Visited the Coffee Cup this morning, just as a magnificent storm hit downtown Pensacola. It's been a couple of years since my last visit, so I'll give the benefit of a doubt and be generous with 3 stars. I had biscuits and sausage gravy, or to be precise, biscuits and "sausage" gravy. The gravy was tasteless and the sausage was hiding, if there was any sausage in it at all. The biscuits were undercooked, but I suppose that I could have asked for a well-done example, had I known that the standard variety is barely cooked in the center. The corned beef hash has some strange flavor...garlic, maybe? Perhaps I'm just used to the canned kind that I pick up from the grocery and prepare at home, but I prefer to think that I'm a hash purist...corned beef, spuds, salt, and pepper. Don't try to get all fancy with a breakfast staple. The grits were the best grits that I've ever had: thick, creamy, and full of flavor. Those were not instant grits, but the type that take some time to get done and serve. My server was nice enough, but she repeatedly touched and grabbed the top rim of my water glass. I can clearly see her clearing dirty dishes from tables, touching all sorts of used items soiled with who knows what, and she insists on touching my glass where I'm putting my lips? I'd think that basic serving etiquette would define that as a no-no. It's been a long time since I've witnessed such a thing in an eatery. I'd go back and try something different, but would never recommend the "sausage gravy" or the corned beef hash.

Wonderful breakfast. I do not miss when I am in pensacola. Recommend sitting at counter and talking to the locals.

This place is where the locals go for a super breakfast, lunch is great too. Not much has changed about this place since it opened in 1945. Doesn't take long before the crew knows you by name. The burgers are the best around.

This place isn't all that ! Look at all the pictures? Pancakes look okay but everything else is standard stuff... I had the corn beef hash, it was wretched. Just horrible.. Folks do not go here just because it's a cool historic joint .. Treat yourself to FOOD... Unless you like that bit of history crap. If your looking for that and way better food go to Oscars.. If they served Denny's or Waffle House people would say wow this place is good and it has that sorta 60s diner nostalgia . But no folks it's just 60s that's it... Unless you cook subpar breakfast than you'll probably enjoy the feel and the food.. But people here in pcola always strive for dives rather than franchise good food ....

Been going here for years. This was the first time we were disappointed. Coffee was weak and the normally excellent grits were juicy and watered down. Service was also lacking. I asked the waitress about the weak coffee and her reply was,"I didn't make it". I don't care who made it, it was still weak. She didn't offer a fresh cup, just poured weak coffee on top of weak coffee. Later we asked for a tea refill which never came. There's too many good places to have breakfast in town for us to be disappointed again.

Well that was the most fluffy omelette I think I've ever had! LOL my kind of place. It's been here since 1945, so it's not one of those fly-by-night breakfast restaurants :-)

The atmosphere was great. The ladies were so sweet. The grits and biscuit were delicious. I got simple a breakfast, so next time I'll try something more unique. Great place for a cheap breakfast with a home-like feel. I'll be stopping by again before I leave.

If you want a true "Diner" experience, this is your place. We met a long time customer and friend for breakfast this morning. And so glad we did. Everything from the coffee to the service and food was exceptional. These guys opened their doors in 1945. (I think .... ) Anywho, they have been in Pensacola for a very long time. That, in itself, should make you go there. Is this a "fancy" place? No, and that's just fine. The food and service were right on time. Give it a try. However, if you are a food "snob" or the pretentious type, this place is it for you. Good Food. Good People. Good Service. What more does a person need?

Server was rude, cornbread bottom was burnt, Cole slaw out of a can- disgusting. I grabbed my own to go boxes because our server never came back. When I went to pay she asked how it was - I told her it was just okay, she didn't say anything. Don't waste your money.

It has been many years since I had been to 'The Cup'. There hadn't been any reason for my lack of patronage, just it was out of the way. My spouse mentioned it as a possible stopping point for our Saturday morning breakfasts, so we stopped in today. The restaurant is right on the street, but there is a good sized parking lot right behind it. The staff is awesome and friendly. They also made sure the coffee was hot and full. I liked how any server with a pot of coffee would stop and ask if we'd like a refill. Arriving at 8am got us a seat, although barely. When we left around 9, there were a few people waiting for a table. The interior is about what you'd expect from a 1960s-style diner. The food was hot and good for the value. I'd certainly go back again. If you're looking for a classy breakfast place, this is not it. But if you want a blue jean, rolled-up sleeves kind of place, then the Coffee Cup might do you just right.

My wife and I love this place. We love how it's down to earth and not polished as in other restaurants. The food is great and they serve piping hot coffee. The waitresses are prompt and friendly. Best of all they keep the coffee topped off!!

Loved this place. It's pretty bare bones, typical diner, but there was a lot of love in that meal and at a reasonable price. I got a pecan waffle. I think the menu says it is topped with pecans, but the pecans were actually cooked into the waffle and it was perfect. I was surprised it came with bacon, which was also very good and it was for under 5 bucks. In my home town, would have cost at least 8. My wife got the Nassau grits which I cannot recommend enough. Grits with bacon, ham, green pepper, tomatoes and tobasco. Being from above the Mason Dixon line, I don't come across plain grits very often and these were to die for.

DOG VOMIT! I wish I had read the unrecomended reviews before I sat down....especially the one about the cockroaches running out from under the picture on the wall....I believe I was sitting at that same table in the corner by the kitchen. I was looking for a quick breakfast on my way to the airport. A greasy spoon is usually a great place for that. I ordered a 1 egg breakfast and the waitress recommended the corned beef hash as my meat option. I wish I had taken a picture before I sent it back because it looked like dog food that has been vommitted back up! The hashbrowns were dry as hell. They only edible things were the grits and the egg....I'm pretty sure I will get sick. I should have just left. They claim to cook in the front at the exhibition style kitchen, but my food came from the real kitchen in the back. The door swung open and I swear it looks like an old insane asylum kitchen with bright dirty yellow scary walls. I am also pretty sure at least 3 of the waitresses are related....they eerily look alike and have the same poochy stomach. I cannot warn you enough to stay away!

Great place for breakfast! They have daily lunch specials that are just as yummy as the breakfast. Food comes out super quick and the staff is very friendly even though it is sometimes super busy. I only wish that they were open all day!

  • Jessica K.

It may be a little but of nostalgia - but I love the coffee cup. It's the best little breakfast diner I've been to. It's fun to watch the cool make all of the food at the open grill. The bacon is always cooked perfectly for me and I love their super thin pancakes (they may be thin, but they are super filling). if you want something other then breakfast they have lunch items as well. The club is really good! The staff is really nice and extremely patient for having a packed joint. We had to wait but not for long and it of course was worth it

  • Anthony S.

This is a great little breakfast spot that has been around for a LONG LONG time. Its pretty standard breakfast fair but there's something I like about the place. They also have good grits and friendly staff who are attentive and punctual.

One of the best local breakfast places. I always get pancakes here. Thy make them nice and crispy! Coffee is always good. Serves are friendly and so are other customers. Over all enjoyable experience

Tammy has elevated the art of the Omlet to near perfection!! Tourists please take the time to investigate this locals hangout. I am a "Road Warrior" and have never had a better breakfast after over 40 years on the road. Lucky me - I live here now ...

  • Larry D.

Excellent! Always great to find where the locals eat. This is where! I was joined by a group of friends at 6 am on a Saturday and the place was already half full. Surprisingly big portions at very reasonable prices. Big yet fluffy omelet with very fresh veggies and a fresh baked biscuit hit the spot. No complaints. Authentic American diner fare with a local flair.

  • Charla R.

Great local spot that feels like home! The staff is friendly, the prices are low, and the food is sooooo good! My favorite is the biscuits and Tomato Gravy! I could eat that gravy every day. It's is so creamy with chunks of tomato. My son loves the pancakes.

  • CC C.

Went here on a Saturday around 11AM for breakfast. It's a classic diner. We sat at the counter and ordered. My wife had the egg sandwich and I had the biscuits and sausage gravy (needed more pepper). Decent & hearty. The bacon could have been cooked on the flat top a tad longer. Like other reviewers, the coffee is super-weak. Someone at another table had French toast which looked quite good and is on the radar for next time. Service was very friendly. FYI - the "Nassau grits" dish is grits cooked in tomato sauce with bacon, onions, and bell peppers. It's OK.

    (3)
  • Lisa G.

It was a decent breakfast. A little smoky(burnt smell) since it's open cooking like Waffle House. I liked the waffle, it was thin and tasted like a pancake. I did not like the Nassau grits. When she explained it. It sounded delicious. But the overwhelming tomato in them felt more like a concoction. The corn beef hash was a Patty not very crisp - so I'll let you decide. The service and home town feel was awesome though!

  • Michael C.

The Nassau grits are the best grits I've ever had! The food is always amazing and the staff is great! Never a bad experience here and recommend anyone heading over if they want great food and no frills. Just get there early in the weekends...gets a bit crowded.

  • Christine G.

Great food and service at a great price. Loved the grits, Nassau grits, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, and bacon. Nothing subpar! Oj was real and no funny taste like some places. Everyone was friendly. Would go again for sure!

Thanks Yelp! What a great place for breakfast! This place has plenty of parking out back, and the restaurant itself is pretty big. I went here for a hearty breakfast and was not disappointed. I had eggs, bacon, hash browns, and a biscuit. All of it was really good and my eggs were cooked perfectly. As one would guess by the name the coffee here is really good. The waitresses are very friendly, and to top it all off the place is inexpensive. You could get a hearty breakfast for under $5 if you were so inclined. The next time I am in Pensacola, I will definitely go back.

Coffee cup is a Pensacola Tradition. You are taken straight back in time by their barstools that must be fifty years old and their huge percolator to match. The line cook makes every order from MEMORY of the seasoned servers calling it out. This is a throwback for sure, but a welcome one. I love the biscuits and sausage gravy. They are open super early and I recommend going at that time unless you want to feel rushed (at peak times there is almost always a line). The service is perfunctory but attentive (your coffee cup will not go empty) and the food is freshly made right in front of you. This is a great place for a quick hearty breakfast because if you wanted to be you could be in and out quite quickly. It truly is a Pensacola gem.

I am hesitant to review this place considering I don't want anyone else to know about it! As a G.R.I.T. (girl raised in the south) I take my grits seriously. Instant grits are a sin and so are watery, over processed grits. I have been on a quest since I was a child for grits that tasted half as good as my Mama's and Coffee Cup surpassed my expectations. Within my first two bites, I was transported to heaven where I high-fived Jesus and came back down to earth. The grits are so rich and thick you can use them as wallpaper paste. I can eat at least 2 bowls and be full for days! There is a huge pot behind the counter they stir every now and again and I have been half tempted to run out of the restaurant with it but I have a feeling I'd be chased with torches! The motto here is "No Grits-No Glory" and Coffee Cup means it! This place is where the locals go to meet, everyone knows your first name and the daily gossip is on everyones tongue.

We use to stop in this place for breakfast every time we made the trip down Scenic Hwy heading to the Navy base, Then one morning my wife and I were seated at a small table in the back near the kitchen next to an older couple and for some reason my wife just could not stand the fact that the picture hanging on the wall next to us was crooked, So she reached up to straighten it out and when she did a Swarm of Cockroaches that had sought refuge there after a night of running around the kitchen and dining area ran out from behind it, Some headed to the kitchen and up and underneath the counter, and a few took refuge under the condiments on our table and the one next to us, The waitress seen it as well as a few other people, and all of us got up from our tables and walked out.

A greasy spoon that serves pretty basic breakfast items and weekday home-style lunch specials. The ladies are the sweetest. Food is delicious. I always like the eggs scrambled with a side of corn beef hash.

I can sum up my recent visit in one word GRITS! They still have THE BEST grits in the city. My brother and I popped in here for a quick breakfast on Saturday after picking up some seafood. He had never been...not sure how that is but he doesn't get out much when he comes home. I had my regular...big bowl of hot grits, 2 pieces of toast, & a side of bacon. I honestly could have had 2 bowls.....so darn creamy and rich! I try to come here at least twice when I am in town....miss the old cook cause she was always fun to chat with. See ya'll soon!

  • Nellie G.

Quaint place. Unfortunately, instead of finding a good cup o' Joe I found a rather greasy spoon diner. So hopefully you're not in search of a good cup of coffee because it's weak. The service was good and the servers were attentive. The food was pretty good but nothing special. Oh my jebus don't watch them prepare your food or you may not be able to stomach eating it! Not sure what sanitation measures FL requires but all I can say is I'm glad I didn't get more than scrambled eggs and oatmeal... Less contact with hands that may or may not have been washed.

Cracker Barrel Treatment!!! We came to Coffee Cup on a recommendation from my friend who visits this place every time her group comes into town. My teenage son and his 2 friends and I were in Pensacola Beach for Spring Break. We stopped by before catching out flight. The airport is only a few minutes away. When we came in, the lady at the desk said pick a table from the 2 that are opened in the back. We picked the booth in the back. Other people came in later and took the other table(Table 2). We were looking thru the menu and later on the waitress came to get our drinks order. Everything seemed fine. The next thing I knew, the waitress had already gotten the table 2 their drinks and order. Fine. Meanwhile a third table opened up in her section, and she got their drink orders before coming back to us for our food order. Fine. We got our drinks. Then she gave 3rd table the drinks and took our food order and took table 3's food order. We waited and waited. Table 2 got their food. Table 3 got their food. Tables in other sections of the restaurant that came in 30 minutes after us got their food. Tables came in after us, got their food and left before we got ours. We are still waiting. Finally my son's friends got their food. Mine and my son's came later. Only 1/2 of my son's order came. They didn't have enough hash brown so they gave him what they had for now. Our orders were very simple: I had nassau grits and ONE egg over easy, my son had PLAIN omelet, toast, and hash brown. Friend 1 had ONE biscuit and ONE sausage. Friend 2 had an egg sandwich. No apology, no nothing. I posted my dismay on their Facebook page and they deleted it. The worst part is we missed our flight. We are really hoping this is not a case of Cracker Barrel treatment since my son and I are Asians. The food is nothing special. My son's friend that had the egg sandwich said Friend 2(a teenager) can make a better egg sandwich than Coffee Cup.

If there was a way to smuggle this place back to Orlando, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Then again.. probably best for my arteries if this isn't so close. Anyway... TOMATO GRAVY. That's it. Right there, that is best thing on the menu. Ok, the Nassau grits are amazing too but they are made with ham so I can't partake. The tomato gravy though... that I could eat every day, on anything, and be perfectly happy for the rest of my life. The corned beef hash is still awesome. Eggs made to order, exactly as you order them. They know the difference between over easy, medium and hard. No fooling around here. Love this place... LOVE IT!

Home style southern breakfast food!! Definitely stuck in the past with its Dirty decor! Don' t plan on eating healthy here. I think Paul Dean shared recipes because there is butter on everything! The wait staff is great with photographic memories!!

For an out-of-town beach visitor, it might sound not worth it to find a local diner in downtown Pensacola. After all, beach vacations are all about staying at your hotel and eating fish tacos by the pool. Well. Snap out of it!!! I ate here the other day and had the best grits and hashbrowns I've ever eaten, as well as one hell of an omelette. My friend said her eggs were cooked to absolute perfection. Great coffee too! This little old diner (open since 1945) is very convenient for out-of-towners because its only a couple of blocks from I-110. So its basically on the way to the beach. It's cheap and authentic and well worth your time!

Went for breakfast this morning. This was the first time we ever sat in a booth. Usually they're all full and only tables or the counter are free. Well, as the day would have it- I will never sit in one of their booths again! The people sitting opposite of me pushed my seat constantly. It was extremely annoying. At one point I jolted back at them with all my strength to make the aware of what they were doing. The booths are not secured to the floor or the wall. They're just floating around which made it really hard to relax. Anyway... I ordered the 1 egg breakfast with dry wheat toast, sausage links and hashbrowns... and coffee of course. Their hashbrowns and coffee were awful today! There was a different cook behind the line... her hashbrowns definitely suck. I don't know what was going on with the coffee though?! My boyfriend found a bone or tooth of sorts in the ham in his omlette. Hmmm... let's just say we'll probably wait a while before returning.

I love love love breakfast and was looking forward to my first visit since this came highly recommend. I ordered an omelet with everything on it with a side of hash and there was just no seasoning on anything. It was just very bland and honestly heart broken that it wasnt what I thought it was going to be. It is a cool 50s diner atmosphere and service was great...maybe I just ordered the wrong thing? I dunno...I'll try again another day.

Some of the best pancakes I've ever had. This is a cute little local diner with lots charm. The waitresses are all very nice and they all wear tank tops.

I grew up hearing that this place was the best place for breakfast in town. For some reason it didn't make it there until i was 30. The first time was great and the second time was awful.( send your food back to the kitchen awful) the first time i ordered everythign that i would have at a waffle house and it was all excellent. Awful for your health but delicious. the second time i visited i tried to be a little healthier and so i ordered an omelette with veggies. The thing was literally oozing butter. i sopped it up with my napkin and it continued to ooze and ooze and ooze. I sent it back and what returned was atelast edible. Maybe the moral of the story is don't attempt to eat healthy while out to eat in the south, atleast not at this greasy spoon.

When I lived here 4 years ago, I came here on the last day before I left town, and had a great diner breakfast. I still have a photo of myself and my friends grubbing here before I left town. Great place.

There is no way to make you understand how much we miss this place. Cheap, great time-warp feel, fantastic breakfast (go for an omelet), and the Nassau Grits?... everyone from slacker kids to executive types know this....you won't find better grits anywhere. I won't even let myself attempt to recreate them at home...it would just be too depressing. It is small, sometimes you may have to wait for a table...but usually not very long, and if there's a spot at the counter, belly up and enjoy the show. Great fun watching someone that knows what they are doing in a kitchen.

I would consider The Coffee Cup as being one of Pensacola's hidden gems because of their lack of advertising. The only reason I knew about it was through Yelp. My family came for a Saturday brunch, since we ALL slept in. I will have to admit, it wasn't particularly healthy, but it was very delicious, nonetheless. And yes, I would agree that Paula Deen might have affiliations with TCC, because they seem to want to add a lot of "love" (butter) to everything. I wasn't really into the Nassau grits, which everyone recommended to me. The omelet my daughter ordered was HUGE. They must have at least used 3-4 eggs to make that thing. My wife, myself, and my son all ordered the 2-egg breakfast, which was very hearty. The prices here are very good, comparable to that of Waffle House, but with better food.

The coffee was meh, the pork loin was amazing but I can do better at home in my own kitchen. Service was rushed and impersonal, too.

This place is the next best thing to a time machine. The decor hasn't changed since 1950. Talk about old school, in a good way! They have fresh pies on the counter, AWSOME breakfast, cheap but good coffee, and the best grits i've ever had. Go for breakfast but there is probably going to be a line to get in. Skip IHOP and get down to the Coffee Cup!

    (4)
  • Misty T.

Good place to grab a dirt cheap breakfast. The inside isn't anything pretty at all but seriously me and my husband had so much food and we left with a check less then $8. The place was overstaffed when we were there, not a bad thing at all. The waitress was very pleasant.

    (4)
  • Johnny W.

First time here after living here for almost 5 years. Just your good old fashioned breakfast place. They also serve lunch but we had breakfast. The plain grits are perfect and the Nassau grits are good and spicy. The omelettes are huge, the service was good ole southern friendly.

  • Kris P.

Number 3? Really? I've heard so many great things about the Coffee Cup from various people ranging in age, race, gender... discretionary income, and I have to say I was a bit disappointed when I went. The food was ok, and the service was ok, not spectacular. When I asked for a grapefruit, I got one that was shriveled up and (probably) 3 days old. The only real good thing I hear about the place is that all the "movers and shakers" of Pensacola go there. So, if that's your kind of crowd, and you love schmoozing, then this place would be great for you.

  • Marian B.

A true Pensacola staple! This place offers the best greasy/hangover breakfast in town. I bring all my visitors to this place after a fun night on the town!

Have been a customer here intermittently (more later) for years. World's best grits. Don't sit at the counter unless you have short legs; it was sized for smaller people when it was built. Staff are friendly and attentive. Coffee is always spot on. The hostess will be calling you by name by your second or third visit. Decor remains a time warp and adds to the charm; don't think stainless steel had been invented yet when this place opened. Luncheon specials are great value. Food is southern comfort food. Pancakes are slow rise, slow cook, melt in your mouth type. When I first arrived in town, my partners recommended this place for lunch. When I noticed that they did not eat there often, I asked why and was told I would find out. Two months later and 15 pounds heavier, I did. Now I eat there only intemittently.

Got onto Yelp to find out where to eat a good breakfast in Pensacola and THIS was a great suggestion! The line was out the door, but moved quickly. Try to sit at the counter as the cook working at the grill behind the counter is absolutely AMAZING ! She keeps all the orders for the counter IN HER HEAD and boy, does she know how to cook! The waitresses were FUNNY and very friendly to everyone. Coffee was ok but eating at the Coffee Cup hearkens back to a 50's diner and well worth the stop!
