My husband and I just returned home from celebrating out 1st wedding anniversary at Cloran Mansion in Galena, IL. Cheryl & Carmine welcomed us into their beautiful B&B. We stayed in the Tower Room and the room was simply beautiful. The tower is where the two person whirlpool tub is located for the Tower Room. The stairs a bit steep and close, but using the tub was so relaxing for us, that it was worth it! All the rooms have a whirlpool tub, so don't let the stairs stop you. We awoke to one of the best breakfast I have ever had! When my husband and I came back to our room after spending several hours touring Galena, we were greeted to an anniversary card and cookies left in our room for us. We paid a bit extra to have the special "Birthday/Anniversary dinner". We had an outstanding anniversary dinner in the dining room, all to ourselves. All in all, we had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back again!

This wasn't quite as "out in the middle of nowhere" we thought it was, but as B&Bs go, it was lovely. Carmine and Cheryl are so sweet and understanding, it's easy to feel at home. The breakfasts are huge, the towels are soft and fluffy, the whirlpools are fun, we got a king-sized bed (!), and the overall atmosphere is simple and relaxed. We enjoyed our stay. The only downside we found was staying in the Tower Room, after reading the description, we thought there would be windows to look at the view. It's sunny, but the windows are too high to look out of. (This was definitely our assumption, though. In reviewing the description, it doesn't say "view" anywhere.) We really liked our couples' massage, as well. Cheryl & Carmine obviously don't do that, but they've contracted with two wonderful masseuses. Great job!

Last summer by boyfriend and I stayed here in the cabin room for 4 nights with our dog. Let me just say everything about our stay was FANTASTIC! Different breakfast every morning, eggs cooked to order, just delicious!! Clean room, complimentary soda, water, coffee, tea and popcorn in the room. Gorgeous gazebo outside, I could go on and on about this place. Let's just say we will definitely be returning at some point in the future.

We just enjoyed a second visit to the Cloran Mansion - as last year, the BEST experience for a B&B you could possibly have! We wanted a "one tank" trip from Chicago last year and Lake Geneva was only dog friendly if your dog is 10 pounds. LOL! We have a very well behaved 70 pound Golden Retriever (therapy dog) and Cheryl & Carmine allow pets in Antonio's Cottage, which we adore. Beautiful grounds, peaceful and a breakfast to write home about! We are GIANT fans and can't wait for our next visit in 2015!

The reviews are true. The Cloran Mansion is as good as it gets. Charming, romantic, delicious breakfasts and a dog-friendly cottage. Beautiful grounds, terrific, friendly owners and a relaxing atmosphere. Absolutely wonderful breakfasts that stay with you all day. We stayed for my birthday and they even had a delicious and pretty little cake waiting in our kitchen area - we stayed in Antonio's Cottage and LOVED it. We will be back!

This was absolutely perfect!!! We needed a place that was quiet, yet giving. Thank you, Carmine & Cheryl. We so enjoyed our restful and relaxing stay. We have stayed at so many Hotels, and we really needed to break that cycle. What a wonderful experience! This home is just lovely. Felicia and I felt so relaxed. We wandered the grounds and just took in the calm atmosphere. This is a definite must for anyone wanting to truly unwind.

This was our first bed and breakfast experience and it was wonderful. Relaxing, romantic, and lovely. The breakfast at the Cloran is worth the price of admission! Every morning is different and delicious. Carmine and Cheryl are personable and warm without being overbearing. They were wonderful hosts. We stayed in the Tower Room which was fantastic. I loved the whirlpool tub and the fireplaces. Yes. Plural. We also added on some extras; a private dinner and an in-house massage, both of which put our anniversary trip over the top. We weren't entirely sure what to expect but it was a fantastic stay and we would definitely stay there again if we returned to Galena. They made every aspect of our stay feel special, from the place settings at breakfast to the library of movies for a night in, and the atmosphere for the whirlpool tub (electric fireplace, bath salts, and sound system, they thought of everything!). Stay at the Cloran, you won't be disappointed.

This was our first Bed & Breakfast experience and it was wonderful. From the warm greeting when we arrived, to the beautiful suite and delicious breakfasts - it was overall superb. Cheryl and Carmine have a wonderful caring heart and only want their guests to have excellent service. The mansion itself is beautiful and immaculately clean. The suites are spacious and romantic. It was such a nice perk to check out movies in their movie library and play some of the games. We loved it so much we booked our next stay before we even left.

What an absolutely LOVELY place this is!! The rooms are beautiful and welcoming. You can see that there is a real attention to detail in everything they do at this B&B. Which brings me to the breakfast that they serve, EXCEPTIONAL is the first word that comes to mind! Their breakfast is not your typical B&B food. It is delicious and plentiful - eggs to order, bacon, sausage. The cinnamon swirl pancakes and the freshly prepared hash browns are my favorites! The owners, Cheryl & Carmine are TOP NOTCH! Its like being welcomed home for each visit. They are very knowledgeable about Galena and they are always ready with a local recommendation for food or shopping. I really can't say enough good things about my experiences with the Cloran Mansion!! Give them a try, you won't be disappointed!!!

So... I really wanted to love this place based on all the amazing reviews I have read. And I have gone back and forth a couple of times in my head deciding whether or not to post this review because the owners seem like lovely people and I really wanted to be able to give a raving review. But-- this is not the case. The online photos made the bed and breakfast look much bigger and much more beautiful than it actually is. It is located right off the main highway directly across the street from Galena High School. Its a terrible location that isn't secluded at all and it is quite a ways from the cute part of Galena.... about a 40 minute walk. I had envisioned it being in a quiet, secluded, romantic area based on the photos but I was very wrong. The room we stayed in was dated. It looked much more up to date in the photos. The bathroom sink was coming out of the wall, the tiny tv was in a corner of the room and very difficult to see. But the worst of it was in the middle of the night I woke up from a rustling sound. I looked over the side of my bed and there was a mouse rummaging through a plastic Walgreens bag that I had left on the floor literally right next to my bed. That absolutely ruined the night. We were up the rest of the night and left Galena as soon as it was light enough out to drive. We were so looking forward to a romantic getaway weekend and we absolutely did not get that. A mouse in a room in a romantic bed and breakfast (that costs a lot of money per night) is not acceptable. We lost an entire day in Galena because we just wanted to get out of town once that happened. So much for our getaway weekend. The owners were apologetic and offered a free night stay in the future. We absolutely will not be back. I requested a refund for one night since we did not sleep due to the mouse, we did not eat our breakfast that came with the cost of the room because of the mouse, and we lost a full day in Galena due to wanting to get out of town so quick because of the mouse. The owners have not responded to that request. So overall.... we really wanted to love this place. It had amazing photos online and great online reviews. We really felt that we had done our research before choosing this place. However, between the terrible location, the dated decor, and the mouse in our room, we can not recommend this place to anyone.

This was our first trip to a B&B, we were not disappointed. The Cloran Mansion hosted our wedding and made sure the whole process was completely stress free. Cheryl and Carmine are the nicest people, and Carmine can tell you the whole history of Mansion. Not to mention Carmine is an amazing chef! Breakfast was phenomenal, and the hours breakfast is served is reasonable, you can actually sleep in and still get breakfast. We stayed in "Antonio's cottage", the cottage is amazing! Heated floors, a fireplace, well you can check out the website for the photo's. We also opted for the dinner served in the cottage, well worth the nominal expense for such a phenomenal meal! The mansion itself is beautiful and Carmine allowed us to tour the unoccupied rooms. All of the rooms are beautifully done. We cannot wait to return to the Cloran Mansion. This place is great! We were holding on to a gift certificate for a couple of years and then finally decided to use it and it was well worth while and we will stay there again on our next visit to Galena. We stayed in Antonio's Cottage and it was great to be secluded outside of the house and have our own private experience. Cheryl and Carmine were both great and actually interacted with the guests over breakfast which I loved as everyone gets to know everyone. The food was outstanding and among some of the best we have had at a B&B and we have stayed at a lot of them. No wonder it was voted as the 4th most romantic B&B in the US by TripAdvisor. Highly recommended!!!

I can't believe I haven't left a review for this place on here! I bought a weekend stay at Cloran Mansion for my boyfriend's birthday last November and it was truly the best surprise! Neither of us have ever stayed at a bed & breakfast and I wanted to find a nice quiet place for us to get away from the daily stresses of work, school and family. I will admit that I was very nervous about it because I didn't know what to expect at all, but I read a lot of really good reviews so I figured why not. We stayed in the Tower Room, and I ordered the Strawberries & Champagne to have when we arrived. All the rooms have fireplaces, and as I can only speak for the Tower room, I can imagine that all the other rooms must be just as cozy and comfortable. Cheryl a& Carmine are such amazing hosts and were very helpful throughout our stay, I did tell them that we were both nervous (me especially because it was my boyfriends birthday weekend, so I really wanted it to be as nice as possible) and they reassured me that it would be just fine and it was absolutely fantastic! The only downside is that the mansion did have every room occupied that weekend, and my boyfriend and I are not social butterflies, we're both very introverted people who have to put on an extroverted facade throughout the day and by the time we get home it's definitely time to unwind and relax. That being said, we didn't get the opportunity to try their breakfast because the first day we came down a little later and all the other guests stuck around the dining room to chat after they were done eating. The second day my boyfriend went to see if the dining room was full, and it was but a couple got up after they were done eating so that we could have a seat, however the dining room was still packed with people even standing around the table & there was a gentleman standing behind the two empty chairs talking and laughing with the group and I just felt uncomfortable with sitting right in front of him. In all honesty, my boyfriend and I just wanted to enjoy breakfast together and talk about the weekend, etc. I did ask Carmine if ordering breakfast to take to our room in the future was possible and he said absolutely. We definitely plan on returning (those blueberry pancakes sounded amazing!), I truly recommend this bed & breakfast for anyone who has never gone to one before.

My sister and brother in law held their intimate wedding at The Cloran Mansion. There were only twelve us in attendance and we all stayed at the B&B. Cheryl and Carmine are attentive without being overbearing. I truly felt like we were staying with good friends. The Inn is beautiful, breakfast is phenomenal and they truly made my sister's day special and stress-free! I would certainly recommend that anyone considering a B&B in Galena stay with Cheryl & Carmine!

First of all, I have a hard time believing when one business receives multiple 5 stars online from so many customers. In regards to Cloran Mansion, I am a believer! This was our first stay here at Cloran Mansion and in Galena, IL; and let me just say Cheryl & Carmine really make you feel at home and are absolutely wonderful hosts. We were lucky enough to stay in the cottage next to the Mansion, they allowed us to bring our dog with us for a small fee, and they accommodated us to check in beyond 10pm when we arrived. The cottage itself has heated floors throughout, fireplace, in-room spa tub, and an adorable little eating area. If that wasn't enough, Cheryl & Carmine also went out of their way to provide free cola (regular & diet), water, popcorn, coffee, tea, iron & ironing board, satellite TV with HBO, DVD player, and bath salt for the in-room spa! Cheryl & Carmine also provided free shower gel for bathing (regular size mind you!), shampoo, and conditioner! Seriously, they literally thought of everything to make your stay enjoyable, including the peanut butter cookies with Hershey's Kiss waiting on the table for us after a long day walking around the town. To save the best for last, let's just say the breakfast is MEMORABLE!!!!! Our first day there we ate the following: Cinnamon pancakes with white creamy topping, eggs to order, fresh hash browns, English muffins-buttered!, sausages, orange juice, coffee, and fresh fruit in a wonderful yogurt sauce. Mind you, this was all you can eat!! On our second day there, our breakfast consisted of: French Toast, sausage patties, fresh fruit, fried potatoes sliced, eggs to order, orange juice, coffee, cranberry juice, and buttered toast. This was all you can eat as well!!! In addition to the above, Cheryl & Carmine offer free Wifi in the Mansion and free Hotspot in the adjacent cottage. If you are looking for a place that allows pets (cottage only) and is worth the money for ambiance and romance, then Cloran Mansion is it!!!! Please take my advice, STAY HERE!!! You will be sorry if you don't.

The Cloran Mansion is quite possibly the best Bed and Breakfast I have stayed. From the time you are greeted at the door by Carmine and Cheryl to the time you leave, you feel like a part of their family. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, which was in the Tower room. The breakfast was top-notch and the rooms were cozy. I probably had the best sleep in a while there. One of the many reasons to stay there is that Carmine has standing reservations at various restaurants so you don't have to try to find a place on Saturday night. I definitely recommend the Cloran Mansion.

We have stayed at B&B's in the US and Europe and you can tell when your hosts are in it for the money and when they are in it for the love of the business. Cheryl and Carmine are extraordinary hosts who clearly are in it for the love of people and their guests' experience. Claron Mansion is a beautiful home and I understand has lovely gardens which we will enjoy on a return trip since the weather did not allow us to see them under the snow. We had Sarah's room that was large, bright and beautiful with a private whirlpool and fireplace, seating area and one of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept in. Cheryl was very helpful In suggesting places to go to enjoy in Galena. Everything was included in the room charge from bottled water, popcorn,warm cookies, pop and coffee. Wonderful antique appointments surrounded us and the elegant, delicious and very generous breakfast affirmed our feeling that our hosts really care and want to make us feel special and appreciated. We highly recommend Cloran Mansion to Galena travelers.

My Boyfriend and I just spent a lovely weekend at this adorable bed and breakfast. The inn keepers, Carmine and Cheryl are beyond hospitable. Our room was gorgeous. We stayed in Sara's suit which had a large king size bed, whirl pool tube for two, fireplace and a kitchenette stocked with sodas, water, coffee and tea. What i loved the most was all the little extras that you get without any extra cost. All the items in the fridge were complimentary, along with an extensive dvd library to get movies to watch, popcorn and cookies to snack on. Although snacks were not necessary as the breakfast was so extensive with made to order eggs, pancakes, potatoes fruit and coffee we didn't even have room for lunch. This was by far one of our favorite places to stay. Big thanks.

Cloran Mansion is fantastic. Carmine and Cheryl are very friendly, the breakfast was delicious, and the rooms were extremely clean and well-kept. We appreciated their flexibility with the breakfast menu (careful attention to allergies and preferences, eggs made to order, etc.) Not to mention, that whirlpool tub was so wonderful! I took my husband there for a special birthday getaway and I guarantee you we will be back. We wanted to stay another day, but because they were booked, they helped us get a room very nearby AND got us reservations at a delicious restaurant. Clearly, they support the local community. It was a peaceful and fun stay.

Carmine & Cheryl are a sweet couple with a great story. For their second career, they followed a dream of buying a charming mansion B&B in lovely Galena. They've made it a cozy and magical place by listening to their guests' suggestions. They have an extensive DVD collection - over 500 titles, digital cable, wireless internet, and personal fridges that they stocked with Pellegrino, soft drinks, and water. I didn't go home this Thanksgiving, and missed the family melee. It was wonderful to have a family-style Thanksgiving with a lovely, diverse group of people who also happen to be other guests at the B&B. No melee, but I loved it. Dinner was a huge juicy turkey, delectable ham, candied yams, homemade cranberry sauce, and other sides and bread. C & C keep the desserts - pumpkin pie, apple pie, decadent chocolate cake, whipped cream - out on the table until 10 pm on Thanksgiving night for those who need to stretch their bellies prior to engaging in further stuffing themselves. Morning breakfast was family style, too. I was telling my friends about their light French toast on thick bread encrusted with cornflakes, almonds, and cranberries, and they were sad to find out that this French toast was not in Chicago. Loved the fresh-squeezed OJ, cranberry juice, coffee, sausage, and rolls. We were full enough from breakfast until dinnertime.

My first experience at a bed & breakfast, and not one thing to nit pick! Carmine and Cheryl (the owners of the 1880's mansion) do everything possible to make you feel at home in the Cloran Mansion. We stayed in the cottage, because we wanted to bring our little dog with, and they allow pets in the cottage. The cottage is so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. They are great cooks, and breakfast is something you don't want to miss. They serve all you care to eat, at least 6 different items, with eggs made to order. One of the best breakfasts I've ever had. They have 5 rooms inside (no pets) each with it's unique style. An extensive video collection available at no charge to guests. Just pick want you want for your room. Complementary pop & waters are in the fridge. Local restaurant menus are on hand. They have a screened in gazebo, a nice pond stocked with fish to sit by, and a fire pit with a load of wood to burn. It was great sitting around the fire talking with the other guests. They truly make sure your stay is hassle free, Cheryl even made our dinner reservations. I challenge you to visit just once! We'll be back...
