Ramen Ya is still going strong. They're ALWAYS busy everyday, from opening till closing, and have quickly outgrown their tiny space. Wait times can stretch to 20 minutes but turnover is fairly quick. Contrary to what a few say negatively about this place, some of their dishes are really good. My all-time favorite is still the Shoyu Ramen, followed by the Pork Fried Noodles. The gyoza are good but you have to ask for them to be well done in order to get that nice crust. The menu hasn't changed much in the past 5 years, until this year, so an update is in order. They did a light renovation a few years ago which resulted in new tables, chairs, and a slightly larger counter seating area. FOOD: Tan Tan Ramen - I never look at their menu as I always know what I want, but one day a few weeks ago I did and was surprised to see this offered. I wasn't too excited as the benchmark version of this death row dish of mine resides at the Goma Tei Ramen chain on Oahu, which no one can duplicate. I searched on every Ramen Ya location's Yelp page and found nada a review on this new dish. So today I took the guinea pig challenge. Unfortunately Ramen Ya's version falls flat on its face. The broth color was similar to a tonkotsu but with a hint of orange; orange from what, I have no idea because there was no real taste to it. The overall flavor was that of a very light miso, with no body or depth. They gave a good amount of seaweed whose flavors bled into the broth and gave it an even odder taste. On top of that, their nasty-tasting bamboo which for some reason tastes like plastic didn't help. There was also an overkill of bland char siu, about 4 pieces. I wouldn't mind the generous portion if the char siu had a good flavor, but it tasted like warmed up meat without any seasoning. Last but not least is half of a boring hard boiled egg that didn't go well with the dish. I stand by my word that NO restaurant on this rock can do a soft egg. So sad. Pass! SERVICE: I'm in here so often, I always get great service. Thanks ladies! OVERALL: I wish the owners of Goma Tei Ramen in Oahu could see how busy these guys are and open up shop to give us some variety.

***Update: thank you to the person who pointed me in the right direction to this place. Review: The food here is excellent. I had combo A: mini ramen, gyoza and spam katsu and curry on the side. More than enough to fill me up. Mom had the big bowl of ramen. It is really big and she ended up taking more than half home. Location: I took off one star because I couldn't find it the first time and walking up and down the OTHER Macy's wing. Would I come back here? Oh yes!!! Definitely filled my ramen craving!!!

I love me some chicken katsu curry. The kids plate is actually a good size, they pack it. The reg plate can feed 2 ppl. Its a small place next to womens macys & they can get pack during lunch & dinner. Ive been lucky enough to get in with no waiting, the only waiting part is when some servers take forever to even get you water but the wait is longer when u r ready to order. Other than that the food is well worth it & the prices are decent.

I just love this place for their seafood crispy noodles and shrimp fried rice. Super ONO! Very generous portions :))

Food isn't as good as it was when it first opened up. Portions aren't as abundant as they used to be either. Food is okay for a Ramon shop at a mall. Customer service was terrible. Every single waitress looked like they would rather be anywhere else but here.

I only have tried this place once and it was okay I ordered the kimchi fried rice it came out to about $9.74 I believe it tasted pretty good but I like the one on Oahu better, but this place isn't so bad I would probably order from them again

My gf and I went swimming, today, and so we were a bit tired, a lot hungry, and a lot more jonesing for some ramen, fried rice, and dependable (Hon)dashi. Our meal came quickly: she, having the chix katsu on a mountain of fried rice w/side bowl of mild curry; me, having Combo A ramen bowl and mochiko chix (served with a scoop of rice, a scoop of mac salad, and good sized palm full of mochiko chix (sweet, crunch and all thigh meat). Completely full and satisfied at the end. Not bad for $22.08 at all, plus friendly service. I will close this review by adding that some people have complained about service issues but we found service to be satisfactory, granted they weren't super-busy or super-slow. Every place has "issues" but there wasn't anything major or of any real concern. What a fair review should do is point out the major plus & minuses, and not nitpick-the-hell out of a food establishment. We got quick and friendly service, good food for good value, and a full belly on the way out for about $10 bucks per person. My gf did not care much for the gyoza, however...not because it sucked but simply because she doesn't like the 1/2 grilled, 1/2 steamed Japanese version, preferring more of the Korean mandoo type. Other than that nothing to really complain about. Enjoy!

This place was a major disappointment. This was our first stop when we got to Maui. Wanted Ramen and this place came up on yelp. Got there and order 3 different bowls of ramen and a bowl of udon. Food came out and it looked good, but once we all dug in, it was a major disappointment. The broth was very starchy and the taste was below average. It seems like it was instant ramen and they just added stuff to it to make it their own. My brother only took about 3 bites of his big bowl and gave up. Will not recommend this place to anyone who is looking to eat ramen or udon. Since Oahu has good ramen, we figured that Maui might be the same.... very said to hear some locals saying that they don't have good ramen in Maui.

I was raised on the noodle shops in Chinatown in downtown Honolulu, so I guess you could say I'm spoiled when it comes to good noodles. Maui isn't known for its saimin, ramen, or even fried noodles. When my very picky sister recommended Ramen Ya, off I went. She told me to get the crispy seafood noodles, so my date decided to try those. I had the char siu ramen, and we got sides of gyoza and shrimp tempura. The place was packed, so I had high expectations. The apps were good, but not remarkable. My soup was okay, but nothing like the iconic noodle shops in downtown Honolulu. I said I was picky. The crispy noodles absorbed the gravy of the seafood and veggie topping handily. The seafood consisted of shrimp and fish. I expected a little more variety, and the fish was suspiciously unnamed. I suspected tilapia, which I am not fond of. My date ate all the shrimp, and I was left to eat some of the fish and noodles. The noodles A-OK, the fish just okay.

The food is good and lots of food for affordable prices. However, we were barked at by the hostess at the register upon arrival when we went to sit down at a table since there were no signs "wait to be seated". Aparently we needed a number. They werent even kind about it and stuck us in a small two seater middle table. Im a big girl and would appreciate the extra elbow room. Also, on all of occasions here, the staff is so unfriendly and extremely disorganized.

After noticing this restaurant in Queen K Mall brochure, we decided to check this place out. I had also skimmed through some of the yelp reviews to get a handle on which dishes people preferred. We were greeted immediately when we arrived and were seated right away. The restaurant atmosphere is typical busy asian diner style. Busy is generally an indication that this place is good (considering the amount of dining choices at the mall). The waitress was quite attentive and friendly. Even struck up conversation when she found we were visitors to the island. So, on to the food. We ended up ordering a dish each for sharing. The meal also came with free bypass (4). When the food arrived, we were amazed at the portion sizes. The 3 dishes plus gyoza could have easily fed 2 more people. We ordered chicken fried rice, (spicy) tofu ramen, and chicken katsu ramen. The flavor of the fried rice was fantastic! Portion was very large. The tofu ramen was extremely flavorful as well. It had a bit of a kick to it. I even mixed some of the spicy broth on my fried rice and it was an even more amazing combination. The noodles were excellent in both ramen dishes we ordered. The broth of the chicken katsu ramen was very flavorful, the chicken katsu tasty, and the noodles perfectly cooked. The value for your money is excellent here. Combine that with the amazing flavors and you have a winning dining choice. We will definitely have this place on our list the next time we return to the island.

As a former loyal customer of this establishment, I was extremely disappointed at my most recent visit. My boyfriend and I were looking to grab a quick bite before he headed back to work. We had a little over an hour and figured that would be ample amount of time to get some fried rice and bowl of ramen. We got there and there were TWO small tables that were clean and empty and available seats at the counter and yet the hostess/cashier still told us to pull a number and wait. We waited about 25 minutes outside on the bench only to be called in and seated at the counter which had been available since we arrived. Strike one. After being seated, we sat there for about another 15 minutes and NO ONE had even spoken to us. No one came to give us a glass of water, take our orders, or anything. At this point I was already pretty upset. Strike two. When one of the waitresses finally came over to greet us and FINALLY take our orders, she was not only very uninterested but also very rude and unpleasant. Strike three, they're out. By that time we were already about to be late because they had wasted so much of our time. I will be taking my business and money elsewhere, and needless to say, the food here is nothing more than average on its best day. Deserves less than one star in my opinion, I am extremely unsatisfied.

Went there to eat a couple of nights ago. It was early around 5:00 and it was pretty busy. A lady behind the counter gave me a number 1 ticket. We waited outside since there is NO place to wait inside. People kept coming getting numbers to wait or leaving. We waited for about 20 mins. meanwhile a lot of people were leaving and there tables were opening up. A couple with a small child walked in and the women who gave me our number gave an open table to the couple. I walked in and told the lady that we've been waiting a long time as well as others and I have the first number. She told the couple "sorry you can't sit here because someone is complaining." Guess according to her I had no right to complain! The taste of the ramen soup is not as good as when they first opened up. Would rather eat noodles at Sam Satos or Zippys!

Dining experience I would give this place a 3 star as the service wasn't impeccable yet for the price, I wasn't expecting Ruth Chris. Happy hour is between 2-5 pm where you get a delicious serving of Gyoza (4pcs) at a complimentary price with an entree purchase. Entrees range between $8.50-$10.25. Portion sizes are plentiful and can be easily shared. I ordered the Ramen Chicken Katsu and it was ok. The portion size is large so no need to upgrade to the big bowl. The broth was nothing spectacular, a lot of sprouts and very little greenery (looks less inviting then the picture on the menu). I suggest if you are going to order this entree, I would ask for the Chicken Katsu on the side as the chicken would be more crispy vs. left saturated in the broth and coming out soggy. I would returned to try the seafood crispy noodle as it looked delicious or order their fried rice. The ramen wasn't a big hit and it's a tad better than packaged noodle at Wal-Mart.

There was 3 of us, we all ordered separate main dishes and all 3 of us were unsatisfied. The food seems like its all fresh but it's very blah.. The people working there were nice but the food wasn't that great..

RAMEN TIME!!! I've frequented this place a lot since they first opened but on my last visit I was quite disappointed. Service is always five stars, and the lady who's been there since the start...she refers to herself as mama. Always friendly! Tables, floors, utensils, everything is always clean. So then why the low rating? I'm not sure if food quality has changed but on this particular visit, my dishes came out seriously 5x greasier and oily then ever. The chicken katsu was practically...let's just leave it as edible but with something majorly wrong. I ordered the chicken katsu curry for take out, but was disappointed when I opened up the container and saw a layer of curry with the chicken katsu laid out on top. It was like just chicken katsu with sauce drizzled over. The other dish that was ordered was the Combo (Ramen, Gyoza, & Chicken Katsu Curry). Again, Chicken Katsu curry was the same.. The gyoza was oilier then I remembered, nothing especially good. Ramen was so-so. For the price I paid for our meal, I could have easily gone someplace else for greasy grinds. On another hand, I've always liked they're fried rice; so as bad as everything else was, the fried rice has always been tasty. The fried rice guy gets the thumbs up! Overall, I really wanted to like this place. But in the end, it's so-so. Not sure i'll return for a long time..

Not allergy friendly. They don't even understand what allergy friendly is nor can they explain what their dishes are made of! Doesn't deserve even a star.

This place is not recommended. Today I had ordered a Wanton Soup Combo. Also known as the Combo B. I ordered this item for take out. I am used to other Ramen Ya always separating the soup from the noodle or wanton. This location did not do that. I took me about 15 Minutes to get home. When I got home I went to open it and my Wanton was super MUSHY. I hated it. I called the location and all they can tell me is that is how it is supposed to be and that is how they serve it to go. I asked them if it is supposed to be mushy like that and was ignored. I talked to the Manager who said if I wanted the soup separated that I should of said something. Never coming here again and would not recommend it to my friends. I will stick with the Oahu location. They are not perfect but they have better service.

Great fried rice for cheap, at least for Maui, yet the service is RUDE. I will take my business elsewhere.

  • Keith R.

Very large servings at a more than reasonable price. Sometimes the quality is not consistent, but overall, it's very worth it for the type of food offered on Maui. The food is Japanese and usually real tasty. During dinner, there are always people waiting for a table outside. Free gyoza from 2p - 5p with every full meal.

Got double charged on my credit card. Ramenya denied the obvious double charge and was completely unapologetic. Awful attitude and service. Bank resolved it without their help. On top of that the food is altogether mediocre and bland.

First I want to say I would give 3 1/2 stars if that were an option. This place has some really good things. Their gyoza are amazing!! If you go during happy hour (2-5) you get some for free, which is great! Their combination plates are also good and a great deal. We like the Wonton soup with beef curry. The beef curry is not your typical beef curry. It's more like a stew on top of rice, but good. The ramen is good, but I have had better. My husband really likes the ramen,, so I guess it's a matter of taste and to be honest some days it's better than others. Overall a good place and you get a lot of food for not a lot of money.

GREAT BANG FOR THE BUCK! When I lived on Maui this place did not exist. I love ramen , LOVE IT. I had the lunch special which was a massive plate of white rice and stew or curry, Along with a bowl of saimin or ramen. KILLER and it ran me under 10 bucks. Could've easily been 2 meals for me but had to take'em down buddy!

Their only nice when they want to be, I've tried better Ramen in California and coming to this place where they put frozen noodle into a hot pot. And pre made base that's probably something you can buy from Costco for cheaper. Customer service wise they favoritize so unless you're nice to them or talk to them they'll be nice to you. Other wise they will just end up forgetting about you on busy days.

After "surviving" the Road to Hana we were starrrrrving.. and before getting on the HI-31 to head to our condo in Kihei, we were in the area and found this place~! We liked it so much that we came back a couple days later to to-go some more food :] We had: - GYOZA RAMEN yelp.com/biz_photos/rame… $8.50 - LOVED their gyoza!! I think there were about 6 gyozas in this ramen.. huge fat gyozas packed with meat, cabbage, and all that good stuff! - COMBO A $9.50 - GYOZA yelp.com/biz_photos/rame… - mmmm :] - CHICKEN KATSU yelp.com/biz_photos/rame… - so much katsu and curry on a bed of rice.. too much food! - MINI RAMEN yelp.com/biz_photos/rame… - this is not mini! it was a LOT! - CURRY RAMEN yelp.com/biz_photos/rame… $7.95 - uhm.. it's curry.. a whole lot of curry.. very thick.. so if you're looking for some soup to slurp.. this is not the ramen.. it was a bit too much curry for me lol Service: friendly ladies :] and their kitchen is sorta open so you can see the cooks ^^ Parking: they are in the Queen Kaahumanu Center (on the Macy's side) so.. there's pleeeenty of parking ^^ *huge portions, delicious food, friendly service, AND inexpensive.. LOVE :] MmMmm... *burp*

Only if quantity is highly valued over taste. It was recommended as a local flavor, but I left thinking the locals need to be reminded of their heritage. Ramen was bland and only warm. Noodles overcooked. The rest of us had combo plates, Chow mein, cold noodles, and the best was the cold noodles. I'm thinking this is one of those places tourist go to feel like they went to a "local" place and they don't know what authentic ramen tastes like.

I eat here fairly often because, well it's Maui and there's not many great places to eat in my personal opinion. The food here is decent. It's a basic ramen joint. The broth is a little salty but it has flavor and gets the job done. I would compare it to Sumo Ramen on the island of Oahu. The food is not terrible and it's not spectacular either. It's some fast and cheap ramen. There are other dishes as well, such as Katsu curry, mochiko chicken, fried rice, udon, gyoza, and etc. Their mochiko chicken is quite delicious. The chicken is tender and full of flavor. Their gyoza is my favorite. It isn't too oily or overly cooked/crunchy as some places serve. I personally recommend the Gomoku ramen and the Mabo Tofu Udon. The gomoku ramen is salty with a large variety of garnishes. The Mabo tofu ramen/udon has a bit of a kick to it but I like mine extra spicy. Their happy hour is fantastic! Free gyoza from 2pm-5pm! The restaurant is conveniently located downstairs in Queen Kaahumanu mall; however the interior is a bit small. During lunch time, it gets quite crowded and one can feel a bit claustrophobic. I would suggest going there during non-peak hours or getting your meal to go, which I often do.

  • Lisa T.

The ramen here is just so so. The broth is not that flavorful. However, the other dishes - like fried rice and the chicken katsu were quite delicious. Also, the portions for everything are HUGE! It's easily shareable including the combo that comes with a "mini ramen." There aren't many ramen choices on Maui so if you really want ramen...then it's good enough to try out.

Well, another restaurant met my low expectations and exceeded it. I must be the most unlucky person compared to others reviewers here. Strike 1: Dirty tables. It's a seat yourself place. It was not busy and the waitress asked us to sit anywhere and proceeded to just stand at the entrance. EVERY empty table had either dishes on it (from previous customers) or some kind of spilled liquid. Strike 2: Horrible service. I know I don't always speak perfect English, but I think I enunciate well. Our waitress needed us (wife and I) to repeat our orders, count 'em, THREE TIMES, before she read it back to us right [after just pointing to the pictures]. And they still got our order wrong! We let our waitress know again & after 10 minutes we finally got our dishes. Total order to table time: 35 minutes. THEN we had to ask for our chopsticks and broth spoon. THEN we had to ask for our condiments (gyoza sauce, shoyu, pepper...). Also, we had asked for water and a soft drink. We never got it. We even asked the waitress, you got it, THREE TIMES! and still never got it. When the ticket came they tried to charge us for the soft drink. We told them we never got it and to adjust it accordingly. She apologise and adjusted it. Probably the only thing she got right. Strike 3: WTF food! Trust me when I say I know how ramen & gyoza is "supposed" to taste like (having eaten in places like Yokohama, Japan's Chinatown) and Ramen-ya's are a joke. I guess the local ingredients can't replicate the taste. But Ramen-ya's was no where close. My wife had the Mini-Combo A (fried rice, shoyu ramen with gyoza). I had the char-sui ramen with gyoza. Both losers. Fried rice was way too greasy. Gyoza was crunchy with no taste. Char-sui meat was tough and not tender like it's supposed to be. Noodles? Tasted like cardboard! If you can imagine what cardboard tastes like. And the beef broth overdone. Very disappointing... YOUR OUT!: Sorry Ramen-ya. Maybe we came at an off night. Maybe things were not going well before we came. But you should have gave better courteous service to offset the horrible food we got. As it was we wasted our time and money coming there. We did not finish and we did not want to take home the leftovers. It was that bad. Your off our roster . . . for now.

Everything was fine until we got our meal. When we were about to eat the ramen, we noticed there were bugs in it. So we left it untouched. We told our server about it and she gladly took it back. She offered for them to make a new one but our appetites did not sit right with us anymore so we kindly told her its okay. When I went to pay, the owner or manager took my card and quickly swiped it before I could tell her about our incident. I asked if we still needed to pay for the untouched ramen and she said its too late, she already ran my card. What I didn't appreciate was that she made it seem like it was my fault for not telling her quick enough. In a real restaurant, the server it to tell the manager why the food was sent back and immediately make changes to the bill. The manager/ owner did not even offer a discount on the next tab or a simple sorry. It was their fault that they are not communicating properly to each other as employees. I was very disappointed with the "no effort/ its my fault" attitude. And I'm sure she could of canceled the transaction to re-do it. Not coming back. You can find better ramen with better customer service else where. Sansei has a really good ramen!

After all the dreadful ramen places in LA, this little restaurant was heaven! Had our last lunch on Maui here before heading to the airport. Ordered the lunch combo that comes with mini ramen, mini fried rice and four dumplings. Every single item was delicious (whereas most other asian places add pathetically tasting not very fresh salads to their "combos")! This place deserves a higher rating. Great quality for an inexpensive eatery at a large mall. It was packed too, so locals know :)

Great service, food was ok. It's the kind of place you go to when you are tired of the food court food and want something different. Don't expect the ramen to knock your socks off because its just ok. The Katsu curry (which is one of my favorite dishes wherever I go) wasn't up to my standard. The Katsu was too crispy on the verge of crunchy, and there was barely any chicken in it. And I swear because I eat it a lot, the curry was S&B brand. Free Gyoza was pretty good, but then again I think any kind of free food is good. Service was very good even though they were crazy busy made time to refill drinks and check on us. It's Mall food, so don't expect back alley in a Japanese town with a old man with legendary ramen, but it beats packaged ramen with frozen home fried Gyoza.

  • Garrett N.

Total shit food. I'm sure its awesome if you're a teenager and McDonalds still delights you. But nothing here can even be compared to frozen dinner. I've given it several chances, once when it opened and about once a year after that - when I forget how bad it was. Regardless of service, you go to a restaurant for food - this is not food. Much better idea to go Kohos or edo

Skip! Ate here few times thinking it would get better...nope. Everything here is salty!! Poor Maui people still come here because there's no other ramen place. Oahu has so many good places. Poor Maui. Not worth it. Save your $$.

Dh and I went here again today during happy hour after our ziplining adventure. We got the shrimp fried rice and the chicken stir fried noodles. We got 8 free gyoza with these two orders. Both dishes were delicious and provided the comfort food we miss from the normal home cooking DH does. We walked out with 2 small carryout boxes for tomorrow too!

The Chicken Katsu Ramen is fantastic. Pretty satisfying. Pork or Chicken fried rice for the kids is a hit. Its not a really big restaurant and the decor could use some updating. But hey the prices are reasonable and the food is good. The service is pretty fast and the workers there were friendly. One of the spots to stop by for a quick lunch in Kahului.

Been on the island for the last five days and have been asking the locals to recommend the best ramen house. We got concerned after the chef at a well known japanese restaurant said, "Not on Maui...". We ended up using yelp to find Ramen Ya and kind of wish we hadn't. We struggled through the big bowl ramen that we had ordered. The vegetable broth was bad and the noodle to vegetable ratio was 1 to 1. Not a good soup base at all! As for the noodles, they were completely over cooked and made it really hard to finish because they had already expanded far too much. They were so soft that they were actually breaking everytime we grabbed them with our chop sticks. We would to say the highlight of the bowl was the sliced pork. It was a thick cut and had a lot great flavor. If the broth had tasted like the meat, we would have been writing a 5 star review! The service was good and the people were friendly. They checked in on us many times and weren't afraid to prove us wrong on our to go box size! They did a great job. All though the portion sizes were amazing and the service was great it was their noodles and broth that made us give them a 2 star review.

The food here is what I typically expect, you get your money's worth. But I wouldn't call it an authentic noodle shop! The service here is excellent!! No matter how busy or crowded they are, your water glass is always kept full

This place is small so the wait is long I only come here cuz my family likes it..they also told me the wait was 10 min so i wait outside than they turn around and give my table to someone else!!!

Absolutely wonderful!!! This place is located inside the mall so you would think it was in a "food court" type are, but it's not. It's an actual restaurant with chairs and tables. We started with the spam katsu (yummy but so bad for you, haha), chicken karage and an order of gyoza. I had a curry katsu udon and my husband had the beef stew. We had sooo much food and the bill was all under $30; what a deal. The wait staff was nice and friendly and the menu had a great selection! We had a great experience here!

Ramen Ya was a very good place. The restaurant seemed busy but somehow we managed to get into the restaurant within 10-20 minutes, even with a group of 7. The food was very good and their combo meals are a very good deal. Getting a "small" ramen and a "small" entree and 4 pieces of gyoza, all for $10 is a very very good deal nowadays. I would recommend it as a lunch after the swap meet on Saturdays. The curry was very delicious.

This place scores highly in terms of value. For the price you get an absurd amount of food. No one person needs that amount of food! Must have been like 2 cups of rice for my chicken katsu curry. The chicken katsu itself was very tasty, perfectly crispy but the chicken was not dry at all. Wasn't enough curry sauce if I'm being picky but I'd have that dish again. The kimchee fried rice (not sure why the other half ordered that) was probably 2.5 cups of rice which was complete overkill. It wasn't as good and was poor compared to other kimchee fried rice places we have tried. Edible but I'd not order that. As it was happy hour we got some free gyozas as well and they were good. All in all, fills a gap. A very large gap!!!

This place reminds me of Taiyo Ramen but it's...meh. I guess this place will have to do if I'm craving for some ramen. If you Maui peeps think this place is awesome, you need to fly down to O'ahu for the day and try out our better ramen places. Then you probably wouldn't want to come back here, unless you're desperate. Ramen-Ya is located in the Kaahumanu Shopping Center near Macys. The food is okay and the portions are huge. If this is your first time here, I recommend getting the combo sets so you can try everything. I don't remember which set it was, I think it was either A or B but one set came with a bowl of ramen, curry rice and gyoza. The ramen is a bit too salty for me, the curry rice is pretty good and the gyoza was good but it probably came from the frozen section at Costco. The staff is... mediocre. They have 3-4 waitresses in this tiny restaurant and they still mess up our orders with the table next to us. Bad communication. Oh well, at least I got extra 8 gyozas. Next time I come here, I'm avoiding the ramen. I'm getting the Beef Curry and hopefully they mess up on my order and give me more gyoza.

We love this place! Great portions and great prices. The staff is always friendly and provide great service. Combo A & Gyoza Ramen are our favorites :)

There's quite a disparity about this place on Yelp. Having only eaten at Ramen Ya once, I'll put my rating in the middle. The gyoza ramen ($7.95) was a huge portion, but quantity never trumps quality. The noodles were overcooked and limp, as were the boiled gyoza. The broth was surprisingly watery and tasteless, like dishwater. That dish fell flat, but the Spam Katsu ($4.95) was delicious. Perfectly crunchy and not greasy, with an agreeable salty flavor, I loved every bite. The plate lunches that others were eating looked enormous, but I did not have a chance to sample those dishes. I would be willing to come back and give it another try.

We ended at this place on our last trip to Maui. I reluctantly did not want to eat ramen as there are many very good places to go in Los Angeles, but we were stuck at the mall and the place I wanted to go to (Sam Sato's) closed at 2. Anyway, we decided to order a variety of things so my 4 year daughter could choose what she liked best. We ordered the house ramen, fried rice, gyoza and chicken katsu curry. Amazingly, the food was quite delicious. The ramen had a nice rich flavor to the broth without it being overly oily or salty. The fried rice was as good as most of the ramen joints i frequent in LA. The gyoza was nothing special, but not bad in any way. Best of all was the chicken katsu curry. Maybe because I always opt for tonkatsu (pork), the chicken was juicy and flavorful. The curry was tasty and it had the right amount of kick. The most surprising thing, however, was the bill. I think it was about $17 before the tip. This same meal in LA would have been $5 or $6 more and everything is usually more expensive in the islands. If I had to gripe about something, it would be the service. The restaurant was packed to capacity and they had some take out orders, but they had a wait staff of 5 people for a small space. It wasn't so much that the service was bad, but they were extremely disorganized. They could have benefitted from a manager in the front of house. With all that being said, I would go back if I had a ramen craving in Kahului.

When my uncle said that he had the best chicken katsu curry in his life here at Ramen-Ya, I had to try out this mall restaurant. I wouldn't usually eat at a restaurant in the mall, but this place is actually pretty good! It is very reasonably priced and the portions are HUGE! Plus they are open until 9:30pm, a great meal right after watching a movie upstairs. Here is what we tried: *Gyoza - Okay, but I wish they had fried them a little longer so that you get the crispy crunch when you bite into them. All of the necessary ingredients for the dipping sauce are provided on the table (shoyu, vinegar, and chili oil). Free gyoza with meal when you come in 2-5pm. *Chicken Katsu Curry - WOWZA, is that a double portion? This entree has two rows of chicken katsu with plenty of curry sauce all over for only $8.95. A deal for sure. I can see why my uncle liked this dish. The chicken katsu was super crispy and light. The curry is sweet and almost stew-like with the carrots and onions mixed in. This is the perfect choice for a growing teenage boy with an endless appetite like my brother. *A Combo - I chose to get a combo because I like trying a lot of different food rather than one big helping of the same thing. This combo came with a mini ramen, fried rice, and 4 gyoza. The ramen is just large enough to get a good taste, but it was nothing special. The real winner of this combo was the fried rice. So oily and so tasty, I love it! The fried rice was actually a hearty serving and I couldn't finish it... more for later :) Also for $8.95! *Shoyu Ramen - My dad didn't like the mushy noodles but I think he was expecting more saimin consistency. The soup is pretty salty so make sure to drink plenty of H2O. I think that most of the dishes are $8.95 and you get tons of food. Be prepared to bring some of it back home! Ramen-Ya could be a hit-or-miss depending on what you order, but the chicken katsu curry and the fried rice were the faves for us.

Service is good, but the ramen isn't what a ramen conoseur would recommend. I will say the Gyoza was very good, but I came expecting great Ramen. Right now my best bet for authentic Japanese food in Maui is Itzakaya Matsu in Kihei.

We'd has so much Hawaiian food we decided to grab some Japanese. We were excited when we saw ramen and didn't check out yelp reviews before we went. We lucked out when we walked into a ramen shop at ala moana on Oahu so we were hoping for the same luck. We went during happy hour which is 2-5pm where they give you 4 free gyozas and that was probably the best part. The noodles were decent, but the soup and the pork in my cha siu ramen was SO salty. The pork wasn't tender at all and although they gave quite a bit of pork, I only are a piece because it was just too salty. We were hopeful, but this was pretty disappointing ramen.

I'm a regular here. And by regular, I mean AT LEAST once a week. The food is really good and the prices are downright excellent. I mean, for 8 bucks, you get a meal that fills you up and then some. I find all of the Ramen and Udon dishes are quite tasty, although my favorite is the Chicken Katsu Ramen (or Udon). The gyoza and Mochiko chicken are also tasty, as is the Curry. The only downsides to this place, are the size, location, and sometimes the service. This restaurant is SMALL. It is always crowded. There are very few places on Maui that serve the variety of Japanese noodle dishes at the price and speed of this place. Consequently, expect it to be crowded. On the bright side, the turnover rate at the tables is usually very fast, so even if you have to wait, it's usually not more than 5 to 10 minutes. The location is also a bit off. It's in the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center, but it's no where near the food court and, unlike the other stand alone eateries, it faces into the mall and has no external signs to denote it's location. This might not be a problem for most people, but a first timer could get lost, I guess. The service is also very hot and cold. Sometimes the staff are quick, corteous, and really tend to your needs. Other times, it feels like they are ignoring you and that it's an inconvience to them that they have to serve you. Overall, for the price, speed, and taste, I recommend this place. Expect to get a decent meal at a decent price and quickly. But be prepared to be in a crowded joint with a staff that may or may not be on it that day.

Usually when I have the time, I'll stop by for a quick bite. Service here is usually quick, but lately I've been observing more and more customers having to wave down a waitress for just about anything- getting their order in, asking for more water and even asking to be seated. Just last night, there was a few customers waiting for an open table at the front door. A waitress came by, didn't say a word and shut the door on them. I eyed up the big ramen bowl on this trip and asked for no corn. Little did I know there was massive amounts of cabbage under the chicken katsu, pork, bamboo shoots, seaweed, kamabo and egg. There was more cabbage than noddles! Tge broth did taste all that great either. It didn't taste right and I was completely turned off to it. The bowl was so big, I could have split it with someone. In addition to, I had to keep asking the waitress for water which took forever and a day for her to get. I've had better experiences here in the past, but I would think twice about coming again. Quality just isn't here. This place is on the smaller side and gets filled up pretty fast, so be sure to anticipate a wait. If you can, check them out during their Goyza "Happy Hour" between 2p-5p. Free Goyza with your meal purchase, for dining in and take out.

While on our honeymoon, my wife and I were watching this PBS special on Ramen that was made in Japan. A whole hour on the inner most details and culture of Ramen in Japan. Needless to say, we were drooling on the floor and haunted, instantly craving Ramen on a "must have you now" basis. So, turns out, there aren't many ramen houses on the island, but Ramen Ya was listed, and got some good ratings. They were just what we needed! I ordered the gigantic bowl of everything ramen, and my wife got the chicken katsu, both were FANSTASTIC. We actually ended up going back on our way to the airport, picked up another chicken katsu, I burned the entire roof of my mouth (wish I had the photo of that still), but did it stop me or even slow me down, I think not. I need to get back to the island. I love the island pace of life.

Okay so I finally got a little time in my life to check this spot out. I've always been really surprised by the lack of ramen spots in Maui considering almost everyone here is at least part Asian! I'm giving this a 4 star rating based on the local competition. I had the combo 1 which came with a small ramen, chicken katsu on white rice and 4 piece gyoza. It seemed like the best value at $10 considering a bowl of ramen by itself was $9. I was happy with my ramen for sure. It was shoyu based broth, with a slice of pork, and I tossed some spices in it :D. Yeah I like my Asian spicy....... The gyoza wasn't amazing or anything, but good for Maui. The chicken katsu was interesting......... It actually had a curry sauce on it instead of the usual katsu sauce. I saw this on the menu and was eager to try it out. It was pretty good and I would probably get it again. This place is in the mall so the atmosphere isn't anything special. The server was average and the price was reasonable. I will return I'm sure. 4 stars based on Maui life, but in any other city it would just be a 3 star.

Ramen Ya is located in the Kaahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului right outside of the entrance to Macy's (perfume department). It's not a big place but the prices are reasonable and there are not too many places on island where you can get Ramen. With that being said, here's the lowdown on Ramen Ya: Food: I usually have the chicken katsu curry there as I am a big fan of curry (and as I mentioned earlier, not too many places to get it. If you eat there from 2 p.m - 5 p.m., they have a "happy hour" where they bring you a free plate of gyoza with each meal. They also have a kids menu which includes a free drink. My son loves the pork fried rice. Service: Once you get in (they get busy during the lunch hour), you are immediately give a menu and your drink order is taken. We eat here at least twice a month and we've always felt that they do a good job taking care of the customers. There were times when they were very busy, but they still did a good job meeting our needs. The waitresses are friendly and are more than willing to meet your needs whether it be seating, food, or anything else. When you leave, you can be sure you'll get a thank you and a smile. Atmosphere: As I mentioned earlier, it's a small restaurant that can seat about 30 people at most. The tables there are meant for 4 people, but they will arrange the seating to accommodate larger groups. You can opt to eat at a bar type of seating where you are watching the cooks prepare the food. Most people go to get a quick bite to eat, so you won't see people kicking their feet up and hanging out for hours. It's your typical lunch time eatery where people come and go all day. Although they are open during dinner hours, there is only one menu. Bottom line: If you're in the mood for ramen, curry, and those types of foods at an affordable price, Ramen Ya is probably your best bet as there's not a whole lot of selection of this kind in central Maui or Maui for that matter. DISCLAIMER: If you're a fine dining connoisseur and are far above eating at these types of places, then run...far, far away as this will surely disappoint you. However, if you're looking for a decent meal at an affordable price, then check it out. If you do go there, try the chicken katsu curry or the miso ramen. Happy eating!

Larger portions than expected for price. Combos are a good deal if your not hungry enough to finish off a big bowl of ramen. Broth is a little bland, but a splash of shoyu does nicely. Location is small, for the most part the staff is friendly.

Daaaaang! Thats what we said when my brother, my dad AND I all got the Big Bowl of ramen from ramen ya. The thing was humongous! All three of us could have easily shared one bowl. There was pork Katsu pieces, corn, bamboo, seaweed, kamaboko, egg, meat pieces and plenty of noodles in our bucket sized bowls. However, quantity doesn't trump quality. The broth was no where as complex as some other ramens that I've had in LA. The noodles were a little soggy and didn't make me wanna eat more. But if you're hungry, and I mean really hungry, go try and eat the big bowl. It should be a food eating contest because the waitress said that she's never seen anyone finish the entire bowl. When I packed mine up to go, I had to use 2(!) soup containers just to fit it all in. Side note: it gets really crowded and NOISY in the small restaurant and it's located in an indoor mall next to Macy's.

If you're going for ramen- it's a less than one star review. People on yelp were not kidding about this place. I got a combo which came with gyoza, shio ramen, and chicken katsu with curry sauce. It was a great deal for the price. My husband had the same combo but with the fried rice. Everything was great and plentiful, except the Horrible ramen. Read- once again, that the noodles were mush. The broth tasted like it came out of a packet. I barely touched it. The sides were great and service was friendly- just do not get the ramen. Not worth even trying - believe the reviewers.

This is by far my favorite restaurant on Maui. The place is small and usually crowded but the service is always quick and the people are very friendly and will remember your face and order if you pop in a few times. You get plenty of food with your order and the pricing isn't bad. Is it super authentic? No. But it's still a really nice place to go and I've never been disappointed here. This isn't a gourmet place. It's good if you want a casual (if not quick, I'm usually in and out in much less than a half hour) meal. They also have a free gyoza happy hour so you can get your basic potstickers/dumplings if nothing else.

Good food... HORRIBLE SERVICE. First, the lady working the front pointed us to our seat and said "over there in the back" and gave us no menus. I waited ten minutes before finally asking for one. It took twenty minutes for someone to finally come and ask us if we were ready. I got my meal within ten minutes of ordering, but my grandpas ramen came out 25 minutes after mine. Worst service ever. I understand it was lunch time and it was busy, but that is no excuse.

I am not going to candy coat this...this was the worst ramen I have ever had in my ENTIRE life! The broth was horrific & the noodles were overcooked. Even the bean sprouts were bad. I could have made a better noodle soup at home from an instant packet! Also, the environment & service is uncomfortable to say the least: screaming babies, scoffing waitresses. Never again.

Yes, this place doesn't have extraordinary curry or ramen and their katsu is "meh" BUT, for the price it is good especially for Maui. There aren't a lot of ramen and curry places on Maui for this cheap and for that fact I give this place 4 stars. I prefer Curry House curry or Koko Ichiban curry, but for the quantity and price this place is decent. I don't come here to order ramen because they serve a lot and it is not extraordinary, but it's decent for the price.

They give a huge portion of chicken katsu curry, and it's very tasty and nicely prepared. Their ramen broth and noodles are pretty good, and the gyoza is fab.

Eh. This food was not even decent. They have to give away free gyoza to draw people in. Definitely was not on my food list for my Maui vacay, but BF had a ramen craving and we happened to be at the mall. Shoyu ramen was meh (how better can I describe it?!) and the fried chicken was tough. Over it. Yummilicious Factor = C

This place was the single worst eating experience we had on both islands of our two week trip. It wasn't just bad, it was inedible. I had the unagi don, which was disgusting. Fatty, slimy, seriously disgusting eel. So sad, because this dish can be so good. Save yourself the time and money, and skip this place. You'll be happy you did.

This place is good!!! We were at Ka'ahumanu Center and passed by it a couple times before we went in. We sat at the bar and were able to see the chef do his thang. I ordered the seafood udon and the bf ordered the mini-ramen combo. Like I said before, you can't go wrong with having seafood on Maui. The fish, scallop, and shrimp was so fresh and just melted in your mouth. The ramen noodle was awesome and the fried rice was one of the best we've both had. I love vegetables so I didn't mind the cabbage with my udon at all. It was so good that we stopped by a 2nd time for lunch right before heading to the airport for our flight back home. The guys there were really nice and had promised my bf a Ramen Ya t-shirt like theirs and he was intent on picking it up too.

Curteous services..place was a bit cramp and front door may smack you in the face if you don't watch out. I don't get why so many rate this place as great...the food is basically noodle with a few slice of meat. The broth is the same as what you get from cup of noodles we ate in college. Actually my cup o noodles in college taste better then this. My wife and I couldn't finished the meal. I had the combo..so got a taste of the noodle, rice and gyoza. All below average...nothing here will wow your senses here. If your taste buds are out for an adventure...look elsewhere cause this food is the same you find at your local groceries shrink wrap bag of noodles. Great services...great environment..just not the food I expected.

Convenience, price, and taste... Ramen Ya delivers on all three! Located at Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center, you can have a updated ramen house experience right there as you shop. The ramen here is quite good... although it may not be that super-niche super-special hole-in-the-wall ramen house experience, the quality of each and every bowl I've had here is most certainly good. The only gripe I may have with their recipe for success in a bowl is their unadulterated love affair with bean sprouts. If you don't love bean sprouts, just request that they go light on them, or ask to exclude them altogether. Ramen Ya is not just a ramen shop, mind you. They serve a few Japanese Golden-style curry dishes as well, dish out a decent plate of Mochiko Chicken, offer a cold noodle option, as well as have Chinese-style noodles and fried rice as well. These choices are also blended together in four "Set Meals," where you get a mini-portion of three things for just a little more money than a basic bowl of ramen. All-in-all, Ramen Ya is an excellent option that is centrally located, easy to find, and delicious to eat at. Good price, decent food!

Great Dinner after a long day of hiking Hana side. I was going to just get Fried Rice but changed it to the Combo A with Fried rice last min because my Boyfriend suggested I try the Gyoza... .Sooo good! Way more food then I expected and we had tons of leftovers to take home. It was busy, Saturday Night around 7pm and we got our food very fast! even though it was a full restaurant everyone looked like they were getting their food fast and enjoying themselves. The kitchen staff was very fast and efficient, I appreciated the open kitchen window, we got to see our food being made! Only thing that could have made it better was Shiracha :( But the waitress did bring me some of their hot Chili paste which was good and was pretty much what I was looking for, Friendly staff and great food, We will be back :)

Staff wasn't too friendly. Service was way below average. Food was okay at best. The curry dish needed WAY more curry or cut the rice portion in half. The Ramen noodles were overcooked. Food wasn't terrible but based on service and overall taste, I'd pass.

Good service everytime. I've eaten here more times than I can count. My favorites are the kimchi fried rice, katsu udon, and the Katsu curry. Portions are huge. Prices are great. Big bowl ramen is nothing special. Complimentary gyoza during happy hour is great. Can feed 4 people for under $30 cause portions are so hefty. Love this place.

I love tonkatsu. I love curry rice. So naturally I love katsu-curry - rice topped with tonkatsu which is then topped with curry. So good. This is what is commonly referred to as "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts". I got the chicken katsu curry which was petty good. Huge portion. Almost twice as big as some other places. Curry was a dark and rich beef sauce. Chicken was deep fried and greasy. Yum. Shoyu ramen was decent. Good noodles. Too many bean stalks though. The soup was fairly good. Service was quick if not friendly. Prices were decent. "Happy hour" is from 2-5 PM everyday even Sundays. This means free gyoza (4 fried pork and veggie dumplings) with each entree. Let me know if anyone knows of a place that serve katsu-curry in the DC area.

Made my way in on a whim. It looked closed on the outside but was packed inside. Full of locals, must be good. The ramen was super tasty, but the gyoza appetizers were friken amazing. Good prices, great food, ok service. Will definitely be going back if I'm at the mall again.

We came by here to have some lunch. We had some fried rice, curry chicken katsu, and chicken katsu ramen. The fried rice was excellent. It had just the right amount of wok flavor and enough to feed 2-3 people. the curry chicken katsu was good too, but you have to like curry to enjoy it. The chicken katsu ramen was good too, but it had a bit too much "crunchies" in it like sprouts. I would definitely come back for the fried rice and more curry chicken katsu or try the curry beef. During our week on Maui, this was our best meal and reasonably priced too.

A one star review for me, means the food was inedible. Here it mostly was. The gyoza were so-so. I got the Big Bowl: sliced pork and green onions chicken katsu, corn, boiled egg, cabbage and seaweed. I ate less than half of it. The broth was lifeless, the noodles barely passable. The katsu was a bit fatty for my taste. I love ramen, and I was so looking forward to this meal. But this was a complete let down.

OH MY GOD! Ok, we spent all day Sunday doing touristey stuff...drove the Hana Highway all the way around...we (wife, daughter, self) were SUPER hungry...looked for ramen...the other high rated ramen place was closed so we found this place and I've been dreaming about it since. Honestly, the ramen was good (i've had better and much worse), but they had SPAM KATSU CURRY! Yes, that's right, spam katsu curry and it was good. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED U TRY IT!

We miss Ramen Ya so much. We live in Portland now and haven't found a good ramen place to replace the friendly and attentive service and amazing dashi and noodles from Ramen Ya. We also miss their gyoza and fried rice. We used to go at least once a week, often getting our order to go. I would call in and the folks there would recognize my voice and had our order memorized. The portions are huge here but the leftovers for breakfast the next morning is almost the best part.

Ramen noodles here is ok. When they originally open a few years ago it was really good. I just recently went and ordered katsu curry (chicken). They were very generous with the portion they give. Could feed 2 easily. Service was good and fast. Go during their happy hour, free dumplings with order!

This is the lowdown about Ramen-Ya. Don't get the ramen. Seriously. The broth is ok but the noodle are way overcooked. If you like noodles on the soft side, then go ahead and order the ramen. The garnishes in the ramen are good but they put way too many bean sprouts. I mean way too many. One reviewer commented it was a 1 to 1 ratio. They are not far off. What you do go to Ramen-Ya for is the chicken katsu curry rice, the beef curry rice, or the mochiko chicken with a substitution of fried rice. The curry is Japanese style curry and very tasty. The fried rice is light and pretty tasty too. The gyoza is pretty good, not great, but they prepare it right-steamed with one side crispy. They give free gyoza between 2-5 pm which is a score. Oh did I mention that everything is under $10 and the portions are huge? Talk about cheap eats. One thing good about Ramen-Ya is that they also have combo sets. They also do substitutions (like swapping out won ton soup for ramen in the set) which is a plus. The food comes out very fast and always hot. Service is quick and prompt. Drink refills are free. Feel free to give it a try, it will only cost you about $10. Ok maybe $12 if you include tip....

I had great expectations as I was really hoping for some good noodles. However, the spicey seafood ramen as mostly cabbage and bean sprouts served with a very bland broth......no complexity at all.....tasted like shoyu salty water. The gyozas needed to be cooked longer to crisp up. As I looked at other people's food, looks like the michico chicken looked good and the katsu looked like large portions. Wished I had order either one of those.

Great hole-in-the-wall place. One of those cheap, but good food places. I guess I would agree that the gyoza was not too great. But the fried rice and ramen were pretty good. Big portions - ended up having to take the rest back to the hotel for later.

The yelp reviews are all over the place on this joint. I took it for what it is. Cheap eats. Had the chicken katsu which was tender and moist with a nice crispy crust. The curry was good but not shout out great. The portion was easily enough for two good eaters. The fried noodles were just okay, humungous portions but not really tasty. The service was brisk and impersonal but not unfriendly. Would I come back? Sure if I was really hungry and in the neighborhood. Very local place, good value for hungry eaters.

When going out with the girls, it's always a challenge to answer the question "where do you want to eat" This past weekend we decided on Ramen Ya. I regretted that decision with the first bite. I love a good Mochiko Chicken, but theirs sorely disappointed. So, I figured at least I could fill up on the macaroni salad - wrong! It was just macaroni and mayo, not a veggie in sight. My friends that had noodle dishes were happier, but not by much.

This place was excellent. We too had the mini Ramen combo, which I highly suggest. We loved their fried rice and gyoza and their ramen was only 3.5 of 5 in my opinion. Everything else was as good as it gets. Definitely a place to try.

I had to stay the night for work so not being familiar with Maui, I had to find my way around. I noticed there was a shopping mall near my hotel so what a great place to start! I didn't know what to expect and I must say, this mall was pretty nice. Most parts looked brand new or remodeled. I walked around and around trying to decide where I wanted to eat. I passed this Ramen place twice and was finally drawn back. When I walked thru the frosted doors, I saw some familiar faces! It was staff from the Genki Ramen in Mililani! I wondered where they went. It was great to see familiar faces in an unknown place. I spoke with two of the wait staff that use to serve us at Mililani and they said they moved to Maui a few months ago to help open their 2nd site. There grand opening was in July. The owner's sister is now running the one in Mililani. The Maui restaurant is definitely bigger in size, accomodating about 50 persons. And it's conveniently located on the lower level next to Macy's. I ordered my usual - the mini ramen combo. The broth was perfect! I hate to say this but the food here tastes better. The staff received many compliments from the customers for this was their first time dining here. This ramen house will definitely become a huge success, if not already.

others have said it - portion is decent. Nothing good about this place. I was hungry and craving for ramen after I landed in Maui, so I picked something nearby. It's a chinese run ramen joint. The place is filthy; service is mediocre at best; the cha-sui (fatty pork) was cold. I had to get a Jamba Juice to wash the lingering saltiness from the broth. Worst Ramen experience ever.

first off, the workers are friendly. the food is good and they're pretty quick with service. I eat inside sometimes, and most of the time I call in my order since I go there for lunch a lot and I can walk there. I love the kids menu, the portions are pretty big, i always order the kids fried rice(no peas) and still have enough for later.

Great food! My husband and I eat at Ramen Ya about once a week. I think it's definitely a hit with the locals as it has an excellent Japanese flair. I've ordered the Curry Ramen which was fantastic and very flavorful. I've also had the Cold Somen Salad that was also very good. My favorite by far is the combo meal that has a small ramen, gyoza, and fried rice. I don't understand the poor reviews on this site I've read as the food is very tasty and very affordable. The service is good too. This place is definitely worth a try.

Whoever thinks this is Ramen im sorry but I would have to pass on this one. Try to concentrate more on quality and flavors than quantity.

We go here about once a week. Every time the food is consistently wonderful and the service superb. Between the three of us, we get gyoza ramen, wonton ramen, gyoza, fried rice. All of it is delish. Finishing a bowl of their ramen is challenging. I always end up taking some home which makes for a nice treat for next day's lunch or a breakfast hangover cure. :P They also do to-go orders and have a good early bird special of free gyoza.
