Absolutely outstanding food, great ambiance, patio was so nice to sit on a summer Friday night, and XX Lager on tap?!?! I was in heaven. The singer struck the right note between humor and entertainment and our waitresses was funny and helpful. The menu easily accommodated a vegetarian and someone ravenous for meat. Highly recommended.

Did not live up to others reviews. Food was just ok (steak tacos were very salty). We found the bathrooms dirty and smelly. Flies were bothering us all meal (we ate inside). Will take a pass next time we're in Galena.

I have been here a few times and it never disappoints! They have a cute little patio and pretty decent food for Galena. I absolutely love the service here. We went here when they were 15 mins away from closing and asked if we could come in for some appetizers and drinks and they were very happy to accommodate us. Everyone is really nice and their margaritas are delicious! I would always come back here just because of their service! They treat their customers well !

We had a party of 17, they took great care of us!! The food and margaritas were very good!!

Love the veggie fajitas!! Every time we come up, we absolutely MUST have one of their excellent margaritas, too. And the chunky guacamole, the bean dip & all their tacos are scrumptious.

I brought a couple of out-of-town visitors here for a week night dinner, and took advantage of the outdoor patio. The patio is comfortable and attractive, and the host very gracious and friendly. We were greeted by our server in due course. She turned out to be quite the impatient person when we took our time with deciding on drinks or dishes. Again, the usual Galena server reverse approach where the customer is there for the server. I just don't get that. And then there was the somewhat needy musician on the patio who tried to engage us and every other customer in some interactive conversation, instead of just playing while we all maintained our own private conversations. To me, the music and the musician on this small patio was more of an annoyance or a distraction than an enhancement of the dining experience. And more flies than I've ever seen in one place all summer. I think next time I might just eat indoors. As for the food, the menu is very comprehensive with lots of standard Mexican fare, many a la carte items and combination platters. we each opted for the latter. Mine was 1/2/carne asada, Chile relleno with rice and beans. The steak was nicely done and it weighed in on thisat about 4 ounces. The Chile was a cheese-filled poblano and was very good. Rice and refried beans were pretty awful. My friends enjoyed there enchilada quesadilla combos, though to me the quesadillas were sad little things. One little tortilla folded over with melted cheese. The salsas offered with chips were unremarkable, one resembling nothing more than a dish of crushed tomatoes dumped from a can and flavored with hot sauce. The tab for these mostly mediocre meals was around $25.00 per person with one drink, tax and tip. So not bad, but really for Mexican and things like rice and refried beans, to me it was all worth about half that. I will probably come back to try some of the a la carte items like the fish tacos ($5.00 each) or a burrito. And skip the tasteless side dishes. Or maybe breakfast? And again, eat indoors to minimize the multi-tasking challenge of eating drinking, chatting with friends, swatting flies and emotionally validating the musician.

Great service! Our waiter was awesome and very knowledgeable of the ingredients and menu items. We enjoyed the chips and pico de gallo. My date had the steak taco dinner I had the chicken mole. The mole sauce was delicious. We both had margaritas which were premixed and not very strong. There was live music not very good but entertaining and he took requests.

The inside of the restaurant looked like it used to be a service garage. It was dark, but not in that 'romantic lighting' sort of way. The tables were smushed and a bit too close for comfort, so I recommend eating outside. The reason why I'm giving it 3 stars is because the bathroom was dirty (ew) and the place wasn't ventilated. It smelled like gasoline fumes. Hence, one of the reasons I figured it was an old service station. (Also, the big garage doors was another major clue...what can I say, I could be Nancy Drew!) The chips and salsa weren't too great, but my husband's fish tacos were amazing. I ordered the fajitas and the portion was HUGE. Although the decor isn't anything to write home about, the food here is actually better than the other Mexican restaurant around the corner. My husband and I visit Galena a few times a year. And despite it all, because of our deep passion for Mexican food, this place will be a regular stop for us. We'll just suck it up, eat outside and wait to use the bathroom at our hotel. What can I say? We're suckers for good food.

Outdoor dining very comfortable. Musician vocalist pleasant and upbeat. Garlic shrimp entree was of a good size and flavorful. Salsa and sauces spicy and fresh. Margaritas large and potent. Attentive and friendly wait staff. Reasonably priced menu... What's not to like?

It was not very busy. It was 11:30 on a Saturday afternoon. Our menus were sticky and dirty from spilled salsa. I eat poblano peppers at every Mexican Restaurant we visit so i know good authentic tasting ones. Mine were very sour and did not look very good. The beef enchilada was made with ground beef. The carne asada was very bland, almost watered down tasting. Then the worst part was when I actually watched the waitress put a basket of chips from a table of people who had left back under the warmer by the other chips to be served again! We will never go back, in fact I am tempted to call the health department. Yuk! Also, it was way overpriced!

Amazing dinner and great margaritas. I had the breaded tilapia. Delicious. Very filling. My wife had the vegetarian fajitas. The margaritas are huge and quite tasty. I didn't find the chips too flavorful.

This was some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Vegetarian fajitas are fresh, crunchy, and not oily like most Mexican restaurants. There are several unique menu items. I tried the shrimp ceviche which was delicious on crackers! The salsa was different than most places and had a kick to it which we loved. Frozen margaritas were perfect, not too icey. The wait staff was friendly and there was live music outdoors. Be sure to make reservations for the outdoor patio. I can't wait to return to try other items!

The quality of the atmosphere, food, menu variety, decor, all beyond expectations. One of the best parts of the experience was the live music. The kind musician even introduced himself while welcoming any questions we may of had, requests, and of course dancing is permitted!

Excellent margarita. Fantastic tacos - steak, al pastor, y shrimp!! Friendly staff and attentive service. Don't miss this gem!

We went there 2-3 years ago and the place was much better. The quality has gone down. Pretty tasteless food. The ambiance is rather nice, but the food is bad. Service is good. We would not go back.

I'm giving five stars because the food is actually good and authentic. I live for mexican food, so I can say that I'm not some jackass reporting here. The inside ambiance sucks, but why do people go to restaurants? For the food!!! Stop hating!

Food and service were excellent! The chicken and steak in our burritos and taco was delicious. Quaint little restaurant. Lots of outside seating when weather is good.

This is the 2nd time I have eaten here. The food is pretty decent but the prices are pretty outrageous. $10.99 for queso? $8.99 for the margarita but an extra $1 to make the margarita frozen yet no one informed me? I was kind of peeved about that. I'm from Chicago & used to high prices but these high prices just surprised me!

I was in Galena this weekend with my husband & two children. We visit the area frequently and always like going downtown to eat. We went into Campeche on Saturday around 5ish and just beat the rush. Service was great, water refilled frequently, tasty (HOT) salsa & chips and the food was absolutely delicious. Steak tacos for one child, steak quesadilla for the other, steak burrito for hubby & Guisado de Puerco for me. The meat was phenomenal - no fatty pieces like you get in a lot of other places and the pork was actually melt in your melt tender. the guisado was a tad on the salty side for my taste but nothing that ruined my experience in anyway. Thoroughly enjoyable experience with wonderful food and extremely pleasant service. We will definitely be back.

Place was nice and friendly. The live music was a lot of fun. Good food. It was not spicy but you could add hot sauce if you wanted. We got an appetizer and split a combo dinner. More than enough food for 2 and no leftovers.

I visited this restaurant while in Galena last weekend with my partner and our friends. We decided to try it regardless of some if the negative reviews. I was very pleased with the variety and quality of the food. Our waitress and the other staff was very friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant - it is a good value for the quality and good sized portions.

We read all the reviews before we decided to try this restaurant .... We love authentic Mexican and fresh made margaritas .. This is the Real Deal ! Don't be in a hurry because everything is handmade and fresh , definitely worth the extra 5 mins. It's seems family owned & run Sit back and relax , enjoy it !

I was here for lunch on 6/23/12 and I thought it was fabulous! The only reason I even knew about the place is because I had driven everywhere for parking and saw the outdoor patio which looked like heaven. They are located on the very East side of Main Street, by Procento's. I sat outside and was given chips, hot sauce and tomatoes/pico. I really liked the fresh tomatoes/pico. It was fresh and sitting outside with iced tea made me feel like I was back at a resort on the beach. They have a soothing water fountain in the middle of their patio. I ordered the fish tacos and they were so flavorful, made with tilapia. The first time I've seen fish tacos where the fish isn't deep fried, which makes them healthier. I make these at home all the time with tilapia. If you're looking for a relaxing lunch on a warm day, this is the place to be.

I was really surprised to log on and find these terrible reviews for Campeche. First, they did a phenomenal job turning an abandon, dumping building into a warm, cute place that reminds you of being in Mexico (sans dirt and sand). Our service was good. Most important, I know, how is the food? Well, I was pretty satisfied. I didn't care for the guacamole which is a bummer as that's my fav starter at a Mexican place, but everyone was happy with their entrees and I didn't feel like we overpaid at all. I look forward to trying the patio when its warner and would definitely return.

one of the few outdoor dining venues in Galena...had dessert there and the 'Ronpope' sauce on the flan was truly unique..liked it so much went back for lunch the next day and had terrific fish and "el pastor" pork tacos. spoke with owner and daughter who clued me on the family tradition which started in chicago... would highly recommend

Exactly what the comment says when you roll over "two stars" - Meh, I've experienced better. The waiters were nice, but the food wasn't that great. The complimentary chips that they served us were very stale, and the salsa seemed very bland. I ordered the flautas. Each of them were supposed to have different fillings, (beef, chicken, and cheese), but the gray mush on the inside was indistinguishable.

Despite some not so great yelp reviews, we decided to give this place a try. WOW. We were not disappointed. My margarita was fantastic...and STRONG, no skimping on the alcohol here! Ordered the chicken enchiladas verde - chicken was FRESH and flavorful. The beans and rice were even very good (tasted fresh). My husband ordered the shirmp mole enchiladas and was raving about them. Our server (older gentleman, may have been the owner) was very friendly and attentive. Great food and service...leave any pretentious opinions at the door give it a try!

Great margarita. Reasonable prices. Excellent service. Margarita was definitely not watered down. Galena is full of old buildings and I have seen the occasional fly on many places here, however did not experience anything as described below. My steak chimi was great. Not shredded but chunks of streak. Kids meals were reasonable. Not overpriced at all. Only other mexican in the downtown area was a mex-american steak place. Now that menu looked overpriced.

Perhaps this place was worse on the past but I have never had a bad experience here and most definitely recommend it. You're in Galena people.... Not Chicago... Their menu and selections are good and we have had decent service. Don't take it too seriously and have a Don Julio 1942!!

Nice salsa fresca and echilada sauce and fresh chips. Sometimes places that put chips/salsa out gratis are stale, these were nice and fresh. They had some live music on a Friday nite. Gotta squeeze it in 'cause it's not a big place. We got the regular guac this time and it was good, looked bigger than it was because there was shaved iceberg lettuce underneath, but that was fine. The tacos and tostadas we had were decent. Frijoles tasty. On the rice, I needed to pour salsa/enchilada sauce on to zip it up a little. My wife's margarita was just ok. I had some Potosi Beer, fresh from the source as they are close to Potosi. It's still decent food. Still your best Mexican option in Galena...

Walked in and was a little worried at first but wow, they surprised us in a good way. Food and Service were awesome. Only wish, they used real fruit in their margaritas instead of fake flavors. Would have made it 5 stars!

WARNING: FULL OF FLIES. STAY AWAY! FLY EXPERIENCE: As soon as food was brought to our table, flies were all over our table. At one point, there were 3 flies at our table...At first, we tried to eat quickly while supervising the files...then we told the waiters the problem and they saw us swatting them away...then, a fly landed on my straw and I asked for a replacement straw...AND then one landed on my food, followed by a second fly...I called the waiter again, who came over and saw the flies flying around my plate. I told him what happened, and asked him to take away my plate (I ate less than 1/3rd)...Apart from the flies, the food was also blah. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE: I asked that my meal be removed from the check they brought, and a lady explained that only 1/2 could be removed based on me having ate some of it! She also said that the flies were not the restaurant's fault. I disagree, WE WERE INDOORS AND RESTAURANTS SHOULD BE CLEAN enough not to have an army of flies! We paid and left, trying to forget this terrible experience...but I am writing this Yelp review to warn all other tourists!

We were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. They have great seasonings, and the margaritas are delicious. We actually ate here twice on a week-long vacation. Maybe they changed owners, because there are a lot of negative reviews on yelp - not sure why.

This place was great for us because it was a beautiful evening and we wanted to dine outside. The patio is inviting and the food was delicious. The mini chimis are awesome and the signature dish from thier home town of Campeche is very unique. It had flavors one wouldnt expect from mexican food, but it was good! Prices were very good and we will be back!

This place is pretty bad. I mean it was clean and there was no confrontation with the server (in fact she was nice), but the food was just pretty terrible. The beef burrito I had made me feel like I was at a school cafeteria. It was just ground beef, onions, and salt - I'm not even exaggerating. And the tamale has so much clove that it was just unpleasant. The Steak taco and the enchilada were at least edible. I guess Chicago's Mexican food scene has just spoiled me...

I, too, am really very surprised that Campeche reviews are so low. I went with a group of 6 adults on 4/13/12. We all had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed all six meals and appetizers!!! I tasted everyone's dish and can vouch for them all (guacamole, queso, tilapia, large grilled shrimp, roasted pork, seafood soup, chocolate cake, to name a few). The wait staff were very attentive, friendly, funny, and geniune. We enjoyed the live music, which was played at an appropriate level of noise to allow for conversation. Since the summer crowd hasn't arrived yet, it wasn't very busy, but that didn't reduce our enjoyment. I'm looking forward to going back when it's warm to eat on their outside patio (a rarity in Galena).

Horrible service, I waited so long to get my ticket that I finally walked up to the girl at the register and asked to pay. The food was ok but nothing special and over priced. If you want good mexican food at a decent price go to Los Aztecas.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
