Let me start off by saying how much I love and miss their Brick-Pressed Sandwich!! Up until they removed this delicious item, it was all that I would order from here. A good amount of prosciutto, salami, blue cheese and watercress sandwiched between two pieces of perfectly toasted ciabatta. Served alongside a handful of Maui Potato Chips and roasted corn & red pepper relish, it was the perfect meal. Their delicious corn relish is no longer on the menu, it's been replaced by a sweet coleslaw......I hate cole slaw. There has been some substitutes that tried to take the place of my beloved BPS, but it's not the same. I gave their Mortadella & Ham Panini (fatty/marbled italian bologna) a shot but was disappointed. There wasn't enough filling and the mortadella tasty too irony for some reason. This item is also no longer on the menu. HOUSE SMOKED SALMON PANINI ($10): Tried this the last time and thought it was pretty good. The salmon was tasty (didn't get a lot of the smokiness though) and served with a dill-dijon mayonaise. yelp.com/biz_photos/xzQo… I couldn't really taste (or see) much dill in the aioli but their salmon was sliced sort of thick, and they give you a good amount. Their "panini" was not toasted long enough, it was too soft for my liking. yelp.com/biz_photos/xzQo… TURKEY CHILI ($7 for a bowl, $4 for a cup): A dish worth mentioning, but it can be a hit or miss at times bc it can get too salty and it's not served with any crackers or bread. yelp.com/biz_photos/xzQo… They don't skimp on the ground turkey here, my many orders of chili have always been thick and chunky. It's a meal in itself so if you're planning on ordering other items during your meal, I suggest getting a cup of chili instead of the bowl. I like mines without the pico de gallo (don't like raw onions). ***FYI: They only price list the chili and soups as bowl portions. They don't tell you that it's also avail in a smaller cup portion, so you have to ask for it.*** My friend Norine usually gets the 'NM Sampler.' For $10 you get half a sandwich (choice of wither the chicken or tuna salad), a cup of their soup of the day and some fresh fruits. There's also this jello-like flan that comes with it, though I've never tried it. The California Cobb Salad ($10) is huge (actually all of their salads are)! This salad is big enough to serve 2 people. You can never go wrong with a mountain of grilled chicken, hard boiled eggs and bacon, drowned in gorgonzola cheese dressing.

Had the roast beef sandwich. It was a bit chewy and just a little lack luster. There was one waiter for the entire restaurant and he was nice, but came around very seldom and only for the bare necessities. I didnt necessarily have a bad experience, but I wouldn't go back. I expected a bit more from neiman marcus

3.5, cute place to go if you want some fresh, light lunch options while shopping. Located inside Neiman Marcus, at Ala Moana. Shopping makes me so tired & hungry. This is a good place for various sandwiches and salads. There's a soup of the day for $6 (the day we went my friend got this cream of mushroom one and enjoyed it), and turkey chili for $7 (I tried this and it was good!). We also each got a salad....chinese chicken and the green papaya salad with chicken. The salads were ok, I think I should have tried the cobb or the nicoise one. A plate of the bruchetta and this incredibly yummy looking panini passed by us and made me regret getting the salad...I need to try those next time....and the delicious looking fruit tarts we saw on our way out. It can add up for a "casual" lunch (ex: sandwich or salad and a small cup of soup and a beverage might run you around $25+), but it's Neiman Marcus, so no surprise there. Best parts in my opinion? The helpful calorie index on the menu, and they have Voss! I love Voss. Sparkling is the way to go....only $3!

The Mermaid Bar is a classy-casual lunch spot for those who want to enjoy delicious and simple soups, salads, and sandwiches in a more private setting. I'd say it's a slight upgrade from NM's first floor Espresso Bar, which is very open and not private/enclosed at all. The Mermaid Bar is tucked away in the children's clothing section on the 2nd floor of Neiman Marcus, on the "Ewa" side of the building. The food is simple and tasty. And if you're down for having a simple lunch in a slightly upscale setting, this place is definitely for you. It's like fake living-the-good-life, almost-baller-status, fronting, etc. Well, not quite. But almost. WARM ROAST BEEF - $11 yelp.com/biz_photos/xzQo… Roast beef, melted swiss, balsamic arugula, creamy horseradish on warm ciabatta. Served with chips and coleslaw. And 920 calories for you calorie counters. In my opinion, this is a great deal for Neiman Marcus. This sandwich is filling and flavorful. The arugula really gave this sammy a nice pop of flavor. I would definitely order this again. APPLEWOOD SMOKED SALMON NIÇOISE - $14.50 yelp.com/biz_photos/xzQo… The salad with pretty much everything: roasted potatoes, green beans, artichoke hearts, tomato, kalamata olives, and more. The red wine vinaigrette was light and tasty. (You know the dressing is good when you ask for extra. Hehe.) ORANGE-GINGER ALE PUNCH - $3.50 After having a sip of my bff's punch, I had to order my own. It's very good and quite refreshing. Well worth the $3.50. VERDICT I am a fan. The food is tasty and surprisingly, the prices aren't ridiculous. I mean, $11 for a sandwich may seem high, but you've got to consider the ingredients and the atmosphere. The restaurant is clean and the service is great. No real complaints here. Yelp 365 - #309/365

The restaurant looked rather well kept but food stains were visible on the chairs wooden parts and the back fabric was stained from heavy use. To me this is not acceptable from a Neiman Marcus restaurant. The temperature at our table was uncomfortable with the cold air from the A/C falling directly on our shoulders. While the level of service was good, I was expecting fresher and higher quality ingredients. For instance, most salad ingredients lacked taste (none of them were marinated) while some were clearly not fresh (rotten mixed greens). Salad dressing were bland and disappointing. Going to a Neiman Marcus restaurant, I was expecting an higher level of lunch experience: plate presentation was unimaginative while the dining-ware and furniture beyond more to a mall cafeteria than an upscale department store. At this point it is hard to recommend the Mermaid Bar while better lunch options exist in the mall.

Usually the only reason I go to Neiman Marcus is to use the bathroom. No ack, everyone does it! Never been here before and my cousins suggested it for lunch. I ordered the lemon shrimp salad and was disappointed: romaine lettuce, six shrimp that were tough and flavorless, a few limp artichoke hearts, and some red veggies with a sprinkling of quinoa. $15, and the $3 caesar at Costco is more satisfying. I give 3 stars because my cousin's sandwich was great (forgot which one) and our waiter was really accommodating and split the sandwich order on 2 separate plates AND gave full sides of chips, slaw, and a pickle on each plate. Cappuccino was great, too. Nice atmosphere but the salads are meh. Service is great.

Located inside Neiman Marcus- Another great lunch place! My usual is the Mediteranean sandwich- yumm! Some people like it for the "make-your-own salad"- you tell them what you want in it. The service is great and fast!

I would have given this place 4 but they took my favorite sandwich off the menu! Since then I haven't been back. Overall good place for lunch. They have specials everyday which offer a little more than the basic sandwich combo. They do have really good desserts, but I am still sad they got rid of my favorite sandwich.

First time here it wasn't to crowded or anything. I came on my own so this was really a solo lunch. I got seated quickly and server came took my drink order and everything came out quite quickly. The sandwich is pretty good. I liked that it wasn't so huge and messy. It was the right size and enough for me to enjoy. I ordered the orange ginger ale punch and the warm roast beef sandwich. Overall nice place for a quick lunch will def be back here.

I met a friend here for lunch today. It wasn't crowded at all, but it took a while to get seated. We both decided to order the vegetable panini. It took a long time for the food to come out, I would say around 30-45 minutes. Even the guy sitting next to us told the waiter, "I thought you forgot about me" by the time his food came out. Overall, the food was just ok, totally not worth the wait. Just like Mariposa...way overrated, bad service, and a bit overpriced. The Mermaid Bar is more reasonably priced than Mariposa, but still, the price doesn't match the quality of food. Head over to Nordstrom Cafe instead, where the food and customer service is way better.

The salads and sandwiches are sadly nothing special but I come here for the NM chicken salad served with orange soufflé. I was addicted to this dish when I lived in SF, only the served it with a lemon soufflé which I prefer. However orange is better than nothing! The chicken salad is 98.5% chicken with a little mayo and seasonings tossed in to coat. You get a generous scoop, a slice of banana bread, a side of fresh fruit and a little dish of dressing that is delish! It may be for the fruit but I put it on everything. Mmm...so good!

This review is in regards to their private event services. Cousin's having a baby boy! They wanted a no-fuss (aka. no cleaning required) baby shower so they planned one here at The Mermaid Bar. Apparently The Mermaid Bar is open for private events in the Evenings, and all-day Sunday when they are closed to the public. Mermaid Bar provides a preset menu, and then the guests choose beforehand so that the kitchen can have all your food prepped and ready! The menu selection is super simple, but a good enough selection for your guests. On the particular day we had our baby shower, we had a choice of the: (1) Tuscan Chicken Melt on Ciabatta Bread, (2) Rosemary and Garlic Roasted Pork Chop, or (3) Bistro Salad that comes with Chicken, Apples, and a vinaigrette. The sandwich was a bit bland, but still satisfying. What i really should have ordered was the Pork Chop! My cousin was one out of 20 of us who decided to order the pork chops and MAN, what regret! Her dish came with a generously cut portion of juicy meat, over a generously served portion of risotto. MMMM-- what a mistake I made to order the "healthy" option. Drinks are provided, and at the end of our meal, every guest was served a sorbet with 3 flavors, mango, raspberry, and lemon. YUM. I had an awesome time, not to mention parking surprisingly easy to find~ Overall, this is a great venue to consider about it if you are hosting a small event. I am not sure about the guest size limitation, so those are things you might want to check with the restaurant! P.S. The restaurant during public hours is a way more economical alternative to mariposa if you are trying to impress for a lunch date!

This rating is for the oxtail soup because it is absolutely amazing. Ok so mermaid bar is located on the second floor of Neiman Marcus by the children's clothing. It is a hidden gem if you are a fan of oxtail soup. The restaurant is a little room with an open service area where you can see some parts of your meal being prepared. I like the clean crisp look that is so typical Neiman Marcus. Now they have a secret menu with specials for everyday of the week. But Thursdays for their oxtail soup are the best! Go early because it fills up fast(like every table is full and has at least one oxtail soup on it). So first they bring out a plate with all the fixings for your soup- a scoop of rice, grated ginger, hot mustard, cilantro, and soy sauce. Then a piping hot bowl of their oxtail soup comes out with on-choy, shiitake mushrooms, baby bok choy, and the lovely pieces of oxtail in the most flavorful broth. The broth tastes like it is been slow cooked for hours. The died shiitake mushrooms are plump and soft from soaking in the flavorful broth. So what you do is you add whatever from the fixing plate into your soup bowl. I put about half the ginger in the bowl and the other half in the soy sauce, which I dip the meat in. The meat is soft and cooked nicely but had a little too much fat on them for my liking. I know that the fat is key to making a good broth and it is great so I don't mind picking the extra far I don't want to eat off. Plus I don't mind a little fat any ways ;). So summary for the story, this oxtail soup is amazing and I will be returning on Thursdays for it!! Now my sister in our group was the only one who didn't order an oxtail soup, and she ordered the smoked salmon pizza. It was interesting but had very sharp flavors. We expected it to have lox on it but this was little chunks of dry smoked salmon, with goat cheese, and arugula. She regretted not getting the oxtail soup!! So go to mermaid bar - on Thursday and get the oxtail soup!!

We recently stopped here for lunch following a little post-Christmas clothes shopping with the kids. If you are parents, you know what I'm talking about when it comes to trying to buy your kids the right size clothes when they are both going through a growth spurt...ka-ching! But before you think I'm a blue blooded New England Brahmin or trust fund baby, just know that I can't afford to actually buy anything at this store...well except for a wallet once and some Christmas candy. However, my wife and I decided that our children's table manners were sufficiently passable to "do lunch" at this casual, quiet, calm place. You may have caught the drift that I can't stand crowds, which is why we wandered in here, rather than the noisy food court on the street level of Ala Moana Center. I had a really delicious sandwich with salad and iced tea. The server was friendly and attentive. An attractive young model came in with a nicely tailored black dress and classy jewelry, whereupon she demonstrated some of these pricey "baubles" to us. I don't know if she could tell that we really couldn't afford such luxuries, but we were friendly to her, which is more than I can say for some women who looked very mean when she came to their table. You could say it was a "guy thing," to be friendly to her, but she really was a sweet person, and my wife thought she was nice, too. It was not too expensive, and to eat lunch in peace and quiet within such a busy shopping center is my idea of a little bit of heaven.

Voss. Best part about The Mermaid Bar is that they sell Voss! Remember that one time Hilary Duff got mad because a restaurant didn't serve Voss? Ever since then, I simply had to see what the fuss was about and got hooked on Voss. If I ever land a date with Hilary Duff, I will take her to The Mermaid Bar because they have Voss. I will order the salmon salad and sparkling Voss. Edit: my friends said I should say something else in my review other than Voss. Okay so here goes ... The view is calming, but no mermaids in sight. Well, at least not when I was there.

i'm not really a soup/salad/sandwich-for-lunch kind of person; if i have a choice, i will usually skip lunch and just wait until dinnertime to eat something. But since I was being treated to lunch, why not... And yes, Mermaid Bar has only soups/salads/sandwiches and it's only open for lunch. But it was very good, not gonna lie. I mean, yeah, it's in neiman marcus, so it was never gonna be terrible. But still, they make a mean cobb salad--really fresh, not too light but not too filling. All in all, they make 5 or 6 different salads, a handful of sandwiches, etc. And you even have the option of making your own salad--which the person i was with ordered--choosing your own lettuce, choosing from an embarrassment of wonderful toppings (you choose up to 7), different dressings, all that stuff. Just a quaint lunch place with a relaxed yet classy enough atmosphere to go with good salads; i never felt too neiman-marcused out eating there, if that makes any sense at all

Been eating here for years, literally years. Brought all my relatives for the thursday, oxtail soup. It's the best cuz it's fresh, not frozen bits like Zippy's. My tip to secure your bowl of oxtail soup. Just come when they open at 11 am, don't be late. Also did you know, when Mariposa was open (renovations now), you could order the popover's down here and also the at the espresso bar. That's not the only things you can order from Mariposa, but it's my favorite. Can't say it really goes with oxtail soup though.

I like the Mermaid Bar. Not as wanna-be bouji like Mariposa, not as cramped as the little coffee/pastry shop on the first floor. Whenever we want to take a break from shopping or just the madness of Ala Moana in general, we opt for the Mermaid Bar. See, it may seem like the eating/dining options at Ala Moana are plentiful--and it is--but when you really break it down, there is the Food Court and that whole Romano's-Paradise Burgers-Bubba Gumps-CPK area. In layman's terms that means crowded, long-wait, over-the-top noisy, blah service. Of course, there's Morton's/Longhi's and some other places, but you see what I'm getting at. I'm willing to pay a few more bucks for peace and quiet, air-conditioning, no 17 year old hostess with too much eyeliner telling me "the wait is gonna be about 15-30 minutes," and yummy food. And don't let the fact that MB is located in NM (I couldn't resist) dissuade you from coming b/c you think it will be over-priced. I got the lunch combo--a bowl of tomato-bacon soup (YUM) and half a tuna sandwich/panini (white albacore tuna) and fruits for about $10.50 (it might have been $10.95)--you can get chicken instead of the sandwich if you like. The orange-ginger ale drink is refreshingly tasty too. No it wasn't Anthony Bourdain worthy, but if you're looking for foodie type food, then why are you eating at the mall? It's better than average and it hit the right spot and replenished the energy I needed to finish up my shopping. Two thumbs up :-)

I have got to be the world's worst planner. I got myself and my girlfriend very hyped up to try this place. The idea came from a rainy night not that long ago. She wanted soup and sandwiches and I didn't know where to go so I turned to Yelp. Yelp pointed us out in the direction on the Mermaid Bar. The pictures looked great, the food sounded appetizing and the reviews that I read were stellar. So off we went, and we failed. Twice. The first time I planned it, it was after hours and they were closed. The second time we went early on a Sunday. They aren't open on Sunday. Greeeeaattt... Those two instances didn't deter me. I wanted to eat here... I needed to eat here. So last Thursday we tried again. We succeeded. Sure, we made it there twenty minutes before they closed but the main thing is that we made it. I ordered the chicken club wrap and she had the smoked salmon sandwich. They both came with a small side of coleslaw and potato chips. My wrap was great. There was chicken, bacon, avocado, lettuce, and tomato in it. It was fresh and everything had a nice crispy texture. Well, everything but the chicken I mean. Her smoked salmon was amazing. I know I've been using that word a lot in my reviews lately, but it simply is. The next time we go, I'm ordering that. No questions. The two sandwiches with tax and tip came out to about $25. It might have been a little expensive for lunch but the wait... all three times.. was worth it.

I'm being a bit generous w/the stars but this place has great food but awful service. I ordered a simple salad & soup & it took 45 minutes & it wasn't busy! It's like that every time I go! I should probably just do take out! That is, if that doesn't get screwed up too!

I am a fan of oxtail soup and try to find new places to sample this local dish. Imagine my surprise when I found out there was a restaurant in Neiman Marcus, of all places, that served oxtail soup (see photo). Oxtail is served here on Thursdays and from the looks of the neighboring tables, it is pretty popular. It's not on the menu and they are prone to running out of the soup an hour or so after opening. Nice amount of greens (bok choy and watercress) added to the soup, and only a few peanuts at the bottom. A fair amount of meat in the soup, and all for only $11. Another tasty dish ordered at our table was the Soba Shrimp salad (see photo) which is also recommended. Dining room is not all that big so try to get there before noon.

    - Lasagna on Fridays is my FAVORITE! (don't go too late, it will sell out) - It's pretty quick. - The smell sometimes bothers me (smells like burnt bread). But is not bad. - Good lunch time place.

When I used to work at the mall, my friend Jimmy always raved about the Mermaid Bar. Since I am a huge sucker for cafes I made it a point to try it. I absolutely love simple lunches, such as salads, soups, and sandwiches. With that being said, the Mermaid Bar is a great place to grab a bite while shopping at Ala Moana. (The other great place is Nordstrom Cafe). They have great sandwiches like their paninis and soups. Stop by the Mermaid Bar if you want a light yet delicious meal.

After a couple hours of shopping we came in here for a little rest & a bite to eat ... we shared several items - chicken club wrap, special of the day: beef stew, crab bisque, and a chicken salad sandwich. Everything was very good !! I was not a fan of the mayo coleslaw side but the chips and fruit were good.... service was also good - water, coffee & iced teas were refilled often and they were very kind to my little miss !! We got our energy recharged and were able to get back to shopping !!! * the lady next to us said the oxtail soup & short rib specials are her favorite * so fun to browse the kiddie section ... life size Angelina the Ballerina, rocking horses, pianos, and drum sets all set up for the kids to sample !

Neiman Marcus, Do you guys taste test your food? I was actually surprised that the food I ordered here was not any more exciting than any other food establishment in Hawaii. I've had way more satisfying sandwiches from Andy's in Manoa or Pele's Other Garden on Lanai. Yes, Lanai of all places! I decided on ordering the turkey panini, which turned out to have a skimpy amount of brie cheese, roast turkey, and sliced apples, all pressed in between cranberry-walnut bread. Sounds good yeah? That's what I thought! It was just average tasting and not spectacular. In fact, everyone on our table wanted something other than what they had ordered. Veggie wrap..fail. Oxtail soup..let's see... Oxtail soup is a special on Thursdays. Looking around the room, it was a popular choice. It was what I wished I ordered, but I heard it was a little salty. But, if considering how popular it was, I would consider trying out. It comes with two scoops of white rice, grated ginger, mustard, shoyu on the side and other green veggies in the soup. All for $11. Overall, our general consensus was that the flavors in our dishes did not go well together. The pricing is reasonable, with most sandwiches or wraps ranging from $10-11. Ambiance is also not spectacular, you get a city view of the buildings on Piikoi. Their counter is just a basic, bare bones prep counter. And service? Ha! I will never forget this. Our server asked if we wanted to take our leftovers home. He took my friend's half of a sandwich into the back and presented it to her all packaged up in a box and a paper bag.. Then handed me the wrapping materials for me to do myself! What's with the preferential treatment? Haha.. another story to share and laugh about :)

Love, love, LOVE (did I say LOVE?!) the Mermaid Bar! I always enjoy the Mermaid Bar with a co-worker of mine. While I know most people go for the famous "oxtail soup, a co-worker and I always go and enjoy building and creating our own "salad." And we are talking a "salad" creation that is fit for a queen! You get your choice of p to 7 items to choose from, your choice of salad dressing and a protein. The result is scrumptious, filling and healthy. Ialways leave satisfied and full...but not overly stuffed!

"You don't win friends with salad..!" Bart Simpson's taunting poor Lisa on her decision to become a vegetarian comes to mind when I order my favorite item from the Mermaid Bar - their custom salad for $10.25. Show me the greens! With local island mix as your base, pile on the toppings of your choice (up to 7) such as: *artichoke - for tang *broccoli - for folate *carrots - for color *cucumbers - for crunch *grilled vegetables - for that fake meaty texture of squash/eggplant *shaved radish - for more crunch and color *edamame - eh for fun After rattling off your toppings, it's time to dress them up in your choice of: *gorgonzola *roasted tomato *poppy seed *sherry vinaigrette *balsamic *red wine *dijon I used to roll my eyes at those who ordered their dressings on the side, thinking all frou frou, but wait, I can actually double dunk that piece of broccoli or better yet, actually taste that piece of lettuce all by its naked self....oooh, I get it now :) Maybe it's being on this 7-day detox diet that has made me regard this plate of greens so highly but I was having so much fun eating that salad, relishing every crunchy bite that my toddler cocked his head and asked, "Umma, what you doing?!" Jealous?! Baby, looks like your Umma has made a new friend!

I don't give many 5 star ratings but for this place I will. I've never had a bad meal here and it's one of my all time favorite lunch spots. If it wasn't for my friend who actually shops here (I'm waaay too poor for that. haha) I would've never even ventured into Neiman Marcus (besides the once in a while stint at Mariposa) and found this place. It's on the 2nd floor behind the baby/children section (another reason I would've never discovered this place... I would never be by that section) and it's open from 11-3:30pm, closed on Sundays. There's usually just one server so when it gets busy its hard to get her attention, but the manager always jumps in to help and their so kind it's hard to get mad at them. On their menu they have sandwiches and wraps, such as a medeterranian sandwich with shaved chicken, arugula, tomatoes, etc. and pesto aioli on ciabatta bread (most sandwiches come with this corn and roasted red peppers salsa on the side and are served with Maui chips) which is very yummy. They also have a corn beef sanwich (I'm a sucker for those!), a caprese sandwich (It's called something else on the menu, but that's basically what it is... mozzarella, tomato, and they use pesto aioli), and a NM sampler where you get a cup of the soup of the day (normally just a cup would be $6.75), half a tuna or chicken salad sandwich and fruit for only $9.75. They also have salads like a cobb, or a shrimp salad (which I had today. Awesomeness) for $14 which comes with watercress, cucumber, shrimp and some asian salad dressing. Or you can build your own salad for $9.75 where you get to choose the type of lettuce and up to 7 toppings (with toppings being things like avocado, artichoke hearts, an array of different cheeses, croutons, red onions, tomatoes, etc.) and if you want to add a protein just add $4 and you can pick between grilled shrimp, salmon, and chicken. Just a note, though, the protein will be cold. I don't think they have a full kitchen (like a stove and such) so I think the salmon and stuff are grilled at Mariposa and then brought down. They always have a lunch special which always seems to be meatloaf... but I always just stick to their regular menu. Just a note too, you can hold events here if you want. I once saw them decorating for a party and it was breathtaking.

This unassuming little cafe is probably the only reason you'll ever catch me in Neiman Marcus. At first I thought it would be a pretentious little place where all the elites who weren't upstairs at Mariposa would come to squawk at each other, but it's actually a very casual place. The food is good and the portions are generous. I understand that there's a special on oxtail soup on either Wednesdays or Thursdays and that they sell out super quick. I'm not a big fan of the stuff but I've been told by my dining companions it's quite good. The wait staff is generally very friendly and helpful. I did have an incident two years back where the waiter double-charged my credit card and it took an act of Congress for them to fix the problem. I'm glad, though, that I didn't let that stop me from continuing to frequent Mermaid Bar. Any of the sandwiches are good and if they still have meatloaf, I'd recommend it even if you're on a diet.

A wonderful place for a quick bite to eat. The servers are attentive and service is quick. The menu offers a great selection of sandwiches, salads and the turkey chili is not to be missed! They offer an awesome selection of salad toppings so that you can make a custom salad to suit your taste. Portions are generous and it is well worth the price. I recommend it!

Oh yum! This is where i'll be going to for my Oxtail soup craving! Every Thursday this is the day once a wk when a sandwich shop here turns into a local kine grindz place. They open at 11am sharp although they're nice enough to let you sit if you're just clammoring outside to get in. You can only look at the exorbinantly priced children's clothing so many times before you start drooling on them as you smell the oxtail brewing. The broth is not heavy and salty like most other places and they give you just the right proportions (and i'm a big eater) of oxtail, ong choy (or is it bok choy) and rice. Well, I had to ding them on the rice though - it's a hit or miss on whether they cook the rice correctly and sometimes it seems like they give you day old hard rice or maybe they just didn't add enough water. They get pretty slammed there so we always go early.....and the ambiance of the place is not typical of somewhere you'd get oxtail soup. Think Sex in the City but with Oxtail soup!

People are always gawking at you in the Espresso Bar, and a moth flutters out of your wallet after a meal at Mariposa. What's a modest diner to do? There must be intentional symbolism in the design, because at the Mermaid Bar on the middle floor of Neiman Marcus, one can have a mid-level nosh at mid-range prices. Why spend $30 for a smoked chicken breast upstairs while you can have a shaved one in a sandwich bursting with vine-ripened tomatoes, arugula, and melty mozzarella for $10 right here? Salads are unremarkable so stick to stuff between bread. And avoid peak lunch rush hour, or you'll feel as if you're being ignored by your server. Just dig into Thursday's legendary oxtail soup, sip a glass of lilikoi-infused iced tea, and relax under the illusion you're being luxurious.

I always enjoy the treat of lunch here. The Duke of Windsor Sandwich is outstanding. The little tub of corn relish that comes with all the sandwiches is really good. I like to sit at the counter and watch the planes take off or land at the airport. It's a little expensive, but the quality is great. The Panini Antipasto sandwich is salty goodness at it's best, but you'll drink a lot of water for the rest of the day.

Pros: Great service, easy menu, and delicious options. NM chicken sandwich sampler is a great option. Cons: It has minimum seating and can fill up quickly. Mermaid bar is located in Neiman Marcus, 2nd floor. Cool simple theme and the food leaves you feeling refreshed. Some menu items are seasonal or change from year to year. When you're there, check out the bathroom too. It's quite spacious....

Convenient and casual cafe in NM. Good place to dine if you're in NM but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.

To be honest, I was drawn in by the name (aside from the fact that it is located in one of my favorite stores). My gf and I had body treatments done at the Ho'ala Spa and decided to stop in for lunch. A tad bit disappointed by this place. Decor was plain, rather boring. I guess I was expecting to see a beautifully tiled mermaid or sea-themed decor in the restaurant considering it is NM. The service was kind of weird. Waiter wasn't very attentive. Lots of side chatter at the counter amongst staff. We also weren't greeted or seated. There wasn't any direction as you entered the restaurant. Hostess stand was in front but no host. I probably wouldn't eat here again. Food was ok. Limited selection. Nothing special.

I confess I love Mermaids! No, not the scary types on the Discovery Channel, I mean the Daryl Hannah types like in the movie, Splash! Gosh I love that classic! Oh, and BTW, I also love... THE MERMAID BAR! This semi-secret spot is semi-hidden in Neiman Marcus! See, that's why it's so hidden because not everyone shops at NM's! The wannabe super models & typical metrosexuals, some upper-middle class tourists might stroll in, of course the flock of Japanese tourists too, oh and the occasional locals who come to NM's for the leopard print briefs and the cuisine! Yes, the cuisine! No, I prefer not to wear leopard print anythings, but I do admit I enjoy Mariposa, Expresso Coffee Bar, and The Mermaid Bar all located within upscale Neiman Marcus! Let's talk... THE MERMAID BAR! I've actually known about this place for some time now. My ex-girlfriend (the clingy one) worked on the top floor selling $1000 European eggs and I would visit her for lunch sometimes. The Mermaid Bar was the more "casual-nice" of the restaurants in NM's, so we would meet up here to grab a bite or two. The Menu is quite extensive for a "casual-nice" spot! If you dig quality sandwiches, soups (many claim the Ox-tail soup here is as good as any), and salads you might give this place a go! Surprisingly it's not as pricey as one might expect. Prices are in the $10-$14 range, which is comparable to most "casual-nice" spots out there. The bonus here is there's also a pocket-friendly Keiki menu, choices run about $8 for the kiddies! Oh, and let's not forget the delicious in-house desserts too! On my last visit, a week ago, I stopped off for a grilled chicken panini. I love the sandwiches here which comes with a generous serving of chips and pickle or fruit. You can substitute a small salad instead of the chips for the health nuts! I usually wash it down with bottomless iced tea or Hawaiian Aqua! All served on real China NM plates! Nice, hah?! Other favorites include; the hot roast beef sandwich ($11), the Mahi tacos ($14), and I'm not an Ox-tail soup type of dude, but my highly intelligent friends scream it's the bomb! So, I can scream too! Yes, I definitely recommend... THE MERMAID BAR! A fat wallet or fancy purse not required to dine here! It's nice, clean, you feel "special" and the menu is quite delicious! Go give them a try! Hey, you might luck-out and have a Daryl Hannah or "Big E" sighting... En Vouge! BIG KAHUNA TIPS: -It is located on the 2nd floor of Neiman Marcus, Ala Moana - Ewa side. -Hours are limited to 11a-3:30p daily (closed on Sunday). -No reservations accepted. -Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, American Express, Visa, MasterCard, JCB, cash, and checks accepted here. OVERALL GRADE: 4.1-STARS! (Solid!) LIVE ALOHA... YELP REVIEW #369

First time here. This is a hidden gem ! I never heard about this place before, maybe because it's so small. LOL We had the smoked salmon pizza that was delicious, hoison chicken salad, shrimp salad, and crab soup. Every dish was very good. strawberry tart to finish things off. I would definitely come back here again.

My sister and I came here for lunch amidst our Holiday shopping. We have been to Mariposa before and wanted to try out The Mermaid Bar. Selections are limited. I ordered the grilled shrimp salad w/ a side of hot tea. Service was ok. Overall, not bad.

The Mermaid Bar is a good escape from the fried food and carbo loaded heaven of Hawaii. When you don't want a plate lunch, with two scoops of rice, mac salad, and something fried, go here. Located in Needless Markup, it isn't as stuff as you might think. I've been in board shorts and slips, but I was wearing a polo shirt. The menu seems to change occasionally and the sandwiches and salads are a perfect light lunch, or snack. If you're at the mall, this is a nice alternative to the food court. If you're looking for a nice casual lunch without feeling gross after, stop by here.

I checked this place out for the oxtail soup. Being Korean.... I didn't care for it. I like the simple soup broth - da Kine that is boiled in the oxtail an soup bone for hours. This one has shoyu in it. Also the meat wasn't as tender as I have had it before.

Have tried this place twice now...both as a take out...both on Fridays, because that's when they serve Lasagna, which was great both times. There was a write up on this place recently...I think in the Sunday Dining out section...where they raved about their Lasagna...and it was good to see that they weren't over exaggerating it. The Lasagna also comes with a tossed salad, which they forgot the first time, and when I mentioned it on the second visit, the lady who greets you, made sure I got an extra helping of it...that's great service! :) The Lasagna also came with a slice of bread, which when soaked in the marinara sauce, was heaven! I highly recommend it, but it's only served on Fridays. I plan on going back there again tomorrow...it's that good. :)

Hidden like an underwater secret, the mermaid bar is one of my fave places to take my family out for lunch. I go for salads and the sandwich fare while my parents go for oxtail soup...yes i said oxtail soup! crazy that such a place would have it but my mom said it's pretty tasty. we all drink coffee float. this is a keeper!

I've been here twice and had sandwiches both times. The service was good and the atmosphere was casual. However, the sandwiches were underwhelming and dry. It's fine for a lunch date with a friend, but don't have high expectations for the food. Also, it can get busy, so be prepared to wait if you go at a peak hour.

I ate here only once but it was a while ago. I tried to eat here a few times but they were closed. The hours are a little weird because they only serve lunch. But when I did get to eat here, I had the applewood smoked salmon salad which was pretty good and tasty. I think my friend had a sandwich with soup but I think it was a special that day. Both dishes came out pretty quick and were both good. It's a pretty small place but we didn't have to wait for a table. It's a little expensive but nothing outrageous. It's a nice place to go with a few friends for a quick lunch or with your girlfriend in between shopping. I'll definitely be trying here again.

Nice little cafe tucked in the second floor of Nordstrom's. I'm not sure what makes this place "mermaid" or a bar but the lunch was good. I got the soup and sandwich combo. Soup of the day was tomato soup that was some of the best tomato soup that I've ever had. It was chunky and perfectly seasoned. The half sandwich was the chicken salad--meaty white chunks of chicken breast without any weird fillers. This was accompanied by some potato chips and a crisp cole slaw, all for about $10. I'd recommend!

Probably the last place I would think you would find me would be in a 'high-end' department store. Neiman Marcus is never on my shopping list, I work for the state, so thanks to furloughs (yes they are still around) I can barely afford Wal-Mart let alone the divine styling offered at Neiman's. So why am I here - thanks to Tim P. (again) I am able to venture out side of my comfort zone and discover new elegant eateries, 'cuz I lacks the 'classy' so Tim P. can show me the way (somewhat). The GOOD: Very simple menu for lunch, which made deciding lunch simple. Pretty much, they have sandwiches and salads, a soup and some combination of three. For lunch, Tim P. and I decided to do a school-house-switch, each of us order a sandwich and switch a half portion. For lunch we get a Turkey Panini and the Warm Roast Beef sandwich. The Turkey Panini was definitely the winner among the two, Turkey sliced thickly, caramelized onions, and apple stuffed within walnut bread and grilled on both sides via a George Foreman. Yea, apples and onions with turkey was suspicious, but in the end, I felt like I was taking a bite out of Thanksgiving (that holiday we forget often between Christmas and Halloween). The Roast beef sandwich got mixed reviews. Although Tim P. felt negative about it, I was neutral about it. The flavors were interesting, horseradish gave it a nice spicy bite and savory meat was satisfying... but was it enough? Mixed bag. The BAD: Besides the fact that I felt underdressed eating a sandwich, I was kind of disappointed with the absence of a view. Its freaking Neiman's, in Honolulu, and the view only views we got were of the Neiman Marcus roof and neighboring high rises. I understand you can't do much (or anything) about the view, and the small salad/sandwich shop is decorated within, but hey - I had to find something bad or else I wouldn't be yelping un-biasly. The sandwiches come paired potato chips, a quarter pickle and an ounce of coleslaw (WTF?). You pay 10 bucks for a sandwich and serving it with embarrassing sides like that is ridiculous. Overall: about 21 bucks for two sandwiches, which... sounds crazy in retrospect. It was a satisfying meal though, and as soon as you realize you're in a high end department store in Hawaii, 10 dollar sandwiches is, sadly, the norm. Will I come back? Most likely - the turkey sandwich was pretty damn good and walnut bread + apples + caramel onions = Nom... expensive Noms...

these guys mustve been having an off day since most of these reviews are really good. stopped into mermaid bar for lunch last week to try something different than the usual mariposa. never been here before but the menu looked good so my friend and i decided to have a go at it. we sat at our table for 12 minutes before anyone came to greet us, bring us something to drink, or take our order. and we only got our order taken because my friend walked up to the hostess to ask her for water. and its not a huge restaurant. i ordered the chicken club wrap and it came with chips and cole slaw. my friend ordered the half sandwich/soup of the day combo. the soup that day was creamy crab which she said was delicious. her meal also came with fruit and chips. we never got our water refilled and only saw our waitress when she took our order and when she brought our food. since i didnt want to wait around for another 1/2 hour to get the bill, i flagged the hostess down to ask her for the check. which took another 10 minutes to get. so of course we left cash because who knows how long it wouldve taken to run a credit card. the food here is good and fast. the service was not. but like i said, hopefully they were just having an off day.

I've eaten there 4 or 5 times total, and their food is average at best. I always end up going on Saturday because if I'm running errands near Ala Moana and want to grad a quick bite, this is a good place to avoid crowds since its rather empty most of the time. I try to avoid Makai Market at all costs on Saturday since its imsanely crowded. As for Mermaid Bar, I'm certainly not going there for food but nice quiet atmosphere. I can't remember all the salads I've had but last time I had Lemon Shrimp Salad-you get like 4 large shrimps which were pretty tasteless. I could tell they got the frozen kind and defrosted it. Lettuce was ok, fresh enough however it also had artichoke hearts which were clearly canned and tasted weird. Time before that I had their Nicoise Salad-it was just ok. I was especially irritated by cold mushy potatoes which have clearly have been cooked many hours before and were as cold as ice. It also had green beans which were obviously frozen before and still cold and mushy. Not a good combo. Honestly, at Neiman Marcus, I was expecting something better than this. Mariposa has decent although more expensive fare so why is Mermaid Bar can't follow suit? FIY, I also had a certain waiter several times(dark Middle Eastern looking guy)who clearly doesn't like his job very much. He always seem to be sullen and abrupt. He will take your order but you will not get anything else from him. Last time I was there, I breathed a sign of relief when I realized that I wasn't sitting in his section And to add, I never had any of their sandwiches because I have allergies to glutten so I can't eat regular bread so I can't speak about taste of these.
