OK. I was truly afraid of this place. But one day the fam decided to stop and grab a snack. Everything was wonderfully priced. I had a blizzard equivalent, son had a cup of ice cream,Hubby had an ice cream cone. Mine was the most but well worth it. Order a small. You do get a lot for your money and unless you are there to have dessert for dinner, get the small! :) But hey who can complain. I finally can go somewhere and get more than what I paid for.

Love this place! However, in the summer there can be bees because it is outside.

Dairy Mart is an old burger stand on rt 47. We pass by this place a few times a month, and never thought to try it...till this past weekend. The menu is more extensive than you would expect, but not over the top. Between my husband and I we enjoyed a cheeseburger--HOT off the grill, (complete with lightly grilled onion MM!!!!) cheese fries that were actually good, a diet coke and a black cherry shake. Everything was satisfying, and a little better than expected.

I absolutely love this place. It just exhudes that hometown mom & pop shop feeling and that's exactly why i keep going there. Their food is iffy, but the ice cream....TO DIE FOR :)

This place is so charming in a small town like setting. The patio is open in the good weather months (in Chgo that is May - Aug), and they enclose and heat it in the winter. The food is hot off the grill, you can order ahead to pick it up, and the ice cream is way better than other soft serve. We can go there for an after dinner treat for a family of 5 and get away under $10. Just be careful during spring and summer after baseball and soccer games, it gets crowded, but so fun to hang out there with the other familes. It is a gem on Rt 47!

The last time I visited they had a sign up in the window saying s'mores sundaes were back. I had never had one of these before but I knew I needed to try it. It was amazing. I have yet to be disappointed with any of the ice cream treats I've ordered here. Plus the prices are very fair. Remember to bring cash because credit card cost a little upcharge to use. My husband tried out their cheese curds and he bragged about how awesome they were and about how I didn't have any so I am going to go back soon to get a whole meal.

Since moving to Huntley we made this place a great weekend family trip for ice cream. First off if it's packed don't bother. Their parking lot isn't that big and last time I was their I guess was their nightly rush because we were blocked in for 30 min. Other then parking everything her is great. My 3 year old wanted red ice cream so the worker dipped his vanilla cone into a cherry dip. He gets it every time we go. My wife loves their Chicago dog and I love their cheese fries. They put them in a cup and dump the cheese in. So good. Also try their turtle sundae. OMG it's so good. I would give more stars but the parking and location really hurt my review. It's right off 47 so if you have kids that like to run make sure they are always by your side. Enjoy!

While certainly not a "Midwest thing," independent burger shops seem to have a better record of longevity in the Midwest than other parts of the country I have traveled through. The "Dairy Mart" in Huntley, IL, about 50 miles west of Chicago, is one such local institution. Serving all the Chicago favorites, hot dogs, sausage, Italian beef, burgers, fried dinner plates, and fountain treats, the Dairy Mart is busy most times of day, most days of the year, and food is cooked to order. I went with a cheeseburger and tots, and the hand-formed patty had a nice char from a flattop and was nicely seasoned (I'm guessing a little Season Salt and a little onion powder, but I could be wrong) (and frequently am), and the deep fried tots were done to perfection. I love this place.

Great local vintage ice cream & snack stand. Good quality products. Cheaper than all of the other locally owned ice cream shops. Local hot spot.

  • Ann S.

Customer service was absolutely friendly on point for explaining details on menu and they move quickly. Surrounding sitting area clean and even though it's right next to a busy street, it doesn't even make it a negative factor. Turtle sundae definitely amazing

Very friendly service and yummy ice cream! Next time I pass that why I hope to stop again and try more from the menu.

Classic small town ice cream shop specializing in yummy soft serve. Great hot dogs etc. If I lived closer we would be regulars. There is a small sheltered area, but if it is raining hard you might want to pass.

Dairy Mart is a local treasure, and our family loves it there. Whether we are in the mood for a treat (ice cream) or running late and need lunch or dinner, we have always had great food and experiences. I love that you can call ahead and order for pick up. The food is consistently good, and the service is friendly. We love this local, delicious little diamond.

  • Sarah H.

Most times we come to the Dairy Mart, it's for ice cream. Occasionally we'll also order food (which is good). But the ice cream is the best! My favorite is a 1/2 & 1/2 cone with sprinkles. YES, PLEASE CAN I HAVE ANOTHER? It's the smallest little joint ever, but totally worth it. It's typically swarming with people in the summer time there for ice cream --- especially sports teams. But this establishment is a staple for my family come summer time. We were just there over the weekend for our 1st cone of the season. And we'll be back for plenty more!

  • Jesus H.

Love this place! Best ice cream around in an old time setting. However I rarely go because of how dangerous the location is. Filled with kids from after soccer and baseball games. Yet, just feet away are speeding cars on a 4+ lane highway with no rail or barrier. The village should install concrete posts all around this building. Or at the very least a metal railing preventing cars from going into that area during a wreck! Kids plus highways with no barrier is a recipe for a tragic outcome! It is only a matter of time before a car goes crashing into a group of kids getting ice cream.

This place is a local favorite, great ice cream and fun foods. Atmosphere and service remind me of the places our parents and grandparents would go to after a football game at the high school. Fun place.

Love this place! An original drive in! Great hot dogs, burgers and shakes! Awesome ice cream! Rain, shine, warm or cold it is all worth it!

This place is phenomenal. Thanks to the increase in the tolls on I-90, I had to find a new route to work, and as fate would have it, this new route leads me right past this place every day. Just from the looks of it I could tell it was something good. I resisted as along as I could, but you can only hold out for so long. First, the size of the menu is pretty incredible, especially given how small the place is. This food is excellent, and on top of that, the prices are CHEAP. You really can't go wrong coming here.

I have been in this town since 1987. This has always been a great spot for better then fast food and good ice cream. Within the last year, the service has been horrible. My wife went there to pick up our food and was scolded for ordering too late. She had called earlier to ask how late they were open and placed the order more then thirty minutes before she was told they would take order. I used to think this was a good place...until things change, we and everyone I know will not go back.

Love this place! Doesn't look like much from the outside but food and ice cream treats are fantastic! You can't beat their cheeseburger prices! Love the peanut butter milkshakes!

My family loves the dairy mart. It's the only place my kids want to go in the summer. Great food. Yummy ice cream. Takes forever to get your order because its usually packed in warmer weather, but totally worth the wait. It's a must when passing through Huntley.

    (5)
  • Alex K.

Reasonablly prices. It's better than going to Dairy Queen because we are supporting local businesses but the food isn't all that great. I don't know if anything is out of a can. The atmosphere reminds me of going to a A&W Root Beer Joint but it's not that all cracked up to be.

All I have to say is YUM YUM YUM!!! =D....but i don't like the normal fries.....I guess I'm just used to McDonald's fries =/.....but their buffalo fries ROCK!

This place has been around as long as I can remember, when were hungry we grab the neighbors and walk down here. After games and sports we come here to get icecream. It's a old small place but tons and tons of memories everywhere:D

Love this place! Such a quaint reminder of how life used to be....simple and family owed. Haven't eaten the food yet but will make a point of it next time. The ice cream and atmosphere are enough to keep me coming back.

This place is our family favorite. The menu is extensive, so there's always something for everyone. They always make it fast and fresh, so the food is yummy. But, hands down, this is where we live for Ice Cream treats. The prices cannot be beat and it is sooooo yummy! We love Dairy Mart's small town, family owned atmosphere and it polite and helpful staff. We love The Dairy Mart!

I live about seven minutes from Huntley Dairy Mart and you can probably find me there four days out of the week in summer. Even though I don't usually go in the winter, it is open for business. The ice cream is so good and the prices are excellent. You get more than what you pay for and they have a great selection of food and different combinations of ice cream and milkshakes. Best ice cream place EVER.

  • Charlene M.

This is a perfect small town stablishment that has been here forever and still serves awesome fast food and ice cream. This is that wholesome place where you can take your child an ice cream cone and enjoy the simplicities in life.

Tried this place last night based on the Yelp reviews. We had corn dogs, double cheeseburger, cheese fries, and a meatball sub to eat. Chocolate and Vanilla milkshakes and a coke to drink. Food was great, but we had to eat quickly because the small seating area isn't heated enough. Wasn't terrible, but it was pretty chilly. In summertime this place would be better. But I'd go again even with it chilly. Reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because they charge $.50 for credit card transactions and they charge for soft drink refills. I know it's a small business, but build that stuff into your prices. Don't make it look like you're nickel and diming your patrons who are supporting you.

  • Ryan P.

Love love love the Huntley Dairy Mart. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu! I recommend bringing cash. They do take credit cards but there is a fee for it. The prices are a bit high but the food is sooooooo good that it seems worth it.

  • Whitney N.

Dairy Mart is and (hopefully) always will be a Huntley staple. If you haven't tried it and are curious, you must. Sundaes, cheese fries, pizza puffs and burgers are usually my go to. Sometimes you're better off calling ahead to order to avoid waiting and eat there or take it home.

Standard ice cream selection. I think this place is over rated.

  • Eric E.

This joint might be viewed as an ice cream shop but their menu goes on and on and on. We stopped today for the ice cream but I shoveled back a fried cheese curd too, which was pretty damn good. I settled on their version of a blizzard which was a large serving for a better than the average bear price. They also had a few unusual toppings not seen at many ice cream shops..I had mint chocolate chips tossed in mine. As I said, their food menu is beyond lengthy. Ice cream joints tend to serve burgers, fries, soft drinks, etc..Dairy Mart's menu has upwards of 50 different choices to pick from. Judging by the # of patrons eating here the food is as good as their ice cream.

My Husband took me here and I loved it! The ice cream is so good and I am addicted to their chicken sandwich.

What's not to love about this place? Quite a menu, more than you would think at a roadside place known for its ice cream. Good food and terrific ice cream. Super friendly staff too!

  • Sara B.

I've been going to this place since I was a kid. It's a country drive-in with a simple menu -- burgers, cheese-and-chili-fries, onion rings, etc. But for me, it's worth a trip for their 'Boston' shakes. What are they, you ask? A thick, thick milkshake with an ENTIRE SUNDAE on top. The combination is up to you, but I always go for a chocolate shake with a hot-fudge sundae on top. And order a small, which is still an entire day's worth of calorie intake, trust me. Sooooo ooey-gooey good.

  • Sarah H.

SO AWESOME!! Creamy and fresh ice cream. Good food and great variety. Super convenient call ahead takeout service. I always get a chocolate dipped cone, but I've tried a lot and it's all delicious.

The BEST soft-serve you can get! Any time we are in the area and the Dairy Mart is open, it is a must to stop by and get a swirl cone.

Cheese curds. Smoothies. Hot dogs. Corn dogs. Fried foods. What more can you ask for in an old burger stand right off of Route 47 in the middle of Huntley?!? We came for cheese curds, and a bag of warm, gooey, toasty cheese curds is what we got! I have to agree with the bf when he said they were some of the best he's ever had. We also got an order of battered mushrooms. Another fave of mine. They were also cooked perfectly. Since we had just come from lunch a couple hours before, our ordering stopped there. But I couldn't help myself from wanting a tamale, corn dog, fried cauliflower and shake. Resisting was tough, but I made it through. The service was fast and friendly. There wasn't any extra charges for extra condiments ((i.e., I'm a ranch whore)) which most places like to charge you for these days. I love the old, vintage hamburger stand that has been there since 1955. Huntley is a hike, but those cheese curds were worth it. My next adventure up the 90 will definitely have a pit stop built in for some more delectable eats from the Dairy Mart.

If I have a bad day at work - the best remedy is to go home, put on comfy clothes - pile the wife and pooch in the car and go to Dairy Mart - always puts me in a better mood....Why? Great Ice Cream!!!! And - much less expensive (and better) than The Freeze in C.L., (which is within walking distance from our house.) Friendly kids working there - and a kids vanilla cone for 95 cents (which our dog LOVES - he goes crazy in the car if we are within a mile radius of Dairy Mart). I always get the Blueberry or Brownie Sunday - both of which are great - wife loves that they make thier version of the blizzard w/peanut M&Ms. Oh, and the hot dogs were really good as well.

Great little place for an ice cream treat or a quick bite to eat. They have pretty much any side you can think of from traditional cheese fries to egg rolls? Love coming here with family because it is truly a locals favorite and everyone is nice.

The Dairy Mart was always something we drove past on our way to Lake Geneva but hadn't stopped in for about a decade. That was until one night when my mom and I had a taste for good ice cream. The Dairy Mart did not disappoint. We both ordered vanilla chocolate dipped cones. I've ordered so many in my lifetime, I know that they can go horribly wrong. But not here. The cone was a perfect mix of creamy vanilla and chocolate covered crunch. So yummy! This is one of those places that are hard to find anymore. It's a local establishment that puts quality first in their products. I can't wait for summertime so I can once again hit up the Dairy Mart for some more ice cream.

I grew up on Dairy Mart and have been going here for 18 years. And with the exception of the widening of Route 47, not much has changed. Which is something that I love. This is a classic drive-in restaurant that has been in existence since the 1950s and is a Huntley icon. One of the few places left in Huntley that retains that small-town charm. Their burgers, hot dogs (done Chicago style of course), and cheese fries are amazing. Good chicken dinners too. They also have a plethora of other great items (corn dogs, gyros, pizza puffs, onion rings, meatball sandwiches, you name it). And their shakes and ice cream are to die for. They have an extensive food and ice cream menu, so you're sure to find something. The hard part will be deciding. A few words of advice for newbies and out-of-towners: Call ahead (847-669-5737...yes, I know it by heart)...they typically will have your order ready in 5-10 minutes and you won't have to wait in line with everyone else. Food orders are taken at the main window (under the canopy). If you're only getting ice cream, you can go around to the side window that faces Rt. 47. Bring cash, otherwise there's a $0.50 charge on debit/credit cards. Seating is outdoor only (under the canopy) and is somewhat limited, so unless you're going here during off-peak hours on a beautiful day, it's best to carry out. Also, be forewarned that this place can get busy during the lunch hour on the weekends and on summer nights, especially when baseball teams stop here after a win. So try to go a little bit off-peak if you can (i.e. 11am or 2pm for lunch) and on summer nights, you just kinda have to roll the dice. There's a reason why this place gets busy though...because it is so good. While I have moved an hour away, Dairy Mart is one of the few places that I will go back to any chance I get.

  • Tom F.

I really enjoy the dairy mart. The people are very friendly. The prices to make a high but you get good food for the price. When I'm in the area I try to go back because of the food. You can sit in your car eat the food or you can set tables with heaters above your head. There is a McDonalds across the street but if you want for food you can go to the dairy Mart and get it there.

  • Catherine P.

Chocolate covered frozen bananas...all I have to say!!! ...Well, maybe not. This place has been there forever. They are right in downtown Huntley and are a great place to take the kids, grandma or a date if you are looking for a fun place to hang out. I understand there is more than ice cream there, too; They have a full menu and people are always eating when we drive past. Great fun little place and easy on the wallet.

This is a total "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" type place that's been around since 1955. It's definitely loved by the locals due to how many people crowd it every day. Not even the McDonald's right across the street can stop the town's love! I ate here two consecutive days when my 13 year old son played in a weekend baseball tournament up the street. Meal #1: Fried haddock dinner with fries, coleslaw, a dinner roll, and a Coke. They only have the haddock on Friday. It was all very good and the portions were large - more than enough food for one person. Since I saw dozens of people with awesome-looking ice cream cones and sundaes, I then had to get dessert despite not finishing the fish & chips. I had a butterscotch shake and it was GREAT. Meal #2: 2 corn dogs, fries, root beer per Dairy Mart's daily special for that particular day of the week. It was all really good, cheap, and the corn dogs were NOT the lame-tasting kind - they were quality. I live pretty far away from Huntley, so I couldn't say no to dessert considering it's unlikely I'd ever find myself there again. So this time I got a black cherry shake. AWESOME! I don't know if their ice cream is frozen custard or regular soft-serve (I'm positive it's not hand-scooped ice cream), but it tasted a heck of a lot better than Dairy Queen. The employees were friendly, the prices were reasonable, the food was prepared correctly, and the place has a classic old-fashioned vibe (probably because it's genuinely old and they haven't changed much since they opened in 1955). I highly recommend Dairy Mart over the typical, boring corporate fast food mega-chains that you can visit anywhere in America. 5 stars from me. Well done, Dairy Mart!

  • Cheryl B.

I am confident that my group of friends and I were the exact type of people that the regulars hate, but, hey, we city folk had a good time. We eyed Dairy Mart on our way to Homestead Orchard, and had to stop on our way back. The five of us destroyed: Double mushroom cheeseburger Chicken Dumpling Soup Italian Beef Sandwich 2 Beef Tamales Meatball Sub Buffalo Fries, curly fries, mozzarella sticks, fried mushrooms, fried cauliflower and onion rings. And then for dessert we had cones and shakes. Basically, we are rock stars. There is some indoor patio seating and then three or four tables under an awning outside. It was a beautiful fall day, so we moved one of the hexagon tables into the parking lot (see, totally irritating) and enjoyed our artery clogging delights in the sunshine, while Mcdonalds imperviously stared back at us across the street. They take cards if your bill is more than $10, or if you are willing to pay a 50 cent fee. It is open from 9-9 and you can call your order in ahead. From our light snack, we especially liked the italian beef, the onion rings, the fried cauliflower and the buffalo fries. The buffalo fries are spicy, battered chip-shaped fries that are simply incredible. The cones were delicious, but our shakes (especially the chocolate-peanut butter), though well executed (he put an actual scoop of Jif in it), were so sweet no one could handle it. I grew up in LA and towns like Huntley and local hangouts like Dairy Mart are endlessly endearing. So friendly, so simple; it was the perfect ending to our afternoon at the Homestead Apple Orchard.

Best ice cream around! Don't know what they put in it but it's like crack! Love their Bosco sticks and hamburgers...Very cheap prices and food is ready within a couple minutes...

  • Jeffrey S.

I really wanted to like this place as I'm a big fan of supporting local business as opposed to your boiler plate ice cream joints like Cold Stone or, dare I say it, Dairy Queen..... But if I'm being honest, it just didn't live up to any of my expectations. First, service was good, however, the "ice cream" was sub par at its very best. Spare yourself the $3.75 and DON'T get the brownie sundae. The brownie was of the pre-packaged store bought variety that offered nothing in terms of taste and everything in terms of difficulty to negotiate out of the container. The ice cream was just that... ice.... with some cream. Again I hate to leave a scathing review, but the ice cream just seemed cheap. I felt as though I was eating at a place that was under new management, but the new management cared nothing for the business and was only in it for the bottom line. Anyway, I couldn't in good conscious, refer this place to anyone...

We go to the Dairy Mart all the time. In the evenings and when its hot out, you usually can't get near the place. I've never tried the food, so I will bow to other reviews, but the ice cream is excellent. The staff is always friendly and always gets the order correct. Good value for the money too.

Dairy Mart is a staple restaurant in Huntley. Really good food. It has been in business since the 60's I think and hasn't seen too much updating on the outside...but what is important is the food! Try the crunchy sprinkles on your ice cream cone. The seasoned fries with cheese are great and the chicken sandwhich is really good as well. Husband loves the burgers and the "dip" cones! YUM!
