I've been a regular at Shogun since it opens. Great family feeling and very good Japanese food. Bento Boxes for lunch are a good deal. Sushi often top of the line. Service is kind and quick. Prices are right but remember lunch stops at 3pm. I've had better Japanese when I lived in CA both in the Bay area and in Garden Grove! But I have no complaints re Shogun.

They have a special price 3 sushi rolls for 10 dollars for lunch. The price is great the sushi is ok. I rate it 4 stars because the sushi is really good for the prices.

White Tuna was dry. And a little effort could of been done with crab. The most popular roll "most" people order is the Cali roll, they could of shredded it up instead of just dropping the stick on the nori.

It's a great statment about Ames that there are two very good Japanese restaurants to choose from. The one in east Ames has a lot of show, size and kitsch. And you pay for it. Shogun has really, really good Japanese food in a much simpler smaller and calmer atmosphere. Shogun delivers the same high quality goods for much less. The bento box here for example is $5 less than their cross town rival with similar portion sizes and satisfaction. I will be making regular visits to Shogun. I enjoyed the laid back, quiet atmosphere low prices and the superb product.

The service was slow, drinks were extremely flat, the restaurant had no ambiance and the sushi was not exceptional. I live right across the street, but I don't think I'll ever be going back.

Wish I could give minus star's I would. This was without a doubt the worst food I have ever had. What there was of shrimp was over cooked. The other food with it was tasteless. And what is with all of the fried battered vegetables!

After waiting a good ten minutes for the waitress to get my drink order i expected that the service might be somewhat slow. After another good ten minutes she came back to get my order. I ordered a Yummy Roll, which is a sushi roll containing BBQ eel, tempura shrimp, cucumber, cream cheese, and avocado on top. The meal came out in a nice presentation but tasted only adequate. If you're in the area and are craving some sushi Shogun Japanese Steak House is not your worst choice but if you are in a time crunch don't come service is very slow.

Great sushi, always enjoy coming here. But yes, don't come here if you're in a rush. Service is always slow. But they do offer carry out for their sushi which I frequent. I always recommend this place over Fuji.

Definitely the best sushi place in Ames, and has great pricing to boot. The service can be slow if it is very busy due to few staff, but be patient. It is worth the wait. The interior needs a little bit of design help, but I'm not here for the decor. Try the Crazy Roll, it will become your next favorite.

I agree completely with Douglas C. I came here to write a similar review, but he said it way better than I could. The only thing I could add though is that the mediocre sushi really kinda is their fault. There's several places in DM that have - in my opinion - excellent sushi: Waterfront, Appare, and my favorite Myobi 9. Just because they are in a slightly larger city and market than Ames doesn't mean they have different options for ordering their ingredients than Shogun does. There is one other thing I should say. The last time I was in the Chef was different than I knew from a year ago - some 19 year old Japanese kid. Now, I'm not saying that just because he's young he can't make good sushi, but he definitely wasn't as 'professional' as other older more respected sushi chefs. He was dressed in a t-shirt and jeans with a blue tooth in his ear. He was talking to someone the entire time he was making my food. I'd like to say this is a cultural thing, but I know it's not - it's an age and respect thing. Because he wasn't paying attention to making my food, he missed 1/4 of the order (It sure wasn't because it was busy as it was 4:30 in the afternoon and I was the only one there) . I didn't realize the mistake until I got home, and by that time it was too late to go back and get it fixed. I'm giving it two stars instead of one as I know working in the food industry can be a grueling and thankless job, and I don't think that 1 bad experience can justify a 1 star rating.

Shogun is a good choice if you're craving sushi on the west side of Ames and can't stomach buying it at HyVee (which I fully admit I've done in a particularly weak moment). It's on the small side, fairly quiet, and sparsely decorated. But the service is friendly, and their two-roll lunch special is slightly lower priced than Fuji's. Certainly not the best sushi I've ever had, and probably not even the best in Ames, but it's a step up from grocery store sushi and I'm sure I'll be back.

I walked in here with a serious sushi craving one day. It's one of two restaurants that serves sushi in Ames and I wanted to give it a try. I have to say it's nothing really special. The interior is cookie cutter for a sushi restaurant with nothing to really distinguish it in any way. It's not bad, but it's not great. The best thing I can say is that it has an entirely inoffensive atmosphere. The waitstaff were very kind, eager even, which is always nice. Service was quick, with no bumps. The sushi, however, wasn't particularly great. There are a million of these places around the world, and they crank out mediocre sushi one roll at a time. It's not their fault really, it's hard to get good ingredients out here, and if they did they'd have to charge a lot for it. As a result the tuna is grainy and flavorless, and the salmon is either mushy or gummy. It's definitely a place to get a California Roll or other ridiculously complicated order as the extra ingredients will cover up the sub-par seafood. Still, if you just want sushi, and don't want to pay a lot for it, it has its own niche market between HyVee and Fuji (which isn't much better and twice the price). I'll have to try their non-sushi menu and see how it stands up.
