This is our go-to for local food. Good flavor, big menu, reasonable prices and a super nice staff. My favorite is the smothered chicken burrito for $3.50. No beans or rice, so I can splurge on a hot sopapilla or carmely flan for dessert.

The food was decent. Nothing special, just decent. This was our first time eating at this location and we probably won't go back. When we arrived and were seated, 5, yes 5 different people came to get our drink order. Every time I said that it had already been taken, but obviously no one communicated with each other. Then I noticed that only the first bowl of chips and salsa is free. I will never understand why some places do this. Who wants to go to a place where you have to pay for more chips and salsa, and who eats just one bowl? The chips were not good at all and there wasn't enough salsa to last. Then we ordered our food. My husband ordered the molé, but they were out of it. Ooooookay. I ordered a combination plate. When it arrived, my taco was on the same plate with everything else, which means it was soggy and had to be eaten with a fork. Also, not one of the 5 people who tried to take our drink order ever offered to refill them. Clearly, this wasn't a great first experience for us and we will not be going back.

First time here, and I was impressed. Food was amazing and the menu is quite large. Highly recommended.

Stopped by for lunch on a Saturday . . . the hostess said I could sit wherever I wanted, but the waitress directed me to a table right between the only other people in the restaurant. This is kind of a restaurant pet peeve of mine (number 1 being, "had good service, but waiter disappeared when I wanted the check", and number 2 being, "lack of beverage refills"). I know they try to put people in specific sections, or they are limiting the square footage they need to cover (distance walked), but come on, let me sit where I want to unless there is a good reason why I shouldn't. Within 15 minutes, I was the only customer left, so it seems funny that I could not have had my initial pick of tables. The hostess was friendly, and came by several times to make sure everything was okay. She was definitely the highlight of my dining experience. The space this restaurant occupies is pretty nice. It has high ceilings, is rather clean and well lit, and the tables are not all crammed together. They offer a full bar along with the food. The table salsa and chips were average. They make the chips in-house, but they seemed a little stale to me. The salsa has a lot of tomato sauce in it, and oregano was the top note (not my favorite in a salso), but it is acceptable. I had the tacos (menu said "taquitos") de carne adobada. This is three corn tortillas with marinated pork served with lettuce, pico de gallo, cilantro and fried onions. Each taco had a small slice of avocado, and I asked for a couple of lime wedges. These were "okay". There was nothing particularly bad about them. There were no unpleasant flavors, they were not overly greasy, the tortillas were not soaked through so as to fall apart . . . So, it is hard to put my finger on any particular issue. Maybe having gone on the Federal/Sheridan and Colfax taco tours I am now more of a "taco snob". These tacos just did not "pop". The awesome pork flavor I wanted was not that apparent. Or perhaps, at $9.25 for three tacos, my expectations were too high. I also ordered a side of rice and refried beans. They were fair (not great, not exceptional), and the serving was of moderate size. But, they were overpriced for simple "rice and beans". I also was charged for the pico de gallo I requested as a "special salsa" (this is typically free any place I have been. I just drank water ice water (and the hostess was outstanding at refills). Yet somehow, with tax, my lunch came to almost $18! This is what I ordered, and this is what I paid for. But, I could not help but think that for 1/3 to 1/2 of this price I could have had six to eight tacos at "TacoMex 1" on Colfax, and I can guarantee they would have be outstanding. So, the staff was great, the space the nice, the food was decent, but $21 including tip (with no beverage) for all this seems somewhat disproportionate between what I paid for and what I received.

For a Mexican restaurant in the middle of horse town ELIZABETH this place is not bad. I have gone here over 5 times and have never had a problem. The food is good and the people who work there are nice, locally owned. Chips and salsa are always fresh. I have had the Chile rellano burrito, bean taco, and cheese enchilada, all very good. Only thing is that they need to take out the time and money to fix the girls bathroom.

We have been eating at Los Volcanes in Elizabeth for many years. Their salsa is delicious and so is their breakfast! You can't beat their excellent service.

I recently had a good breakfast here. I am a local but don't go here much. I ate here right before closing several years ago and had an awful meal. Yes right before closing food was cold. They do have good crowds though and I do know locals that think well of the place. They have been in Elizabeth for around 20 years, or so it seems. If they were truly awful they would not be in business. Elizabeth is a tough town to stay in business within because so few people. Give them a try and enjoy.

I've been coming to this restaurant since I was a little kid. It started out in Elizabeth and moved to Franktown for several years (in the same strip mall where Grill on the Hill is now). It moved back to its original location in Elizabeth about 10 years ago. When it was in Franktown, there was always a line. I think that is a pretty good sign of how great the food is. This is a beloved restaurant for many locals. And even after it moved back to Elizabeth, people in Franktown followed it and still eat at the Elizabeth location. Because Franktown and Elizabeth are small towns, it's not uncommon to run into someone you know. The wait staff and owners are Elizabeth locals and know their regular customers. Although I have moved out of state and may only be back in town once a year, I always make it a point to eat at Los Volcanes. The wait staff is always excited to see me and remembers my "regular" order. They always ask how things are going and what has been going on. I know several reviews so far have said that the service isn't great. Not true. The wait staff is very friendly, especially it you take the time to talk to THEM too. Also remember that it's a family-owned restaurant. They do their own thing. But the food is great. I've lived in Phoenix and San Diego, places known for their good Mexican food, and I can honestly say none of it is even on the same level as Los Volcanes. It doesn't even compare. Los Volcanes is my favorite Mexican restaurant I've ever eaten at. Anywhere. Period. The family is from Colima, Mexico and all of the staff chips in with the cooking. The servers make the guacamole (which is delicious and extremely fresh, ask for it!). The presentation is simple, but then again, this isn't the type of place that is out to impress or get Yelp reviews. We always order burritoes - chicken and bean. I've never been disappointed. We also enjoy the Bacon-wrapped shrimp (yes, it's rich and yes, you will probably have a heart attack afterwards), tostadas, tortillas, and green chili. They also make their own sopapillas, which are to die for. We take four home and heat them up for breakfast and eat them with honey. The fried ice cream is also awesome. They toss a bunch of toppings onto it and the shell is thicker than any other fried ice cream I've eaten anywhere else. I don't know what their secret is. Don't even get me started on the margaritas. The perfect blend to end a stressful week. The price is very reasonable. Still one of the cheapest sit-down dinners you will have.

Passing through town after an afternoon bird hunt and came across this gem. Salted Beer Glasses? Both of us had great meals and I would highly recommend. Very reasonable also.

Our visit today - not so good. I ordered the pork soft tacos and got the pork dinner which was very bad. Although the pork was well seasoned it was also pounded until it was 1/4" thin and then way overcooked until crispy. Parts of it were like bacon in crispyness. No one ever came back to ask how our lunch was after they dropped the food and the waitress who took my plate with a lot of uneaten meat left on it never asked how it was (two obvious server mistakes). They were also out of horchata. When we were cashing out and they finally asked how lunch was and I explained there wasn't even an apology. I think this was our last visit here.

Not great, in fact horrible! To be fair, we haven't been there in quite a while. My husband and I both got sick the three times we ate there. Yes, it took us three times to figure out that getting sick each time could not be coincidental; not signing up for more of that!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
