Kiku is a hidden gem. The service is always great and the food is excellent. Big portions typically, so you get your money's worth. It's usually cold in the winter so I leave my jacket on, but it definitely hits the spot. We go so often the server knows who we are and knows exactly what we are going to order before she even asks. They have great customer service and it's a family environment.

Not bad but not awesome either. I went there with a friend, it must have been a strange time for dinner because we were the only people in the restaurant at the time. At first service took forever... you'd think that with a full staff and no other customers we would be over-waited on but we did a lot of sitting and waiting. Service definitely picked up towards the 2nd half of our meal and everyone ended being really friendly. Not sure what was up in the beginning. The food was alright. Nothing super memorable, but, none of it was bad. One more plus, the place is decorated really well.

I've been here a couple of times - While the food is pretty, its just OK. If someone wants to take you there and is paying, its fine, but not really worth it. Every time ive been there, it's also been empty.

this place has a great lunch special, heard recently that it's no longer avaliable, cannot confirm. As far as their sushi, it's as good as any other local place, it's all been american-ized as I call it. Kyoto's in Crystal Lake is no better, no worse IMHO. If not for the lunch special I can go to a place closer to home. The sushi station,,, R U kidding me, yuk

BE WARNED!!! I ordered sushi for take out which took them 35 minutes to make.I paid almost $30 for a dragon roll, and chef special roll (very small pieces). I have a photo and receipt to prove it! I am Asian and I usually go to Tensuke in Arlington Hgts so i basically know what sushi should look like, taste, and cost. Tensuke uses fresher ingredients, more and bigger pieces and better service. To add insult, the owner, Yuki, is very rude. Go somewhere else for sushi and hibachi. Dont waste your money on poor service and over-priced food.

I'm a frequent visitor and truly believe that Kiku's has some of the freshest sushi in the area (Carpentersville, Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, Huntley). It's obvious that all the sushi is made when you order. I've never eaten from the Hibachi tables; only sushi. Prices are reasonable. A previous reviewer recommended Sushi Station over Kiku's. I have to disagree 100%. They're two different restaurants. If you want a relaxed atmosphere with fresh sushi and good ambiance, then go to Kiku's. If you need a quick sushi fix in a loud, fast food atmosphere, then go to Sushi Station. If you go to Kiku's, ask for Yuki. She's our favorite server there.

Always fun to watch the cook do his thing. I am not a sushi person, so I can't comment on that part of the menu. Good Saki and the Hibachi is always entertaining. The food is good but not great.

NASTY! My shrimp had poop in in still! Everything had teriyaki sauce on it and I mean EVERYTHING including the shrimp rice and vegetable! By far the nastiest, rubber chicken and undercooked food I've ever had!!! Nasty we left in the middle of them cooking it and said enough of this !!!

Me and my fiancé ordered a Millennium roll, a Philadelphia roll, a Iso Yuki Maki Roll, and salmon nigiri for lunch. The bill came out to be around $45. The salmon on the salmon nigiri was very generously portioned, and fairly well priced compared to other Japanese restaurants around the area (about 1/2 the price). The fish quality was above average. The nigiri was good enough that we'll probably come back to try their sashimi bowl for two next time. The Philadelphia roll tasted like what you'd expect a Philadelphia roll to taste like (pretty hard to butcher this one). We liked the Iso Yuki Maki roll better than the Millennium roll. We'd probably order a different roll than the Millennium next time; it wasn't bad, but not great. Our main grip about this place was that the rice seemed like it could be day old rice, it was a bit hard. A little boy came to give us the check. We think it's a family owned business. He was pretty adorable.

So I've been up in parts over yonder doing some house sitting and each day on my way home, I pass Kiku Sushi. I haven't ever been inside for their hibachi but I have gotten their sushi to go a couple times. It was good enough to grab more than once on my way home, but not something I'd go out of my way for. On my most recent trip I had the : +Volcano Roll $8.20 - This roll was insanely spicy for me (I'm way weak). The ingredients didn't list the spicy sauce and hot mustard on the outside, spicy tuna, avocado, cream cheese. I was surprised it was just a 6 piece roll but it was tasty and deep fried. I wouldn't get this again because my tongue nearly fell off, but for those of you that like spicy, I'm sure it will be a win. +Sweet potato roll $4.75 - They call it a yam tempura roll. It has very light breading on the potatoes and the potatoes were cut into several thick slivers which I haven't seen often. Loved this roll and it's the best price I've seen on a veggie roll in awhile. +Spicy tuna roll $6.20 - My mouth was on fire again! But another good roll. I see myself coming often for a couple of the sweet potato rolls and calling it a day. Good service, good food, no qualms about Kiku Sushi. I saw some signs about special happy hour pricing which I didn't see anywhere on their website. Heads up if you like a deal!

If I could give 0 stars, I would because this place is just simply that bad! PLEASE NOTE - this place is not the same owner nor same concept as the KiKu that everyone is familiar with in Naperville. I had the steak / scallops and my husband had the chicken / salmon. The steak seriously tasted like it had gone bad while the scallops and salmon tasted so fishy which means it probably wasn't even fresh. They use teriyaki sauce for everything. Other hibachi places, when they state "Shrimp appetizer" they serve you either the golden or garlic shrimp, at this place they serve you 1 jumbo shrimp with teriyaki sauce in it. Completely nasty and would never think about going back there.

I liked this place a lot. We ended up spending about $50 on the food but it was more than enough food for 2 people and that included tip. We went around 4:45 on a Wednesday and we were the only people in the restaurant. I will say the hours of the place are a bit weird, so before just stopping by make sure they're open! The service was a bit slow which was strange since we were the only people there, but the sushi was absolutely delicious. We got several different kinds and all of them were great! We will definitely be back and we can't wait to try the hibachi as well! They have the tables where they cook in front of you, so we will be going back some night with friends to try that!

I was hoping for a much better experience. It's a local , family owned business. The pork katsu is done with small panco crumbs. Yaki Soba was good, little greasy. Sushi is ehh, kinda like Sushi station quality. Although other Mchenry county Japanese restaurant s are more expensive, they are better.

Junk. Definitely not the same as the Naperville restaurant with the same name. Wouldn't order here again.

I have ordered take out from Kiku a few times in the past, and eaten in the restaurant once or twice. Today we were promptly greeted by a friendly hostess and seated in a booth with one vinyl seat ripped wide open (no big deal but worth mentioning), directly across from the door to the kitchen. The restaurant was semi-busy, not packed but not empty. We waited TWENTY minutes without so much as a glass of water or a hello. No one seemed to notice when my party walked out unserved. The food here is decent, not earth shattering but good enough for a rare date night. Their service sucks balls.

If I could give zero stars I would. Idk why they insist on putting Teriyaki sauce on everything. Steak, lobster and shrimp included. Clearly not eating my food the "chef" asks if everything was ok... I tell him that my wife and I did not enjoy the food and that we would not pay for the steak that wasn't on our plate yet. He gets the owner and this guy was nothing but arrogant and rude. I tell him that I am willing to pay for the food that we were served, but not for the steak that did not make it to our plate yet and dropped on the floor in front of us. He continued to tell me I had to pay for it and ended the conversation by dropping an "F-You!". Absolutely unacceptable no matter the circumstances. I still paid for everything except the steak and left a good tip because I don't believe in punishing the guys just doing their jobs. I will however, do everything in my power to make sure nobody I know go to this place. Horrible service, worse food and the owner.... My jaw is still on the floor after hearing what came out of his mouth.

We have been to Kiku a few times. It is the closest and most affordable Hibachi near our house. Kiku has always hit the spot, but never been the freshest or amazing. So when we went a few days before Christmas to enjoy a meal and buy gift certificates for friends we pretty much knew what we were in for. BUT this time it was significantly worse. First off...no Cable? All the TV's were off and there was no music. We asked to put the TV on because there was a Bear's game on, and she said they no longer had cable. (???) The order the hibachi was served in was all out of whack. Salad..then appetizer..meat before rice and veggies last. Very off. We were actually scared to buy gift cards for our friends; worried they wouldn't be open long enough to redeem. We might give Kiku one more chance because of convenience, but they really need to get their game back!

I like stopping here after a workout to get a light dinner of steamed dumplings and Miso soup! The takeout is very quick and the prices aren't outrageous. I'd like to come one day and try the hibachi selections. Love you Kiku!

I have to agree with some of the other reviews here. The place is good but not great. I decided to give Kiku a try after scoring 4 $25 Restaurant.com certificates (at 90% off). Were it not for the certificates, I would probably never have gone in the place. Kiku is not very big inside, but the space is well utilized. At the front of the restaurant is a bar, followed by a total of 4 teppanyaki grills, some seating along the west wall, a sushi bar further back and a private enclosed dining area at the rear. Very well thought out and it works for me. I'm a huge fan of teppanyaki, so we asked to be seated there. I wanted to try a little bit of everything, so I ordered some sushi, some sashimi, a seaweed salad, and a teppanyaki entree. First, the sushi -- It was very good. I'm very critical of most sushi unless it is absolutely perfect and their offering was a solid 9 out of 10. The seaweed salad was equally good. Again, not the best I have ever had, but a solid 9 out of 10 as well. Next came a simple lettuce salad with ginger dressing. Also very good. Mushroom soup -- very good as well. Another couple was seated next to us, making for a total of 4 guests at our teppanyaki station. Unlike what other reviewers have said, I found the service to be timely and competent. You don't come to a teppanyaki restaurant expecting the swiftness of a McDonald's drive-thru. Our dirty plates were constantly removed, water glasses kept full and regular visits by the waiter inquiring about the meal and whether we needed anything. The chef arrived and commenced his show. No new tricks here. Pretty much all the same as what you would expect from any other teppanyaki restaurant. Two comments though -- The teppanyaki chef we had seemed somewhat clumsy and his knives seemed dull. Call me an over the top critic, but if a guy is twirling knives and spatulas a foot from my head, I want him to inspire confidence in me that I know I'm not going to loose an eye. Several times, I found myself backing way up for fear that a knife was going to come flying at me. At other teppanyaki restaurants, I'm always amazed with how sharp their knives are. They seem to cut through a steak or piece of chicken as if it were warm butter. Our chef seemed to have trouble getting his knife to cut through any of the meat and instead, ended up tearing away at most of it. Just a minor point, but something that stood out. One neat thing he did was give each of us multiple "shots" of saki which he delivered to our mouths via a squirt bottle. The saki is used multiple times throughout the preparation of the food and each time he used the saki, he would deliver a healthy squirt of saki straight into our mouths. Kinda neat and the saki was actually a good quality, smooth saki. One of the ladies at the table apparently had some sanitary issues with saki being delivered to all of us that way and she declined. Apparently she has never had a night out at a bar in Mexico. The meal itself was well prepared and tasted great. I thought the rice may have been a bit undercooked though and I would have appreciated some toasted sesame seeds and some mushrooms in my chicken entree. All in all, a good time was had and I will definitely be going back to Kiku, at least three more times, especially considering I have three more Restaurant.com certificates left. The food was worthy of four stars, but I restricted my rating to three this time because of a clumsy teppanyaki chef. Part of the whole teppanyaki experience is to be wooed and awed by the performance. In this case, the performance left me wondering whether the pointy end of a high speed knife was coming my way.

We have been to numerous Hibachi Restaurants in the area.. and this is by far.. the worst. The hostess was the first person that we encountered ( naturally ), and she was so unpleasant. The actual waitress was pretty friendly though. I ordered a dynamite roll -- the waitress told me it was really spicy.. it wasnt. To be honest.. the sushi was kinda horrible. I have had better from Walmart. After that, they brought us the soup and the salad.. I thought the soup was ok, and my wife thought it tasted burnt. The salad dressing was good- but the lettuce was browning. ... Then , they kept seating people at our table-- we waited an hour from the time we got there to the time the "chef" finally came out to cook. He didnt seem to have a clue of what he was doing. First item after that was the fried rice...The rice at Panda Express is so much better than this stuff... Then the vegetables.. which werent too bad. Then the shrimp appetizer-- on the recomendation of another lady at the table, I tried the " golden sauce"-- which was supposed to be an egg yolk sauce.. I typically love this stuff at any other HIbachi place we have been to-- This stuff was like ... some sort of yellowish gloop. I had ordered the Filet and Shrimp. Unfortunatly, the "cehf" put this gloop on my other shrimp too.... It did somewhat hide the flavor of the shrimp that would suggest the shrimp was probably no where near fresh. Then came the so called filet... I am not exaggerating when I say that I have had sirloin at the Golden Corral that is better than this. It was small, the quality was poor and the flavor was even worse. Needless to say that we wont be back. I wouldnt even suggest this place to anyone else. I dont typically write bad reviews.. But after the lack of service and the poor quality of the food... I think that 1 star is all this place deserves. Dine at your own risk.

Took the family to meet some friends the other night. We had a party of 8, but we had to wait on one person. While we waited we ordered appetizers and drinks, but the waitress kept pushing us to order our en trees (Annoying). Once our 8th showed up everything went smoothly. I ordered several rolls and my standard salmon sashimi. I did only get two pieces which was a downer, but it was excellent. My wife ordered the scallops, probably the best I've ever had. The kids shared the Hibachi shrimp, California roll, Miso, and some rice. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and the portions were plenty. Of course I stole a couple of their shrimp. My friends ordered the filet Hibachi and the sirloin Hibachi. I'm the table hawk so I got to try everything. The waitress kept the sake coming, and also suggested a plum wine that I'll be ordering from now on. I can't wait to go back.

I really wanted this place to be good and this is where we would get our sushi as we live very close. Once Sushi Station opened (and I outgrew my fear of ordering food at a place called Sushi Sation) we decided to give it a try. It's not the best but it's better than Kiku. Kiku is overpriced for the quality of the sushi and it always seems under staffed. The Hibachi experience was also nothing special.

The food is terrific. The service used to be as well. Lately it seems that the restaurant is under staffed. The last several visits it took them about 10 minutes to seat us, when there were maybe 3 other couples in the whole place. My final attempt to dine there was unsuccessful. There was a 1 group at a hibachi table and 3 sets of customers there. After waiting about 10 minutes a waitress blows by us, didn't even acknowledge us then walk back to the kitchen muttering in frustration. Those poor girls needed some additional help. I walked out ate at another sushi place down the street. So long Kiki. Alas I enjoyed your food for the past year, they need to work on staffing.

I wish I could give this place a 3.5 stars but it's really funny because sometimes this place is actually 4.5. The thing is, if it were for better service (or servers that actually spoke English) it would be a great place. I never really understand why ethnic restaurants have servers that speak that language but not English. And, I mean, Japanese is a pretty hard language to try to comprehend even if you are a fan of sushi. Anyway, the sushi here is PHENOMENAL. If you can get past the service issues -- and don't get me wrong, the people are very nice, they just don't speak any form of comprehensible English nor do they understand any form of comprehensible English (except for the sushi chef and one server) -- you will come out a very satisfied customer. The smoked salmon just melts in the mouth, the las vegas maki is AMAZING, the selection of menu items is extensive and they also have delicious Hibachi, which, in my opinion, outdoes Benihanna any day. The sushi is always amazingly fresh and everything is very well displayed. The tempura is excellent (and I don't usually like tempura) and the appetizers are very, very tasty. Try it if you want some delicious eats and are in a good enough mood to make light of the service and the general feeling that you're in Japanese discotheque. It's worth it, really. Pricing is also good. My hubby and I usually go and have 4 -5 rolls with a few pieces of sushi and miso soups and we spend about $60 for the both of us. They have neat lunch specials too. 2 rolls $8.50 includes soup and salad, 3 rolls for $10.50 including soup and salad, hibachi lunch specials about $8 - $10, and lunch box specials about $9 each including soup and salad. It's true that if you go there on an off hour (the place is in Carpentersville, for god's sake) it feels deserted but it's a real gem if you can get past it.

My husband and I went to lunch there during the week. There were 6 people dining total when we were there. Our service was lousy. I ordered the sushi lunch special and got some chicken thing. When the server finally came back with my meal we had been there 45 minutes. Seriously slow service and the waiter disappeared a lot. Won't visit again.

Truly the worst place for servive that I have ever been to.The food was just okay. The Hibachi chef seemed like he was in training. The waitress was the meanest ,nastiest person I have ever met.Thought she wanted to fight but I was against it because she probably knew karate. DO NOT EAT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Todd T.

I have tried eating here before, it was not busy at all. I was told that they were fully booked and was turned away. I will never bother going back, just got to Sushi Station instead. Save money too. or Kyoto's in Crystal Lake if you really want Hibachi

  • Gracielle T.

Service is poor since they are understaffed - there was one girl doing everything from hosting, serving, and handling carryout orders. So as a customer there was a 10 minute wait to be seated, 15 mins to get drinks/submit order, another 45 minutes to get food, 20 minutes to pay...it seriously took FOREVER. Food is under-portioned and served on huge plates. Salad tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge, tempura was stale, and the teriyaki beef came out cold! Menu is WAY over-priced. $16 for cold teriyaki beef...$5 for 5 small pieces of sweet potato tempura. Ridiculous!

Kiku of Carpentersville, IL has a nice logo for starters. The interior of the restaurant is well designed and clean. Although it is somewhat smaller than your typical teppanyaki/sushi joint, it seems to be laid out in a very efficient manner. Of note is that only half of the restaurant is for hibachi teppanyaki dining while the other half consists of a bar, nice looking booths, and a quaint little sushi bar. Of special note is the large private booth area that is towards the back of the restaurant. This booth can be closed off with some very unique Japanese style sliding doors. The service here was just ok. We had some trouble with trash buildup on our table, and at one point I was forced to remove the trash myself and place it on the adjacent table (which was vacant thankfully). The food selection is about what you might expect at any teppanyaki restaurant. Although I did not try and of the sushi, I've heard it is good. My entree of filet mignon and lobster tail were about average tasting. Not as good though as Ju-Rin of South Elgin or Kampai of Mount Prospect, IL. Overall I probably would rather spend my money at either of those fine establishments over this one. But the $25 gift certificates that I have from Restaurants.com will keep me coming back at least 4 more times! Oh and also of note, I believe they have a half-price beer special. That means their $7 Sapporos are only $3.50! You just can't get that special if you're using a gift certificate. So fyi!

The food is good, the service is getting better. Call ahead for a reservation, they're pretty busy most nights. Atmosphere is nice, right now they have one main choppa-choppa show guy so you'll want to call for reservations. His show is pretty much the same every time, but my kids love it which is most likely why I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 3 1/2 I want them to be better, and they seem to be gradually improving. Went there last night and there was new staff helping clear the tables which was great. Service can still be a little bit of a sticking point. I'm sure we'll check back in a couple weeks and see where they're at.

DO NOT EAT HERE!!!! This is not only the worst Japanese restaurant I have ever been to but the worst restaurant period, both for the food, and for the "service"! Never have I been to a place that refused to make it right and then swore at us as we walked out the door. Save yourselves! If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I was so appalled and felt so ripped off that I rushed home so that I could write this review. In fact, I went through the trouble of registering for this site for the same reason. I am at a loss for words. Where do I start? Immediately upon being served our salad, I could tell the entire was going to be sub par. Soggy iceberg lettuce? Really? Immediately upon being served my "Spicy Maki Trio" or whatever it was called, I noticed how small and plain the sushi was. 6 x 3 pieces of practically microscopic sushi for $16.95??? The filling was clearly chopped up frozen "salmon" (I could tell because the inside was cispy and ice cold) and lacked avocado and cucumber. Same goes for the "tuna" and "crab." And it was anything but spicy. I'VE HAD BETTER WALMART. My dad's meal was a piece of salmon and 2 pieces of asparagus in the middle of a huge plate. It was immediately obvious how little food it was. THE KICKER? OUR MEAL WAS AN UNBELIEVABLE $45. It was noon and they wouldn't give us a lunch rate. The portions were shockingly tiny. The customer "service" is another story. One, we were new customers and they were unwilling to give us any specials even after I politely asked. Usually these places try to blow away their new customers. Anyways, so when I complained about the quality and value of my food, I had three people explain to me that there was "nothing they could do" and that they "serve the same thing to everyone." THEY LITERALLY REFUSED TO MAKE IT RIGHT. This has never happened before in all the restaurants I've been to. All I asked them was to take off the the individual price of one of the rolls and they flat out refused and gave no explanation. I have NEVER had maki that has tasted this terrible or was this tiny. I have been to EVERY japanese restaurant in the area and this is BY FAR THE WORST. It is also THE WORST RESTAURANT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO! Why do you think everybody took the time to write such long complaints? This is the first time I left $0 tip. Luckily, the lady cursed at us as we left. Unbelievable.

I wrote a review for this restaurant when it first opened, I loved it! we went often and had a great time. so much for the old days. My last two visits have done them in. LOUSY SERVICE. I for the first time in my life did not tip the waitress...or was it a waiter??? I dunno cause they never came back. They have always been slow, but this was non existant. I guess they dont care anymore and is sure shows. Wouldn't take my worst enemy to this place...back to bistro wasabi for me...

If you want fresh fish, great service and rolls that are as artistic as they are great tasting, this is the place to go. They have several rolls that do not include rice, so you can enjoy a roll without getting stuffed on rice. Ask for a salmon flower or sweet heart roll or tuna martini and you will be hooked. You can order from the menu or from a book of photos of their rolls so you will know exactly what you are getting. The service is very friendly and never rushed like the mechanical sushi restaurants. They also have several teppanyaki tables if you are so inclined. The sashimi is thick and always fresh.

ew, talk about wannabe jappaneese... I had their hibachi there it had no flavor, and was horrible.. I like new places, but I'd rather stick with Kobe down the street its WAY better! & actually I can stomach eating it... when I went here I did not even eat my meal that is how disgusting it was!

To be fair I was only here ones and will never be there again so my review may not represent this business overall quality. Hate to be the first to post a negative review. To start we have made reservations for twelve people for 7:30PM New Years Eve. And it all went terrible wrong from there. People showed up in groups, the first arrived right at 7:30. My group arrived closer to 8:15 and no one was seated when we got there. Everyone was standing, all the tables were full, servers running around frantically, phone ringing with no one to pickup. The place pretty much overbooked. We didn't get seated till late 8:45pm and our drinks didn't come for another fifteen minutes. There was a party of four that came in after us who got a whole table to themselves right away while we still waited for ours to be cleaned. When we got seated, seemed like 45 minutes before our chef showed up with the food. Same chef that was just there 20 minutes ago. Did they run out of rice and had to cook from scratch? Was he taking an hour long break? Just a small "thank you for waiting" when he finally showed up with the food. How long can it take to place uncooked meat and vegetables on a cart anyway? We got no apology and specifically no call informing us that our reservations needed to be pushed back. My group was hosting a NYE party that was supposed to start @ 10pm but we we're still eating. At this time the hosts where forced leave before the main course was served. Terrible experience for them and the rest of us. But who knows. Maybe they just overbooked, staff called off, or a not-so gracious previous party overstaying their welcome, eitherway you would think that we would somehow be compensated for the bad experience. WRANG. During the entire dinner the manager never came over to say anything, one person did talk to him about the inconvenience and we were hoping for at least a free alcoholic drink refill while we wait around. (FYI: Tipsy people are less likely to complain about service and tip better!) Once the chef came things got started. His performance was good but towards the end he stopped talking or doing tricks, probably because some of us where talking about how poor service was and he didn't wanna get involved, not his fault, he tried though. The food itself wasn't bad, I've had better at other Hibachi restaurants. There was no choice on the preparation style, everything seemed to be Teriyaki. He did make an excellent rare steak, it was still cold at the center! How I like it. (only reason this review gets two stars) But even the chef wasn't immune to the incompetence of the work staff. He made a big mistake and not serve the vegetable till the very end. The whole time while he prepared the main dish the veggies where just steaming in the corner. He pretty much forgot about them. After we had our fill and boxed the remaining food for those who had to leave early we talked to the owner and the manager and explained to them how badly the service was and how they should really call if they are overbooked. You would think that maybe they would cut our bill by 15% or not charge for drinks (almost everyone had one) or give a gift certificate. Nope, they only thing they said that in the future they would make sure to call their clients. Well, apparently their ignorance on the need to satisfy their current customers failed, non of us gave them a tip. That's twelve people @ $40 a person. Sorry to the cook, he missed out on his cut. Anyway, that was my experience. I hope this place will cleanup its act, seemed like a new location with nice decor. Just make sure you call ahead for a table, they only got three.
