Pleasantly surprised by the veggie-based options at The Swamp.

3.5 STARS Pretty much a run of the mill bar that does sandwiches, burgers, and basic pub grub food to go with their liquor that they serve. The staff were friendly and not too busy as it seems like most people usually don't come to these places until college football season and perhaps even college basketball season rolls around. I had the buffalo chicken wrap with sweet potato fries and it was pretty decent. I also got sweet tea refills super quick too so kudos to their hard working staff. Not much of a beer selection but I doubt that they will ever have a high demand for craft brew beers in this part of the state. I also saw a framed jersey of current Warrior David Lee from his Florida playing days. Go Warriors! TVs were everywhere but one of them was obviously busted and blurry but they either didn't notice or care.

Ahh The Swamp. I have spent a lot of time here over the past 14 years. When I was a student at UF, I would frequently lunch at The Swamp. I never really enjoyed the night life here as it was a bit too crazy for my taste, but I have always liked the food and atmosphere especially for a nice lunch and drinks. The service is always good and let's be honest, this is a Gainesville bucket list spot. As for the food my favorite thing to get is the buffalo tender wrap with fries. The nachos and the sweet potato fries are also noteworthy. The drinks are inexpensive and you have a great view of UF across the street. I am a fan of The Swamp and intend to come here to dine for many years to come on my trips to Gainesville!

Rowdy frat boy atmosphere. I only had the chips and queso which was okay, the rest of the menu was just quick bar food. Would be fun on game day but def not a place to enjoy a nice quiet dinner. Good service though.

It doesn't matter whether it's game day, students are back, summer, whatever.....they seem to get overwhelmed very easy. Service is horrible and the only reason students go is because of convenience. Food is really nothing special and prices, well it's directly in front of the university......of course they jack the prices up! I wont go back....and neither will any of my group.

I was born and raised in Gville so I've been here many times. Honestly, it's a quick beer grab before the game for me and stops there. They are usually pretty busy and loud so on a nice night I'd sit outside if that's an option. The food has always been mediocre at best to me. We popped in last night because it was dead (spring break) and wanted to grab a beer before the basketball game (GO GATORS!!!). The entire restaurant inside and out was 1/2 full, they had plenty of wait staff and bartenders but the service was still ridiculously slow! To the point of we missed tip off trying to pay our bill (which annoyed me quite a bit). Oh and I suggest if you're going for a quick beer or 2 that you get it by the bottle if you can. If it is the hour of day that you get a glass instead of plastic they never seem to rinse the glasses well so your Stella has a hint of Dawn dish soap taste to it...

I come here more for the environment than the food. The quality of food is so-so, though they have a broad selection and variety of drinks from their bar. I've been coming here since 2004 and a bunch of pretty faces work here but you can tell customer service is not held up to the highest of standards. It's as good as you can expect when college students are serving other college students mostly. If you're looking for a Gainesville staple on your way through town, or a vibrant place before/after a football game, this is your place! They've got plenty of TVs, music, and an outdoor patio with some seating. At night certain days of the week it turns into more of a bar environment but by day, it's a place to which you could take your children. Beware, though, if you have a big stroller or are in a wheelchair, there is no formal ramp up to the restaurant. You have to go up at least a couple stairs. I love eating at The Swamp because it's decked out in Gator swag and I always feel nostalgic coming back here. It's also close to other bars and restaurants in Midtown if you wanted to do some hopping.

They are dog friendly! They had shaded umbrella cover and fans which was nice for a hot day. The brought out water for the dogs which is always welcome. Good food, good service, and a nice atmosphere. I had the salad kale wrap with humus which was delicious!

A friend recommended that I stop in this Gainesville staple while in town. I went for lunch and was thankful for the recommendation. The salmon club was awesome (although the bacon was a little too cooked for me), and the sweet potato fries hit the spot. Washed it down with a Swamp Head IPA. Would definitely go back if I'm in the area.

An average experience overall. Nothing exceptional about the burgers or sandwiches, but the waitresses are friendly and attentive (though I'm sure this gets stretched out when the college students all come rushing in). I can see this being a common pre-game/post-game meal, and it'll get the job done. You'll have a better experience coming on a slow day in the afternoon than right before a game.

Typical college hangout. The server ladies were awesome as they were cute and very much service oriented. It only receives 3 star cause the food was very average. We went in the summer cause I think when the students are back this place would be crazy.

This restaurant is like a landmark in Gainesville or at least for Florida Gator students. Honestly, I do not recommend the food here, but it's a great place to drink! They have a large outdoor patio area where you can sit and with your food and drinks. It's a great place to people watch since it's literally right across the street from the University of Florida and there's many out-of-town folks floating around. This is the place I first met Tim Tebow! You never know who you will meet at this restaurant! They have a full bar and the menu seems like typical bar food. It's a great place to watch a football game if you weren't able to get tickets! It's also very loud most of the time and gets filled up quick. Service is a bit slow but I don't blame the servers because it always gets really busy. The Swamp is located in the middle of Midtown next to Copper Monkey, 101 Cantina, Mochi, Pita Pit, and Designer Greens. If you're from out of town and must check it out, grab a beverage and sit on the patio. There's plenty of food across the street to choose from if you're still hungry.

My favorite place to go when I was attending UF. The swamp hasn't changed much and why should it, great beer selection, friendly people, and decent food. I ordered the gator tail tacos which were delicious, gator was a little tough but cooked well. I wish I lived closer so I could come more but it's fantastic too see UF students still flock here on a daily basis. Go gators!!

I loved the Swamp as a student, so I decided to bring my husband before a basketball game. I'll have to say, though things will be different from being a young student to years later, I was a bit disappointed by how different our experience was. Though the restaurant was relatively empty, we got seated on the second floor, so we felt that we were the uncool kids (though we imagine may also be because we aren't young college students anymore and I'm pregnant.) The food was just okay also. It did still appear fun to go drinking or during football season, but not gonna go back otherwise.

Fun day spot and does get crowded with the post Gators football game crowd. Good for beer and drinks. Their buffalo chicken wrap is really good and what I usually get and what most people talk about.

I come to Gainesville for work with the university every other year, and the swamp is definitely my preferred lunch spot. I like to go with the specials - yesterday was the Argentinian steak sandwich with a great chimichurri sauce. Always go with the sweet potato fries; theirs seem to complement just about any sandwich. Lunch hour is also rarely overwhelmed so the service is good and the staff are very pleasant.

I'm a student at the University, so I've been to the Swamp on numerous occasions. There are definitely pros and cons so I'll cover them both. The restaurant is right across the street from campus and has a great casual, college atmosphere. Parking is tricky, there is no designated lot so you have to find a spot on the streets or park on campus and walk. I've never had a problem with the service, even when it's been packed or I've been with a big group. The waitresses are college girls who work very hard and are very friendly. The food is where things can get tricky. It really depends on what you order. Sometimes the portions are small (the quesadillas) and sometimes the taste is less than stellar. Things I can recommend are the sandwiches and the sweet potato fries. Delectable. All in all a decent, pretty inexpensive restaurant. After hours it turns into a place to drink and that's really its strong suit.

Maybe it was because it was pouring rain and being inside of a port-a-potty would have been preferable to being outside. Maybe it was because I was on a hilarious date... But despite being a native of Tallahassee and a die-hard 'Nole, feeling as if I was cheating on my Alma Mater dining at an enemy establishment, I had so much fun at this place! First of all, any time it is raining they have $1 beer specials (that day it was Rolling Rock, I'm not sure if that changes) and $2 something-liquor-drinks. I can't remember what it was but I want to say some sort of a shooter. That in and of itself makes me love that place because let's face it.. when is it NOT raining in Florida during the summer? Lesbihonest. Chicken quesadilla was mediocre but whatever, it's bar food, I don't expect 5 star cuisine from a bar. I got exactly what I would expect. Would go back again. Especially if it's raining. In fact any time it's raining I'll probably suggest this place.

Decided to have dinner here with some friends, since most of the students are gone and the patio wasn't crowded. The service was decidedly improved from previous visits, but that could have been from the place not being packed. I had the pork quesadilla with sweet potato fries. The pork was tender, but a little greasy. Apparently a quesadilla means two slices of a standard sized quesadilla (smallest I've ever had); it was supposed to come with pineapple salsa, which apparently is just 2 chunks of pineapple (not exaggerating). The sweet potato fries are pretty good, but they don't offer a dipping sauce with it, and we had to request one. I also had one of their specialty drinks, which supposedly had 2-3 shots of alcohol in it, but I barely felt anything after drinking it. The drink itself was tasty. Meh.

Very good service, waitresses are super sweet!! The burger very good and the teriyaki steak skewers very good. Club sandwich not good and fries not too good. Will definetely go back!!

Gator tacos were over-fried, fish was way over-cooked, wings had only a little bit of sauce, but artichoke dip was good. Overall the food was decent at best, but most likely due to the crazy rush of business that we were caught up in while eating here. Our waitress clearly had little experience handling a rush, and though she was in the weeds after being sat a handful of tables at once (fault of the hosts that were seating her section) our order wasn't taken for 30 minutes. All the food and drinks were rung in the computer at one time, so no drinks for nearly an hour of sitting, not even a water, and appetizers came out with the entrees. Tip for the waitress or the owner/manager if they read their reviews: take a table's order, put it in the system, then move to the next table. Your host staff is ridiculous for sitting the poor waitress with so many tables at once - patrons will feel better about waiting FOR a table than waiting AT the table! Two tables next to us were both cleared and then sat after we had already been waiting, and they both received and finished their drinks and appetizers before we even got a water dropped at our table. 30 minutes before our order was taken. 45 minutes before a drink came, and the bartender walked it upstairs. 55 minutes before waters were dropped. 1 hr 5 minutes before food arrived Waitress was sweet, but she was overloaded by the host staff.

Went to Gainesville and had some time to kill before a 9PM tip for the Gators. This place has tons of Gators memorabilia signed all over the walls. I can only imagine how busy it gets on game days. After all when I was there this past Tuesday, the students were all on break. Food and service was excellent. We ordered the pork quesadillas and the mahi-mahi sandwich. Both were excellent and good sized portions. Sydney was an excellent waitress. I love it when I don't have to say anything for someone to know that I need my drink filled. The view from the 2nd floor deck is beautiful. I will definitely be back in the future. Go Gators!

If you are like me, you likely don't associate the word "swamp" with fresh, tasty, and creative food. In this particular circumstance, you and I would both be correct! On the other hand, if you rent out the top portion of this establishment for a casual get together, fun can be had! The liquor will flow and the recently fried food fresh from the freezer will do what it needs to do... Soak up liquor so you can have more! Just set your expectations appropriately, drink heavily, and life is good.

Apparently, this place is a UF staple. I'm not sure I get it. My group ate outside, had a bunch of quesadillas and iced tea, paid our $15/person and left. The location is good, but everything else is forgettable. At least they had a water bowl for the dog.

If you come to Gainesville, you need to stop here for some sweet potato fries. They are the best I have had.

  • Kara P.

I would just like to start by saying how nice and friendly the waitresses were. Secondly, the queso was AMAZING! The chips we're hot and fresh as was the queso. I only wish the salsa had been spicier. I ordered the curry chicken salad sandwich with a side if the sweet potatoes fries. The sweet pathos toe fries were delicious, reminiscent of my favorite place to get them; the Mountain Shack in Morressville VT. The chicken salad was not the best. The chicken was dry, as if left over chicken was used. There was absolutely no curry flavor noticeable. The bread was rather tasteless as well. I will say my coach and teammates burgers looked and smelled phenomenal. The fish my teammates orders looked fresh and flaky and perfect. I wish I had gotten that instead, next time indefinitely will get that or the pork quesadilla, another teammate got this and they enjoyed it very much.

I used to go to college at UF, so I came back for some nostalgia. I remembered this place being one of the best places to hang out, especially on game days. The restaurant itself is really cute-its in a large old home with porch and plenty of outdoor seating, right across from the stadium. It was fun just to be back and sit outside. There was no music outside, but we did get to hear some hilariously stupid conversations around us from the day drinkers that involved a lot of "duuuude" and "Brooo". The food was ok- I never remembered it being great to begin with...so I wasn't surprised. Beer selection was decent. I ordered the BBQ pork Hawaiian tacos and they were actually pretty good- juicy and good flavor. My fiance got the gator tacos- they left something to be desired. The appetizer also was just average- fried sprouts. They were doused in a clumsy green chilie....and none of the flavors really went together. Bottom line: go for the ambiance and get drunk but don't expect much from the food.

The Swamp is the perfect place to be before, or after, a University of Florida sporting event-especially if the weather is nice and you are seated outdoors overlooking University Avenue. The food is casual American bistro and in all the times I have eaten here, over quite a few years, I have never had a bad meal here. I really go here more for the atmosphere than the food, if I can't get a good seat overlooking University Avenue, or it is far too crowded, there are a lot of other places nearby that are fun and have good food too. I have eaten on their back porch and if this is what they offer you and you want to see all the action on a game day leave and find another place. For me, the Swamp is all about good food in a fun atmosphere.

Love, love, love this place. Especially if you are a Gator fan. It is filled up with great memorabilia and pics of The Gators. The food is awesome and a great way to start your tailgating off before a game. If you don't live in Gainesville and go to a game it is a must in places to eat.

Warning! Warning! Tourist Trap! "...but it's so cute outside." Save yourself. This place has a great location Midtown and with a name like "the Swamp" it is bound to attract some people. Servers are really nice but easily overwhelmed. Beer selection is lack-luster, and servers don't know an IPA from a Porter. Their food tastes precooked. Scratch that. Its definitely precooked. I had the fish tacos due to the outstanding reviews. It had no taste. My rice was minute rice. I ate the beans, but that is just because I am from south of the border. Not worth the $13. My friend has the salmon sandwich which was "fishy." A tall tale sign they don't turn their fish very often. Gross. Never again.

As an out-of-towner from Missouri *cue "WELCOME TO THE SEC" jokes here*, we wandered around campus like a lot of lost puppies asking everyone where we should go for dinner. 85% of people referred us to this place. The other 15% of people were freshmen who said "uhhhh I don't really know.. I just eat on campus..." So, we came here. Friday night at 5:15 and this place was already booming. We had to wait a while, but there were a lot of us. The servers and staff were really kind. The atmosphere of the entire place is pretty cool -- we especially liked the open patio with the twinkle lights. We don't have too much stuff like that in Missouri because it gets so effing cold. The food was overpriced (by at least double), but it wasn't BAD. Nothing spectacular, though. We tried a lot of their drinks and our favorite was definitely the lady gator! Overall, we were happy we decided t come here. Definitely was in the heart of the downtown (they call it midtown) scene of Gainesville and was RIGHT next to campus. Really showed us what the U of F game weekend atmosphere was all about!

During my last visit, my friends and I had terrible service. The excuse our waitress gave us: "I have other tables." ...really? You mean you don't just have one table? You're a server at restaurant and you have multiple tables? Wow... I don't come here often, but at least once a semester my friends will inevitably end up here. I'm going to try my hardest to resist next time....

I really liked the swamp. The food was great and so was the service. I had the mahi mahi sandwich with peach mango salsa and a side of steamed veggies. Generous portions, fresh selections and fair prices. We sat outside, great atmosphere. But I would maybe think twice before I brought my parents to the swamp. I'm 29 and felt a little old, as well as over dressed, compared the crowd and waitress staff but oh well! It is a college town! Got go with the flow:)

The wife and I recently made a trip over to Gainesville to check out a Gators basketball game, and we decided to stop into The Swamp to grab some lunch and booze if up before heading into the arena. The place was packed- mostly with folks doing the exact same thing we were, but surprisingly we only had to wait about 15 minutes to grab a table. We grabbed a couple of beers at the bar (Samuel Adams on tap- SCORE!) and were seated soon after. The motif is obviously catered to The University of Florida Gators. Autographed jerseys, helmets, basketballs, etc were all over the walls from past and present Gator stars. This was a pretty cool house transformed into a bustling bar / restaurant for the college kids and their families- two stories, plenty of patio space, a good size bar- this is definitely a chill place to grab drinks and food, although I imagine that during peak hours this place is a MADHOUSE filled with drunken college kids, but that's what you do at college, right? Service was great- our waitress was attentive, got our orders correct, and kept the drinks flowing. The food was good, as well. Nothing overly spectacular, but it was fresh, hot, and filling. I ordered a cheeseburger with bacon and BBQ sauce. It was cooked right- juicy and hot, and the toppings were delicious. The french fries were fried up and seasoned just right- I annihilated my plate. Couple that with some ice cold Sam Adams drafts, and I left a happy camper. Overall- I enjoyed my stop here. The wait wasn't too long, the service was great, food was good, and it definitely got our day started right and got us revved up for some Gator basketball. Would recommend during slower hours- this might be an awesome place before / after Gator football / basketball games, but you'd better be prepared to WAIT. Other than that, this place is pretty cool. Go Gators!

Typical Gainesville: low bar, no attempt to be better than mediocre. No extra touch to anything. "Fresh lime" margarita was filled with fillers: tasted like koolaid and tequila. Tempeh quesadilla (pretty hard to do poorly) tasted liked overcooked chewy dog food and cheese. All wines from one mediocre vintner. Their chips and salsa are disgusting; maybe they buy bulk chips from BigLots or Dollar Store??? I know they can fill the place with drunk students, but they are adjacent to UF, teeming with faculty, and you pretty much are throwing away a giant market.

Third time here, I was accidentally sat with a food menu and subsequently told the kitchen was closed. No big deal... but to make it up to me, the house bought my beer and slung me some free sweet potato free. Very nice gesture; I'll be back for a fourth, fifth, sixth time. The Swamp's becoming my home away from home while in Gainesville on extended business.

We've been here twice, and the only reason I went back is because we had a gift card to use up. First time I got a virgin margarita (which was decent) and split an antipasti plate and some chicken tenders with some friends. They were your run-of-the-mill chicken tenders and the antipasti hit the spot but it was kinda bland and nothing like you'd get at an actual Italian place. Second time my husband and I split a sandwich (turkey spinach artichoke panini or something) with rice and beans as the side along with their weekly special, baked goat cheese. The portions were SO SMALL. It was a $25 with tip (which we wanted to skimp on, but didn't) for those two items and two waters. The goat cheese plate was literally a ball of goat cheese the size of a golf ball, 5 of the thinnest apple slices I've ever seen, a dozen craisins, and wimpy bread, each piece the size of a dinner knife blade that wasn't even good bread. The sandwich's flavor was odd and for a panini it was on the oily side. The best thing was the side of rice and beans which even then was mediocre at best. We ate everything because the portions were so small but at like $10 per thing, we weren't about to get anything else! Not to mention the service was really slow...it was a Thursday night and the outside was about half full but inside wasn't, and yet somehow the whole process took forever. I can see how the location is pretty darn good and the atmosphere is definitely suited for Gainesville (though we don't prefer it)...the drinks may be good, I wouldn't know, but the food was awful. I am so glad we used up the gift card because we wouldn't eat there again even if we got another gift card.

Supposedly this is one of the top 10 game day bars in the nation. It's located on campus, Go Gators!. We sat outside and enjoyed cocktails, appetizers, and wings. I don't recall the flavors of the wings but they were very good. The alligator tail was only so-so and the fruity cocktails were awesome. It was an expensive afternoon for three but very enjoyable.

What happened to this place?? I took a group here to experience the 'legendary' Swamp restaurant for a home game weekend Sunday brunch. What a MISTAKE. The menu was a 'gameday weekend' menu, which meant it was 3/4 alcoholic drinks and about 10 food choices. Fine. A limited menu of their best food should make for a quick and delicious meal. Not so. ALL food was OVERPRICED ($8 for a plain bagel with two slices of bacon, a slice of cheese, and an egg on it with grits on the side). Took about about 50 minutes for the food to arrive, and when it did it was cold and wrong. At our party of five, a sandwich came without avocado, a bacon egg and cheese sandwich came WITHOUT THE MEAT, and the other orders came out cold and sad. The bloody marys our table ordered were pathetic. They lacked even the basic celery stick which the menu stated would come in them. The first round did have a skewer with olives on it, but this was mysteriously gone in the second round. The 'best part' about it was the 'homemade' mix the menu touted. What a lie. The bloody mary mix was nothing more than Zing Zangs, which can be found on the bottom shelf of any Publix. I will not be returning, and I am embarrassed I took my out of town guests to this crappy 'Gainesville staple.'

Food is just A ok, service is shotty, location is great, getting a table on the lawn is challenging, drinks aren't the cheapest and it doesnt get any more painfully greek than this place. A ok for alumni to drink a few, munch on some apps and dip on out. dusk is best.

Generally slow service, so-so food and relatively expensive drinks. But it is right across the the street from the stadium and the game day football atmosphere is outstanding. This place could be a gold mine if they stepped up the food and service a few notches.

This review is specifically for those families visiting the campus for a tour...it might be tempting, but DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY HERE. I guess if it is game day, this place must be hopping considering the location and all of the memorabilia...alumni probably also enjoy a visit when back on campus. But for those visiting the campus for the day (like I was with my son yesterday), it was an expensive mistake which took away from our desire to come back to evaluate the school any further. Our waitress was probably the most inattentive one we've ever experienced....ever. Our sodas were in these glasses that were maybe 10 ounces (they're probably bigger, but they are the smallest we've ever seen). She unfortunately never came back to check on them (or us) until I begged for the bill. The food, which took forever to come out was a disaster. I won't go into details, but for what we paid they should really be embarrassed. It's a shame...before our visit I read some reviews and tried to find a place that would help create a nice Gator experience. Pass on this one.

Good place for a quick bite to eat. Nothing too special about anything on the menu in my opinion. Everything is just, o.k. However, the lawn is a great place to meet up with friends for some beer before a weekend of the Gators stomping face in Ben Hill Griffin.

Expectations were exceeded with the food and experience we had at The Swamp. Perfect place for lunch during first trip to Gainesville and University of Florida. Gator spirit definitely strong at The Swamp. Great outdoor seating for lunch on a sunny afternoon. The tempeh quesadilla and fresh salad were fantastic. Service was good. Parking was a challenge, but it was worth it.

Sorry yal, I know the Swamp has been around forever but this place is meeehh. Yea, it's historic, sits on a great location, and gets packed all the time, but walk inside guys and gals and you'll realize, people come here to drink and nothing else. The food here is standard or mediocre, so don't have high expectations, maybe you'll have a more pleasant experience if you do. We ordered the conch fritters and I didn't realize I ordered fried dough with 2 pieces of conch. You'd think you can't go wrong with chicken wings, but the wings were dry! wth? Not all was bad, my friends ordered the Nacho grande and it was a huge platter of nachos and looked good enough, even though there wasn't enough topping for the amount of chips they got. However, the waitress was nice enough to get them some more. Come here for the experience if you're a freshmen or a visitor to town, but don't let this define your dining experience in G-ville. There's plenty of tasty local eateries.

I'm giving an extra star for the nostalgia factor I feel whenever I'm in town and eat at the Swamp. I spent many an afternoon after class or on a Sunday Funday in Swamp's front lawn, drinking cheap beer and people watching right across the street from the UF campus, and when I was back last week it felt like not a day had passed. The food is nothing special, and at $7 a pitcher, the Coors Light isn't nearly as cheap as you can find elsewhere nearby, but whatever this place lacks in dining quality it makes up for with atmosphere. The front lawn can't be beat for day drinking and the inside has tons of tv's to watch your favorite Gator sporting event. I do think the wings are completely solid and am also a fan of the gator tail, sweet potato fries, and fish tacos. The Swamp does get, shall we say, 'lively' after dark, and does tend to be a bit of a frat/sorority scene, so avoid it late night if that isn't your cup of tea. I wouldn't expect you to get it if you're not a Gator (and if you're not, why are you visiting Gainesville anyway?). This isn't fine dining and the fanciest cocktail you're going to find is the always delicious swamparita (hint: its a margarita named creatively for the famous football stadium a quarter mile down the road). But for location, atmosphere, and a guaranteed good time, the Swamp will always be one of my favorites.

Visit Date: 03.23.2010 This is place is just as much an institution as The University of Florida is in Gainesville. It's situated at a nice location right across the northern edge of campus, with decent food, as the food was generally ordinary. I had the gator tail po' boy sandwich which was the special of the day at a discounted price. Also a good place to just kick back and relax with some beer.

Most Overrated place in Gainesville I hear people outside the town and people all over ESPN say "You should go to the Swamp Restaurant when in Gainesville". It even made a top 100 list (Best bars in college towns). It's located right at the corner of University Ave and 17th St. I will admit that it has one of the best locations for a restaurant. The location is prime and the ambiance is great. You can sit inside or outside on their patio and just "people-watch". Everybody comes here for lunch...but I don't really know why. As far as the restaurant goes, you can find much better food at much better prices. Burgers are $9 without toppings. This would be ok if they actually tasted like some of the best burgers. Don't get me wrong...they're not bad. They're just not worth the price.I had the Filet Sandwich which wasn't bad, but was around $15. The meat was a little dry but it tasted fine. The bread wasn't that great. They should probably get better rolls. They do have some interesting items on the menu like Lobster Rolls and Gator Tail. Haven't tried these items but not sure I'll be able to. The Swamp is pretty much a haven for the typical 'frat" guy/girl.

Horrendous service. Food took 45 minutes. Zero communication until we asked why the food was taking so long. Apparently they ran out of ingredients and has to "run across the street." No refills from waitress. Quesadilla was more like half-a-quesadilla. Incredibly small serving size. A quesadilla is made from a full tortilla, not a half. Manager and waitress both acted like I was insane.

I've been here many times and I'm consistently satisfied. Standard American fare with sandwiches, burgers, paninis, salads, etc. A few stand-out menu items which are awesome are the Fried Green Tomato BLT, the Mango Mahi Sandwich, and the Turkey Artichoke Panini, which are always good. Beer specials are pretty good when they're happening. I think it was $5.00 for a bucket of 5 beers on Mondays. Also, they have a special on buffalo wings on Mondays starting at 8, which makes for a good time. The wings aren't anything to write home about, but they're cheap. If you want this, go early and make sure you order ASAP because after 8 on Mondays, this place gets PACKED. At night, this place turns into a frat/sorority event, so if that isn't your scene, I'd avoid it. I'm sure this place is great on gameday Saturdays, but I do know that the prices SKYROCKET on these days, so be prepared for $5.00 Bud Lights. Consistently good food at good prices in a fantastic location! I highly recommend it for lunch, happy hour, or dinner.

I wouldn't come here to had lunch everyday but its a good place to take visitors. Mainly it rocks if you want that Gainesville Swamp feel. I love sitting on the patio and looking out at UF. People watching rocks. I wasn't impressed with the food. They did have gator tail so that's a plus. The restaurant was somewhat clean but it's an old house feel to it. You must like sitting outside to eat here cause when they open the windows that are garage doors it's almost like sitting outside.

Are you a popped-collar frat boy that tries to get your bros to look at your junk (cuz, you know, it's HI-LAR-IOUS)? Are you a sorority girl that puts on makeup to go to bed? Do you aspire to one day form your own Dave Matthews cover band? Do you love puca shell necklaces? Are 90% of your lectures online? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you will LOVE The Swamp. Why are you still reading this?! Go! Make sure you get a frosty pitcher of paler-than-piss lager with a bag o' ice floatin' in it!

There is no doubt that Swamp is a happening place. As a nighttime social destination, it is legendary. However, it has it's flaws which have gotten worse in recent years. As a restaurant these flaws include notoriously bad service, extremely high prices for mediocre food, and a limited menu that pretends to be much more than the glorified bar food it is. As a nightlife destination, high cover charges (even when the place is empty), high drink prices, over crowded bars, and even worse service plagues The Swamp. With so much competition having better food, better service, and much better prices, The Swamp's self aggrandizing attitude has made it a no-go for some of its most loyal patrons of the past.

Other college towns have real "institution" restaurants, we get stuck with The Swamp. I don't care how much Gator football bric-a-brac they have or how pretty they think their waitresses are, at best this is a pale imitation of what a good college sports bar/restaurant ought to be. Overpriced, bland, unimaginative food, poor service, and even the drink specials aren't that special. As others have noted, they get by on their location and the fact some Gator fans will dumbly gravitate to anything orange and blue, no matter how poorly-done it is. I am not one of those fans though.

The Swamp is honestly a great place to go in Gainesville. The food is consistently good, the service is always attentive and you can eat here for under $15. Oh, and the location is super convenient (although parking can suck). It's that place you bring your parents to, but also the bar you go to on the weekends. I haven't had a chance to eat outside yet, but it looks really nice.

Very cool atmosphere and a great place to get a beer and hang. Definitely the college crowd type of bar. If you're more seasoned, you might want to head to a different bar. I HEARD that this establishment was voted best bar for colleges in Playboy magazine. ;)

I recommend the Swamp restaurant to any out of town lunchers. It is such a fantastic place to sit outside and watch the students shuffle to class. Its even more fun when they look longlingly at your full pitcher of beer and then glance sadly back at their textbooks in hand. The menu offers standard fare like burgers, club sandwiches, spinach dip and the like. There are a few standout stars on the menu like the local tempeh gyro and the freshman 15 burger topped with a fried egg. But the Swamp is not about the food, or the sub par service, it is about the atmosphere and the people watching. The Swamp is also great for game days and late nights. There are always tons of students mingling, and there is always an overwhelming feeling of fun.

I visited The Swamp for the first time yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Admittedly I arrived at 11:45 so I did not have to deal with the evening crowd--or even the lunch crowd--but I am rating the experience and not on problems that I might have encountered later in the day. My server was efficient and friendly and brought my drink, app and entree in timely fashion. I started with a hummus platter. The hummus was a bit too thick but it was tasty nonetheless. Served with flatbread and assorted fresh fruit, my only suggestions to the kitchen are to serve green apples before they brown and to add tahini to the hummus. I enjoyed an excellent grilled tilapia salad for my entree. The tilapia was quite fresh (a surprise to me!), The vegetables were crisp and the goat cheese was top notch. On the whole a tasty meal. While I would not fight a crowd to get into The Swamp (or anywhere), if I can easily get a table I will happily return on future visits.

If you are going to Swamp to eat before 7pm, you'll probably enjoy yourself. The food will be pretty tasty, there won't be too much of a (douchey) crowd and your server will be decent. If you're going to the Swamp to drink... Good luck with that.. This used to be the spot to grab $5 buckets to start the night.. I don't know what happened.. Either I got old or less tolerant of "greek life".. Basically, it gets super crowded with the sorority/frat crowd EARLY and almost impossible to move. For some reason I can deal with this when I'm not surrounded by croakies, the MAC forcefield , 21 signs, and boat shoes... The drinks are pricier than any other midtown bar. Go here to eat, not drink.... Unlesssss you're into that sort of thing :)

  • Bethany M.

The service is garbage. The servers are college girls and apparently think they are cute enough (they're not) that they can slide on that. You'll wait too long and get nothing for it. The menu is average at best. Same for the beer selection. BUT... It's across the street from campus and it's one of the few long-standing University Ave establishments. They have pretty good specials ($4 Coors Light and Miller Light pitchers from 2-4 M-F, for one). Plus, two stories with tables AND a decent patio. So, as long as I'm coming to Gainesville, I'm in.

This is a Gainesville game day institution! Translation: They stopped trying years ago. Let's face it, the place gets by on beer sales and location. The food is meh. Oh, and here's my favorite feature: The Game Day special menu. ----Here's what I imagine on this issue---- Owner to Manager: "Here's the concept - we offer fewer items and jack up the prices to make it way easier on Swamp employees to increase profit margins on drunks who don't give a crap about the food anyway! Woohoo! Awesome idea!" *sigh* The sweet potato fries are good. The burgers average. There is nothing really terrible about the place - the main selling point is the real estate. Brilliant example of their customer commitment: No pickles in the kitchen. What's that you say? When pressed on adding pickle to the over priced Swamp Cuban, OR for pickle to go with my burger - I was informed that they simply do not keep pickles in the onsite kitchen. The cubans are "made across the street" and the owner doesn't seem to like the idea of actually providing a basic condiment to customers. Me: "So how about you send someone across the street to get me some" Apathetic College Twit: *blank stare* *nervous laugh* "Um... let me ask the manager" *runs off, never to return until the check was presented* Yeah, way to take it to the next level of "we really don't give a crap what you want, this is what we offer" And what they offer is mostly fried food service dreck. Great for drunks, not so great for anyone that wants a good meal. Ya know, now that I have written this whole review out, I'm gonna have to drop them from 2 stars to one. That pickle thing really frosts my shorts.

Well, I have only been once (and it was after I graduated) but my experience was very good! We sat outside on the big patio. The weather in Gainesville was beautiful, and the twinkling Christmas lights in the trees were a nice touch. My meal (the mahi mahi sandwich with mango chutney and a side of sweet potato fries) tasted amazing! I can't imagine very many people being disappointed with the food. I would therefore disregard most of the negative reviews--unless you will similarly feel offended and insecure in a place that is "collegey," with an emphasis on football, school spirit, and a slightly "frat-tastic" clientele. In that case I recommend you skip the Swamp and head straight to Krishna lunch, you hippie! :]

    (5)
  • Anna W.

super over priced. We stopped here for lunch and I was disappointed. I feel like this is where you go if you're in a sorority and want to feel like you're hardass by going to a sports bar for your Sunday brunch. feels very waspy. I spent too much money during vacation so I just wanted something cheap. I ended up ordering a side of beans and rice for lunch because that's all I could afford. The decorations are really neat but in the end I was turned off by the servers' muffin tops hanging out over their shorts and how expensive the food was.

  • Amy Z.

Food was excellent, but a little pricey for a college town. Ambience was great...typical college town restaurant but with tons of outside seating. March Madness games were on with UF playing so the crowd was rowdy, but I liked it. I got the Freshman 15 burger...it was huge and very tasty. I thought the nacho chips were adorable in blue & orange. Definitely the quintessential UF place to eat. Our service was terrible that day, and the upstairs wasn't particularly busy, so that's why it only gets 3 stars.

I can't bash this place: I should, but I can't. It is a fine, collegiate institution. Certain institutions are set up to be proving grounds. This is one such place. Really, it caters to a crowd that is not my scene and so fine, I'll let it be. As an alumnus, I admit, I'll stop in now and then, but it's still there to be avoided. I am being fair to give it a three. If you are visiting Gainesville, and have never been before, you can't go wrong visiting the Swamp; value judgments aside, it is a fine institution, for those within the institution. For anyone else, it tends to get a bit boring going to places like this.

Came here for dinner with a group of five, late at night around 10:30pm. The food here is average at best. Our table ordered wings ("Swamp Special"), Conch Fritters, and the "Macho Nachos." The conch fritters were disappointing. Food seemed overpriced, especially for a place catering to the college crowd. This restaurant/bar is very loud. Seems to be frequented mostly by the UF fraternity/sorority scene.

    (2)
  • Brandon D.

Great location. Good, albeit overpriced, food and drinks. I don't think its actually the best sports bar in the country as ranked by Playboy- too many annoying frat people- but still really good. The outside patio is awesome.

I always recommend the swamp for new comers to Gainesville, as it's a bit of a touristy must-do. The food is alright, they have good paninis. My friends and I come almost weekly for happy hour for the cheap pitchers and outdoor seating. However, every time I go, the service is bad and exclusively female (isn't that kind of thing not allowed?). I got the turkey artichoke panini; it was good but they forgot I said no tomatoes. My boyfriend got a vegeatarian wrap, but wanted turkey added. They forgot the turkey. After they brought it back, it was all turkey and almost no vegetables. The food is WAY over priced. Burgers are $10-15. Parking is a nightmare. I try not to eat the food there anymore. However, I do keep returning for happy hour because it is conveniently located and the cheap pitchers or $5 doubles. We mostly go out of habit. At night it becomes a "bar," aka greek life fest and $5 cover charge (ridiculous). It will be packed with students. Also on a friday of a home game for UF, try to avoid it (and midtown) all together.

  • Brad A.

This place is definitely one where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. What do I mean by that? Well, the food is fine but nothing special, the drinks aren't cheap compared to the other bars/restaurants in Midtown (although some of the specials are pretty good), and there is almost always a wait to get in. But still, something about this place kept me coming back for more. Maybe it was the awesome location right across from UF, maybe it was sitting out on the front lawn people watching, maybe it was the atmosphere on gamedays, the craziness of Monday nights, all the UF and Gator memorabilia all over the place (unfortunately I think the Teddy Dupay jersey is gone now), or maybe its just the fact that there's not too many places I can order ahi tuna and wash it down with a pitcher of Natty Lite while watching drunk sorority girls check things like "make out with a stranger" off their birthday signs. The bottom line is this: The Swamp is a UF and Gainesville institution and definitely worth going to, especially if you can get in during a football weekend.

Won't go back again. A group a guys were shouting racial slurs at a few girls that walked in and the staff refused to eject the boys from the bar, stating that they were "regulars". The situation was unacceptable and we won't return.

  • Nico S.

The Swamp used to be one of my favorite spots to go and eat with a crowd on a Saturday afternoon back in the day. I had tried the buffalo chicken wrap, their burger, and the seared ahi tuna, which were all very tasty. It seems, however, that their menu has gotten slimmer, and their prices have gone up. I remember spending around $20 before tip, now I end up closer to $30. The quality of food has become pretty inconsistent, and the drinks are way too expensive. I'd say it's a hit-or-miss.

Synonymous with Gainesville and the Gator games in the fall. The food is fine,(mediocre to good) but really do you come here for the food? No, you come here to get absolutely trashed during football games. Back when I was in school here you could run across the street during halftime and down a shot (or two, depending on how good you were) and run back to your seat before the second half started with a fresh buzz on. The best memories of this restaurant however were the Wednesday nights when Ken&Andrew would play an acoustic set - these boys were part of a band called Sister Hazel that ended up doing quite well in the music biz. Ahhhh, sitting on the porch downing Morgan/Cokes listening to top-notch sounds on a hot summer night when you knew you had class at 9AM the next morning is the true college experience. If you are in town for a game this is a definite must-stop by and do a shot (or two, for me)

For an afternoon at a college town 15 years after graduation, this place was awesome. Good beer, good finger food (don't expect gourmet) and friendly waitresses. But don't expect more than that. The Swamp is a typical college bar with a great name.

Appropriately named "The Swamp" due to its close proximity to the actual stadium it's named after, this is a very popular restaurant. It is perfectly located on University Ave directly across from the UF campus and easy to walk to from campus. There is limited parking here, so beware if you decide to drive, especially at a busy time. It has American style food - mostly burgers, sandwiches, and wraps as well as some additional offerings such as fish and quesadillas, etc. It's good, but nothing super special. They also offer their own mixed drinks - which too, are a little pricy. My favorite is the turkey artichoke panini with sweet potato fries. Sweet potato fries are very good here, I highly recommend them! Prices are a little high. Be prepared to wait to seat and get your food - especially if you have a large party. There is indoor and outdoor seating - which is very nice when it's a good weather day. Definitely get a UF vibe from the entire restaurant and decor. It is a fun place to check out during your time in Gainesville, but there are better places out there. Good place to go to party with other Gator fans before and after games or to go to watch a game.

I've only been here once, so I can't vouch for consistency. When we went it was very crowded and there was a reserved party upstairs so we had to sit downstairs where the tvs were loud and music was playing simultaneously. I like that it is quite literally right across the street from (at least one edge of) UF, and the food that I ordered was good and everyone else liked theirs, too. However, the waitress got our order wrong and we had to wait even longer for our food.

What would college life be like at UF without the Swamp is the question. This place defines the University of Florida. Located directly across the street from campus, this restaurant is a VERY popular hang out, lunch spot, dinner, and drinking spot. If you are in a fraternity or sorority, Monday night here is WHERE you are if you are out at all. The restaurant does tend to bring in a preppier crowd. It is perfect for Family that comes to town and is highly recommended for those visiting the University of Florida. They have a great front porch area and back upper deck area outside. The inside is covered in Gator paraphernalia and I LOVE IT LIKE THAT! They have really good sandwiches and I love their sweet potato fries with ranch dressing. YUM! They have great drink specials at night time, like $5 doubles of Three Olives Vodka and beer specials. Pitchers of Blue Moon are really popular here too. And, nothing is better than the Spinach Artichoke Dip here during a night of heavy drinking.... Love this place and miss it A LOT! Wish we had something like it in Orlando.

  • Carolyn W.

This is exactly what you would expect of a place right across from UF. Gator sports posters everywhere and overflowing with students. It isn't famous for its great food so don't expect a gourmet meal. I personally like going there with friends at night but we make sure to be in before 10 when they start charging cover. Great place for drinking but the music is very loud. Not the best service either. But for a UF student, going there is a definite must at least once before graduation.

  • Liz R.

The swamp is full of frat boys and spoiled sorority girls. I would put up with this if the food was actually good. I think the head chef must have been a fired TGIFridays line cook. The food is way overpriced for what you get, not to mention BLAND. There was no thought put into this menu. Gainesville has much better restaurants to offer! It's embarassing to bring visitors there.

The crowd is full of d-bags, it's very true, but it's actually very good food. Surprising, I know. The service is terrible and the other patrons are super annoying, buuuuut at the end of the day, the food is really good, and that's why I would go back.

  • Bob L.

I'm continually shocked by how popular the Swamp Restaurant is. It can't be on account of the quality or price of the food: rarely is there better example of overpriced food. It's not bad food by any stretch, just uninspired and unimpressive and not worth the price. Nor can it be due to the promptness of service: prepare to wait for the wait-staff. Nor can it be due to the occasional live music consisting of covers of popular rock songs. I suspect that much of the restaurant's appeal stems from the buxom waitresses, the relatively inexpensive beer, the pleasant inside and outside ambiance, the large television (good for watching the game), and certainly its proximity to campus. The Swamp might be good for enjoying the game, the beer, and the eye-candy with friends, but I personally find it not worth the price of an entree.

  • Kristin G.

I'm giving this 2 stars because I've only been here on wing night so I won't judge too harshly. The wings are nice and meaty but they don't have a huge variety of flavors to choose from which sucks. We were sat at a high top with no stools so 2 of the people in my party had to sit in regular sized chairs which made our dinner a little odd. When we first came here we were told the wings were .35 cents but come to find out they raised the price to .50 cents per wing so it's a little bit pricier than some other places in the area. Overall good wings but not so good service. Hopefully next time I'll have a better review to give.

  • Paul D.

Great drink specials, generally OK food, good service, and outstanding location. The food is overpriced unless you are taking advantage of one of the drink specials. I've never had a bad meal here, but most have been average, perhaps the best I have had have been a fresh fish sandwich and the apple pie.

  • Curtis D.

This place is classic Gainesville. It does cater to a more "Fraternity/Sorority" type but any type of person is welcome to sample its delicious menu. And nothing beats a Friday afternoon sitting on the Front Lawn on University Avenue watching all the people and the University of Florida. Thursday nights are always hopping and Tuesday evenings you can catch the UF Senate hanging out after an evening of legislating. Overall great food, you must try the broccoli bites, they're cheesy fried pieces of broccoli. I always bring friends from out of town here and they're never disappointed.

Good food, good soups. Recommend eating on the back upstairs porch. Great for game days, but get there early! Very crowded on game days.

  • Marlene L.

This review does not include food menu since the wait time was 2 1/2 hours when i went, but i went on a game day. The atmosphere is very collegey....does this word exist? Anyways, the swamp is across the street from UF and the stadium, so plan on getting there early if you go on a game day. Table service is available inside and out, with about 3 or 4 bars located throughout the restaurant so if you're waiting for you're table you can always wait with a drink. I can't comment on the food since i didn't eat there but the selection seemed very typical for a sports bar. The Swamp is decorated with sports memorabilia all around and offcourse very Orange and Blue.

Describing the Swamp as Fratty would be somewhat of an understatement. Don't go on a Monday night unless you want to hear acoustic Dave Matthews and your ears to bleed. But, I can't deny that I love it here. Friday afternoon, you get out of class at 1ish, it's hot as crap outside. Head to The Swamp. Get a good buzz going on, then go home and take a nap before hitting the strip for some shenanigans. The food is good (I love the Buffalo Tender Wrap, mild normally but HOT late at night or when I have a cold), the drinks are average, except for the Tidal Wave...What Swamp has is a light and airy atmosphere that feels perfect for a sweltering afternoon in Florida. And I have not once come here without getting more drunk, or spending more money, or having more fun than I thought or intended I was going to have. I would recommend it to anyone...who can stomach people who frat hard.

I love their macaroni & cheese. Wasn't a big mac & cheese fan but i read the description and I couldn't pass the opportunity to try it out and I was not disappointed at all. A bit loud so if you're into more quite dining this is not your place its more like a bar than anything. They also have a patio seating and normally have live music. Not a bad place to try out.

We have only been here for lunches, with the kids before either a football game or a basketball game. It's conveniently located across from the University and the stadium. This afternoon we went back again and it was packed at 1 p.m. Had to put our name and leave a license to get the buzzer. Ended up waiting about 35 minutes and got a table inside, which was fine. Nothing that wonderful, but the kids really love it. We ordered non-alcoholic drinks and a few appetizers. They brought out the food rather fast, and did not give us settings, I jokingly did a mime to our waitress of using a untensil and she looked at me like HUH? Then she dropped off all the settings in a pile on the table and was one short. That was a little DUH-UH. We had a hummus appetizer, which was really good with carrots, celery and pita. Wings were really good and so were the pot stickers. We were a party of six, so we had no problem finishing all that up. Some of the kids had wraps, and I had an ahi tuna salad. Basically it was tasteless, but it wasnt fattening, that was for sure. The sweet potatoe fries are really tasty, worth the calories. No desserts, we had to get to the basketball game. They move you in and out pretty quickly. This is just a conveniently located place, and the food is decent enough. For a wrap, or a burger or salad, it's a safe bet.

The draft beer selection at Swamp could use some work, but the food I've had there has been consistently good and they have a good selection of unique cocktails. Swamp is at the higher-end of pricing for places in Midtown. I love the lights in the trees and the house feeling of the place. Their parties for Back to School, Halloween, St. Patrick's Day and such are pretty good, and the small cover charge includes a t-shirt for the event.
