    It smelled old and musty. The sushi was terrible, we ordered a philly,yellowfin,tempora, and spider roll. Could not eat with chopsticks as the rolls fell apart. Tempura roll was missing tempura. Fish was not fresh tasting. Avoid this place!

    Mediocre at best. I think grocery store sushi is far better than the sushi here. They rolls fell apart and didn't have any flavor. I definitely wouldn't go back.

    Awesome all around. Great egg rolls and THE BEST Cashew Chicken I've ever had! Very amazing sushi as well. My fiancée loves the chicken teriyaki with sautéed veggies.

    I was really looking forward to dining at Yamato but I have to say that I was very disappointed in my recent experience. In general the restaurant doesn't seem very clean; the floors and the silverware. The hibachi chef was cute and seemed to be just learning so I know he did his best... the vegetables were cooked perfectly. But our steak and salmon were just "ok". It wasn't a "bad" experience just didn't live up to the expectations that I had. I probably won't go back, unfortunately:(

    This is the best sushi not only in Pensacola but some of the best ever! Sushi chef and all the staff are awesome. Worth the drive if you're not on the west side. All Japanese owned and operated. I LOVE Yamato's and check out the Pinnacle roll!

    Was very disappointed with the hibachi and sushi here. The sushi was gross, and even though I specifically asked for no wasabi there was wasabi in every roll I ordered. The hibachi chef put on a good show but my scallops were over cooked, the shrimp tasted like it had gone bad...last week. The chef did not even ask how I wanted my steak cooked and gave it to me well done when I like rare. The fried rice was okay until my third bite was equivalent to a mouthful of black pepper. The only enjoyable food was the veggies and the ice cream, which is pathetic for a hibachi grill. I would never recommend this restaurant, save your money people.

    The people here are great: the sushi chef and associate sushi chef, the ladies who greet and the servers. All nice, helpful, etc.! Decor: lovely! Manages to have a wide variety of seating locations including places for groups and romantic nooks. Food: Excellent chicken teriyaki, very good tonkatsu (but just a little dry), excellent beef yakisoba, tasty sushi, and they totally passed my sneaky "ikura" test (i.e., their ikura - salmon roe - was tender, tasty, and not too highly salted). Two remarks from the guys: 1) "soup" was not miso, but was a kind of egg drop soup with a chicken base. One of the guys eats no chicken, so he was perturbed by this. 2) Please switch to a better brand of gari, the ginger has a very strong chemical taste and extremely violent deep-pink color that is downright alarming.

    I had some gyoza & tempura. The gyoza was delicous but the tempura was lacking. I was a little condused by the chicken tempura --- what?! & also the onions.... hmmmm not something I'm used to but whatever. I guess I shouldn't compare it with stuff I am used to eating in Hawaii but too bad, I am. I've had better. My boyfriend's tonkatsudon was delicious tho & if I were writing a review after eating his dish, I might've given another star. Perhaps another visit is in order. This place does have a Hibachi section that looked bumpin' the night we were there tho... may have to give that a try. The servie was slow, but I won't complain about that because the lady was working her butt off & she was doing her best to help everyone out. She was still very kind. Ahhhh, I almost forgot to add... they have green tea ice cream. YUM.

    THIS PLACE IS IN BAD NEED OF A RENOVATION. The first impression I got upon entering this restaurant was "This place does not look clean". Portions were very small, but prices were high. Also, the waitresses seemed to be very rude.

    I've ate at this place a few times before, and it's always been decent. Despite the authenticity of the place, I've had issues with the sometimes skimpy portions and the lack of good service. Today the service was great, but I decided to try something different. I got the Unadon, which is an eel dish, and I was sorely disappointed. There are, of course, different ways of preparing it, and I've had it other ways, which I've liked. This is a moderately priced ( though more expensive than what I usually go for! ) dish at $15.90 or so, and when it came out, it was five small pieces of eel on plain, steamed rice. There was the salad, soup and veg that came with, yes, but that comes with almost every dinner on their menu. Now bear with me: All the restaurants, whether they're authentic or not, get their unagi ( eel ) from the same supplier, and it's ALL the same. It's also precooked, though the nice places will grill it so it's a bit crispy. Now, you can also buy this eel at almost all of the Asian Grocers. TK's ( On Palafox ) an Bogo's ( on Pace Blvd ) both sell fillets of around 14-16oz of eel for around $6-$7, and they're of course making a profit there too, so they're probably buying it for $4-5 a fillet or less. With that said, I couldn't understand the skimpy portions of the eel. I certainly didn't expect a full fillet, but a third of a fillet rather than an 1/8th would've been nice. The rice wasn't even seasoned, like it should be. Usually unadon rice is seasoned with rice vinegar, but it was just plain, bland steamed rice. That said, my Agedashi Tofu was delicious. The tsunemono was very bland, it could've used a lot more rice vinegar, noticing a trend? Soup was good, but I find miso is a soup hard to mess up. Veg was good. My mother ordered an eggroll, she's not exactly the most traditional for her Japanese cuisine, and she didn't like it at all, and it honestly wasn't that good. Her steak teriyaki was fantastic she said, and the portions on that were quite generous. Probably a 12oz steak for $18 plus fried rice, tempura veg, soup, and tsunemono. Not a hugely disappointing dinner, just, the unadon is pathetic. Especially when high quality beef like the kind they get surely costs more than eel. :/

    My husband LOVES this place. He's from Hawaii and Asian descent so he's a bit pickier when it comes to his sushi and Japanese. I get asked to come here every weekend, if he could he'd eat there daily. Everyone in there is so sweet, I believe its the owner I see all the time walking around and she is a delight to talk to. We've had them do special orders of a dish we use to get back on the island and they were more then happy to accommodate us. I wouldn't be surprised if we go there tonight :)

    One of the more authentic sushi restaurants I have tried. I prefer the restaurants with old-fashioned Japanese decor as I love dining in the tatami rooms provided. There's an outdoor rock garden that the tatami room overlooks with sparse foliage and a bridge, very serene. Ladies, if you would like to dine in the tatami rooms, I'd suggest you wear pants. I purposely avoided getting up for bathroom breaks just so I could minimize any chance of pulling a Britney Spears with my skirt.

    Yamato has been around for over 30 years and there is a reason their business has thrived after all this time; they make good Japanese food. It's as simple as that. The restaurant is cute with the little koi pond as you enter and the tatami rooms are nice. Everyone enjoys the hibachi and the sushi is very good. Some of the older women waitresses can be grumpy and I would normally deduct a star for that but since this is the most authentic of the Japanese restaurants in Pensacola, I'm going to give it a solid 5.
