Much love to the Yelp community, but here's a time when you've got it dead wrong. I LOVE Happy Fish, and I have always had great service and delicious food. Some of the reviews posted sound fishy if you ask me (pun intended) and appear totally fabricated. I beg my husband to take me to Happy Fish all the time. I dream about the crab rangoon and cali sunset roll :) (Hold on a second while I wipe the drool off my chin...okay that's better.) I still agree that the rolls sometime do not hold together very well. However, the staff is very friendly & responsive, the rolls imaginative and always artfully presented, and my visits have always yielded very fresh and tasty sushi. Plus, the happy hour is always a very good deal! If you're interested in the new menu, you can check out their Facebook fanpage, or look at the photos I have added to Yelp. And just an fyi, it's always smart to check Happy Fish's Facebook fanpage before a visit, as they post the specials of the day, any changes in business hours, etc. Again, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Happy Fish! Definitely give them a try and don't let these wacked out reviews dissuade you.

Happy Fish is the cheapest restaurant sushi of acceptable quality in Peoria (Sushi Popo and their consistently poor health inspection scores don't qualify). It's OK if you're a college student and/or willing to accept its (many) limitations. That said, I'd rather spend 20% more and get better sushi elsewhere. The main problem I have, really, is that the service is extremely lackadaisical. Even when I've come on a weekday during Bradley's summer vacation, I've had to wait half an hour before being able to have someone take my order, let alone for food to start coming out. The other common complaints, like the variety of rolls containing cream cheese being inauthentic, are valid, but for me it's a matter of expectations. This is not a place you visit if you want the most authentic sushi experience. The last straw for me is that they haven't had unagi any of the three times I've gone. It's too bad, because I do really enjoy their scallops.

Great selection of sushie rolls! I had the dragon roll with shrimp tempura, unagi and avocado. Very tasty. The salmon sashimi was quite fresh, and the pieces were big. My friends ordered several different rolls and they were all delicious. We ordered a plate of edemame to share however it didn't come until we were half way through our entree. It was eventually on the house which was nice. The waitress also forgot our soy sauce plate and we had to wait quite a while. There were four waiter/waitresses in the store and not a full house so we were a bit impatient with the wait. Overall a nice experience.

Took a long time to take our order. Very loud rap music playing...almost too loud to talk. Ordered the three combination bento box with the spicy yellowtail and spicy salmon. Sushi was tasty. Miso soup really good. Crab Rangoon was tasty as well. Overall good food. Would come back.

It saddens me that this place keeps sliding in a downward direction ... The new interior is pretty cool looking but waiting 45 minutes for one roll that was poorly crafted is disappointing. I'll give it another try because I love sushi & maybe it will be better

I have given Happy Fish three strikes, and they're out. After going to this restaurant for years between 2011 and now, I can say in the past year their quality of food and service has vastly declined. After having the same particular server each of the last of my "three strike" visits, they are so far "out" that I will never return. On the first horrendous encounter the server repeated back to us our order properly. Okay, great, we're ready to receive our delicious sushi. She brought out a bunch of sushi from left field, not at all what we ordered, and was taken aback when we told her it was wrong. On the second strike visit with Happy Fish the rolls were incredibly loose and tasted horrible. Today, 6/25/2015, was the icing on the cake. We went into Happy Hour (recently changed to 5pm-6pm) and placed our order, which was repeated back to us properly by the server. She re-stated unsweetened Ice Tea, we received sweetened. She re-stated Spring Rolls, we received Crab Rangoon. The rolls were loose. The nigiri never came. The miso soup came last. At 5pm, (the start of Happy Hour), they only had one server, and the second server got in about ten minutes late, causing the primary server to be slammed and offer horrible service. If you want to up your service game, Happy Fish, make sure that your wait staff arrives on time and that when servers repeat orders back to the customer they mean what they say. I have learned the hard way that if you are looking for a bargain on sushi, just pick a different genre of food. Pay the extra money and go to Sushi Gawa or Hokkaido. You truly get what you pay for and the service and quality of food are simply not there at Happy Fish anymore. I'm all for second and even third chances, but Happy Fish has struck out with me after three negative experiences in succession.

The sushi is just ok. It tends to fall apart and be ok. The service is good and ya fast and the inside is pretty clean. We orders one set of a roll and we got an Electra roll on accident but it was for free so that was nice. The drinks were always filled up and the staff was attentive.

My sister swears by Happy Fish, and it's one of her favorite spots to go in Peoria. So, while in town visiting her, I finally had a chance to try it for myself. I only ate takeout, so I'd like to come again in the future and dine in to potentially raise my star rating, but the food I ordered was tasty. I like their combination orders since it gives you a nice variety of food at a good price. The california rolls were fresh and tasty, and I liked the ginger salad and crab rangoons that came it. My sister wasn't kidding that the rangoon sauce they make for the rangoons is pretty terrific. I suppose it would be frowned upon to just drink it straight from the cup though!

My husband and I visited Happy Fish last week for the first time. We were pleasantly surprised by the great prices on the happy hour menu. We got crab Rangoon and four rolls: Happy, Bistro, Ninja, Mexican. Only one was on the happy hour menu. The Mexican roll was definitely a favorite. Everything tasted fresh. Our service was great. And the free miso soup was a nice surprise. We will definitely be going back to try some of the other rolls on the menu. Good variety and unique.

Wow... I can't believe someone would compare this to Sushi Gawa. Sushi is by far our favorite food, and while I wouldn't consider myself an expert, we frequent the other places in the area and also some in more major cities. First of all, my first impression was the place just felt a little dumpy. Our table was so slanted my bowl of miso soup literally would slide away from me if I didn't hold onto it. The booth we sat in had what felt like broken seats and my glass, spoon, and bowl weren't very clean. Not a huge deal, but not awesome when you're trusting this place to properly handle raw fish. We ordered a total of 3 rolls: one traditional (Tuna and avacado), and two specialty rolls (Bradley roll and volcano). We also got crab rangoon, ginger salad, and the free miso soup. Crab rangoon was good with the sauce they provided (the rangoon was bland by itself... if you like crab rangoon, I'd highly suggest China Express on Knoxville). The ginger salad and miso soup were pretty good too. The sushi really did me in though. The tuna and avacado was the only "roll" that was actually a roll that could be picked up and eaten. It was pretty good. Nice and simple. The tuna tasted fresh. However, the Bradley roll was literally a pile of rice laid out in a line, with some very small pieces of the tempura'ed stuff on top of it. Definitely not a roll... wasn't even an attempt at a roll. The rice wasn't sushi... not sticky or anything. I had to eat it with a fork like Chinese food. The taste was ok, but not great. The volcano roll was literally inedible. Like the Bradley roll, this was just a pile of stuff... and I couldn't find anything to pick up as a piece. I can't even put a finger on what exactly was wrong with the flavor of it, it was just bad. They said they tried cooking it differently (with a torch) and they thought that probably caused it. But it was a strange mix of very smokey salmon, funky tuna, butane-y torch, and imitation crab. I honestly would say it was the worst "sushi" I've eaten. The server and manager were very nice. We mentioned that the volcano roll didn't taste good and they voluntarily took it off our bill and offered to remake it for us. I definitely appreciated them taking it off the bill, but wasn't up for more of it. Bottom line, this place is the same price as great local sushi places, and it's NOWHERE near the quality. When you're eating raw fish, why would you trust someone other than an experienced sushi chef? I would honestly recommend Kroger, HyVee, or Fresh Market over anything I had here.

Love their rainbow roll. They have an all you can eat deal Sunday afternoons, lol but I can't eat more than one roll. Close to the university so parking is limited. Staff friendly. They do have a bar where you can watch them work

I completely agree with whoever said this is the McDonalds of Sushi. Very low quality and there is definitely better sushi in town. It's only redeeming quality was the best crab Rangoon in town, but they changed the recipe for that and raised there prices on their low quality food. If you want decent sushi not the place to go. Definite disappoint that just keeps getting worse.

For college kids on a budget this is just fine. $4.95 traditional rolls and they also have specialty rolls like the "Ninja Roll" which are more Americanized. The green tea is just a normal tea bag in the cup. Miso Soup is free with your order! Staff was very friendly.

Came here twice. First time miso soup was bland. Second time really salty. Sushi was just so so. Didn't taste that fresh. But than again we are in Peoria so why did I even come here.

I love sushi, eat it frequently, and prior to my experience at Happy Fish, I've never had terribly awful sushi. To give you an idea of how bad things were, they didn't even have wasabi. Now I'm sure some of you are not big fans of wasabi, but come on, this is a sushi bar with no wasabi? Ridiculous. Our soy sauce was extremely salty and extremely strong. Don't get me wrong. I know it's soy sauce, but it had this awful bitter aftertaste to it. And we didn't even have wasabi to mask the flavor. To add to the soy sauce madness, the Veggie Roll didn't contain any seaweed, it was wrapped with rice paper and rolled in sesame seeds. It was extremely bland. The veggies in the California Roll weren't fresh. I could go on and on, but the bottom line: it wasn't good. To top that off, service is curt, uninviting, and unprofessional. When other patrons expressed discontent with their food, the manager/owner would simply yell in their faces. Granted, I was here during their busy happy hour, but I can't really imagine a situation where management yelling at customers is appropriate. Vegetarians, there's not much on the menu for you. I was eating with a vegetarian friend, and when we asked them to remove the fish from one of their $5 rolls, but they rudely stated "No changes to happy hour menu." I get that if we were asking to add items to the maki, but we were asking them to REMOVE stuff, which actually saves them money, so I can't really understand this. The edamame portion is generous (for the happy hour price tag of $2, that is), but grossly over-salted. If you are going, order lots of $2 sake bombs so you don't notice the awful service, and order the seaweed salad, which is decent.

I've been to happy fish several times, as I have a sibling who lives near it. I've never had a bad experience. I wish I could give 3.5 stars. The sushi itself is good, especially considering that it's in Peoria, Illinois. With that in mind, I'd give it four stars. However, I think it deserves three on the grand scale of things, as there is better sushi to be had even in Peoria. They have a small section of traditional maki, some inventive and monstrous specialty rolls, nigiri, appetizers, etc. The fish is all relatively fresh and the rolls are made fairly well. It's very Americanized sushi, but what else can you expect? It does taste good, though. I've had a multitude of rolls and the only one that I thought missed the mark was the scallop nigiri. Service can be slow if it's a busy night. Your server can also get bogged down, as it seems like sometimes they don't have enough people working the floor. In either case, it's a college-kid type of place and it does it's job: serve some of the better sushi in Peoria at great prices in a fun, laid back atmosphere.

I've never really had good service here. I went to dine-in and it took a good 15-20 minutes before anyone helped me. I've ordered carry-out and they forgot the wasabi and ginger. I haven't tried many of the rolls, I usually get the nigiri and it's decent. But, I'd rather go elsewhere for my sushi needs.

My sushi knowledge is a lot like my wine knowledge. I don't know enough about it to be a real connoisseur or be able to talk about the fine points. I tend to feel like that it is a pretty traditionally prepared food where you get more notoriety with all the crazy shit you throw in there. But here is what else I know. We came last night during Happy Hour. There appeared to be one server one, with three or four tables. We were a table of 7. Now if there's anything I hate, it's when one of the people in the party is a former server and passively aggressively mutters under their breath about the shortcomings of the restaurant. I will call this person "Mouth." Seth was our server. He was alright. We all arrived and it took about 10 minutes to order and receive drinks. We placed our orders and they came out on communal plates when some of us had ordered the same items. About halfway through, Mouth realizes there is no mango in the particular roll they ordered. In my restaurant, when we're out of something, we give the guest a heads up. Mouth stated that they probably would've liked to have known that so they could order something else. Also, it made Seth look dumb because he didn't know any better either. Not his fault. Much as I hate to agree with Mouth, I share their opinion there. Mouth decides to finish anyway. Seth apologized and life went on. I'm a big texture guy when it comes to food, so one roll I loved and the other not so much. My Rooster Roll with chicken had a hard time staying together, but the Rock and Roll was amazing. Overall, if it wasn't Happy Hour, I'm not sure I'd be totally compelled to come back. Group consensus was generally mixed, but it seemed like the Meh's have it.

I waited over 20 minutes for 2 rolls. The sushi was great but the service needs help.

I was planning a sushi outing in conjunction with a business trip to Peoria and thought I would go to Sushi Gawa until I read the reviews of this place on Yelp (two great and one not so much - wonder what he was thinking!?!). I am SO glad I went to Happy Fish instead of Gawa on this trip. Sitting at the sushi bar, I was able to watch what was going out to the tables for a while before ordering. I enjoyed the free miso soup and finally settled on a chef's selection after speaking to the chef/owner for a while. He has a great concept going - you order the chef's selection based on how much you want to spend...and then you get surprised by the quantity/quality of what you are served. I thought the fish was among the freshest I have had in the Midwest and the experience rivaled some of the best places in California and NYC that I have visited. I was especially impressed by how personable Adam (the owner) was and I think I learned a few things about sushi as a result of our conversation. When (not if) you go, you've got to try the skydiver roll if you like softshell crab. I'll definitely be back and I have already recommended this place to a few friends...including one who is the co-owner of a bar/restaurant located a few doors down from Happy Fish.
