This was my first time to this establishment and I was overwhelmingly surprised at the friendly service, the doped of my order and what I have to say was the best philly steak and onion rings I have had since moving to Florida. The sandwich was on a fresh French sub roll and the steak was cooked to mouth-watering perfection with slices of cooked onions, cheese and the perfect amount of mayo. The wax paper trapped the delicious juices! The small onion ring order was huge and the rings were hot, not greasy and totally scrumptious!!!!! This is a must-go place to enjoy and I will return this week to try the burgers.

I go here for breakfast on the reg. You have to get the BLT w/egg ALL THE WAY!! It's life changing. And hopefully you get there on a day they are feeling generous with the bacon! Sometimes I wonder how they don't lose money on them!

No one beats this place when it comes to bacon cheeseburgers. Back when I lived in Gainesville me and my roommate would roll out of bed at around 1130 am on our days off and drive on down to the Sandwich Inn for bacon cheeseburgers, onion rings, (rangz!) and big cokes with crushed ice! It was always a super awesome treat that happened at least once a week. Their buns are to die for! Super soft! Love local places like this one and highly recommend it for anyone who is craving sinful delicious burgers. No one comes close.

I love this place, they are delicious, cheap and always friendly.

Great old-fashioned drive through restaurant burgers. They have catfish sandwiches, their tuna sandwiches are peppery, you can order the entire menu all day. There's nothing like a double-double for breakfast! Or a fried egg with bacon sandwich... or hashbrowns and a tuna melt... The menu is diverse, inexpensive, and fast. I quite often go through and purchase breakfast and a sandwich for lunch and drive out for less than $8! The drive through goes along both sides of the building, so you can choose to go through the left side if you have a passenger, or the right side if not. I love their ice! It's the kind that freezes in a tube, then falls out, so it's like icee pellets. And their jumbo drink really IS a JUMBO! The owners are often working the windows and are friendly and always smiling. Don't get ketchup or salt & pepper... you don't need it. Just enjoy the food as is. Trust me.

Pros: Classic greasy wax paper burger. Very old grill. (Best for burgers) Nostalgic American drive thru Cons: GHETTO Very Dirty Cheap beef - seemed frozen Meat has no flavor Fries were old and hard

Although it looks like a hole-in-the-wall, this place is great for a non-chain fast food restaurant. It is quick, cheap, and nostalgic all in one. Picnic tables are available if you want to enjoy a nice Florida day and eat outside. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, some fries, and a chocolate milk shake and was not disappointed. My girlfriend had the fish sandwich and some hash browns (which I was told were amazing). They were. The entire meal came in at just under 10 dollars and didn't have the same over processed taste as other fast food joints. Needless to say, I will be returning.

I went for lunch here a couple of days ago, and enjoyed the quick, friendly service. The food is relatively simple but tasty, with no messing about of special sauces. Burgers "All-The-Way" are garnished with lettuce, tomato, and onion, with just mayonnaise as the dressing. Fries are simple string fries with salt. I would say that Sandwich Inn is in direct competition with Mac's a couple blocks down the road, and the menu is almost exactly the same. However, you don't get the traffic issues like you do at Mac's, and the food is just as good at the same price.

Pretty disappointed; I really wanted to like this place and thought I would based on all the positive reviews on here. I ordered a patty melt with fries and a butter pecan milk shake. The patty melt tasted like it was made of meat comparable to McD's and instead of coming on two slices of grilled bread as one expects of a patty melt, it was served inside a strange thin bread pocket. The fries were nothing to write home about- very similar to McD's and not crispy at all. The highlight of the meal was the butter pecan shake which really was very delicious with bits of pecans in it. Strong suits of this restaurant include cheap prices and friendly, fast service; however, I would pick Mac's every time over going to this place even if the wait is longer. I might return here for another shake, but really nothing else!

Not open for a lot of hours each day but for the hours they are open...man! man! man! These little tasty burgers hit the spot and a order of fries with salt sprinkled on them is just the right amount of flavor! Please go when you visit Gainesville.

Drive thru only no place to sit n eat . Slightly above average taste and quality at best . I love trying new places wouldn't go out of my way to come back. Prices are very reasonable.

When I moved to Gainesville I started looking for locally owned places that were also cheap. I heard about Sandwich Inn & gave them a try. I thought I wasn't going to be able to find them (they are very tiny) but they have a sign high up that helped. The parking area was big but there weren't many designated parking spots though. So we ordered our food. A large drink, a Cuban sandwich and a triple decker burger. The total was under $10. The Cuban was very tasty, but a little on the small side. My boyfriends burger looked like it came from Wendy's but it was sooo much cheaper. They did have a little area to sit with about 4 picnic tables. I gave them four stars because the wait time was a little long but for the price the food was good!

Ummmmmm...Yes please! I have been going here for years and I do not think that they have ever raised the prices. The menu continues to grow daily, and they just keep nailing new menu items to the wall until it has become this massive wall of deliciousness! They have different daily specials, and I try to make it on $1.89 bacon cheeseburger day. Bacon is where they hook me, it is so freaking crispy here, which is hard to find on a burger. It even stays crispy 30 minutes later, and is super addictive. The shakes are the perfect consistency and not too sweet. The service here is much faster than Mac's even though they have about the same amount of customers, the line moves twice as fast. What other burger place has fried okra? If you are in Gainesville and have not tried this place, there is something definitely wrong. If you do come here, you will see me in my parked car, wearing sunglasses with a burger in my hand. Definitely a Spring and Summer place, and I choose them over Mac's long lines any day.

So, checked this place out today based on all the positive reviews. It didn't do much for me. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, onion rings and fried okra. For a friend, I picked up a cheeseburger and fries. With her first burger bite, my friend recoiled, saying, "woof...salty. In fact, the cheeseburger is saltier than the fries." Not a great start. I ate my food and it was decent. The burger patty was a little weak and not seasoned well. The rings were okay as was the okra, but nothing special. Over all, not really anything to get excited about.

I suppose I have to give it 4 stars in this case, as there's really no competition for old fashioned burger joints in town. I've already given my general dislike for Mac's. Sandwich isn't all that dissimilar, but it tends to be faster, less greasy, and a little more tasty. I think the fries are definitely better than Mac's, but they could still use some work. The burger is serviceable for what it is and everything is dirt cheap. I just picked up breakfast from there on the way to work. The cheeseburger with egg was pretty good and hit the spot. The "hash rounds" were simply tater tots, meh. If you happen to be driving out of town, heading NW from Gainesville, you'll find the best sort of "local" burger joint (once again, since Louis closed down). This place in Alachua was also a Sandwich Inn for many years and I still call it that today, even though it changed to Bev's Better Burgers near 15 years ago. The burgers are amazingly delicious and juicy. They also opened one up in High Springs a few years ago. I hit either of those on occasion when going to see my parents. Give that a shot if you're heading in that direction. The burgers are well worth it and they're even great cold the next morning.

Sandwich Inn gained my attention via Yelp. It's funny how many times you drive by a place and never notice it's there... Sandwich Inn is an unassuming looking white building across from Loop-de-Loop and the huge ass Kangaroo on Main Street. We drove up around 430PM and there was only one other car there. It actually closes at 5, so we were cutting it close. The menu is tasty looking (see Yelp photos) and today (Tues) is bacon cheeseburger for $1.89 day. Awesome! So, after much contemplation, my boyfriend and I ordered 2 double cheeseburgers ($3.75), a small fry ($1+ change), small onion rings($1.10), small Coke ($1) and a small Root beer float ($1). Total? $9.50! Awesome squared! We waited for about 5 minutes in the car as the ladies cooked our food. I got to say, the expectations were high... thanks to Yelp :). The drinks came out first, then our hot food. The root beer float is awesome. Good, rich root beer with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. I just ate the ice cream first, then drank the root beer. It was worth more than the dollar we paid for it. The fries were decent, but nothing amazing. We had a few good crispy pieces, but a lot of soggier pieces. The onion rings were very tasty, crispy and rich, though a tad greasier than my stomach could handle. The burgers came with lettuce, tomato and mayo already on it. If you want ketchup, request it. The bacon was thick and crispy. Perfect. The onions were strong and fresh. The burger was just large enough to fill you up, not too much so that you feel gross after eating it. It was a very tasty burger, and for less than 2 bucks, much better than Five Guys. That's right, I said it. And what. Overall, I liked Sandwich Inn and now must go to Macs sometime to compare... Mmmm... burgers....

Went here for lunch and had a delicious, big, juicy burger. And it was priced fair and cheap. It's not good for you but it's so worth it.

OK we finally went today. Grabbing two burgers and two cheeseburgers with fries to go, to take home and eat. Burgers were tasty. My wife said she liked the fries. I thought they were a little to greasy, but they were good. At least you could tell they are real potato fries and not the extruded pressed one's McDonald's and Burger King sells. If you live on the east side of town I definitely would go here before the Burger King just 1 block away from there. BTW..prices were very good. We got everything listed above for $9.50.

Edit: Went back today because my officemate and I sat here for an hour saying how starving we were. Today I got the sausage egg and cheese sandwich. This place needs to raise their prices because at $2ish a sandwich I can justify going here every day instead of eating healthier options. --- My alarm didnt go off this morning, and I had to rush to make it in to work without breakfast. Feeling hungry on the way in, I knew there was no way I'd make it to lunch today. I came in to work checked to see if I needed to do anything, and decided to stop by Sandwich Inn real quick, because I work just up the street from it. I just got back to the office 10 minutes ago and felt compelled to write a review. I had the bacon egg and cheese sandwich and it was better than the ones my grandma used to make for me on Sunday mornings. The hashbrowns are deliciously greasy. Oh man, this is such good food. I can't wait to go back and try lunch and dinner options.

4.5 Awesome extra thick milkshakes. Cheap cheap cheap. Tasty tasty tasty. Double double is greasy, delicious goodness. Fries are on point. Patty melt is melty in your mouth heaven. With their daily deals, open at 6am and open on Saturdays this is a very hard place to beat if you're sick and tired of having the same crappy cheeseburgers around town.

Friendly and sassy ladies at the window. Super cheap and delicious food (my favorite combination). Fast service and close to my home. Couldn't ask for more from a drivethru.

  • Jim B.

Win. Its not Mac's BUT they are open on Saturday - so today I finally ventured there to check it out. Cheeseburger? Good as expected. Chocolate shake? Insanely thick - needs to melt down a bit before you can drink it. I'll be back to try other things soon.

Sandwich Inn looks like the kind of place you drive by without a second thought. But, if you decide to stop here for lunch, you won't be disappointed. Before writing anymore, know that this place does not sell gourmet sandwiches. It sells greasy, unhealthy, cheap mounds of goodness. Nothing on their menu is greater than $4. Awesome. I've tried so much stuff here. I would recommend everything. They have a variety of things from BLTs to Subs to Burgers and everything else. They have cheap daily specials so that is what i get. The BLTS are good. The Country Fried Steak and Egg Sandwich is good albeit greasy. A lot of their sandwiches come with eggs and bacon. The Bacon Cheeseburger is so good, I may stop writing now to run out and get one. But come early, cause they run out quick. The burgers are great and so are the fries. If you're looking for a nice meal to eat with a knife and fork, you just wasted your time reading this review. If you are with friends and are looking to grab a bunch of sandwiches, burgers, fries, onion rings, whatever...then get over there right now. They arent open at night and it's only drive thru. The service can be rude, but with such cheap good food, I could care less.

With the closing of Louis' Lunch the Sandwich Inn is now the oldest restaurant in Gainesville. The building looks like it probably did 50 years ago, but do not let that stop you. They have two drive up windows and one walk up window and the food is made to order so it is not as fast as other drive up restaurants, but it is worth it. I do not think anything on the menu is more than $3.99 and most things much less. Fresh, greasy and good is the best way to describe it! In my opinion for the price you can't beat the Sandwich Inn.

3 stars and I'm being nice. I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger and a Chocolate Milkshake. Bacon Cheeseburger: The patty seems to be some sort of a texturized vegetable product (or at least legume in nature). The milkshake was cold, thick and sweet but didn't offer much in terms of actual FLAVOR. Not that I think that Mac's is the ultimate in burgers by any means; but I don't understand how anyone can say this place is even remotely like Mac's (other than the "Inverted Veggie Configuration"). I suppose its allure is that it's cheap. I dunno'. I just don't quite get it; but if it floats your boat.....

My wife has lived here her entire life and never told me about Sandwich Inn, and I inevitably missed it myself, even though we used to frequent Northeast Park and drove right by it multiple times. She says she "forgot about it", but I find that hard to believe. What else is she hiding? Conspiracy! Honestly, I don't think anyone I know has ever mentioned Sandwich Inn, while at least 5 people I know have mentioned Mac's within the past few months. Take that statistic and multiply it by 1,000 and you have Gainesville. People either forget about it or just don't know... besides you Yelpers of course :) It's very similar to Mac's. Old building, greasy food, drive-thru/walk up only, megaphone speakers, etc. But Sandwich Inn has much faster service and a bigger menu. It's a no brainer for me. Just don't drop an onion ring in between your car seat and console like I did. I don't think I've ever had such a hard time deciding whether or not to eat something covered in dog hair and dirt.

I'm so pumped about discovering this place! So far I have only tried a couple things on the menu, but it's so extensive I;m excited to go back and try more items! I got an egg & cheese sandwich this morning with some hashrounds.... delicious, greasy and cheap. Then for lunch I picked up some chili dogs for my husband with some fries and onion rings..... Fries are similar to mac's except fresher and better seasoned... rings were delicious and the dogs were great! The chili is made out of mostly beans, not meat, but it was still good. I just love how the bread has been consistently soft and fresh... not dried out or stale. I will be returning here to try out the whole menu eventually!!

Huge let down from my yelpers in G'ville! I thought this was gonna be classic diamond in the rough but it turned out to be just a lump of coal! It took about 20 min just to get to the window to place the order and then another 30 min to actually get the food (Yes, about 50 min we waited here)! I was contiplating leaving as I sat and watched about 6 other cars behind me come and go, should have since I didn't pay yet. The bag and the lack of contents in it were smushed and looked as if it had been sat on. The wednesday special cuban sandwich had ham, nacho cheese, and some kind of mystery meat that smelled like pastrami?!? Idk what pastrami would be doing on a cuban but I can only hope that it was pastrami because I did end up taking a few bites. Didn't realize till we got home but the tuna melt we ordered never made it into the togo bag (blessing in disguise) and fries were soggy. Needless to say, everything made its way into the garbage pretty quick! I will give the 1 star towards the chocolate shake but you can get better at steak n shake. Buyer Beware!!! There's a reason why the prices are so cheap.

YUM! I love this place. If you like old school drive through fare, this place is for you. If you like sweet tea, do yourself a favor and order a gallon of it. It's only a dollar more than a jumbo cup of tea, and it comes with two jumbo cups of ice. Such a good deal. Their Double Double is where it's at. mmmm...Double Double. It's a double cheeseburger. So good. Their onion rings are pretty tasty, too. It's not health food, but, goodness, it does taste good.

Mmm, drive-thru restaurants. I started going here when I was remodeling the house. I got so hungry one day, it was as far as I could go without passing out. I have never regretted the stop. I'm picky with what I like on my burgers and they've never gotten it wrong the many, many times I've been through. I appreciate that. I love their fries, too. I can usually get pretty full here and not spend $5. The only reason they don't rate 5 stars is they have Pepsi products, and I'm a staunch Coke kind of girl. I also love the customer service. Whenever Madeleine is in the car, they run for the coffee can with the dog biscuits. Therefore, it's her favorite place for lunch. She also enjoys the parking lot kitties here (must be a neighborhood trend.) If she notices them, she'll actually howl!

A true Gainesville establishment. The food is not the best, but it sure is cheap and quick, and where else can you get awesome tater tots at 8 am?

  • Jason S.

For people who want Mac's like burgers without wanting to wait in the ridiculous line, the Sandwich Inn, conveniently located just a few blocks north of Mac's, provides your fix. Their tots and fried okra are boss, as are the mini corn dogs (when they serve them). Everything on the menu is dirt cheap, the building is a little dingy, but the food is classic drive-thru fare.
