Visited here last night with my friend Carey. What a cute little bar. Drinks were cheap and the food was great. I had the Shrimp Po Boy which had large battered shrimp and chipotle slaw, with sweet potato fries. It was fresh and spicy and delicious. Next time I want to try the Bang Bang Voodoo Cheesesteak!!

This is a tavern, just around the corner. My first visit was pleasant. My second visit, the menu had changed and was shortened to a few menu items... and my last visit was downright disappointing. Though I sat in plain view of the bartender, at no point in time was I acknowledged within the 1/2 an hour I awaited on service. Normally, I shrug things off and assume it's a rough day at work... but I was so disappointed that I took my business to Dom's, just down the street. And was confirmed, when while on a busy Friday night, was acknowledged and received service within 3 minutes of sitting down. If JST, is willing on fixing some of the broken cogs, in their machine... I would be willing to give them another chance.

Stopped here cause the mall exit was blocked and we found it on yelp. We got there late on a Monday night. I had the $5 Cheeseburger special with fresh cut fries. This was a darn good burger. With chicken tenders and they were good standard tavern food. Nice friendly folks just off 95. We will be back. Oh and they now have a new name -The North Quarter and have a Creole flair to their menu I wanna try.

Cute and cozy atmosphere but wasn't impressed by anything else. I went here a few months ago for Happy Hour with work friends after checking out their website and discovering great food and drink specials. When we arrived, our server/bartender told us their were no happy hour specials on food and that the website was outdated. 0 out of the 3 waitstaff we encountered with was not friendly at all.

This place has the BEST food! Mike is a phenomenal chef that puts his heart & soul into everything he makes. They had outstanding daily specials and awesome bartenders. The place is so nice inside, you will be pleasantly surprised. We will be back for sure!

Really good huge veggie burger. This place was family friendly w / a kid's menu, booster seat and lots of sports on TV for my older son. A solid sports bar w/ a family friendly slant. Thumbs up!

HOMOPHOBIC bar.... Approached by some regulars who appeared to be egged on by a waitress. While sitting with my female friend, I was asked one of the rudest questions I have ever been asked in my life: "So, are you girls straight?" He was not joking and did not appear to be overtly drunk. Once we politely as we could said none of your business, he seemed offended and said, "so I'm never going to know?" Yes, you are never going to know. And we are never coming back because not only did the service suck, people suck, so did our burger. If you like being judged, eating horrible food, and never seeing your waitress this is YOUR BAR!!

Really good wings and a fitty cett special. I had the chicken cheesesteak too that was great. Cool place and friendly staff. Thanks!

Was good when the big fish management took over in the beginning, now it is back to the same old James street. Menu has gone to shit and mediocre food. What a shame they were heading in the right direction. Most of the unique and good items have been removed from the menu!!!!

    (2)
  • Sandra E.

I had hoped the new management would keep the menu as inspired as it was when they took over. They didn't. The bison burger with onion marmalade is now just a cheese burger and fries. The lightly breaded calamari with Asian slaw is now the frozen calamari with jar tomato sauce. Sweet potato fries are rubbery and so on and so on. Oh well, you can get a burger and a beer anywhere.... how sad.

A diamond in the rough! I love this place. Great wait staff and bartenders. Great specials and great tavern food. Love taco night on Tuesday's. $2 beef and chicken soft tacos and $2 Corona and Modello. Great place for a good, quick weekday lunch too.

FINALLY FINALLY after seeing months worth of daily special pictures I was able to consume food here and by no means was there even 1% disappointment from start to finish! The tavern itself has a local small town appeal to it and you can tell it's ran by locals for locals (and us out of towners visiting family). It is divided by bar area and dining area, but don't let the size of the restaurant fool you as I came here for lunch and attended later in the evening live music and this place certainly can accommodate quite the crowd if the need arises! Another bright point was the staffing. Between the waiter during lunch and the tag team of waitresses we had during the evening periods they were all down to earth and genuinely polite (not the "genuinely polite" I get out here in the wild west). Top billing though bar none goes to the outstanding chef they have here by the name of Mike Goodwin. I was able to dive into the mind of this culinary mastermind through a brief table side conversation and you can clearly tell he pours his blood, sweat, and tears (due to health codes, NO not literally) into the food and his ability to take a simple daily special and enhance it to what he produces speaks volumes! Now on to the food. OMG come hungry is about all I can say as you'll want to sample just about everything on the menu! For what I'll call brunch while I was in the area I dined on the special du jour, a Monte Cristo Sandwich. All I can say is from having the "world famous" Disneyland Monte Cristo there was a world of competition there, but Mike and company blew that concoction out of the water. Of course it had the customary turkey, ham, and provolone mixture, but what separated this from the pack was it being dipped in Rumchatta french toast batter. C'mon Son?!? That would make anyone want to slap themselves silly! Also which I'll give honorable mention to (completely sounds silly saying that because these are a must have) was the north quarter nachos!! Nothing says true love like a tortilla chip packed with melted cheese, BBQ bourbon sauce, and topped with andouille sausage. I kid you not it'll feel like Mardi Gras in your mouth! I initially was supposed to attend a fundraiser for my brother that had passed away years prior due to a brain tumor, but it was postponed due to a massive snow storm so it was decided since there had been scheduled live music here that night to go back and have dinner there earlier than expected, what the hell right? So dinner consisted of crowd pleaser buffalo wings (topped again with that BBQ bourbon sauce) and the Harris family BBQ bourbon shrimp. I admit the one flaw was the shrimp being cooked a bit over to my liking, but it was no way over cooked..It comes partnered with a scoop of sour cream and a bowl of red beans and rice which wasn't overly spiced and went hand in hand with the shrimp like ironically enough, white on rice. Ha! (The jokes don't get any better folks) I know that Cheers is where everybody knows your name, but screw that I want my name known here instead! KUDOS! KUDOS! To channel the terminator, I'll be back!

New manager, new chef. The ten dollar BJ special tasted like something from Fridays.. Not great. From what i understand, the old chef is opening a place on union. Something with the word creole in it, sorry i cant remember! Anyhoo, no more voodoo bbq sauce and no more 5 dollar burgers on mondays. We will see how it goes. PS the french fries use to be great, now they are so so. Miss the skins on them! Portion sizes seem smaller now as well....also you better hope the credit card machine is working when you show up.. Or bring cash.. So sad that ny weekly monday spot has turned for the worst!

Whoa. So we went to this place for my coworker's belated birthday lunch. Our waitress was really nice, but by the end of the 2 hour period we were there we were ready to hurt her. We all ordered salads or burgers for lunch. There were 6 of us total at our table and there was 1 other table of guys just drinking in the entire restaurant. The 3 of us who got salads got them way before the people who got burgers. There were a few mistakes with a couple dishes and the waitress referred to thousand island dressing as "long island dressing" but overall the food wasn't bad. I got a house salad w/ a crab cake on top. The crab cake was good and huge, but there was more breading/filling than I'd like. The balsamic vin. looked suspect so I swapped it for ranch prior to enjoying my meal. When we mentioned it was our coworkers birthday, the waitress offerred her a free shot, but since we were clearly there for our lunch break (w/our boss who's 9 mos. pregnant I might add), she had to decline the offer. However, when the birthday girl asked if she could substitute the free sandwich coupon she had to be used towards her salad they said no. But it gets better. Before declining the birthday girl's coupon request, the waitress offerred to give us separate checks "to make it easier". This took her nearly an hour to figure out (I'm not kidding)...and then when we got our checks she didn't even apply the free sandwich coupon to one of the other girls' meals!! By that time we'd been there for 2 friggin hours and had to be back at work. Oh and I just got a text from my supervisor saying she may be in labor as I'm typing this review. The stress of James St. Tavern sent her into early labor! Ahh. So, although the food wasn't bad I won't be returning to this place unless I plan on drinking heavily at the bar; they do seem to have good happy hour specials.

Stumbled upon this place while on a bar crawl last weekend. Bar tenders and staff all super nice. There was about 30 of us and we had a blast. They had a live band and feature pretty good drink specials for Saturday nights. We ordered food to go since it was on to the next one ( bar that is ) Friend and I spilt fries and sliders . the fries well seasoned and crispy and came with my request a side of BBQ ( im not a fan of ketchup) I didn't really need the condiment but the sauce was a combo of tangy and sweet . Silders I cant comment on since I don't fool with cows but I were told they were yummy. Not pricey at all a lil out of the way for me on a normal basis but I think this place might be worth checking out for dinner.

James Street Tavern is just the surprising little nook to hit (ESP after jumping around Pump It Up! around the corner!) !!! Since we were hitting James Street Tavern pretty late, we had to make use of the late-night bar menu - AND IT ROCKED! Wings - boneless or not - mild, spicy, or Asian BBQ! Gettem' in 5, 10, or 12 pieces. (Watch out for the ranch dressing...a little watery :-( Cheesesteak rolls, fried oysters, fries - sweet potato or regular. Large portions, itty bitty prices! But it's the super-classy desserts that really took the cake ;-p Caramel Apple Stresel Nut Pie: so light & airy! Completely finishable after a meal (even though I ALWAYS start with dessert first! - so what do *I* know ;-) Just an FYI: although it was delish, it was a surprise to find the Pomegranate Banana Cheesecake to be served warm and have a bread-pudding texture. Surrounded by whipped cream, it was heavenly! Can't wait to try the Peanut Butter Cup next! All in all, a GREAT place to relax with friends, whether in ball gowns after a wedding or t-shirts & giggles!

Although I live in DE, I usually go to Philadelphia for my social needs;however, when I saw the first signs of its this little spot, I made a mental post it to check it out. Fast forward a month or so and my friends and I found ourselves bored, hungry and dressed to the nines after a charity event. Instead of going back to my house for a typical endless night of Rock Band and booze, I suggested we go to James Street to grab some food and liquid fun. The place was shiny and new at this point and upon entering, we were greeted by a super friendly staff and a wonderful waitress. The waitress had informed us that they had just turned off the fryer for the night (it was late) and so we decided we could just order drinks. After a deep look into our hungry eyes, she then insisted that the chef could make us subs (hoagies if you're in the know) with whatever we liked and it wouldn't be a problem at all. We were a little hesitant at first because we didn't want to be "that customer" but she reassured us and minutes later we were stuffing our faces with glorious food. We left that night with a good feeling about this place that made me want to come back again, and soon. About 2 months later, I returned with a very large group of about 20 crazy Eagles fans to watch a playoff game and they were extremely accommodating during our 3 hour stay. We did rounds of shots, ate an insane amount of food and despite an Eagles loss, had a spectacular time. When the check came, it was a pleasant surprise to see it was only $5.00!!! Ok, maybe not, but man was it a steal. Although I live within walking distance I do not go to this place as often as I probably should. It is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood and the atmosphere is an equal balance of upscale and laid back. Its even the kind of place where you can sip a fine wine while having a conversation about McNabb's contribution (or lack thereof) to the Eagles offense with a complete stranger. I suggest if you are in the area, stop in and make your own story. There is even a liquor store attached with a vast array of wines and beer if you can't leave without a souvenir.

I have been wanting to try this place for a while, as it's very close to my house and then was voted "Best Late Night Food" in DE Today. My husband and I finally made it there this weekend and really enjoyed it! The place is connected to (and owned by) a Wine & Spirit shop, so they have a decent beer & wine selection and are able to offer really great prices on both bottles of wine and happy hour specials. They had a small, but good, menu and we tried a sampling of items. We started with the $1 oyster special (which were plump and tasty) and shared bruschetta and steak spring rolls. The spring rolls seemed homemade and were delicious and the bruschetta was nice. For the entrees I tried the flank steak which came with the most amazing cioppolini onion with bacon. The steak was cooked perfectly, but the onlons were just ridiculously good. He ordered the chicken with loaded mashed and asparagus. Both sides were fantastic, but the chicken was a bit well done. What I appreciated was that they sent both meals out and the manager quickly came out and apologized for the overdone chicken and assured my husband that another piece was being prepared. It came out almost immediately. I liked that they were able to correct the mistake while not affecting the timing of our meal and the quality of the other food. We were too full to get dessert, but everything looked delicious. The decor and atmosphere were really nice, they have a lot of tvs for sports fans, but it didn't have a "sports bar" feel to it. The service was great- they were very busy, but none of the staff came across as being weeded or rushed. I'll definitely go back and wanted to put this place on people's radar!

My husband and I got a groupon and saw good reviews for James Street Tavern before we went. We were both drawn to the Bison Burger because it sounded pretty gourmet. It was supposed to come on a brioche roll with caramelized onion marmalade. Neither of these things were true. It came on a dry kaiser roll and the "marmalade" was sauteed onions. There was nothing else on the burger...no lettuce or tomato or mayo. We asked if the burger came with cheese and the waiter said it came with provolone, so I asked for no cheese and my husband asked to substitute it with cheddar. For some odd reason we were charged for the cheese. It made no sense. The burger itself was a little tough and could have used more seasoning, but it was really disappointing that it was no where near its description on the menu. I also asked to substitute the sweet potato fries for a side salad and found in addition to my side salad, there were potato chips on my plate. While this could be seen as generous or a freebie, it sort of defeated the purpose of making a healthier substitution. Our food also took a pretty long time considering that they were just burgers and there was hardly anyone there at the time. The over all experience was kind of disappointing, and seeing as it's well out of our way, we probably won't be going back.

I love this place. It is friendly and clean, has updated decor and great food. The menu is always changing but everything I have had has been delicious. It's a good place to catch a baseball or football game. They also have a luau every August, which has lots of different drinks, food & entertainment.
