The Tonkotsu ramen is the BEST!! So flavorful and savory!!! I finished it off pretty quickly. I also got to try the Pork Katsu (by stealing my friends food xD) and it was seasoned and cooked perfectly. So good! The sushi and gyoza are also really yummy. I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to try quality Japanese food!

Sorry no pics...I guess I was hungry and wasn't really thinking about pictures :) This place is pretty nondescript on the outside (in the strip mall at Tinseltown just south of the Gate gas station and Burger King), but WOW when you walk in. Beautifully decorated, small but able to make you feel like your table is "private", and then there's the food! We only had sushi and we were very impressed. They have photos of some of their sushi rolls so you have an idea of what you're getting into (helps to try new things). I judge most sushi places based on their Tuna Tataki - Oishii has some of the most tender, like butter on your tongue tuna. I usually like more ponzu sauce and did not with this one - just delicious. Had the Naruta (very well made - most other places do not slice the cucumber thin enough or do not wrap it tight enough and it falls apart, not so here), Oishii special roll (fried, batter was light and didn't overpower the roll, very good), Rainbow roll (my least favorite and I'd still order it again), and the Crazy Pizza roll (very big, neat looking, triangle thing! I like to eat my sushi in one bite and this is too challenging with this one - good but not a one bite roll). All in all, very impressed and will go again. All were beautifully presented.

We came here for lunch Friday at around 1pm. There wasn't any customers at the restaurant. It was dark inside, and I really liked their lighting and their modern design. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen because it was recommended to me by a friend. My wife got the shrimp tempura roll and the Fire Dragon roll. Tonkotsu ramen: 4 out of 5 I was really looking forward to this all week, but I ended up not liking it as much as I thought I would. The noodles themselves were of superior quality. The texture of the noodles were chewy and slightly firm, and I liked it. What I didn't like was the broth. I found it not very flavorful and bland. But overall, I still enjoyed the ramen. However, for the price of $12, I expected it to be a whole lot better! You could get an order of Pho with a lot of meat and noodles for $8 at PK noodles. But this is ramen, and I think this is the only restaurant in the area that has it. On the other hand, my wife loved the ramen, and said it's one of the best/highest quality ramen she has ever had. She enjoyed the broth as well. Shrimp tempura roll: 4 out of 5 Pretty tasty! I really loved how the sushi rice was done, and it was probably the best sushi rice I've had in Jacksonville. We were surprised they put LETTUCE in shrimp tempura roll, so we thought it was going to be gross. It turned out that the lettuce was sweet & fresh, and it went really well with the shrimp tempura. My wife originally ordered shrimp tempera roll as a side for her Fire Dragon roll, but she ended up liking the shrimp tempura roll more. Fire Dragon Roll: 3 out of 5 It was okay. It tasted very bland, and the only thing we tasted was the tsukemono (japanese sweet pickle). One good thing about this roll was that they used real tobiko on the sushi. It was still very disappointing considering it costs $9.00! Pros: Very fresh and high quality ingredients Good sushi rice Real Japanese sushi chef Plays Japanese music Nice decorations and good atmosphere Cons: Some of their food were a little bland The prices were a lot more expensive than Japanese restaurants around here I would come here again and try some of their sushi rolls with raw fish and perhaps some salmon sashimi.

I have been to Oishii a couple of times and thought the food was ok. I have tried their ramen, several different sushi rolls, curry, and habachi plate. The ramen was not the best I've had. Not even close. But given it's in Jacksonville, where there is no dedicated ramen shop and that this is really a sushi restaurant, I thought it was decent (though very pricey). My wife ordered their scallop and steak hibachi one time and asked for 'medium' on the steak. Well, the steak was cook beyond well done. The scallops were seared on one side only (i.e. good coloring on one side and no color on the other). As for the sushi, there are some really good, creative sushi rolls and then some we didn't enjoy. But that's just something to experiment and find out what your preferences are.

This place is pretty good but it definitely has some room for improvement. I've been here twice already and I never leave unhappy but I also never leave very happy. Hence why I'm giving it the three stars. Last night I came in with my brother, his girlfriend and my daughter. My daughter was pretty hungry so they brought out her chicken udon noodles first. The noodles were pretty tasty. They gave me the option of one vegetable in the noodles after I asked. I requested broccoli for my daughter which was perfectly cooked. Still had a bit of crisp which was nice. The chicken strips were also cooked well. Not to dry and they were pretty soft. The only problem with the noodles was that the udons were all cut up into little pieces. Not sure if this was done because my child is little or if this is how it's normally served. The chicken tempura dinner was okay. Just fried veggies and chicken strips. I am normally okay with that but there was not a single piece of panko breading on this dish. The breading was light and fluffy but not typical of good tempura. The veggies were also a bit oily and soaked thru the batter. They were nice enough to switch the salad for soup since neither me or my daughter would eat it. The staff was friendly but somehow we couldn't get any napkins for the table. I definitely wouldn't turn down coming here with a group of friends but I also won't be making any special trips.

This place was great! My tried and true Fuji decided to be closed on Sunday's (because no one wants sushi on Sunday ) and I had been meaning to try oishii for awhile now. We were feeling the munch and went for the croquette and calamari appetizers, seaweed salad to start. Croquette was as described yet so much better. Warm potato inside a light crispy exterior, taste was bursting with umami, reminded me of okonomiyaki. Would probably skip the calamari next time, it was a little tough. Seaweed salad was fresh with good flavor, not too briny. Had the mermaid roll, which was fresh, simple and good with 3 types of fish inside. Eel avocado role was silky and delightful. On point. One of the best dishes was my husbands entree. Don Katsu pork with curry. The pork was so tender and well fried, curry was absolutely delicious. Can't wait to try the ramen!

Great place to eat sushi and ramen. I had the Pink Lady Roll, the Mermaid Roll, and Naruto Roll. Very well prepared and delicious with or without the white shrimp sauce. The Mermaid roll has tuna, salmon, yellowtail, tobiko (the tiny orange fish eggs) avocado, cucumber, and scallion wrapped with a white soybean paper. The pink lady has shrimp tempura, avocado, spicy crabmeat (not that spicy to me), cucumber wrapped with pink soybean paper. The Naruto roll, you can choose between tuna, salmon, crab, spicy tuna or spicy salmon wrapped in very thin slices of cucumber and no rice (very good for low-carb). I had the tuna Naruto roll and it comes with a special sauce (forgot the name of it, but was good) not tempura sauce or soy sauce. I really enjoyed my dinner and the staff were friendly and attentive.

Not impressed I ordered the lunch special today 2 rolls spicy shrimp and spicy shrimp with mango. What I got was a rice roll filled with Panko breading. You can barely see a very very small piece of shrimp and even smaller piece of mango. If I wasn't starving and already back at work id take it back. Also these rolls everywhere else come with steamed shrimp not fried so I'm just overall disappointed.

Oh my god. Two hundred seventeen thousand stars. I'm not afraid to admit how snobby I am about food, service and sushi in particular. I travel every week, all over the U.S. And I have to say I am SO HAPPY. I ordered sushi off of the "fresh in house" list posted at my table and it was beyond fresh and amazing. If you're a business traveler or local who hasn't been here yet I highly recommend the sushi here at Oishii. Kani salad was on point too

Great solid sushi place on Southside Blvd. After burning some calories and then imbibing some calories, we were in search of food. We were all in the mood for sushi & using our trusty little app we found a place that wasn't too far away. We decided to each pick out two rolls and would share everything at the table. Definitely offers a lot of variety. For this round we went with the Lion King, Sweet Heart, Mexican, Black Angel, Fire Dragon, and Oishii Special. The Black Angel sticks out in my mind as it was the last to arrive to the table and it was piping hot. Definitely a couple of these I would order again, but I might venture to try more on the menu first. And like others have said, the plates were beautifully presented. Yes, I know, purists believe sushi shouldn't be cooked. But this was delicious. I will definitely have to remember this place the next time we're in the Tinseltown area and want to grab a bite to eat.

So amazing! Bento was packed so me and my bf looked up this place on Yelp and stopped in for the first time. What a pleasant experience! The people were so friendly our server was very sweet and helpful. The food was very good. We tried crab rangoons, the ramen, rock and roll roll, south side roll and the fusion roll. I would recommend all of the above. And the price was also very fair so that was nice too! At the end of our lovely meal the waitress gave us a box of pocky for a Valentine's Day treat. I've never been to Japan or anything but his place just felt very authentic. The decor was also very aesthetically appealing. If you want some good sushi, Japanese food and just a good atmosphere overall give this place a try!!!!

Some people just want sushi and others want more authentic options beyond what you would find in your run of the mill Japanese restaurant. This gem of a restaurant on Southside is everything you want and more. My date and I haven't had a tremendous amount of sushi here, but she and I both judge a sushi bar by the freshness of its ikka or squid. Here, it is very fresh, not tough, and quite tasty where usually it is a bland protein. With the fresh ginger that accompanies it, the squid is amazing. But what I really really love about this place is its ramen which comes with all the proper accoutrements like fish cake and a few greens, seaweed, etc. I can't even begin to describe the different flavors in each type of broth. The shoyu broth is light but flavorful, nebeyaki udon broth is more intense and feels heavier but is also delicious. Wasn't a big fan of the tonkotsu but I can see why people would like it. The service is great, decor is family style and not fancy. But for your neighbohood sushi stop, this is your best bet in Jacksonville. 5 easy stars!!

This place was a mixed bag. Definitely has potential for being my local, inexpensive sushi/hibachi place, but has some room for improvement. For starters, the service was great; fast, attentive, courteous, and not overwhelming. Our server did a great job! The food was good, the portions were good, and the presentation (while just slightly over-done) was pretty good. BUT (you knew it was coming, right?) my steak and shrimp combo from the hibachi arrived with a steak that was *perfectly* cooked... but luke warm to the touch. Did they cook it first and let it sit on the plate while they finished the rest of the meal? If so, then that is a major disadvantage when compared to 'table-side' hibachis like Kan Ki, Sakura, Shogun, and Mikado. That is my only "complaint" (I'd rather use the phrase of 'good opportunity for improvement'). Another Yelper noted the decor was a little weird, and I have to agree. They are right in the middle of an upscale, hip restaurant, and the cheesy Chinese take out I used to go to in college. I say: ditch the photos stapled on the wall, along with the comic posters (which I have no earthly idea why they are there in the first place), and brighten up the room just a tad. Those things and a better, uniform temperature of the food on the plate will make it 5-stars--these guys have *all* the ingredients to be a rock star restaurant, now it's just time to get them cooking! Oh, and ditch the rice scoop! :)

Awesome place for sushi. Small and intimate yet modern design. Fair prices too We had the lion king roll, the spider roll, Alaska roll, and rock n roll roll. Absolutely delicious. beautifully plated. we weren't in at a crowded time, but the service was quick too! very nice little place. each roll was fresh and portioned well. I really liked oishii. I can't speak for the hibachi or ramen, but will be back soon to try more.

I visited on a Sunday evening after I checked into my hotel. The place was empty the entire time I was there. The staff was attentive (why wouldn't they be? I was the only one there) and the food was great. I ordered a bento box for dinner and agedashi tofu. My absolute favorite entree of the night was the agedashi tofu. The presentation was beautiful as it was delicious. I would definitely come back if I am ever back in Jacksonville.

After a few post workout beers, we needed some nibbles to soak up our sips and were craving something light, and I remember this place had quite a few Yelp fans, so off we went! The three of us were able to be seated right away, and beers and miso was ordered all around. Now I love a good broth-y soup, and this miso was packed with great flavor. It hit the spot and as we said at our table, it really "warmed the soul." We ordered two rolls a piece, with a plan to share so we could sample a bit of everything: the sweetheart, black angel, Mexican, spicy dragon, Oishii, and lion heart. All tasted pretty fresh, and the black angel and Oishii were my favorites, with the Mexican coming in a close third. While we had a good dinner, the ambiance was cool, and service was right on, the flavors in the rolls weren't anything extraordinary, but solid.... so that is why I'll give it 3 stars. A-Ok, but I don't see myself making a special trip.

BEST Japanese place I've been to in Jacksonville. Really fresh seafood, really good tonkatsu ramen, very well made sushi. I can't even begin to tell you how fresh, how delicious, how expertly everything was cooked/prepared. The sushi rice was perfectly cooked, not too soggy/dry/vinegar-y. The sushi was rolled really well, it didn't break apart like so many other "sushi" places. I can not wait to go back. Amazing service as well.

I had Tonkotsu ramen and its just ok. not bad but not good at all... Also had Sashimi. Sweet shrimp was yummy but 1 shrimp for 6 was pricy. Sea urchin was ok not good not bad. As Japanese, I dont think its authentic japanese food not even close... but at least better than other japanese restaurant that I know of around jax. I dont think I will come back but thanks for the food.

So Oishii was a nice find for a Monday night dinner experience. Recommended by one of the group, this space is well hidden in the maze of strip malls that now infest S' Side Blvd. Think Tochton & S' Side Blvd behind the Gate station. Stay right. At 6:30 it was pretty empty our 9 filled it out nicely. By the time we left (9:00) the room was full and this is not a spacious room. One waitress, and one Sushi Chef in the front of the house, unknown supporting staff behind the curtain. Service was flawless!!! Food too many combination ; Sushi, Sashimi, Noodles, Hibachi, Tempura, Bento boxes,Hand Rolls and Teriyaki. Usual beer with hot or cold Saki, and wine. Basically something for everyone. Our dinner choices incorporated most of these selections. (See the attached pics) The food was presented with a nice flair, dressed with splashes of colorful oils or sauces making the plates little works of art. The rice had just the correct amount of stickiness the fish well sliced, firm and chilled. Soba noodles were cooked to a delightful firmness not too salty in a tasty broth complemented by firm vegetables. Mixed Hibachi dish was tasty, with a generous portion of rice. A taste let me know it was little too salty for me, but this was not my dish. We were not too consumed but the dessert offerings; only two takers one Tempura Cheesecake (MISTAKE) and Green Tea Ice Cream. Tempura and Cheese Cake just don't cut it. Oily, mushy, warm geez makes me ill thinking about it. It was sent back and with out fanfare removed from the check. Tea ice cream was good but the attempt to Americanized it with whipped cream and chocolate syrup was a big fail. My meal was moderately priced comming in at 30.00$ with tip and that included the 100% markup on alcohol. If in the area I certainly would try it for lunch or dinner.

The ramen is legitness. I really like this place. I had the sho u ramen and it was exactly what I wanted. To top it off the sushi is pretty good too. Ramen a little over priced but still really good.

This is the best sushi place in Jacksonville, and trust me I have tried almost all of them. It is a small restaurant located near Tinseltown but the decor is very modern and clean. The server, who is the same lady both times we've been there is very sweet and has a good memory! The first time we went there hubby got the sushi and sashimi combo, but neither of us liked the conch or the octopus. When she came to clear the table she told us to just let them know next time and she will tell the chef to not put those on the plate. The next time we went, which was at least a month later, we were ordering and she remembered what he did not want! After just one visit she remembered our preferences, that is good customer service. Besides that, the fish is very fresh and the special rolls are delicious. The 2 I can remember the names are fusion roll and dragon roll, both very tasty. Good quality well rounded restaurant.

Everytime I visit here I tell myself im going to skip the ramen and go for sushi, im yet to do so. Their tonkatsu ramen (pork bone broth) has a nice depth of flavor , it's not just salty , it has an almost creamy appearance. The pork belly and egg are the usual stars for me and they certainly do shine. Noodles have a nice bite to them also. If I could change one thing is to perhaps offer roasted pork as well since the pork belly is very fatty. I will try to give an update once I try their sushi , but you need to go eat their ramen! And as for the staff, they seem very friendly and attentive to their guests.

I have high sushi standards. I blame my dad for that. One of my father's many jobs was a professional sushi chef as well as a hibachi chef, so I've always had high expectations of what an excellent roll of sushi looks like. Last week, my boyfriend and I had just gotten off of work and we were both starving, so we decided to eat out that night. I volunteered to check on Yelp and after scrolling for what seems to be ages, we found Oishii. After checking out the reviews and pictures, I noticed that they were now serving ramen and udon, so I definitely wanted to try that out. As a Jax native, you don't typically see a ramen noodle house around here. It's typically down SoFla that you see an abundance of them, so it was like finding a diamond in the rough when I saw it. My boyfriend is a die-hard orange chicken fanatic, so he was definitely for it. Anytime we go out to eat at a pan-Asian restaurant, he will ONLY order the orange chicken. In essence, he is literally the epitome of a basic white boy. When he discovered that they have it, of course he begged me to go. When we walked in, it was dimly lit. They had shades that blocked off all of the windows as well as the door, so it was quite dark. Once my eyes adjusted to it, it was quite nice inside. It was very clean and open, albeit a bit empty. They had K- or J-pop playing in the background, so that was kind of cute. Our host/waiter (whose name I forgot) was kind and courteous. Our other waitress, Nancy, was absolutely sweet and attentive. My boyfriend ordered the orange chicken (shocking, I know) and I ordered the Nabeyaki udon soup. We also ordered a dynamite roll for dine-in and later on ordered a bamboo roll and Spider Man roll to-go. He had a side of miso soup and house salad with ginger dressing. He liked the soup but the dressing for the salad was a bit sweet. Typically we like it tart and tangy, but it was too sweet and he couldn't finish it. Our food came out fast and piping hot. His chicken was absolutely delicious and the portion was huge. My udon was excellent. The only thing I would change probably is providing less narutomaki and more of the white fish. I had maybe 5-6 slices of naruto and a small flake of white fish that crumbled way too easily. Overall, our entrees were excellent. The sushi was great. It was firmly rolled, it was fresh, and just plain good. Their sushi might as well be added to my top 5 places to get sushi in Jax from now on... which may or may not be saying much, considering the amount of decent sushi places in this city. In my opinion, it's very hard to find a decent sushi bar in NEFL, especially on this side of town. There are several restaurants around here that are similar to Oishii, but they have awful sushi/service in general. (Won't say the name but it rhymes with Mento...) Would I say that this is the best sushi place in NEFL? Definitely not, but they're pretty good. Just give them a shot. A majority of their (positive) reviews are what made me come here the other night. You might also see some awful reviews on here, but don't let that dissuade you. Apparently complaining about the lack of panko breading on their tempura makes them a connoisseur of all types of tempuras. And their attendance as well as their usually mediocre reviews at a majority of Japanese steakhouses and sushi bars in Jax obviously shows how well versed and experienced they are about Japanese cuisine. (*Yep, throwing shade at you, Elizabeth M. Can't stand people like you who truly believe that Americanized Asian food in the US is literally authentic Asian cuisine. You saying that panko breading for tempura is the best way tempura should be presented is like me saying that Taco Bell's Quesarito is the best representation of Mexican food. Get over yourself.) Just ignore all of the biased reviews and experience it for yourself. Give this place a chance and I promise you, you won't regret it. Overall,10/10 and will be back!

I love this sushi joint, probably my fav in town! We came by for late Sunday lunch and it wasn't busy - probably the best time for this busy area of southside blvd/Tinseltown area. Staff is very friendly and offers great service. The sushi/sashimi list is extensive and reasonably priced. The speciality rolls were my favorite - esp the pizza roll. Between my husband and I, we ordered 5 rolls and it's was plenty enough to take home. We also ordered the avocado salad which was a great appetizer. We topped off our lunch with fried green tea cheesecake! It's a bit small for two people to share but it was delish! Glad it was small because if it were larger I'd eat it all and feel guilty. Overall it's a great sushi joint. One of my favs behind Sushi Bistro in San Francisco! Now I've got to try Sushi Diner in San Diego and see the hype.

The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Thursday, June 6, 2013. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. There seems to be no shortage of strip-center Asian concepts on the Southside these days. One of the newest contenders is Oishii Japanese Fusion, which opened in January just north of Tinseltown. The upstart has a tall order to fill in the space of the former Yo Sushi!, although it's been extensively renovated in darker tones with blue accents. Plus, any place that brands itself as "delicious," especially in Japanese (practice it with me ... 'o-E-shee'), has to meet certain expectations. Since all good reviewers prepare, I skipped breakfast with the hope that Oishii would fill these expectations, and my lunchtime appetite. In many ways, Oishii is a capable lunching spot or casual evening out that offers good value and variety, with a menu that spans the full Japanese palate. You'll find a tidal wave of sushi and sashimi selections, hibachi (no tableside theatrics here), noodle, tempura and teriyaki dishes. Beer, wine and hot and cold sake provide a fine complement, but if you don't find your adult beverage of choice, bring your own for a $5 corking fee. As far as the "fusion" in the name, our server explained that you'll find it in the cosmetic preparation of the dishes (think Mexican and Crazy Pizza specialty rolls), not the culinary melding of cuisines a la Blue Bamboo. That's a shame. We began with the Spring Rolls (4 pieces total; $3.50), which were lightly fried with a melty center of meat and veggies. I personally go for crispy over melty, but they were acceptable if not memorable, and just enough for two. Our entrees came with miso soup ($2 if ordered a la carte), a clear broth with tofu cubes that did the job without fanfare. Oishii offers a great many lunch specials daily (except Sunday), ranging from $6 to $13. My friend ordered the Bento Box with Teriyaki Chicken ($9), a great way to go if you want variety, or just don't want your portions to touch. The highlight of his box was the Gyoza, the Japanese equivalent of Chinese potstickers or dumplings, which were pan-fried, plump and inviting. The teriyaki glaze atop the chicken was thick, which some might find excessive, but the underlying meat was tender and easy to like. Oishii's well-stocked sushi bar offers dozens of flavors, from a la carte sashimi to more than 20 specialty rolls. I dialed up the Spicy Crab Roll ($4), which came in six pieces and was satisfyingly crunchy, if a tad-bit on the salty side. My main course was the Chicken Yaki Soba Stir-fry ($8), a tasty (if ... once again ... salty) tangle of noodles with thin slices of chicken ... and not much else. Oishii caters to its sweet-toothed guests with an assortment of cheesecake and ice cream, conventional and fried. My friend tried the Green Tea Cheesecake ($4), which arrived as two thin triangles, neatly surrounded by hearts of strawberry syrup more fitting for date night than lunch with a friend. The thick, rich cheesecake made the relatively thin slices plenty satisfying. My Mochi Ice Cream ($4) came in strawberry and mango flavors, with each "slice" coated in a thin rice cake that made them easier to enjoy with fingers than with a spoon. These earned my "delicious" designation. Service was prompt and friendly. However if you're not so skilled in the ways of chopsticks, ask for a knife and fork. I can't say Oishii is an across-the-board "delicious," but you will find intermittent flashes of "tasty" here. I'd love to revisit once they trim the salt and introduce true fusion concepts. Oishii is definitely one of the best places to get sushi in Jacksonville. They did a great job at taking a space that isn't large and making it comfortable and stylish. The service was great, our waitress was extremely amiable and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job. The food is mostly traditional, tastes great, and is presented beautifully.

Awesome little place. We came at an off time, so we were the only ones there. The good was great! We both ordered the lunch chicken hibachi, both with a salad with ginger, he got fried rice and I ordered noodles. It was wonderful. So glad we found a place that offers noodles instead of fried rice. Oh and the portions were huge! I figured it would be smaller since it was so much less money for lunch, but we could have split the meal for sure! I had plent of left overs. We also ordered a dynamite roll which was really yummy. We will definitely return!

I expected this place to be so much better. Everything we ordered was bland. Everything. All the food looked great but just no taste. The only good things about this place was the atmosphere and the server. She was really attentive and sweet. I think her name was Nancy.

This is my go-to for sushi on the southside of town! My friend and I absolutely love this place. I stumbled upon this place thanks to Yelp and it was a great find. They have pictures on the wall next to each booth of the rolls they offer, I happen to think it is a neat idea so I can have a visual of what I would be ordering. They are located in a strip next to a Papa Johns and Sub place. It is a smaller restaurant with maybe 7 or 8 booths. The wine list is not extensive, basic red and whites. We normally choose the Woodbridge Pinot Grigio which is nice. (preferred over Barefoot) On my first visit I asked the waitress her recommendation and the Yellowtail Jalapeno Roll was it. I had never had yellowtail before so I did not know what to expect. This is my favorite roll and I almost always order it, the jalapeno isn't even what is hot about this roll, it is the tiny red dot of sauce that can put your mouth on fire. My friend is in love with the Mexican Roll which has shrimp and other goodies. My never fail is the Alaskan Roll and they do a nice job, there is nothing fancy about this roll it is just very light and tasty. (you could eat as many as you'd like and not feel bloated) I visit this place strictly for the sushi and have not tried anything from the grill. The edamame is what you would expect as is the crab ragoon and spring rolls. All very yummy so you won't be disappointed. This place is rarely very busy but we find this a positive thing as there is no waiting for service. This could be attributed to the day/time I frequent this restaurant though. Highly recommend!

I tried the spicy tonkosu and it was good. Probably the better one that JAX has to offer. I wish it had the same flavor as you would find back in Japan. The Hamachi Cama fish was good. I've never tried that fish before. Good flavor of fish since it was my first time. A bit pricy though.

I am so sorry for what has happened to this place. It WAS only the third sushi place we had encountered in NE FL (out of how many hundreds?) with both excellent sashimi and sushi. A month or so ago we were disappointed with the quality -- the sashimi had been "chunked", as though cut for bait -- and inquired. We received a long, glowing review for the new chef from our server, the center of which was "he is from JAPAN!" We treated this with a bit of skepticism as a chef's country of origin is not important... But training, temperament, and artistry IS. Our next visit: none of the sashimi was fresh. Not even the salmon or tuna. The waitress (who is great!) remembered how I wanted my fish cut (she called it 'thin'... Though I didn't want it cut 'thin' as much as "well" or "skillfully"). But the sashimi was still against the grain and chewy. The sushi was all wet. A careful sushi chef would NEVER serve rolls that were sitting in a puddle of water (from cucumber, mango etc having condensation). Even from Looking at the man, he is large, gruff, and a bit sloppy. If being Japanese is his primary qualification, I would wholeheartedly suggest a samurai lifestyle over that of a sushi chef. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back, though this was a tough loss for us as well as for all true sushi enthusiasts (who would rather try the uni than eat 'lava fries'. Oh, jacksonville.).

The food was great and the waitress helped me get my order! The food tasted great but the price was a bit steep. The sashimi was fresh and good quality. The $10 chicken Katsu don will be my favorite menu item from here since the price is decent and the taste was great.

Not sure why this place doesn't have more great reviews. Maybe I just went on a good night, but I'm never going to another sushi place in Jacksonville if it keeps to this standard. Crazy Sushi (my previous fave) is good. It's tasty sushi at a reasonable price. And I'm not a person who suffers bad sushi. Oishii is a cut above that. The fish is fresher. The rice is more perfect. The service is better. The menu more interesting and varied. This is the place you go when you want to have an *experience* eating sushi. For basically the same price, I'll take Oishii every time.

I had ramen and it was just okay. My husband ordered Mexican roll but it was fair at best, not spicy. Not four stars.

Delicious ramen bowls and the hibachi dishes are very good! For some reason, the plain white rice was amazing! Try the Oishii Roll, delicious sushi roll.

This place is just what I like all around. Great serve, flavorful food, and right in the neighborhood. I been here a dozen times and I've had a great experience every time. My favorite dish Raman and the hibachi!

Great find whilst on a work trip! Easy walk over from my hotel. Service was phenomenal--very nice sushi chef and waitress. Went on a Thursday so it was dead (read: I was their lone customer), but I am never one to doubt my fellow Yelpers. Salmon, white tuna, shrimp, and red snapper tasted very fresh! The salmon and white tuna melts in your mouth. The regular tuna was the only one that was a little questionable, but I still ate it anyways because my mother told me to never waste food. All in all, very pleased. Definitely an upgrade from the Asian buffet I had last night... Why I thought that was a good idea... I've got nothing.

Dined here for lunch and had the 3 roll sushi combo which included a salad. 13 bucks. Sushi was good. Solid 4 stars. Ambience was good and service also.

The husband and I loved this place! We came on a whim after finishing up some errands and were very happy with the results. I ordered the bamboo roll and the husband ordered the spicy shrimp mango roll which he loved so much he wouldn't stop talking about it! Also concerning the decor and one previous reviewer's comment about "the comic posters", the posters are wanted posters from the anime One Piece. They are a minute bit cheesy but we both thought it was pretty amusing so we rather like them. My only suggestion would be to pick some more ambient music. It seemed like it was on a random playlist and I really don't want to hear country music while I eat sushi. : /

I have to say that after all the reviews I may have built up my expectations rather high. I wasn't blown away and it may have been the rolls I ordered. I had the sweet heart roll which was good and the crazy pizza that I wasn't crazy about. The rice was cooked well but i was hoping for. 4.5 star experience and didn't get it. Service was fine and the restaurant is clean. I would come back.

They recently re-opened under this new name. I give this place five stars all the way. My friend got sushi and I got the chicken hibachi.... both meals were absolutely amazing. The staff is super friendly, the restaurant a little small but personable and clean, the food top notch. Will be back again soon!

I came here because it was the only place in Jax that had ramen on the menu, and it did not disappoint! They have amazing lunch specials that I can't wait to try next time I come visit, which will definitely happen.

Traditional and authentic! After living in Japan for three years, I must say this place gets an A (it should, the chef is from Tokyo). Excellent ramen and sushi. Some traditional dishes you won't find at most places. They can make specialty items during the busy days only since that's when the chef is there. Small place, quiet, clean and very nice. Will for sure go back for tonkatsu ramen, onigiri and sushi!

Finally decided to come back here since I've been on a hiatus since Feb. of their grand opening. Upon entering it was more intimate since I last remembered. The black shades over the windows created a cozy atmosphere which were aided by the ambient dim blue & white lights. Tres chic! Sadly, the modern decor was detracted by the hand mounted pictures that displayed the walls of each both. Why ruin a good thing you had going? The images would have been better off in a picturesque sushi booklet. Regardless these seemed to be minuscule offenses. Our waitress immediately made us feel welcomed & took our drink orders. She was very attentive & gave recommendations on what new sushi rolls I should try. Our orders didn't take too long to come out. I greatly enjoyed the house special seafood salad, while the husband had miso soup & ginger salad. My soy wrapped mermaid roll & the spicy yellow tail sushi came out soon thereafter. It was so good I almost finished everything except the four rolls of the yellow tail. The S.O ordered the beef hibachi bento box. Very generous portions of beef with steamed rice. It also came with other sides such as the flavorful juicy pork gyoza (I tried one), California roll, & tempura veggies. Very fulfilling. Service was impeccable & food was fresh + delish = frelish!!! There are surprising few things my husband hates and one of them is Japanese food. I'm glad to say he enjoyed it here. Plus, I've saved some of the waitress' recommended suggestions so that means we will be back soon enough. Will try the fire roll next time.

Came in on a quiet Sunday afternoon, very nice atmosphere, small and personable. My first time in new sushi restaraunt I like to try a couple basic rolls and a signature roll. I like spicy food so I went with a spicy krab and spicy tuna, and for the signature roll tried the Mexican roll. Both basic rolls were very enjoyable and favorably priced, the signature roll was outstanding, flavor blends shined through an the black pepper salmon was perfectly seasoned. I would have given 5 stars but the entire time I was here all they played on the radio was whiney r&b and pop mashups; not really my thing. Food definitely gets 5 stars.

I have been to a few sushi resteraunts in this area and Oishi by far is the best. I have had 4 different rolls and all were delicious. The fish is very fresh. And the service is always wonderful.

I have no complaints about this place, the sweetheart roll was delicious - we also had the Naruto roll with Spicy Tuna - wasn't my favorite but it was still very good. Finished off with Yellowtail Belly Sashimi which was amazing as always. I think I have found my new favorite sushi spot in Jax.

Wow, the reviews to this place is crazy! Clearly, Jacksonville has a lack of good sushi joints and Jacksonvillians have no idea what an exceptional 5-star sushi place is (I'm thinking Masa in Newport Beach, CA... man I miss that place... sigh). That being said, this is probably the BEST place in town for sushi. Their fish is fresh, their service is great, and the ambience is nice. Most importantly, their fish is fresh. Seriously... I've been to some sushi places around town that serve fishy-smelling fish... c'mon! But not this place... this place, their fish is fresh. Should I repeat that again because that's super important! Definitely would come back!

This place I had high hopes for. Great service, very friendly and helpful. If I was rating this place based by that it would be a 5 out of 5. The inside is alright looking. The food, ugh, I'm on the fence of horrible and meh. I guess I'm saying horrible because I was hoping for so much more. It was very mediocre. I think I would rather just go to publix to get sushi. Some of the rolls had this weird skin looking stuff that I can't remember the name of on it which itself tasted awful. The flavors weren't there and when they were, they didn't go so well. The pricing was alright, people always complain about the pricing, but sushi isn't something thats cheap. My biggest concern is taste & cleanliness then price then service. I'm going to stick to Kazu.

Where do I start, this place is fantastic. When I first walked in I just knew I was gonna have a great experience. The ambiance makes you feel like Tokyo is right outside the door. The sushi bar itself is stunning, and the experts behind the counter prepare the sushi with flawless skill. I had a simple yet decadent order, two tuna rolls and one yellow tail scallion roll. The best sushi I've ever had, and trust me I have had it many places, even at some of Disney's best Japanese restaurants and sushi bars. To finish off my night, I enjoyed a large bottle hot sake, it too was on point. Lastly, the waitresses here are very pretty and are so nice. Don't go anywhere else if you are in the area, please hit up Oishii.

Excellent food, quick and knowledgable service, decent prices. It is really a small space but it feels nice. You are able to see a sushi chef working right in front of you. Food presentation is also very nice. Alcohol selection is fine, there are beers and sake, enough to choose from. I would definitely recommend this place!

  • Chelsea S.

I enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. I ordered a hot sake, the waitress had recommended it, and it tasted like warm, very cheap Riesling. Not a fan of that. I also ordered the lobster tempura roll. The lobster may have been slightly overcooked, making the roll very chewy. I prefer crazy sushi.

Great sushi and service. My husband usually orders extra spicy mayo when we go out for sushi because most places fall short on flavor and spice. The sushi was just perfect! I recommend the spicy salmon roll but my hubs really enjoyed their Spicy Mexican roll-- beware, it's pretty spicy. I Recommend to all sushi connoisseurs.

Many years Jacksonville residents have waited for authentic sushi to come back to the SouthSide. Oishii had taken up the flag to represent Sushi made with care and discipline. The chef from NYC reminded me of those grand days of Yoshi from the 1990's. The balance of rice, vinegar and correct temp. is what Sushi purists have been waiting almost ten years to return to JAX

I'm having a hard time deciding on how many stars to give this place. If I was basing it off of being in Florida, then they get 4. If I am basing is off of the rest of the US (specifically CA), then they get a 3. We just moved here from CA (after a few months of living in Pensacola with the worst sushi ever) so we thought we'd try it out here. I looked at reviews for every sushi restaurant in the area and none of them sounded like they were outstanding so we decided to give this one a try. It's in a little strip mall next to a Papa John's, so that seemed like a bit of a bad sign, but then when you walk in it has a good vibe and nice decor. The waitress was very prompt and polite. We decided to try some sashimi and a couple of rolls since we weren't sure what to expect. The hamachi and salmon sashimi were OK, but they didn't taste quite right. Would probably not order it again and I blame our location in Florida for the lack of quality fish. We also ordered a Mermaid Roll and I think some sort of shrimp and mango roll. Both had good flavor but something in the shrimp roll was apparently supposed to have been tempura fried but all I could taste of it was stale tempura. This also happened in Pensacola, so maybe it's a Florida thing to fry everything that morning that you plan on including in rolls? I've only had a few rolls that had fried items in them in CA and they were all fried fresh and the crunch was still there. So, overall the atmosphere and service were great and the rolls were decent and reasonably priced. However, the sashimi was iffy. Would I go back? Sure, if I just wanted some rolls. I think we'll try one more place before giving up on sushi until we aren't in Florida anymore.

The sushi was good but our waitress forgot our appetizer. Also, when I ordered the sushi, I asked for "nothing spicy" bc I have an extremely low tolerance. She repeated "no spicy" to me and seemed to write it down but my roll came with spicy mayo on it and had to be sent back. The waitress was very unapologetic about her blunders with left me with a sour taste in my mouth. But like I said, the sushi was good. And the presentation was very imaginative!

Small sushi restaurant in southside. Fish was fresh, service was quick, my only compliant would be the the atmosphere... Something about 4x6 pictures taped on the wall above the booth and label maker tape over the menus that just doesn't scream "classy".

For now, can you make that 3.5 stars? The decor is very nice, soothing. It was very pleasant to sit in a clean, well-designed environment. A variety of standard Japanese fare with plenty of vegetarian options to choose from. My friend and I shared some nice appetizers, but it was the main courses that impressed me. I ordered the "Ten Don," a bed of rice topped with a mildly sweet Japanese-style omelet and two large pieces of shrimp tempura. It was a large portion, well-presented, and delicious. Japanese comfort food. My friend had an abundance of Chicken Katsu with freshly made fried rice & devoured most of it. We were also treated to a sample of their house special roll, the Oishii Roll, also delicious. Good service from a genuinely friendly staff that works to insure you'll enjoy your dining experience. I reserve the right to amend this based on future visits. For now, it's a great place to eat.

This place is my favorite sushi place in Jacksonville. I come here at least once a week with my best friend! The staff is friendly and the service is great! I love the shrimp and asparagus roll and salmon avocado roll. They are both the best in town! I have tried a lot of their other rolls and the spicy mango shrimp roll stands out as does the volcano roll. The restaurant has a cool vibe and is always neat and clean!

Great service, great food. I ordered the tuna tataki, mexican roll, miso soup, and green tea ice cream. All of which were fantastic. The chef even prepared a taster sized portion of whitefish dish that was on the house. The decor is a tad simple but for the quality of food, price, and service, Oishii is well worth a visit.

This is the best spot in Jacksonville for the freshest sushi/sashimi! They also make your food look like edible art! If it weren't for the huge portions which is a plus, I'd have to try everything on the menu in the same day! The special sashimi is a definite must have. So is the sashimi dinner, they both come with your choice of clear or miso soup, salad, with either ginger or ranch but who gets ranch at a japanese restaurant? Plus they always ask if you want a side of steamed rice with it! Talk about a lot of food, I've learned to politely pass on the rice as I will never get to it even though it's yummy! Plus the staff is so polite and helpful, if you can't decide what to order or don't know what something is they will always suggest something great and you might get lucky with a dish that's not on the menu! They also have bento boxes that come with more food then at Bento. Theirs comes with soup and salad+ california roll, rice, shumai, 2 pieces of tempura(shrimp/veggie)and your main entree! Everything there is super fresh! Their clear soup is the best I've had anywhere and I'm a Japanese foodie so I know my soup! Theirs just not enough you can say about Oishii to do it justice, you have to experience it for yourself to understand the greatness behind the doors in this piece of heaven.

Came in for lunch on a Wednesday. Agree with Kelly C. This is an above average sushi restaurant, and probably as good as it gets in Jax. I give them 3 1/2 stars. Small place with modern decor. Attentive and accomodating service. Although I was a bit demanding for the types of dishes I was looking for, my waitress always kept a smile on her face and was sincere about me having a good dining experience. The food presentation was very good. The cheff went out of his way with the plating and presentation. I decided to taste a variety of dishes and sashimi cuts. I started with the squid salad. To my surprise, the squid was cooked, dry and tough. This salad is usually done with raw squid. I then had the tartar trio. It was very good. A great variety of flavors. Nicely presented with a raw quail egg on top. Although now a days most of the fish used in nigiri and sashimi are previously frozen, I found theirs to be very fresh in flavor. Not only the sushi grade used is above average, but it is one of the few places were a decent variety of fish is available. Besides the estandard tuna, salmon, white tuna and yellow tail, I had fluke, red snapper, toro and stripe bass, raw squid and salmon roe. Everything was well prepared, with an outstanding presentation. The only dissappointment in this dish was the toro. It was dry and stringy. Although the squid salad was not to my liking and the toro was not acceptable, they could of had the common courtesy of taking these out of the bill. Specially after ordering over $60 worth of lunch for one person. This would of gone a long way and earn them 4 stars. Nonetheless, this is a place worth repeating.

Best sushi in Jacksonville! The staff is very friendly, and the restaurant is clean and comfortable. I've been disappointed with the sushi options (I recently moved here from the North East), but I've finally found an awesome place. I'll definitely be back!

First time here and we loved it! The waitress was really nice and sweet. This place had a great atmosphere, dim lights, modern touches, and really clean. The sushi was amazing! My husband and I are coming here again and agree that this place has some of the best sushi in Jax!

The place is small but the service is AMAZING and the sushi is FANTASTIC. The secret "Florida Amazing Roll" that isn't on the menu is so effing good. Whenever I want sushi in Jacksonville, Oishii is where I will go.

What a hidden gem! We ate at Oishii because the Yelp reviews were good. When we got there, I was surprised that it was so small, but on the inside it was lovely and inviting. My husband had suchi (he LOVED the dynamite roll) and I had steak. They do hibachi, but not at the table in front of you, which is nice because it's more of a quiet, intimate feel. The broccoli was fantastic. The only things I can complain about was that the waitress didn't really check on us after our food came (and we were her only table), and the fried rice was kind of bland. We will definitely be going back!
