Excellent place for families. Everything that I've had here is very tasty including their dashi (broth). My typical go-to's on the menu would have to be the curry udons or the mabo tofu. It's reasonably priced where you would be able to get a combo (main dish item, gyoza, and fried rice) for $10 or less. Service is excellent and the owners of the Kaneohe location is very friendly and personable. Food comes out fast (except for maybe the gyoza). They also do take-out although I have yet to try this option. Parking can sometimes be congested, especially during prime lunch and dinner hours.

Visit: 5/6/09 - Dinner. Chicken Katsu Curry. I have to vent. I just had the worst time at this place. I called in a to go order and when I arrived it was not ready. They told me to wait 15 minutes. So I said well I have nothing better to do. So I wait. 15 -20 minutes later they tell me sorry they are busy, please wait some more. Like a idiot I wait. Then they come out and ask me what I ordered. I told them to forget it and left. I will definately not come back here. Hopefully this was only a weird case that happened to me, but being on the receiving end of it really made me mad. I had been here before and they normally have okay chicken katsu curry. Don't eat the ramen. The soup is bland and noodles have a tough texture. Gyoza is okay here. Prices I find were above average. They don't give very big portions for the price you have to pay. For this review they deserve one star.

This place is the $h!t! I switch between three tried and true favorites: Seafood Ramen, Chicken Katsu Curry Udon, and the Mochiko Chicken Curry Combo. So mean! The food is great, the price is right, and they're open an hour later than almost everywhere else in Kaneohe that's not a Zippy's.

GREAT DEAL HERE. for 8 dollars i got the chicken katsu curry combo. it consisted of a bowl of ramen, about 5 gyoza, and also my plate of katsu curry. it was a heaping pile of curry after my gyoza and bowl. and it was deeeelightful. the food wasnt the greatest food on the planet, but for 8 dollars its awesome.

Secret Menu Item: the Spicy Mochiko Chicken Curry is not on any Sumo Ramen menu, but they will make here if you ask. The only other Sumo Ramen location that may prepare this elusive dish is at Market City. While the regular mochiko chicken curry is very good, the spicy is simply outstanding.

Wow, so many choices! I was so impressed with all the various ramens and curries to get. I finally decided on the Mochiko Chicken Curry Ramen and a side of gyoza. Both were great! I was really impressed with the amount of mochiko chicken I got. Great flavor. I think personally I like standard shoyu ramen and Japanese curry rather than combining them, but this was a good place to experiment and I'll be back for more mochiko chicken!

I really enjoy Sumo Ramen. Good place for Ramen and Curry. Prices are very reasonable especially the combos. My favorite is the Mochiko Chicken Curry Combo. It includes Mochiko Chicken with a side of Curry and Rice, Gyoza, and a bowl of Ramen. For $9.50 you can't go wrong. The staff is very friendly and will service you right away. They also take phone orders which makes it very convent for dinner :D. All in all a good place to eat if your in Kaneohe.

My husband loves mochiko chicken ramen so I tried for the first time. I was very disappointed w their soup. They used udon soup for ramen soup. Spicy beef both was cooked w star anise. It should not get used for Japanese ramen. The only thing good was gyoza.

We decided to get some ramen and curry to help battle this virus I have. I thought I would find some solace with ramen to soothe my throat. The ramen did soothe my throat but there was some issues with my curry and my gyoza. First of all, my spouse got his curry way ahead of mine. His came out nice and hot, and I had to wait for mine. When I got mine, it was rather cold. It didn't make sense to me as to why I waited much longer and the curry came out much colder. ...then it got "better". I had shared some food with my spouse and other family members. My child was eating her way through a gyoza and low and behold a long piece of hair. I was completely disgusted and ready to walk out of the door. The waitress apologized and we waited awhile to get those replaced, and by the time they were replaced, we were almost done with our meals. Needless to say, we didn't finish them, nor did I want to. After all was said and done, all we got was the apology, nothing taken off the bill.... I don't foresee us coming back here!

I have always been a fan of Sumo Ramen! My family are regular customer with our usuals. We really like the beef curry, mochiko chicken curry, chicken katsu curry, cold somen, cold soba, etc! However they unfortunately lost a star from me. NEVER GET SHRIMP TEMPURA!!!!! I was so disappointed. I don't know if it's always terrible or if it was just that one day but the shrimp tempura had so much over cooked/fried batter and super tiny shrimp (like shrimp cocktail kine shrimp). All it tasted like fried oil and batter. I even took a photos! Disappointed

I love the chicken curry combo.. Comes with the gyoza and noodles.. I usually come here because my husband loves it so much however I cannot complain about the quality of the food or the cost. It's also very convenient because we usually call for takeout and our whole order is usually ready no longer than 10 minutes! ~ which for us is simply the drive over.. We go in to pick it up, pay and walk out. Super fast, super convenient. And for the past several months at the least they have been boxing it up and using masking tape to keep all your items secure for the drive. I personally really appreciate this, especially when I'm the only one picking it up with no one to baby the package if you know what I mean. Lol even not driving crazy that stuff especially the curry can make a giant mess if you go around a corner just a little bit too fast (for the food to sit still) or have to put the breaks on hard because someone is driving like an idiot in front of you.. Anyways, I like this place. It's pretty good. Get the gyoza if it doesn't come with your dish. It really is pretty good especially with the sauce k shoots!

Our first time going to this place I should say, "Horrible, Not so good!" The service is terrible and the wasn't that memorable. I forgotten to put that I've ordered Shrimp Tempura with curry combo, the batter of the shrimp was TOO much batter and ramen was alright nothing special! Especially, when I ask for more Tea they haven't given it to me, so I just one star off! Thumbs DOWN!!

Love this place! Black pepper noodles awesome! I changed it up and added chicken it was really really good.Service is kind of slow but they're very very busy, every chair is full they must be doing something right. I changed it up and had chicken told him I did not want beef. They were real accommodating. The portion is huge! This is a good lil ramen shop. It's tried and true since high school for me and I want to share my latest experience that made me even more of a fan. I went here with my dad & sister one afternoon recently and there was nobody in the restaurant. My family ordered first and I did my usual "I'm vegan, what the heck can I eat here?" line of questioning. The server did ask me what does vegan mean, which I was happy to explain (but I do think that in this day and age, restaurants should be educating their staff on different dietary needs and restrictions). After I explained it, he suggested veggie rolls and croquette. I said that sounds good! When our food came, I realized that I was son hungry, I forgot to ask if there was egg in any of the items I ordered. He said he was so sorry but there may be egg in the batter for the croquette. He said he felt bad that I ordered something I couldn't eat. I said it's okay, I could just take it home for my husband who would definitely eat it. He offered me a veggie ramen which would have no noodles, just a bunch of fresh vegetables in soup water! He said that normally, the soup base has animal products in it so he will make it without that base. At first, I declined, not wanting to create more work and trouble, but he said my family is eating so I should have something to eat with them. I was so thankful for his consideration and understanding of a problem that wasn't even a problem! I didn't get his name, but that server is a shining example of great customer service and the reason I will continue to return to this location.

This place is SOOOO freaken ONOLISCIOUS! Everytime I go back home, about several times a year I use to eat at the one that use to be down the street Makakilo. Well they close that place a few years ago and I was like freaken out. I've tried literally 95% of everything on the menu and would always order more than 60 bucks worth. Well my sister in-law said this one was open so now when I go home, either me or my family makes the trip down. My favorite is the garlic chicken wings! Dam Bomb! And of course I love the fried rice and that I'm super picky about. The croquettes are soo good too. My dad loves the fried rice, but always blows up and gets swollen. I told him that's how you know it's good food, when it's seasoned like it should be! He still eats it because it's worth the onoliscious flavors. It's not expensive at all and you get hug portions. My hubby too, who's full on Buddah Head "my grampa called him" but he's from the mainland, loves the Ramen here. Everything is sooo good and I can't wait to go back home again this thanksgiving, cuz I'm gonna order a tray of the chicken wings, freeze them and take it back to CO with me. I do that with All the food I like, which takes up a whole suitecase in itself. SOOO worth it!! This place is AS GOOD AS IT GET"S! Mainland ain't got noting on this place, even if they are Japanese owned, like in Denver.

We had lunch today at Sumo Ramen and Curry near Windward Mall. The food was great. I enjoyed their Chicken Katsu Curry and Ramen combo. The service impressed me today as the waiter took orders, brought out the food, filled glasses with water, and answered the phone taking orders. The restaurant was busy with this one person doing it all. He was pleasant doing this today where the weather was hot and humid outside. Would I recommend this place to my family and friends? The answer is...yes.

Food is below average. Got gyoza and chicken platter, which were bland and boring. Customer service is also lacking. The guy that works here doesn't smile or greet you when you enter...he just stands there in front of the cashier and stares at you while he waits for you to order. Will never come back here again.

My husband and I love to eat at Sumo especially on cold rainy nights since we live in Kaneohe. We came here tonight because I just had a root canal done and wanted something nice and soft to eat. It was perfect. Great service and great ramen. My favorite is the Mochiko Chicken Ramen with a side order Gyoza and my husband likes the Char Sui Ramen or Won Ton Ramen. Their Mochiko chicken plate is good also and their Mac salad is one of the best on this side of the island. This is one of our go to places when we can't decide what we want to eat.

Dined here for lunch on 7/28/13. I had the seafood ramen,fried rice, and gyoza combo. First off, I would like to say that this place seems way better than the Sumo Ramen at Pearl Highlands. For one, the portions are bigger. Also, since it's not located in a food court like the one at Pearl Highlands, I actually got to sit in a booth with a nice cushiony seat. Like I said, I ordered the seafood ramen combo. Overall it was very delicious. The seafood ramen was great, with generous portions and the soup being very tasty. The fried rice was good, but I think the fried rice from ezogiku is better. But I can honestly say that the fried rice here, is still.pretty good. The gyoza is also good, but I wish they were a little bigger. Size aside the gyoza is very tasty. Overall, a very positive experience and if i'm ever in Kaneohe again, I would definitely come back here again. Highly recommended.

I love their miso udon soup and my son loves their chicken katsu! It's a convenient stop after school during week days. Quick in and out the door. Service is fast and price is awesome. Better alternative than McDonald!

Jan 28 2014 Still a favorite go to when short on time, or money. The last year and a half they have really improved from what I belive was different owners. A younger couple with young son now seem to own it. I really enjoy the place again. I wrote tough reviews on them in the past a few years back, but they have climbed back to the top again!!! I have noticed when eating in they do a lot of large order take outs.

Came for lunch around 3pm and we haven't been here for a while but their food was always good to me. This time when we walked in it was empty and we were the only ones that were dining in the whole time we were there. We were greeted and taken cared of right away and our water came soon after. I noticed they had a bit of remodeling work done with a new bar and brand new chairs and tables. They also took down all the pictures of the sumo wrestlers. We ordered our food and received it within 10 minutes. I had the shrimp tempura udon with a side of tako yaki balls and my bf had the mabo tofu ramen combo that came with fried rice and gyoza. Everything tasted great! Tako yaki balls topped it off. Always had a good experience here with good service and food.

My bf and I came in on a busy night, and we got seated right away at the bar. A good start since I usually don't mind not sitting at a table. But then.... This bar had no leg room! We had to angle our bodies away from the table, which became more and more uncomfortable throughout the meal. At least there were cute fish to watch in the aquarium. Since I often get chicken katsu curry from Ayame's (much better than here and practically the same menu), I decided to try something different. I got the mini mochiko chicken curry, which was starred as a favorite at this restaurant. I was expecting good stuff since it's a recommended item. However! My chicken was rubbery, like they were leftovers from yesterday and reheated in the microwave. I ate maybe 3 or 4 pieces and decided I wouldn't finish it. My bf got chicken katsu curry and gyoza, which he enjoyed. The service was pretty good. I'd say that was the redeeming quality of this restaurant for this last visit. The sumo pictures on the wall are entertaining and fits the name of the restaurant, but it makes for a weird vibe. I kind of feel like I'm eating in a restaurant frequented for take-out and not dine-in.

Had the Mapo Tofu Ramen combo and the ramen was really salty but ate it with the fried rice and that made it better. Wifey had the Tonkotsu and it was just ok. Had it way better at other places. Because of where we were sitting on the counter, we could see into the kitchen and noticed how the 2 young cooks kept on touching and flipping their hair. They had very long Justin Beber type hair with NO covering at all. NICE! Also the waiter and waitress touching everything and I do mean everything and not washing hands before handling food and drinks. The worse part of it all was as we were leaving we got up from the counter and there was a HUGE roach on the wall (see my picture that I posted). My wife is horrified by roaches so her reaction was alarming. She all of a sudden was grossed out and was on the verge of puking. Never again!

Me and my friends should stop going to Windward Mall to shop cause we always end up finding the weirdest places to eat. Damn us for getting hungry hahaha. I saw this place at Kam Shopping Center as well and wanted to try it then with my friend. So the food here seems very similar to some fast foods I've tried at other places. But I was hungry and didn't care. The price was affordable so bleh. I wouldn't say that I would come back however. I got the tempura udon and although I liked my crunchy foods... the udon soup base was ew. But, I've tasted worse. Tried this place once, and it was alrighttt.

We were hungry when we got to Windward mall. So we picked this place out of all the other restaurants there. We were kinda skeptical about it because it was empty. But the food looked good so we went in. I got the plate with mochiko chicken. My friends got the tempura and udon and curry ramen. I thought my plate seem like L&L meal plate. So nothing different there. My friend said the curry ramen was good with the mochiko chicken. My other friend that got the udon didn't like the soup with the noodles. It was pretty filling though. I guess this place is same as the others..I don't see it specially different. Must be the name that makes it different. There were picture strip with sumo along the walls. Haha.

Weird atmosphere...BUT this place totally changed my opinion of local curry / katsu grinz kine places...I just may have to be more open minded in the future! Husband got the mochiko chicken curry combo and I ordered the the chicken katsu no combo....WHOA! HUGE plate of the best katsu I have ever had. I sorta gave up on katsu years ago.... OMG super good curry sauce to swipe the chicken thru...but waaaay to much..no way can eat all that curry sauce. The katsu sauce was unlike any I have ever had. I remember it always just sorta tasted like ketchup and worchester sauce...NOT this! YUM. Update! Been back 2 times since the above review... katsu can be hit or miss...but when its a hit.... ITS A HIT!

WARNING: this is going to be a LONG REVIEW. be patient, read through, and you'll be glad you did. i've only noticed this place recently as we have been patronizing the nearby Kaneohe Petco to get supplies for my Kidlets' aquarium. my husband has been here before with his son, and they always raved about it. lots of parking in the parking lot, no problem there...we walk inside, and seat ourselves. the place is crowded. so far, so good. then...we wait about 7 minutes just to get a menu. before they arrived with a pair of menus, i had spotted a take out menu on the podium, and asked hubby to get it. i decided what i was going to get before they even arrived with the proper menus. tsk-tsk. however, once we ordered, the food came out fast! hubby ordered Beef Stew Curry Ramen Combo, and i ordered the Mochiko Chicken Curry Ramen combo, both priced at $9.50, which i think is quite a deal. two bowls of ramen, with a large piece of beef and kamaboko inside...tasty broth and perfect noodles arrived soon after ordering. then the second part came, the curry rice part of the combo. as we dug into the ramen, the last part of the meal came, a plate of 4 gyoza, lightly fried. what a deal! my Mochiko Chicken curry was pretty good, except for some crunchy rice. the gyoza was delicate and tasty...all in all, this place was going to get a great review despite the menu neglect in the beginning of this experience, because once that speed bump was behind us, the service was fast and friendly. the woman next to us had a tasty looking meal too, and i kept glancing over at what she was eating. she was with her young grandchild, who had become bored and fidgety over the course of the meal. she had gotten to the point where she was having to scold the child for getting out of the seat and wandering around, but something happened next that ensured the child would be staying in her seat. i heard the woman exclaim something like "oh my god, is that a mouse?" i looked over at her, and she was looking at me as if she wanted me to confirm that she wasn't seeing things. the table next to her, on the opposite side of us, housed a small mouse that was scurrying to and fro beneath it. "oh my, you're right!" i said, "there it is!" now, the worst part, is not only that there are pests running about in an establishment that we're eating at, but the way the manager treated the woman after she complained to him that there was a mouse running about. he was prepared to move her table. WAIT, WHAT? he's going to move her table? as far as she was concerned, she was DONE WITH EATING. she informed him that that was a Health Department violation, and the man, instead of accepting responsibilty, began ARGUING with her! "i have lots of mice at my house!' (YES, he ACTUALLY SAID THAT), "we cannot get rid of all the mice," "we set traps and they run next door and then come back" were amongst some of the choice gems he was telling her. he was acting like he was angry that she was disgusted that there were vermin crawling around in a FOOD ESTABLISHMENT! i got pissed off, and while i was still shoveling the tasty food down my gob, i told him to "STOP ARGUING WITH HER! YOU"RE IN THE WRONG!" he said nothing much to me. i went outside to send the woman the video i took of the mouse running about, and while i was outside, my husband also told the man, "don't argue with those two, you're in the wrong, it's a health violation" (not to mention the fact that my husband knows what would happen if the man angered me any further). so, the manager comped her meal, and our meal, and as we left, we saw the manager heading off to Kaneohe Safeway...presumably to buy rat poison. to see the video of the mouse, copy and paste. youtube.com/watch?v=B51P… so...beware.

People just shouldn't expect so much if it's not a pricey place. This isn't a gourmet restaurant. Very simple restaurant - very simple curry, ramen, fried rice, and gyoza. My husband and I go and spend about $20 for a meal with all of the above. Just get a nice combo meal that comes with three of the above and a side of the fourth. I am not a complicated person - ramen's a ramen, it ain't your french onion soup with melted brie on top. You order what you get peeps - don't complain about it, enjoy it. Service is good, and people are right, you don't get the food in the order that you necessarily order, but if you are such a stickler on that go to the cheesecake factory.

Saturday night, I was foraging for food in Kaneohe with a slightly unsettled stomach, and settled here. I ordered the cold udon, which came on a tray with a separate bowl of cold sauce and some wasabi on the side. Honestly I wasn't expecting much - basically, I was expecting something to fill and settle my stomach, which it did. The portion was fairly small, but at the moment was what I needed. Props, though, to the wait staff for easing me out of what may have been an awkward situation. Having only a limited amount of small bills on me, not wanting to break a large bill, and aware that some places have minimums on use of plastic, I ventured to ask, and they reassured me that all was well (their minimum on plastic is $5 - which a normal meal should fulfill). So I left with a stomach that felt better and with enough energy to handle what turned out to be an exciting night.

Great value for decent food. Nothing too fancy but if you're craving some (very sweet) Japanese style curry for under $10-- here's where you should go. Heed this warning though... Carbs + sodium make for a very uncomfortable post-meal.

Got the Chicken Katsu Ramen combo --not bad. The chicken was okay, but the soup broth was excellent! The gyoza is very small, but well cooked and delicious. Last week, we had Ramen Ya in Hawaii'kai and it was not nearly as good, so all in all it's quite enjoyable enough for this howlie tourist. ;-P

Weird to read other reviews of Sumo because my experience was totally different. The gyoza tasted like it was homemade, not previously frozen. My curry was way better than Curry House and the portion was more than generous. The wait was not long for either item. Also the drinks are HUGE. Reasonably priced as well. No complaints here, I'll definitely go back.

1st time to Sumo tonight. I did not like it too much. The ramen had too much bean sprouts and it tasted weird like they didn't wash the sprouts good or the dish had some detergent residue. The tako yaki was not good at all. The authentic tako yaki are not deep fried looking. I would not go back.

Such a let down!!! One day after work I was craving a won ton ramen. I work at windward city and I always go to ayame for my ramen but I decided to try somewhere different so I chose sumo ramen. The best way to describe my meal was gloop..there were a lot of wonton floating around in my soup which was great but I had to hunt and hunt for my noodle. It's pretty sad when the meat inside the won ton is so small you can't tell if you're eating meat or the won ton wrapper. The meat was smaller than a dime! I know there are cutbacks and things are more expensive now days but that's drastic. I love noodles and ill eat almost any type but that meal killed my appetite. Also my "shoyu" broth had an overpowering taste of ginger in it. Thats a first for me. I'm not sure if that's how they make it or it was an off day but I'm just glad my boyfriend didn't order with me that day because he's allergic!! I'm giving two stars only because on a previous visit I placed a takeout order and had to wait a while so a worker gave me a free fruit punch to drink while i waited. That was nice.

Delicious! I had the Katsu spam curry and rice. My brother had the curry ramen and my parents had the corn ramen. Definitely got lucky stopping by this place before heading over to the museum down the street. The food was great and satisfied all of us for a very decent price (as we had been eating overpriced food from downtown Honolulu for the past few days). Would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. Theres no bathroom though so if you have to go, you'll have to visit the Starbucks next door which it didnt seem like anyone cared if you used them just for that :)

Imagine you are at Sonic, confronted by over a thousand flavor combinations to put into your shake. Then imagine that shake is ramen noodles. You are now at Sumo Ramen. I stepped into the zone, the Sumo Ramen zone that is, and I immediately regretted it. Every chair had a patron, and there was a standing line for pickup orders. There was only one server for the twenty patrons sitting down and the three people waiting for pickup. Before she seated me, I ordered, thinking it would take for ever. WRONG. In two minutes, my seafood ramen was sitting in front of me, looking delicious. "Isn't it fast?" my server asked me. I nodded in agreement, as I had already begun inhaling the soft noodles and giant chunks of squid and shrimp swimming in my 10 inch, $7 bowl of heaven.

Sorry but just not a huge fan. The only thing I really enjoy from here is the Gyoza and the service. It's the most tastiest thing I've eaten here.... And trust me I've eaten here too many times considering that I don't like it. But since it used to be the only ramen place in Kaneohe that was close to where I live, it became our only choice for gyoza and ramen. I've tried several different ramens and i have always walked away non impressed. It was always more on the bland side-especially the shoyu ramen that comes with the sets. I actually prefer packaged sapporo ramen to their shoyu ramen broth. My husband enjoys the Katsu curry from here but since he ain't doing this review they still get only 1 star. the sheer thought of it makes me hungry... the oyster curry: 5 crispy pieces of deep fried oysters, accompanied with rice and japanese curry, smothered with pickled veggies and a sprinkling of chili powder... i am in heaven. soooo good! the oysters are so juicy and jam packed with oyster-y goodness. mmm. i love their curry! really good portions too. trust me, this is definitely something you want to try.

We are regulars here! This is the only restaurant we consistently turn to. Yummy food for cheap just can't be beat. Service is always fast and friendly. I'm not sure how much the people who are complaining about small portions eat! My boyfriend (6' 2" and 260 pounds) and I SPLIT a combo meal for our dinner. A bowl of noodles, plate of gyoza and chicken katsu curry is our "usual" and if we are super hungry, we order an appetiser of mochiko chicken. If you're looking for an all-you-can-eat trough of food for $8 go to Las Vegas.

Best ramen place on the windward side hands down! The workers are friendly and always greet you when you come in. The restaurant is always clean and they have their own bathroom for customers. The food is always great. I always get the chicken curry combo. They make the food quickly so there isn't ever a long wait. The best part about this place is its super inexpensive and the portions are large. Best deal for your dollar. This place does get busy on the weekends and during dinner time and the parking is can get kind of tight. When did does get busy you can always call in your order too.

Lol I'm biased here. I used to work here and I have a couple of friends who still work there... It is the original Sumo Ramen and the absolute best one! I know, because I've tried the one at Pearl Highlands on several occasions as well as the one at the Kamehameha Shopping Center... no comparison. Despite all the inner-drama, the food is good. The only downfall is that they don't make their own croquette anymore, which was so good but I guess it wasn't cost-effective. The price is good and great for the locals who don't need all the glitzes of fancy dining. There's also a spicy garlic chicken that's super good. Their gyoza is tasty as well. Ramen is ramen, and the udon is store-bought and sold at any Daiei -- sorry, Don Quijote =P Ramen is ramen, cold noodle is the same... They do give a good amount of vegetables. Their sumo ramen consists of: double noodles, corn, menma, won bok, bean sprouts, wakame, egg, and chicken katsu (I might be missing some, it's been a while). Finally, they have stir-fry dishes. My favorite is the spicy beef fried noodles with chicken instead (just a little healthier lol). The curry fried rice is very good too! I'll tell you this much: I saw what the kitchen did and I would STILL eat there! (I can almost guarantee they don't do any "Waiting..."-type of things back there lmao -- well, except once, where the cook dropped a fried chicken on the ground and picked it up and tried to serve it but too bad the customer saw and complained... just that once though i swear) It would be 5 stars if I was still there =P or if they sold alcohol (but they rely on high turnovers and alcohol makes you linger although it is BYOB). I hear there are other better ramen places. One in particular is somewhere in Kapahulu I think?? After I try a few more places I'll let you know.

I'm a townie and had a fab day in Kaneohe. Decided to take the family to eat dinner at Sumo Ramen and Curry. BIG MISTAKE!!! Waste of money ($45+) I ordered the spicy seafood ramen combo. Seafood was fresh but the soup was bland, the noodles mediocre. Not spicy enough for me so I added sricha sauce and shoyu. Of course, this made the soup cold. The gyoza was the tiniest gyoza I've ever seen and eaten. The fried rice was cold and bland as well. My husband ordered the mapo tofu ramen. Same thing, soup was bland and not spicy as promised. Added the condiments again, and the "broth" got cold. Had to ask for the pickles and ginger. Heading back home, our son and daughter informed us the curry sauce tasted a little sour to them. My son had the chicken katsu curry rice and my daughter had the crotoquette curry. They told us they thought that's how the curry was supposed to taste like. Should have asked why they didn't finisher their food. Shame on them for serving old food to kids. Plus side: My children loved the fried food. Our server was attentive. NEVER AGAIN!

having been to multiple "real" ramen shops, this place was a disappointment. while it may look good and shiny on the outside - the food completely lacks flavor. the curry ramen has way too much vegetable filler and the curry in this dish is very watery and tasteless. i guess they're trying to make it stretch or something b/c i've had better curry udon at Curry House. the regular ramen broths are just as bland and tasteless. the gyoza is typical - previously frozen, commercially made gyoza. at first i thought this was based on location - but i've tried three different Sumo Ramen's around the island... and they're all the same BLAND food. i can probably make better ramen using a package of Sapporo Ichiban and leftover scraps in my own kitchen.

This is a good lil ramen shop. It's tried and true since high school for me and I want to share my latest experience that made me even more of a fan. I went here with my dad & sister one afternoon recently and there was nobody in the restaurant. My family ordered first and I did my usual "I'm vegan, what the heck can I eat here?" line of questioning. The server did ask me what does vegan mean, which I was happy to explain (but I do think that in this day and age, restaurants should be educating their staff on different dietary needs and restrictions). After I explained it, he suggested veggie rolls and croquette. I said that sounds good! When our food came, I realized that I was son hungry, I forgot to ask if there was egg in any of the items I ordered. He said he was so sorry but there may be egg in the batter for the croquette. He said he felt bad that I ordered something I couldn't eat. I said it's okay, I could just take it home for my husband who would definitely eat it. He offered me a veggie ramen which would have no noodles, just a bunch of fresh vegetables in soup water! He said that normally, the soup base has animal products in it so he will make it without that base. At first, I declined, not wanting to create more work and trouble, but he said my family is eating so I should have something to eat with them. I was so thankful for his consideration and understanding of a problem that wasn't even a problem! I didn't get his name, but that server is a shining example of great customer service and the reason I will continue to return to this location.

This place is SOOOO freaken ONOLISCIOUS! Everytime I go back home, about several times a year I use to eat at the one that use to be down the street Makakilo. Well they close that place a few years ago and I was like freaken out. I've tried literally 95% of everything on the menu and would always order more than 60 bucks worth. Well my sister in-law said this one was open so now when I go home, either me or my family makes the trip down. My favorite is the garlic chicken wings! Dam Bomb! And of course I love the fried rice and that I'm super picky about. The croquettes are soo good too. My dad loves the fried rice, but always blows up and gets swollen. I told him that's how you know it's good food, when it's seasoned like it should be! He still eats it because it's worth the onoliscious flavors. It's not expensive at all and you get hug portions. My hubby too, who's full on Buddah Head "my grampa called him" but he's from the mainland, loves the Ramen here. Everything is sooo good and I can't wait to go back home again this thanksgiving, cuz I'm gonna order a tray of the chicken wings, freeze them and take it back to CO with me. I do that with All the food I like, which takes up a whole suitecase in itself. SOOO worth it!! This place is AS GOOD AS IT GET"S! Mainland ain't got noting on this place, even if they are Japanese owned, like in Denver.

Excellent place for families. Everything that I've had here is very tasty including their dashi (broth). My typical go-to's on the menu would have to be the curry udons or the mabo tofu. It's reasonably priced where you would be able to get a combo (main dish item, gyoza, and fried rice) for $10 or less. Service is excellent and the owners of the Kaneohe location is very friendly and personable. Food comes out fast (except for maybe the gyoza). They also do take-out although I have yet to try this option. Parking can sometimes be congested, especially during prime lunch and dinner hours.

Secret Menu Item: the Spicy Mochiko Chicken Curry is not on any Sumo Ramen menu, but they will make here if you ask. The only other Sumo Ramen location that may prepare this elusive dish is at Market City. While the regular mochiko chicken curry is very good, the spicy is simply outstanding.

Wow, so many choices! I was so impressed with all the various ramens and curries to get. I finally decided on the Mochiko Chicken Curry Ramen and a side of gyoza. Both were great! I was really impressed with the amount of mochiko chicken I got. Great flavor. Weird to read other reviews of Sumo because my experience was totally different. The gyoza tasted like it was homemade, not previously frozen. My curry was way better than Curry House and the portion was more than generous. The wait was not long for either item. Also the drinks are HUGE. Reasonably priced as well. No complaints here, I'll definitely go back.

There were two of us at the table. By chance we each ordered the same thing - mabo tofu ramen. We both thought it was completely tasteless. Not even bland - it was tasteless. We put salt on it. Then chili powder. Finally shoyu helped. On the plus side, it was hot. Getting back to the negative side - the table had a funky smell, like it was wiped down with a dirty cloth. The condiment containers on the table were each lightly encrusted with a sticky grime. We know that because we had to touch each one to try to get some flavor into our ramen. Finally on my sad list of negatives, they did not have a bottle opener.

My husband and I love to eat at Sumo especially on cold rainy nights since we live in Kaneohe. We came here tonight because I just had a root canal done and wanted something nice and soft to eat. It was perfect. Great service and great ramen. My favorite is the Mochiko Chicken Ramen with a side order Gyoza and my husband likes the Char Sui Ramen or Won Ton Ramen. Their Mochiko chicken plate is good also and their Mac salad is one of the best on this side of the island. This is one of our go to places when we can't decide what we want to eat.

Dined here for lunch on 7/28/13. I had the seafood ramen,fried rice, and gyoza combo. First off, I would like to say that this place seems way better than the Sumo Ramen at Pearl Highlands. For one, the portions are bigger. Also, since it's not located in a food court like the one at Pearl Highlands, I actually got to sit in a booth with a nice cushiony seat. Like I said, I ordered the seafood ramen combo. Overall it was very delicious. The seafood ramen was great, with generous portions and the soup being very tasty. The fried rice was good, but I think the fried rice from ezogiku is better. But I can honestly say that the fried rice here, is still.pretty good. The gyoza is also good, but I wish they were a little bigger. Size aside the gyoza is very tasty. Overall, a very positive experience and if i'm ever in Kaneohe again, I would definitely come back here again. Highly recommended.

Came for lunch around 3pm and we haven't been here for a while but their food was always good to me. This time when we walked in it was empty and we were the only ones that were dining in the whole time we were there. We were greeted and taken cared of right away and our water came soon after. I noticed they had a bit of remodeling work done with a new bar and brand new chairs and tables. They also took down all the pictures of the sumo wrestlers. We ordered our food and received it within 10 minutes. I had the shrimp tempura udon with a side of tako yaki balls and my bf had the mabo tofu ramen combo that came with fried rice and gyoza. Everything tasted great! Tako yaki balls topped it off. Always had a good experience here with good service and food.

Weird atmosphere...BUT this place totally changed my opinion of local curry / katsu grinz kine places...I just may have to be more open minded in the future! Husband got the mochiko chicken curry combo and I ordered the the chicken katsu no combo....WHOA! HUGE plate of the best katsu I have ever had. I sorta gave up on katsu years ago.... OMG super good curry sauce to swipe the chicken thru...but waaaay to much..no way can eat all that curry sauce. The katsu sauce was unlike any I have ever had. I remember it always just sorta tasted like ketchup and worchester sauce...NOT this! YUM. Update! Been back 2 times since the above review... katsu can be hit or miss...but when its a hit.... People just shouldn't expect so much if it's not a pricey place. This isn't a gourmet restaurant. Very simple restaurant - very simple curry, ramen, fried rice, and gyoza. My husband and I go and spend about $20 for a meal with all of the above. Just get a nice combo meal that comes with three of the above and a side of the fourth. I am not a complicated person - ramen's a ramen, it ain't your french onion soup with melted brie on top. You order what you get peeps - don't complain about it, enjoy it. Service is good, and people are right, you don't get the food in the order that you necessarily order, but if you are such a stickler on that go to the cheesecake factory.

My bf and I came in on a busy night, and we got seated right away at the bar. A good start since I usually don't mind not sitting at a table. But then.... This bar had no leg room! We had to angle our bodies away from the table, which became more and more uncomfortable throughout the meal. At least there were cute fish to watch in the aquarium. Since I often get chicken katsu curry from Ayame's (much better than here and practically the same menu), I decided to try something different. I got the mini mochiko chicken curry, which was starred as a favorite at this restaurant. I was expecting good stuff since it's a recommended item. However! My chicken was rubbery, like they were leftovers from yesterday and reheated in the microwave. I ate maybe 3 or 4 pieces and decided I wouldn't finish it. My bf got chicken katsu curry and gyoza, which he enjoyed. The service was pretty good. I'd say that was the redeeming quality of this restaurant for this last visit. The sumo pictures on the wall are entertaining and fits the name of the restaurant, but it makes for a weird vibe. I kind of feel like I'm eating in a restaurant frequented for take-out and not dine-in.

Had the Mapo Tofu Ramen combo and the ramen was really salty but ate it with the fried rice and that made it better. Wifey had the Tonkotsu and it was just ok. Had it way better at other places. Because of where we were sitting on the counter, we could see into the kitchen and noticed how the 2 young cooks kept on touching and flipping their hair. They had very long Justin Beber type hair with NO covering at all. NICE! Also the waiter and waitress touching everything and I do mean everything and not washing hands before handling food and drinks. The worse part of it all was as we were leaving we got up from the counter and there was a HUGE roach on the wall (see my picture that I posted). My wife is horrified by roaches so her reaction was alarming. She all of a sudden was grossed out and was on the verge of puking. Never again!

We were hungry when we got to Windward mall. So we picked this place out of all the other restaurants there. We were kinda skeptical about it because it was empty. But the food looked good so we went in. I got the plate with mochiko chicken. My friends got the tempura and udon and curry ramen. I thought my plate seem like L&L meal plate. So nothing different there. My friend said the curry ramen was good with the mochiko chicken. My other friend that got the udon didn't like the soup with the noodles. It was pretty filling though. I guess this place is same as the others..I don't see it specially different. Must be the name that makes it different. There were picture strip with sumo along the walls. Haha.

I don't know if it's always terrible or if it was just that one day but the shrimp tempura had so much over cooked/fried batter and super tiny shrimp (like shrimp cocktail kine shrimp). All it tasted like fried oil and batter. I even took a photos! Disappointed

Saturday night, I was foraging for food in Kaneohe with a slightly unsettled stomach, and settled here. I ordered the cold udon, which came on a tray with a separate bowl of cold sauce and some wasabi on the side. Honestly I wasn't expecting much - basically, I was expecting something to fill and settle my stomach, which it did. The portion was fairly small, but at the moment was what I needed. Props, though, to the wait staff for easing me out of what may have been an awkward situation. Having only a limited amount of small bills on me, not wanting to break a large bill, and aware that some places have minimums on use of plastic, I ventured to ask, and they reassured me that all was well (their minimum on plastic is $5 - which a normal meal should fulfill). So I left with a stomach that felt better and with enough energy to handle what turned out to be an exciting night.

Great value for decent food. Nothing too fancy but if you're craving some (very sweet) Japanese style curry for under $10-- here's where you should go. Heed this warning though... Carbs + sodium make for a very uncomfortable post-meal.

Lol I'm biased here. I used to work here and I have a couple of friends who still work there... It is the original Sumo Ramen and the absolute best one! I know, because I've tried the one at Pearl Highlands on several occasions as well as the one at the Kamehameha Shopping Center... no comparison. Despite all the inner-drama, the food is good. The only downfall is that they don't make their own croquette anymore, which was so good but I guess it wasn't cost-effective. The price is good and great for the locals who don't need all the glitzes of fancy dining. There's also a spicy garlic chicken that's super good. Their gyoza is tasty as well. Ramen is ramen, and the udon is store-bought and sold at any Daiei -- sorry, Don Quijote =P Ramen is ramen, cold noodle is the same... They do give a good amount of vegetables. Their sumo ramen consists of: double noodles, corn, menma, won bok, bean sprouts, wakame, egg, and chicken katsu (I might be missing some, it's been a while). Finally, they have stir-fry dishes. My favorite is the spicy beef fried noodles with chicken instead (just a little healthier lol). The curry fried rice is very good too! I'll tell you this much: I saw what the kitchen did and I would STILL eat there! (I can almost guarantee they don't do any "Waiting..."-type of things back there lmao -- well, except once, where the cook dropped a fried chicken on the ground and picked it up and tried to serve it but too bad the customer saw and complained... just that once though i swear) It would be 5 stars if I was still there =P or if they sold alcohol (but they rely on high turnovers and alcohol makes you linger although it is BYOB). I hear there are other better ramen places. One in particular is somewhere in Kapahulu I think?? After I try a few more places I'll let you know.

We decided to get some ramen and curry to help battle this virus I have. I thought I would find some solace with ramen to soothe my throat. The ramen did soothe my throat but there was some issues with my curry and my gyoza. First of all, my spouse got his curry way ahead of mine. His came out nice and hot, and I had to wait for mine. When I got mine, it was rather cold. It didn't make sense to me as to why I waited much longer and the curry came out much colder. ...then it got "better". I had shared some food with my spouse and other family members. My child was eating her way through a gyoza and low and behold a long piece of hair. I was completely disgusted and ready to walk out of the door. The waitress apologized and we waited awhile to get those replaced, and by the time they were replaced, we were almost done with our meals. Needless to say, we didn't finish them, nor did I want to. After all was said and done, all we got was the apology, nothing taken off the bill.... I don't foresee us coming back here!

I love the chicken curry combo.. Comes with the gyoza and noodles.. I usually come here because my husband loves it so much however I cannot complain about the quality of the food or the cost. It's also very convenient because we usually call for takeout and our whole order is usually ready no longer than 10 minutes! ~ which for us is simply the drive over.. We go in to pick it up, pay and walk out. Super fast, super convenient. And for the past several months at the least they have been boxing it up and using masking tape to keep all your items secure for the drive. I personally really appreciate this, especially when I'm the only one picking it up with no one to baby the package if you know what I mean. Lol even not driving crazy that stuff especially the curry can make a giant mess if you go around a corner just a little bit too fast (for the food to sit still) or have to put the breaks on hard because someone is driving like an idiot in front of you.. Anyways, I like this place. It's pretty good. Get the gyoza if it doesn't come with your dish. It really is pretty good especially with the sauce k shoots!

WARNING: this is going to be a LONG REVIEW. be patient, read through, and you'll be glad you did. i've only noticed this place recently as we have been patronizing the nearby Kaneohe Petco to get supplies for my Kidlets' aquarium. my husband has been here before with his son, and they always raved about it. lots of parking in the parking lot, no problem there...we walk inside, and seat ourselves. the place is crowded. so far, so good. then...we wait about 7 minutes just to get a menu. before they arrived with a pair of menus, i had spotted a take out menu on the podium, and asked hubby to get it. i decided what i was going to get before they even arrived with the proper menus. tsk-tsk. however, once we ordered, the food came out fast! hubby ordered Beef Stew Curry Ramen Combo, and i ordered the Mochiko Chicken Curry Ramen combo, both priced at $9.50, which i think is quite a deal. two bowls of ramen, with a large piece of beef and kamaboko inside...tasty broth and perfect noodles arrived soon after ordering. then the second part came, the curry rice part of the combo. as we dug into the ramen, the last part of the meal came, a plate of 4 gyoza, lightly fried. what a deal! my Mochiko Chicken curry was pretty good, except for some crunchy rice. the gyoza was delicate and tasty...all in all, this place was going to get a great review despite the menu neglect in the beginning of this experience, because once that speed bump was behind us, the service was fast and friendly. the woman next to us had a tasty looking meal too, and i kept glancing over at what she was eating. she was with her young grandchild, who had become bored and fidgety over the course of the meal. she had gotten to the point where she was having to scold the child for getting out of the seat and wandering around, but something happened next that ensured the child would be staying in her seat. i heard the woman exclaim something like "oh my god, is that a mouse?" i looked over at her, and she was looking at me as if she wanted me to confirm that she wasn't seeing things. the table next to her, on the opposite side of us, housed a small mouse that was scurrying to and fro beneath it. "oh my, you're right!" i said, "there it is!" now, the worst part, is not only that there are pests running about in an establishment that we're eating at, but the way the manager treated the woman after she complained to him that there was a mouse running about. he was prepared to move her table. WAIT, WHAT? he's going to move her table? as far as she was concerned, she was DONE WITH EATING. she informed him that that was a Health Department violation, and the man, instead of accepting responsibilty, began ARGUING with her! "i have lots of mice at my house!' (YES, he ACTUALLY SAID THAT), "we cannot get rid of all the mice," "we set traps and they run next door and then come back" were amongst some of the choice gems he was telling her. he was acting like he was angry that she was disgusted that there were vermin crawling around in a FOOD ESTABLISHMENT! i got pissed off, and while i was still shoveling the tasty food down my gob, i told him to "STOP ARGUING WITH HER! YOU"RE IN THE WRONG!" he said nothing much to me. i went outside to send the woman the video i took of the mouse running about, and while i was outside, my husband also told the man, "don't argue with those two, you're in the wrong, it's a health violation" (not to mention the fact that my husband knows what would happen if the man angered me any further). so, the manager comped her meal, and our meal, and as we left, we saw the manager heading off to Kaneohe Safeway...presumably to buy rat poison. to see the video of the mouse, copy and paste. youtube.com/watch?v=B51P… so...beware.

Such a let down!!! One day after work I was craving a won ton ramen. I work at windward city and I always go to ayame for my ramen but I decided to try somewhere different so I chose sumo ramen. The best way to describe my meal was gloop..there were a lot of wonton floating around in my soup which was great but I had to hunt and hunt for my noodle. It's pretty sad when the meat inside the won ton is so small you can't tell if you're eating meat or the won ton wrapper. The meat was smaller than a dime! I know there are cutbacks and things are more expensive now days but that's drastic. I love noodles and ill eat almost any type but that meal killed my appetite. Also my "shoyu" broth had an overpowering taste of ginger in it. Thats a first for me. I'm not sure if that's how they make it or it was an off day but I'm just glad my boyfriend didn't order with me that day because he's allergic!! I'm giving two stars only because on a previous visit I placed a takeout order and had to wait a while so a worker gave me a free fruit punch to drink while i waited. That was nice.

Delicious! I had the Katsu spam curry and rice. My brother had the curry ramen and my parents had the corn ramen. Definitely got lucky stopping by this place before heading over to the museum down the street. The food was great and satisfied all of us for a very decent price (as we had been eating overpriced food from downtown Honolulu for the past few days). Would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. Theres no bathroom though so if you have to go, you'll have to visit the Starbucks next door which it didnt seem like anyone cared if you used them just for that :)

Imagine you are at Sonic, confronted by over a thousand flavor combinations to put into your shake. Then imagine that shake is ramen noodles. You are now at Sumo Ramen. I stepped into the zone, the Sumo Ramen zone that is, and I immediately regretted it. Every chair had a patron, and there was a standing line for pickup orders. There was only one server for the twenty patrons sitting down and the three people waiting for pickup. Before she seated me, I ordered, thinking it would take for ever. WRONG. In two minutes, my seafood ramen was sitting in front of me, looking delicious. "Isn't it fast?" my server asked me. I nodded in agreement, as I had already begun inhaling the soft noodles and giant chunks of squid and shrimp swimming in my 10 inch, $7 bowl of heaven.

I'm a townie and had a fab day in Kaneohe. Decided to take the family to eat dinner at Sumo Ramen and Curry. BIG MISTAKE!!! Waste of money ($45+) I ordered the spicy seafood ramen combo. Seafood was fresh but the soup was bland, the noodles mediocre. Not spicy enough for me so I added sricha sauce and shoyu. Of course, this made the soup cold. The gyoza was the tiniest gyoza I've ever seen and eaten. The fried rice was cold and bland as well. My husband ordered the mapo tofu ramen. Same thing, soup was bland and not spicy as promised. Added the condiments again, and the "broth" got cold. Had to ask for the pickles and ginger. Heading back home, our son and daughter informed us the curry sauce tasted a little sour to them. My son had the chicken katsu curry rice and my daughter had the crotoquette curry. They told us they thought that's how the curry was supposed to taste like. Should have asked why they didn't finisher their food. Shame on them for serving old food to kids. Plus side: My children loved the fried food. Our server was attentive. NEVER AGAIN!

having been to multiple "real" ramen shops, this place was a disappointment. while it may look good and shiny on the outside - the food completely lacks flavor. the curry ramen has way too much vegetable filler and the curry in this dish is very watery and tasteless. i guess they're trying to make it stretch or something b/c i've had better curry udon at Curry House. the regular ramen broths are just as bland and tasteless. the gyoza is typical - previously frozen, commercially made gyoza. at first i thought this was based on location - but i've tried three different Sumo Ramen's around the island... and they're all the same BLAND food. i can probably make better ramen using a package of Sapporo Ichiban and leftover scraps in my own kitchen.

Visit: 5/6/09 - Dinner. Chicken Katsu Curry. I have to vent. I just had the worst time at this place. I called in a to go order and when I arrived it was not ready. They told me to wait 15 minutes. So I said well I have nothing better to do. So I wait. 15 -20 minutes later they tell me sorry they are busy, please wait some more. Like a idiot I wait. Then they come out and ask me what I ordered. I told them to forget it and left. I will definately not come back here. Hopefully this was only a weird case that happened to me, but being on the receiving end of it really made me mad. I had been here before and they normally have okay chicken katsu curry. Don't eat the ramen. The soup is bland and noodles have a tough texture. Gyoza is okay here. Prices I find were above average. They don't give very big portions for the price you have to pay. For this review they deserve one star.

Sorry but just not a huge fan. The only thing I really enjoy from here is the Gyoza and the service. It's the most tastiest thing I've eaten here.... And trust me I've eaten here too many times considering that I don't like it. But since it used to be the only ramen place in Kaneohe that was close to where I live, it became our only choice for gyoza and ramen. I've tried several different ramens and i have always walked away non impressed. It was always more on the bland side-especially the shoyu ramen that comes with the sets. I actually prefer packaged sapporo ramen to their shoyu ramen broth. My husband enjoys the Katsu curry from here but since he ain't doing this review they still get only 1 star. the sheer thought of it makes me hungry... the oyster curry: 5 crispy pieces of deep fried oysters, accompanied with rice and japanese curry, smothered with pickled veggies and a sprinkling of chili powder... i am in heaven. soooo good! the oysters are so juicy and jam packed with oyster-y goodness. mmm. i love their curry! really good portions too. trust me, this is definitely something you want to try.

We are regulars here! This is the only restaurant we consistently turn to. Yummy food for cheap just can't be beat. Service is always fast and friendly. I'm not sure how much the people who are complaining about small portions eat! My boyfriend (6' 2" and 260 pounds) and I SPLIT a combo meal for our dinner. A bowl of noodles, plate of gyoza and chicken katsu curry is our "usual" and if we are super hungry, we order an appetiser of mochiko chicken. If you're looking for an all-you-can-eat trough of food for $8 go to Las Vegas.

Best ramen place on the windward side hands down! The workers are friendly and always greet you when you come in. The restaurant is always clean and they have their own bathroom for customers. The food is always great. I always get the chicken curry combo. They make the food quickly so there isn't ever a long wait. The best part about this place is its super inexpensive and the portions are large. Best deal for your dollar. This place does get busy on the weekends and during dinner time and the parking is can get kind of tight. When did does get busy you can always call in your order too.

Excellent place for families. Everything that I've had here is very tasty including their dashi (broth). My typical go-to's on the menu would have to be the curry udons or the mabo tofu. It's reasonably priced where you would be able to get a combo (main dish item, gyoza, and fried rice) for $10 or less. Service is excellent and the owners of the Kaneohe location is very friendly and personable. Food comes out fast (except for maybe the gyoza). They also do take-out although I have yet to try this option. Parking can sometimes be congested, especially during prime lunch and dinner hours.

I really enjoy Sumo Ramen. Good place for Ramen and Curry. Prices are very reasonable especially the combos. My favorite is the Mochiko Chicken Curry Combo. It includes Mochiko Chicken with a side of Curry and Rice, Gyoza, and a bowl of Ramen. For $9.50 you can't go wrong. The staff is very friendly and will service you right away. They also take phone orders which makes it very convent for dinner :D. All in all a good place to eat if your in Kaneohe.

This is a good lil ramen shop. It's tried and true since high school for me and I want to share my latest experience that made me even more of a fan. I went here with my dad & sister one afternoon recently and there was nobody in the restaurant. My family ordered first and I did my usual "I'm vegan, what the heck can I eat here?" line of questioning. The server did ask me what does vegan mean, which I was happy to explain (but I do think that in this day and age, restaurants should be educating their staff on different dietary needs and restrictions). After I explained it, he suggested veggie rolls and croquette. I said that sounds good! When our food came, I realized that I was son hungry, I forgot to ask if there was egg in any of the items I ordered. He said he was so sorry but there may be egg in the batter for the croquette. He said he felt bad that I ordered something I couldn't eat. I said it's okay, I could just take it home for my husband who would definitely eat it. He offered me a veggie ramen which would have no noodles, just a bunch of fresh vegetables in soup water! He said that normally, the soup base has animal products in it so he will make it without that base. At first, I declined, not wanting to create more work and trouble, but he said my family is eating so I should have something to eat with them. I was so thankful for his consideration and understanding of a problem that wasn't even a problem! I didn't get his name, but that server is a shining example of great customer service and the reason I will continue to return to this location.

This place is SOOOO freaken ONOLISCIOUS! Everytime I go back home, about several times a year I use to eat at the one that use to be down the street Makakilo. Well they close that place a few years ago and I was like freaken out. I've tried literally 95% of everything on the menu and would always order more than 60 bucks worth. Well my sister in-law said this one was open so now when I go home, either me or my family makes the trip down. My favorite is the garlic chicken wings! Dam Bomb! And of course I love the fried rice and that I'm super picky about. The croquettes are soo good too. My dad loves the fried rice, but always blows up and gets swollen. I told him that's how you know it's good food, when it's seasoned like it should be! He still eats it because it's worth the onoliscious flavors. It's not expensive at all and you get hug portions. My hubby too, who's full on Buddah Head "my grampa called him" but he's from the mainland, loves the Ramen here. Everything is sooo good and I can't wait to go back home again this thanksgiving, cuz I'm gonna order a tray of the chicken wings, freeze them and take it back to CO with me. I do that with All the food I like, which takes up a whole suitecase in itself. SOOO worth it!! This place is AS GOOD AS IT GET"S! Mainland ain't got noting on this place, even if they are Japanese owned, like in Denver.

My husband and I love to eat at Sumo especially on cold rainy nights since we live in Kaneohe. We came here tonight because I just had a root canal done and wanted something nice and soft to eat. It was perfect. Great service and great ramen. My favorite is the Mochiko Chicken Ramen with a side order Gyoza and my husband likes the Char Sui Ramen or Won Ton Ramen. Their Mochiko chicken plate is good also and their Mac salad is one of the best on this side of the island. This is one of our go to places when we can't decide what we want to eat.

Dined here for lunch on 7/28/13. I had the seafood ramen,fried rice, and gyoza combo. First off, I would like to say that this place seems way better than the Sumo Ramen at Pearl Highlands. For one, the portions are bigger. Also, since it's not located in a food court like the one at Pearl Highlands, I actually got to sit in a booth with a nice cushiony seat. Like I said, I ordered the seafood ramen combo. Overall it was very delicious. The seafood ramen was great, with generous portions and the soup being very tasty. The fried rice was good, but I think the fried rice from ezogiku is better. But I can honestly say that the fried rice here, is still.pretty good. The gyoza is also good, but I wish they were a little bigger. Size aside the gyoza is very tasty. Overall, a very positive experience and if i'm ever in Kaneohe again, I would definitely come back here again. Highly recommended.

Came for lunch around 3pm and we haven't been here for a while but their food was always good to me. This time when we walked in it was empty and we were the only ones that were dining in the whole time we were there. We were greeted and taken cared of right away and our water came soon after. I noticed they had a bit of remodeling work done with a new bar and brand new chairs and tables. They also took down all the pictures of the sumo wrestlers. We ordered our food and received it within 10 minutes. I had the shrimp tempura udon with a side of tako yaki balls and my bf had the mabo tofu ramen combo that came with fried rice and gyoza. Everything tasted great! Tako yaki balls topped it off. Always had a good experience here with good service and food.

My bf and I came in on a busy night, and we got seated right away at the bar. A good start since I usually don't mind not sitting at a table. But then.... This bar had no leg room! We had to angle our bodies away from the table, which became more and more uncomfortable throughout the meal. At least there were cute fish to watch in the aquarium. Since I often get chicken katsu curry from Ayame's (much better than here and practically the same menu), I decided to try something different. I got the mini mochiko chicken curry, which was starred as a favorite at this restaurant. I was expecting good stuff since it's a recommended item. However! My chicken was rubbery, like they were leftovers from yesterday and reheated in the microwave. I ate maybe 3 or 4 pieces and decided I wouldn't finish it. My bf got chicken katsu curry and gyoza, which he enjoyed. The service was pretty good. I'd say that was the redeeming quality of this restaurant for this last visit. The sumo pictures on the wall are entertaining and fits the name of the restaurant, but it makes for a weird vibe. I kind of feel like I'm eating in a restaurant frequented for take-out and not dine-in.

Had the Mapo Tofu Ramen combo and the ramen was really salty but ate it with the fried rice and that made it better. Wifey had the Tonkotsu and it was just ok. Had it way better at other places. Because of where we were sitting on the counter, we could see into the kitchen and noticed how the 2 young cooks kept on touching and flipping their hair. They had very long Justin Beber type hair with NO covering at all. NICE! Also the waiter and waitress touching everything and I do mean everything and not washing hands before handling food and drinks. The worse part of it all was as we were leaving we got up from the counter and there was a HUGE roach on the wall (see my picture that I posted). My wife is horrified by roaches so her reaction was alarming. She all of a sudden was grossed out and was on the verge of puking. Never again!

Me and my friends should stop going to Windward Mall to shop cause we always end up finding the weirdest places to eat. Damn us for getting hungry hahaha. I saw this place at Kam Shopping Center as well and wanted to try it then with my friend. So the food here seems very similar to some fast foods I've tried at other places. But I was hungry and didn't care. The price was affordable so bleh. I wouldn't say that I would come back however. I got the tempura udon and although I liked my crunchy foods... the udon soup base was ew. But, I've tasted worse. Tried this place once, and it was alrighttt.

We were hungry when we got to Windward mall. So we picked this place out of all the other restaurants there. We were kinda skeptical about it because it was empty. But the food looked good so we went in. I got the plate with mochiko chicken. My friends got the tempura and udon and curry ramen. I thought my plate seem like L&L meal plate. So nothing different there. My friend said the curry ramen was good with the mochiko chicken. My other friend that got the udon didn't like the soup with the noodles. It was pretty filling though. I guess this place is same as the others..I don't see it specially different. Must be the name that makes it different. There were picture strip with sumo along the walls. Haha.

Weird atmosphere...BUT this place totally changed my opinion of local curry / katsu grinz kine places...I just may have to be more open minded in the future! Husband got the mochiko chicken curry combo and I ordered the the chicken katsu no combo....WHOA! HUGE plate of the best katsu I have ever had. I sorta gave up on katsu years ago.... OMG super good curry sauce to swipe the chicken thru...but waaaay to much..no way can eat all that curry sauce. The katsu sauce was unlike any I have ever had. I remember it always just sorta tasted like ketchup and worchester sauce...NOT this! YUM. Update! Been back 2 times since the above review... katsu can be hit or miss...but when its a hit.... ITS A HIT!

People just shouldn't expect so much if it's not a pricey place. This isn't a gourmet restaurant. Very simple restaurant - very simple curry, ramen, fried rice, and gyoza. My husband and I go and spend about $20 for a meal with all of the above. Just get a nice combo meal that comes with three of the above and a side of the fourth. I am not a complicated person - ramen's a ramen, it ain't your french onion soup with melted brie on top. You order what you get peeps - don't complain about it, enjoy it. Service is good, and people are right, you don't get the food in the order that you necessarily order, but if you are such a stickler on that go to the cheesecake factory.

Saturday night, I was foraging for food in Kaneohe with a slightly unsettled stomach, and settled here. I ordered the cold udon, which came on a tray with a separate bowl of cold sauce and some wasabi on the side. Honestly I wasn't expecting much - basically, I was expecting something to fill and settle my stomach, which it did. The portion was fairly small, but at the moment was what I needed. Props, though, to the wait staff for easing me out of what may have been an awkward situation. Having only a limited amount of small bills on me, not wanting to break a large bill, and aware that some places have minimums on use of plastic, I ventured to ask, and they reassured me that all was well (their minimum on plastic is $5 - which a normal meal should fulfill). So I left with a stomach that felt better and with enough energy to handle what turned out to be an exciting night.

We decided to get some ramen and curry to help battle this virus I have. I thought I would find some solace with ramen to soothe my throat. The ramen did soothe my throat but there was some issues with my curry and my gyoza. First of all, my spouse got his curry way ahead of mine. His came out nice and hot, and I had to wait for mine. When I got mine, it was rather cold. It didn't make sense to me as to why I waited much longer and the curry came out much colder. ...then it got "better". I had shared some food with my spouse and other family members. My child was eating her way through a gyoza and low and behold a long piece of hair. I was completely disgusted and ready to walk out of the door. The waitress apologized and we waited awhile to get those replaced, and by the time they were replaced, we were almost done with our meals. Needless to say, we didn't finish them, nor did I want to. After all was said and done, all we got was the apology, nothing taken off the bill.... I don't foresee us coming back here!

WARNING: this is going to be a LONG REVIEW. be patient, read through, and you'll be glad you did. i've only noticed this place recently as we have been patronizing the nearby Kaneohe Petco to get supplies for my Kidlets' aquarium. my husband has been here before with his son, and they always raved about it. lots of parking in the parking lot, no problem there...we walk inside, and seat ourselves. the place is crowded. so far, so good. then...we wait about 7 minutes just to get a menu. before they arrived with a pair of menus, i had spotted a take out menu on the podium, and asked hubby to get it. i decided what i was going to get before they even arrived with the proper menus. tsk-tsk. however, once we ordered, the food came out fast! hubby ordered Beef Stew Curry Ramen Combo, and i ordered the Mochiko Chicken Curry Ramen combo, both priced at $9.50, which i think is quite a deal. two bowls of ramen, with a large piece of beef and kamaboko inside...tasty broth and perfect noodles arrived soon after ordering. then the second part came, the curry rice part of the combo. as we dug into the ramen, the last part of the meal came, a plate of 4 gyoza, lightly fried. what a deal! my Mochiko Chicken curry was pretty good, except for some crunchy rice. the gyoza was delicate and tasty...all in all, this place was going to get a great review despite the menu neglect in the beginning of this experience, because once that speed bump was behind us, the service was fast and friendly. the woman next to us had a tasty looking meal too, and i kept glancing over at what she was eating. she was with her young grandchild, who had become bored and fidgety over the course of the meal. she had gotten to the point where she was having to scold the child for getting out of the seat and wandering around, but something happened next that ensured the child would be staying in her seat. i heard the woman exclaim something like "oh my god, is that a mouse?" i looked over at her, and she was looking at me as if she wanted me to confirm that she wasn't seeing things. the table next to her, on the opposite side of us, housed a small mouse that was scurrying to and fro beneath it. "oh my, you're right!" i said, "there it is!" now, the worst part, is not only that there are pests running about in an establishment that we're eating at, but the way the manager treated the woman after she complained to him that there was a mouse running about. he was prepared to move her table. WAIT, WHAT? he's going to move her table? as far as she was concerned, she was DONE WITH EATING. she informed him that that was a Health Department violation, and the man, instead of accepting responsibilty, began ARGUING with her! "i have lots of mice at my house!' (YES, he ACTUALLY SAID THAT), "we cannot get rid of all the mice," "we set traps and they run next door and then come back" were amongst some of the choice gems he was telling her. he was acting like he was angry that she was disgusted that there were vermin crawling around in a FOOD ESTABLISHMENT! i got pissed off, and while i was still shoveling the tasty food down my gob, i told him to "STOP ARGUING WITH HER! YOU"RE IN THE WRONG!" he said nothing much to me. i went outside to send the woman the video i took of the mouse running about, and while i was outside, my husband also told the man, "don't argue with those two, you're in the wrong, it's a health violation" (not to mention the fact that my husband knows what would happen if the man angered me any further). so, the manager comped her meal, and our meal, and as we left, we saw the manager heading off to Kaneohe Safeway...presumably to buy rat poison. to see the video of the mouse, copy and paste. youtube.com/watch?v=B51P… so...beware.

I have always been a fan of Sumo Ramen! My family are regular customer with our usuals. We really like the beef curry, mochiko chicken curry, chicken katsu curry, cold somen, cold soba, etc! However they unfortunately lost a star from me. NEVER GET SHRIMP TEMPURA!!!!! I was so disappointed. I don't know if it's always terrible or if it was just that one day but the shrimp tempura had so much over cooked/fried batter and super tiny shrimp (like shrimp cocktail kine shrimp). All it tasted like fried oil and batter. I even took a photos! Disappointed

I love the chicken curry combo.. Comes with the gyoza and noodles.. I usually come here because my husband loves it so much however I cannot complain about the quality of the food or the cost. It's also very convenient because we usually call for takeout and our whole order is usually ready no longer than 10 minutes! ~ which for us is simply the drive over.. We go in to pick it up, pay and walk out. Super fast, super convenient. And for the past several months at the least they have been boxing it up and using masking tape to keep all your items secure for the drive. I personally really appreciate this, especially when I'm the only one picking it up with no one to baby the package if you know what I mean. Lol even not driving crazy that stuff especially the curry can make a giant mess if you go around a corner just a little bit too fast (for the food to sit still) or have to put the breaks on hard because someone is driving like an idiot in front of you.. Anyways, I like this place. It's pretty good. Get the gyoza if it doesn't come with your dish. It really is pretty good especially with the sauce k shoots!

There were two of us at the table. By chance we each ordered the same thing - mabo tofu ramen. We both thought it was completely tasteless. Not even bland - it was tasteless. We put salt on it. Then chili powder. Finally shoyu helped. On the plus side, it was hot. Getting back to the negative side - the table had a funky smell, like it was wiped down with a dirty cloth. The condiment containers on the table were each lightly encrusted with a sticky grime. We know that because we had to touch each one to try to get some flavor into our ramen. Finally on my sad list of negatives, they did not have a bottle opener.

Such a let down!!! One day after work I was craving a won ton ramen. I work at windward city and I always go to ayame for my ramen but I decided to try somewhere different so I chose sumo ramen. The best way to describe my meal was gloop..there were a lot of wonton floating around in my soup which was great but I had to hunt and hunt for my noodle. It's pretty sad when the meat inside the won ton is so small you can't tell if you're eating meat or the won ton wrapper. The meat was smaller than a dime! I know there are cutbacks and things are more expensive now days but that's drastic. I love noodles and ill eat almost any type but that meal killed my appetite. Also my "shoyu" broth had an overpowering taste of ginger in it. Thats a first for me. I'm not sure if that's how they make it or it was an off day but I'm just glad my boyfriend didn't order with me that day because he's allergic!! I'm giving two stars only because on a previous visit I placed a takeout order and had to wait a while so a worker gave me a free fruit punch to drink while i waited. That was nice.

Delicious! I had the Katsu spam curry and rice. My brother had the curry ramen and my parents had the corn ramen. Definitely got lucky stopping by this place before heading over to the museum down the street. The food was great and satisfied all of us for a very decent price (as we had been eating overpriced food from downtown Honolulu for the past few days). Would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. Theres no bathroom though so if you have to go, you'll have to visit the Starbucks next door which it didnt seem like anyone cared if you used them just for that :)

Imagine you are at Sonic, confronted by over a thousand flavor combinations to put into your shake. Then imagine that shake is ramen noodles. You are now at Sumo Ramen. I stepped into the zone, the Sumo Ramen zone that is, and I immediately regretted it. Every chair had a patron, and there was a standing line for pickup orders. There was only one server for the twenty patrons sitting down and the three people waiting for pickup. Before she seated me, I ordered, thinking it would take for ever. WRONG. In two minutes, my seafood ramen was sitting in front of me, looking delicious. "Isn't it fast?" my server asked me. I nodded in agreement, as I had already begun inhaling the soft noodles and giant chunks of squid and shrimp swimming in my 10 inch, $7 bowl of heaven.

Sorry but just not a huge fan. The only thing I really enjoy from here is the Gyoza and the service. It's the most tastiest thing I've eaten here.... And trust me I've eaten here too many times considering that I don't like it. But since it used to be the only ramen place in Kaneohe that was close to where I live, it became our only choice for gyoza and ramen. I've tried several different ramens and i have always walked away non impressed. It was always more on the bland side-especially the shoyu ramen that comes with the sets. I actually prefer packaged sapporo ramen to their shoyu ramen broth. My husband enjoys the Katsu curry from here but since he ain't doing this review they still get only 1 star. the sheer thought of it makes me hungry... the oyster curry: 5 crispy pieces of deep fried oysters, accompanied with rice and japanese curry, smothered with pickled veggies and a sprinkling of chili powder... i am in heaven. soooo good! the oysters are so juicy and jam packed with oyster-y goodness. mmm. i love their curry! really good portions too. trust me, this is definitely something you want to try.

We are regulars here! This is the only restaurant we consistently turn to. Yummy food for cheap just can't be beat. Service is always fast and friendly. I'm not sure how much the people who are complaining about small portions eat! My boyfriend (6' 2" and 260 pounds) and I SPLIT a combo meal for our dinner. A bowl of noodles, plate of gyoza and chicken katsu curry is our "usual" and if we are super hungry, we order an appetiser of mochiko chicken. Lol I'm biased here. I used to work here and I have a couple of friends who still work there... It is the original Sumo Ramen and the absolute best one! I know, because I've tried the one at Pearl Highlands on several occasions as well as the one at the Kamehameha Shopping Center... no comparison. Despite all the inner-drama, the food is good. The only downfall is that they don't make their own croquette anymore, which was so good but I guess it wasn't cost-effective. The price is good and great for the locals who don't need all the glitzes of fancy dining. There's also a spicy garlic chicken that's super good. Their gyoza is tasty as well. Ramen is ramen, and the udon is store-bought and sold at any Daiei -- sorry, Don Quijote =P Ramen is ramen, cold noodle is the same... They do give a good amount of vegetables. Their sumo ramen consists of: double noodles, corn, menma, won bok, bean sprouts, wakame, egg, and chicken katsu (I might be missing some, it's been a while). Finally, they have stir-fry dishes. My favorite is the spicy beef fried noodles with chicken instead (just a little healthier lol). The curry fried rice is very good too! I'll tell you this much: I saw what the kitchen did and I would STILL eat there! (I can almost guarantee they don't do any "Waiting..."-type of things back there lmao -- well, except once, where the cook dropped a fried chicken on the ground and picked it up and tried to serve it but too bad the customer saw and complained... just that once though i swear) It would be 5 stars if I was still there =P or if they sold alcohol (but they rely on high turnovers and alcohol makes you linger although it is BYOB). I hear there are other better ramen places. One in particular is somewhere in Kapahulu I think?? After I try a few more places I'll let you know.

I'm a townie and had a fab day in Kaneohe. Decided to take the family to eat dinner at Sumo Ramen and Curry. BIG MISTAKE!!! Waste of money ($45+) I ordered the spicy seafood ramen combo. Seafood was fresh but the soup was bland, the noodles mediocre. Not spicy enough for me so I added sricha sauce and shoyu. Of course, this made the soup cold. The gyoza was the tiniest gyoza I've ever seen and eaten. The fried rice was cold and bland as well. My husband ordered the mapo tofu ramen. Same thing, soup was bland and not spicy as promised. Added the condiments again, and the "broth" got cold. Had to ask for the pickles and ginger. Heading back home, our son and daughter informed us the curry sauce tasted a little sour to them. My son had the chicken katsu curry rice and my daughter had the crotoquette curry. They told us they thought that's how the curry was supposed to taste like. Should have asked why they didn't finisher their food. Shame on them for serving old food to kids. Plus side: My children loved the fried food. Our server was attentive. NEVER AGAIN!

Best ramen place on the windward side hands down! The workers are friendly and always greet you when you come in. The restaurant is always clean and they have their own bathroom for customers. The food is always great. I always get the chicken curry combo. They make the food quickly so there isn't ever a long wait. The best part about this place is its super inexpensive and the portions are large. Best deal for your dollar. This place does get busy on the weekends and during dinner time and the parking is can get kind of tight. When did does get busy you can always call in your order too.

having been to multiple "real" ramen shops, this place was a disappointment. while it may look good and shiny on the outside - the food completely lacks flavor. the curry ramen has way too much vegetable filler and the curry in this dish is very watery and tasteless. i guess they're trying to make it stretch or something b/c i've had better curry udon at Curry House. the regular ramen broths are just as bland and tasteless. the gyoza is typical - previously frozen, commercially made gyoza. at first i thought this was based on location - but i've tried three different Sumo Ramen's around the island... and they're all the same BLAND food. i can probably make better ramen using a package of Sapporo Ichiban and leftover scraps in my own kitchen.

Visit: 5/6/09 - Dinner. Chicken Katsu Curry. I have to vent. I just had the worst time at this place. I called in a to go order and when I arrived it was not ready. They told me to wait 15 minutes. So I said well I have nothing better to do. So I wait. 15 -20 minutes later they tell me sorry they are busy, please wait some more. Like a idiot I wait. Then they come out and ask me what I ordered. I told them to forget it and left. I will definately not come back here. Hopefully this was only a weird case that happened to me, but being on the receiving end of it really made me mad. I had been here before and they normally have okay chicken katsu curry. Don't eat the ramen. The soup is bland and noodles have a tough texture. Gyoza is okay here. Prices I find were above average. They don't give very big portions for the price you have to pay. For this review they deserve one star.

Secret Menu Item: the Spicy Mochiko Chicken Curry is not on any Sumo Ramen menu, but they will make here if you ask. The only other Sumo Ramen location that may prepare this elusive dish is at Market City. While the regular mochiko chicken curry is very good, the spicy is simply outstanding.

Wow, so many choices! I was so impressed with all the various ramens and curries to get. I finally decided on the Mochiko Chicken Curry Ramen and a side of gyoza. Both were great! I was really impressed with the amount of mochiko chicken I got. Great flavor. I think personally I like standard shoyu ramen and Japanese curry rather than combining them, but this was a good place to experiment and I'll be back for more mochiko chicken!

Weird to read other reviews of Sumo because my experience was totally different. The gyoza tasted like it was homemade, not previously frozen. My curry was way better than Curry House and the portion was more than generous. The wait was not long for either item. Also the drinks are HUGE. Reasonably priced as well. No complaints here, I'll definitely go back.

Our first time going to this place I should say, "Horrible, Not so good!" The service is terrible and the wasn't that memorable. 1st time to Sumo tonight. I did not like it too much. The ramen had too much bean sprouts and it tasted weird like they didn't wash the sprouts good or the dish had some detergent residue. The tako yaki was not good at all. The authentic tako yaki are not deep fried looking. I would not go back.
