with plain soy milk as opposed to vanilla, and that's enough to keep them permanently in the depths of my heart. From the decor to the Cosmic Muffins, this was my second home, and I miss it so.

  • Teej T.

This is a coffeeshop well worth loving. Comfortable seating, free wifi, generous espressos, a TV MADE INTO AN AQUARIUM, and best of all--a wall of printed out craigslist missed connections involving Soma. What is there not to love? Nothing, I say. Nothing.

Pretty low key and has excellent selection of coffee/specialty drinks. Everyone here is kindda geeky or yuppy like...pretty chill. If you bring a mac, I think you get a 10% discount and if you wear patagonia jackets...you get a free coffee...and if you bring a sigg bottle with you while wearing patagonia and holding a macbook...you get a XXXXXXX

  • Chad B.

Not bad, I'm just not a fan of the atmosphere. I like a chill coffee house. This place is just a little too hipster/pretentious for me. The coffee isn't bad. I would probably get it to go. If I am staying somewhere to hang out, I would prefer a much more open and welcoming place like Pourhouse.

If I could only find the equivalent in Chicago, I would be much happier. Soma was one of my absolute favorite places to frequent while at IU. Benefits abound: excellent artisan coffees, fantastic treats, cute tchotchkies (i have a postcard collection thanks to them), and they serve your coffee in a pint glass. I can't begin to count the number of hours I spent here studying, checking out cute guys, socializing, and figuring out life. Love you, miss you, mean it.

Let me first say THANK YOU to Soma, you are the main reason that I graduated this year. I would also like to thank Blackbeards Blend for allowing me to remain alert durring my long study sessions. It is a hippster's paradise, and even though I dont belong to that demographic at all, I always felt more comfortable at Soma, than I ever have at St@rb&ks...oh, and the coffe is better too. This is the best coffe house in town, and I also enjoy that if I get hungry I can always go upstairs and grab a bite. I highly recoment Soma's Peanut Butter bars, as well as the chocolate chip bars...I also really enjoy that they allow thier staff to provide the music from their ipods, if you dont like it you can always go into to back room where there is no music. Soma, the secret to my success.

  • Aubrey R.

Soma has delicious coffee, a great college coffee shop atmosphere, and (with the occasional exception) a very friendly and helpful group of barristas. Like the barristas of any good coffee shop the majority of them will take the time to match your face to your favorite drink or drinks, and remember your drink pet peeves. They even carry almond milk now!

  • Laurel W.

The BEST coffee in Bloomington!! If I really need a jolt, I go for the Blackbeard's Blend (one of the house coffees). Their other blends are equally fabulous, if you want a gentler pick-me-up. Don't forget to ask for whipped cream. Their homemade whip is heady and decadent, with vanilla and cinnamon in it. It's definitely worth the $0.40 extra! My only complaint is that I'm sometimes not fond of the music. It can be very...energetic...and sometimes not conducive to talking or studying (in my opinion).

    (5)
  • Alysse G.

Cute and eclectic on the inside. I loved the music they played too. They have great smoothies and coffee and a bunch of other stuff. They also have great outdoor seating. Oh! And the bathroom is nuts! Definitely check it out.

  • Angelica G.

I love how close Soma is to IU. Even though i'm not a big fan of Soma's aspiration of being an alternative funky hole-in-the-wall coffee shop, the drinks are well-worth it. The outdoor seating area is a great place to be on a nice day and the bathroom has a chalkboard, it's hard not to be entertained. And like some of the other reviewers have mentioned, the employees can sometimes have a less-than friendly attitude.

  • Merrill N.

If you like walls covered in maps or TVs made into aquariums, you might enjoy Soma. I know I do. I often just get a hot chocolate with whipped cream. Their whipped cream is my favorite! Thick, not too sweet, yum. They have all kinds of more interesting drinks - everything I've had there has been good! The comfortable atmosphere in Soma is just the best, and I've been there many times and never had a problem with the service. Please support Soma!

    (4)
  • Matt F.

Great atmosphere, great people, but the coffee just isn't that great. Maybe it's just me, but it always tastes a little burnt.

I've been Soma on about 4/5 occasions. The place is a little bit alternative for my normal taste, but the coffee is very good, and the smoothies are wonderful! I bought the Buckwheat Blueberry muffins twice, one time it was awful, crumbly, and dry. The 2nd time it was much more fresh and moist. The bathroom is a sight to see. This little place has charm, that's for sure.

  • Chris I.

Just in side the front door, there is an old TV. Inside the TV is a fish tank. Inside the fish tank is King Kong. As other's have said, make sure you give the bathroom a peek, you won't be disappointed. Soma is my favorite coffee shop in Bloomington. It's right on Kirkwood, the whipped cream is amazing, and their espresso beverages are consistently tasty. Combined with the free WiFi, the grungy-artsy atmosphere, and the comfy spots in the back near the board games, this place rules. Reminds me of rock-and-roll dive bar if they sold coffee instead of booze.

  • Tony D.

Not Starbuck's. About as local as it gets. Really cool atmosphere, and great coffee. Probably the best baristas in town. Its one of the reasons I chose to go to IU over the other schools I was accepted to. I think I went here everyday while I attended IU. Oh yeah, free wi-fi. One of the places that makes Bloomington well, Bloomington.

  • Elihu C.

Very good indeed! Fair Trade organic coffees, expresso drinks and juice drinks. Homemade vegan muffins and cookies and scones. They used to carry the City Bakery's Croissants, but you will just have to go to their own shop on 3rd street for the croissants now. Great backroom when you don't need a window to see out, they have public games, books, and even a 1970's LiteBrite I donated, but someone will have to find a new Lite Bulb for that now since it has burnt out.

  • Claire G.

Soma coffee is the best in Bloomington, that's for sure. My fiance and I were (unfortunately for our budgets) addicted to the Americanos and also brewed Soma's beans at home quite frequently. Most baristas were friendly and pleasant, especially as we became familiar faces. However, once I slipped and ordered a "grande" instead of a medium and did I ever commit a cardinal sin. The barista got all haughty and bent out of shape and I was really annoyed. I mean, come on, there are only a few coffee choices in Bloomington and while I frequented Soma most often, sometimes a Starbucks at the union was my best option. So don't make me feel bad for not using the proper lingo. I'll take my americanos without the bitter attitude, please.

  • marcin z.

Soma is great whether you just want to drop by and have a coffee, or if you want to stay for hours working or chatting with friends. The coffee is much better than your average fare at Starbucks. One can get some small pastries, and, one floor up, there is a restaurant called Laughing Planet where one can get food and bring it down. One gripe I have with Soma are some "predatory" pricing practices. In particular, I mean how much they charge for organic milk. On a single latte, Soma charges me 40c extra for organic milk. Come on!

    (4)
  • Matt H.

Soma is a great place. My only problem with it is the funky smell in the back room. Every once in a while they should buy/dumpster dive/steal some different furniture.

    (4)
  • Meghan L.

a great place for great coffee that goes straight to your head (and straight out your ass if you're me, but that's another story.) the smoothies are also delicious, especially the pb&j. get one of those and a ginger cookie and hunker down in a dark corner and you're good to go for 2/3 of the day. if you're me. oh undergrad, how i (sometimes) pine for thee.

    (5)
  • MsAnthro P.

I'm one of those types who just wants coffee, no specialty drinks necessary. (Although, I will make an exception for their awesome fruit smoothies from time to time.) Anyhow, Soma pretty much has the best-tasting coffee around. As others have said before me, the main room can get stuffy, crowded and loud and there's a chance that the music playing overhead and/or the chatter of local hippie/hipster college kids might be annoying. But the back room, although connected to TD's CDs & LPs, is usually pretty quiet and a good place to study/work. The WiFi signal is strong and there are usually a lot of available outlets both in the front and back rooms if you need to plug your laptop in. There is ample outdoor seating, which makes it a perfect spot for chilling out, sipping coffee, reading and people-watching on a nice day. And the baristas are all super friendly. In general, it's a really great little shop.

  • Samantha L.

This was by far my favorite coffee shop in Bloomington. Their Oahu drinks were AMAZING, and the atmosphere was enjoyable. I liked to go there to study on my laptop for a few hours, since the IU library was almost like a social outing, filled with people you know. This place was much more quiet and laid back.

    (5)
  • Natalie D.

It's a great place to sit and chat, but the last few times I've been there, it's been incredibly dirty inside and I've lost my appetite before I could even order anything to eat.

  • Catherine H.

I haven't ever really had a bad experience with the baristas at Soma, but I really don't expect much out of them in the first place. The coffee is wonderful, so that's all that matters to me. If they want to think more of themselves than they ought, it's fine. As long as the coffee stays delicious who cares what setting it's served in.

  • lauren p.

We went because of the yelp reviews, but perhaps they built our expectations up too much. Soma is a nice coffee shop, with a variety of sitting options, but feels like it is really trying to be a hip coffee shop rather than just being one. You know what I mean? It's cool. I'm sure if I go back to Bloomington I'll make sure to stop there, but it didn't blow me away the way that I expected it to.

The first and last place I almost always go to when visiting friends in good ol' bton! Love Soma. Although I live in Brooklyn, there's no place that compares to Soma. It's the only coffee place I've EVER gone to that understands what I mean when I say "Foamy Au Lait with VERY little milk". I think the last time I was in town I spent more time here than anywhere else. Not really, but close enough.

Like the coffee, like the decorations, HATE the giant cloud of hipster that infests this place. When I got here three years ago it was tolerable as the hipsters were at least not rude but as time has gone on they have been beyond shitty to customers and each other. I actually had a Barista complain about our toddler dancing in the floor space next to the couch I was in. I mean literally not even a foot from him and he hadn't left my side but was standing. Another time I actually got pushed out of the way and given a dirty look by a girl in dreads because I was in her space. I Like their coffee but I just can't give them a higher score because of how shitty the staff and customers are. Basic rule if your not a hateful hipster go in get the coffee and run in the other direction. Or better yet realize that there are at least 5 other places to get great coffee within a block and a half of that location and skip the rude staff, and shitty hipster population. NEVER EVER BRING a child in there because you have just as much chance that they will get stepped on or kicked as being smiled at.

Soma is the super-cute, reasonably-priced, ultra-cool archetype of the college town coffee house. The clientle is a nice hodge podge of Bloomington locals and college students, collectively gathered to get a tasty caffeine fix. The ambiance is cozy and - dare I say? - quirky, with one of the most charismatic bathrooms I've ever seen. The staff is friendly and efficient. When my double soy latte was accidentally snagged by a single soy latte drinker, the barista graciously gave me a bonus latte. Play Scrabble, eat a vegan peanut butter chocolate chip bar, and people watch - I reckon that's the true Soma experience.

Best coffee in town for sure. Best place in his student heavy town to read in a corner. Back room leads directly to TD's CDs and upstairs the Laughing Planet, so you can't really mind the lack of food at SOMA. Plus, their cookies are fantastic, even if they are vegan.

  • Christina S.

I wanted a vegan brownie, but I had a smoothie instead. I think either would have been an excellent choice. This is one of those coffee shops where you can hang out for hours. Lots of students. Not too quiet, not too bustling. Chalkboard wall and female mannequin in the bathroom.

A great place to study/hang with friends. Drinks can be better if the makers are trained better. Had trouble after having their bubble tea twice before. Not so good restrooms (not sure how it is now)

They have fresh juice! Many places may have smoothies, but I find it exciting they have juice. The TV fish tank is super cute and a highlight in their décor. I was surprised they did not celebrate National Iced Tea Day, but will still return for their drinks.

  • Nicole B.

Come on!

Soma is a great place. My only problem with it is the funky smell in the back room. Every once in a while they should buy/dumpster dive/steal some different furniture.

a great place for great coffee that goes straight to your head (and straight out your ass if you're me, but that's another story.) the smoothies are also delicious, especially the pb&j. get one of those and a ginger cookie and hunker down in a dark corner and you're good to go for 2/3 of the day. if you're me. oh undergrad, how i (sometimes) pine for thee.

I wanted a vegan brownie, but I had a smoothie instead. I think either would have been an excellent choice. This is one of those coffee shops where you can hang out for hours. Lots of students. Not too quiet, not too bustling. Chalkboard wall and female mannequin in the bathroom.

Wonderful college coffee house with tons of options and friendly staff. Have had regular brewed coffee as well as Vietnamese style. Both types were fresh and flavorful.

  • Jeremy P.

  • Lauren Y.

  • Annee T.

    (4)
  • Vox V.

Espresso is amazing. Their barristas know how to pull a great shot. Make sure you go to happy hour, between 3-4 and get half price espresso drinks. I could take or leave the ambience. It's a little too college-towny for me, but the coffee, oh the coffee.
