Currently, my favorite ice cream of all time. Large portions, small prices, GREAT ice cream! Only thing is, I'm not revealing a secret here; the world IS beating a path to their door. Expect to wait in line to order, sometimes as long as 15 - 20 minutes. It's worth it, though! Small negative, there IS (or was) a loyalty (punch card) program but the last few times, they haven't had cards available. They also have a new store in Dewey Beach. Same ice cream, somewhat higher prices, no cows to thank outside the store.

There is absolutely nothing better. My fiance and I stopped in earlier today and both got milkshakes- coconut and the apple pie. Both were delicious! Always worth a stop on the way to the beach.

Vanderwende's ice cream is amazing! It's the perfect place to stop on a ride home from the beach. There are picnic tables and rocking chairs you can chill in while you enjoy your sweet treat. And there is a whole herd of happy cows that provide some nice farm-y background music. Heads up - the portions are massive. I got two scoops and couldn't finish it! But the flavors are so tasty and fresh that it's next to impossible to exercise self-control here. I recommend the cookies 'n cream. I had the cooke dough too, but it didn't have much dough in it. Btw - they accept credit cards! Hoorah!

(6/28/2015) Great family-run business, happy cows make happy ice cream! Worth a stop on your way to and from the shore. So wish we had planned ahead and brought a cooler so that we could take ice cream home. Flavors are just interesting enough to appeal to everyone. Great heavy creamy mouthfeel, not too fatty, but a touch "sticky". Flavorings seemed to be from artificial, although the dairy is legit. Prices (enormous scoops, everyone asks "is that just one scoop"?) can't be beat. You can sit outside at the lounge tables with the very cows you are beholden to.

One of my very rare 5 stars. How could anyone not provide a superlative rating? (Okay, there's one bathroom - very clean - and might be a bit of a wait.) But, don't miss this stop. Fresh ice cream from this dairy. Delicious, creamy. $2 for very generous single serving and $3 for double that. $5 for large shake that overfilled our 19-year old, 185 pound son. Very clean. Worth a detour. Just do it.

Delicious and amazing ice cream with a huge variety of flavors. Definitely worth stopping and getting some. Incredible portions at a decent price.

This is a great place to stop for farm fresh ice cream!! The milk that is in the ice cream comes straight from the cows outside! Just thinking about this place makes my mouth water. Make sure you thank the cows when you leave! :)

  • Allison H.

Pretty disappointed. Came out on recommendations and hoped to get milk and cheese from those cows right outside the shop as raved about. But all the cheese was from a place in Pennsylvania! And all the milk was skim! What a rip off. As the non-local nor fatty icing on the cake, we tasted a few ice creams and settled on which to get, only to be sent to the end of a pretty long line to order after already waiting in line to get the tastes. We just walked out.

Amazing fresh ice cream :))) Great customer service and so friendly. I had a milkshake that was perfectly mixed My gf had two scoops and they mean when they say their big scooops. Recommend to everyone that loves ice cream Worth the trip. Note* Need to up date address. Actual address is 4003 Seashore Hwy, Greenwood, DE 19950

Thanks Yelp, for leading me to this great find! Delicious ice cream, $2 for a massive scoop, and you can sit outside and watch the cows that "made" it? What could be better? The dog scoop is pretty cool, too - my boy Waldo enjoyed it. It wasn't listed so you may have to ask for it. Basically a scoop of vanilla with a mini Milkbone on top.

  • Nini K.

The most delicious and creamiest ice cream I tried on the East Coast. It's not sweet, taste amazingly fresh and comes in many fun flavors. One giant scoop is only $2!!! The cows that the milk comes from are in the fields right outside the shop :)

Best ice cream of life ever. Love the clean bathrooms, indoor seasonally decorated eating area, homemade waffles cones, the ICE CREAM. Family of four had tons of ice cream all for 9 bucks.

  • Hank K.

Best ice cream ever!! You get to see the cows up close as well. Perfect to stop by on the way down from north east to Virginia. Make sure to order baby scoop. Regular scoops are pretty big!!

In the middle of nowhere Delaware (pretty sure that most of Delaware is the middle of nowhere, but this is true nowhere) there lies a small dairy farm with a store out front. You'll see smattering of Holstein cows to the side. These are the producers of the milk that is used to make the ice cream inside. You can't get more fresh than that. Vanderwendes offers pretty standard flavors... you won't find any crazy flavors here. What you will find is gigantic scoops with very low price tags. I wanted to get a cute photo of the ice cream cone with the cows in the background so I originally asked for a 3 scoop waffle cone with 3 different flavors. The high school girl taking my order looked aghast. She said "one scoop fills the cone, the second scoop come to here (and gestured)...I'm not even sure how you would get a 3rd scoop on there". She did say that I could get 3 flavors in 2 scoops. That didn't make much sense to me, but I acquiesced. Once I saw the cone I got what she was saying. Basically every 1 Vanderwendes scoop equals 3 ice cream scoop scoops. We couldn't even finish the cone. Price was $4; a serious bargain. We went with lemon chiffon, cookies and cream, and peanut butter fudge crunch. My favorite flavor was the PBFC with cookies and cream coming in second. FYI my friend and I couldn't finish the whole 2 scoop cone. On the way home we stopped again and got a single scoop cone this time... berry cheesecake and apple pie. The apple pie was fantastic, the berry cheesecake a meh in my book. If you ever drive by Vanderwendes be sure to stop. If you go for a 3 scoop waffle cone I would love to see it.

BEST ICE CREAM EVER! My boyfriend and I were traveling from Maryland to Delaware and passed this creamery on the road. When we realized that we had just passed a creamery, he literally made a U-turn in the middle of the road! We have an Ice Cream addiction to say the least... They serve Premium Farm Fresh, Homemade Ice Cream. They also offer a variety of other Dairy Products such as Specialty Flavored Milk, Butter, and many delicious types of Cheese. My boyfriend tried their chocolate milk in the glass bottle and it was gone within minutes, he said it was the best tasting milk ever and didn't make him feel sick afterwards. They have a policy in which if you were to return the glass bottle you would receive $2.00 back for recycling. Their Ice Cream is available in Cups, Cones, Homemade Waffle Cones and Bowls. They also offer Milkshakes, Floats, Sundaes, Pints, Quarts, Banana Splits, Ice Cream Sandwiches and Ice Cream Cakes. Personalized Ice Cream Cakes are available with 24 hours notice. I ordered a double bowl scoop of coconut and birthday cake. Best combo ever! It was delicious.

One of the best ice cream places there is. We make it a point to stop there on our way back from Rehoboth Beach every time. On my bday, we realized we wouldnt make it to their place until 10 mins after their close time. My wife called them and they told us they'll stay open until we got there! 5 stars aren't just enough to describe this place and their quality of customer service. Highly recommended!

So fresh and creamy and ambience is bright and airy. Lots of fun flavors and cone combinations.

This review is for the Dewey Beach location on a busy Sunday night. First, the ice cream is delicious! There were seven of us, and we all tried different flavors. One scoop is more than enough ... the scoops are enormous. However, the service by the two teenagers who were doing the scooping was not good. It was Sunday night, after dinner, and the location was obviously short staffed. The young woman at the order desk/cash register was efficiently taking orders. The two servers were chatting with each other, gossiping, and not moving very fast. The girl tried to chat up an acquaintance who was in line; when he didn't respond, she stopped to comment on him to her co-worker. I have been served at similar dairy stores and there are systems and tools that would help. At one point the girl on the register had to stop taking orders and go over to fill them. Two more people at least were needed to keep the line moving and the orders flowing.

Really yummy ice cream!! Freshly made... It is literally on a farm.. One scoop is $2 (and is actually 2 scoops) so a really great deal for such delicious ice cream!! :)

  • Cecilia R.

Amazing! My family saw this ice cream shop, surrounded by cows, on our way to the beach and on the way back, we had to stop by and try it. To emphasize just how captivating this place was, we had forgotten where we saw it and we drove slowly for 20 minutes looking for it to make sure we found it. The ice cream, incredible! Naturally made from cows right on the land. Creamy, flavorful, exactly what you would expect from an authentic location. A must stop on the way to or back from Bethany Beach. What an amazing business too!! The store was polished but maintained its humble culture with photos of the founders and a story of how they began.

Just thinking about this place is making my mouth water. Like the other reviewers, my friend and I were on a trip to somewhere else and passed by Vanderwende Farm on the way. Neither one of us are big on sweets and ice cream, but who among us can pass up fresh, homemade ice cream? This stuff is amazing. I had one scoop of strawberry (which looked like 3 scoops) and my friend had an apple pie shake. We both liked it so much we stopped by again on the way back home and shared one scoop of cookies and creme. If you are anywhere near this place, do yourself a favor and make time to stop by. Happy eats!

Holy cow!! Just by chance stop by seeing a field full of cars. Huge scoops of unbelievable fresh home made ice cream!!' The milk cows are in view!! Wonderful treat to stumble on.

  • Anna S.

Incredible ice cream at an unbeatable price. $2 for "one" scoop that's really 2 scoops (look at the pictures - seriously you only need one scoop)

  • Alyssa A.

Wow, we passed this place on the way into Ocean City and on the way home we made it a point to stop! So glad we did. It was about 11:45 am and the parking lot was filling up as we were making out decisions. Never in my life have I had ice cream such as this. Everything was so fresh and real! I had one scoop ($2) of the berry cheesecake, which had full plump blackberries inside, and he stuck with two scoops ($3) of chocolate. These "scoops" were mounding and were worth way more to us than Vanderwendes was charging. I have nothing bad to say here, I brag on their quality, quantity and price points. If you are anywhere within 100 miles of this place, you should make it a point to stop! You will not be disappointed!

The...best...ice...cream! Hands down best ice cream on the East Coast. We travel from MD to Bethany Beach several times a month and can not resist stopping for a scoop each time. Be warned, the single scoop is massive! Such a deal for $2.00. The staff is friendly, patient, helpful and so very efficient. The summer lines move really fast. The bathrooms and shop are pristine. They even let you choose two flavors to comprise one scoop! (Thank you from the bottom of my indecisive, youngest son's heart!) Such an awesome establishment! We LOVE Vanderwende's!

  • Greta N.

Great afternoon pit stop to break up the drive home from the shore. Great selection of flavors, all delicious. Our family tried the cookies & cream, coconut, peanut butter fudge tracks, cookie dough, and strawberry. Our son's strawberry was the favorite. Very generous portions, welcoming service, clean place! Great prices, too.

This ice-cream parlor gets my first 5 star rating. It was SOOOO good! Exceeded expectations with generous portions and inexpensive prices. I couldn't believe it. One scoop is $2. Two scoops is $3. Fresh waffle cones $1. And a scoop is not a scoop, it's like infinity.

    (5)
  • John S.

I can't say enough about this place. Amazing, pure, delicious ice cream. Love the huge scoops for a low price.

    (5)
  • Chris B.

This was great ice cream and at a very good price. Highly recommend you stop and sit a spell. You only need one scoop! They are hugh.

  • Reeping W.

They don't deserve a low rating for their ice cream, which is outstanding. It is for their information! I think I give up! Having been told that they would be closed Wednesday and Thursday, I had no expectation of ice cream! But as we came by, we saw the flags flying, so swung in, hopeful once more. It was 11:20. In the time it took to hop out and ask the young woman working out front, and to be told that they would not open until noon, 3 potential customers left sadly. I know, I know, I really need to show up when they are open if only I could trust their phone or pages! Oh well, maybe once more...?

Alright I'm going to try and make it through this review without one cow pun. Driving back from the Delaware beaches last weekend, I made an almost immediate pull over as soon as I saw the sign for Vanderwende. Homemade ice cream fresh from the source? Yes please. For it being winter in the middle of farm country, this place had a decent amount of people in it. I was expecting just a few different flavors but man was I wrong. The list was filled with many different flavors. And on top of that, there were several seasonal additions to that. I decided to get a scoop from each menu, chocolate chip and maple walnut. I was not ready for what was about to hit me... Just as a number of other people have mentioned, the serving sizes here are gigantic. Almost too big. But I'm not going to say no to generous offerings. It's incredible the difference between Vanderwende and ice cream you would get in the grocery store. The flavors are more pronounced. It has just the right amount of sweetness. The wall of sugar cone sweetness that hits you as you walk in is enticing enough! I would recommend this to any and all ice cream lovers! When you're passing through Bridgeville, definitely give Vanderwende a stop. If not for the ice cream, then for the beautiful scenery and time with the cows.

We stopped here on a whim while driving down to ocean city and I'm SO happy we did!! Cow fields surround it so you know your ice cream is fresh as can be. The scoops are massive and the ice cream is cheap... I had a huge waffle cone for only $4! A must stop if anywhere nearby

    (5)
  • Dave M.

Wow. Terrific ice cream. Creamy and tasty. And an excellent value ... a $2 "one" scoop is like 2 or 3 times the amount of a Baskin Robbins scoop ... for half the price. This was my first time there and I wanted to try different flavors so I made the "mistake" of getting three scoops (for $4 ... cheap!). Holy moly, it was way too much ... equal to like 10 scoops of ice cream. Embarrassingly, I ate it ALL. Mocha almond fudge was great. Coconut was really good. Vanilla fudge ripple was yummy. Peanut butter was too much.

Freshly made and tastey ice cream! Very reasonable prices and very friendly staff!

  • Casey G.

WORLD'S BEST ICE CREAM!!! I'm not even kidding I've had a lot of ice cream in my life and I'm very picky but this is by far the BEST! They're also really nice and friendly. The cows that make the dairy are also visible so you know the ice cream came from healthy cows and they have plenty of seats inside and outside! Occasionally they'll have long lines but no more than a 5 minute wait for your delicious scoop of heaven and trust me it's worth the wait!!!

    (5)
  • Amanda S.

AMAZING!!! Don't drive back from the beach without stopping here. Everything is fresh and delicious. Worth the wait and a great price.

    (5)
  • Rob B.

Saturday 8PM, open despite Yelp showing closed, maybe summer hours? I might regret this stop because I will never pass this by again without a visit! Perfect is all I can say, 0% overrun, and cheap! Bryers could make a 1/2 gallon from the baby size! STOP! Stand in line and wait, we'll worth it and the calories.

    (5)
  • Serena B.

Mmmmm delicious! A great stop on the way back from the Delaware beach. There were a ton of flavors to choose from, as well as ways to have your ice cream: milkshake, in a cup, sugar cone, homemade waffle cone. There are also a lot of toppings too- including "wet nuts," which apparently are walnuts in maple syrup, must be a local thing! The only downsides- long wait, only one bathroom (with a looooong line) and tacky signs on the glass to not touch the glass. I am so glad we stopped and I would definitely go again!

  • Lady Phade 1.

On the way back from OC...craving ice cream-spotted a sign for homemade ice cream out in the middle of nowhere- so glad I stopped! Parking lot was full so I knew it had to be good. Cows were right there on the field next to the ice cream shop. Fresh ice cream. I had Annie's Apple Pie - pieces of apples and pie crust in the vanilla ice cream = heaven. I asked for a one scoop and got a huge stuffed cone. See picture. Also sell fresh cheese in great flavors, ice cream sandwiches and they make their own waffle cones (1.00 extra) For about 4bucks, this stop was completely worth it!

I've become a bit of an ice cream snob after working for a popular handmade ice cream company for the past year. Whenever I see a creamery or new ice cream joint I have to admit that I'm a bit skeptical. Is it really ice cream? Where does the cream come from? Is this just another Cold Stone and dear god I hope they don't sing at me? With Vanderwende, there aren't many questions. The cows are hanging out right next to the place, chewing their cud and moseying around. This is the perfect little spot in the middle of nowhere to get some ice cream. They have a quaint (Amish-built) store that has a few seats inside and also sells milk, cheese, and cakes. There's plenty of seating outside as well on a nice day, and even a little place for a photo-op. The ice cream is perfect. I always get a milkshake and ask them to thin it out a little bit, I practically live for these things with [insert any ice cream here] and peanut butter sauce. Friendly, farmy, and great for the family.

AMAZING ICE CREAM! We stopped here on our way home and ended up getting ice cream and cheese! so delish!

Their ice cream is the best! We've become addicted! Every time we ride down 404 we have to stop.

  • Bryan G.

Living just 10 minutes away from Vanderwende's is a dangerous thing! We've been making that drive a lot lately. The waffle cones are made right there behind the counter and are top notch. It would take a bigger guy than me to eat more than a single scoop. Just please be careful, that's a dangerous stretch of highway.

    (5)
  • Rebecca C.

This is a roadside ice cream shop started by the same family that owns and runs Little Wagon Produce just a few miles away (also a great spot, esp for the delish bi-color corn). The milk/cream is from the cows that live on the same land as the shop. There are several excellent regular flavors available all year round, but the seasonal flavors are outstanding (pumpkin in the fall, eggnog in the winter, and so on). It's fresh, delicious ice cream that is made on-site, sells for a reasonable price, and served up with a smile! Be warned -- the scent of the home-made waffle cones is intoxicating when you walk in. They also sell locally-produced cheeses and milk in glass bottles. If you are on your way to or from the beach, do yourself a favor & stop at Vanderwende's.

i finally stopped here...and figured it was good...but this is the best....huge serving for 1 scoop and the cherry vanilla almost had too many black cherries... even better than u of maryland college park turner lab ice cream.

Smelled like fresh waffles when I walked in. Lots of choices. Friendly staff let me customize my own shake

We discovered this place on the way home from the beach a few weekends ago. We've been taking daytrips to the beach ever since and always stop by Vanderwende's for ice cream. It is seriously the best ice cream I've ever had and the prices are incredible. I got two scoops of butter pecan on my first visit and was amazed at how much ice cream was in the cup. So delicious. I've had the Rocky Road, Banana, and Coffee flavors so far, but Butter Pecan is the best. Can't wait to visit again this weekend!

  • Gusty S.

Highly recommend stopping here if you're en route to/from the Delaware beaches. Fabulous homemade ice cream. It doesn't get more locally sourced than this. Great flavors. Generous portions. Outdoor and indoor seating. And pretty cheap compared to mass manufactures ice cream stands elsewhere.

  • Rita H.

We stopped on the way back from the beach--wow, what a great treat. good portions and very good price (much cheaper than your typical chain ice cream store). love the farm family feel. Would recommend you put signs up a few miles ahead so tourists like me get plenty of advance notice (but highly worth if you miss it--to turn around--we did and didn't regret it!

The best ice cream ever. I love this place. We have been going since opened and this is a "must stop" on the way home from the beach.

My in-laws suggested this place after dinner. The shop was clean and ice cream was great. My 2 year old daughter got a baby scoop of banana with rainbow sprinkles and she loved it. For me, the 1 scoop was just a little too much, next time I will get a baby scoop. The smell of apple dumplings and fresh waffle cones are very tempting! We will definitely be going back!
