After getting over the fact on how beautiful this town is, I managed to peel my eyes off the surrounding snow covered mountains to grab some dinner at this location. I was happy to see that they did organic - I ordered myself the veggie burrito platter, which consisted of the burrito, two sides (black beans and veggies for me) and a salad. Wow! This was quite a lot of food for what I paid (~$10). It was one of the better burritos I've had in my travels.

My family and I loved sitting outside and communing with the other families and dogs. Food is great, but it has slipped a bit since it was a one window shop with only tables outside. Still, how can you go wrong eating good food under the stars of Telluride.

The other reviewer said this place was a bit expensive; I'm guessing they went there for dinner, because breakfast prices there are quite cheap. The breakfast menu is extensive and varied, and the dishes (as the other reviewer mentioned) are deliciously wholesome. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were PHENOMENAL. Everyone in our party was stuffed and satisfied and raved about their dish. I can't wait to go back to Telluride and eat here again!!!

went on the advice of locals and was disappointed. like other reviewers we thought the food was bland and pricey for what we ordered. the service was adequate but their coffee and cookies are fantastic. best coffee we've had in town and we've tried all the coffee joints on main street in telluride.

Had a great pork burrito for lunch. One of the few places open during off-season. The map shows this place as being outside of Telluride, but it's right on the main drag in the middle of town. Not cheap, but it's Telluride.

They need a 3.5 star rating for this place. Good service. Pretty good, fresh Mexican food--but definitely on the bland side. Burritos were good--but barely bigger than an egg roll, which for $8 is probably fair for a ski town--considering that it comes with beans & rice or a salad. Extra half star for the free chips and salsa bar.

when i first came to telluride and told people i was from california, they challenged my experience with mexican food with La Cocina. It was worth the challenge because not only was their food deliciously wholesome, but they even supported the local organic farms in the area. the last thing i ordered from there were their beer battered fish tacos, and that came with rice, beans, and a salad. they also have all the chips and salsa you can eat. they offer a fresh mouthwatering variety of chipotle and salsa verde. their chips are not just baked, but seasoned as well and there is free sour cream! the downside of this place, like many other telluride eateries, is that it is very expensive. my meal ended up being about 15 dollars, although i only was able to eat half and save some for the next day. i went on a not so busy day, and they got my order wrong. i think usually they do things pretty well. maybe that day was not their day. their tortillas are freshly made every day and very very very tasty.

We stopped in for dinner and ordered their special, which was beef short ribs. It turned out to be a little bland and very fatty. But in general, the food was not bad. The service was good, and the prices were right. I'd go back and try something from their main menu next time.

when I lived here my buddy worked at this place. needless to say, I was here everyday for different dishes....this place is great....the food is cheap, the service fast and the people who own is totally local. free range chicken, organic veggies when available, nothing better for the price in this box canyon.

Worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. The chicken was boiled and gross. Never ever ever eat here. Had to send food and it was worse the second time out.

Fresh, tasty and dare I say, "healthy".... Mexican food right in the middle of Telluride. Free nacho chips and a salsa bar too! I had a small rice and bean burrito platter and it was not small. It was stuffed with rice and black beans, topped with a choice of red or green chili sauce (I chose red) and smothered with tasty (if a bit over-blended) guacamole. The salad and veggies on the side were flavorful and fantastic. A solid choice for lunch or dinner.

Lucas catered a party for us last night. I've had many parties before last night. I have never gotten so many compliments on the food. He and his staff are amazing. Wish Lucas could clone himself and have a restaurant in Atlanta and Lexington KY. He is not only a fabulous cook.... But he calmed my nerves from the moment he stepped in the door. Anyone looking for a caterer need not look any further! Thank you Lucas!

The chicken taquitos were delicious (and gluten free!) with the corn tortillas being thin and light. Their chips and salsa are gluten free as well. My husband had the Posole and loved it. The mixed green salad with their lime cilantro dressing is fresh and a few steps above most side salads with jicama, carrots, pea shoots, red pepper and cojita cheese on top. They use organic ingredients which is a plus.

Wow! This place really earned its 5 Stars from me. How amazing the Gluten Free Enchiladas were with Green Spanish Whole-grain Rice and Anasazi Bean, i just can't tell you. I almost ordered the gf blue corn waffles because those sounded amazing also, next time and Yes, there will be a next time. I know alot of reviews complain about it being over priced, but i really thought it was worth it. My Alex and I appreciate good food, especially when they have gluten free options, and alot of their products are organic and very fresh tasting. They have a chips and salsa bar that you can serve yourself, great selections. I also had a latte that hit the spot. Everything was top notch with us, We will be back when we visit Telluride again.

Really good lunch! Carne Asada tacos and cheese enchiladas with red and green sauce were outstanding. Fresh salsa, free chips and outdoor patio that was dog friendly. If eat here again!

A must visit on any trip to Telluride. Fresh, tasty, casual, mexican place. Lot's of healthy (and unhealthy :-) ) options!. Fresh juices, nice salads, great soft tacos. A winner. Only downside is it can get crowded, but people are friendly and will share tables and if weather is nice there is an outdoor patio in the back.

  • Karen F.

In my opinion this place is over priced for the quality of the food. I was going to order nachos and the cashier/cook pointed across the room saying that I could just go over and get them and they'll bring out my "filling" which was your meat options. I opted out for taco and it was a mistake. What I thought would be Spanish rice was plain brown rice with a possible cilantro mix. The beans looked old with cheese thrown on top. The "tacos" were just corn tortillas with guacamole smeared and some "fillings" with a ton of lettuce and cheese. Their coffee was old the only milk they had was heavy whipping cream. The only thing that saved the meal was the Izze drink I had just because they had no association with it.

So glad I tried this place! It's crazy good, and healthy. It's also got a nice relaxed atmosphere.

One of the few dog-friendly patios around!! Great food. The patio is more of a self-serve area, which is why they allow dogs there. We are veg and The Corn Tamales, vegan platter and quesadillas are all fabulous! They also have a food truck next to it that has falafel and smoothies. Great place!!

Great Mexican food! Friendly service and a fun atmosphere, free chip and salsa bar. Some of the best chili rellenos I have ever had!

So we were on our way out of town and we really wanted to be sure to try La Cocina De Luz before we left. Unfortunately, I think our takeout order confused them a little. The short version: the food was pretty delicious despite the fact that we didn't really get what we ordered and had a hard time getting anyone's attention to help is out. First things first, it took me nearly 10 minutes to get the attention if the woman behind the counter to grab my takeout order despite being the first person in a steadily growing line. This can be mostly attributed to the fact that no one seemed to be interested in standing at the cash register for any length of time. I will say that their shredded chicken was really tasty and despite my burrito only having chicken and cheese inside (despite an order that included green chile, lettuce, tomato, rice, beans, etc) I thoroughly enjoyed it. We also got a chicken tamale which was awesome, an enchilada that would have been good if they had added the red and green chile sauces like we asked, and a carne asada taco that was pretty average. As far as the sauces go, I would say that the red chile is far superior to the green chile. However, if you get your food in true New Mexican style (Christmas!) you really can't go wrong. In the end, the food was good, so I don't want to penalize them too much, but the service was rocky enough to shave off a star. Again, this could totally be due to the fact that we got take out, so go to La Cocina de Luz, sit at the restaurant and enjoy a really solid New Mexican meal.

Some of the best most fresh Mexican food I've ever had! All you can eat chips and salsa which was very tasty:) Will definitely be going back!!

  • Cliff W.

This is a no-frills place, but the food is great. (At least the Tex-Mex dinner food is; I can't speak to the complaints others have had about breakfast.) You order at the counter, the help yourself to salsa and chips, and a glass of water. They'll bring your food to your table. The steak tostadas were especially good.

    (4)
  • Rhonda S.

Huevos rancheros were just average. Ordered over easy and whites were really runny. Boyfriend got same and a lemonade and a whopping $27 breakfast total. Not impressed for the money. Maybe it is just the Mexican in me but I had higher expectations. The only good thing was the chips and salsa which were awesome.

  • Anne L.

The best Mexican food I ever had!!! A lot of their products are organic and tasted so fresh. We got lunch with my husband: we both enjoyed the enchiladas :) My husband had a big shot of wheat grass for only $3. I will definitely recommend this place to everyone!

  • Tyler L.

Cute little spot with some great guac. Rocked out with the gauc out. I think overall this place was a bit expensive for what you got...maybe it is because it is Telluride. This felt more like a taco stand than restaurant...large order of guac, two tacos, un pacifico, $35. Steep anywhere but Manhattan. I will say that I did like the place and it was a great ending to a hike through the Telluride mountains. My advice to "la cocina de luz"? Play more "no apagues la luz".

We hired La Cocina De Luz for catering at our recent wedding's rehearsal dinner. The food was amazing and plentiful and, in retrospect, we wished we had used La Cocina for our wedding reception TOO! Arranging catering with Lucas, the owner, was beyond easy. He responded quickly to emails, assured me that everything was set and didn't require a deposit or walk-through, etc. (which was great for a destination wedding). We had them provide an expanded menu of their basic enchillada dinner and it was great. Apps: Chips/salsa/guacamole (tons of it!) and green chili and brie quesadillas. Buffet: their amazing salad, beans, spanish rice, three types of enchiladas, chile rellenos and tamales. The food was amazing and everyone loved it. We held our rehearsal dinner off-site and outside and the La Cocina team was adaptable, prepared and did a great job. The other benefit of using a local caterer like them is that when food started running low, they were just a few blocks from the restaurant. The price was very reasonable and fair and for the quantity and quality of the food, we were really happy. Needless to say, La Cocina de Luz is a great option for catering-- we highly recommend it!

Customer service was great. Everyone loved the food especially the shredded beef tacos. My food was a little cold but I didn't say anything as the rest of the table seemed happy and didn't want to spoil the mood. Salsas all spicy but so fresh and so good.

  • Kimbra K.

The food was very good. It was nice to order with confidence that everything on the menu is organic. Good vegan options. It is a very casual environment with no frills but, mmmmmm, great food.

I'm not sure why I thought this place would serve up a good breakfast - maybe it was because it was relatively well-trafficked. The crowds were wrong on this one. It is true I shouldn't expect a place in Telluride to serve up Mexican food on the same level as the average Phoenix-area Mexican joint, but I wasn't even expecting authentic Mexican food. I was just expecting reasonably delicious food. The Migas burrito sounded excellent, with its green chiles, corn chips, feta, and scrambled eggs. I had them add bacon, because any good breakfast burrito needs some meat. $3 extra - so $12 for this burrito. Was it a $12 burrito? Absolutely not. The migas mix was virtually indistinguishable from plain vanilla scrambled eggs, besides the presence of some green chili. This was like a $6 burrito from one of the shacks in town, with a scoop of avocado on top. The horchata was even more egregious. At $4, I was expecting something a little better than some almond milk with a dash of cinnamon. Mexican horchata is made of rice, not almonds. The best horchata I have ever had cost me $4, and it had cantaloupe, pecans, and strawberries in it. And I got much more of it. In all, I paid $17+ for a pedestrian breakfast burrito and crappy horchata. That's how much I paid for an amazing breakfast in La Jolla, complete with actual table service.

This place serves the only mediocre food I've eaten in Telluride. Be prepared for passable Tex-Mex cuisine. When I went, the meat was bland, the side of vegetables was overlooked and mushy, and the beans had been rendered into pure paste. The manager made a big deal out of offering "homemade chips and salsa," (which was self-serve), but isn't that common at Tex-Mex restaurants?

    (2)
  • Jon S.

Just ate here. I'm from Denver so used to Wahoos etc. I thought the food really sucked here. And was very pricey. I had the tacos. Couldn't pick them up, feel apart. Chicken was very salty. Steak taco was barely chewable.

    (2)
  • K M.

Don't bother. We went for Breakfast. They took over an hour to make one egg-bacon breakfast burrito & one plate of migas and charged us $38. We noticed they served people who ordered after us. When I went to cashier to ask about our food - he said he would go look for it. Then about 5 minutes later brought out our food - the migas & side of refried beans were cold enough you could put your finger in it. I didn't want to wait another HOUR for new / hot migas & I didn't want to think about eating microwaved migas. SO I said just take my plate back. Well they didn't even offer a refund or anything. So I paid $12 for a plate of migas that I didn't receive. AMAZINGLY poor customer service.

So glad we stumbled across this place today. Not only did we enjoy breakfast burritos (just simple egg and cheese) green sauce or red sauce on the side, also served with refried beans and potatoes. (Too much food!!) I also tried a fresh squeezed carrot juice, very good. We also came for dinner! I had a tamale (excellent) and a very delicious and fresh side salad. The veggies were so fresh and it even had a little feta sprinkled into it. Chips and salsa were nice to have, but the chips were just a tad too salty and we didn't care for the seasoning sprinkled on them. Salsas were great. We went for a little hike near the water fall and on the way back to our hotel, stopped for a bite of delicious ice cream. My son of course dropped his and I believe it was the owner who spotted it and went out of his way to get him another without us even asking. How nice was that?:) I definitely recommend this restaurant!

  • Jen H.

If you spend over.. I think its 5or$10$ you get free chips and salsa. BARGAIN! I always enjoy everything I get here. It usually consists of tacos and a mexican coke. And, of course, some chips and salsa!

    (5)
  • Christina S.

I don't even know if I can say its mediocre. The best thing I had was the side salad. It's way over priced for the quality of food. $16 for a carne Asada burrito is pretty expensive even in Telluride and not worth it. Go somewhere else. The cart vendors are awesome.

    (1)
  • Travis T.

I've only been here once so but i did not like it. The good: Free chips and salsa bar! (Try the green salsa) The bad: The guacamole is pre-made and comes in a bucket (the bucket was on the front counter while I was ordering). The refried beans are flavorless. The chicken wasn't seasoned. The ugly: The food is mediocre, not home made, and not worth your money. They need to make the guacamole fresh from scratch. They need to make the beans from scratch and use lard and salt (authentic). They basically need to get cooking in and stop relying on pre-made ingredients. Skip thus restaurant unless / until they start trying.

The worst Mexican food I have ever had. There is one word to sum up the whole experience: shit. I haven't been able to stop farting since I ate here. Couldn't have been worse

This probably isn't the sort of review that the management had in mind after placing signage at the register that implores customers to share only their favorable impressions of the restaurant on various Web sites, but I would be doing a disservice to the Yelp community if I were not forthright. It's been a couple of years since I've eaten at La Cocina de Luz. It was morning and the popular breakfast spot down the street was crowded and my mom and I were hungry, so I thought I'd give this place another go. After the whole line-counter-number-table thing, we got situated outside and waited and watched as two tables that ordered after us got served. Frustrating! I was excited when my huevos con machaca finally arrived after following up with the food runner. (For those of you that don't speak Mexican breakfast menu, that's a tantalizing mix of eggs scrambled with shredded beef, green chile, tomatoes, and feta cheese, served with red or green chile sauce). Given that my tastebuds have nearly always been underwhelmed at La Cocina, I played defense and ordered red AND green chile sauce. The plate looked gorgeous. How could something with this much color not deliver? The moment of truth, and Marvin Hamlisch came to mind: I felt nothing. I was hard pressed to discern which sauce was which. After my aspirational visions of a fabulous barbacoa, the shredded beef represented a missed opportunity, contributing only a periodic stringy interlude to the eggy mass. For a Mexican restaurant, it's not a good sign when the beans stel the show. Poor Telluride, for this is truly food with no soul, no corazón. In the southwest, that's nearly treason. Who thought there would be a day when I would long for Sofio's?

I came here with friends for lunch during my day off from skiing for the week. This place is a really cozy, warm and authentic little Mexican restaurant in the heart of Telluride town. Coming from New York where Mexican food is always available, this place really impressed us. Their vegetables and food was all locally sourced and fresh. We had salads and burritos and finished all the food on our plates. It's self-serve, so don't plan on coming here for anything fancy, but it was a great quick lunch which left us full and happy.

    (4)
  • Michele W.

The beer offerings seem very limited. We had 2 tacos: pork and steak. The flavors were good but not that impressive. However, the ingredients are organic and very fresh. Though, the Chili Rellenos are a must try! Crisp chiles with gooey cheese topped with red or green sauce. We got Christmas(red&green)mmmmmm

  • Lucia O.

I probably have eaten here too often for only living in Telluride for a summer, but the food is really good and fresh, and they have a lot of vegetarian options (and a vegan plate, which is amazing). The prices are kind of ridiculous for a Mexican place without real table service, but this is Telluride. There's a back patio that's bigger than the small front patio, and it's very dog friendly.

    (4)
  • Evan A.

$14 for a burrito and sides? This place had to be worth it...and it was! After a night of drinking my friend and I came down here and I had the steak burrito with a side of beans and rice. OMG! The steak was cooked perfectly, nice and juicy and the homemade sides were a great compliment.

    (4)
  • Juliette W.

Eh. The food was decent, but seriously overpriced. I had the enchiladas and the green chili was pretty watery. My husband loved the chile rellanos, but he's easy to please. The rice doesn't have much flavor but the beans were relatively tasty. The chips were good but didn't love the salsa flavors. Overall $35 for two plates of mediocre food was not worth it. Likely won't be back again.

Get the Carne Ensada Enchilada with green sauce. I wish I would have ordered two. Delicious. The salsa bar was great. One of my favorite places I ate at in Telluride. Quick service and friendly staff.

Others claim to be the best value in the city, but this one actually is. Plus it has organic juices, and even wheat grass shots. 2 enchiladas -- steak and pork -- and a shot of wheat grass for less than $20!

  • John B.

Mexican and vegetarian food lovers delight. Really tasty and fresh food in a self-service format. Cute in its own way with a varied Americanized and authentic Mexican menu items with vegetarian and health food choices (even wheat grass and authentic Mexican Coca Colas). Friendly staff. Appears to be where the local young adults dine.

My boyfriend and I found our way in here oh a whim because we were hungry and we saw they served breakfast To say the very least, we were underwhelmed. They were outrageously understaffed, the two or three staff members spoke little to no English, consequently - service was extremely slow While we sat amongst the fly-ridden front room, we noshed on the free chips and salsa- not bad! I loved the green sauce. When our food arrived, my boyfriend was extremely disappointed- His pancakes were extremely undercooked- the center was completely doughy! My vegan plate was average, nothing special, honestly. The fresh squeezed orange juice was pretty good, but honestly - better breakfast joints in telluride.

My favorite Mexican food in Telluride! All of the food is exceptional with high quality ingredients you can taste. The Chicken Burrito with Green Sauce and a Margarita is my death bed meal. Thanks Lucas for all of the amazing eats! The Best Marg in Telluride!

  • Nolan C.

Frickin terrible. I about barfed when I got my cheese enchiladas. Cashier was so annoying. Don't tip her because she's a bitch. The chicken was pink. The pico tasted like fish. The cheese quesadilla was the best thing...how hard can it be to mess up a fricking cheese quesadilla?! I'll answer that.... Not hard at all. It was an all around terrible experience and I hope it goes out of business before anyone else gets diarrhea.

We've eaten bere for years on their charming patio and have never had a bad meal. Excellent pulled chicken tostados and the best green salad, loaded with organic fresh jicama and other veggies. Consistently lovely servers. Top place in town at any price. All our friend we've brought to it agree.

Do yourself a favor while you are in Telluride and eat breakfast here. They stop serving breakfast at noon so drag yourself over before then! I have never had lunch or dinner here but I can imagine that it is delish. This restaurant uses fresh, local and organic ingredients and you can definitely taste it. I ordered the Huevos Motulenos with my eggs over medium and both the green and red chile. They put green on one and then red on the other because it comes with 2 tortillas which are more like a tostado. Amazing flavor and filling! Portion was perfect and while you wait for the food being prepared, there is a salsa bar with fresh tomatillo and house red salsas. They also had a very appetizing pickled jalapeno side. This place gets busy, prepare yourself for a line. Easily, the best breakfast I was able to find in Telluride.

ABSOLUTELY IRATE!!!! The ice cream man needs to get his head out of the clouds and into the ice cream stand before it closes. He is rude rude rude and unreliable. DO NOT COME HERE!!!

My father and I came here for breakfast last weekend. This is a little walk in, order at the counter, grab a number and seat yourself type place. They had signs up asking customers to please bus their own tables yet simple breakfast plates were around $11 bucks each? Seemed a little over the top in my opinion. The best thing about breakfast was the salsa bar. Looked to be an all you can eat smorgasbord of chips and salsa. The salsa was AMAZING and the chips tasted homemade. I would come back here for the chips and salsa alone. We both decided to get the green chili omelet. It came stuffed with chilies and cheese with potatoes and refried beans on the side as well as some fantastic toast, which I found out is made locally by a bakery in town. The omelet was dry and over cooked and the beans just flat out tasted bad. I didn't like them at all. The potatoes were nicely seasoned, but not crispy enough. I loved the bread, but like I said, that came from another location. I wasn't really too impressed. It was just OK. I'm looking forward to sampling more of what Telluride has to offer. I hope I have a better experience at the next place I try.

I am so sick of good places going downhill. La Cocina is an excellent example. Used to be unique; a great hybrid with fresh ingredients and interesting tastes. Now the quality of ingredients has slipped, service is poor to atrocious, and all our favorite dishes have been dumbed down. This seems to happen a lot in hip mountain towns especially, but it sad whenever it takes place.

The little note inside the napkin holders claimed that the breakfast at La Cocina de Luz was "yummy" because they use only local organic eggs. I think they're missing the point. Local foods taste better because they can be picked at the peak of ripeness and still make it onto your plate without beginning to spoil. Organic food tastes better because it doesn't use pesticides and gives people a warm fuzzy because it's more expensive. I am not someone who believes in organic food, but because it's typically tied to attributes I care about - like locality and freshness - I go for it. But you still have to cook it well, and the migas-scrambled egg mess I received was not, featuring overcooked eggs, a bland green chili, unimpressive potatoes, and a bevy of cheese. Mostly cheese. Combine this with the relatively low overhead of having customers bus their own tables and get their own drinks, and you wonder why they're struggling so hard to reduce their overhead. Luz certainly deserves some credit for being one of the few places on Colorado that offer a proper breakfast menu, but the experience was a pretty big stumbling block during a great streak of restaurants I visited during my time in Telluride.

This is a fantastic restaurant that serves healthy Mexican inspired food located in the heart of Telluride. The food is consistently delicious and most of the produce is organic. We have eaten here for years and never been disappointed. I love the field greens salad with shredded chicken. It has a sprinkling of Mexican cheese, a homemade dressing that is delicious and is a plentiful serving. Chicken tacos served with green brown rice and a salad is another favorite. The servers and staff are always friendly and helpful. Better yet, the prices are reasonable which is a real find in Telluride. You order at the counter and it is delivered to you. Margaritas, wine and beer. Nice art on the walls, outside seating available and views to make your heart stop! A wonderful place to frequent!!!

Very good Mexican food. Local fresh ingredients. Caring staff meal for 2 was $55 which is cheap in Telluride.

We eat Mexican food (both Tex-mex and southwestern mex) all the time and I can honestly say this was some of the finest red chile/green chile stuff I've ever had. Telluride is a town that prides itself on organic foods. I get it, to some extent, but it also makes me roll my eyes a bit. This joint, however, proves that local, organic ingredients really makes a difference where it matters... in taste. I had the chile relleno, which was the best I've ever had. Carne asada burrito was equally incredible. Rice and beans were more frou-frou then I'm used to, but were delicious. My wife's enchilada was good but not knock-your-socks-off good. In the spirit of the surreal, we ate outside on the patio. My wife went inside to go to the bathroom and I promptly buried myself in my iphone. I looked up, and there were 20 little finches standing on my wife's plate, pecking away at her leftovers. They looked like... angry birds.

Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner - you can't go wrong. The service is fast & efficient. Order at the counter & get a number & your food is served up pretty quickly. The breakfast menu consists of your standard breakfast burrito, chilaquiles, migas, and a few other items. The blue corn pancakes & sprouted wheat waffle stood out to me. I ordered the sprouted wheat waffle which they warned me would seem "undone" in the center due to how the sprouted wheat cooks. It was mushier than your typical fluff, non-nutritious waffle, but delicious with syrup bananas & strawberries. The breakfast burrito was excellent with the green chile -- good spice! For dinner I tried the posole ... which was definitely one of the best posole dishes I'd had. I ordered it with pork and it was enough to share ... I took it back to the hotel and had it for breakfast! Their margaritas are about the same price as their entrees ... but they're worth it. Great kick, delicious flavor. The 'Better' was just as good as the 'Best'. I thought the prices were fair ... the food was more than worth the price. I'm happy to pay for good food & service that isn't being served from a mega chain restaurant.

Fresh tasting Mexican food with plenty of options for everyone. There isn't any waiter service - place your order at the counter, grab your number & find your table. They have a chips and salsa bar that is included with a $5 purchase & has a few different types of homemade of salsa to choose from. Entrees range from $10-$15 & they have a surprising number of vegetarian options, which was much appreciated. Note: they have Mexican Coca-Cola here, which I prefer over regular (even though I don't normally drink soda) Give it a try! You might be hooked.

Food was ok but the prices I thought were outrageous. Small glass OJ for $4 and a mediocre breakfast burrito for $11 just really got to me. An ok place...

Stopped by for an early dinner place is quaint and staff is super friendly and helpful. We decided on two burritos with shredded beef and tamales . Service was quick and we enjoyed the free toritllas and salsa station. Great place for some quick mexican food. Food is fresh and most is organic.

Yum! We loved La Cocina de Luz on our recent trip to Telluride and ate there as often as we could. Great food, good margaritas, and super yummy ice cream. Very kid-friendly, order at counter, grab a table near the front, and enjoy the fresh air. Only miss for us here was the horchata which was undrinkable, but everything else more than made up for it!

Soooo good! I always get a chicken burrito with green sauce and a side salad

This was a great casual dinner spot in Telluride. There is no waiter service - you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. You can help yourself to a free self-serve chip and salsa bar while you wait for the food to arrive. We added a $7 side of guac - very tasty! Entrees run $10-14, and the lack of table service makes for a very reasonable dinning experience for a ski resort town. After a week of many $10 bowls of chili on the mountain and burgers or other form of ground beef at night, my dining mates and myself were craving fresher fare. La Cocina fit the bill and we all enjoyed the bright flavors and fresh ingredients in our dishes. My Field Green Salad was delicious and I loved the lime cilantro dressing. The extra $3 for chicken was well worth it, as the pulled rotisserie chicken was very moist and rounded out the salad. My friends' chicken totstatas and steak enchiladas were delicious. Another friend enjoyed her La Cocina Chop Salad. I would definitely go back again if I am able to make it back to Telluride.

We love this place. Every time we come to Telluride we like to have at least one meal here. We even had our wedding in Telluride and had La Cocina cater the rehearsal dinner. They did a wonderful job. Definitely not your traditional Mexican food!

This place is fabulous! I have been eating at this joint since it was the small, three table, corner place in the back alley. I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal here. Lucas and his crew are incredible. The only downer is the price, but they do use almost all organic, local goodies, and it is Telluride after all.

A great place to go for an inexpensive (for telluride) mexican experience. Tables were dirty-this brings a star off any review of mine. Your supposed to clean your own table, but some people do it better than others. A dirty rag on the floor next to me. Nice trout lithos on the walls. Noisy, kids running around not a place for a quiet romantic dinner. Had the salad with chicken very good taste, a few pieces of bad lettuce in the salad. Because of my husbands meal its a three-his chicken enchilada and pork enchilada was wonderful as well as the vegetables and rice on the plate. Maybe the best thing is to get the food to go.

I've been here for breakfast, for dinner and they also catered a wedding I attended. The salsa bar is amazing. I love the sweet corn tamales and the rellenos were also very good (no wonton wrappers), best coffee I've had in that town. People who are complaining about food prices need to get real. Not only is this a resort town, do you realize how far away the nearest grocery stores are and how many times per week they are required to go in order to ensure fresh, not to mention organic, ingredients? The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that I do feel the drinks are too pricey.

I really wanted to like this place but everything was REALLY bland. I got a chicken and pork taco, my gf got enchiladas. There was just no flavor. I dumped on some salsa from the salsa bar just to taste something. I was pretty disappointed. I noticed that they encouraged "esteemed" customers to rate them in Yelp, Urban Spoon and Trip Advisor, which always makes me skeptical of such ratings.

Came here on a whim when my husband and I felt that we had cooked one too many camping dinners in the rain as it looked like one of the more affordable restaurants in town. Besides the prohibitively expensive margaritas, I felt like the menu items were pretty reasonably priced as the portion sizes were quite large, and also due to the fact that most of the ingredients used were local and/or organic. They had a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. Both my husband and I ordered the veggie burritos, each with a different sauce; we both thought that the green sauce was better than the red. The lime-cilantro dressing that came on the side salad was soooo good, as were the garlic roasted vegetables. And the salsa bar...how have more reviewers not mentioned it? It comes with every order: all you can eat chips and salsa with a variety of homemade salsas and standard chip toppings to garnish them with (sour cream, jalapenos, etc.). Fun!

I was looking for a place to eat with my kids for breakfast and we saw their menu in the window that said "waffles." We go in and two of my kids order waffles ($8.50 each, I think). When the order comes out, we get two orders of blueberry waffles, which my kids won't eat. Assuming it was a simple mix-up, I politely approached the counter and discussed it with the man who took our order (short, stocky, gruff). He pointed to the menu that was taped to the counter that said "blueberry waffles" and told me very bluntly that the counter menu was the "official menu" and that it was my fault for ordering them. I asked if he would simply remake me new waffles without blueberries. I even offered to pay for the cost of ingredients. He indignantly refused unless I paid another $19. What a jerk. The place is already over-priced for what it is, without having to deal with this nonsense. Based on this and a previous experience here, all they care is profits and not customers. There are much better and more customer friendly restaurants and values in Telluride for breakfast (Maggies, Steaming Bean, Butcher & Baker Cafe) and lunch & dinner (Brown Dog Pizza, Floradora, Smugglers, Oak Fat Alley and others).

You get a lot of food! It's expensive but, it's Telluride. ;-) I would eat here again and try something different. I had a taco, Chile Rellano, beans and salad. Very good!

I arrived at this restaurant later in the evening, around 8:30, and went to order the posole, only there was no more. Instead, my mom and I ordered the vegan plate ($12). Since this vegan plate was to also come with posole and since there was none to be had, I feel like we should have gotten a discount on the meals, but we did not. Otherwise, the food itself was fantastic and the vegan plate a great combination of flavors for someone that does not enjoy Mexican one bit.

I was pleased to find vegan food while walking through Telluride. They were also able to accommodate my gluten intolerance. We got the vegan plate (which came with a salad, so I'd double check to make sure the dressing is gluten free for those who need that!) as well as an order of nachos without cheese. I do believe some additional vegetables were added in for us, and it was very tasty. I also got a side of green chili sauce which went nicely with the nachos. The flavor was excellent, the price seemed Telluride-appropriate, maybe a little high, but finding vegan food in the area seems pretty bleak otherwise. One last thing to note, we also got the vegan ice cream, they had coconut and chocolate almond, yum!

Being from El Paso I didn't expect authentic Mexican food. HOWEVER, this place was pretty disgusting. My sister ordered the tamales. They tasted like Christmas tamales where the masa is made with sugar but it works because the stuffing is pineapple or pumpkin. This was supposed to be a regular tamale but it was disgustingly sweet. My dad got the enchiladas and the assortment of veggies that they stuck inside did not work. I had the tacos (one skirt steak and one pork achiote) which were only sub par. The refried beans tasted of sugar on all three plates. And the rice was unlike any other rice I've ever tried. The salsa bar had a warning sign that the salsa was spicy so eat it at your own risk. That was the lamest warning ever as the salsas did not have any flavor. The pico de gallo did not taste like it had any chili in it whatsoever. It tasted only of tomatoes, cilantro, and onion. One highlight--the dressing that comes on the salad is delicious. It tasted like a cilantro citrus dressing. Overall, sweet and waay overpriced. I think the only reason they stay open is because of the heavy tourist foot traffic. I knew it was gonna be an interesting experience when I saw that they spelled "jimaica" (hibiscus) as "Jamaica," mon.

I ordered the huevos rancheros with green sauce and they were delish. I also ordered a latte but they only had whole milk and hemp milk. I politely declined and thought nothing of it. The gentleman behind the counter ran out the door after we sat down at our table and it turns out that he went to buy skim milk to make me a latte! Talk about great customer service. Good food, good value.

Nice little restaurant in Telluride, order at the counter. Margaritas were strong but good. Food was good, but pricey for what you received. I get that Telluride is not a cheap place, but I think this place uses the cache of being organic to jack the prices up a little. All in all food was good and simple, just know that the good taco trucks back in Houston do this kind food for 1/5 of the price.

Great lunch while in Teullride. Staff was super friendly, and the gentleman working the counter commented on my chivalry. Sat outside and have to admit this was the best mexican food I have had since leaving San Diego. The Carne Asada was delicious. My girlfriend had the carnitas, and it was just as good. definitely go here in Telluride at least for lunch.

Excellent meal, reasonable (for Telluride) prices. Not all that authentic, but very vegetarian friendly, and delightful food. Can't argue, and definitely the best meal we had in the city.

I remember going there, waiting in line, seeing Colin Meloy at the water station filling up his water bottle, ordering a burrito, eating the free chips & salsa while waiting for my order, watching the staff mix up some pretty stiff margaritas, but I can't actually remember eating my burrito.

One of the worst places to eat in Telluride. Bad, tasteless, bland food, small dining area, rude customer service, overpriced, dirty atmosphere. I would never come here again. Not sure if I'd call this Mexican food, because Mexican food is usually good.

Wow, what a place! Hands down, best coffee in town. What is it with the coffee in Telluride anyway? Most of it is weak, acidic, pretty bad. It's fabulous at this friendly Mexican restaurant, worth multiple visits just to partake. They have a great breakfast with lots of options: eggs (any way) with corn tortillas, huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos, and much more. Very tasty and fresh. All orders come with beans/cheese and the best breakfast potatoes I've ever eaten -- crispy outside, flaky inside. The service is cheery (you order at the counter, they deliver to your table) and the vibe is good. A must-do for breakfast, and I've got to believe lunches and casual dinners are great as well.

"Burrito Heaven in the Rockies! It's very authentic too." They've expanded and now are accessible from the main street. There's more seating and space to hang out. Their burritos are fresh and the real salsas are perfect additions. I walk over in my ski boots for a quick lunch.

I really like this restaurant and always come back when in town. Everything is super-fresh and made with high-quality ingredients. I especially like the Tamales but other dishes are delicious too. They have free chips and salsa and the Margaritas are good too!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
