If I were to choose L&L or M&M, I would go M&M. Yeah it may sound like a generic and rip off from L&L but you don't know and won't know till ya know ya know what I mean. I've been coming here for years since my days at Aiea Intermediate and High School coming here after school or off of school while cruising Aiea Library and stuff. If you decide to dine in, they treat you like family and serve you like you are actually dining in even though it may feel or not seem like it. The menu is pretty solid. The bento and breakfast specials are winnahs. My favorite is the beef eggplant which is on the specials menu where I seldom order from often. It may take a while to cook it but it is pretty worth the wait and eat I would say. The prices are really decent. The portions and satisfaction is decent as well. They are located right next to Aiea Manapua. There is some limited parking right in front of the small businesses. The area is also right next to Roosalie Woodson dance school. It is very nice to see that they are still serving some good 'ole local kine local grindz for the and in the Aiea community.

If you're hungry, and in search of a hole in the wall diner, than don't blink when you drive through Aiea. If you're not from the area, you'll probably drive right past it if you're not paying attention. Here's a hint..... if you're going west on Moanalua Road, and you see the Aiea library.. better hit the brakes, make a left down the steep drive way, and another sharp left into their micro, micro, MICRO parking lot. ( I told you, if you blinked you'd miss it!) It's a small mom, pop, sister, and brother operation, maybe an auntie might be in the mix too. The food is tasty, and super affordable. It's not what you'd describe as massive... falling all over the sides... one plate for two people kinda serving, but for the price... if you're still hungry after one plate... I'd say buy another one, cause you'll probably have some money left over. But the thing I like most about M & M, is the catering part. Lotta times if you're tired ,or lazy, and somehow just can't seem to get the stove started, for some reason or another; then it's time for M & M. My grandson had a birthday at the beach, and we wanted to bring food, but with getting everything ready, and loaded; there wasn't gonna be enough time to make something ( well that was my excuse at the time) So with time running out, I made a last minute call. "Can I get a pan of chicken katsu, a pan of sweet and sour spare ribs, and a pan of fried noodles... PLEASE!" and can I get that in 45 minutes... there was a slight pause, and then... "Okay!".... WHEW! Got there on time and our food was hot and ready. The chicken was moist and juicy on the inside, but crispy on the outside, that was complimented well with the katsu sauce. The Spare ribs, were soft and tasty, with that sweet, gingery, soury, tang going on. Perfect over rice!! And the fried noodles... not too hard and under cooked, and not too over cooked where it's mushy. With crunchy slivers of fresh vegetables, and char siu, and just a slight hint of Oyster sauce, and shoyu. All this was very, very affordable... but for the time it saved me.... PRICELESS! The grandsons beach birthday party was a blast, with lots, and lots of good beach type foods, and I'm so glad my little contribution to it was made possible due to the friendly family at "M & M"... the tiny hole in the wall, in the Micro parking lot, at the bottom of the steep hill.

YUM, YUM, YUM and YUM! Friendly people and great food! Hearty portions at a reasonable cost. I don't live near Aiea, but still try to cater M&M, when possible. The food is super-ono and they probably have the best "party pan packages" for the $.

this small little take -out, was a staple diet for me when i lived in aiea. at least three times a week. bbq chicken to me was the best, even while living over here in calif. i still crave a bbq plate at least once a week. i should start a bbq over here???

Try 2 stars. I read these reviews and got curious. Went there for lunch and regretted it. Teri-beef? More like Teri-jerky. Mochiko chicken? It looked like they took flat rubber slippers and rolled'em in flour, tasted like it too. And the gravy on the hamburger steak. Tasted like flour and water. The Pork hash next door at aiea snacks had more flavor than all these items. Will never go back.

Two things about this place make it five stars instead of four: - the owners are awesome and take care of you like you are family friends over for dinner. - you can spend 8 bucks and get two meals worth the food. Seriously, if you don't want leftovers don't get a mix plate, it's a huge amount of food. I love the Garlic chicken, super light reading, great flavor. My mom loved the beef curry and mochiko chicken. Wouldn't necessarily et the short ribs again, flavor was good but a bit chewy. Could be an off day, or just a bad cut, but for the price this is a great spot!

A small and unassuming place near the old Aiea Library, M&M serves great tasting and very affordable local style food! This place reminds me of the kind of food I would always look forward to eating after school. I had the combo plate with Beef Stew and Chicken Katsu. Holy cow! I could have had three meals out of that one plate. The food was also really tasty as well. The owners are really nice and it's great to see that they are still around after all these years. To get a large and great tasting plate lunch for only $7 to $8 is almost unheard of these days. Definitely will be back!

The family who owns this restaurant work very hard and deserve the credit for making great food. They are great cooks and are very nice and give good service! This place is one of the best restaurants for a quick dine in for breakfast or lunch. Try their Bentos and mixed plates! I have been getting Bento #2 since I can remember, I must've ordered 1000 Bento #2s in my lifetime. It is probably the only thing I get at this place other than Bento #1 or Bento #3. But all their food is great! Make sure to get their number in your speed dial if you are ordering a quick takeout before work or for lunch and dinner. This is a great place to do catering too. Their menu list is extensive and worth trying out different things. Make sure to grab one of their takeout menus while you are there! When you have a hard working family who cares about what they are doing with their business it shows. This place feels like home! I've been coming here for years ever since I was little and this place is still one of my favorite places to go to. Will always come back!

Great hole in the wall, family run place that we stumbled upon since it was next to aiea manapua. Awesome food... Love their katsu and fried chicken! Prices are super affordable! The owners are also very friendly. Highly recommend this place!

M&Ms been here in aiea since i was in elementary school. Same nice owners. Little hole in the wall place but their BBQ cheeseburgers are my fave! Homemade burgers, cheese and bbq sauce. To die for!

Seriously, I'm a picky eater and I think the food here SMOKES Aiea Heights Drive In. Their Chicken Katsu is WAAAYYYYYY tastier and fresher, with it prepared fresh and the batter always crisp. Aiea Heights Katsu batter is always soggy and bleh. About the only thing I still go to Aiea Heights for is their fried noodles. Other than that, THIS family owned & operated hole in the wall restaurant is much much better...

This is going to be super simple. This place does BBQ (hawaiian) right. No gimmicks, no flashy menus, nothing super fancy. Of all the places I've tried during my stay, M&M is top notch. Only 2 tables are located inside and a couple outside, so seating is limited. Wifey had a mixed platter with fried chicken and Portuguese sausage with egg, I opted for spam and hamburger patty w/ gravy. Food came out quick, everything was just on point. Everything was cooked perfectly, for something simple like over easy egg and meat, thats HUGE. But yes, this place is cash only, but 9 bucks will cover ya for food and drink. A little hidden gem this place is. Customer service is to the point with no extra pleasantries. i just think the dude's a little shy. Rock on, M&M.

Call it my bucket list of food. I like to hit up every decent looking food place around where I live before it's time for me to move again. M&M satisfied that requirement when we were "fall cleaning" the house. (This is Hawaii. No one said it had to be in spring.) Located by Aiea Public Library and Aiea Manapua, good luck finding parking. Don't even chance parking behind the building. There is a security guard specifically hired to patrol that lot. I was underwhelmed, but I might not have the acute plate lunch senses everyone else here has. I ordered the garlic shrimp mini. It came with one small scoop of rice and mac salad and 5 pieces of shrimp. Luckily as a small person, that was more than enough for me. My husband instantly felt guilty about suggesting the mini when I opened the styrofoam packaging. He ordered the lemon chicken. Without the lemon sauce, the chicken tastes like the bad portions of the chicken were purposefully picked out, breaded and fried. The lemon sauce makes it palatable, but not enough to return. I can cross this off my list now and move on...

***4.5 stars*** hubby and i came to hawaii knowing that we definitely wanted to try a local hang out spot with no frills and reasonable price tags. thanks to yelp, we found this place not too far from pearl harbor, where we were spending the day visiting. this little hole-in-the-wall is located in a small shopping center in aiea, about a mile north of the pearl harbor visitors' center. upon walking in, we saw just a few booths and tables, specials on the wall, and a small counter with menus and the cashier taking orders. this is one of the places were you order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. i ordered the bbq chicken plate, which came with chicken teriyaki, a scoop of white rice, and green salad. i also ordered one egg over easy on the side, for extra protein. the chicken was quite good, very juicy and tasty. i'm not usually a bbq chicken fan, but the lady told me that it was the same as teriyaki, and right she was, since it tasted exactly like teriyaki sauce on grilled chicken. the white rice was your typical white rice, which went great with the teriyaki sauce. the green salad wasn't anything special, just some lettuce with one slice of tomato. although i will say that the single slice was very fresh, tasted like it was just sliced off a tomato that was freshly picked off a farm. and the egg? it was perfect, folded over easy with a thin layer of egg white over a perfectly cooked yolf, still 100% runny, the way i like it! best of all, this delicious meal only cost me $5.80 (not incl tax & tip)! for the amount and quality of food, this price was unreal and i would definitely return for another lunch plate. note that they take cash only. also advise parking in the small lot right in front of the restaurant, since we parked in the back of the restaurant/building and were asked to move our car.

3 stars is an insult to the nice people who run M & M BBQ. It is tough when you're surrounded by one of the best vietnamese restaurants, aiea manapua, sakura, young's, and daiichi. It may not be as big a name but it is just as good or better. You won't be disappointed with their bento #1 that includes the best fried chicken i've ever eaten. I've tried their other things that were all good but the fried chicken is so special i can't help myself but order the bento or the plate lunch. They are so friendly there it'll make you want to return again and again.

I am almost tempted to not write a review for M&M because I want to keep this Aiea gem a secret, but the food is just too amazing to keep it to myself! Typical of most Mom and Pop diners, the menu is an extensive list of home-cooked local favorites. I LOVE the grilled ahi plate. The fish is always fresh and grilled perfectly and the Mac Salad should be called Crack Salad instead. It's addictive! I also love their chicken katsu! It's so tender and they slice it up in perfect bite-size strips. One of my pet peeves is too large chicken katsu slices. You should be able to eat your plate lunch while sitting in the parking lot at Aloha Stadium with ONE hand, not two. Parking is very limited in this tiny lot, but since there is not too much seating, the cars tend to turnover pretty quickly. It is definitely a favorite tailgate catering spot, so make sure you are ready to brave the crowded lot on game days!

Love love love this place. I've been going here for years. If you are looking for one of those whole-in-the-wall food places, then this is a really good place. It's family run and the owner is really nice. She always asks to make sure if your order is correct and if everything is okay when you eat in. I love burgers and burgers now are so expensive, but their burgers are so good and cheap. Their patties are bigger than some other fast food places. I really recommend eating here if you are looking for somewhere cheap. I've taken all my friends who haven't been here before and they all love it! :) Always and forever a loyal customer!

Good food at a reasonable price...and my fave...they load the plates! Funny thing is with all the good plate lunches I really like their double cheeseburgers. ..real juicy and tastes homemade to me....try it.

Awesome shop ! This is a great local family run business. I always feel welcomed whenever I come here. You really get a nice deal when purchasing food from here because the portion sizes are huge. Food is tasty, I've tried a lot on the menu and I've never been disappointed with my choices. With cheap, delicious, and big portions of food you can't go wrong.

I had the Loco Moco and it was pretty good. Hubs didn't like his BBQ chicken... He asked if it was "shredded", the lady said yes, and he instead got cut up chicken chunks in bbq sauce. He also got very fatty portions, which he doesn't eat. Oh well. Gave it a try bc of all the great reviews. Can't beat the prices, though, very reasonable!

Great hole in the wall place located right next to Aiea public library. Ordered the fried chicken plate and it was cook to perfection. Not oily or salty. Came out nice and crispy on the outside. For $7.50 you get 3 pieces of chicken. Would definitely be back again to sample other items on the menu.

SOOOOO YUMMY! God, I can't even describe how much I love this place. Nestled near Gara's Beauty Image and Aiea Manapua, you'll find M&M BBQ. Park in the front of the store if there's parking, but I always park in the pack and get scolded by the security guard...whatever, all worth it! Everything is cheap! That's the best part. So when ordering, sample a little bit of everything. Get the fried chicken, beef curry, garlic chicken...you know what, whatever you order is going to be delish, so don't fret. The shop is owned by a nice Chinese couple (I think they're a couple?) with the woman in the front taking orders. She's a sweetie pie too. Portions are pretty great, especially for price. If you're in the area, go and get some grinds!

Hole in wall next to Aiea Manapua and library. Parking can be a little scarce so I usually just park "behind" and walk. So I've been here a bunch of times and tried their fried chicken, bento and garlic chicken. I LOVE their fried chicken, it cones out blazing hot, crispy on the outside yet juicy on the inside. Bento was good with nice size fish and spam...for the price its great. Garlic chicken is hard core not anything like mitsuken style. I thought it was OK but man I had to tap out cause the garlic got to me. My friend has also tried the hamburger and loco moco. She didn't care for either and I was not impressed either. Food: 5 stars for anything w/fried chicken! 3 for the others so far. Service: 5 -the owners are super nice. Value: 5 -cheap and good size portions Ambiance: 2 -Usually empty, 2 tables I believe. Better to take out. Overall- 5 stars cause I love that fried chicken.

M&M BBQ is a little hole in the wall on the outskirts of Aiea shopping center, serving up typical plate lunches at extremely affordable prices. I've tried a few of their lunches and it's a mixed bag, but mostly pretty decent overall. Their BBQ chicken is good, and I've heard their fried chicken is awesome. Their hamburger steak was below average, the patties were kind of flat and stale while their gravy lacked taste as well, which was surprising since they seasoned their other plates pretty well, I found. Overall I'd say the food is pretty average, a few items worth coming back for though. So not much to say about the food, their menu tastes like what you'd expect from L&L, but what really makes this place awesome is their prices. You can get a mini plate for about $5.25 and a regular will set you back only $6.75 or so (with tax). That's unheard of, now that we're in the days of $8-9 for a standard plate lunch at most places. I also love that they sell items you'd find in a convenience store. I don't smoke but they sell cigarettes, as well as a ton of random candy, sodas, forks, spoons, and more. I liked the novelty of it, just thought it was handy. Definitely worth the trip for the cash strapped and hungry.

Located down below, just off of Moanalua Road, close to the Aiea Library and right next to Aiea Manapua. It's more or less just another plate lunch place. Good Mochiko Chicken, Beef Teriyaki, BBQ Chicken. Two things make it stand out. One, it's got a pleasant family run feel. Two, if you're headed to a potluck they put together a tasty tray of meat consisting of BBQ Chicken, BBQ Pork, and Teri Beef, all cut up to facilitate sharing. I typically go to the Alley or Young's Kalbee when in the area, but this place makes an okay alternative (especially when I'm too lazy to cook for a potluck).

Get your mind out the gutter when associating brown naked candy coated caricatures with this BBQ joint. This aint "that" part of Thailand, son, but a 96701 institution that's the "B" in BLOW (THAT kind of party) ala Scarface. Coño, eh?!! Sad thing is that I've been driving past this place for years and never really considered eating there till a fellow photographer (and just found out today, Yelper) raved about their chicken. Good 'Dood Food' is: steak, the sweet nan bread and of course, a good healthy dose of deep fried battered bird. Na-ni-na-ni-NOM-NOM-NOM ala Cookie Monster. Like my friend describes, "their fried chicken a butterflied thigh, cut down the middle". Picking up at the counter ($6.80 for the plate), i saw an "extra" in the bag when on my way out the door. They had separately packaged a piece of bird with my meal. A definite good sign that these guys pack it on. 3 thighs (again butterflied but with the bone left in, I guess as a handle?), 2 scoops rice and the ubiquitous Hawaiian mac salad. As for taste, for some reason, with the color and texture of the friedness, I was thinking something along the lines of KFC's extra crispy chicken. Much to my surprise, it wasn't overly salty (like how windward's KJ's 'gawd bless their bird' can be) but mild, yet tasty in flavor. The closest I can compare M&M's clucker to is that of the famous Rainbow Drive-In chicken cutlet, cept crunchier. Can't put a finger on the exact flavor profiles but for those who haven't tried Rainbows, I'd say a semi-sweet, black peppery with a green seasoning type of yummy. Though what makes M&M's product unique from Rainbows (and most places in general) is that you can tell it's been soaking in Korean BBQ sauce before it hit the fryer. For those familiar with the area, just park at the Aiea Library lot and *bada-bing* you're there. Only thing that threw me off is the odor of the dumpster on the way to the front door. Maybe the smell of naked dancing brown candy having one of those choco vibrato (not M&M but) S&M shindigs at the...Ok, i'll shut up. 4 stars M&M BBQ in the 96701!

I love M&M BBQ!! They have really great garlic chicken & plate lunches. Also my favorite thing is that they serve CRINKLE-CUT fries!!! (it's so hard to find them these days) Everything is cooked to order and the portions are HUGMANGEOUS... prices are super-reasonable too. The space is teeny-tiny with just a couple of booths and tables but most people take their food to go anyways. Just a warning there's no A/C so it can get pretty warm in there during the afternoons.

  • Grace O.

I love the owners--they are so sweet and wonderful. I used to tutor their son and they would make me breakfast or lunches and I'd be spoiled rotten!!! They are one of the few places you can still get a plate lunch for under $7, and get a hefty portion as well. Everything I've had is fantastic from here! Their garlic chicken, katsu, mochiko chicken... This place is a no-frills-just-good food joint you should definitely visit for a bite if you're in the area!

We were looking for a late-lunch-early-dinner after swap meet on Wednesday. Food was okay, my Grill Ahi was too salty if you eat by itself. My friend's Minute Chicken was cook very well. So, to summarize: 3 stars for salty fish, 4 stars for good services, 5 stars for excellent chicken. Together, I give 4-star as the average score.

  • Samuel N.

This place has been a staple for my lunch breaks working at the library for years. It is one of the best plate lunch places I've been to in Hawaii, and luckily it's definitely cheap enough. Being on minimum wage in Hawaii, it's tough to find a place that's cheap open past 3 (Aiea Manapua is right next door, but sadly they close at 3). Since I worked at the Aiea Public Library, I loved going there during my breaks. I would definitely recommend the bento #1, but if you're looking for something really cheap, get the breakfast special. 2 slices of spam, 2 eggs, and 2 scoops of rice for less than 3 dollars, can't beat that. L&L is down the road, but the extra cost just simply isn't worth it, on top of the fact they have been getting worse and worse every year. Young's is in the area too but for plate lunches less than 7 dollars, it's substantial. You can also substitute the mac salad for a scoop of rice for free. There aren't much places where you can do that anymore. Food is delicious here, I have no complaint besides the garlic chicken. There was too much batter making it more like a mochiko chicken and it was a little too dry in your mouth. The fried chicken is one of the best fried chicken I've ever had, and I've eaten at Ezell's, Oprah's favorite fried chicken. It's crispy and got a nice blend of spices. It's not salty like KFC but it's not bland like KFC (original and crispy). This would've been a 5-star, but there are a few glaring omissions. The mac salad isn't that great, but it is better than a lot of places. L&L does have some better mac salad, but luckily you can substitute for an extra scoop of rice for free. The chicken katsu is on the thinner side too, so stick to L&L for that one. But if you want anything else, the price and taste is definitely worth it .

Haven't been here in awhile but I use come here all the time for the catering menu. It's worth the $$$ and the food is awesome. No sure if they take credit cards now. It used to be cash only. One of the reasons I stopped coming. .

  • Ron H.

Just tried the #1 Bento and it was the bomb. Fried chicken was great!! Plus it came with spam, 2 port sausage and 2 eggs all for under 6 bucks. It's a little hole on the wall but in Hawaii that's where the food is the best.

  • Chris F.

This is a typical mom and pop style plate lunch hole in the wall. No decor to speak of and not much in the way of personality of the owners. The menu is the same as every other plate lunch place which is basically protein plus heavy, starchy carbs. I have to wonder about the high marks for the food that some reviewers gave this place. Were they reviewing the right place? There are so many of these type of places that it's easy to get them mixed up. We ordered a couple of mini plates and a couple of regular size plates and the food was mediocre at best. Some folks raved about the fried chicken but ours was dry inside with too much batter on the outside and very little flavor. The macaroni salad was so bland that we wondered if they just forgot to season it. It cried out for a gravy or a sauce or something to give it some pop. The rice was hard and dry too. There are too many better options to ever consider returning to this place.
