Amazing!! We made our second visit here for a combined birthday & anniversary celebration. Our service was on the money! A wine was suggested for us that was really good & $26 for a bottle! Hard to beat that. Then, our server divided the cost onto our 3 separate bills. That was so thoughtful. Now, the food....the best! I had one of the evening specials...so good:-)). All of the meals served to our party of 8 were very well received. It's amazing to have such an awesome meal served in such ambience at such a reasonable price. Go for it & don't be deterred by the exterior!

This meal had some ups and downs. We were seated promptly when we arrived for our 6:30 reservation. The bread, olive oil, and tomatoes they start you off with were delicious and hit the spot. We ordered the carbonara and veal with creamy mushroom sauce for entrees. They came with a salad which was good- it had some fresh mozzarella and cured meat which was a nice surprise. Entrees both had something that needed a little work. The veal dish really needed salt but once added was delicious; the carbonara was a little dry and the sauce didn't fully come together how it should. I know because this has happened to me when I have tried to make it myself at home. I would not expect this from such a highly reviewed restaurant. Oh and it also needed salt. Waiter and hostess were nice but didn't seem that enthusiastic or passionate; the overall feel of the restaurant was a little tired.

Excellent service, Chef Urbano visited table side and our meals were delicious! Eggplant Parm was worth the wait and my husband tried a new veal dish with rosemary and sage. OUTSTANDING! Finished off our meal with Limoncello Cake.

This is one of the gazzillion, restaurants setting in obscure strip malls that I would drive by and never stop to try, if it wasn't for friends taking us there one night. The food was unbelievably good. The crime was only being able to eat there once during our stay. We labored over the menu for such a long time, it was extensive and just difficult to decide. What I can't figure out; they had a "wine special" the night we dined. It was a $40.00 Brunello. That's right, 40 bucks in a restaurant for a Brunello. Anyone that knows Italian wine would scratch their head on that one. For a table of four, your have to order one. I think it might have been a 2011. I'm not up on my never vintages, but a decent bottle of red for 40 bucks is usually a good buy. 40 bucks for a mediocre Brunello is still a steal.

A unique, pleasant experience in Sarasota! A bit pricey, you get what you pay for! Excellent service and the best lasagna we've ever had! Chef Giuseppe visited just about every table in the smallish but comfortable room, and the DropCam live video of the 16-burner stove array on the screen on the wall was a conversation piece!

Excellent food and service. Richard our waiter was excellent. Great place for a wonderful Italian meal. Party of 4 all happy with the food.

My wife having a Sicilian background we typically eat Italian once a week. We found this place as we were driving and decided to give it a try. What a great decision!!! Food was amazing! I had some gnocchi, my daughter had spaghetti (sauce was ridiculously good) and my wife had the rigatoni pesto siciliano!!!!!! Enjoyed having dinner while listening to old Italian songs! Cool thing about this cozy place is the chef is cooking out in the open and you can watch him do so! Giuseppe the owner was very nice and personable! I would recommend this place without hesitation. For three of us it was $70 with tip and all!

Great traditional Italian food. Service was good. Eggplant was excellent as were the salads. Live singing/guitar was not to my taste and was somewhat disruptive to the dinner (although others might enjoy) but would recommend the restaurant.

Love! The food and wine are both delicious and authentic! It's great that Chef Giussepe try's to make his rounds to each table. The camera that allows you to watch them cook is a nice touch too.

Don't walk, run to Oh Mama's. Great "local"place. Great food, fair prices, even better wine at favor prices. Had the clams and pasta, our friends had the lamb marsala, clean plates everywhere.

We tried this place because of the Yelp deal they offered.... $15/$30. It is a wonderful little Italian spot. Early for our reservation, we were asked to eat at the bar. The food was excellent. Joe our server was knowledgeable and helpful. Our group had the bolognese, chicken, pork and seafood linguini - everyone loved the food. Giseppe, the Owner, was friendly and a gracious host.

What a surprising location in a strip mall! The food was delicious. We had the polenta appetizer, tortellini, and spaghetti with seafood. All were wonderful. The bread with tomato slices brought to the table was yummy. Chef Giuseppe came often to talk with the diners. Gino, the guitarist, was so enjoyable. We will definitely dine there often. It is a taste of Italy. As an added bonus, we had an opportunity to speak Italian with Giuseppe and Gino, as both are from Italy originally. Bravo Chef Giuseppe!

Had the Linguini ai Gamberetti. Probably spelled it wrong, but find it and try it. Heavenly light sauce with spicing I've never experienced. Delicate after tastes brush over the palate. I couldn't hear my wife talking to me while I was eating. Was probably moaning in extacy. Sorry about all the superlatives, but this place is really special. My first time, but definitely adding to the top of my list of eateries in Sarasota. Just do it!

Amazing food, great wine. Everything is prepared in-house, from the pasta to the sauces to the dessert. Who knew this little gem was right around the corner from my house this whole time!

My family went to Oh Mamma Mia's for dinner. The service provided by Joe was excellent. All the food was great but the spicy sausage risotto was one of the best meals I have ever had! Kudos to Chef Guiseppe and staff. Can't wait until our next visit!

Excellent choice for dinner. Great amazing food and wine, cooked in front of you if you desire, by Chef Giuseppe. Vegetarian and gluten free options. Joe, the waiter, was very attentive and friendly. All went out of their way to make the evening a great success. Will definitely return and highly recommend. Great value.

WOW! From 12 - 50 we were blown away by this place. An Interactive Italian chef, Guiseppe, made the meal literally come alive. Did I mention that the food was amazing? And the interactive nature of this place makes it a 'Must Go' place in our minds. We are not big Siesta Key people but we may have to come back to Siesta just to have another meal here!

Oh Mamma Mia! WOW what a fantastic restaurant!!! The food and service was super! We were greeted and waited on by Joseph who was very friendly and extremely efficient! The service was exceptional!!! Giuseppe took the kids into the kitchen area and showed them the preparation of their dinners. How amazing is that!!! Everyone loved their meals, there was not even a bite left on anyone's plate. We will definitely return.

AWESOME MEAL. Chef came to table, was friendly and fun. Waiter was very helpful and came around just enough to be helpful but not a nuisance. Gnocchi's were phenomenal and carbona was great. Nice hidden gem in gulf gate.

Best Italian restaurant outside of Boston's North end. Great service. Loved the singing guitar player.

This is a delightful, authentic Italian restaurant. You get an appetizer of bread and marinated tomato slices. Entrees come with soup or salad but for a small fee you can substituted a small portion of pasta. We love the tender veal or chicken Milanese topped with fresh arugula and diced tomatoes. With that we opt for the small portion of pasta in a delicious pomodoro sauce. If we have a pasta entrée, such as the wonderful puttanesca, we start with the soup or salad. A unique feature of this restaurant is the use of TV-screens that allow diners to watch their dinners being prepared. Chef Giuseppe tries to personally chat with diners at every table. One caveat: the Bolognese sauce is in the classic style, mostly diced meat and carrots, not the more tomatoe-y Americanized style. This restaurant is typically fully booked in season and close to that the rest of the year. They close for about a month in the summer.

Omg! Went there yesterday after leaving another restaurant without eating because of that restaurant's poor customer service and arrived at Oh Mamma Mia and they treated us wonderfully even though they were super busy!! They brought water, complimentary prosecco and delicious bread with tomatoes and oregano. The prosciutto with mozarella was delicious, the soup delicious, the mushroom risotto was to die for and the veal milanese amazing!!! What can I say?!? I LOVE this restaurant. Excellent food and service.

I had a wonderful meal with my parents, sister and her significant other here this evening. Everyone had a fantastic entree. My veal was beautifully seasoned and tender. I tasted a bite of everyone else in my party's meal and all were equally well executed. The chef has a unique style -- maybe even a bit cocky, but he backs it up with his extreme talent and warm personality. He is consciously trying to fight the stereotype of "Grandma's Italy," as he described it. He represents a new generation of Italian immigrants and isn't afraid to show it. His menu boldly declares that his recipes represent hundred year old traditions and will not be altered to fit Italian-American stereotypes -- "no veal parmigiana, no fettuccine alfredo," it states. There's also a ballsy sign on the front door -- "We DO NOT serve pizza." Before I give you the impression that the chef is anything less than kind and professional, let me point out that he personally came over to our table TWICE during our meal to ask if we were enjoying ourselves, and to persuade us to enjoy a second (discounted!) bottle of wine. The chef also provides a live feed of his cooktop on a large projection screen, so you can see your dish come to life piece by piece. The kitchen is wide open in the middle of the restaurant. This is clearly a chef with nothing to hide and supreme confidence in his skills. I'm a seasoned world traveller and I deeply appreciate authenticity and quality when I dine out. "Oh Mamma MIa" provided an amazing quantity of both. Our family visits Siesta Key roughly once every other year, and we've all agreed that on our next visit, it would be a sin to miss a meal at this amazing quality restaurant. I grew up with a first-generation Italian-American grandmother. Everyone at our table mentioned how much my late grandma would have loved this restaurant's cuisine and style. That has to count for something. Bravo, chef. I had been sorely disappointed in my culinary experiences during several trips to Florida, other than the freshness of the seafood, until this evening. Caro Chef -- Mille grazie per una cena molto bello e delisioso , e anche per una fine buonissimo per il nostro vacazione a Florida! PS - I would just like to add that in my personal opinion, the quality of the air conditioning and the noise level really shouldn't have a full-star influence on a review! It's a restaurant you're going to be in for two hours, tops, not a hotel you're spending the night at -- and if you go to an Italian restaurant expecting quiet, you're doing it wrong! :-P

I cannot say enough amazing things about this restaurant! Attentive, very on point wait staff, delectable food, talented chef who came around to each table, small and comfortable location. We have been looking for a good Italian place, and we definitely found it here!

We had such an amazing first dinner at Oh Mamma Mia that we made a reservation for the very next night to bring our friends to this awesome restaurant. The second night was as great as the first! All 5 of us loved our dishes. I got the pumkin-filled tortellini, three people got the lobster-filled ravioli, and the fifth person got the prosciutto tortellini. The meals were all served piping hot and were all delicious. Oh, and the night before my husband got a veal dish with a light cream sauce that was out of this world. The pumkin-filled tortellini also had chutney inside and was sauteed in butter with a sprig of sage and was topped with amaretto crumbles. Simpley to die for -- and I usually hate that expression. I had it both nights. They make their own pasta and it is light and tasty not heavy and gloppy like it can be when it's not done well. Also they have two screens showing the meals being prepared and plated. The first night we ate there we saw our dishes being prepared which was really fun! The only bad thing about the restaurant is that it is very small and you will need to call a bit more in advance than usual to get a reservation. And I think it has a name that makes it sound like a cheesy pizza joint. So don't let the name or the fact that it is in a little strip mall deter you. This is a 5-star restaurant with a big future. I am just sad that when I come back to Sarasota next year it will be even tougher to get a table!!!!

Great little restaurant in Gulf Gate area, and I emphasize "little" so if you want a great Italian dinner (no pizza) make a reservation. My husband and I didn't have a reservation but luckily there was one available take, no wait. Mind you this is May and most "snowbirds" have left our area but it's a popular place nonetheless. Menu is unique with all pasta being whole wheat we were told. Chicken, veal, fish and several pasta dishes, so plenty from which to choose. Soon after we were seated we were given a basket of toasted, warm bread with a dish of marinated tomato slices and they gladly brought us more. Most meals come with a nice little salad. I loved my chicken with olives and capers. Incredibly tender and tasty. The dinners come with a side of veggies and we enjoyed lightly sauteed carrots, green beans and tiny onions. Service was excellent. Staff efficient and our water glasses were kept full. The a/c isn't very efficient though so dress accordingly. The dinner was worth it. We will return.

This was my third visit to this small, cozy Italian restaurant and the first time I was disappointed. I think the quality of the food has slipped and the prices have gone up dramatically. I'm willing to pay a little more if the quality is great, but this was not the case. Everything lacked flavor. I added a lot of salt, something I almost never do but this food needed help. I ordered lamb chops that were mediocre at best. Others ordered pasta, again lacking. I will not be going back soon.

Very authentic Italian, the ravioli di carne was some of the best ravioli I've had and my italian family eats a lot of ravioli. The wine was good and prices were reasonable. Lots of locals go here so remember to make a reservation.

This is a "gourmet - wanna - be" restaurant that almost makes it. First, the food is excellent - I have had their veal, pasta and fish and it's all excellent. Their food is representative of several areas in Italy and the place is run by a very talented chef. They charge fair prices and are very friendly. Why not five stars? The seating is VERY tight; the air conditioning is barely making it because the small kitchen is in the seating area in this very small restaurant and the noise level is too high to rate it 5 stars. Better have reservations for this place it's so small, they just have room for two seatings.

Oh Mamma Mia is quite possibly my favorite restaurant in Sarasota! The food is always very fresh and flavorful, the staff is very attentive, and Chef Giueseppe is very engaging with his patrons. The restaurant's kitchen is set up in the dining room with a countertop at which you can sit and enjoy your meal. This is my favorite place to sit, because your dining experience becomes more interactive. Also, they have a couple cameras focused on the stove/grill so the entire restaurant can see the preparation of meals projected on a couple screens. During "Season", I highly recommend reservations. Don't be fooled by the outside appearance as this restaurant is in a strip of stores in the Gulf Gate area and looks rather nondescript. The food and atmosphere is anything but nondescript!

My husband and I went there for the first time last weekend. We found their food to be excellent and the service very friendly and acomidating. The Chef was busy because the place was packed but still made time to ask how everything was. They have cameras and a big mirror so you can see everything that's going on behind the scenes. It was pretty entertaining. You can actually watch your food being prepared. My husband had the Veal Chop And I had a veal dish with a gorgonzola sauce. Both were excellent! We're only in Sarasota about 2 weekends a month, but we will be back every chance we get!

Great owner with a lot of promise. Our server appeared new and had several missteps. Food was good overall. Chicken marsala is very good. The limoncello dessert cake is excellent. I would definitely go back to try other dishes even though I expected more flavor with the saltimbocca Romana, The sauce was bland but the prosciutto gave it a great flavor. Accompanying veggies were good although I never saw the polenta that is also included with the dish. Definitely check this place out as it's not your run of the mill Italian restaurant. Worth a visit to try several of the creative and unique dishes.

Outstanding food made even better by theatrical presentation and great service! We went with the recommended Nero d'Avola wine, we all got the amazing fresh and artistic house salads, then I got talked into ordering veal though some of the pasta looked awfully good, so Vitello al Gorgonzola it was. Now I like Gorgonzola but it was used sparingly so it did not overpower the veal or the spinach. It came with perfectly sautéed green beans, only ones I've had that were better than my sister's, deeply caramelized pearl onions-divine! And a little heart shaped piece of polenta After cleaning my plate I did not really have room for tiramisu, but we got it anyway. I think my dad and his gf helped with that more than they intended! The staff treated us like respected family, and it's true my dad is a regular, but I saw other tables were being equally well attended. The mirror and video screens are a treat , too, I really enjoyed watching Giuseppe and his staff at work. i249.photobucket.com/alb…

It's always a pleasure to dine here. What it lacks in atmosphere it certainly makes up for with the food. While it isn't Italy, it's as close as we've found locally. The staff has always been great. Pleasant and on top of their game. Attentive without being intrusive. That's a fine line and they walk it well. If you're in the mood for authentic Italian (as authentic as you're going to find outside Italy) then by all means give Oh Mama Mia a try. P.S. - Make reservations or risk being turned away. Even now that they took on the space next door, it's still likely you'll wait or be turned away without reservations.

Oh Mamma Mia's is the place for authentic Italian when visiting the Sarasota area. Homemade fettuccine in the Fettucine Emiliana was cooked to perfection. Penne with Vodka Sauce was the best we've tasted in a long time. Giuseppe and his staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. A truly enjoyable dining experience!!

I can not say enough good things about this restaurant. The food was amazing and the service was unbeatable. Our waiter Joe was incredibly attentive and great with my elderly grandparents. The chef Giuseppe came to our table to make sure we were enjoying our food which was to die for. Each of us in a party of 6 ordered something different and were extremely happy with our meals. The complimentary bread was delicious. The wine was great too! They even had a projector streaming a live video of the chef at work preparing your meal! There was also a man named Geno that came around playing the guitar which was a wonderful touch and made us feel right at home and welcome. The atmosphere and staff kept us smiling the entire time! Overall it was a wonderful experience and I'm extremely sad I won't be able to come back until next year's vacation!

Excellent service from the moment we walked in. The seafood linguine (shrimp and scallops) was full of flavor and the limone dishes (chicken and veal) were to-the-last-bite-no-leftovers delish. Save room for dessert, especially the limoncello cake. They open only for cooking lessons on Mondays. The chef regularly comes out to visit with guests and the musician is very friendly and knows all cultures worth of music. Very relaxing pace of meal.... Loved it!

More than just a neighborhood Italian place. Delicious food. Well served. Live music. ( hogfish is now called unicorn fish and it's delicious).

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
