A Delaware native, I grew up going to the beach and always going to get Grottos. I've moved to many places and now am located in Western PA. I still have these intense craving for Grottos and tell my family whenever they come up to visit that they have to bring Grottos with them. Maybe it's that sweet sauce. Maybe it's that perfectly charred crust that is not too thick and not too thin but is oh so satisfying. The company actually originated in Wilkes Barre, PA, but I suppose it exploded at the beach since that's a more exciting atmosphere. Not to say that Wilkes Barre isn't exciting but there are certain foods that trigger a feeling when at an awesome natural scape such as the beach. And yes we called it the BEACH in Delaware not the shore.

Nasty attempt at pizza here and @ all their outlets. Does anyone ever eat here twice? Avoid going unless you have a desire for cardboard smothered in ketchup. Blecch!

Worse than bar food-stay away This was an unfortunate experience from every angle. We only decided to go there because every other restaurant had an hour + wait. The only positive was that we only waited 15 minutes. With a family of 7, we were hungry and ready for our first decent meal in Ocean View, Delaware. Cleanliness = 1. It was dingy and the menus and tables felt sticky. Incredibly loud. Food = 0. Granted we didn't order pizza, but there was not much that could be described as edible. The boneless wings were so caked in breading and sauce. Probably to cover up the quality of the meat. At $17, it was pretty disappointing. The burger was plain and sad. The southwestern salad had a strange taste and the chicken was disgusting. The panini was soggy and horrible. The tuna salad tastes like it came straight from a can. Service = 1. While we did receive food and drink, that's about all our server provided. He did not seem happy with his job or with us. We were an inconvenience. In short, this restaurant was disrespectful towards the food and the customer. Wait the hour at another restaurant. This experience was sub par.

It is better than expected. The Bakers choice which has pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, sweet peppers, garlic, onion, and extra cheese is above average. I thought this would be a Chuckie Cheese type pizza, but it actually pretty edible if not a little tasty.

A large 3-topping pizza will cost you $25. I repeat, $25. This is amusement park pricing and fairly ridiculous.

Been coming to Bethany Beach since 1980 and Grotto has always been a family tradition. Great pizza!!

The one star has nothing to do with the food or the service but the fact that their air conditioning is broken. We ate at the one right on the boardwalk and it would have been fine if they opened the windows and had fans but they didn't and it was sweltering. To make it even worse, our server said it had been like that for weeks.

  • Kevin B.

Price gouging! I know this is a beach town, but $29+ for a pizza and 10 wings? To make things worse the take out pizza was cold (and we picked it up when they said it would be ready) and soggy. The wings weren't too bad. I would not recommend this place unless you are famished and just can't wait long enough to go someplace else.

There is a reason Grottos has been around for 55 years. There food is outstanding. So far there pizza is one of the best anywhere. I have been on a quest for the best Pizza. I have eaten pizza across the Unites States. Grottos and Park Pizza in Williamsport Pennsylvania are definitely the best so far. I will continue my quest but since I have been eating Grottos for over 25 years, I dout I will find any better!

This has always been our first stop on our family vacation- I love the food and the staff is always friendly and fun! The arcade isn't like it used to be but its still a little something to keep the kids busy

I grew up on Grotto's pizza and after moving to Baltimore I crave it allllll the time. I went home last week for Thanksgiving and was so happy when my parents suggested we stop there for lunch while out and about in Bethany Beach. I love the BB location specifically because of the boardwalk down the middle of the dining room. They aren't located on the boardwalk so they brought the beachy feel to the restaurant which I love to see. They were decked out in Christmas decorations which I also loved since the holiday spirit can be lost at the beach. You don't often think of the holidays and snow when walking along the water. My go-to when at Grotto's is the plain pizza. So simple yet so good! I always enjoy seeing their signature swirl of sauce and cheese on the pizza. I also really enjoy their French onion soup. The combination is spot on and delicious. You can't forget the birch beer to wash it all down!

The bakers choice and the veggie bianco are our go tos for dinner! If you want a great pizza, you have to stop in!

  • Liz K.

the pizza was pretty good. I guess I was expecting more. That being said we did order pick up and extra cheese. I would try a pizza in house and order with regular cheese.

I don't understand why people love this place. Worst pizza I have ever had in my life! Tried Grottos on three different occasions to see if it was just me...... Nope....absolutely disgusting pizza!!!! If you think this is great pizza......well then you don't know what real Italian made pizza really is. I hate Dominos but will eat that before I will ever eat at Grottos again!

We stopped in after a relaxing morning at the beach for a quick lunch. Service was friendly and the pizza good. We are New Yorkers, so we love our pizza. We ordered a large pie, half pepperoni for the kids, and the other half classic Margarita. Fresh basil and mozzarella helped make that side of the pizza tasty. The kids had no complaints about the pepperoni side of the pizza, either. A good meal for a decent price, and very family friendly.

I love this pizza place. Every year we stop here at the beach and it never disappoints. There is an arcade attached to the restaurant and the kids love to hang out there while we wait for the food to arrive. They have a take out area too. You can order your food in person or over the phone and sit in a very quiet bar area to wait. The caprese salad is wonderful but i don't know if they use local tomatoes. The service is consistent. If you're looking for great pizza, wings, cold beer and a place that welcomes families, this is it. The have the ability to move tables quickly to accommodate different size parties which is great. you grotto!

I ordered Grotto Pizza this past weekend with my family. Unfortunately, I have celiac disease and require gluten free pizza. They put a regular pizza, not gluten free, into a box marked "gluten free". I ate a piece of the pizza and spent the entire night up sick! This was an absolute travesty and I almost had to go to the emergency room as a result.

  • Kyle D.

Disgusting, and expensive. We order a large pepperoni and a large cheese pizza, it was $34. The sauce was highly acidic and tasted like a can. The crust was dry and crispy like a crouton. We ate a few slices and threw the rest out. Never again!

  • Diane W.

This place was not worth the money we paid for anything. They advertise fresh mushrooms on the pizza and they were clearly canned. Sent back the pizza, and the steak sub because they were stone cold just like the french fries. Don't waste your time. Our waitress did the best to accommodate the problem, she was not the problem, kudos to her. The food was just not up to par. Ordered two salads the wedge salad and the house salad. Nothing to write home about. Everything looked like it came out of a can or was prefab. Nothing fresh. Very disappointed.

Average pizza in every sense of the word "average." Bland/cheap-tasting sauce, low-grade cheese, and that Pizza-Hut overall flavor. Had this for takeout tonight and was pretty disappointed. I will not be getting their pizzas again!

  • Meg P.

Bleh!! Horrible, awful pizza. Why would anyone go here when Surf's Up is just steps away with their yummy, fresh pizza & subs? Now just walk away..

  • Allison P.

If you consider yourself a pizza aficionado, or really like a good slice of pizza, you're not going to like Grotto Pizza. But your kids probably will. It's worth a try to at least sample from the local chain, but beyond that, better pizza is calling your name.

    (2)
  • Evan C.

Pizza was just okay. Salads aren't worth it. Gluten free pizza was very good. Service was very weak. Didn't prioritize the kids' food, and actually forgot it! The small arcade made the trip bearable, but otherwise we will probably skip this below average pizza shop.

Like other past reviewers have said either you love it or hate.....I like it, my wife has always hated it that is until this year....who knows maybe its an acquired taste but for me it just lets me know that im officially on vacation!! BTW, the kids love the chicken fingers...see ya next year Grotto

Taste alone... Grotto is a 5 for me. If I had to eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be Grotto Pizza. I am giving it a 3 out of 5 because it is pretty expensive. It would be one thing for the price to be what it is and for the pizza to be mammoth sized but it is just a regular pizza size. The other reason for the 3 is that the service at this location is often slow. In my opinion the best Grotto in the area is in Dewey.

    (3)
  • Tom B.

Pretty decent pizza but wayyyy to expensive... 40 something for 2 large pizza's plus tip? I think I'll go elsewhere.

    (2)
  • Tony B.

Either you love it or hate it. I think it's consistently good. Great place to take kids. Reasonable prices. Cheap beer. Usually a TV with sports is nearby. Pleasant staff and prompt service. Tough to beat for the price.

  • Melissa M.

We had 2 plain pies and a half buffalo chicken - half hawaiin pie. Buffalo chicken pizza was amazing. the Hawaiin pizza was bad. My friends did not eat it at all. And the cheese pies were good/ordinary. Service was good.

I've never understood the popularity of Grotto - but people love it. I find it usually to be greasy, expensive, and not made with great ingredients. Personally, I'd much rather eat at Nicola's, or a dozen other places on the shore.

    (2)
  • Steve B.

That felt like a scam. 2 medium pizzas (12"), $34. 1 pepperoni, 1 banana pepper & mushroom. $17 each for what is normally a personal pan pizza. If it was better than mediocre, I could understand. However, this was not the case. For 4 people. Rip. Off.

  • Adam B.

Over priced, bad pizza. Minimal choices in town and that's what has kept them in business after 50 yrs. Better off finding something else to eat.

  • Taylor F.

Pizza is very average here and don't know why it's so popular. It's probably name recognition and the most family oriented restaurant at the beach. Bring the baby because there will definitely be a crying one. One summer when I was here, the bathrooms were horrendous. Trash overflowing and no paper towels- the worst. This was also during the busiest time of the summer. This is when management needs to be on top of their game and take care of customer needs. Not acceptable in my book. Very average american beach restaurant.

Overpriced and greasy. How on earth was this voted best pizza? I don't understand the alternating cheese and sauce either.

Typical Pizza chain down the shore. Not sure why it I so popular since the pizza is mediocre at best.

  • Sarah L.

I used to go to this place a lot a few years ago at least once a week in the summer. And I recently went and their pizza tastes the same...greasy as ever; not dripping but still a little too much for me. I used to play air hockey at their little arcade area. Good pizza, good memories.

  • L C.

To be as objective and fair as possible, it's got to be the best chain pizzeria i have ever been to. That is not saying much when you compare Papa, Domy's and Pizza Hut. I am not sure what the other locations are like for prices but $15 for a 16 inch PLAIN pie with no TOPPINGS is way too expensive, even if it's right on the beach. This location is NOT on the beach. I did try their lobster bisque which was alright but the lobster pieces were disintegrated in the soup but at least it had a nice kick to it. Gelato was a bit icy and too pasty but weren't too bad. Bottom line: if you like predictable upscale chain pizza... Grotto is your place but if you desire real gourmet pizza with real quality ingredients (i.e. NJ/NY pizza), good luck finding that in southern Delaware because i am not sure if it exists.

  • Bob E.

Friends, take my advice...avoid Grotto Pizza. I have been vacationing here for 40+ years. I am not a pizza snob who only likes NY or Chicago, etc. Frankly I like 95% of pizzas out there. Grotto, has really lost their way. They used to be a decent (above average) pie, many years ago. I rate the taste at a 1.5. The price/value is .5. Over FIFTY DOLLARS for (2) two topping pizzas? c'mon, seriously? I will NEVER flush my money down the toilet like that again! Goodbye Grotto! AMF

Grotto Pizza is a Delaware institution. They are a chain located only in Delaware with one location in Ocean City, MD. If you are going here expecting New York pizza you will be sorely disappointed. I must admit that during my first visit I hated the taste. However, the only note I can say to this is that it grows on you. I highly recommend their hot chicken wings and broccoli bites as appetizers and their gelato is AMAZING as a dessert. Having said that there can be variations in service and quality from location to location; this one is among the best in the state.

  • John S.

The pizza here is worse than Mama Celeste.. I don't know where they get their cheese from but it tastes like glue. I've had better pizza at dominos. Service is friendly, beers are very cheap, and it's fast. Okay for kids without tastebuds, I guess?

  • Tanya G.

I went here years ago, but my hatred for this establishment has resonated so deeply that I felt the need to warn others (especially New Yorkers) to STAY AWAY. Whilst vacationing, my family and I noticed the countless Grottos that were scattered throughout Delaware, and continually saw lines out the door at all of them. We soon found out that Grotto's has tragically brainwashed Delawarians into thinking this is good pizza.... The Crust: More resemblant of a large water cracker than cooked pizza dough, this crust is stale-tasting and delivers nothing but crunch. The Sauce: Tastes and looks like it's straight out of a tube of tomato paste. The Cheese: Sparse and flavorless. Blindfolded, I would have had no clue there was cheese on this pie. A slaughterhouse of Italian-American cuisine.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
