We got the garlic bread knots, homemade chips, and meat pizza. The apps were very good. There wasn't much garlic to the knots, but they were nice, sweat, and warm. Loved that. The chips were good, but pretty salty. The pizza had some great flavor, but the crust was the kicker. I think they should just make that into bread sticks and I would be 100% satisfied with that. There were some parts that were a little overdone, but it didn't put a huge damper on things. Our server was also personable and had good suggestions for their above average beer selection. I would definitely suggest this place.

Super cool space for drinks after work. I grabbed beers and apps with a friend after work and we are going to start doing it weekly. Great beer selection, awesome vibe, friendly staff. We got sweet potato tots and hummus and drank a few beers. Owner (Albert) was great and let us try any of the drafts we wanted. Fun, unpretentious place to hang out!

So unexpected. We ordered the garlic knots and tater tots (with cucumber wasabi) as appetizers. The portions were huge. And both were fabulous. Three of us ordered pizzas and one ordered pasta Diablo. The pasta portion could feed a family and was amazing. The balsamic onions (added to a pizza) were unbelievable. And the beer selection was outstanding (and you can sample them). So, don't walk by the local-dive-bar-like exterior and try it for dinner.

Very cool place to grab drinks and possible some snacks. I do not go there regularly because it is loud and more for the night crowd. When they have trivia it ROCKS!

Fantastic for fans of salt. Every food item we got was just caked in salt. It felt like we had a damn ocean on the table. Maybe it's to encourage you to buy more beer? I don't know. I just know that I'm not a fan. I've enclosed some pictures to show you all the depths of saline hell to which we were subjected. At least they have good beer variety. Two stars.

1st time here nice and friendly area. Parking is not bad. Very cold beer and just a nice around quiet place to relax and sit back. Heard the pizza is great didn't get a chance to try it and looking forward to trying next time I am in town. Definitely a must try if you are in town don't miss this jewel.

So let me begin by saying that this place is under new management. ... and the difference between now and then, is massive. Don't get me wrong, this is still a dive bar. But it is now a very cool dive bar. The staff is friendly, they remember your name and what you like to drink, and they pass out free beer samples ... as many as you like ... so you can get the perfect beer. They keep 24 beers on tap, many more in bottles, and rotate beers every month or so. Add in live music several times a week, and you have a winner. I'm now frequently found there on any given Friday. ... and can't think why I would want to be anywhere else. They also do decent pizza and fried apps.

A friend and I stopped into Monkey Barrel last Thursday after leaving a workout class on the square to grab a beer and catch up. For being almost 7:00 on a Thursday before a holiday weekend, I was surprised at how empty it was. Although I hate to see a local favorite this empty, it was nice for us as we were able to easily grab a spot at the bar and had excellent service. It's been a while since I've been in to MB as I no longer live in the area. However, we were both pleasantly surprised at the number of unique drafts that they were serving. The bartender was friendly and very knowledgeable about all of the different beer on draft. He offered us many samples as we tried to decide from all of the options. We ended up giving in to my love for appetizers and ordered the fried mozzarella. They came with five large size triangles of cheesy fried goodness. They were well seasoned and served hot. Definitely above average for a pizza place's fried mozzarella. We didn't order any additional food but saw a few salads served that looks pretty legit. I'll definitely be ordering one next time I'm in town.

I heard that the pizza here was good. Sadly we didn't get to try it since we were on a time crunch. We ended up getting appetizers: mozzarella sticks and sweet potato tots with cucumber wasabi. Yes, the wasabi was most interesting. Both items came out super hot. The mozzarella sticks came with 5 pieces while the tots had way more. Both were fairly expensive appetizers as the bill totaled to about $10. The service was friendly. There is free parking at the deck if you can't find any around the square.

First time at Monkey Barrel with one of my best friends. She recommended MB based on the Yelp reviews and they were right! This place has such a great atmosphere with even better beer selections. The owner Albert immediately welcomed us and helped me choose the perfect beer to pair with this amazing hummus! Also, the sweet potato tots with wasabi sauce are off the chain! If you haven't been here, you need to. Live music, great beer and food, even better service. You won't be disappointed.

BEST PIZZA ever! We have had a lot of pizza around the country. This is the most phenomenal pizza we have ever had. Amazing crust. We had the MB Special with home made pesto.... Awesome!

Everything we ordered was good and had lots of flavor. Service was friendly. If you like tater tots, they have good ones. The meat in the Philly was outstanding.

Not much as far as atmosphere. But the food and friendly staff make up for it. Loved the Gorgonzola chips and their specialty pizza. We will definitely return!

Stopped in late Saturday night for last call. Place had already emptied out but the owner and staff were still game. Halfway through my pint and a few more stragglers waltzed in. One of them a local "legend" no less! Nice people all around. My only regret is not finding this place sooner as my solo summer comes to an end. I will be back though.

Been driving past this place for YEARS but never bothered to stop; glad that changed as my Fiance' and me where trying to find an OPEN (not easy to do between three and five) place to crash and eat within the Gainesville square. Of course, there are a few restaurant establishments in the Gainesville square (one Pizza place is phenomenal to itself {read in my reviews}), but we were wanting to change up the pace a bit and avoid the abundant chain offerings outside the square for a local flare; Monkey Barrel it is and with the help of fellow Yelpers reviews we parked, walked in and sat to an empty place. Seating ourselves, it wasn't long before a lone fellow entered through the kitchen doors behind the bar and asked if we wanted a drink order. We explained we where after more than just drinks and he quickly and apologetically grabbed up a few menus and proceeded to come around to our table and take our drink order. Having explained that he was the only wait staff available as well as the bartender, he took our measly order of a Sprite and Arnold Palmer and left to fill our drinks and give us a few moments to peruse the menu offerings; Monkey Barrel is essentially a local bar/nightclub/hangout and having divulged this for myself in years of driving by the place, the Yelp reviews stating the food was pretty darn good piqued my culinary interest. Having returned with our drinks in a perfectly timely manner, my Fiance' and I decided to start with the "Mild flavored" chicken tender appetizer (she doesn't like the HOT stuff) and follow up on mid dinner offerings afterward. Within a short period, our waiter arrived with our tenders and I must say they where the biggest I have seen! Not only where these things BIG they where FRESH, hot and juicy, and perfectly tempered with a hint of heat but not enough to spoil the Fiance's aversion to spicy/hot foods; paired with a delightful and robust Blue Cheese dressing, these chicken tenders simply disappeared off the plate with a finish caving for more! Honestly, I have had chicken tenders at NUMEROUS establishments, but I never would have thought that the best ones would come from a place like the Monkey Barrel; these things where PHENOMENAL and I would later learn that they cut them FRESH in house and prepared from the tenderloin of a whole chicken breast. With our appetites thoroughly whetted, we ordered a few sandwich selections from the menu (Philly Cheese Steak and a Chicken Breast) but I dare say we couldn't finish; these would be finished off later and although they weren't as fresh since we had to leave them in a cold car during a movie, they both were excellent! Monkey Barrel is in the Old part of Gainesville's downtown square; its building is part of the historic section and the interior is dark woods, old brick, with black tin ceilings. Its a bar, music, and generally hangout venue that was very clean and quiet when we where there, but I'm sure that changes during the busy hours. The Food was well above expectation and I will gladly return for more chicken tenders! Overall, Monkey Barrel surprised me with culinary offerings completely unexpected in a bar setting. I look forward to returning to sample the well rounded menu that comprise even a chicken carbonara.

This place has great food, drinks & atmosphere. The Monkey Barrel is one of Gainesville landmarks for local nightlife fun and drinks. The staff and owner are GREAT and will make you feel right at home.

Great place. They have a great selection of craft brews on tap. Although the menu is traditional bar food it is anything but. They use fresh, quality ingredients and make many of their own salad dressings. The French fries are some of the best we ever had.

A coworker and I were in town on business, staying in a nearby hotel, and we stopped by the Monkey Barrel for dinner on Wednesday, our first night in town. The place was totally dead except for the owner, his wife, the chef, the bartender, and 1 crazy guy (literally). We sat right up at the bar and chatted up the staff all night. They are so friendly. And the food is LEGIT! I ordered the sweet potato tots. They are delicious. The serving is large enough for 2-4 people though, easily. My coworker and I each had different salads with grilled chicken. They were very large with very fresh ingredients, most of which they prepare on site. The beer selection is good, and cocktails are pretty standard. I'd be a regular there if I lived in town.

Jim's Pizza Tour stopped in on Feb. 26 and reminisced a little. I haven't been here in 3 years and I've been eating here since 1986 when it was known as AAA Pizza Factory on Thompson Bridge Rd. Always good pizza and good times. Apparently there are new owners as the Facebook page with more than 2,000 likes says 'We Are CLOSED' The other FB page with 180 likes advertises new hours and such. Some stories there, I suppose. But they are open, so go on in! Oh, well, we got there and ordered a new appetizer ; warm potato chips with gorganzola cheese. Served with thousand island. Hey, it was really good. Ordered the large pizza with fresh garlic and pepperoni. Ever heard that old sports cliche'; '...lost a step'.....? Maybe these guys have. I remember the whole wheat crust being a little thicker on the outside edge of the pie. And better.....softer. They also use less cheese than before. It used to cover everything. Massive amounts. But I could be nit-picking. It was still good. And only the Monkey Barrel has honey to dip your crust in. That's always cool. Service was really good by a nice girl named Sierra. Thank you for leaning forward evey time you came to the table. Also, I feel inferior after reading one of the all-time great Yelp reviews by Ted C. back in November. If you haven't read it, scroll down and laugh your ass off.

Holy balls this place has cheap, good drinks. We went here after dinner at Recess and I admit, I wasn't expecting much. I got a blueberry vodka & sprite & my date got one of their in house beers. My drink was just strong enough to be good, but not taste like lighter fluid. The barkeep got creative with my second round and put a little blue curacao in it to color it. How cute. I didn't try the beer, but I wouldn't have been able to judge anyway because I'm not a beer drinker. I had offered to pay thinking I was going to be an expensive date. I was fully expecting to pay $7-8 for my drinks and was shocked when I saw they were only $5.25. I really fail to see how you can get better than that.

While not my favorite all-around pizza place in Gainesville, I'll occasionally get a craving for one of their wheat pizzas with some honey to dip the crust in. They're not the most consistent and it really depends on who is cooking that particular day, so it varies from mediocre to one of the best pizzas I've had in my life. Lately they've only had the buffet for lunch, which is mostly less than fresh pizza under heat lamps with no option to order something custom off of the menu, which is a real shame. They seem to be operating as mostly a bar now, aside from their peak hours. If you go, go for dinner.

Escort Quality, Hooker Pricing!! Yes that is what the sign behind the bar says. It is these little gems, that it is the reason I have an affinity for dive bars. When ever I go somewhere I don't look for the hottest club are the swankest new spot. Nope I try to find the oldest dive bar in town. I don't know if this is the oldest in Gville, but it is old and div-y. I think country mouse told me there is one older but this one is about 25 years old, yes an infant in the world of dive bars. But how can you not love a place that has a chalkboard drink menu that say's "drink menu" - "booze"! I think they serve food also but we did not eat. Great band and as with any great dive bar, colorful friendly locals, although fresh from work and still in a jacket, I got some, "who does this city slicker guy think he is" looks. Would not expect any less from a place with a sign that says Escort Quality, Hooker Pricing, but hey the drunk college girls are free!"
