New China Restaurant has the best (maybe only?) Chinese buffet in Hilo! The buffet is very reasonable - $9.95 per person for lunch and $11.50 per person for dinner. There are about 12-15 different dishes on the buffet line at once. The dishes are a variety of things - beef, pork, chicken, vegetable, rice, noodles - so there is something for everybody. I really enjoyed the beef broccoli, string beans, and korean chicken. What surprised me was that in the midst of all this Chinese food they served chicken nuggets! It was funny, but the nuggets were actually really good! There are also a few sauces to choose from to dip your food in (oyster, orange, sweet sour, hoisin, hot mustard). Parking or finding a seat has never been an issue for me. Most of the restaurant is made up of large glass windows so you get a nice 180 degree view of the road outside.

Best buffet in Hilo. The Korean chicken is so addicting. I can never get enough. Service is pretty attentive. I've never ordered from the menu, however. Price is really reasonable for the quality of food: $9.95 for lunch and $11.50 per person for dinner.

Stopped by for dinner with the family before Fourth of July fireworks at coconut island. The service is fast and very friendly. Cold ginger chicken is DA BOMB! Most Chinese restaurants only give you little bit ginger and toppings but this chicken was smothered!!! A definite must eat if you are ever visiting Hilo.

New China has a pretty good Chinese buffet spread. Lots of varieties to choose from, ranging from chicken, pork, beef, veggie and even shrimp. My favorite is the Ginger Chicken. The Crispy Chicken, you can sauce it with Oyster or Lemon, I prefer Oyster. I also like the crispy Won Tons. The food in general...pretty damn good. I need to say that inside is a little tight. It gets even tighter when Chinese tour groups stampede the restaurant. So with that being said, it gets crazy packed. I even experienced one of the workers turn down a local family because they had no place to sit, more so the tour groups made it like they owned the place. My wife and I found that to be a bit of a turn off. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against tour groups, but please New China Restaurant take care of your local and in-house guests first! It's because of us you will get repeat customers. Well, maybe....

We were sent to this place by the tour guide and we saw lots of tour groups in the restaurant, Korean and Chinese. The price was fair around $13 with tax and tips, and you can get over 15 kinds of Asian food. Apparently, you could not expect too much when you pay this price for a buffet, but I appreciate them taking efforts to make sure there are different kinds of food. One highlight was you get papaya after the meal which is pretty nice.

After reading some of the reviews on Yelp, I really wasn't looking forward to going for the dinner buffet. It was a Sunday evening and, if you know Hilo, there aren't many decent restaurant choices on a Sunday evening. We got there a little after 6 pm and were seated right away. The food looked fresh and I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of choices that were offered for $12.95. The average cost of a plate lunch or a Chinese restaurant three choice take out plate is around 9 dollars so I thought it was a great value. I particularly enjoyed the prawns, string beans, and sweet and sour pork. I didn't care for the won ton, which was overcooked. The restaurant was very busy so the food didn't sit very long in the warmers and was always filled promptly. Service was friendly and efficient. I'm not sure what other Yelpers were expecting, but for the price that you pay, I think it's worth it.

Not coming back here for the buffet in the near future. Save your $13+tx on the Saturday night buffet. Lots of fried stuff even prawns on this menu. Taking a light/picky eater is totally a losing situation. Everything has the same taste. One star for the nice/attentive wait help.

Mom 'n popping it in Hilo! We were visiting with Cousin Jane & her hubby, Masa. Jane asked if there was something in particular we'd like to eat. I wanted veggies and the husband was still on his quest for good saimin. The super-sweet gal taking care of us made some recommendations and we went with it. Good thing we listened to her! This was an excellent meal. She recommended a braised green bean mix for me that was perfect. There were other bits of different veggies in there that made it more interesting and along with some pork strips, there was some duck added in as well. This chef cooks with love. yelp.com/biz_photos/IfE0… Jane & my hubby ordered ordered the recommended saimin and Masa went with a regular saimin with an extra entree of roasted duck. We all shared the veggies and duck. Now this duck was really really good. Crispy skin and juicy meat. Lots of meat. They must feed the ducks better in Hawaii! Hubby loved the wor wonton min so much that we went back the next night so he could have one more before coming home. I could see why. Look at this! yelp.com/biz_photos/IfE0… This was one heck of a loaded bowl! In addition to the saimin noodles, there was the pork wontons, chasiu, shrimp, squid, nappa cabbage, water chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms, carrots and baby corn. My stomach was upset (as usual) and I asked the same gal to recommend a soup. Oh, that seafood-veggie soup made my stomach happy. All kinds of seafood and veggies and a broth that was so good, I asked for a container to take the rest back to the hotel with me. Service was excellent! Our gal was so friendly and spot on with her recommendations. Really an asset to this restaurant. Unfortunately for the regulars, we found out on our second visit she was leaving to move elsewhere in Hawaii the next day. We wish her the best! Note: My husband mostly ate loco moco & saimin on our vacation because he was on a quest for the best. The hubby has concluded that this wor wonton min and the one he had at Nori's (also in Hilo) as the best two he had on his vacation. He couldn't decide which was #1 because they're both different in presentation. Both had extra items which brought them up to a higher level. He came home content. Mission accomplished! For me, this was the best of all the mom & pops we visited during our 10 days on Oahu & the Big Island. Big thanks to Cousin Jane for bringing us here for good food & good company!

We had lunch here after my cousins graduation ceremony. It looked pretty worn down inside/outside and had tight settings. But I was pleasantly surprised by the variety. I thoroughly enjoyed everything I put on my plate. Plus it was byob so that is always good since most places charge the cost of a 6pk for one drink. The staff were nice and the prices were decent.

Reading the reviews, perhaps we were there on an off night. It wasn't good; the noodle dish my wife got was at best OK, and my duck was the worst I've ever had. Chinese restaurants 'always' have tasty duck, but... I love eating duck in Chinese restaurants. But I sure didn't love the tasteless dry boring duck New China served. My wife's order was alright, but like the more bla food Chinese fast food places serve cafeteria style. Sorry, the people were nice, but they couldn't speak Chinese (not a good sign) and we won't be back.

I went after reading al the good reviews on Yelp. Very small buffet, but the food looked great. About 5 other families were there and they seemed happy. Filled my plate up, all of the food was slightly warm. A lady kept going by to turn the food over. The service station was electric to keep the food hot, but the temp was NOT up high enough. The food was cold and old. I will not be going back. There are so may other places to go, Right now Hiro's and Sum Yeung are my favorite by KTA

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes.
