Scrumptious vegetarian sandwich-fig and goat cheese! Substituted the frites instead of chips, and they were delicious, and enough for 4 people. Excellent drink and beer selection. Would definitely return when in the Galena.

This is one of the nicest restaurants in Galena. It's a small place at the upper end of main st. Just past all the tourist shops. They serve a mix of French and German food. We enjoyed the charcuterie - several nice meats along with pâté. The flavors reminded me of the food I had on a recent trip to Paris. The baked Brie was nice. Served with slices of apple. A pretzel was served with mustard and a caramel sauce. Dessert was a delicious apple strudel with a small scoop of some very good vanilla ice cream.

Cute spot downtown Galena where the food was generous and the service friendly. When I called at 9pm and wanted dinner after traveling all day, the other place recommended by the hotel said they would not serve me at that hour (really? on a Thursday?) and to give Fritz and Frites and try. I'm so glad I did! They were very kind when I called to ask if it'd be too late for dinner. When I arrived, they greeted me promptly, and although I was the only guest in the place (apparently the whole town shuts down early), I felt well-taken care of. The decor reminded me of the time I lived in Paris, and the French music playing softly certainly added to the ambiance. So nice! I ordered a steak frites, a popular French bistro dish, and the frites, AKA fries, were sliced shoestring thin and were piled high on the plate - very generous portion that bordered on obnoxious. They could have used a little salt, but I'm a salt-loving gal. The steak was cooked medium, as I ordered, and while tasty was just a little bit away from melt-in-your-mouth - but not quite what you could call tough. I ate every bite, so it wasn't bad at all. It was a different kind of steak, as I recall now (I had been in the car all day, so I went with it, but forget now.) Had I not been in the mood for a steak, I would have had a difficult time ordering because the menu looked fantastic. The next time I go to Galena, I will be back for sure to try a few of the other items.

I have really come to love this restaurant in Galena. The ambiance is not matched by any other place in Galena. I'm not sure if it's perfect or if it just perfectly fits my personality. You have to walk a short 1/2 block further than the primary Main St. shopping in downtown Galena. Which after a long day of shopping, might seem far, but it's totally worth it! In fact, I think just being a small step off the higher traffic area is what makes the place even more charming. Their menu was recently expanded around Feb. 2010, so if you thought it was a short menu like I did, give it another try. They also just added brunch on Sundays. YUM!

... got the steak and originally ordered it medium but the waitress said "the steak only comes medium rare." So sure I will take it medium rare if that's the way it is served. So the steak comes and it's WELL WELL done and when I mentioned this to the server the first time she says "oh it's OK" so i keep eating hoping the center will be at least medium, but no. So i talk to the server a second time and she says "oh, i see, It's really cooked! You want me to bring it back?" Being one of the last tables there (we made reservation for 8:30) and getting seated 30 min later and getting the food an hour later (10pm), I passed on getting a new steak. It seemed as if they didn't want our business and if that was the case we could have went somewhere else.... our group is friendly, and my Fiance owns a restaurant, so we can understand certain situations, but this was just horrible ! There were other problems such as the poor service. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!! BTW the bill was $260. We deserve better food and service! Went to McDonalds and spent $8.56 on more food cause I was not satisfied and still hungry!

This restaurant gets 5 stars for ambiance and service - our waitress was lovely and attentive. French music in the background, nice wine selection, and fitting decor. We shared a seafood chowder which was AMAZING. So pleasing to eat, creamy and chock full of seafood. My boyfriend had a sausage plate which included sausage, pork, and bratwurst which were all flavorful and delicious. The sauerkraut was amazing as well. I had the mussels in a white wine/garlic reduction. Do not order the mussels. They were briney and flavorless. We told the waitress and she only charged us for a half-order instead of a full, which was nice. Overall, a nice restaurant in Galena. Sad about the mussels though.

The food was delicious and the atmosphere really relaxing but I felt it was overpriced. If my wallet was overflowing,I'd go back and just order more food. My husband and I drove out from the center of town 7 miles to the Goldmoor Inn and found presentation, price, taste, and atmosphere. We'll definitely go back there for a special night out.

Awful. We had a group of almost 20. Having said that perhaps the chef was just too busy to make it good, but who knows. I had the "steak and frites". My steak was drizzled with about 1 gallon of red wine reduction that was waaay too sweet and tangy. I could barely taste the meat. Before that i had the worst ceasar salad i think i've ever had in my life. My niece had a dish with a pool of ratatouille on the bottom. I've never had rataouille before. But if i base my first experience on this, it's really gross. I was a mushy mixture of overcooked vegetables with some very strange spices in a red sauce. it was very mushy, and the color was dark and scary. If you are looking for a decent restaurant in Galena, DO NOT get your hopes up. I would recommend searching for restaurants in Dubuque. the only restaurant i liked in Galena was Little Tokyo.

We only spent one full day in Galena, IL and decided we wanted to make the most of it, including eating at a fine restaurant. On the advice of locals from the Old Market House Welcome Center & the European chocolate store, we decided to eat at Fritz and Frites and glad we did. The ambiance is adorable and the food is incredible. We both enjoyed the French Onion soup, 1/2 order of mussels with champagne sauce, and Weinerschnitzel with red cabbage. For desert, we had this wonderful black forest (flourless) cake with berry sauce! We were both impressed with the service, food, and the overall price paid for everything. If you are a mom and dad with one of those mini-van looking strollers or with toddlers, please go to the pizza place down the street...this place spells romance all over for couples. Loved it!

Our waitress was the worst we ever encountered. We had to ask to receive bread. Lots of the meals are written in German so we asked her what a couple of meals were and she would just get quiet and say "a different type of meat." Well as it turned out my husband ended up ordering liver sausage which was tasteless. I order a brat which was only okay. The warm German potato salad was not that good. In addition the menu was a little confusing bc I thought I was getting fries with mine so either the place messed up and never have it to me or the menu should be more clear (I didn't even bother to ask our waitress).

They are REALLY REALLY REALLY into Halloween in downtown Galena, I mean people line up for HOURS (all day?) until it gets dark and COLDER for a parade they BUS people to. So that is what we stumbled weirdly into on a Fall leaf drive to Galena and try Fritz and Frites. We enjoyed our escape from the creepy crowded zombie free-for-all outside a lot at Fritz & Frites, a total Yelp success story since we chose it completely off the reviews. Nice clean bistro look with checkerboard black and white floor tiles, lots of mirrors and French art. About 15 tables in 2's and 4's, nice size but not big and those two person tables are small. We found it fairly loud in there even without the hinted at entertainment on the weekends. So is it French or German? The wines are largely French, completely French in the excellent by the glass choices and all under $9 and they offered to let us taste first which was much appreciated. And I would say the appetizers are largely French and we went for a melted brie with calvados, and a half order of mussels that were SO puny- I would have been ashamed to have served them at home, but fortunately our server Nellie had encouraged us to try the EXCELLENT champagne and cream broth and it was gone faster than those stunted mussels. Salads leaned largely french too but then the Germans did take over on the main courses, other than a steak and frites spotted at the bottom of the menu. We had a beef rouladen wrapped around a half pickle slice plus red cabbage and spaetzle, and the sausage and smoked meat (ham butt) plate included sauerkraut and red potatoes- hearty. Both were very good, we had small leftovers and the table service was excellent. We also saw several schnitzels go by and they were beautiful. We had made a reservation earlier in the day, and I recommend that particularly on a Saturday night, but there were still 1 or 2 tables open so wing it if you are in the area. Solid 4 on a first visit, we are Fans. Bon Appetit Auf Wiedersehen.

After raving about this place last year and giving them 5 stars, I am revising my original review which will be below the new review I will say that this place is one of the better places in Galena, but when this place is busy, their service lacks. The host sure is a host, and that is it! The host this time around was not helpful in anything but sitting his guests and going straight back to the door to stand and wait and wait and wait for the next party to come through. Not only did he wait there, but when he walked back and forth, he was unavailable to answer a simple question. This was when we go there and their was only 3 other tables seated. The waiter we had seemed very eager to impress, but that fell short when he could not make a simple drink on the cocktail and drink menu. It took him 15 minutes for my girlfriend to get her drink, all the while, I had asked him for his opinion on one wine over 4 others, which I thought his recommendation was outstanding since it was not the most expensive wine I had listed, until I realized on our bill that he recommended a wine that had two listings, 1 for $44 a bottle, the other $59, and guess which one he tried to charge us for? you go it, the more expensive one, I guess that is why we tipped a little less than the standard 20%, but now wish, I did less than 15%. I wanted to reiterate that when we got there, we were the 4th table seated, prior to leaving, the place had filled up all but 1 table, all of this with 2 servers, a bus boy and a host that was still waiting and standing by the door, not offering any assistance to get the other patrons a water, or bread, or anything. I still recommend this place, but I would say to try and go during a quieter period, not during the rush of the dinner crowd between 6 & 8 on the weekend. The food is still superb!, but service is lacking. Also, they need to update their drink menu and maybe get a bartender so the wait staff does not need to prepare the drinks and can focus on what they do best and that is to service their patrons. Prior Review: After having to choose between this place and Tokyo Sushi, I am glad we choose this place. The service was the best I had while visiting Galena. The German/French food was awesome. I had the Wiener Schnitzel "Veal Breaded" and will say that along with the res cabbage and Spatzle, I couldn't of been more impressed. My girlfriend had the Mussels in Pernod, Tomato & Fennel and they were done right and were larger than I usually see at a restaurant. The service was also great. Our server knew her wines and how to pair them with the meal along with offering additional insight. The meal was well worth the price at around 15 per meal. When back in Galena, I will be going back!

We walked in and the service was amazing. The escargot was meh. The schnitzel was GORGEOUS. The salmon was good, and we agreed that we think we're just people that like delicate salmon, but this was a more masculine variety of dish. The server was helpful and attentive, the maitre'd was great and helped us select lovely beers to pair with our meal, and the chef was on par. A little gem of a restaurant for a nice meal.

We went there last evening and really wanted it to be a hit, but it turned out as glancing blow. For starters we had the Pate Maison which was excellent. It was complemented with baby dill pickles and perfectly done crustinnis. We moved on to the soup d'jour, split pea with smoked sausage, not bad, but not great. My wife liked it although she thought it was a bit sweet. Personally I felt the thyme was overpowering. For the main course my wife had the sauerbraten with red cabbage and spaetzel. This is a dish she first had in Cologne Germany last year and felt it was almost as good. However, the cabbage juices mixed in since they were served on the same plate, and affected the overall quality. It should be served separately. The spaetzel was spot on. I had the Wiener schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzel. The breading was excellent, but with regards to the veal, all I can say is "Where's the Beef?" The meat was thinner than the coating. The cabbage was much too vinegary for my taste. We did pass on dessert. Finally, the hostess and head chef/owner (?) we're extremely gracious, but our server was virtually non-existent. There was another server, and he was very attentive to his tables and actually took care of us when he noticed us looking for our server. It was a small enough room, that her absence was very obvious. All in all, we will give them another chance as well as different main courses. I took quite a bit of time on this review because we really want to make this restaurant one of our favorites.

The food was amazing! We had the duck liver pate for an appetizer. I have never tasted anything like it! My goat cheese and Brie sandwich was delectable and the soup was great too. My husband loved his sauerbraten. Would have checked out the dessert but we were simply too stuffed! Our waiter was very friendly. The only thing I didn't like was that they had a wide selection of beers but no beer list - you had to get up out of your chair to view the beer bottles displayed on the wall. For such a classy place, I was very surprised by that. I get that you don't want to print your beer list all the time, but it was pretty inconvenient and the beer bottles on the wall were pretty tacky. Overall we were happy with our experience and would definitely go back.

FANTASTIC restaurant in Galena!! We were steering away from this place because we really didnt want German food, however they have such a great variety. We had the brie app, frise salad and mussels. The cream mussels were amazing. The Provencal mussels were also good but second best to the others. I have to say, the mussels were some of the best I have had in a long, long time. I was really surprised! The frites....AMAZING!!! Our server was great (Tim) and they always were filling up the water! By far, the best restaurant that we experienced in Galena!

If you're in Galena and starting from the "gate" end of Main Street, make sure you go far enough to stop in at Fritz and Frites! My wife and I stopped here for lunch and the food was excellent, the decor and ambience authentic. We shared the "quiche du jour" - mushroom today - served simply with a crisp green salad. Really really good. The BLT on a croissant was similarly excellent and the profiteroles dessert was a great finish. Fritz and Frites - highly recommended!

This is one of my favorite places in Galena. We were tipped off by one of the local winery's about this place. It's a German French Bistro. The true test if any French Bistro is Roast Chicken, and boy did they knock that out if the park, truly superb! My only compliant was the frites there just too small and too crisp.. Has the chef actually tried to eat them.... they are so crisp they end up textually like those horrible canned shoestrings. There too thinl and crisp to eat with a fork and the restaurant is to nice to eat them with your hands, it makes an unpleasant experience. But that wouldn't stop me from returning for one second. I also really enjoyed the Onion soup. They have a wonderful selection of bottled beer, some really had to find selections. I look forward to returning next time we return to the area

"A little French, a little German, a little [cute] bistro..." You'll agree that their motto says it all once you visit. The first feat is finding the place alllll the way at the far northern end of the Main Street shopping strip (an advantage is you escape the crowds a bit). Once you climb your way to the pretzel sign, the hardest part is over. The second feat is to concentrate: Before getting pulled in to the adorable decor that is a European mix, take a glance at the variety of foreign beers sitting along the wall and the wines written on the chalkboards. Once you decide on what to drink, you can then take the time to enjoy your surroundings. The friendly staff makes it easy. Most entrees are $16+ (pretty average for Galena yet a bit steep), but once you take a bite into your food, you'll realize it's well worth the price. They have the BEST roasted chicken (poulet roti with frites) I've ever tasted. Garlic and butter take over your senses while you chomp on perfectly crunchy, shoestring frites. A hint, soak the endless complimentary bread in all the juices. If you're lucky, the cook may take a stop at your table for a brief visit. Love it! I'm still regretting not having dessert but I gotta leave something new for my next visit. Be sure to make a reservation on weekend evenings. If you have a good sized party you may even get the secret party room in the back like we did. Thanks to the owners of Farmer's Guest House (the best B&B in Galena!) for handing the old bar over to F&F to use in their restaurant. It fits perfectly!

Lovely from the outside- delicious on the inside. If you love a French Bistro menu this place will appeal to you. The sauerbraten and the schnitzel were fantastic as were the pâté and the desserts. The service was not great but it was friendly and prompt. A really nice meal that was a surprise amidst a lot of other standard run-of the mill menus on Main Street galena.

Great mussels and schnitzel . I had the pork schnitzel which was light and crispy. It was so large I will have a great sandwich with the rest.

I recently had lunch at Fritz and Frites with my parents. We decided to stop here because there was a very cool old car mint condition, sitting next to the restaurant. It was a Saturday afternoon and pretty busy. The decor is comfortable, nice, yet casual. White table clothes.. As with anything in Galena, casual dress is fine. I had a really yummy salmon sandwich with very thin cut fries.... the looked like onion straws. My sandwich was great. My dad had a fancy BLT that was also very good, and mom had the quiche of the day. (the owners wife makes the crust). She raved about it. I'm looking forward to heading back there, perhaps for dinner. If you're out in Galena, please don't fall into some of the tourist traps. This is a great little place at the end of Main street. They survived for probably 4-5 years which tells you they have a loyal following, its a tough restaurant market out there. P.S. The car belonged to the chef!

2 thumbs down. Do not go by the yelp rating, this place is a rippoff. Went there with my mum and son. Place was cold and empty, should have been a hint. My mum ordered the champagne mussels, 1/2 order and whilst sauce was good, the price per mussel turned out to be $1/mussel. Really! My son and I ordered steak frites, hard to go wrong right, wrong! The frites here are nothing like fries, picture a stack 5 inches high of fried shredded potatoes the diameter or spaghetti, consistency of straw and inedible. The steak, hamp, was burned on the outside, raw inside. A side of green beans for my son with a back taste, maybe bacon?! The waitress incompetent come to serve wine, ask if I want to taste it first, does not wait to hear the answer and serves my mum a full glass, defies the purposes of tasting right? So, 2 sodas, 2 burned steaks, 3 plates of straw inedible fries, not even a dozen mussels, two glasses of the the cheapest red wine, $86! So I called the owner to voice discontent, and seems shocked I do not like the "frites", offers no apologies or gestures of any kind! Lamentable! In french, means pitiful! On our way here we passed a bar restaurant called "poopy's" I should have listen to my son's request to eat there, at least the food would not have been as shitty as this place! Ps: yelp rating wont allow me to put zero star so one for me is zilch.

Yum! You'll need a reservation on the weekend! Perfect mix of German and French cuisine. Wine list extensive, choice of entrees gives plenty of options for everyone. Great service, great food! Ask for Nellie! We had a great time here - cost for two of us with 2 glasses wine each and dessert was $107. We would go back!

Not going to recommend this, especially if you are looking for good food. Service was great, ambiance nice, but food? Overall experience? Meh. Vegetarians, beware: kitchen not very creative or flexible. Went here for a girls night, based on reviews. Food served warm, not hot. Very expensive. Had Tuna Nicoise salad - they asked how I'd like the "sushi grade" tuna prepared. I said rare. It was quite obviously a frozen piece of tuna and it was very very tough. Yuck. Won't go again.

Plenty of reviews of this place so I dont' have too much to add... A unique concept (german and french food), super friendly service (honestly, a bit too friendly, we wouldn't have minded a bit less attention). We went for lunch, the menu has lots of variety and many dinner items are available in smaller lunch portions. The fries (well, frites) look amazing but I ordered before I saw them coming to the next table. I had a ham and greyere on rye and it was darn good, but I was hoping for thick-sliced ham off the bone and it was more lunchmeat-y. The wife had mussels in beer sauce and loved it. I'd say you should definitely give this place a try. We almost went back for dinner because a lot of the other restaurants in town didn't seem too appealing.

Perfectly situated at the top of Main Street in Galena, Fritz and Frites provided a much needed delicious meal after a long day of strolling and shopping in the cold. This place has the ambiance of a French cafe and the decor makes it extremely welcoming to all patron. Tables are spread out so you do not feel as though you are sitting on top of other guests. The food was delicious. Throughout the table we had ordered a combination of dishes that originated both in France and Germany. We ordered Mussels Mariniere although there are many sauces to choose from. All of the mussels dishes come with pomme frites which once you start eating are impossible to stop. The muscles, fries, escargots, and pate which were all part of the appetizers were all very tasty. I liked the pate which was chicken liver although I wish goose liver pate was an option since it was a part of one of the other dishes. My recommendation for dinner is definitely the Rindsrouladin which is braised beef filled with bacon onion and pickle. This is by far one of the most flavor packed dishes I have ever had in my life. Although the portion was somewhat small, the melodious combination of these ingredients with the beef made for a delightful experience. The heap of sauerkraut and schnitzel (first time I ever had it so I don't know how to judge) more than compensated for the lack of portion on the meat. For dinner most people ordered a variety of schnitzel (veal or pork) that they all seemed to enjoy. The one member of the group who ordered steak frites said the steak was a bit fatty. As a desert, we got everything. Chocolate cake, creme brulee, and a few others that I cannot even remember. The cake was a non-flour cake (all fudge) and ended up being the culmination of the start of my food coma. One other note is that our server was very friendly. He offered suggestions and even took a few group photos. Definitely give this place a try if you are in the area and looking for something different from the typical american meal.

One of the best meals I've had and certainly the best one I had in Galena. I had a pork medallion special served on gnocchi with a mushroom demi-glaze. The meat was cooked perfectly and the whole dish was just so good. When we complimented the waiter he actually brought the chef out to talk to us and we had fun chatting with him. Nice atmosphere and good food and service - what more can you ask for?

Wow. With all the 4 and 5 star reviews on here, I thought I'd be blown away. Wrong. I was in with a group of 10 women that dined here this past weekend. A majority of us in the group Yelp and we talked about how we might possibly need to set our expectations slightly lower because there's no way we would get Chicago quality food in Galena. Correct. We had a 7:00 reservation and they sat us right away. Five stars! Our waiter came out, greeted us and was friendly and helpful. Five stars! Then he says they're out of French onion soup. That's what I was going to order. BOO! Two stars. We start out with some group appetizers and soups. I tried their soup du jour which was described to me as a hearty mushroom. It was VERY salty... and for me, the Queen of Sprinkled Sodium, to say that... well, it's bad. Pate was good. I think. Not the biggest fan of pate in general though. Escargots were yum! Baked Brie was a little oily. Starters, three stars. Hot bread continually delivered to our table? An enthusiastic FOUR stars. The 40 minutes we had to wait between the time our starters were cleared until our entrees were brought to our table, one star. The fact that at first he brought the wrong table's food to us, one star. My breaded veal cutlet (the German name eludes me at this moment) I ordered was hot and crispy, definitely 4 stars. The fact that the kitchen forgot to send out the fried egg I ordered with it, and, once they did, sent out an egg that had a yolk fried HARD, one star. The spaetzel it's served with was chewy and tasteless, one star. One of my friends sent her meal back. She ordered the tuna salad and it smelled so incredibly fishy and was so clearly overcooked it was inedible. Free bite sized dessert for everyone at our table because they f-ed up our meal so much? Three stars. Let's average this baby out... I'm going to be generous and say three stars because our waiter tried his best and the atmosphere was cute. I really don't think I'd recommend this place to someone visiting the area but maybe we just caught them on a bad night? Regardless, I know I'll be back in Galena... but sadly, Fritz and Frites, I won't be back to visit you.

I'm hesitant to share my review because I don't want this place to be over run....but....it's simply amazing. We drive from down town Chicago to have a long day trip and a great meal at Fritz's!!! Feel like you're in Paris or the Louire Valley!!!! Food is great...environment awesome...people simply fun and cool.....avoid the tourists and hang w locals and foodies!!!!

Pretzel was very good but the schnitzel was one to remember. The red cabbage and spatzel were also very memorable.

Service was very polite and attentive. Started with a generous pour of wine and a great selection of unique beers for my husband. Then mussels in wine cream sauce which was good but mostly bland cream, more importantly to me, the actual mussels were a good size, tasted fresh and clean. Then I had the poulet roti and frites (roasted chicken and fries) both were delicious despite seeming to be a bland restaurant staple these were above par. The best part was the gravy on the plate that pooled up enough to dip the frites in-amazing! We were then gifted with a complimentary dessert, as Dave from the Stillman Inn (another great Galena establishment) had made our reservation and mentioned it was our one year wedding anniversary. We chose the warm apple strudel with vanilla ice cream which was easily the best I've ever had!

Went here based solely on yelp reviews - as usualy, happy with the results. Combination of French and German cooking, with a french sense to the decor, it was a pleasant meal. Music was perfect accompaniment, at a perfect volume, facilitating conversation while making other conversations impossible to hear - a nice level of friendly noise to enjoy dinner to. We arrived earlier (5:30) without a reservation - they were able to accomodate us - however things were filling in by the time we left, so I do recommend a reservation. I had a chicken special - it was rich and flavourful. Hubby had the schnitzel with red cabbage - was wonderful. The only issue we had: At the end of the meal, we handed over our credit card to pay the bill and it took the waiter 20 minutes to bring it back. (I admit: I was concernerned they had lost our card! Some explanation of the wait should really have been provided. It wasn't.) Other than that faux pas, service and our meal were wonderful. Would I return: Yes, but I'd make a reservation. Would I recommend: Yes.

This was our first time in Galena, and we came here for dinner. We easily got reservations for 6pm on a Saturday night. The French decor was effortlessly elegant, it felt like we were dining in a home. The wait staff was attentive, and we ordered the specials they offered: seafood chowder, French onion soup, and a dish with white beans, sausage, pork, and duck. The chowder was perfect! The meat and bean dish was very salty. We had just bought a couple bottles of wine down the street, and I was hoping this would be BYOB, but there was a $15 corkage fee :( Over all, we had a lovely dinner here.

went there with the wife and friends this past weekend. It was quite busy and a res is necessary. a small place, bistro like. Ordered the mussels which were tiny, overcooked and not fresh. the frites were soggy and looked like shoe strings. came with a so so aioli sauce. my wife got a piece of haddock which was tiny and served on 3 fingerling potatoes. for 19 bucks? i dont think so. I ordered the Tuna Nicoise salad which was ok, but the tuna was supposed to be sushi grade, but was not even close. ok selection of overpriced beer and wine. I will not go back.

Stopped by this place for lunch and had the cream of mushroom soup. It was just about the best soup ever. Had half a corned beef sandwich which was also very good. The atmosphere is OK...lacks a bit of warmth. But service was decent. Overall a very good experience...would want to check out a dinner before putting it over the top.

My husband and I ate dinner here a few nights ago and had a great experience. The place was busy but it was still intimate. Our server, Noah, and the host were excellent - both attentive and helpful. Our food - escargot, salad nicoise and tilapia provencal -was delicious. The whole French/German concept was quirky and fun. Great place for a different, special dinner.

Whenever I go out to dinner with my boyfriend and his parents we act like total restaurant critics. We can't help it! We just bring it out of each other... So, at Fritz and Frites, we couldn't help but comment on the over salted broth used in the stock for the mushroom soup, or the bland spaetzle, or the fatty steak. But the thing is, most of those things weren't items I ordered, and I really loved what I got! I got the rouladen, which was delish! And the red cabbage was just like red cabbage should be. Yes, the spaetzle left something to be desired, but when eaten with the gravy from the rouladen, it was pretty okay! I also like the ambience there...it's really quaint. Oh, and I'm pretty sure my boyfriend and his mom liked their schnitzels too! They make their own sauer kraut too and it has a unique flavor that I rather enjoyed. I didn't get a whole portion of it, because you have to decide between that and the red cabbage, but our waiter brought out a sample for us to taste, which I thought was reallly cool.

Five stars? People, please. Our drama with this restaurant started when we called for reservations. Apparently, they were booked solid for the three days we were in Galena. After some cajoling, however, the hostess admitted they had "some open slots" and made us reservations for an incredibly early 5:45. When we arrived at the restaurant (on time, as instructed), it was nearly empty. We were first seated at a table in the front of the restaurant, with a lovely street view. But after five minutes and initial beverage service, we were asked to move, because a group with reservations *an hour and a half after us* requested the table in the window. We were moved to the back by a family with two children who were finishing their dinner, to a decidedly less attractive table, crowded between two other tables of diners (the restaurant was, as noted, pretty much empty). After some grumbling, the family next to us joined in to our misery, noting that they, too, were moved and had trouble with the reservation-making "process" (the hostess). Determined to make the best of our experience, we ordered appetizers and mussels, which were good, but definitely not the five-star quality that other diners experienced. Unfortunately, though our food came quickly, we were pretty much forgotten about after the drink orders by our waiter - the same waiter who requested we be moved out of the front table. He never checked on us and never once stopped by our table while he doted on tables near the front. I have rarely been disappointed with service, but this was an entirely different animal. Simply to get our check, we had to stand up to wave the waiter over. And lets be clear here: the restaurant was *not busy.* I don't know what happened; maybe he just didn't like the way we looked. Or perhaps they were going for the "French Bistro" experience and he was trained to be snobby? At any rate, we left in something of a huff. And the table we were moved from? They never did show up.

Based on my dining experiences in Galena this place was outstanding. I have been there on two separate occasions and had a great experience both times. The first was a quiet dinner with my fiance and the second was a large family dinner the night before our wedding at Eagle Ridge. Each time the staff was very attentive and the owner/chef came out to check on our meal. I loved the personal touch. I can only comment on the hanger steak as I loved it so much I ordered it both times. It came with frites that were very good as well. We heard a lot of positive feedback from our family regarding their meals. Coming from Chicago we have our share of restaurants at our disposal. I am not comparing this place to some of the top restaurants in Chicago as we weren't in Galena for the culinary experience. If you are looking for a great place to have a nice dinner that isn't the standard run of the mill Italian this is for you.

Go here for the hostess, cocktails ambiance and weiner schnitzel! I have to say the most amazing aspect of our dinner at Fritz & Frites was the hostess/manager (whose name I sadly can't recall). Every once in a while you run into a restaurant owner/manager who MAKES your night. This was the case at Fritz & Frites. The hostess/manager was sweet, fun, accommodating, fabulously interesting, engaging and created our entire dinner experience with her friendly banter. I'd like to eat anywhere she is working. The cocktails were #1 on my list (the restaurant is NOT beer & wine only). The bartender researches vintage cocktails and recreates them deliciously. I had some concoction from heaven that included Crème Yvette, a lavender liquor. My friend had a beer and shot of something called Hog---- which was an extremely interesting and layered liqueur. My wiener schnitzel was very tasty and served with wonderfully sweet red cabbage and perfectly cooked spaetzle. All of the above was great and I would return to Fritz & Frites compared to other area restaurants, but I would not return if it were in Chicago. The escargot were boring. Cooked in just butter and diced garlic, they were screaming out for another layer of depth. The sauerbraten had a great sauce...but the meat!? Two sad, dry slices of roast beef. Not good! I truly enjoyed the atmosphere and décor of the restaurant. There are some odd modern pieces thrown in, but overall it gives you a French bistro feel, tho less crowded and dark. This is quite a cute place and worth a visit if you are in Galena. LOVE the hostess/manager!

Sorry, but the food was just NOT good. Service and ambiance are nice. Loud. Very expensive, even if the food was good (how much can sauerkraut and spaetzle ingredients cost hardly anything). Husband's "smoked pork chop" had the fake grill marks and tasted like it was frozen and processed - something you'd get from the freezer case in the grocery store. Spaetzle was totally bland. Food came out warm but not hot. People having steak next to us loved their meal, but we just didn't feel like anything on our plates was fresh! They get an extra star because, for the first time ever, my husband returned his meal to the kitchen - they were nice about it and didn't charge for the meal.

My husband and I went here on a weekend getaway. The food was very flavorful and delicious! We started out with baked brie, although it doesn't seem like a large portion, it is perfect for the size of bread and was very good! He got the rindsrouladin and I got the Friess salad and wild mushroom soup. The soup was delicious, probably something I will crave in the future. We finished with apple strudel and cinnamon ice cream, wonderful!!

Great restaurant in Galena. My birthday trip to Los Angeles fell through due to work obligations, but we still wanted to get out of Chicago, so we packed a bag and hopped in the car. We decided upon Fritz and Frites based on Yelp reviews, and I am glad that we did. We had no trouble making reservations and we were seated at a table in front of the window. I informed the server that I would be ordering the Weiner Schnitzel and he recommended a German pinot noir, which paired with my meal perfectly. (Kudos to him for the great recommendation, but not to me for forgetting the specific wine.) And the Weiner Schnitzel with red cabbage!! So good!! Delicious!! I even took my leftovers back to the hotel with me, which I ordinarily never do, and I ate them later that evening. With my hands. (I may have been a little drunk; don't judge. And there was no silverware in the hotel room.) The service was great - attentive without being overbearing - and we ran into our server later that evening at one of the bars and he took us around to some local pubs and bought me a drink for my birthday. Now how's that for service? This restaurant has a lot of charm and well worth it if you're in Galena.

Where do I start? They tried! They tried very hard! I give them a three because I really want to like them more and under normal circumstances, I think we would. Please read all of this review! We had reservations for our mini-moon weekend and this was our second night there. Our reservations were at 8pm and we showed up at 7:40pm; they were really nice and seated us right away... but then forgot about us. The hostess came over and when she realized we had still been without service she apologized and after she heard that we were going to order champagne, she offered to buy us a split of champagne, which we thanked her for, but it was kinda' bad. We ordered our appetizer which came out quickly and had placed our order for our entrees. We had asked to see the prices for the champagne but it took about 10 min or so before they could get that for us. After a solid 15 - 20 minutes after we finished our appetizer we were looking around kind of wondering where our entrees were when our server came over and apologized then came back 5 min later with complimentary salads. About another 10 min or so after that, we finally received our entrees. Now this is what I will say... I think this was the perfect storm for them! They were busy, we were early and I think something was messed up in the kitchen that they just didn't tell us, which is what delayed the entrees. The food was good! The service was good, just slow. The problem in all of this, is that we were given salads that we didn't really want or need because we had already eaten so much but they were making an effort to apologize; we appreciated that! The dessert was wonderful! All sorts of chocolaty goodness! The mussels, in quality, were good; in taste, it turns out my husband doesn't like fennel. :) But I liked it! We would totally go back if we visit Galena again (we live in Chicago) and I would totally recommend that you check them out! Like I said, I think under normal circumstances, it would be better but I cannot give them more stars on this visit.

Hands down the best food we ate in Galena and an overall wonderful experience. Great romantic ambiance, knowledgeable wait staff and top notch food. I only wish we found it earlier so we could have avoided all the other duds on main street! If anyone is planning a trip to Galena this is the only restaurant you need to go to!

Caveat: This is my first experience to dine at a German Restaurant, so I"m hesitant to give "5" without having something to compare. The four stars in no way means less than fully satisfied. Review: My wife and I ate here during a recent get-away-trip to Galena. This restaurant was one of the highlights. The food was delicious, service was excellent, and the place was cozy and intimate. I wanted to go back, but we had to leave town. The prices are not cheap for dinner entrees, but I suppose you get what you pay for..........in this case a quality tasting dish. If your experience is as good as ours, you will leave this place wishing they had this restaurant in your hometown!

Excellent food and atmosphere! It is like being in another country...feel like you are on vacation. If you have a large party, they have a great little private room in the back. Amazing frites!

The restaurant boldly combines two fairly different cuisines (surprisingly different given that Germany and France share a border). I went with some friends earlier this year and we had escargot and mussels as appetizers, and I went with the schnitzel, because for me, schnitzel is not so much a food as it is a way of life. The appetizers were delicious, though it admittedly was my first time trying escargot. The appetizers also came with some fresh bread that was pretty much amazing. The schnitzel was fantastic, and portions were generous. It was served with Spaetzle, another German favorite of mine. I was admittedly underwhelmed by the Spaetzle, because it lacked any topping or flavor. Perhaps some cheese sprinkled on or a sauce may have helped. I also wouldn't have complained had they served pommes as the side dish. I saw others with big plates of them and it looked delicious.

Friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff, spectacular poulet rôti, very reasonable, authentic European atmosphere. What more could you ask for? (Note: I returned for a second visit about a week later, and had an even better experience than the first time. My sister agreed that the poulet rôti was the best chicken she's ever eaten, the chef stopped by our table for a very pleasant conversation -- and sent us out a slab of apple strudel with his compliments to round off our meal.)

Fritz and Frites is located on the northern-most end of Main Street in Galena - so far north that you'll think you've left the businesses behind (tip: look for the pretzel!). My wife and I went based on other recommendations on Yelp, although I admit I was leery based on Jolene H's review. Thankfully, our experience was nothing like hers. Service was friendly and prompt, and the owner or chef (not sure which) even came out at one point to chat with the diners. Perhaps the biggest selling point is the menu, an unusual combination of French and German cuisine. It's not extensive - there were three German entrees, including wienerschnitzel and rouladen. My wife ordered the latter, which was delicious - a thinly sliced beef roll filled with bacon, onions and pickles. It came with red cabbage and spaetzle, also perfectly done. I ordered salmon with loganberry and green beans. We elected to skip the liver appetizer! The only drawback - salads must be ordered separately. We both ordered caesar, which were very good and not skimpy at all. The place has its quirks. There's no printed wine list, so I literally had to walk up to a dry erase board to read the options (the bottles are also lined up on a wall). Same with the beer. I was disappointed that they didn't have any German stout, but they mentioned that this was temporary. The dining area is cozy, about 15 tables, but we never felt like we were sitting on top of someone else. The decor doesn't create your traditional romantic ambiance, but the quality of the service and the attention to detail more than made up for the lack of candles. Another plus: the menu is reasonably priced (entrees priced around $15). Bottom line: a great place to go if you're looking for an elegant dining experience off the beaten path in Galena. We will be going back again.

Awesome variety of mussels which I think is fun. I really liked the champagne mussels. Price is reasonable for a high end dinner. My husband loves German food and the schnitzel was excellent and not too heavy. He thought it was the most authentic schnitzel he has had outside of Germany.

Really cute restaurant away from the touristy section of Galena. Both my husband and I had tasty meals...quiche and steak salad.

  • L. P.

Excellent restaurant in general, discreet service, quiet, no blaring music, and an unusually reasonably priced wine list (with French wines, and not only the usual crudely over-oaked California plonk). The hanger steak was done just right, not overcooked. A couple of small suggestions: we requested mayonnaise with our frites, and got -- bottled Hellman's. It's not hard to make real mayonnaise, and their frites deserve better than the tasteless bottled form. The creme brulee was a tad overcooked, with a texture more like a flan (creme caramel) than creme brulee, but good flavor. These are fine-tunings. Still the best place to eat for many, many miles around.

I had the roasted chicken. It was the best roasted chicken I have ever had in my life. Please taste this chicken. Everything is wonderful. Don't miss it!

  • Daniel H.

The beer selection is pretty amazing alone. The wine list was long as well, though I didn't order any. The food is quite good, I think the best I had in Galena. The roast chicken was excellent, and I'm saying this about something as trite as roasted chicken. The baked brie is also quite good, though our server neglected to warn us that the container would be hot so I almost singed off my finger prints... The only outlier was the french onion soup, which was much more sweet than savory. However, even that was still edible. All in all, it was great. I would go to this restaurant even in Chicago.

Best place in Galena! We eat here once a week and service and food are excellent every time. They have a great brunch menu as well. The champagne and cream mussels are life changing. If you are looking for great food and great drinks in a charming atmosphere this is the place.

What happened?? I came here two years ago and had one of the best meals ever. This time the rounsladen (sp?) was dry and not a trace of bacon flavor despite bacon listed as an ingredient, The frites were tres greasy, the tilapia tasted a little bleach-y, my husband said the schnitzel was okay, not great. Even the creme-brulee... hardly any flavor to the creme. Flourless cake was pretty good. The profiteroles were very good. The last meal we had there was off the chain. I dunno... was it the chef's night off?

Yelp categorizes this as French, but I'd say it's more German than French. The service was warm and friendly. The waiter didn't know much about the beer they carry, but it turned out okay. The rindsrouladen was pretty good. The atmosphere was great, I could trick myself into thinking I was in Europe for an hour. Being an urban girl, it's nice to come to visit my parents and get food that steps it up to city standards.

Hands down one of if not the best restaurants in Galena. The owners are genuine and friendly. I have dined there for lunch and even with large parties in the evening, the food and service is always consistently excellent. Their prices seem reasonable for the overall experience and quality. If you enjoy French or German food Fritz and Frites will not disappoint.

Terrific weiner schnitzel! Also outstanding selection of bottled European imported beers. The waiter was very knowledgeable and able to make recommendations that met our needs. Very cute decor - at the end of the main drag so you don't feel claustrophobic. Also - great flourless chocolate cake! Very reasonable prices. Give them a try - you won't be disappointed.

Great wait staff and chef, i have eaten here many times and still like it, I but i usually have to get through the local racists stares and the tourist stares that are surprised people of color have money to buy food at a nice restaurant, ha, if they didn't have great food i sure wouldn't be there.

This was one of the first places I went when I first visited Galena. I love German food more than most people love their husbands and/or wives so I was excited. This place did not disappoint. The staff was very friendly and fun to talk to taking their time to explain all the different dishes, offer recommendations, and even help pick out a rather obscure and dark beer to go with the meal. The price was a bit more than I was hoping for but it was definitely worth it. The restaurant itself is very cozy without being cramped. I definitely hit this place any time I'm feeling the need for some spaetzle.

Recommended by one of the locals my wife and I stopped in. We were greeted by a friendly young lady who seated us. Decide we were in a German restaurant so we ask for a recommendation for a good German beer. They brought out to excellent dark beers. We had one of the luncheon special which was Ham and Gruyere on a pretzel roll which was excellent. All through our lunch the server was very attentive. We walked away with lunch for at a place that had an excellent atmosphere for under $30.00. Well worth the trip and worth the walk..

Step inside and feel like you are in a Marlena Dietrich movie. The food is great. I have been here both in 2009 & again in 2010. The German food is great and makes you want to yodel, but have not tried the French food yet.

This place is incredibly unique! I stopped in for dinner last Thursday with my boyfriend and the place was considerably empty (although as I previously mentioned, it was Thursday night). The servers were very attentive and kind and the atmosphere appeared to be fairly relaxed although the restaurant was a bit more formal than I expected it to be. I ordered the wiener schnitzel and it was outstanding! I never really had wiener schnitzel before as there aren't too many places in the Chicago area that serve German food, but this was very delicious. The portions were ENORMOUS and incredibly fairly priced for the food that you receive on your plate. I would definitely come here again next time I'm in Galena!

Very good meal. My wife and I had a great first meal on our first visit to Galena. The baked brie was well prepared. The mussels had good flavor, just too much broth(I was a little confused by the spelling of The Mussel dish. On the menu it is spell as Mussels Mariniere Yet it as described as Mussels Meuniere). I ordered the schnitzel, nice job. Especially good with two eggs on top. My wife ordered the braised beef roll, loved it. The flour-less black forest chocolate cake was very good. If it was served room temp it would have been great! . The wine a French Malbec, awesome!

I went for lunch with 6 adults. All 6 meals were delish, savory, and enjoyed by all! No leftovers on anyone's plate b/c it tasted so good. We all left feeling completely satisfied and ready to go back the next day!! I'm just sorry I didn't come across this place sooner during previous trips to Galena, but it'll certainly be a staple for all return visits.

Staff here is all very nice. Beer selection is great (a list would be nice!) The food has been hit or miss, but never bad in my opinion. They have some things to eat here that I have never tried in my life which is nice. I'm not a fan of the sterile ambiance, especially if the place isn't full. Its a little boring. The good far outweighs the bad here though. I would put this on a short list of places that I would eat on my first night in Galena.

I am going to rave about this restaurant. I loved the interior: elegant cafe. They have four different types of mussels! Four! We had the mussels marinare and they were excellent. I will have to go back at least three more times. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, too. We had the soup. My wife raved about the onion soup, and I had the tomato, which was very good. We also had Caesar salads. They were perfect. And finally we shared Steak Frites. The fries were skinny and tasty. The steak was a perfect ribeye. I will always go to Fritz and Frites when I am in Galena.

We had a wonderful lunch in this extremely cute and friendly european bistro. The service was friendly and informative. The food was delicious. We enjoyed lunch with our two teens who devoured the pomme frittes (with us) which do not come with ketchup which makes the place feel very authentic. Entrees were equally good as were the desserts. I will definitely go back there next time we vacation in Galena.

The food here is simply amazing. A friend took me here the other night while I was visiting Dubuque, and the Chicken dish was so good you would just close your eyes and bask in the deliciousness. Seriously, give it a try! Service could have been a little better, and no draft beers. Definitely worth the drive from Chicago!

We chose this place from reading the other reviews on this site. We agree with David M. that is the best food we ever ate in Galena. It was a great experience. Our server was very knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. The escargot and liver pate appetizers were excellent. The roasted chicken was the best chicken I ever ate anywhere. The pork schnitzel was also outstanding. Try the french beer. It was very light and bubbly, almost like champagne. We loved this place and it wasn't hard on the wallet either.

I've passed by this restaurant along Main St. and probably wouldn't have ever gone in to try it on my own. I read some of these reviews on here and since all of them are positive, I couldn't resist. I took my husband here for dinner on his birthday. Being from Chicago, our palettes tend to be a little more overly critical...After reading the reviews, I immediately suggested to my husband that he order their Roasted Chicken and since I've lived in Paris I ordered the Steak Frites. For starters we ordered the Spinach Salad and the Baked French Onion soup. The "warm bacon dressing" on the Spinach Salad was cold and was very sweet. What I love about Baked French Onion Soup is the melted cheese crust along the rim of the bowl...not at this place. The soup was ladled 3/4 of the way and there was a thin 3-inch wide in diameter piece of cheese....lastly, the soup was LUKEWARM. Ugh, not a good way to start dinner. Our meal then arrived and what I noticed immediately is that each of our plates were completely covered with thinly julienned deep fried potatoes...defined as "frites". My husband thoroughly enjoyed the chicken and even I thought it was expertly seasoned and well prepared. My steak was a different story...half of the steak was pure FAT. Ugh! Also, the frites were totally unseasoned. Even though the chicken was good, not worth $17.95. My steak dish was $16.95..definitely not worth it. Finally, since it was my husband's birthday I ordered their warm apple strudel. Even though they serve it with vanilla bean ice cream, I opted for their homemade cinnamon ice cream that was served with another one of their desserts. Hands down, the dessert was the best part of this incredibly mediocre meal. Lastly, although the meal was so-so the service was good...sometimes over the top, but better than most in the area. Don't think I'll be back even though we would have liked to try their German fare.

This is a small marvel of a restaurant. It starts with the simple but tasteful decor which evokes comfort with a touch of very low key sophistication. The selection of wines and beers is excellent and there are abundant choices for both the casual drinker and a more demanding one. I especially liked the variety offered by the glass. The service was attentive withut being obtrusive. They take pride in this restaurant and it is reflected in the service they provide. The food choices focus on the classics of Bistro fare both Germand and French. The pate is wonderful. The schnitzel is crisp yet not overcooked, the frites are very good as well, but note these are not American fries, they are closer to what you get in Europe, thinly cut shoestring potatoes. THey also served very authentic sauerkraut, in fact the best I've had in a very long time. The food is prepared with obvious skill and attention to detail. This is a chef who knows what he is doing and enjoys his craft. My wife and I shared an order of profiteroles for dessert and they were perfect. Crisp shells stuffed with ice cream with a proper bittersweet chocolate sauce. This ranks with the best Galena has to offer. To top this off, it is very reasonably priced compared to the restaurants that seem to cater to the fat wallets of Chicagoans visiting Galena. Finally, The location, at the end of Main Street makes it easy to find street parking. When in Galena you should go here. This will be a regular spot for us when whenever we are in town.

I believe that this is going to be my only review in which I give zero stars to any business. (I tried to give zero but Yelp somehow disallows it?) I was in Galena for the Memorial Day weekend and was looking for a cozy place for dinner. Fritz and Frites looked so warm and inviting from the outside, like a lil' European bistro, as opposed to the huge bustling crowds at Fried Green Tomatoes. So we stepped in. And the moment we did so, everything changed. First no one said hello, or welcomed us. Then I made a move to sit at a corner table. But a server busy cleaning a table said gruffly: " You can't sit there, I haven't cleaned it yet. Sit elsewhere." Obediently we shuffled to a another table. And waited. Then the manager hastily cleared the extra placings and handed us the menus. I saw him ask another server to come to us. We waited. She strolled over and asked if we wanted wine. I asked for the wine list. She pointed at a little chalkboard on the wall, where the wines they had were scribbled so faintly I had trouble reading. I took some time to decide and she stared at me in obvious impatience. When I asked her to read a word I couldn't see, she did so with reluctance. When she came with the wines, the first thing she said was "We are out of beef." (I was disappointed because that was what I wanted to eat) The other items on the limited menu (They had a choice of TWO soups and FIVE mains) were pate (which I didn't eat) and veal (which I am against eating). But the main thing was, we grew increasingly uncomfortable because we felt that we weren't welcome. In that tiny restaurant, warmth was somehow lacking. Our waiter came back, and when I ask her what she recommended, she didn't meet my eye. I was basically spoken to with her nose up at me. By this time my partner got really pissed off at the service we were getting. The other tables seemed fine. The chef came out and said hello to every table except ours. The restaurant was only half-filled so it wasn't a case of under-staffing. The manager never did even smile at us. So my partner decided to leave. I protested at first, because I don't like public scenes. But he insisted. When the waiter asked why, we told her. But she didn't really seem sorry. And the manager charged us the full price of our wines despite our clear and loud complaints about the service. Now, I'm not sure if it was because we were Asian (there are very few Asian tourists in Galena), but since this is a food review and not a debate about racial relations, I'm not going to elaborate. Suffice to say we are never going back, and would not recommend this place even to our enemies.

New to Galena. This is a little bistro offering French & German cuisine. Pate & cheese, Soft German Pretzel, Wiener Schnitzel, or Coq Au Vin. Yes, it is unusual!! Also, a great selection of wines & beers for a small restaurant. And on Saturdays, they have an accordion player. Again a little unusual but what a pleasant change from the ordinary!!! It was very relaxing. Take a break from shopping on Galena's Main Street and come in for an appetizer and good wine and beer and relax to the sound of accordion music. The prices are reasonable and the food is very good. Excellent service. "A little French . . . A little German . . . A Little Bistro!!

Basically, just a totally great dinner and evening. Robert was our waiter, and was super cool. Prices are completely fair. The food was great (the woman next to us was losing her shit over some mussels she ordered and telling everyone she didn't know about it). We're definitely going back next time we make it out there. Also want to try their brunch.

My wife and I stopped in for lunch today, while visiting Galena. My wife ordered the quiche of the day, a Quiche Lorraine. The crust was flaky and buttery and the filling was excellent. The salad that came with it had a very good vinaigrette. I wanted to try the "frites" from the namesake, accompanied by a grilled ham and swiss on a pretzel roll. The latter was pretty much a croque monsieur on a pretzel roll. The mound of "frites" that came with it were authentic, just like the ones I was used to back in the day when I was living in Paris. The frites were accompanied with a homemade aioli, just as they should be. I finished with a good espresso, a nice compliment. We need to return for dinner soon.

Had reservations on a recent Saturday night and were seated immediately. The place has a French bistro vibe and it was very comfortable and inviting. Service was outstanding. Our waiter was attentive without being too pushy and gave us some helpful recommendations. The wife had a nice glass of Riesling and I had a few very good beers throughout the meal. Although there is no beer on tap, they have a couple dozen interesting imports in bottles and cans. We started with a full order of mussels in white wine and garlic which were fantastic. I also ordered a spinach salad with warm bacon dressing which was the best that I've ever had (and this from a guy that dines out on German food every other week). For entrees my wife had the nicoise salad with seared tuna and a wonderful dressing. I ordered the beef rouladen which was prepared perfectly with sides of spaetzle and red cabbage. For dessert we split a prune and ice cream dish which was very good. All in all a great night out and we would definitely return when in Galena again.

Ah, I love this place! A bit of Europe in downtown Galena. The atmosphere is homey, cozy and full on French Bistro. If you are looking for light fare, with a bit of class and house wine this is your place. The quality of ingredients and home style technique dictate the menu. You will find German beer and French wine, don't expect Budweiser or Pepsi cans. This isn't bar food, it's classic French inspire/German touched cuisine that could be considered a bit fussy, but is in every way a glimpse of a slow paced meal with a touch of class! I recommend the quiche and salad, house wine, a some time to people watch and enjoy the ambiance.

My spouse and I stopped here for late lunch one Friday afternoon during a weekend at Eagle Ridge. Yelp reviews sent us here and I'm glad I checked first! What a cute little spot with a funny little menu. After two German beers from a massive inventory available, we ordered the (frites) cheese plate, (fritz) the bratwurst with sauerkraut, a side of red cabbage and the liverwurst sandwich. Everything was tasty, refined and extremely high quality. I must say that this place is NOT KID FRIENDLY; our six-month old got a few side eye glances from the hostess and servers, despite our very quick lunch. Despite that, loved this little spot. Cheers!

An absolute must enjoy in Galena if you enjoy German food. Nice French wine list as well. My wife is German and a big smile came over face as she first tasted her schnitzel. Roulades better than motherin law used to make. Wasn't open on Sunday. Very happy we waited until Tuesday morning to try it out. Little pricey but well worth it.

Supremely disappointed. My family and I were very excited to eat at this restaurant, but were turned away without the opportunity to be seated. It looked busy, but there definitely appeared to be room for our party of 5. We noticed a party of 2 sitting at a table for 6, and the hostess went out of her way to move tables for the party of 3 seated just before us. When she asked how many in our party, my sister told her 5, and the hostess's only response was, "I can't do 5." Rather than the hostess volunteering a timeframe to which we could be seated, my sister had to ask for one, and the hostess hesitated; we left before she could even pretend to give us an answer. Based on a previous review, this isn't the first time this has happened at this restaurant, and I hope something is done to ensure this is the last.

This place was a shame. We went in and it took a long time before someone even asked us about seating. It wasn't even busy. I said we had a table of 5 and she said "I can't do five." And that was it. I stared at her because I was so appalled and confused by her statement and treatment. I then said "Well ... How long will that be?" She said she just seated a TWO person party at a table for 6 so it's however long they take. There was FOUR TWO PEOPLE TABLES OPEN, and two four people tables. Why would you sit them there?! NO HOSPITALITY, nothing. No offering to try and put tables together, seemed to have no interest in wanting us there. Very disappointing, very rude. Go somewhere else that will appreciate you better!

Classy white table cloth restaurant with great ambiance. Had a French dinner and a German dessert. What a neat menu! Loved my super fresh, clean tasting tuna nicoise. Everything was perfectly cooked. Son thought his Steak Frites was great! Husbo loved his German braised beef. One in our party had the same thing and said it was the best thing he had ever tasted! Wow! The German chocolate cake was soooo big. A "bail of hay" in comparison to the micro scoop of ice cream that accompanies. The cake was dark, moist and de-lish! The apple strudel with cinnamon ice cream was also a hit. What made the night even more memorable than the neat menu was our server. He was a blond pony tailed "surfer" in speech, mannerisms and looks. Stuck out like a sore thumb in this sophisticated environment, but he was super friendly, calm and patient with our large group, which we appreciated as we were a little on the loud side. He did seem new to serving though as he didn't clear any of our dishes until we started stacking them on the end of the table.

Friday Night: Appeared to be under staffed and was obvious. Had to ask for water refill each time. Not terribly observant. App: Brie - we will pass next time on this. Main dish for the Mr: Hanger Steak with Pomme Frites. He cleaned his plate and had a great satisfied grin. Main dish for me: Spinach salad with warm bacon vinaigrette and side of spaetzel. Salad was tasty but could have used something a little more to make an impression. Very simple, but tasty. The spaetzel was good. Wish it was pan fried just a tad with fresh chopped parsley (like gma makes it). Obviously a personal preference. Beverages: him: a Porter beer with high alcohol content (The Lobster Beer). He enjoyed! Total bill w/ tip: $68 Overall, I enjoy their lunch menu better. Get the mushroom cream soup too if available.

Wed afternoon: Party of 5. Great service. Apps: Escargot & Charcuterie. Both very good. Main Dishes: Rinsrouladen, Sauerbraten, and Schweine Schnitzel. All fantastic. Good portions. Red cabbage is fantastic. Dessert: Profiterol. Perfectly sized for a sweet after dinner treat. Will definitely come back.

Unfortunately did not get a chance to try out their food as I was apart of a larger party that was turned away right at the door. This restaurant displayed very unmidwestern hospitality by not even trying to accommodate our larger party. I know in future I will not even try to eat at this restaurant as it seems if you have a party larger than 2, chances are you will be turned away at the door.

My wife and I had an absolutely incredible experience here. Excellent food, excellent service. This was one of the few places I've visited anywhere that I feel deserves a 5 star rating. We were there for dinner. I had ordered the onion soup au gratin and my wife got the escargots de bourgogne for our appetizers. I LOVED the soup. This was not your Americanized "french onion soup". This was the way it's supposed to be done. And while I did not have any, my wife thoroughly loved every bite of her snails. For our main meals, I ordered Rindsrouladen and my wife got the tuna niçoise salad. I've had variations of Rindsrouladen in other places, but this was done with the traditional method of the whole pickle surrounded by a beef roll. Absolutely melt in your mouth. And speatzle was the perfect accompaniment. As for my wife's salad, she said it was the best tuna she's ever had. Overall, an excellent dining experience. We will be back!

A perfect meal. Tre` bien. I had the chicken pâté with pistachios to start and it was superb. For my main course I had the special- a chicken schnitzel with the home made sauerkraut and Spaetzle. Chicken was so thin and tender I am in heaven. Kraut was perfectly made. Spaetzle has been covered elsewhere and is ok. I can't wait to come back and try other dishes and some wine

Lovely decor but nothing tasted good. the dressing was more Kraft than a vinaigrette. The turkey sandwich seemed like a Costco pretzel bun with Oscar Mayer turkey, not bad but not worth going out for ... And certainly not French nor was it yummy.

I CAN NOT WAIT To go back!! Personally, I think this concept TOTALLY works! It's not exactly some weird stretch of the imagination that 2 European food concepts can work together ! We shared the pork schnitzel with red cabbage and spatezle, along with the mussels with champagne sauce, pom frites, all delicious! Don't let this menu "scare" you away or intimidate you" it's not a fussy restaurant or menu imho at all. It's simple classic dishes executed perfectly!! I'm still thinking about this meal!! The decor is understated and clean bistro y' if anything, and the service was both friendly and knowledgeable! There's nothing snobby about this place. So there's a tablecloth, big deal. And for those of your worried about portion size.. don't be. You will not walk out of here hungry or breaking the bank. They are spot on with menu concept pricing, flavor everything here!

  • Jay B.

Wow. Am I the only one that sees a problem with the concept and execution of this restaurant? As a professional chef, I was intrigued by the concept and my wife and I, on our last trip to Galena, decided to try Fritz and Fites. What we got was an experience that was so astoundingly bad that we will surly be talking about it for years. Now the service was fine but the food, like the concept, is wrong wrong wrong. We started out ok with what I thought was a passable charcuterie plate. This was due to the fact that most of what was on it was not done in house so they at least got some good stuff for that. From there it was way down hill. Wife's Onion Soup had huge needles of rosemary in it. Not only is this a choking hazard but I have NEVER seen anyone use rosemary in French Onion Soup. Shnitzel was greasy. Nuff said. Worst offense, the cassoulet was STONE COLD. Not tepid, not luke warm, STONE COLD. Not only is this thoroughly unappetizing, it is also seriously dangerous as poorly held cooked beans is a cause for food poisoning. OK, so, some people might like this but I can tell you, steer clear of this place, It doesn't work on a lot of levels.

  • JM C.

Definitely the best place in town. The food was fantastic - more like we're used to in Chicago - and the service was terrific. Had several dishes and we loved all of them. Great selection of wines and beers as well. Most places in Galena charge city prices for food that isn't good. This place delivers on all counts!

  • Simian S.

We gave this restaurant a try last night (a Saturday night) based on the positive reviews on Yelp and we were not impressed. The restaurant itself has a nice little French bistro feel...until you take a closer look around. We were seated at a table by the window and noticed that the window sill was covered with dead bugs and the front window had clearly not been washed in quite some time, so we were looking out through a haze of grime. We ordered the baked Brie as an appetizer and found it to be a complete disappointment on many levels. First of all, it was a TINY portion- as on ONE small wedge of brie and two small apple slices. There were supposedly leeks in it as well (according to the menu) but I didn't see (or taste) any in ours. Secondly, it tasted absolutely disgusting (husband referred to it as "bile"). It was baked in brandy (which we normally like) but the brandy completely obscured the taste of the brie. When our server came to ask how we liked it, my husband very politely mentioned that we just didn't care for it. The server then said "have you ever HAD brie before?" in a really pretentious tone. I answered yes, I have in fact had baked brie many times and in fact make it at home on occasion. She responded "well Calvados is BRANDY, you know, so if you don't like brandy, you won't like this." (We're from Wisconsin, of course we like brandy). So right from the start we were put off by the attitude of the server, who talked down to us and treated us like we aren't qualified enough to dislike the horrible brie. Maybe this was supposed to be part of the French experience? For the main course, I had the salmon and my husband had the tilapia. The salmon came with a lingonberry sauce and a huge pile of green beans. The salmon was extremely dry and overcooked and the sauce was good, but there was very little of it (had there been more, it could have at least added some much needed moisture to the fish). The beans were not seasoned at all and were bland. The tilapia was also dry and overcooked, and my husband said the sauce tasted burned- like it had been scraped off the bottom of a pan. Given the poor quality of the food, we opted not to have dessert and left pretty quickly. We will definitely not be back. UPDATE: When the owner of the bed and breakfast where we are staying heard of our experience at Fitz and Frites, she was bothered enough that she contacted the owner to let him know, and he apologized profusely and sent us a lovely bottle of champagne as an apology. So while we didn't have a great interaction with our server, we have to say that the owner is a class act. While it wasn't such a big deal to us that we weren't fans of the food (it happens, sometimes you order something and just don't care for it, not a big deal), we were most upset with the reaction of our server, and the owner went a long way to make up for that, which we greatly appreciate.

Absolute favorite place to eat in Galena. We have NEVER ordered something and been disappointed. The atmosphere is as wonderful as the food too, just like being in a quaint French bistro. Who would've thought such a jem would be found in a small town like Galena!

Every time my husband and I go to Galena we always stop here! We order their Sauerbraten with rotkohl and späztle as well as the schweine schnitzle with sauerkraut. FABULOUS. They are pricey, but the food is perfect. Great selection of beers.

Get ready for some nose up, pinky out dining people!!!! Ok, maybe not....but French cuisine is supposed to be snooty, right? Given France and Germany's history with each other, you wouldn't think these two type of food would get along, but they do. Walking in to the place I was a little worried, because neither type of cuisine sound tasty to me but wow was I wrong! I didn't catch the ambience of either a French or German restaurant. The place seemed rather nondescript actually, but the food was not. The missus and I started off with escargot so we could seem sophisticated. The meat itself wasn't slimy like I was expecting, but it was way too salty for me. She only had it once before and thought it was salty too, plus, I grossed her out a little when I noted they still had their antenna on. I don't know if the saltiness was from the seasoning or that's just the way they are but if you're an expert you know (so tell me) I had the sauerbraten, which is beef in a balsamic/white wine sauce. To me, it was the perfect dish, and the best thing I've eaten in a while. The beef was tender yet firm when you cut it, and the sauce was simply magnificent....truly wonderful. With every bite you somehow could taste the balsamic on the front and the wine on the back. I doubt theres anywhere I will taste a sauce that good other than there. It came with spaetzle, which was a little heavier and "potato-y" than Im used to but it was good and I'm pretty sure my American was showing. The sauerkraut was extremely sour and so to my liking but maybe not to everyones. The missus had the Wiener Schnitzel. I ate about half or hers as well as 2/3's of my own. It wasn't as good as my dish but it was excellent as well. She had red cabbage instead of sauerkraut. She didn't like my sauerkraut for the above reason but that's ok...you could cover red cabbage in fairy dust and hundred dollar bills and I'm still not going to like it. The only misstep of the dinner was dessert. That was a total and complete disaster. We had an apple strudel with caramel and ice cream. The caramel completely burned to the bottom of the strudel leaving it tasting sticky, chewy and burnt. The pastry was dense and even in the middle I tasted no apple at all/. Stay away from that. Our server was very friendly and engaging. Except for the dessert, a wonderful dinner. The missus thinks its a 4 star place but to me the sauerbraten made this a 5 star place all day long!

Pleasant surprise in Galena. Best schnitzel I've had in recent memory, massive beer selection (bottled only though), and a few good vegetarian options for my wife, which was tough to find in town. Spoetzl was a little mushy and the service felt a little rushed or this would have gotten a five.

The staff was knowledgable and very nice. The food was amazing!!! The mussels in the champagne sauce was a definite favorite for all, even the ones that don't like seafood. The Huhner schnitzel was amazing, as well as the casserole with duck and some kind of sausage. Really everything was delicious.

He started the first TGI Friday restaurant in New York in the hope of meeting single women as there weren't any such public place for young men and women to meet. He invested $5000 on his own and borrowed another $5000 from his mother to buy a bar named The Good Tavern and renamed the premise to Thank God It's Friday, inspired from an expression during his time at Bucknell University.
