I went to Hana for lunch. We were their first customers for the day. We were greeted by our server, but we didn't get his name. The restaurant was cool and clean. Looked a little dated in their decor. My bf and his grandma had the cold soba with tempura, and my bf order the mini spicy tuna bowl, I ordered the Mikka sushi roll. Spicy tuna with avocado inside topped with salmon and wasabi tobiko. All components were done well. The soba was well cooked, and the sauce was tasty. The tempura was fried well and the sauce was ok (would have been better with daikon). And my roll was good, fresh fish, nice flavor combination. The mini spicy tuna was served over rice with tempura flakes, I thought that was a nice touch. Our bill was $45, which I think is a good price for the amount of food we got. I left full and satisfied.

$25 sashimi platter. Chef looked not enthused at all. Cut the sashimi and handed me the platter vs somebody bringing it to my table (no biggie but odd) Didn't taste very fresh. Decided not to order anything else.

Whenever I feel like eating cheap sushi, this is where I go to -- Hana Sushi!! Although it is a conveyor belt sushi joint, it's actually pretty decent since there's an actual sushi chef making your nigiri. The highlights of the day for us were the uni nigiri, spicy ahi, garlic salmon nigiri, and shrimp tempura. Due to the cheap pricing, don't expect all their fish to be fresh. I don't mean anything being spoiled, but certain types of fish are obviously previously frozen. The only real downside that we've encountered......don't ever go when they're 60 minutes (or less) from closing. They'll start shutting down the a/c and you'll be sweating like a dog.

I actually have never sat down to eat here, although I really want to sometime in the near future. I mostly just get take out from here on my way to or from work. I like that there is plenty of parking and that the restaurant is quick to make my take out orders. The waitstaff is friendly too. I've ordered a few of their rolls, and haven't been too disappointed. They'll run you $9-$11, but the fish quality is good. I used to have a favorite place like Hana when I was in college on the mainland and I would always stop by for late night pick ups of Philadelphia rolls. It became a thing and I've been searching for a place like it since I've moved back to hawaii. I thought I'd found what I was looking for at Hana sushi, but I kept ordering the Philadelphia roll and being disappointed because it had a tinge of weird taste. I eventually figured out it was because they put ranch dressing sauce or something similar on top..... Weird, right? It wasn't even regular ranch, it tasted like "light ranch"..... Anyways, in the future, I will be ordering my Philadelphia rolls with no light ranch sauce lol. There always seems to be a good number of people dining in, so I might have to check out how it is dining in one of these days. The workers are fast and friendly, too. The bathrooms are shared by other establishments, outside the restaurant (past the liquor store) and its a little sketchy. Other than that, I'm a fan and I'll be taking out from here consistently in the future.

This place is so inconsistent. One day the roll you order is fresh, made the way it's supposed to be and the next you're eating some warm slightly off version of a roll you ordered. I've had great items (which kept me coming back) and I've had some pretty disappointing items. Needless to say I'm not really sure I'll be back

Hana Sushi is a convenient shop to eat at and it never disappoints me. It's also the kind of place that's very consistent in quality, service and cleanliness. They have the honor of displaying a green, pass inspection, placard issued by the Department of Health. If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would. But since there is another Kaiten Sushi shop that I've rated 5.0 stars, Hana Sushi deserves 4.5 stars for smaller, still fresh, toppings on their Nigiri Sushi. The Sushi Chef makes each piece of Nigiri with a small amount of rice, making it lower in carbs and calories! So, would this qualify as "Diet Sushi?" On this visit, I opted for Tsubugai and Ika Nigiri Sushi and Tempura Zaru Soba. Tempura coating was light and crisp while the Soba noodles were al dente, just how I like them. That being said, it's in the neighborhood where I live. Needless to say, it's very convenient for the Hawaii Kai residents and visitors.

Came here to have quick dinner. I wasn't expecting anything amazing because there really isn't anything worth craving for in Hawaii Kai. Anyway, the restaurant was quite empty but there were 3 parties waiting outside. The wait was maybe 5-10 min. After we were seated the restaurant filled up. The service was friendly but not fast. I was very surprised with a full restaurant, the conveyor belt was empty. Ok maybe not EMPTY but there were 4 plates on the whole belt. The food was surprisingly good for fast food sushi! The sushi rice was perfectly seasoned and warm (like sasabune)! Lots of variety on the maki rolls, we enjoyed our bubba maki. The miso soup was watered down and very bland. The chicken karaage they use dark meat so very fatty and it seems like the oil was old. Overall it's a ok, $40 for 2 may be a bit pricey.

Besides Genkie, I love this place it's my favorite on the island. It's made fresh an fast and the food is amazing. I get the crunch roll and it's the best one I have had. I wish I lived closer I would go everyday.

It was actually better quality than I had expected. The ahi sashimi was nice, firm, and free of any sinew. The kappa was fresh and flavorful. It was pretty diskettes at 2pm so I was a little skeptical. I still believe that in Hawaii Kai the best sushi is, strangely enough, is at Safeway deli. Limited as it might be in choice. It is made fresh constantly.

Walked into Hana Sushi on a Saturday around 12 noon because my boyfriend and I didnt want Costco Pizza or Pandas that were near-by. There were 2 other customers in the restaurant, so not busy at all for a weekend lunch hour. Selection on the conveyor-belt was very limited, but I assume it was because they were not busy. Boyfriend ordered the Sashimi Plate for $10- he said the fish was good, pretty fresh. And I ordered the Tempura Don for $9.50- a bit too egg-y and not enough sauce coming from a Japanese girl, but maybe this is just their style. We also ordered some rolls and nigiri from the sushi chefs who didnt seem to thrilled that we ordered items that were already on the conveyor. But made them for us anyway. I give 2 stars instead of 3 because of the lack of customer service. With so few customers, the server should be more attentive and personable. He checked on us maybe twice, but only because we were looking around for him. I also give 2 stars instead of 3 for failing to provide us with shoyu dishes, I mean, this IS a sushi place right?

In a word: okay. This place is alright. Adequate. Middle-of-the-road. Average. Boilerplate. Quotidian. Más o menos. If I could give fractional stars I would give it closer to four. We came here smack in-between lunch and dinner and were the only party in the whole place. Service was lightning-fast (no surprise). The sushi is pre-made, but a cut above most pre-made. I got the deep fried chicken bits. Again, pretty good. My brother had the salmon nigeri, which he liked. He's a sushi vet. California roll was reportedly lacking and most likely made from fake crab. He also had ahi tuna maki which he liked the best of all. My cousin had the shrimp, like the crab it was not very good. However I should note the chef was very accommodating for one member of our party who has several food allergies that make menus a gauntlet at best. Finally, the fact that you can BYOB here is awesome, especially since the (reasonably priced) liquor store is right next-door (away from the Safeway).

Today I had sushi (uni, top shell, negi toro, and hirame) and miso ramen. The sushi was fresh and very good as usual and the ramen was tasty as well. I just found out today that they make their ramen dashi from scratch. The use pork and chicken, which make a great flavor combo. You can taste the love in the dashi which I think is the best part. Besides the love, the dashi is deliciously rich and the noodles are perfectly chewy like ramen noodles should be. Hana sushi continues to be one of my favorite places for sushi and ramen in Hawaii Kai.

We've searched for good sushi on the Island and finally found it. Everything was great! It's not set up to be a "flashy or high end" sushi spot, but the quality is excellent!! Rolls, fish, soup, and the staff are all great. We will be back, many times!

  • Joseph E.

Fresh product and friendly enough service. A little on the pricey side compared to other kaiten sushi joints in the area. If you actually want the conveyor belt experience, it won't be running between lunch and dinner. You can still order by the plate though. Didn't see any ahi-don on the menu, sadly. I would come back if I was in the area but I still like a Sushi Bay and Kuru better.

We went here after searching Yelp for conveyer belt sushi. The first thing we discovered after arriving is that they don't sell alcohol -- but you can go to the liquor store next door and bring your beverage back here. I definitely did not have a problem with this, because the pricing on a large Sapporo at the liquor store is quite a bit less than what I would expect to pay at a sushi restaurant. What was a little disappointing was the amount of sushi going around on the belt. Usually at these types of places, the chefs are always putting more sushi on the belt -- but when we were here, there was about 15 feet of empty space between each plate of sushi. Even though we were there well before closing time, it seemed as if everyone here was ready to go home, and if they put more sushi out, it would only encourage us to stay.

Quality is very high for this type of sushi place. Hand made sushi, not machine made nigiri. Hand down best quality sushi for this type of establishment.

What a wonderful place! We had so much fun eating lunch here and it was so delicious. With my teenage son this is they only way we can afford to take him for sushi...which is his favorite. he was able to eat whatever and as much as he wanted without us having to take out a loan. We were in Hawaii for a week and I think this was his favorite part. The sushi was great, fresh and there was a great variety going around. The staff was so nice and attentive. Glad we went!

  • Joan S.

Worst sushi ever! Seriously. I have no idea what the other reviewers were eating - I came here based on the reviews. My order was pretty basic: hot green tea (think I got served just plain hot water), Seaweed Salad (gross), Fire Cracker maki (had pickled jalapeno vs fresh), and Salmon Skin maki. The rice used was mushy, pickled jalapeno (disgusting) oppose to fresh, the rolls fell apart, seaweed salad was slimy (not in a good way) - overall, the meal was disgusting. I was starving, so I took the pickled jalapeno and sauce off the roll and just ate that. Extremely disappointed. The only positive is, the price was Cheap (I hate using that word, but it's very appropriate in this case).

I went to this place on one of their busier nights. Had to wait 20 minutes for a to go order. Ugh. BUT I will be back because the food was good. I got the garlic salmon & it was amazing!!

I got FOOD POISONING here... Twice. I know what you're thinking, why go back a second time. Well, I thought it might have been a fluke, but trust me when I say I'll never go back again. I guess I should also mention that the service was bad. It took 30 minutes just to get water. There are so many wonderful restaurants on Oahu and in Hawaii Kai and this isn't one of them.

The quality is very poor here. I was shocked how incredibly bad and bland the sushi tasted. Just gross.

Stopped in to Hana Sushi (never visited before) on the recommendation of my closest confidant. Arrived around 4 pm and it was definitely a light crowd...actually there were two other tables occupied. I was looking forward to the conveyor belt as I like to sit and stare at my food in a lecherous manner before I go in for the kill.....that and the fact I think food on conveyors is absolutely awesome. I'm also a competitive person and bask in the small victories when you grab the last plate of something absolutely delicious that another person has been eyeballing. But I digress. Hana Sushi's belt was not up...so had to order. The service was good. We were seated immediately, offered menus and drinks. I forget the name of what I ordered, but it was a shrimp tempura roll covered in spicy ahi....and it was good. We had the salmon roll which was right on point and also ordered edemame...and I just had to try the garlic salmon. I wasn't disappointed and left well satisfied. While the food is priced slightly higher than a Genki, Kuru Kuru or Ninja, stopping by while I'm in Hawaii Kai won t necessarily break the bank. They could however work on some ambiance and play some music as do other establishments. Overall a good experience.

Gosh, should try to write reviews soon after I go but have let many slip by... I have fond memories of Hana Sushi though. It was my first time there. Very clean. We sat near the belt of sushi but didn't grab anything off of there. Ordered off the menu. I had a fabulous ten don. I would definitely go back. Lots of parking. Good service.

I really didn't know what to expect from the outside looking in, it was pretty basic and plain. However it was clean and had an attractive menu. When we walked in, I noticed their were only two chefs and one server/cashier. They have a conveyor belt, but it's not used, so the sushi is fresh and made to order. By far the "FOREVER" roll was my favorite, inside was shrimp tempura and cucumber, outside was topped with spicy ahi with masago. So tasty and fresh. We had a bunch of other great sides such as their tempura combo and miso soup.

Not going to lie their sushi is pretty good but I've been here quite a few times since they opened since I live in the HK area but the services is pretty lousy compared to how small it is and kind of pricey. Also they never seem to have a lot of variety on the conveyor belt when I go day/night time.

Tried this place for the first time with friends. Tried a salad with broccoli, carrots, and sweet potato. Absolutely ono!! Also tried the fried oysters and mochiko chicken. Oysters were good but the chicken was tiny and could have been in larger pieces with a little more flavor in the mochiko. Great ideas and presentation. Better than Genki! I would return!

Their portion are huge !! Service was great only had three people in the restaurant i never knew this restaurant was here but i order alot thinking it would be like genki with small portion ... eyes bigger then stomach problems go here its better then genki if ur on the east side!!!

Love this sushi place. New go-to sushi restaurant. It is nice and clean!! The prices are good for what you get. I love the variety of the food. The customer service is very nice they don't bother you but they also check in on you to make sure you're alright. I love their California rolls and their matti rolls!! I'm coming back again with my whole family!

  • Jamie H.

Disappointed! Portion sizes seemed smaller, limited variety of sushi on the belt (seaweed salad sushi, tamago sushi, and edemame). Sushi didn't seem fresh. However, the server was great and was prompt. Not sure if I will return. I used to eat here frequently since it is down the street from where I live.

  • Erica W.

It's like Genki Sushi (conveyer belt style) but better. Simply because the employees are nice and they don't pack people in like sardines. I prefer to order from the wait staff simply because I don't know how long the sushi has been sitting out on the belt. Unless I see the chef just put it down & no one grabs it. Plus it's convent because it's in my hood.

  • Grace L.

What...the f happened to the service? We walked in and there were only 3 small parties. The host/sushi chefs looked at us but didn't even acknowledge that we were standing there. Not even a hello, hi, or welcome. Like what? We sat down at a table and no one came to help us. Right as someone was coming to our table..we ended up leaving because there was no way you could really sit and enjoy the food in a setting like that. I mean, the food is good. The fish is fresh. But I'll get indigestion eating somewhere I feel awkward and uncomfortable. This place is now officially a miss for me.

  • Mike R.

For conveyor belt sushi this stuff is pretty good. Pretty fresh and not that expensive (at least compared to what I'm used to on average in Chicago). I'm glad to have found this after the pure crap I had at a place in Waikiki.

Great spot! Very fresh! And a lot of options especially when pregnant! :). Service was very spot on! Defiantly better than genki... Higher quality.

  • Chris T.

The service here used to be sub-standard with long wait times and cold, unresponsive staff. But in late 2014 this restaurant has largely showed a reversal of this attitude from the workers here and is now a decent place to get sushi. When it comes to the food, they get small details right. Good topping/rice ratio, crisp tempura flakes, just the right amount of sauces. Since the fish is fresh they could stand to use cooler rice so their sushi isn't so warm. Very conveniently located and worth a try.

My go-to place for sushi! Nothing fancy, just really delicious food - WAY better than Genki or Ninja sushi, though the atmosphere is comparable. The recently-upgraded menu features some mouth-watering originals like the "Sunrise" or "Garlic Lover's" maki and the wait staff is very polite and attentive, but not intrusive. I really don't get the negative reviews, as the sushi there is always made fresh while you wait (and I am a seafood snob - can't tolerate old fish or heavy preservatives). My daughter and I are regulars, and we have never had anything but a great experience. I did notice some people's reviews thought there wasn't "enough" sushi on the conveyor belt, and on non-peak hours they do keep it light, but honestly, why would you want to eat off the belt anyway, when you can get menu orders fresh-made in minutes?

  • Alex N.

We stopped by late afternoon, it was super busy. Luckily, We were seated at the booth since we brought our daughter. The booth is usually saved for 3 or more. The food was good. Most of our food was taken from the conveyor belt. I liked the garlic salmon. We also ordered Forever, the signature of the store, as recommended by the waitress. Was it only me thinking that the spicy ahi of Hana sushi was spicier than that at other sushi places? I'm Asian and I eat spicy often. I can tell that the spicy ahi at this place is better than others concerning the level of spicy. Overall the food was good and fish is fresh Service was good. Especially after we were moved from the counter with high seats to the booth thanks to the waitress. She cleaned well and fast to have us seated. Definitely coming back and try the other food since we were in rush at the first visit

I don't get food on the conveyor belt because I'm never sure how long it's been sitting up there so I order from the menu. Their rolls are pretty good. Hamachi roll is the usual.

  • Hannah E.

This is one of the few times yelp has led me astray. Walked in and noticed it was pretty empty but figured it would be at least decent. Once we were seated, my boyfriend and I noticed how little was on the belt and what was on it were the basic cheapo sushis: tamago, fake crab, and masago. We ended up ordering off the menu: unagi (was ok, seemed like they had microwaved it), garlic ahi (meh.. Just had some garlic sauce on it), spicy ahi (was the best one), and some other rolls.. All of which were forgettable. The service was slow even though there were 2 servers (2 more if you include the two guys lolly gagging as they cleaned) and only 3 parties. I left unimpressed and still hungry.

Fresh sushi!! I was very excited to try this place after reading some good reviews. I loved the tuna tataki. It was honestly not only fresh but tasted better than any I have had. The yellowtail was great and the customer service was above average. I don't think you should expect a huge conversation from a waiter because this more of a hole in the wall vs a 5 star restaurant..but I mean that in the best way. I noticed 5 different Asian families and I feel like that's a good sign. Since I'm Mexican I usually know when a Mexican place is quality bc people that look like me are around :) Hope this review helps. I definitely would go back.

When I'm shopping at the Hawaii Kai Shopping center, I've often noticed this place.............finally this past Friday, I took a chance to try this place with my friend. This restaurant is similar like a Genki, Kuru Kuru, or G sushi...........the sushi was just okay, it didn't have a large variety on the belt. When I did pick an item off the belt, the nori was not crunchy, therefore it maybe sitting on the belt for a while.........ordering what you want to eat maybe a better idea, that way at least the nori will be crunchy. Service was just average..........sometimes it would be nice if the waiter would at least fill your tea cup without asking all the time. $50+ dollars for two people.............I guess it's about the going rate...........but if I'm gonna go to a place like this, I'd rather spend my money at Genki.

I'm a big proponent of checking out all your options before purchasing. Conveyor belt sushi really hits the spot. However, yes this place usually is a bit sparse on the belt but still a good mix of nigiri and plates/bowls full of vegetables. We tend to do more ordering than pulling food art off the belt but that doesn't mean I am not captivated by the delicious morsels that roll past me. One of my friends is absolutely addicted to the garlic salmon. My chiashi (visit #1) and soba (visit #2) were both standard and good. I always anxiously wait for a plate of chinese broccoli and hoard it for myself. One more thing, the potty is outside :( We'll be back soon, it's definitely one of my Hawaii Kai staples.

Just tried this place randomly since it's right down the road of our house. We were delightfully surprised to see the selection. It's different from the usual genki or kurukuru. The service is okay but the place is clean. Would definitely go back.

This place is AWESOME. I would always go here with my boyfriend after school and work around 8-9ish. The sushi is so fresh, and I love how the employees who make the sushi look like they are from Japan. It kind of gives the area the setting like you are in Japan (plus they talk to each other in Japanese, BONUS! ^__^) There's a lot of parking and its never too pack like Genki or KuruKuru Sushi. So its like our little SUSHI GETAWAY place. Did I also mention that it's BYOB? (: We would always bring a 6-pack down, and the waiters always provide a bottle opener and extra cups for our beers. SUSHI + BEER = HEAVEN. THANK YOU HANA SUSHI, for being so AWESOME.

  • Juls H.

Service has improved a lot. The waiters were more cordial and attentive, refilling water & tea, asking if everything was ok. Before, you'd have to flag them every time you needed something. The only criticism is the wasabi is still not hot....not sure if it's not fresh, few days old?

  • Joanna Y.

Been a regular here for a year now, the new location is nice with the rotary belt but me and the bf always order straight from the menu (even at genki too, I'm about freshness!).. The sushi is always fresh, and there's always generous sized cuts of fish on our orders. I also love their hamachi maki (tuna and avocado roll topped with hamachi and a dab of sriracha sauce) and spicy tiger (shrimp tempura roll topped with spicy tuna and shrimp batter flakes)... Not only the sushi is good, normally on the side we order a zarusoba or chicken don! The prices are a little bit more than Genki, but trust me the quality of sushi is worth it. Genki is always hit or miss, sometimes I get good fresh pieces but most of the time when I go to Genki it's small, not so fresh-looking pieces (when I order, not from the belt!).. All in all, me and my bf have always had great experiences here and will continue to eat here :)

This visit was my first time at the new location, and let me tell you. HUGE upgrade! It's way nicer, roomier, clean, and a bit updated. It's pretty much like an genki. Just they have different/better selection of sushi. I was surprised to see they have Amaebi and uni! Sadly, I did not try it though. I'm not much of a conveyor-belt sushi type of gal. Just the thought of it going round and round who know who is sneezing or coughing all over the food. Or which kid is touching it and putting it back on the belt. I advise they should get some plastic tops on the plates, much more sanitary. But my parents really wanted to try their new location. My family really wanted to order one of the platters. So we got the Nigiri platter. I believe it was a 44 pc. It was a good size and amount, it came with Unagi, Ikura, Ika, etc. Also on the side my mother ordered the Snow crab nigiri. And my sister order the lobster nirigi, to me it tasted a bit weird. Like it was frozen for a long period and right when we order it they quickly took it out and defrosted it, I say this because it was still slightly frozen. The service was good, everyone was really nice. I'm not sure if I will be coming back anytime soon. I would much rather drive into town to get some sushi at a Izakaya, but if I'm desperate and don't want to travel I will end up here again

Awesome selection of sushi! The food was good. The only drawback for me was the pricing. This is what we ordered. Mini Ahi Sashimi $7.50 Red Dragon $11.50 Green Plate $1.50 Orange Plate $2.50 Blue plate $3 Gold Plate $3.50 I dont even remember which plate went to what but one was a Broccoli Salad, a Seaweed Plate, and my wife got a couple sushi ones, dont remember which ones she got. The food was good though. The Ahi tasted very FRESH. The Red Dragon was pretty good too. We had to share it. The restaurant was pretty empty but it was clean. One no-no I saw though, was one of the sushi chefs ducked down under the counter to eat! Maybe if the food prices were a little cheaper, I would go in.For $30, you would think that you'd be full, but I still felt a little hungry afterwards.

Food is good, price is reasonable, wait staff are great, sushi chefs need service training. They don't acknowledge their guest and prefer talking to each other and reading a magazine. Last time we sat down for 20 minutes and they never asked us if we wanted anything or put out any food!

I felt like I needed to write an updated review for this place. I did say that my previous review was pre-mature. Yesterday I decided to give them a second try. This time my son and I dined in instead. We got there at around 5 p.m. so it's pretty early and there was two other parties sitting at the booth so we were seated at the third one. The staff was very attentive and came by to take our orders right away. Although I did not get a chance to look at the extensive menu thoughly, I had an idea what I wanted but still undecided on my additional choice. While I was deciding, he watier waited patiently. I did not feel rushed. I finally ordered their Jumbo Ama Ebi Nigiri, Toro, Tofu, Kake Udon, Ika Geso. While we waited for our order, I grabed a plate of Edamame off the conveyor belt. My son started to eat this right away. The food came out one at a time (pretty fast actually). The tofu came out first. I ordered without the sauce and onions on top because it was for my son. He loves his tofu. He was not disappointed. Ika Geso came out next. It had a dot of shirasha on it so it gave it a bit of a kick. Toro next. Quality was decent considering it was only $5.00 for the order. Its worth ordering again. Then the Udon came out. Wow, it's a hugh bowl. The server took the initiative and gave me a smaller bowl with a fork for my son. :) nothing to write home about here. Finally, my Jumbo Ama Ebi Nigiri. It was nicely presented on a plate shaped as fan. They put wasabi tobiko on top of the Ebi and the heads were not just simply deep fried with flour. It was tempura. This is the first time I had it this way. I have to admit, it was pretty darn good. As I mention, their menu is pretty extensive so I will have to try their other item on my future visits. The outlook is good. Especially since it located in my neighborhood. If you're ever in Hawaii Kai, stop by. Especially those of you who loves to climb Koko Crater......call me after you're done. I'll meet you at Hana Sushi.

I think they have finally got their groove back? I went before when it first opened, and they were still unorganized. Word of advice, don't take the things off the conveyor belt if there's not a lot of people there!! They just keep going round and round....no thank you!! I order their toro, spicy ahi, and many of their sushi rolls! Their sushi is not the freshest of the fresh, but still very good and reasonably priced. I make sure all my hand rolls or sushi are custom ordered so the sushi chefs make them on the spot. An amazing collection of different types of sushi that will keep you coming back for more!! I love their soba here! This is the best sushi I think in Hawaii Kai, and usually lunch time is not crowded, as compared to dinner! When I drive by it at night, it's almost always crowded, which is a good thing I hope! So do yourself a favor, don't do the whole colored plate thing. Just order what you want and sit back and have fun!

The food looks good, but not if you order take out. I do realize that customers that are sitting in your establishment should receive good service, but as a customer who comes in and orders take out and waits, should be shown some curtesy. To serve customer who came in 30 minutes after you placed your order is not right.

Visited Hana Sushi's new location for the first time last Sunday, and was very happy with the sushi for the most part. The service wasn't perfect, but it was alright. They don't have a sushi robot like Genki, so it takes some time to make your order, but I didn't experience anything to crazy in terms of wait time. I do wish the servers came by to check on us a bit more...he only came to our table when we sat down to take our first order and that was it. We had to flag him down the next couple times... I had the spicy tuna, hamachi, some type of california roll with unagi on top, and the house salmon. Everything tasted great. Especially the house salmon, which was my favorite. I'll definitely be back.

The food isn't spectacular, and the service isn't the best. But if you're looking for a good sushi place to eat for a quick meal, this place is a super good spot to go. I don't usually see it that crowded, but the sushi fills me up.

  • Lindsay T.

Super convenient location in Hawaii Kai! More expensive than Genki, but much better sushi!! Also: BYOB. When it's crowded, the service can be a little slow and you may be seated at the tables far from the conveyor belt (which may be an issue if you have kids). Depending on how crowded it is, parties of two may get to sit in a booth, and may be squeezed into the bar. They also do phone orders.

My family gets take out for dinner sometimes. The quality is better than most other take out sushi I've had before. HOWEVER, my dad just showed me the credit card statement and they had apparently added their own tip! About 20%. They don't even deserve tip for just take out, on top of that.

Hana Sushi is an affordable, family friendly place to get pretty good sushi. I am a huge fan of good sushi, and I have tried sushi from a variety of restaurants. This place is pretty great for the amount that you pay. There is a cute conveyer belt bar where you could pick up whatever sushi you want. Conveyer belts are great because: 1) They are entertaining. 2) They provide instant gratification. I like entertaining things that are instantly gratifying. Especially when they don't put a huge dent in my pocket. I ate at this place twice already, and I was a happy customer both times. The second time, my friend and I decided to eat two huge rolls and the tempura udon. I think our total came out to less than $40. Less than $40 for two larger-sized rolls (one of them was called the caterpillar and looked like one, kinda cool) and a bowl of udon with tempura on the side? I call that a good deal. PROS: -cheap -fun -family-friendly -conveyor belt -creative sushi CONS: ..simply put, I have had better sushi at places with a nice ambience. those places also had more damaging prices. i would keep that in mind. OVERALL: GIVE THIS PLACE A THUMBS UP! Quick, satisfying, good sushi.

There's sooo many good things about this place... where to start?!? Well firs, my girl and I got seated right off the bat and with a friendly smile. We sat at the bar area since all the booths were taken. They were pretty busy (but not slammed) Before we sat down we could see sooo many different kinds of sushi on the conveyor belt. Ohhh sooo much better than Genki in Aina Hina!! The hostess asked if we wanted hot tea and she also brought water. There were so many different kinds of mini fancy sushi rolls. We tried almost every single one of them. But towards the end when we were getting stuffed, they stared putting out several other different kinds! Ohhh!!! I wanted to continue eating but I didn't have any more room in my tummy!! The sushi chef asked us 2x if we were ok and if we were happy with the food. We both said "Yes!" quickly!... of course my mouth was full one of the times he asked so I just nodded my head with a big grin on my face. The hostess/waitress and waiters were very helpful on trying to figure out which sushi were on the belt. The chef was fast with my sushi order when I didn't see it on the belt. Everyone there were very attentive to our needs, which I was really surprised. I wasn't expecting this level of service for a small conveyor belt sushi place like this. This place is almost as good (if not better) than Kuru Kuru in Pearl Kai. The only thing I can say is.... GO THERE BEFORE EVERYONE FIGURES OUT IT'S GOOD TOO!!!

I thought it would be rewarding for me to eat here after a fun hike around the entire rim of Koko Head crater. First off, I liked the sushi here compared to Nazi's at Kuru Kuru and the crap at Genki's. The portions are A-OK and the quality of the fish is a step better than Kuru Kuru. They didn't have a lot of variety on the conveyor belt so ordering sushi was a better idea. Although what bother me the most is the pricing. Some of the sushi I wanted to eat were $4+. It could've been reasonable but the fish tasted close to $3+ like the Hamachi. I know revolving sushi isn't the best place to eat sushi but if I wanted to spend $4+ I would've eat at some place better. The total cost of what me and my brother ate was $60, =(. Also the service was pretty weird. It was good at first then they forgot about us.

This place totally exceeded my expectations. I stopped by yesterday with my daughter. Little miss foodie (now 7 years old) was so taken by the ambience (and the conveyor belt of food) that she insisted we eat here. Given that it was a sushi place and not part of our normal budget, I insisted she pay. The kids get a ridiculous amount of allowance but this is exactly the reason why. Today, the two of us had lunch here. Oh, wow! For the most part, the food was from the conveyor belt. However, she also ordered a temaki California roll and a seafood ramen. Total bill, $24. A plate of gailan was just $1.50 and two piece ebi (shrimp) was $2.50. Ambience was EXCELLENT. The restaurant is clean and well lit. Service is prompt and attentive. The sushi itself was fabulous and the cuts of seafood on the nigiri sushi is generous. The restaurant is located in the mall past Costco and right next to Safeway so there's lots of free parking and easy access from Kalanianole Highway. Highly recommended. Absolutely will eat here again.

Hana Sushi is a nice option for folks here in Hawaii Kai. It is conveyor belt sushi, but usually, we just order off the menu or do take-out. I'm happy to be a regular at Hana, which appears to be a small, family-run business. They remember faces, your preferences, etc., which is a really nice thing. Feels welcoming here. It's a good place to bring kids, and there are a lot of things that kids (even slightly picky ones like mine!) like to eat. Regarding sushi --- I like the various maki versions, as well as the nigiri (scallop mayo! spicy ahi natto!) and the hand rolls. Most of the time, the fish is nice and fresh. I say, most of the time, because there are minor inconsistencies. Overall, though, my family and I like their food as a quick and tasty option for lunch or an occasional I'm-too-beat-to-cook quick dinner.

Location, location, location! They used to be tucked away at the back of the Hawaii Kai strip mall, and now have a dine-in location in the same strip mall, but front and center. Yay. Hawaii kai needs more little gems like this! My husband loves to pick items from their conveyor belt, whilst I prefer to order from their menu. Thankfully we get to do both here so we are in charity with each other when it's Hana Sushi for dinner! I usually get the fried spicy ahi roll (I enjoy the bit of crunch the tempura batter adds!) and it has always been great. They are also a BYOB establishment, and by a helpful coinkydink, there is a liquor store right next door (both an actual liquor store, and Safeway). Yay, more happy dances from both hubby and I. A star for location, a star for the food, a star for the byob, a star for the prompt, friendly service = very happy customers who return regularly. :D

This is a very good spot for good sushi. its like Kuru Kuru but better because they use very good quality stuff... also Garlic anything is good here.. u can order amazing rolls as well as anything from the menu and take off the belt. Another plus is also watching them roll it right then and there and not just throwing it into some machine that rolls and cuts it.... its so good

Great service! Child friendly. Yummy udon and sushi. Had another good experience at Hana Sushi in Hawaii Kai. I wanted ramen, but my son wanted sushi... so he won the vote with sushi. I was thrilled to see the udon on the menu. It was a good size bowl of udon, much better than Genki sushi in Aina Haina (which I made the mistake of ordering twice and the soup was cold cold cold!!!). The boy was happy with all his sushi. Even the Karaage chicken was better tasting than a couple of other sushi places we visit. Service is great. They're attentive, friendly and grateful for your visit.

Ordered to go .....shrimp tempura roll and avocado veggie roll trays - both were pretty good & liked that they were generous with their avacado - my daughters favorite part !! The staff was very friendly and we will dine in next time.

For kaiten sushi this place is awfully expensive! Yes, their sushi is better quality than genki but not really by much. Food: They have some unique items on the menu that you can't get at other kaiten sushi places (sea snail salad, raw oysters) and I really wanted the oysters but for two I think it was around $9. I liked that they had entrees you could order if you don't feel like eating sushi (zaru soba, donburi, udon). They also have tasty looking rolls but they were a bit pricy for me. Location: Where Cold Stone used to be, next to the dry cleaning store. In the Hawaii Kai strip mall. Overall: I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again.

We finally went after much debate for the past couple of weeks, should have stuck with our usual, a lot of the reviews says the fish is fresh but we didn't have anything that resembled fresh, we had the maguro, hamachi, salmon, spicy ahi, spicy hamachi, toro, negi toro, none of which had any flavor, and the sushi rice didn't have any flavor at all, very bland, the only plus for me was the Ika geso kaarage, wont be going back any time soon

I heart sushi go round and round restaurants! We stumbled upon Hana Sushi randomly and decided to check it out. We tried the toro, salmon, garlic salmon (yummm), spicy tuna (good!), spicy tuna on california roll, inari, negi toro, gyoza, fried calamari, fried fish, natto and more! The sushi tasted fresh and there was a variety of choices on the belt. It was easy enough to order things if they were not on the belt. The servers were very attentive and refilled water glasses and tea cups promptly. Overall, a nice place to go for sushi when you are in Hawaii Kai!

More like 2.5 stars. The taste was good. But the service was severely lacking. The waitress was clueless and running around like crazy. She didn't know what to do, she was clearly overwhelmed. The plus side was that they had a extensive menu and what I did try was not so bad. I tried all of the garlic items. Their spicy ahi was pretty decent, better than Genki. I think I'm going to have to pass on rotary and just go for traditional.

My Potagee friend: "You like have one sushi race?" Me: "OK! Sounds like fun. The sushi plate that loses pays for dinner. Which sushi do you want?" My Potagee friend: "I like the Spicy Ahi on the yellow plate." Me: "OK! Good choice! I'll take the Ika on the yellow plate in front of your Spicy Ahi plate." My Potagee friend: "Shoot! Yua on bruddha! May the fasta sushi plate win." There are some good things and some not so good things about this place. What I really like is that they have udon, ramen, soba and donburi in addition to the conveyor belt, nigiri sushi. Having sushi with one of the aforementioned for lunch or dinner is a real plus to me. My Potagee friend: Bruddah! "They wen around once and I catching up!" Service was OK, but we noticed that they pay a little more attention to regulars and loud people. Us quiet guys were sucking wind waiting for our server to come to us. "HEY!" My Potagee friend: "Bruddah! Heck! They wen around three times and you still ahead. Bruddha! Youra sushi is in good shape!" What I also like are the different varieties of sushi offered in this restaurant. Sea snail (excellent); spicy salmon (excellent); spicy ahi natto (excellent)!!! We didn't get a chance to try all of the one's they don't have at Genki; but the one's we had were ....excellent!!! My Potagee friend: "Bruddah! Four times around and you still ahead. Bruddha! Youra sushi is fast!" The quality of the ingredients for their nigiri are good for this sushi place but the big problem we think is that we saw some of the sushi just kept going round and around and shrinking on the conveyor belt. I made the mistake of ordering a tako because I wanted a fresh one and the sushi chef pulled one off of the conveyor belt, went back to his sushi making station, waited a few seconds and brought the wilted, damn thing to me. And my friend's spicy ahi was turning into dried spicy ahi as it was going round and around. My Potagee friend: "Bruddah! Sixth time around and I'm feeling good. Youra Ika sushi is doomed!" I think this conveyor belt system works if there are many people in the restaurant and sitting along the conveyor belt line. In our case, not enough people in the restaurant and hardly anyone on the conveyor belt line. My Potagee friend: "Bruddah! Eighth time around and I know youra Ika getting tiyad. I'm feeling good! Youra sushi is going be second! Yeah!" I think the nigiri sushi is of good quality but is better made to order. I recommendation turning that conveyor belt into a dessert line or at least have something that doesn't grow old, change color and shrink right in front of your eyes. Me: "How's it Bruddah! I can't eat any more. This is the last lap for our sushi. You are catching up! Go Ika go! Go Ika go! My Ika is ahead by a plate. I'm thinking... just like when we started!" My Potagee friend: "I'm full too! Go Spicy Ahi go! Move youra slow, dried ass! Come on! Youa moving like one jellyfish. Oh no! Ika by a plate! Oh sh?t!!! Ika win faya and squaya! Congrads brah! (Handshake!) Check please!" Me: "I'll get the tip!"

Korean owned kaiten sushi place. Everything is so good that I can never go back to Genki after eating here. Huge brownie points--they have kimchee!!! (which i wish every sushi joint had). My only complaint would be that the restaurant is kinda small, so if they're busy, you have to wait outside.

If you enjoy sub-par service with a bad attitude and unnecessarily waiting in lines, please try this place! When we walked in, there were 2 other parties there, but all the tables were dirty . I stood at the door way for minutes waiting for one of the two wait staff to speak at me. The girl acting as cashier looked at me, but didn't acknowledge me and the guy clearing the counters was going as slowly as possible. After 7 minutes of standing there and not being helped, I jumped in the cashier's line and asked if I can sit down. She told me I had to wait until they cleared the table. UM, HELLO- THIS GUY HAS BEEN CLEANING THE TABLE FOR 7 MINUTES!! CAN HE EXPEDITE THIS SHIT? The guy takes 2 more minutes, then tells us we can sit down. We sit down. WHAT THE FUCK, WHERE ARE MY CHOPSTICKS?! We get the chopsticks. I'm starving, this food has been just out of reach for the past 10 minutes. Take a bite, realize I need wasabi- but there are no saucers for my wasabi. I wait, assuming that now I'm sitting they will actually be attentive. And I wait. And I realize my mistake. So I get up and get the damn wasabi saucer myself. We eat our first dish and finally someone decides to bring us water; a record time of 5 minutes after being seated-- which would not be so bad, if we weren't 2/5 of population in that near-empty restaurant. Food on the belt is cold at most places, but here the food was cold like Ice T, which I found out after I grabbed the calamari and kabocha tempura. Anyway, they don't fry the spam in their spam nigiri, which is critical for me, but they microwaved it, so it was still yummy. The lobster is terrible; tastes like bonito or something. Adam P. liked the kabocha tempura because the slices were very thick. The shining gem of the meal was the spicy ahi, which actually has some heat to it! Probably my favorite spicy ahi on the island. WHICH ONLY INFURIATES ME MORE! After the terrible service, I wanted the food to be terrible so I had a reason to never come back and have to deal with the wait staff again. However, it appears I will have to come back. I hope that next time they either A) step up their game in the customer service department or B) ruin things for me so horribly that I really will never be back.

My mom and I decided to check this place out for an early dinner. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised! The prices are super reasonable and the cuts of fish were much larger than I would have expected. I ate as much hamachi, ikura and sake as I could and we didn't even come close to breaking the bank! We came during an off hour so there wasnt that much rotating on the conveyer belt thingy, so we ordered straight from the waiter, everything came out quickly and was super fresh yummy!

Service was crap. We were told to wait outside and a table would be ready shortly. Waited for 30 minutes. Another family walked in and was seated right away. Had to go in and remind them we were waiting. After we sat down starving kids started grabbing sushi off the belt but there were no chopsticks and no waters. I had to go grab chopsticks for everyone from neighboring tables. It took another 10 minutes for water to show up. They never brought any small dishes for wasabi. We all had to share one. Some sushi was dry and fish was sticking to the plate. Awful experience. Never going back. Tipped them a big fat ZERO!

I was actually referred to Hana Sushi by a friend who works there. He said that it was better than Genki and I had to try it for myself! After the rigorous hike of Koko Head, my friend and I decided to dine at Hana Sushi. It was a very good decision as my taste buds were dancing in joy after the first bite of their lava flow sushi. Lava Flow Sushi: California roll topped with a generous amount of spicy tuna. One word of caution...SPICY! My mouth was burning but I really enjoyed the flavor! It really did out-beat genki's spicy tuna! On a side note: Genki USE to be good before they made some horrible business decisions with the type of fish they serve and the quality of the food that is prepared. I.E. making spicy tuna in LARGE amounts won't get you the taste that Genki started out with AND the quality of the fish they use is not as fresh as before. *shrug* Or maybe the old workers who worked there were better at making spicy tuna than the workers today. Anyways, back to Hana Sushi. One thing that I really enjoyed was the small amount of rice that was paired with each piece of sushi! The upside to this is that I get to eat more of the different flavors offered, the downside...my bill gets higher. =P I also enjoyed looking at their extensive menu option! The have everything from nigiri two piece sushi, to specialty rolls, udon, soba, donburi, and even mochi ice cream! Others things I ordered were the Spicy Tiger roll, House Salmon nigiri, and garlic ebi. I enjoyed the flavor of the spicy tiger roll, however, I kind of wished that the shrimp tempura was more crispy while wrapped in the sushi. My first bite, I thought soggy tempura....but everything else I had made up for it. I am definitely coming back to eat here again!

Ate here for lunch today at their new location. Much bigger/nicer space, and now they're kaiten style. All I can say is WOW! It was incredibly delicious! The pieces of fish are absolutely humongous and they're actually fresh, not cold and old. Genki Sushi is garbage compared to this. They also have a larger selection of sushi than most sushi places. And service was great. My favorites were the toro (giant slices), hamachi, and ikura. I was so impressed! I'll definitely be back.

Is there such a thing as Zero stars? The service improved since my first review, but my last visit has convinced me not to return due to sanitation issues. The sushi chef rubbed his face and nose and began preparing sushi without washing his hands!!! I was having dinner with others, so I had to stay and order something. I had soup - - he ruined my appetite for sushi. I'm sorry to have to report this, but sanitation and cleanliness is VERY important to me. I think I should be working for the Department of Health in the restaurant inspection division.

Hana Sush is in the Hawaii Kai shopping center anchored by Safeway. It's in the old Cold Stone Creamery spot. In my opinion, Hana Sushi is a much better use of the space! One other family was there when we arrived, and not much was moving along the conveyor belt. As fans of conveyor-belt sushi know, plates are priced based on their color. At Hana Sushi, the cheapest plates are green and $1.50. I don't even know everything that we got on green plates. There were also yellow plates, orange, red and purple plates. We also ordered some bigger sushi items to share as well. Daughter Sophie requested the Philadelphia roll: Rice wrapped around cream cheese and cucumbers, topped with salmon. I'm not sure what else was in it as I like salmon smoked, grilled, canned and hashed. I also like lomi lomi salmon. I guess I'm a salt-cured kinda gal. She swooned upon her first bite. She left half for her dad. I went for the Fantasy roll, which was snow crab and avocado rolled in rice and topped with green, red, orange and black tobiko. I'm a tobiko fan from way back. Big roe or eggs on sushi, not so much. But the little microbeads that are tobiko? Snap, crackle pop!!! Mmmmmm. I expected the green tobiko to have the bite of wasabi, but it seemed more of a mellow green tea flavor. We saved half of those for John, too. We also had the broccoli salad: mayo, Okinawan sweet potato cubes, carrot pennies and raisins with raw broccoli. Very good. I grabbed seconds of the bok choy, steamed and cooled to room temperature in sesame oil. Love that! We also have something called the lava flow, which had spicy ahi flecked with tobiko on top. Spicy is right! The wait help were very attentive and kept our water cups full. I appreciated having the menus left on the table so we could identify what was going by and decide if we wanted to grab it or not. There were things we admired as they went by such as the tako sushi, the unagi, the toro, the ebi, the oysters. Finally, Sophie had two balls of mochi ice cream. I had a nibble of the mango, which was very bright. She enjoyed the rest of it and a vanilla one. Considering that half of what we had came home with us in two bento boxes for John, I'd say the price was right for three people.

Not bad for the neighborhood conveyor-belt sushi joint. I went in for lunch on a weekday, and it wasn't very crowded. The service was great -- friendly hostess/waitress and nice sushi chef, who played with my son and gave him a little treat just for fun. The sushi was good and the prices are moderate -- two pieces of nice spicy ahi for $2.80, natto for $2.50, and tamago, inari and ocean salad for $1.50. Total bill was about $12 for 5 plates, but we mostly ate the cheap stuff and I was merely content, not full. I ordered some items fresh and they were made quickly, but I also grabbed some things off the belt and those were fine, too. I observed the staff to be refilling the belt with freshly made items while we ate, even though there were just a few of us dining. I'll definitely be back, but maybe some Happy Hour specials or other discounts would help stimulate more business.

Hana Sushi is a fairly new restaurant so I am writing this review in understanding of that. I read some of the previous reviews and a lot of the points taken away was due to service. Well I came here for dinner last night and it looks like they hired quite a few new servers. I'd say they were all very attentive and run around a lot. On the other end, they may be reading our reviews - because they are now a bit too attentive. It doesn't look like they have waiters sectioned off...so everyone is your waiter. I kept hearing every customer asked if they want to order - they order and then in 2 minutes a different server comes up and asks if they want to order. It happened to me too. I also noticed that anytime you are even holding the menu to look at it - they come up to you to ask for your order. Heehee - but hey, I take over-attentive to not attentive anytime. They were pretty busy last night so I got a seat away from the conveyor belt. There wasn't an abundance going on the belt anyhow so I think it was okay. I will try to sit next to the belt next time though. They have a lot of the same sushi as Genki (spicy ahi, onion salmon, salmon, etc.). They are pricier than Genki but I think it's worth it - the freshness of the fish is great. What's great is that they also have a very nice selection of fancy rolls (caterpillar, alaskan, godzilla, hamachi, etc.). They also have sushi sets, fried foods, soba dishes, udon dishes, donburis (chirashi style or oyako style which comes with miso soup and tsukemono). Oh gosh, they even have ramen. I really think you should give Hana Sushi a try if you want some nicer cuts of fish. Give them a while to work through their growing pains and you will be all right.

Had dinner here tonight and I was very pleased. The workers are all very nice and attentive. My water and hot tea were never empty unlike other conveyor belt sushi places within a 10 mile radius which I will not name. I like that the service is good and that the food is tasty and fresh. It was a great dinner and the prices are comparable to other conveyor belt sushi chains. The new location makes it more convenient to visit. Check it out if you're curious. I was pleasantly surprised!

$1.50 tamago!? Already made right in front of you?! Yes please! I love sushi this way because i'm not obligated to buy/ear an entire roll. They don't have all of the items listed on the belt but the ones that are on there are pretty good. I'm glad I finally tried it. The servers are really on point - from start to finish..checked on us, refilled our drinks... I kinda just wished the lady cleared our plates and took our menus when we left... And not reached over us while we were sitting there.. awkward.

My fiance and I were hungry after hiking Mariners Ridge and we were looking for a casual spot to eat lunch. We stopped by Hana Sushi for some much needed sushi rolls. It's conveyor belt sushi, much like Genki, but a lot better. My favorite was their fresh salmon nigiri. The salmon slices are large and fresh, I nabbed myself two plates. I also got the standard green salad with miso dressing and a couple of spicy ahi rolls; both of these were delicious dishes. You can watch the chefs make the rolls, so you know everything on the belt is fresh. For a sushi restaurant in a strip mall, I was impressed. It's clean and the service is good, not to mention the the food is very good. For the price and convenience I am definitely a fan.

Stopped by Hana Sushi on the way to a friends house because my Momma always taught me that you just don't show up empty handed! Hana Sushi looked like the best and quickest option so my BF and I headed in for a sushi platter and a few spicy tuna rolls. I ordered the smallest sushi platter for $18.50 and three spicy tuna rolls. It was a little bit of a wait but at least you knew that it was fresh because they had to make everything. The sushi was decent but nothing to rave about. Your ordinary, everyday budget sushi from the local strip mall. It's an okay place for a quick bite or a drive by but definitely not a gourmet sushi experience. Girl at the counter was nice and if I ever need sushi to take to a friends house I'll probably head there again purely out of convenience.

i've been a regular at their old location for years. I've always loved the value of their sushi. good sushi, good prices. Couldn't wait to have them move to the larger location with the conveyor belt. I was hoping they'd be the KuruKuru of the east side... I think...I hope...we just need to give them time to figure things out...probably a big mistake, we went on their soft opening night 9/12 (Sunday). no ginger, no chopsticks, no wasabi...the belt was sparse, and they had like 10 edamame on one of the conveyor belt plates? really tacky. sushi quality was OK...I've always ordered the ama ebi when I've gone there, but this time it was bleh. soba took forever...and when we finally got it, the noodles were overcooked. On a table next to us, they waited forever for some mochi ice cream they ordered, and when they finally got that, it was melted. we tried again 1 week later 9/19 (Sunday). We wanted a table because we had a baby carrier. I guess there was some miscommunication because the guy thought we were waiting for a booth even though the side table had a booth-like chair...anyway...while we waiting, it seems he forgot who we even were and moved on to the next sign-up list. We ended up waiting more than 1 hour for a table. The waitress remembered us from the week before and told us "we're better now..." and she was trying. We ordered some tempura, but were warned that it's not like how Mr.Yoon makes it. We ordered a smaller portion just to try and it's not like how it used to be at the other location...super battered! the way they used to make it was nice and flaky. Waitress said when they slow down, it should go back to the old way because the owner will either be doing it or teaching the new guys. Softshell crab was sold out :( $6.80 for hamachi kama...good deal...but, before we even ordered it, we were told it would take at least 20 minutes...fine, no problem...in the middle of our dinner we were told that the oven wasn't working. ...other tacky things they are putting on the conveyor belt...a plate full of tomatoes...a blob of salad...would recommend they put the edamame & salad in a bowl, and am i missing something with the tomatoes? I'm going to keep on going because I live in the area and there aren't too many choices as far as japanese food is concerned...(although a little better since gkotaku and genki came to the east side). can't wait til kurukuru opens in kahala mall though. pacific.bizjournals.com/…

This was great! I've never been to a place that had a conveyer belt and while the initial pickings were slim as more people strolled in the selections were more creative and quite delicious! Miso soup was perfect and a liquor store nicely placed next door as this joint is BYOB. I'd say go to this place you'll dig it!

Went to Hana Sushi, in Hawaii Kai tonight for the first time. Many people I know think it is good. The sushi and fish were very delicious and fresh. The service left much to be desired. When we entered they asked how many, replied: 2 and may we please sit in a booth near the conveyer? no the booth is reserved for 3 or more please sit and points to 2 chairs where we will squeeze inbetween other parties at the counter (even though all the booths were open?) What type of beer? you need to go get your own, soda only. Go to get beer next door, come back and than 2 people walk in behind me. May we have a booth, yes! right this way. If you are going to deny me and my dinner guest a booth and squeeze us at the counter then don't sit the next 2 people through the door at a booth! lots of room also at the counter wish I knew how to ask to sit in a booth like the 2 people after me?

I use to eat here once a week until one day I was walking by and had this cooler with no ice sitting outside the door with fish in it and it smelt pretty bad so I wanted to see if they would take it inside and they did and ever since then I never went back I would not want to be fed warm fish that was in a cooler that was uncovered siting outside in the sun but idk but people can eat here at there own risk cause that's guarantee not sanitary

I really like the sushi at Hana. My favorite is the spicy ahi. When I went I thought the service was fine. Of course, my husband and I tend to go to restaurants at off peak times just to avoid a wait. If you go during prime eating time, there is a bit of a wait, but that's to be expected at any restaurant. I think they are starting to settle in to the new, bigger location with the new staff. I would definitely go back.

Since they've moved to their new location in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center (with conveyor belt service), I've been here several times for lunch and dinner and have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of food. We need more inexpensive restaurants servingJapanese cuisine. I for one particular like their katsudon (off the menu). I would give Hana Sushi an edge over their other conveyor belt competitors.

Good affordable sushi. Quality of fish is great for the price. They have modern creative rolls. Good spicy ahi. It's kaiten style, but we sit at the table and order. BYOB (a plus!). Good spot for quick sushi fix after the beach or lazy afternoon...

Serious growing pains. The place just expanded to a new larger location towards the front of the shopping center and now features conveyor belt sushi! I'll start with the good. These guys do spicy tuna, scallop mayo, and any fish + sauce mixture very well. Their deep fried dishes also taste very good although their shrimp tempura is far from real tempura and more like battered shrimp. Here's the bad. The service was awful and terribly slow. I think they are way understaffed and the few workers that are serving the place are either exhausted or just really don't care about the pace of their job. I'm inclined to believe they are overworked. We, along with 3 other parties, waited for at least 30 minutes for a seat. What made it agonizing was that there were open tables inside, but they just weren't cleaned yet. When we did get seated, they forgot to give us chopsticks and shoyu dishes. Water only arrived halfway through the meal. The selection on the belt was okay. The belt wasn't getting updated with new dishes as frequently as I would have liked because the chefs were busy filling orders from other tables. There were some dishes I would have liked to order, but I wasn't sure when it would arrive so I stuck with the conveyor belt. A catch 22! If these guys can just fix their staffing issues this place can be an easy 4 stars because the pricing is reasonable and food is good.

What do you do when you've been traveling for 16 hours and have subsided solely upon Lay's STAX potato chips (SCREW YOU, AMERICAN AIRLINES!) and Chili's To Go Buffalo Chicken Poppers? You make a bee line for Hana Suhi, Honolulu's only Christmas Eve late-night sushi spot. Even when they were closing in 10 minutes, they let my stepdad and I put in a take out order for our famished family. They let us have Sapporos at the bar while we waited. I know that culturally, Hawaiians just do sushi better, but holy hell. Hawaiian rolls are not to be missed, and the bento boxes are more than ample. Spicy Tuna, Boston rolls, dragon rolls, spider rolls: all were amazing fresh, especially considering it was literally the only restaurant open on the island of Oahu. Then again, the freshness may be a result of the whole being on an island thing. Check this shit ouuuuut, yo!

I love this Korean run sushi place. I like nearly everything they serve. I do wonder sometimes why they even bother with the conveyor belt. Everything I order is fresh and attractive, much better than Genki

it's a little better than genki but not as consistent. i'd definitely order rather than taking from the rotating belt. on a positive note, the service is good and they really try to make your experience pleasant. owner operators.

Always satisfying. For the price, the quality is damn good. Frankly, I really couldn't ask or want anything else from a sushi place. Casual, cheap, easy. Done.

Been there several times. I'm happy they added some yummy veggie dishes to their menu. The broccoli salad with okinawan sweet potatoes is delicious and they have some sort of steamed greens, don't know what it is but it's always nice to have something healthy with all that fish and white rice. Many different options for rolls, my fav is the red dragon with unagi and ahi. For the price, this place is excellent.

this place now sucks, sushi is terrible, genki's is way way better, and tiny portions and way to expensive, i used to eat here all the time in the old location near pizza hut, never going here again *bletch*

This is one of those reviews I hesitate to write because I don't want the place to get more crowded, but we loooooved this place. We were there on a tuesday at 5:45pm and there was a great selection going around the belt and it wasn't the same stuff that had been circulating for hours. I watched the chefs placing new sushi on the belt constantly, and anything we didn't find we could ask for and they would bring us one and place more on the belt. Prices are SUPER reasonable and the quantity of fish is good! Freshness was outstanding, and they even got a delivery while we were there, the packing label said airmail from Japan.

wow this place was AWFUL. moved to a new location in the shopping center by safeway. took over what used to be coldstone. i realize they just opened and they haven't done this rotating sushi thing before, but COME ON. i waited over 5 mins JUST STANDING THERE at the desk. there was a lady on the phone and a guy doing god knows what. i obviously walked in and was waiting to be seated...still no one helped. me. i finally flagged down a waitress and was like "can i sit down right there? what do i do? no one has helped me." they are completely disorganized. finally sit down- i need to ask for chopsticks, water etc etc. they dont even look HAPPY! my friend and i barely have anything to eat. not really a large selection. didnt have ikura and a lot of other things. i basically ate 3 plates of this tempura roll thing. the people next to me even had to flag down someone to check out bc they had been waiting. i dont know- it was just horrible service, horrible sushi, and the quality seemed a lot better when they were just a small place next to shack HK. oh another thing- sushi was TINY. i mean MINIATURE. i was pretty excited about this place, but i dont think ill be back. sushi man is def A LOT better. one of my favorites.

mom's bday dinner, unfortunately they didn't have any free bday dessert, but the food was really fresh that we ordered from the back. the oyster fry and assorted veggie tempura (pumpkin, purple sweet potato, green bean) were the best!! since i'm not eating white rice, my parents enjoyed the sushi for me, but i did get to eat a smoked salmon and my mom ate the rice :) she enjoyed it, so that's the main thing. they even brought their own beer (byob), so our bill came out to less than $50. nice service, and reunited with an old classmate! definitely good eats
