This place makes my drive home from Breck via 285 totally worth it! In addition to avoiding the mess on I-70, I now know I can eat a crazy good meal after a day of snowboarding. My husband had the brisket sandwich with potato salad ($9.95) and he added a sausage link for a buck when it was offered - who wouldn't! I had the pulled pork with greens ($8.95). I am no BBQ expert nor did I need to be to enjoy my meal. I ate off the huge pile of meat topped with coleslaw (I don't even like coleslaw but theirs was so fresh and tangy and crunchy from the veggies that I loved it) before I even put the top bun on and picked it up. It was overflowing and saucy but not greasy and not overly messy. The meat was juicy and tender and perfect - no chunks of fat for me to bite into which is why I'm not always a fan of BBQ meats. They smoke their meats and make their sauces in house. I loved the sauce on my husband's sandwich because it was a bit spicier than mine. Our buns were the egg style and lightly toasted. No crappy grocery store buns here. His huge side of potato salad was delicious but my greens were just amazing - soft, savory, slightly spicy and in a smoky, tomato-y broth that I slurped up right out of the bowl. Looked like collards and kale to me and I can easily say it stole the show from all of the delicious meat we inhaled and that is saying a lot. We didn't leave a single bite of food in our baskets. There were a few other people in this tiny restaurant and one was raving about the root beer float so I'll try that next time. They also had pulled chicken and sausage links as well as ribs. You can order family style meals with a few pounds of meat and the sides of your choosing. What a feast when you're craving meat. I normally don't, but Mason's sure makes a strong case for it!

Look. If this is what you call good BBQ, then you are obviously clueless. The food had absolutely NO taste or seasoning. I've had WAY better Q. I hate to give bad reviews to a local business but it's way overpriced and just not that good. On the plus side, the lady taking orders was friendly.

Ordered the split chicken which was barely cooked. The iced tea was like water and the greens were too sweet. Would not recommend this "Texas style" BBQ!

Good bbq, not spectacular but good. Definitely a bit on the pricey side- I was a bit disappointed with the portion size for my ~$12 plate. I could have eaten two of them easily, and I am not an especially big guy by any means. The staff was friendly. Don't think I will stop here again.

We quite literally stumbled across this place when we found out there would be no other food places for many miles. So glad we gave this gem a try! The woman behind the counter was so friendly and gave me a compliment within the first few seconds of waling in the door. The menu is simple, but perfect. I had the German Sausage Sandwich and it was AMAZING! The bbq sauce is so tasty, I wanted to buy some in a bottle right then and there. Super friendly and quick service. It's worth trying, or going out of your way for.

My expectations were not high when I walked in here. Hungover, exhausted and barely able to catch my breath due to the altitude (the town is at 10K feet), the last thing I expected was classic, impeccably prepared Texas BBQ. First off, the owner is about the sweetest woman I've ever met. Bubbly, happy, and entertaining, if the food hadn't been terrific, I would have been fine because of how nice she was. I tried the sausage, the ribs, the brisket and the pulled pork. Sausage was definitely the highlight, in my mind. Custom made for this shop by their supplier, it was spiced beautifully and then expertly smoked. Brisket was terrific, and perfect for me. Some of my friends thought it too fatty, but it was just how I liked it. Pulled pork had a little too much sauce for my personal taste, but was delicious all the same. Ribs were a bit disappointing, but that has more to do with my general dislike of St. Louis style ribs. Last, but not least were the sides. I had the cole slaw and the greens, and I have to say that both stand out as the best examples of the genre I've ever had.

Traveling from Boulder, CO to Crested Butte, CO and stumbled upon Mason's. Had pulled pork sandwich, potato salad and a Mexican Coke, Heavenly. Exceptionally clean inside which counts when you are dropping in on a roadside joint.

Excellent chicken and pork BBQ... accompanied by homemade potato salad, slaw, pie. Friendly owners. What a treat.

This is perhaps the best BBQ spot in Colorado.Perhaps it's just me, but I've always found the barbecue scene in Colorado to be a bit lacking-- Until I found this place. A friend and I had driven around for about an hour in an attempt to find another place and decided to try this, despite our dispassionate view for Barbecue joints. I was a bit nervous about the sauce, as I'm both gluten and dairy free, but the owner of this place assured me (with a massive smile) that I was safe and even made some recommendations. We didn't wait long for our food and I was blown away by the flavors, the quality of the meat, everything. Even my friend, who hates barbecue, was blown away by the quality of everything and ended up scraping the sauce remnants off of her plate. This is THE place to go if you're up for a really long drive or if you're in Fairplay.

Was on my way back to Denver from fishing at Antero reservoir when we decided to check out this hole in the wall looking BBQ place in Fairplay. It was well worth the stop. Some of the best BBQ I have had in a long time. 3 of us got the small family meal that consisted of 1/2 # brisket, 1/2# pulled pork, huge smoked sausage link, 2 sides of beans, potato salad, and bread. Could barely finish all of it. The brisket tasted great and the sausage was awesome. Didn't even need any bbq sauce for the brisket. The pulled pork was also very good in a mustard based bbq sauce. The baked beans were very good and not exactly what I expected when I ordered baked beans, but they were a great surprise. Multiple types of beans and a spicy sauce. Not over powering spice, but a very good bite. Potato salad was the weakest part of the meal, but by no means was it bad. It just didn't stand out like the brisket and beans. This place is well worth the stop if you happen to be in Fairplay, Colorado. Service was great and very friendly. Will definitely stop there again next time I am driving through the area.

Great meal at Masons BBQ today! Thanks to yelp for recommendations, friendly service, the family meal was perfect for the four of us. The owners were friendly and entertaining!

The pulled pork at Mason's is truly exceptional! I really love BBQ, and this is some of the best, and most unique, I have ever had. It's worth the trip from anywhere to taste a Mason's pulled pork sandwich. The sausage is really tasty too. For dessert my favorite is a root beer float with cinnamon ice cream. The owners of Mason's are so friendly, the service is great and the food is always cooked with care.

the food is good but they are stingy with their meat. I don't mean on the plate of food that you order either. I am referring to the meat itself. I said I would like to purchase 1 lb of brisket and the fella behind the counter said and I quote " i bet you would ", he then told me that he only sells it at 1/2 lb at the time, but wouldn't sell it to me... they only want to sell their sandwich plates for $10. They don't want to sell you their meats alone.

Apparently, this place just opened in November. I lucked across it just before closing time while driving along 285 towards Denver, and I'm glad I did. I'm always on the lookout for good new barbeque, and this place goes on my "Best in Colorado" list (which is short, unfortunately). The brisket sandwich with a link of sausage was excellent, and the meat was so flavorful and tender I didn't even need the side of sauce it came with (I used a little anyway). I took a bowl of pozole home, which was loaded with melt-in-your-mouth pulled pork and had some really nice layers of flavor. I'm sure the other meats are just as good, and I'll be sampling them the next time I'm there. The service was fast and friendly - one of the owners took the orders, and was genuinely excited to share her food with everyone. I'm giving Mason's 4 stars instead of 5 because the one side I tried, the mustard potato salad, came up a little short. The potato chunks were way too big, and were still a little raw in the middle. The other sides I saw the other guests eating looked great, and I'm excited to come back and try some and hopefully up this rating to the full-fledged five stars. There's always room for more great BBQ in Colorado, and I'm happy to report that Mason's in Fairplay is a worthy addition.

We LOVE this place! It's small and easy to miss, but worth the stop for good bbq. It seems like they've taken the best from each region of the US and brought them together in little ol' Fairplay! I particularly like the pulled pork and the brisket, but I've never had anything there I didn't like.

  • Mary J.

I've tried this place twice and both times the meat (brisket and ribs) was dry. They are skimpy on the sauce, which they charge extra for. The sides I've tried (baked beans, cole slaw, and potato salad) have all been flavorless. Prices are a little steep too. They use styrofoam containers for everything, so they obviously aren't concerned about their impact on the environment. The owners are very friendly, which is the best thing about this place.

  • Shawn R.

not bad considering its in the middle of nowhere....the pulled chicken sandwich was pretty good except the burnt bun....the beans were alright but it was more like meatless chili instead of baked beans....kinda expensive, all that and a coke was $13

pork didnt taste smoked. potato salad tasted like it came from sams club or something. owner was nice. pozole was not what i know of pozole. maybe should have said pozole verde and it would have fit that description better. wouldnt go again.

Worth a stop! You may pull into this small restaurant thinking..."really?" but you will leave thinking, "oh, yes!" The motto for Mason's is Made With Love and this BBQ joint is definitely doing that! We drove through Fairplay on the way home from a mountain adventure and we were pretty hungry. Two of us shared the Two Meat Platter, getting the brisket and split chicken. The meat was cooked to perfection. It was so tender and perfectly seasoned. For our sides we got baked beans and stewed greens. Those baked beans were killer - some of the best I've had. Unlike some varieties the sauce wasn't too thick, the beans weren't over cooked and the flavor was fantastic. The stewed greens were equally as good with a spicy kick! You can tell that food here is homemade and made without shortcuts! I left happy and full!

This place is awesome. The woman running the joint knows her stuff. She's got the place on lock, and runs her kitchen well. She's also friendly, kind, and genuine. Crystals and rocks give this place some character. We got pulled pork and some of the sides, and ate there. The owner knew all of the patrons by name, and knew if they were just passing through to CB, or if they were locals in town. She recommended the posole, as she only does it on weekends. I should have taken her up on it, since the food that I did have was incredible, but I'm not always in Fairplay on weekends only. Yes, I'm coming back here. It's a great, solid meal at a fair price in Fairplay.

Great local BBQ stop. Potatoes salad was dope. I had German sausage my husband had pulled pork both delish! Very friendly woman who took our order. This will be our new food stop when driving from Denver to Telluride!

Being from Texas the BBQ wasn't what we were expecting. They didn't offer beef only pork and chicken. We didn't care for it all but the friendliness of the owner was superb.

This place is pretty good, worth a stop if you are in the area and hungry. The owners are really nice folks and very engaging which makes you glad you stopped in. I have only had the pulled pork and the meat had a nice smoke flavor and it was a generous portion. If I had a complaint it would be that they sauce the meat before they serve it and for me I would like to have it on the side. There was too much sauce on it for my liking and it took away from the meat. I don't know if they serve all the sandwiches like that or not but in the future will ask for it on the side. Other than that I thought it was tasty.

This place deserves way more than 5 stars! We have been in at least 4 times since moving to the area! The pulled pork is delicious, the sausage, the brisket, the stewed greens, all of it is amazing! My favorite is their cole slaw though! Huge chunks of chopped cabbage instead of shredded cabbage and it has this really great tang! So good! Definitely stop in if you're going through Fairplay!

The owners, who are from Texas, should know how to make a better sauce for their ribs than what I have tasted. It has too much brown sugar and vinegar. the pulled pork, again, too Much vinegar also the BBQ shack does not, and is not planning to sell, BEEF BRISKET , for the _Entire SUMMER_ ! Its a Tourist Stop, the corn was over cooked, the greens were very good, the slaw was crunchy, which is important to me, white bread buns. Its Not Texas. On a sweet note The Root Beer & Cinnamon Ice Creame Float is the only redeeming grace of THIS; Mason's High Country BBQ .

All I can say is wow!! The owner Criselda is a funny and kind lady from Texas. She stopped by every table to see where they were from and what they thought. The baked beans are the best I have ever had, hands down!! The food is real, and you feel like you are visiting your family. We will be back before we head back to okc.

Great sausage! Not a fan of the coleslaw (usually prefer a creamier sauce) but potato salad and brisket were awesome!

  • Cindi B.

Stopped in for late lunch on a weekend and found the place pretty busy. The owner was friendly as she took our order, saying, "everything's really good." We had a mix of sandwiches and sides. The sausage was a hit, potato salad pretty good, and the rest was tender but with a heavy mustard flavored sauce, including the coleslaw. I lean towards either sweeter or lighter sauces on my BBQ, so I can't say I'd eat those again. Sadly, they were out of brisket when we were there, which would've been my first choice. So, considering the limited choices in Fairplay, this is a decent option; but, I wasn't a fan of the sauce on the pulled meat or coleslaw.

Really good BBQ! I would definitely go again the next time I'm in the area. I loved everything but the chicken was so delicious and juicy. Recommend stoping by and checking it out :)

Never overlook the insignificant looking restaurants. This place packed a tasty punch. The owner was hilarious - part time chef, part time jewelry maker. When I asked where the bathroom was, she said, "It's around back, but you need to go that way because my dog's on the other side, and he'll eat you alive." The food was tasty. I had a pulled pork sandwich, which is one of their more popular items. It came with a generous serving of pork. The sauce was good- a little on the sweet side. I ordered a side of stewed greens, which included kale, a bunch of other ingredients, "and a whole lot of love." Also very flavorful.

A must! Had the posole to start; then ribs with a side of stewed greens and corn. Everything was very flavorful and delicious. We will stop here again. Also, we will leave room for dessert on our next trip.

Really great bbq, they really go out of their way to make the food their own. If you're looking for a place where you can get some bbq that's different from the standard, the sides here are very well made and a new flavor from your boring chain bbq places. Of course, the meat is what's important, and they do just as much to make that their own special thing. Will be coming back here.

Wow, what a little gem this place turned out to be. Reeling from NYE, my roommate and I stopped here since the only other option within 50 miles seemed to be Subway. Sure glad we did, as I finally discovered brisket in Colorado that is truly done right. Smokey, juicy, and tender - it was delicious. The owners are from Texas, which explains it all. I asked how long they smoke it, and I was told 12+ hours. Awww yeah. The sauce seemed pretty good too, but I didn't use much of it - meaning the meat passed my "sniff" test. This place is about as hole-in-the-wall as it gets, but worth the stop. A bit pricy, but it's the closest to Texas BBQ brisket I've had (Lulu's in Louisville is another good and closer option, but this was better). Friendly folks doing BBQ right. If only it were closer to Denver.

Well it may look like just another BBQ shack on the road side, but beware, this is the GEM you have been searching for. Really, when you taste the greens, I am talking about the greens, there is a symphony of flavors going on in your mouth. And ask about how they are made and it is amazing all the steps and part she puts together to make what i am sure are the finest greens on the planet! The BBQ is excellent and made to order. I wish this place was closer, I would be a real regular, real regular! Stop and enjoy this one, it is on the unique side of life.

This place is awesome. Driving back from Breck on 285 recently, we found ourselves starving in an area without many choices. We didn't want to drive back through Breck and we didn't want Subway, so we stopped here. It's certainly not fancy, but it has tasty food and the women who works there is hilarious. You order at the counter and wait for your food (very quick), all while being entertained by the decorations and staff. Our sandwiches were very tasty and reasonably priced, and we were in and out pretty quick. This is definitely the place to stop if you're looking for something unique in the area.

Mason's is always our first stop in town when we go up to our cabin. The pulled pork, German sausage, and split chicken are all excellent! We've also tried the pozole, stewed greens, and beans, which are all great. Very friendly service from Criselda, the co-owner with her husband/chef. As for the people complaining it's expensive, a split chicken is $5.95. This lasts for four meals for my kids. It's not expensive to eat here.

What a good little find this place is. No frills, just good BBQ. The dinning area consists of about 5 tables and maybe 20 seats but is loaded with good home cooking and hospitality. The pulled pork tasted as good as it smelled and with a topping of slaw it just added to the goodness. I really enjoyed the baked beans as well, not overly spicy but just enough to to let you know you were eating baked beans. This place is worth checking out if you're in the area and have a taste for BBQ. When I saw a handful of locals in there ordering the usual, I knew I stumbled into a good BBQ joint.

One of the best places in South Park. They absolutely nail it on the brisket and sausage. Proper Brisket is hard to do right and they do it right! Also highly recommend the Posole! Seriously amazing... worth going to have even if you dont like bbq. Love the beans and greens as well. Of course the family who runs the place are awesome... a couple of South Park characters themselves! Makes this one of those places you must stop in to try if passing through.

I was in town to judge at the Second Annual South Park Kick Ass BBQ Festival and got a couple friend rec's for Mason's and decided to pick up some ribs and brisket to take home to family. They were very nice and sold me three racks of ribs and a 1/2 pound of brisket even though they were expecting to be slammed from all the events happening in the area. The brisket was cooked perfectly although I would prefer a little more smoke or seasoning it was still good. The ribs though I'm sorry to say were disappointing. Overly salty and undercooked (not raw but tough) with some decent smoke but no discernible spice or rub. The sauce that they came with was okay with a notable molasses presence but not much else. We ended up foiling the ribs in the oven for an hour at 350 degrees with a mix of the sauce and some apple juice and then crisped them up on the grill. Better but still salty. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and upped the star count because they were so nice and a one hit/visit review is never very reliable. I'll probably try them again when there aren't so many events going on up that way and re-review them then.

My sister and I were just driving through on our way to Denver and wanted a good place for lunch. Saw the other reviews on yelp and stopped here. I got the chicken bbq sandwich and my sister got the pulled pork sandwich. They are big sandwiches, full of meat. It came with a side, we both chose potato salad which was amazing. I wish I could make potato salad like that. If you are looking for bbq, this is a great place.

We read all the reviews on yelp and decided to go try this joint out. It's was an amazing encounter! We loved the place! Chriselda (owner) was awesome! Energetic, kind, and hilarious! We walked out the door smiling! Our smiles were Not just because of Chriselda, (which is hard to beat) but the food was great! We're from KC; which is a great BBQ place and Mason's cured our culinary homesick hunger!! Ribs were tender and the BBQ sauce was tangy and spicy!! Perfect! To top it off, they serve vegetarians. I came to this joint thinking I was going to snack on sides and watch my friends eat, but Noooo, they have an amazing veggie sandwich that was full of spice and taste! That's right!!, vegetarians can eat a tasty full meal @ Mason's!! Also to boot, she has a cool rocks, crystals, gems collection that she incorporates into her handmade jewelry! (Good taste in style) You can browse/purchase them while you wait for your meal. I cannot truly express our experience in this review. Truly a treat we will visit again!!

This Florida girl LOVES LOVES LOVES this place. The first time we went here was with family on our way to Crested Butte this past winter. We went again to CB for Labor Day weekend and hit this place on the way in AND on the way back. The three times I've been, I was always greeted with a smile & warm welcome. Last time I was there, I had the pleasure of meeting one of the owner's, Criselda. She had me laughing and engaging in conversation. I also met Mason, their son after who the restaurant is named. Having worked in a restaurant with family, I really appreciate the scenario. As for food, we always do the three meat plate and get their German Sausage, Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket with their stewed greens, baked beans and posole. Their posole is excellent-- has a slight heat to it that was so nice after some chilly nights in the mountains. If you've got room for dessert, I highly recommend their peach cobbler with cinnamon ice cream- DELISH! This place is a true gem. Do yourself a favor and try them out and suggest all your friends to do the same-- you'll be a hero :) Being from the South, I do miss authentic BBQ, but this place is truly a treat that takes me home.
