The Black Steer is a local steakhouse in Loveland Colorado that has been around since 1966. Having said that I'd be curious to find out when exactly they decided to replace croutons with chex mix. I was so amused by this random change in my garden salad I took pictures. Surprised as I was by that interesting touch I found myself more amused by the random slice of watermelon that accompanied my pepper steak. Their claim to fame is the pepper steak but I'd rather come here to eat pie. I asked for a medium rare cooked steak and what I got was a medium well with slight pink center. It was still very edible but the fact that I ended up putting A1 sauce on my bites just tells me it's just an ok cut of meat. I think I needed more fat on my steak. I also chose to eat this steak with homemade fries which were very dry despite their promise of being homemade. Even the kiddo I was with who was stealing these little puppies didn't like them so much. I think the best thing I had here besides the western/frontier ambiance (charming) and the amusement of eating with a shrieking little one was the pie which is also claimed to be homemade and is pretty damn good. Get a peanut pie although I usually choose banana cream over all things and that was also pretty good. They're both creamy and sugary and promise to raise your blood sugar fast in a satisfying manner. Overall it's a nice American establishment and worth a trip for pie at the least.

The atmosphere was the only positive thing about this experience. This was a birthday celebration planned for 6 of us. We had made reservations. When we arrived we were told they forgot to reserve our table and that it would be about 20 minutes. We did see at least 3 other tables empty and with reserved signs but we went to the bar area to wait. 20 minutes later we were told it would be another 5 minutes or so. After waiting 35 minutes we were taken to our table, 3 feet from the front door in the middle of the walk way! I feel we should have been offered a free drink at least , but we were not. The service was very slow. My companions waited almost the entire meal for their drinks and one never did get his. We also requested 3 separate tickets at the beginning of the meal. When they came there were things on the wrong tickets plus additional entrees not ordered at our table! Last but certainly not least... The food was not edible. My husband had to dismantle his steak sandwich as it was so tough that it was impossible to eat the way it was intended. He tried to cut it but finally gave up and ate a few grease soaked fries. My beef tips had a liver taste and the gravy was gray and just awful. Inedible. This is my first negative review on Yelp and I hope my last...
