Just no. We were the only customers in there. Decor was cute but a bit dated. I asked for a glass of wine and the server said there wasn't a bartender so all he could do was beer and margaritas. Um okay. You can't pour wine into a glass? So I ordered a margarita, no huge deal. But still....strange.... Margarita was ok. Chips and salsa were the best part of the meal. I ordered the chicken quesadillas. Should have stuck with just plain cheese. They were crispy, perfectly done and the cheese was good....but the chicken was so bland that after one bite I picked it off. And it was rubbery and gray....felt like it was off of a Rotisserie chicken from the local market days ago. It was just inedible. I asked for some extra sour cream to try and tolerate my meal and it was runny and slimy. I couldn't eat it. Mild sauce was eh, hot sauce was hot but still didn't help. Even the rice that came with was awful - sticky, odd looking and ZERO flavor. The refried beans (which I didn't try) looked like cafeteria food....a bunch of paste. I had three quesadillas on my plate when I was starving, finished one and a half of them, barely. I paid nearly $40 for two meals, three drinks, plus tip....this was way worse than Taco Bell. In fact I would have rather saved $30 and gone to TB. No way will I go back to this restaurant.

Cinco de mayo, I'm Mexican I want some Mexican food!! I've been here quite a few times but every time I go there the service is terrible!!!!! Not just the service but also our food!! Today we ordered a couple of cocktails which are good but our food, 5 of us, comes out 1 at a time!! The beans are cold, rice has no flavor!!! My enchiladas are bare, I ordered cheese w/ onions, the cheese is not melted! My daughters steak is over cooked & super thin!! I ask to talk to owner, I'm waiting 10 minutes, I go to bar & ask for owner. She comes to my table & tells me not to pay for anything!! I say that I'll pay for the drinks & my hubby's meal but the rest is terrible!! Her daughter, or waitress or both, says that every time I come in I complain!! My daughter says to her "don't you dare disrespect my mother that way". I walk up to the bar, throw $40 on the bar!! NEVER will I be back!! If you want good service & food go elsewhere!! They are terrible!!! Never again

Not good anymore. The new owners are in trouble and I think this place will be no more very soon. We got there around 11:45 and the place was empty. We left an hour later and no one had come to eat. This is Sunday at lunch, but I would still expect to see someone. The changed the chips which were not nearly as good as when Rueben ran the place. The killer margaritas were not killer anymore. The refried beans were very soupy and had no flavor. The chile rellenos were terrible. Extremely greasy. We brought a by one lunch get one lunch free coupons that had no stipulations on it and they would not honor it. Like I stated above El Somberito will be no more soon enough.

Im from LA so I know Mexican restraints. I was disappointed. We ended up being the only people in the whole place. I got a burrito that costed $9 and not worth it. Lots of food, but no flavor. My grandma whom I was with got a beef taco salad and they forgot the beef. Over all I'd say only eat here if your starving.....even taco bell is better then this dirty whole in the wall joint.

This used to be our favorite "hole-in-the-wall" Mexican restaurant. Not so much anymore... When we walked in, we greeted in a friendly way, but it was very unclear who worked there and who were other guests. There were two televisions on, and a young girl of about 11 or 12 sitting alone in a booth watching one of them. The other was tuned to a Spanish station and there were a couple tables pushed together with a large-ish family watching that screen. We were told to sit wherever we wanted, but it seemed as though wherever we sat, we'd be interrupting something, so we chose a table in the back corner near the kitchen. The bartender - I think - asked us if we wanted drinks. We ordered drinks, and we had to repeat the order several times, not because of a language barrier, but because his attention kept wandering. At this point I realized that whatever the little girl was watching on TV was NOT appropriate for a restaurant dining room, because one of the characters literally said, "It's like getting diarrhea from bad food! I'm gagging!" So THAT was a nice accompaniment! I asked if the guacamole could be made without cilantro and he said yes, it was made fresh. I asked for an order of that with our drinks. He came back to ask me if I wanted my Coke from a bottle or "the other" - I assume he meant fountain? I said either was fine. We were served a very small basket of chips with a bowl of salsa. The chips were thin, cold and unsalted. We had some menu questions, but the guy didn't know any of the answers, so he kept going back to ask the kitchen. Eventually, we got answers, and then a young woman we had not yet seen came to our table and asked what we wanted to order. After she took our orders, she pretty much vanished. After several minutes, I went to the bar to ask about my guacamole order. The bartender said he didn't know I was ordering it, just asking about it, but hurried into the kitchen. Several minutes after THAT, the young girl came out to ask if we wanted refills on our long-empty drinks. We said yes and asked about the guacamole. She said it had been ordered. After dropping off our drinks, she asked if we wanted to guacamole now, or with our dinner. When we said we wanted before our dinner, she went and got it. The guacamole came on a plate with about ten chips. It wasn't horrible, but it was mostly onions with a little avocado holding them together. We were not offered more chips. Our dinners - a chili rellenos burrito and an order of cheese flautas - were tasty, but the rice was flavorless. As we were eating another couple came in and was seated, at which point the little girl finally changed the channel of the one TV to a movie - which was ALSO very inappropriate, with a lot of profanity. The other people in the restaurant appeared to be family of the owner or staff, as they kept getting up, going outside, wandering around, coming back in, going into the kitchen and generally acting as though the restaurant dining room was their living room. My husband and I very much felt as though we had crashed a private family party and were a big inconvenience to the staff. The young lady who served us, and the hapless bartender, were both friendly and cheerful, but still made us feel as though we were interrupting their evening. The other couple who were there eating seemed just as uncomfortable as we were, especially with the loud TV and its very un-PG-13 movie playing right over their heads. After more than 20 years of going to this restaurant a couple times a year, we will NOT be returning.

I was surprsied to see some of the other reviews about this place as my friends and I came here from Chicago and we had an absolute blast!!! We had made a reservation ahead of time so we sat right down when we walked in. Chips and salsa are amazing....seriously, best chips I've ever had, food was really good. Their margaritas will knock you on your butt....they are really good and strong. There's all sorts of fun decorations too, very fun atmosphere...would definitely go back. To top it off, the owner made an appearance and got us a round of shots which I thought went the extra mile....really good service.

I had been here before several years ago- about 8 and thought it was decent. A little hole in the wall but with good food. Decided to bring my husband tonight and worst mistake ever! To start off, you walk in and it smells like sewage(maybe a problem with the city? Not sure but it's definitely not appetizing). It's unclear if you are supposed to seat yourself or what because nobody greets you. We stood there for about 5 minutes, then sat ourselves. There were two tables with people- 3 other tables had not been cleared off yet (and were not cleared off the entire time we were there). The chips and salsa are ok. We were given enough salsa for about half the basket of chips- our waitress brought the chips after she brought our drinks and we ordered so she never stopped by our table to check on us until she brought the food. When we sat down she asked if we wanted drinks we were not sure what we wanted so she said shed give us a minute(turned into another 5) however, there is no drink menu so we had no idea what they had or if there were specials or anything. When she came back she told us they have beer and margaritas and "some drinks". We ordered a half pitcher of margarita and after drinking the pitcher, we couldn't tell there was any alcohol in it. My husband order a chicken burrito grande and i ordered steak fajitas that the menu stated came with onions and red, green and yellow peppers. When the fajitas came, they actually came with steak, four strips of red peppers and a few onions. I will say the fajitas tasted decent (the meat) which is why I gave the place two stars. My husbands burrito was disgusting. It came with a weird watery red sauce and literally you could squeeze the shredded chicken and water came out. Very bland with little flavor. Once we asked for our check, that took about 10 min as well. Our final bill was $50.60. Definitely not worth it. The decor doesnt matter much to me but just to mention- its a bunch of random crap thrown all over the place. We will never come back here.

Had this food at a summer festival and liked it. Went to the restaurant and shocked. Everything tasted the same. Burrito, Taco, Chili Relanos. Chicken or beef. Couldn't tell the difference. All looked like dog food and the dog food would have had more flavor. Keep driving.

On a side note, I think I should mention that I have friends who love this place. So I suppose it's possible that I may have gotten a bad egg...

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
