Yelp is right again! Rock star chicken! Great service.. Andrew was tending bar tonight and friendly enough to make me feel welcome into the group of locals that frequent the establishment. You don't usually find that type of service around the area. Beans were great as was the slaw. Got to love this app, I rely on it when traveling and got to say it is 99 percent accurate. Highly recommend this establishment for great food and friendly staff. Beer was ice cold as well. I will be back!

This was a fun little outing with friends after a late night and not much sleep.. It's kinda a family restaurant meets sports bar! Each table had it's own TV! I didn't want any food, so it worked out that this is not a hot spot for Vegan Meals! I did enjoy a lot of coffee and got a virgin Bloody Mary.. AKA Spicy tomato juice with a kick and a pickle! It hit the spot! Our waitress was fantastic making sure our coffee's and waters were always filled, even bringing out a pot of coffee for the table! Nice and homey family style meals that are huge. The prices are great and the staff was amazing! I would go back for the atmosphere alone!

Chicken is very good, and the pork tenderloin is huge. I also liked the coleslaw. TV in the booth is handy to keep the kids occupied because it does take a little time to get your order due to them cooking everything from scratch.

Highly recommend the Big Jon Jr Burger. Awesome!!! Kind of a dive but the food and service make it totally worth it.

One of my favorite places to eat. It is in a bad part of Waterloo, but that does not stop me from coming here! My favorite item to get is the chicken dinner. You get 2 pieces of chicken, (you can get more), baked beans, a roll, and potatoes. All for only $8. Whenever I come, I usually do takeout, but the dining room has good service. They have classic dinner entrees that anybody should try, such as spaghetti and meatballs and subs. They are known for their breasted chicken however! For desert, they have pieces of carrot cake and chocolate cake. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick carry out meal or a sit down dining experience.

I wanted to love this place, service was super, atmosphere, family dining. A great selection on the menu, but food was average at best. We tried chicken wings, roast beef sandwich, hamburger and spaghetti.

Great prices and great food. Chicken is great, breakfast is great, regular menu is great. Not a big fan of the fish fry fish as the fish is very greasy and has an odd taste (we have tried it several times now). The staff is always friendly as well!

I've been going here for more than 30 years and each time the food I impeccable. Tried the chicken waffles for breakfast and was both surprised and impressed. You must also try the pork fritter, it is an original.

Was in the Waterloo area for business and wanted to find a local place with character. That is exactly what this place is. It's not sexy at all but it shouldn't be. It's a dive thats been here for 40-50 years filled with locals and solid food. Pros: The fried chicken and the baked beans are the truth. Overhearing the locals' conversations was even better. Cons: Chocolate cake would be better if they didn't pull it out of the fridge and hand it to you. Overall a classic spot with good greasy eats.

Good bar food, great bartender! Husband tried to start up a convo with we think the owner man, didn't really seem like talking to outsiders. But hey that's okay I guess.

Awesome food for breakfast, awesome friendly service, great bloody Mary's from their full bar. It was so good we ate there on our way out and way back during our trip. We even drove an extra 5 miles on way back thru Waterloo to eat here again!

My brother and I are road tripping to California from New Jersey seeing what the country has to offer. We checked yelp for some food near Waterloo, Iowa and Wishbone was the first option. They called themselves a broasted chicken place, which sparked our hunger, and had 5/5 stars so we we're definitely stopping there. The reviews are right when they say the outside is very middle America, small town restaurant. Don't let it fool you, though, it's much more when you get inside. I had the jumbo wings with buffalo sauce, which was good, and my brother had the BBQ pulled pork "sliders". I used quotations because they were the same size as any burger I've seen. It wasn't very expensive. That's coming from two kids driving across country trying to conserve cash. We recommend stopping here and getting the cheese fries, they were delicious! And don't worry if the waitress accidently adds bacon, it'll only make it better!

Was drawn to this place by the good reviews. It's a mystery too me how they obtained such great reviews. The dinning room was old and worn out, that's not a deal killer but the cleanliness was!

My favorite item on the menu is the Wishbone sub. It's delicious! I usually order my food for carry out. It's always done quickly and tastes awesome.

"Great" food for locals, or travelers with very low expectations. Couldn't even peice together a healthy lunch. Its glorified bar food, hope you like meat & high glycemic carbs, no veggies, iceberg salads.

We've been eating at Wishbone since the new management took over. It is a comfortable restaurant with good service and friendly staff. The food is delicious! The menu offers a wide range of choices, and my favorite so far has been the potato skins. Yummy! A great bonus is the fact that Wishbone has coupons in the weekly saver. That helps so much.

Thank you to the great staff! Brought in a group of 14 with motorhome and 5th wheel. Served us immediately. Breakfast was awesome! Friendly service, great food, and good prices.

AWESOME CHICKEN!! We went here because other Yelp reviewers gave it super high ratings. You're all right. I got the 2 piece dinner (a thigh and leg) and others at my table got wings and breasts. All of it was tender and piping hot! I really enjoyed the baked beans and coleslaw. The mashed potatoes are also pretty good, but I'd definitely try the beans because you get huge chunks of bacon. Everyone likes bacon :). Prices are very reasonable too! I was impressed and full. Spent under $10 per person including drinks.

I've been going to Wishbone since I was a kid. I love there subs and BBQ tenderloins. I was concerned when the original owners sold out but the new owners have made great improvements to the inside of the place. They kept a lot of the old favorites on the menu. I love this place!

While traveling from Mpls, MN to Chicago via Waterloo IA we decided to stop in Waterloo for lunch. We had no idea where to go so I looked for restaurants nearby on my Garmin GPS. There were about 5 listed restaurants in a short distance and by complete chance we chose The Wishbone Restaurant, 201 w. 18th street, Waterloo Iowa. We found the restaurant located in an industrial section of town about 6 blocks off hwy 218 on a corner. The current owner had owned it only for the past year and a half. The building appeared to have been around quite a few years and small sections may have been added-on over time. On a scale of 1 to 10, the outside looked about a 4, but cars were parked there and so we said "what the heck" and went in. The inside was basic small town restaurant; booths, tables, bar. Lighting was a little subdued and the space between tables was fine. Tableware and serving plates could be of better quality, plates were plastic and flatware was cheap flimsy metal where the fork tines are always bent. Overall ambience was small town, been around many years restaurant that somebody was trying to make a living out of in a very competitive business. Alysha was our waitress and though her response to my first question, "what's good here?" said "everything is good here", I could see by the sparkle in her eyes that at least in her opinion it truly was good! Alysha was in her early 20's and was highly enjoyable to talk with, she made our lunch special without doing anything special other than speaking with us like she really wanted to make sure her restaurant delivered on the promises she had made for it. The menu wasn't huge and we liked that because so often we find these small restaurants with a huge food selection and then everything is mediocre or worse because it is purchased, prepared, warmed up institutional food! The food we ate was truly homemade "from scratch" and just exactly what Alisha described it would be. More importantly we could tell by the food taste that the owner and cooks knew good tasting food themselves and knew how to prepare good tasting food! We ordered the broasted chicken, potatoe salad, baked beans and for dessert their homemade chocolate and carrot cake. The broasted chicken was the best we had ever eaten. Alysha said the chicken was unfrozen and hand dipped in their own batter in seasoned flour and broasted. The skin was golden brown and the coating was thin and crispy and crunched when you bit into it. The batter was spiced mildly but did not overpower. Even the wing meat was juicy and the batter was so delicious you ate all the crumbs on the plate that had fallen off. This place is where you eat chicken and walk out really happy about the food you just ate. The baked beans were also homemade and a deep, dark, thick, brown, sweet sauce with large chunks of thick sliced smoky bacon. These beans could have doubled as dessert they were so good. We bought 2 quarts to take home, they were that good. The potatoe salad was made with potatoes prepared in their kitchen, it was slightly sweet and though not exactly to my taste (made with Miracle Whip rather than mayonnaise), I could tell that it was good quality and prepared from scratch and most people would like their potatoe salad to taste that way. The dessert of carrot cake and chocolate cake was truly homemade and fresh. Bakery prepared cakes are always dry, the cake we ate was as moist as a homemade cake served freshly from the oven. Both frosting's, chocolate and cream cheese were favorable and again truly homemade. The chocolate cake was as good as any chocolate dessert I have eaten in a Morton's steakhouse, that is how good it was! The cost of this meal, $20 plus tip, outstanding!

Excellent fried chicken. Cooked fresh so give yourself a little extra time. Well priced. Clean bathrooms and free wifi. Don't be put off by sketchy exterior. Diamond in the rough.

Some of the best chicken in the city. For me it goes Wishbone, Popeyes, KFC in dead last!

I chose to eat at this restaurant for my birthday meal last night, after reading the reviews. I live in Waterloo and was tired of the same old places. I have driven by this place many times and always wondered if it was good. To me, the exterior decor never gave me much confidence that it was going to be good. When we entered I realized that it is kind of small inside, and most of the tables were full. The interior decor seemed sort of old and I almost decided to turn around and walk out as it is a "seat yourself" type and I wasn't sure how we would find space for our group of 6. It wasn't long before the waitress noticed my dilemma and worked out a solution that didn't really work well but was do-able. And shortly after that a few tables near us cleared out and the waitress actually moved more tables around to ensure that we had a better seating arrangement and were more comfortable. She was very accommodating, kind and friendly and made us feel welcomed. The menu is your typical American fare with many options and the prices were fair. ( our group of 6 ate very well for $80.00 including tip) I honestly wondered if the food would be good or if it would be like many of these type of places where they make a list of what should be on a typical diner menu but don't really know the art of making the fare. But i have to tell you, The food tasted AWESOME! The chicken was crispy and juicy and the sandwiches were thick and delicious! My son bit into his bacon cheeseburger and literally squealed with happiness! The cook knows what he is doing in the kitchen. The waitress kept our drinks refilled and was very friendly. All in all, we had a wonderful time and will definitely go back. So much so that my 14 year old was not satisfied with the tip my husband left (15%) and she left a 16 dollar tip on top of that! The one and only negative thing I do feel needs to be said is that the food is not exactly light. It is your loaded American fare. I'm sure the calories consumed were high. But they do offer salads too so you can eat lighter if you choose. For a great tasting meal with a friendly staff, I say we'll done, Wishbone!
