A great place for friends and red beers.

Great little place for a beer with a nice indoor/outdoor 'patio'. The beers with the lower IBU's I enjoyed very much...I'm just not into the bitter/sour beers. Service was very good, and staff is very friendly. Parking is a little tricky, as there is a lot in the back, down the alley and behind a fence, but if you follow the signs you should be able to find it.

What I like about this place is the vibe and the fact it's mostly open air whether you'd inside or sitting on either patio. Although I haven't seen a show they have live entertainment throughout the summer and the back patio looks like a really cool spot to check it out. As for the beer, I have been pleased with that I've tried. The impression I had is that it'd all be boring reds but they have been rather creative with their brews and, for the most part, I've been happy with them.

I didn't know you could do so many things with a red before I came here! It was a refreshing creativity in a microbrew! My friends and I came here and sat for hours on the shady patio. They also had a food truck parked out front when we were there, and the combination of food, good beer and shade was a refreshing way to spend a Sunday afternoon. It's in the more rural part of RiNo, but definitely worth the trek!

I am beginning to realize that I am a sucker for really nice bartenders. I went to BSB on a Friday evening. If you're planning to park in their parking lot (they have a parking lot -- pretty awesome), you may find the entrance a bit awkward and easy to miss (and dangerous to exit from due to zero visibility), so drive slowly as you approach. The place itself was not too crowded. We'd just been to Ratio down the street, and it was interesting the contrast between Ratio's crowd and BSB's. BSB seemed to draw in a more eclectic group of folks, not a single v-neck t-shirt or Patagonia trucker hat in sight! Did I mention that the bartenders were nice? Like super nice, in a good-old-fashioned-customer-service type of way. Since we'd already been to three drinking establishments that evening, my beau and I only stayed at BSB for one beer, which I recall was solid but didn't knock my socks off. My guy's beer was delicious though. I will be back soon on a live music night (go to their website for a schedule) and I will sample many more of BSB's offerings.

After passing by I finally stopped in. Im a Fan of colorado Red Ales. And of them all, I say a Rye is my favorite. The glasses are a little weird, but they say it helps with the aroma and the taste. Luckily I didnt spill any on my first sip. They didnt have a food truck this day in question, but the people still brought in free burritos. Which I paid for later, but they were good going in. They also have live music but i havent been on one of those nights. YET

Best brewery in Denver. Great beer, great atmosphere and even greater service. Have been going since they opened a few years back and I'll most definitely be a lifelong customer.

Stop 5 of 5 Black Shirt Brewing Company was on the top of the my to try brewery list for Denver and I am so glad we got to experience this place with beer connoisseur and Yelper Dale Z. Upon walking into Black Shirt I spotted a Johnny Cash poster and knew this would be a cool place. This was our 5th stop so truth is the memory got a little fuzzy. But I do know I ordered the darkest beer they were pouring and happily drank it. Jesse ordered a sampler paddle and enjoyed the variety of beers. Thanks Dale for showing us Texans some of the best of the Denver brewery scene.

It's about time I review Black Shirt. For some reason I've been holding out. For some reason I was going to stick to 4-stars. That was foolish. In a beer era where you have to do something unique to stand out, Black Shirt seemingly chose the toughest niche - only red ales. "How are they going to do that?" I thought to myself. How are they going to be sexy with a red ale? With saisons, rye, IPAs, and even porters - that's how. And they're going to do them really well. Combined well done brewing with a chill open air atmosphere, food trucks, a sweet new patio, and friendly service and bam - you have a place that you love to be. My personal favs are the Farmhouse Porter and Rye Pale Ale. The Farmhouse is smooth with hints of chocolate and just a tad bit of funk. The Rye Pale has just enough rye to know it's a focus in the beer, but it's also a great pale ale. The regular porter and red saison are both wonderful as well. And I got even more excited having seen barrels of past wines and spirits aging their already delicious brews. In all honesty, I haven't had a bad beer here, only tasty ones. Black Shirt has finally (and rightfully) climbed into my top tier of recommended breweries in Denver. It's definitely a destination in a never ending sea of breweries. Whether you like traditional or interesting, Black Shirt will deliver, and do it with a smile.

The brew here is really good, the only downfall for me is the location. They have great beers, great prices, and an awesome crew of staff but it's just a little farther from downtown Denver. They have tons of spots to park and lock bikes outside, perfect for the summer! The red ale IPA here is seriously fantastic! Give that a try!! The glasses here are truly amazing, the first time you go you'll wonder how the best way to drink from them is. A definite must try if you are in the area!

Nice place Not my fav in the area. Decent beers although most of them were not my fav style. Funny glassware. Good crowd with a nice vibe. Nice decor Service was fine. I might be back.

I have been to this establishment thrice and 2/3 experiences were great, but the most recent was almost awful and bummed me out. The first visit we sat at the bar a week or two after they opened and loved the service, the décor, the artwork and of course the beers! Who knew there were so many iterations on red beer? Also, they had a rad refurbished piano hanging as a bookshelf / coat rack. Neato! The second time, last fall we sat out front on their patio and had a full sampler and a great time. During the beerfest (first weekend of October) this year we went and they now have a parking lot in the back, which is great and they had the back patio open. The inside and front patio were closed off, which seemed weird for this important weekend. And the service was TERRIBLE. Pretty sure I got the wrong beer, I know I got attitude, and then they charged me three times (but refunded two, making for a messy bank statement). Plus, a friend of mine wanted to taste one to see if she should get a pint and they were rudely explaining after she tasted a small sample that it would be two dollars and that she didn't know what she was asking for. Really bummed me out, hopefully this was temporary (both the layout and the staff). This was an opportunity for them to really shine during GABF week, but they did not. I would like to return and have another great time, but am now not in a rush to do so. Nor will I recommend them until these issues are resolved. I am hopeful it will return to greatness and will update my review if and when that occurs. Cheers!

Fabulous dog friendly brewpub!!! Great atmosphere and incredible beer and friendly personal service. This is NOT a huge commercial brewpub....skip them and come here! Food is available from mobile kitchen parked out front and the food is fabulous. So far this our favorite place in Denver.

I really enjoyed Black Shirt. They have a nice lineup of red ales and a nice space to drink them in. The all-reds thing may be on the verge of being a gimmick, but it's a good gimmick, and here's the big thing -- they execute it well. Their beers are well-made and you get the sense that each one is what the brewer wants it to be. Service is friendly (at least on the fairly quiet Sunday we were there) and I'll happily return.

A cool & unique brewery, Black Shirt Brewing is my favorite brewery in all of Denver. The staff is awesome - they care about the beer so much that, if you ask, they'll go into lengths to describe it as well as explain where the idea for the brew came from. The owner even provides brew tours! BSB shows support for local food trucks by hosting them often, making food available right outside their doors. This is the first brewery that I had experienced that had Kombucha (local - Happy Leaf) on top, and suggested mixing it with their Red Saison. DELICIOUS. I'm HOOKED!

We came here this past Sunday afternoon and it wasn't too busy. Awesome beer, atmosphere, and service. The bartenders were extremely knowledgable about their product and friendly. Love the music theme and the focus on red ales. Can't wait to come back!

Updating my review to five stars was something I should have done six months ago. My very favorite brewery ever. The nicest folk, the best ambiance, and consistently great red ales. My go-tos are the saison and the pale red rye. I also sometimes throw the red IPA in for fun. Keep an eye out for some of their super limited seasonal releases. I was fortunate to get the first glass from their rhubarb hibiscus sour mash saison keg when summer began and am now waiting in anticipation to try their beet saison (I missed their first release this year). They have also been great for the neighborhood. This was a sad looking spot when we moved to the hood nearly three years ago and now it's a vibrant corner filled with with appreciators of craft beer. They are also just far enough north to make this a destination for people who are seeking out the good stuff and not somewhere that pedal riders/bar hoppers will accidentally stumble into. And if the crowd gets a little too obnoxious, the staff totally has your back. Black Shirt is a true keeper. We can never leave our neighborhood now.

Some really excellent beer. All red-ale based which gives it a unique flare you don't get at a lot of breweries. I had the flight and there was only one beer I wasn't a huge fan of (not that it was poorly made, just a very potent flavor) and that was the chai beer. A great spot for a weekend (or weekday) drink! My one qualm is that they only had prefilled small growlers, and I wanted a growler of beer that wasn't available.

  • Doug Y.

Black Shirt has grown on me. The first couple times I tried their beers I was afraid it was just a gimmick to only serve red ales. After I got over that and just tasted the beers for what they were I found a few that I enjoy quite a bit. The Ameircan Red IPA is my favorite and the fact that they are now canning it makes it even more convenient than me having to pop into the brewery to pick up a six. Well, actually I don't mind that much. It is a nice room and the staff is friendly and the slant glasses are cool. So yeah, I'm a fan definitely.

    (4)
  • Nat S.

They brew only red beers. They are very good and have carved out a definite niche in the Colorado brewing scene. My favorite beer I ever had there was the blood orange double IPA. If you are into the brewery scene, stopping here is a must.

Black Shirt has the nicest tasting room that I've been to in Denver. When I think of what a tasting room should look like, this is it. Now to their beers...they are good. They don't blow me away, they don't fit to a style, and they're not "unusual" so I can't say I've had anything too memorable. But they are tasty, and they are innovative in that they use the same beer backbone for each brew, but tweak hops, yeasts, specialties, etc. to get something a bit different each time. In talking to owners, their beers are evolving, and don't expect their batches to turn out the same each time. if consistency is you're thing you might struggle here, because the same beer could be quite different batch-to-batch. I need to get back here soon.

I really enjoyed this place; good brews and a friendly and knowledgable staff. They have a patio in the back and one in the front so it's great for grabbing a drink with friends on a sunny day.

What a find! This was my first time at blackshirt, and it easily rates a second return visit. Their specialty is red ales of one kind or another... be it a porter, saison, pale ale, etc. I had the red rye and it was delicious. The space is well sized with lots of standing room. Finally, the unique glassware has to be pointed out. This truly makes for a memorable pint.

  • Miguel L.

In a saturated neighborhood, this brewery consistently produces some of, if not the best, brews on the street. They only brew red ales but the variations of complex beers they create are eye opening. Crazy what one style can encompass. This is a must stop brewery if you're in Denver.

    (5)
  • Chris D.

I don't think breweries need a special niche to make it. My personal feeling is to keep it small, quality, and in a neighborhood that can support you. Black Shirt specializes in red beers and is not in my neighborhood, but they are damn good. Friendly, knowledgable staff, and a fantastic offering make this one of the better breweries and a competitive market. Now, would somebody please open a brewery near my house!?

The girlfriend and I visited last Saturday night after work. Parking was kinda confusing at first, but we figured it out (there's a lot out back). Black Shirt had two food trucks, a live band (on the back patio), and a new beer on tap. We ordered from one of the food trucks, and ordered two beers. The atmosphere was really cool, bartenders were super friendly. We got an awesome seat at the front of the tasting room and we enjoyed people watching while enjoying our beers. The patio is a good size and although the music wasn't the greatest, we had a great time. I would definitely recommend making a visit if you're in the neighborhood, and we will make sure to visit soon.

Black Shirt is tucked away in more off-the-beaten path part of RiNo, so on your first visit look closely or you might miss it. Once you get inside you find yourself in a brewery that feels more like a trendy restaurant than a brewery with it's decor and dim-style of lighting. Grab a seat at one of the high tops or a seat at the bar and then you will be greeted by the friendly bar staff. If it's your first time in you will get the run down of the whole process of the red style of beers and the unique shaped glasses. They also offer tasting trays, which is always a nice bonus if you aren't sure which beer to order. Out of all the tasters I sampled I like the sour red and the red saison the best. I opted for ordering a whole red saison and drinking out of the specialized glasses was an interesting experience. At first you kind of feel like you might pour it all down the front of you on your first sip but then it seems more like a normal glass after that. The beers were interesting for sure but all seemed pretty similar to each other. The service here was top notch though! I'm curious of what other red styles they have up their sleeves, so I will be back to check those out sometime in the future.

  • Madelyne S.

I liked the ambiance which was very cozy and creative. The glasses are unique too. However, I was not blown away by the red saison I consumed. It didn't have any outstanding flavor. If you're a big red ale fan this place is worth checking out since I think it's one of a kind in Denver.

This place has a real cool ambience. Everything has a story. From the reclaimed boxcar flooring used to make the tables and bar, to the letters b,e,e and r found in a field to the busted up piano hung on the wall repurposed as a coat rack and shelf, real cool vibe. I love the old school microphone heads used as taps! The owners obviously care about your time there and 100% about their product! I love the industrial feel to the area and would definitely return and will. Good job guys!!

I sampled three beers here a few weekends ago and loved them all - the red ale, the pale red rye and the red porter. In spite of all of their beers having red in their names, I was surprised at how different even just the three I tried tasted. I could not pick a favorite ouf ot those three, though; they were all delicious. Though it was my first stop on a brews cruise, I could have easily parked myself here for the rest of the day. I was sad to go! I loved the feel and style of the brewery but best of all, I think the people working here were the warmest and friendliest I have EVER encountered in a brewery before. That is not always the case, so I appreciated it. I left with warm fuzzies. Other things to like: the ability to buy not only little taster glasses, but also half pours for $2.50! Perfect for me. They serve water in cute mason jars. Their beer is served in really cool glasses (thanks Shea for telling me how to drink out of them properly!). They have purse hooks under the tables. They have glorious garage doors that open up to a sweet little patio. They were family and pet friendly. They're on a good food truck rotation. I'm so happy for them that they're growing and expanding and I can't wait to return to try a bunch more of their beers.

Red beer galore. The beer is cheap, the place is casual, the bar tenders tend the bar. It is in the gritty part of north Denver, which is undergoing a "revitalized" building spree in the industrial section of hipster-ville/gentrification boom. The outside patio is excellent in the summer, with food trucks. It is an alright brewery, but I don't think it anything worth screaming over.

The red ale project is unique and awesome! All brews are red with their own twist. No boring beers and all are full of flavor. Definitely stop by bsb! !

Nothing says get out and hit some breweries like a good snow storm, right? Yea, well that's what we did Saturday while it was coming down. I must say that we hit this one mostly because we were close after hitting a couple of others in the area. The name Black Shirt didn't really draw me to them. I was thinking it was a bit of an odd name for a brewery, but hey, who am I, right? We hit the place when it seems all the locals were stopping in to buy six packs bottled there. Figured it couldn't be bad, so we gave a few a shot. Tried the American Red Porter, which I found very tasty, and interesting to drink in their "specialty" glasses. The Amercian Saisson we tried and liked as well, and it seems that was what all the locals were buying to take with them. Will definitely make this a destination next time instead of a pit stop. Great atmosphere!

This is my favorite brewery, plain and simple. I knew Carly B and David P loved this place, but I didn't get it. Then I read Emily T's review and I knew I had to go. After reading an ode to a brewery that does nothing but reds, at some point, you just have to know what the hype is all about. My first visit was with the venerable Carly B and David P, as Black Shirt is in their neck of the woods. Since then I have gone back repeatedly. As proof of my fandom, I even purchased a T-shirt at their anniversary party earlier this month. The owners and servers are exceedingly friendly and create a happy environment. In addition to a friendly and warm environment, they have spectacular beers. A brewery that focuses on all red beers? Why is this a good thing? However, it is a wonderful thing when done well. I'm such a fan of the sour mash saison, regular saison and the porter. They often have seasonal beers or specialty brews too. Just go. You won't be disappointed.

Love this place... Great beer and I love the "Red" concept. Employees are always so nice and there are always a food truck out front. Try their BSB Red (Flagship Beer) and the IPA is really tasty and not overpowering (for those of you who are a bit put off by the IPA style). The only complaint I have is they are not open ENOUGH, i.e. not open on Sunday Funday?!? :( Be sure to check their hours, you could miss them (even on a Friday or Saturday night). Well worth working around their schedule to experience this great brewery.

After hearing the constant and many high praises of Black Shirt, I finally made my way to the RiNo neighborhood a couple of weeks ago. And not surprisingly, I've stumbled back a few more times to get my hands on more pints! Black Shirt is slinging nothing but red brews, which hold a special place in my beer drinking history. (The very first beer I drank after returning from my study abroad was a Leinie's Red!) So when I heard that BSB only creates reds, I was indeed intrigued. Upon my first visit, Carly B recommended that I sample the saison. And holy cow, what a great brew! My next two visits were for BSB's 1 year anniversary party and then for a recent Yelp Brews Cruise. And with each visit, I've tried something new: a Chai Red Pale during their anniversary party and their ESB during the Brews Cruise. ESBs are one of my favorite styles and BSB's was very enjoyable. As for the Chai? It was nothing short of masterful! I haven't had a chance to try out a flight sampler to get a better picture of the regular menu, but I will soon! In the meantime, I dig that BSB does half-pours for $2.50. This is definitely a great way to sample a few beers without going overboard. My only complaint, and it's quite minor, are the glasses. While they are very unique and I understand the purpose of smelling your beer while drinking it, I always manage to spill on myself a little bit because of the shape. It makes me feel like I'm two years old! Perhaps I just need more practice. Or a bib. In any case, Black Shirt is a great addition to Denver's beer scene and especially to the RiNo district north of the ball park. If you haven't visited yet, definitely turn on your GPS and make your way over to Black Shirt!

Love this neighborhood brewery. The sourmash has a different taste, one that I enjoy. The rye is probably my favorite so far. All of the brews are reds. The staff is great, the space is relaxing, the glasses are awesome and even the bathrooms are worth a visit. Seating indoor and out with different food trucks visiting on different days.

BSB is amazing. They've got great, great beer. It's a crappy location relative to other brewpubs, but their taproom is great. If you're like me you can use it as the eastern-most starting point for a bike pub crawl in Denver. I met some of the family who own and run the place, and they are not only talented at what they do, but super friendly, too. I'm happy to support this place and look forward to finding their beers making their way to more restaurants in Denver.

My favorite microbrewery in Denver with a selection of 6 to 8 beers on tap. All Red. All good, ranging from red saisons to red Indian pale ales to red porters. Aged. Nitros. You may think you don't like reds. Then go here and try again. I've brought here more than one friend who changed their mind about red beers.

  • Roy H.

Have you ever had a red porter? or a Red IPA? I havent until I came to BSB. Its a very interesting take on beer here..and very awesome. BSB does all reds. So that means Red Ale, Red Pale, Red IPA, Red Porter, Red Sour, etc. Dont be turned off if you dont like reds. I am personally not a huge fan of some reds but these guys really know what they are doing. The Red Porter is absolutely amazing! The Red Sour comes in as my second favorite. Not only does this place have awesome beer its in an awesome space too. The tables are made of reclaimed wood from train boxcars (I want to steal them they are so awesome). The theme (aside from red) is music based..the beer list is title NOW PLAYING, with beers listed as tracks. The glasses are the most unique I have seen..slanted so you can better smell the beer. Yes, you are supposed to drink out of the lower side. To top it off there is almost always an awesome food truck outside. Yum!

A five star brewery has to have it all. Most important, the beer (it is a brewery after all). BSB does takes a unique approach in that everything they do is a version of a red. Red saison, red sour, red porter. In beer mecca where breweries are spilling over each other, it's refreshing to find something unique. Everyone makes an IPA, but what do you do that's different? BSB goes for an India Red Ale instead. Malty and hoppy. That's what. Next, ambiance. Cool little place with ample seating in one of Denver's older and grittier, yet gentrifying, neighborhoods. The music was audible but not blaring. The talking was louder (when it was full) but not ear shattering. Mostly it was quiet so we could speak at normal levels. Then comes the staff. To be honest we only interacted with one staffer, who is also one half of the Black Shirt Brothers. Chad is a cool guy who peacefully described just about everything - the reds, the music theme, the black shirts. He's a soulful, philosophic guy, who, as he described, after 14 years of working jobs he didn't care for, was able to open an awesome brewery with his brother. There's symbolism in everything they offer and how they operate. Don't forget: they're closed on Sunday, because Sunday is for family.

Great red beers. Great staff. The place itself is quiet and there is always parking. When you go inside, the music is the perfect volume and it is never too crowded but certainly never empty. There is also a good truck-- great to keep you trying the beer!

This place is awesome! I am a huge red ale fan so I have been wanting to come here for a very long time. They have done so many thing with a red base, it's impressive. The environment was great, wonderful staff, music themed decor. Also, they had seating in the brewhaus! I'm a huge craft beer fan so I felt like I was sitting VIP in between the fermenters. They also had a Rolling Stones dvd playing on a screen. Overall, excellent experience!

  • David G.

I've only been to BSB a handful of times, but I enjoy the beer (especially now that they're canning) and the space. The only downside is that it can get busy (a natural side effect of making awesome beer). But the beer is top notch and unique. The space is interesting with a lot of character.

These folks know what they are doing. We waited a few weeks after they opened to go there, and man were we impressed. All red PPPFFFTTTTTTTTT, yes yes they are but oh so different from each other. Sweet, aromatic, tantalizing and now...well we are addicts. As of last Thursday they are opened Thursday thru Saturday. Perfection takes time, and i believe it with their beer. The glasses are unique and add to the taste of the OHHHHH so fantastic beer. The staff is so knowledgeable and really want you to enjoy every sip. The place is named black shirt mostly for Johnny Cash im sure. They play tunes not loud but not so soft its annoying, on a record player. you feel like you have walked into the past with a twist of the modern. A wonderful family feel and a mellow atmosphere. Be ready to float into a world that makes you feel like you have walked into a world when life was a little simpler and relaxing. Great place to hit for an after work pint or two for an unwinding. See ya in a few days BSB!!!

I really like this place. For old timers, like me, one of my fave breweries was Broadway Brewing Company. It was edgy cool with great food and beer. Black Shirt is a fun place in a cool location and they are making some great beers. i know some people say, "they only do reds?!" The amazing spectrum of tastes in the various reds is impressive. I really groked the sour. I look forward to my next visit.

This is a long-overdue review for what may be my favorite Denver brewery of the now-many Denver breweries. Their beers are always top-notch and delicious (my standard fave is the American Red Porter) , and the staff is lovely. I came once with a large group and one of the owners (Chad) gave us the most heartfelt brewery tour I've ever been on. You can feel (and taste) their love for their craft. Go to BSB!

Black shirt brewery is in the up and coming part of Denver, and they're doing a great job bringing life into the neighborhood!! Then space is nicely decorated, I especially loved the garage doors, piano on the wall, and microphones as tap handles. They had a food truck outside (cilantro truck) which was really tasty and went really well with my beer. My only complaint is that they didn't have much variety on tap. Everything was some version of a red ale or an IPA. Hopefully next time will be even better!

  • Rachel S.

This place rocks!! Not only is the service friendly & awesome, but they certainly know how to brew reds (obviously...) We were here for my fiance's birthday party - had a crew of about 16 people and we hung out in the "brew house." It was perfect -- all standing room, right in the middle of where the magic happens. I was blown away by the staff being super helpful - and my fiance loved the flight we got for him. Cannot wait to come back!!

Yes, I have been known to rant and rave about the ridiculousness of breweries that create only one type of beer (Black Shirt only does variations of Red Ales), but there is an exception to every rule. Black Shirt has quickly become one of my new favorites, between their warm and friendly tap room, great service, and really top-notch brew. Red ale has the range to create enough different types of beer, that everyone in your group will be able to find something to love. It's unassuming exterior hides a truly beautiful tap room with lots of well-crafted wood furniture and a pleasant design. Between that and the high-quality beer, awesome crowd, and knowledgeable staff, Black Shirt has become one of my new favorite tap room stops in Denver.

Great selection of red beers (like how they have two versions of each/most). Really have nothing bad to say about this place, bartendress was attentive and knowledgable, and the place has a cool atmosphere. Wish they excepted/ filled normal growlers, but I see where they are going with their system, and can't short them for it.

I'm one of the terrible few who does not find newborns cute. I'm the person who stumbles over her words when I say, "Wow, look at all that hair" because I simply can't muster an, "Aww, s/he is adorable." ...and then Black Shirt Brewing was born. They're not even a year old and this baby brewery is damn near perfect. Trust me, I'm not a relative, so I don't *have* to say that. It's just the truth; I'm smitten. BSB squashed my preconceived notion of what a red ale is or isn't. I entered their brewery as an unbeliever assuming they had pigeonholed themselves into a restrictive niche, but I was so wrong. They're churning out incredibly creative ales from a Red Saison to a Red Porter and Red IPAs. Everything I have tasted is delicious. The beauty of BSB goes beyond just their ales. The owners, a family unit, are people that you want to support. They're very friendly and if I was to judge them by the music they play and the sleek, salvaged look of their taproom, they're very cool, too. Since the husband and I are in the early, early, early stages of planning our own someday brewery, we tend to do a lot of brewery hopping, err, I mean, research. However, I no longer want to hop from craft brewery to craft brewery on the weekends because BSB has everything I'm looking for. Welcome to the Colorado craft beer family, BSB, you beautiful baby brewery. Really, I mean it.

Well, I'm not quite sure how the beer is but I will tell you the service is terrible. We waited 10 min while the bartender talked to someone else and looked our way occasionally. He was obviously to hip to serve us. we ended up walking out without ever getting waited on. These are the kind of things that shut businesses down.

When I picked hops at a local hop farm last summer and was chatting with the guys who were, "opening up a new brewery pretty soon," I kinda just brushed it off. Everyone is "opening a new brewery" these days and I just figured they'd be some little home brewer outfit. But when I started to hear all the buzz about Black Shirt, I quickly recognized the brothers, their story, and their "reds only" plan. When I finally made it in to Black Shirt, Chad (one of the owners/brothers) took some time to catch up and tell me about how things were going. Chad made sure we were all set with beers and talked to us about each one. Holy good beer, batman! Some may be skeptical about an "all reds" brewery, but these guys have found a niche that they really have cornered. Their Red IPA is so tasty and one of my fave IPA's right now. And their Red Ale, the original brew, is also so good. The Red Saison is good too, even for this non-saison drinker! The ambiance of the tasting room is awesome and even their bathrooms (with washcloths instead of paper towels!) are classy. I can't wait to see these guys grow and continue to crank out yummy beers!

I highly recommend the Red Ale. It is a smooth brew with toffee undertones. All beers come in a genius tilted rim glass so an easy, ergonomic pour into the gullet. I also enjoyed the nice touch of dried hops in the mason jar on each table. What the brewery may lack in space, it definitely makes up for in tasty beers and an even nicer staff. I am not sure if there is always a food truck visiting the brewery and happily feeding guests, but I was fortunate enough to indulge in delicious barbeque and veggie versions of barbeque from Texorado. It went so well with my Red Ale.

If the Black Keys were to open a bar, it would probably look like Black Shirt Brewing. We moved into the neighborhood, then we learned about Black Shirt was going to open one of these days. A year and a half passed and we couldn't help but speculate. A neighborhood snoop tells us: "Get this, they are ONLY going to brew red ales. What's that all about?" Indeed, it sounded like a shaky plan. Then it opened. And the red ales were bomb. Like so many craft brewers in Denver, you can tell that the crew here actually cares about their product. From the glasses they are served in to the gorgeous recycled wood walls-and-bartop, it is an experience to be here. Yes, yes, it is "out of the way" and up in the "dangerous area" of town. Whatever. Man up. I'm sorry great beer isn't available immediately next door to The Tavern. So, yeah, get here. (UPDATE: after this was featured as a ROTD, lots of questions came in. To clarify: yes, ONLY red ales are brewed here. This includes Red Saisons, Red Rye, Red IPAs, and occasionally a Red Porter will be featured. I didn't think I'd like all red ales either, but here I am, loving it. And be sure to talk with Branden when you go in. Get a rundown on the beers, the hops, and the special glassware they serve in.)

I tend to check out any brewery in town at least once. It's turned into a weekend hobby, try the newest Denver brewery and hope for the best. When I went to BSB I not only hoped for the best, I think I got it. Yes, it's a little out of the way but so are most places right? Three things really jumped out to me during my visit and will get to to come back again and again. 1. The beer was awesome. I tasted 4 different types and liked them all. Their red IPA might be my new favorite IPA. It's very mild for an IPA and I would suggest this to someone that is not really that into hoppy beer. 2. The staff/owner was ubber friendly and talkative. It was pretty crowded when we walked in and he scoped out a table that was leaving soon and told us to wait for that one. He also chatted us up about the beer itself and answered any questions we threw his way. 3. The space is very nice. It's open and inviting but at the same time I felt like I was in a small little tap room. There was also wash clothes in the rest rooms as opposed to paper towels, pretty classy move for a brewery. A move like that tells me they are into the details, which translates into why their taste so damn good. Great beer, great people and classy space!

This place was what I was looking for. I have been enjoying red ales as of late , and BSB hit the spot. What an interesting concept and focus. A very nice little brewery, with a neat little taproom, and an outside beer garden with plenty of space. Food is from food carts, parked out front. Beer prices were just $5 a glass! Yes as stated in other reviews , it's kind of a stemware glass higher and curved on one side, I believe, so you can enjoy the smell of your beverage. am not sure on the ounces, but it was satisfying I felt. Since I am a total beer snob it worked for me. I usually drink the beer the way the brewer wants it drunk, they want you to enjoy it and get the most out of the experience, so I comply :) . We started with a taster board. 8 beers, in generous little snifters , enough for three of us to share for just $17.I would say I really liked 3 out of the 8 and liked 4 . The Saison was not for me, but literally I would not like Saison if someone told me " this is the best saison on earth, ever" I just do not like saisons. I liked the Pale Red Rye , Red Evelyn American Double / Imperial IPA , and the Red Porter . I had two glasses of the Rye. Too bad they had just kicked the Red IPA but it sounded like it would have been good. The service was fine, they checked on us often.

I'm definitely a fan! Typically I don't opt for a red ale, but the offerings they had were delicious. The ambiance was great and the staff was friendly. All of these together make for a great little brewery. I enjoyed the Red Saison and the Red IPA the best, but all had a unique flavor and I would highly recommend anyone in the downtown area to trek on over here.

Neat place, expensive though. $16 for a sampler? Yes, that was sixteen. Wow, I should have asked first. That's nuts. No happy hour, period. $5 beers, all the time. Right at my personal limit of what's reasonable...Kind of. Fifty bucks for a hoody. Really? Dude next to me bought a six pack of canned beer...for ten bucks. Somebody explain this to me. I'm at a loss as to why the microbreweries are soooooo proud of their products. We all know it costs a quarter to throw that pint at me, and it generally isn't even a real pint. Colorado should be the American state to pioneer that if you're going to call it a pint, it needs to be a pint. Not that they say that here, it's a funky looking glass that they're really proud of. And, it's nowhere near being a pint. I digress. Cool place, awesome to see it come to the neighborhood, undoubtedly because the real estate or rent was cheap. Really well done. It has the look of what a tasting room should be. Good service, but not crazy memorable. I sit at bars because the staring tends to produce beer. Food truck out front, not crazy loud. Overall, awesome place if the beer was $3 on happy hour, $4 the rest of the time. The owners would make a ton of money, and everyone would be happy. It's just too expensive.

Black Shirt Brewing only brews Red Ales. What's going on? Good thing I brought my slightly gingery friend. She could hide behind our massive 8 beer sampler. With BSB, it's the full sampler flight or nothing. You must go all the way. This is not great for people like me. I enjoy sampling all their is. It would be tough to enjoy my typical experience here without friends. First, I certainly enjoy red ales, but eventually I couldn't discern some of the subtleties. They did have a tasty porter, though. Fortunately, they do have an informative menu card. Anyway, it's a cool spot. Parking is a little difficult especially with the one way streets, the left turn signal that never worked, and the dead end. Next notable thing: just order all 8 so you can check out their massive sampler carrier. Cool spot, might have to return when they open the restaurant next door.

Quick update, went here with a couple of friends a few nights ago, we were served and engaged in great conversation by the wife of one of the owners who really gave my friends the run-down on the concept, history, and beers. The atmosphere was so positive, one of my favorite small breweries in the metro area (though they could take some additional noise-dampening measures).

Beer's good, staff's fun, and the tables are made of old railroad car beds. Neat concept. Downsides are the location (38th & Blake) and the parking (in the alley, on the side of the bar). All the beers are reds. My fave beer was the Red Saison.

So yeah, I already wrote a book on BSB. But like all good stories, Black Shirt keeps revealing itself a little at a time, and always leaves an impression long after the chapter ends. I can't say enough about this place. I can't say enough about how they've expanded their brew house capacity which has translated into a wickedly wonderful selection of ales - there's something for everyone. Recently I fell deeply in like with BSB's Sangre de la Carretera (Blood of the Road), a collaboration brew with Dunedin Brewery that made my own blood scream with glee. But then they put on their Sticke Alt (replacing the bitter on their flagship) and I was suddenly having a torrid affair with ANOTHER BEER. I have a soft spot for the Pale Red Rye too. And the Caraway pale. And ... But aside from drinking their beer, I support Black Shirt Brewing because they GET what it means to serve an (oftentimes) picky populace. If they don't treat you right, tell them. They will MAKE it right. No attitude, no guff -- unless you're a troll or want a vodka tonic, in which case you'll be shown the door. This is not a bar, people, no matter what Westword says. I've seen babies as young as 6 mo. sitting next to 70 year old retired folks. The cross section fascinates me, despite BSB's location in the part of town dubbed Hipsterhell. But what are you going to do? Avoid RiNo altogether? Trust me, there are inhabitants of the area who don't own fixies and who choose studs over cock rings in their ear lobes. We can all play nice together -- and do it whilst enjoying the latest beauty of a beer coming out of BSB.

For some silly reason, I avoided this place for a long time because I was under the false impression that a beer menu limited to red ales would be boring. What a tragic loss on my part--I've been missing out on some truly delicious beer. Especially the Red Evelyn! The employees were equally lovely. I'm not sold on the fancy glasses, which supposedly enhance the tasting experience. I've got a much better idea--serve the beer in a plain 5-gallon bucket so I can immerse my entire head in that magical nectar.

Stopped in for a minute on a Friday night. All the seats were full but it had a cozy feeling to it. The $7 pierogies from Baba & Pops's food truck is highly recommended. The place is great and workers are friendly. The only thing missing is better differentiation of the beers. I tried the Red Rye, Red Porter, and India Red Ale but all 3 tasted very similar.

Without question, the best brewery in Denver. The red ales are fantastic, the atmosphere is unbeatable, and the staff is extremely friendly. I've never been to a brewery where the owners make a point to chat with customers, and take the time to tell them their story....which if you aren't familiar with the BSB story, I highly recommend watching the documentary Crafting A Nation. So much heart and soul is behind this place, it's hard to not instantly support BSB after knowing it's history and seeing the intricate details in every little aspect of the place. The Beer Garden (back patio) is my favorite spot at BSB. It's a little oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle. There's an awesome view of the mountains, and they often have live music back there. I can confidently say it's the best kept secret in Denver.

I have a ton of respect for this brewery. On our first trip there, Husband and I sat at the bar and got up close and personal with one of the two Black Shirt brothers. We peppered him with questions and he gave us insightful, thoughtful answers. They don't have financial backers - they worked to get this place up and running, and it shows. On our second trip, we brought a group and it was busier, but we grabbed a table, and our new bartender friend came over and chatted with us. It's nice when they are friendly and (at least pretend to) remember who you are. The decor is fantastic - metal and wood in some great combinations. There is a grand piano affixed to the wall with some books sitting where the keys should be. As a piano lover, this is kind of disturbing but it's a great reuse project. As for the beer, Husband thought most of the ones he tried were fantastic. They only do reds, so if you are a red fan, get in here. I highly recommend this place. If we were closer, I might find a reason to hang out here every weekend.

I was surprised to learn that I like reds. They've always been my beer of last resort...the beer that waited patiently in the fridge until i had drank everything else and was too drunk to mind the taste. Until now. BSB only brews reds, and they are freaking delicious! From hoppy to smooth, and every where in between, there isn't a bad brew on the menu. Try them all, you'll be glad you did. Just don't plan on driving yourself home: some of them are potent. Pro tip: Get the American Red Porter, its one of the best local beers, period.

Beers were very good even though I am not a huge red ale fan. Friendly staff and no one seemed to mind we had our daughter but since she was the only kid we tried to sit outside away from people. They have an interesting start up story and good explanations on all of their beers.

Well I made it there without being murdered, that's worth an extra star. I'm not a huge red ale drinker, but the basic red i had was actually quite drinkable (I know, that's not really a helpful comment) The people seemed super cool, when it's warm and big doors are open it'll be awesome I suspect. I definitely haven't ruled it out for future visits!

Great beers. Great tasting room. Odd location, but plenty of parking. We dropped in on BSB during GABF at their Grand Opening. We were 3 of 5 total people outside waiting for them to open the doors in the cold. We ordered samplers of all the beers, and since the giant crowd hadn't showed up yet, they served them to us. But, their taps pour a lot of foam, so it is difficult for them to do taster flights, since it take some time to pour a good sample of each. The regular glasses are unique and allow you to really experience the red beers, nose and all. Oh, and they only do Red beers here. It's a nice place, fun and laid back, and there is plenty of parking and a bus stop right out front. They are kind of in the middle of nowhere (they claim it is still RiNo, but just barely). We had a great, though brief, time here. Will definitely be back. Denver needed some tasty Red Beer!

In my never-ending quest to try every brewery in/around Denver, I ventured to BSB for a friend's going away happy hour party. BSB did not disappoint. The atmosphere, decor and attitude all lead to an overall laid back experience not to mention the glasses they pour the beers in (I so want a set now!). Their specialty is red beer and from what I tried, they are nailing it! I had the red saison and the sour mash red saison. Both were delicious and went down rather quickly. Unfortunately I couldn't sample more beers as I had another party to attend, but will definitely be back for more. Also, parking is a little scarce over there. You could probably park over at Jake's, but I ended up parking a block away. Just an FYI for ladies as the area doesn't feel the safest when walking alone.

First off I will say that I have never been a beer drinker. However, it has seemed to change since all the local breweries have opened. No knowing exactly what I would like (that seems to change from season to season), I would not have thought "red" beer would have been it. I love the location and there seems to be ample parking as well. They have a great patio area in front for beautiful Colorado days. It's next to a road which doesn't bother me at all. If you didn't bring your own dog there is a doll across the street to watch in the meantime. The staff is so knowledgeable. If you need suggestions beyond the descriptions provided on the menu they'll totally help you out. No question is a dumb one and they are SO kind and friendly. If you haven't been there, what are you waiting for? GO! NOW!

I really like Black Shirt. They specialize in red ales, so everything is a red: red saisons, IPAs, pales, etc. My favorite is their Imperial Red Rye IPA--one of the best beers I've ever had. But sadly it's off for a while; I miss it so much! The tap room is very industrial-looking: dark, nice big old sturdy work tables (they remind me of what you'd see in an art studio or high school shop class). They don't have a ton of tables, so if you show up after they've been open a couple hours it might be difficult to find a seat. But that's good for them; it means they aren't hurting for business. Though it can make it a bit difficult sometimes as a customer, especially if you want to get food from a food truck, eat it, and hold your beer all at once. But overall it's a great place that craft beer lovers should definitely check out. I will up my review to 5 stars if they ultimately start being open for more than 12 hours per week.

THIS is my favorite new brewery in years! The beer is awesome-all reds, but honestly you could leave there after having tried several beers and never feel like you had all reds. The ambience is carefully crafted, not stuffy, but coordinated and thought out. Creative decor, awesome lighting, the tables are nothing short of art! Beautiful reclaimed boxcar planks, each table tells a story of years of use, and that's the kind of vibe Black Shirt captures. Though it is new, it seems to have a history. A lot of new breweries throw their $hit together and it shows; BSB has it down. One thing...their awesome glasses are so distracting that at first I didn't notice this--they are expensive. One glass of great craft beer is usually $5, but in that fancy awesome glass (designed for cupping the aroma), I didn't notice that it was $5 for probably a 100z pour. And their growlers--they don't do regular growlers. Their menu says a growler is $14, which is reasonable for a real growler. But no, their growler is a specific exchange program of pre-sealed, 1 liter bottles, making their effective cost per actual growler $28. Too rich for my blood, but hey, given the great glasses and ambience, not to mention the consistent partnership with great food trucks, I think I'd rather stop in and sit a spell.

With a brewery popping up every 2o seconds in Denver, it's roundly refreshing to get one that brings the word "CRAFT" back into the fold. Sorry Denver, but anybody that knows anything about brewing knows that IPA is just cheap thrills for hippies. Yet every new brewery in town is trying to put you behind the wheel of a BRAND NEW India Pale Ale. Begorra! Enough!!! The location is edgy and exciting, the interior is done right and the owners are cool as fans. So how's the beer? Barry Sanders 90 yards into the end zone! Daisy Fuentes bouncing around in a tiny pink bikini back when MTV actually showed music videos! Like Castro and Che down from the Sierra Maestra! The beers are a success and BSB will only help the Denver beer scene as a whole move into the future to compete with the West Coast big boys like Stone, Russian and Lagunitas as well as the East Coast bad boy Dogfish. REAL CRAFT BEER! Well done boys!

Normally it frustrates me to death when a business has limited business hours, like being open just one or two days out of the week. But with Black Shirt I can't say that I am frustrated with such hours. The reason why is that owners that run this brewery are AWESOME at communication skills! So what if they are just open on Saturdays, they will call you back and let you know what their availability is or they will tell you what other bars you can go to to try their beer. Major kudos on the communication! Much appreciated! Far too often if you call a business and they are closed and you leave a message they won't call you back. I finally went to Black Shirt over a week ago on a Saturday and I was not disappointed! The brewery is located in the Five Points area of Denver. I have been to enough breweries that they can spring up in any kind of neighborhood, business park or warehouse district. The parking may be deceiving. If you look for parking right by their front door there is not a lot of parking at all. But if you look to your right from the front door of the building(Sorry, I don't know my directions in this neighborhood) and past a liquor store there is a lot that is Black Shirt's official parking lot. There is a small sign with their logo, BSB to indicate that this is their parking lot. Now onto the beer! Black Shirt specializes in red ales only. The want to show us beer drinkers the diversity that can be explored with red ales alone. They have a red IPA, a Saison,a pale red and their signature red. All of the beers are great but I liked the Saison and the IPA the best. Their main flagship beer was unique in that it had a thicker texture than the others on your tongue and had a great toffee taste in the middle! Everyone here was very friendly and the service was attentive. I do recommend though that you arrive here as early as you possibly can because the place fills up very fast and when 5 PM rolls around you should just assume that you will be standing and not sitting. Black Shirt does not serve food but they have a food truck come by and you can go outside and place your order and they will bring the food inside for you! Black Shirt is unique than many other breweries along the Front Range because they specialize in those reds while so many other breweries just dabble here and there with them, often times not really mastering anything because they are too all over the map with their beer. Not the case here!

Loved this place. Great beer (the red porter and red IPA were sublime). We went on a snowy, gray Friday night. The place had a laid back vibe, even amidst the cool industrial-y branding. Bartender was cheerful, quick to serve and well-informed. Will definitely be back.

A couple weeks ago, I tried easily the best beer I've ever tasted in this very cool Denver start-up. I hate to give away the name of the beer, but apparently if you wear a BSB T-Shirt while at the bar, you can try some of these other interesting, unlisted varieties they have on tap. 5 Stars for making want to fly back to Denver just for another glass.

Even though BSB may be a little out of the way if you're used to frequenting Denver's many craft breweries closer to downtown, trust me when I say it is WORTH visiting no matter how far you have to travel. This small black red-doored building has some great stuff brewing inside. Seriously as good as it gets; BSB represents everything I love about Denver craft beer. On my first visit, I was a total newb to red ales. I'm a beer man, so of course I'd had a few here and there, but didn't know much about how to appreciate them, what flavors to look for, etc. My buddy and I elected to sit at the bar for this reason, so we could hopefully tap into somebody else's expertise on this personally untouched realm of beer goodness. We were certainly not disappointed. All 3 people behind the bar (I'm guessing they were likely the owners) were happy to answer all of our questions and talked to us off and on the whole time we were there, explaining the best one to try first and what flavor elements we should be looking for. I could've sat there for hours trying and re-trying different beers...it was a really great experience. Trust me, I'll be expanding my red ale knowledge in the very near future. If you're a newb like I was, they recommend trying their basic original: the BSB Red. It was an all around great beer. The fruit undertones were subtle and pleasant on the taste buds. Once you've tried that, I recommend moving on to something a little more adventurous. I opted for the Red Saison, which the bar man said was his choice once everyone clears out...and I can definitely see why. A lot more complex than the BSB Red and so so good. Again, I could've sat there for hours just drinking the Red Saison. The glasses are super interesting, drinking out of them definitely takes some getting used to, but the effect they have on your ability to smell and enjoy the beer is amazing. I wish I had some in my home bar... When you get hungry, they have food trucks stopping by, so it really is the complete package. Pick a nice night, mosey on over to Black Shirt and I guarantee you you're in for a good evening. Maybe I'll see you there; I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

Love this place! The Red Sour Mash is one of, if not my favorite beer from all the breweries in town. Very friendly staff, great service, and good atmosphere. Their music concept is very cool...you'll understand once you visit this place. If you like beer, you need to check out BSB.

Awesome brewery. A variety of reds (distinctly different). Staff is very friendly. One of the owners was bartending & gave us some history. Red Evelyn IPA was my favorite. It was named after the owners' grandmother. Amazing. Tap room is small, but cozy. Bathrooms very clean. Food truck outside. Street parking, but ample available on a Saturday night.

One of the first craft breweries we ever tried. LOVE their decor, very cool re-purposing of the railroad cars for tables. Staff is super friendly and helpful. I find that a HUGE plus as so many places get busy and treat you like a number, but not here. We asked a few questions, got some great answers and background on their brewery. Not really a red fan, but enjoyed many of their beers. Have been back twice and would go back again!

Very trendy, super tasty. There are so many choices and most are delicious I love the way it looks and service is very good. I would recommend on a brewery tour. Merch is pricey and beer flight is a little overpriced. Overall, my favorite is the saison or IPA. The actual place is cute, very hipster with distressed wood and such. Also, they give you water in mason jars which is awesome. They have byov (bring your own vinyl) hence the "trendy" but there isn't anything wrong with that

I love the tap room, and the service is always great, but I've given Black Shirt three tries and have been disappointed by the beer each time. Some of it is OK, but it is nearly all over-hopped in my opinion. I feel like a truly quality brewery should offer a wider variety of beers, and that hoppy selections should only be a part of their offerings. Unfortunately that's not the case here. But if you like hoppy beers, you'll like Black Shirt.

I went to Black Shirt a month or so ago for the opening party (or one of their opening parties). I was excited that a new brewery opened up downtown, but was pretty disappointed in the quality. They had three beers on tap at the time which didn't surprise me since it's a new brewery. All of them were some sort of red beer. The red IPA was particularly one noted, slightly sweet and didn't have much of a hops flavor to it. Maybe I'm just not a reds fan. With that said, I am willing to give the brewery another try.

Off the beaten path in Denver in the RiNo district lies the small, great brewery Black Shirt, a brewery that specializes in nothing but Red Ales. All of the beers share a similar flavor profile but each style is still unique and has something different about it. My personal favorites were the Red Ale (The standard flagship beer), Pale Red Rye, and Sour Mash Red Saison. Mix the great beers with a inviting environment, friendly staff, and some of the most unique glassware around and this is a great brewery. A place I will go to again when in the area, and a place I would bring out of town guests to experience. One of the hidden gem breweries in the Denver area.

First timer tonight. The beer was incredible! Hard to pick a favorite because they were all good, but I'd recommend the BSB Evelyn. The ambiance was "The Kitchen" (for Denver/boulder locals) meets Avery brewing. I couldn't get over how awesome the space was, a modern, industrial feel. Very intimate and warm. Most importantly, I had a chance to meet the brothers who started BSB, tonight through a friend. You will too, they'll be the ones taking your order. On first impression, these were genuine, hospitable, and gracious. They talked about how they planned this for 10 years, how they made the tables themselves, turned a warehouse garage into welcoming tap room. After hearing that, I could tell their hearts and dreams were put into this place. Their brewing style and taste speaks for itself (officially in my top 3 for CO craft brewery tap room experiences), but I love seeing great people do great things and be successful. This is a Denver must if you're looking for a great craft brew.

We found this place from a waitress at a restaurant in downtown Denver. We're so glad that we did. They just opened up a few weeks before our visit. This place only had a tasting room at the time. We ordered a sampler paddle which included a wet hopped Pale ale. All the beers we're quite good. Some better than others, we enjoyed the wit and imp. red. Some of the beers may need tweaking as this is such a new place but all in all very good beers all around. The brewers also developed a new type of glass for enjoying beer out of. It kind of holds the vapors around your nose while you sip. At least that is the idea, unfortunately we didn't get to try it but it looks interesting and promising. We'll definitely visit this place again if we come back to visit.

Love this local tasting room!!! Used to have to follow them on facebook to determine their hours, but starting this week they will be open regularly!! Their uniquely shaped glasses take a second to get used to, but are worth the effort. Everyone I have taken here has found a beer they love!

Cool people making some interesting beer, in a cool old building. Great to have a brewery in the 'hood.

I like Black Shirt, with its odd location, warm, cozy decor, seriously awesome glasses and friendly staff but what I do not love are the beers. I like them, I just do not crave them. They are all a variation on a Red - Pale Ale, Ale, Imperial IPA - and I think that partially makes them indistinguishable from each other. I also think that Reds are not my thing, so if they are yours, you will be in heaven. That being said, there are other types of beers that I have grown to love (Porter and Stout) so maybe after enough tries the Reds will grow on me too...

This is hands down my favorite brewery in Denver!! They specialize in Red Ales, which are all so flavorful and smooth. You have to check this place out. If they have the Red Evelyn, you are in luck!

I live in the best city EVER. I recently stepped into and met the peeps of one of the best little breweries in Denver, Black Shirt Brewing Company. Brothers Chad and Branden Miller, and Chad's beautiful spouse, Carissa Miller are the three founders. Their tagline: Genuine. Passionate. Soulful. Authentic. Beer. Of course their product is all four of these things, as these three people embody these aspects as well. My third time in the place I felt like Norm from 'Cheers' as Carissa called me out by name and asked me how our dinner went the other night. Go there. Give them your money, they deserve it. The Chai Red Porter. You will totally want to make out with it. Also on that visit Chad informed us that he is the artist of this Johnny Cash piece. 'I've never painted before, but we had everything on the line to open up this place, just had my son, I painted it during a pretty intense time.' NEVER PAINTED ANYTHING BEFORE??? The passion in this Johnny Cash piece is for 'all the people who thought we couldn't do this.' Chad shared. And a big huge FUCKYEAH is what the ambiance of BSB is all about. The Omni glasses they serve their beers in are all part of the unique experience. Its okay if you spill, there are no pint glasses in the place, and they can give you more beer. BSB specializes in Red Ales and thankfully so. Their four barrel brew house serves up some of the best Porters, IPA's and Saisons you'll have here in Denver. Ummm, for Valentine's they served up Chai Red Porter Ice Cream - YES. I said Red Porter Ice Cream. Drizzled with Cinnamon Red Porter Caramel and the ice cream was made by a friend of theirs, Jaime Boyko of Ghost Plate and Tap, with a Baloa Chocolate disc (which I used as my spoon) from Ritual Chocolate, BSB plays nice with others. They often incorporate friends and other local businesses who also run with scissors and do their own thang. It is encouraged. (Jaime dropped off the ice cream after a brain storming idea, and thus the pairing was offered.) After our last visit at BSB we headed over to Infinite Monkey Theorem (Next blog entry to happen soon!) where we met Adam and Joslyn who stop by BSB often. The two Libation Dr's will actually be collaborating on a concoction soon!! The food truck craze is the next best 'playing nice with others' activity many brew pubs are participating in. And what a brilliant idea! You open up a place so you can serve the one thing you do well: BEER, and you don't need to build a kitchen, order food, deal with dishwashers who don't show up...you have some of the best food trucks in Denver come to YOU and everyone is happy. The trucks at BSB: Thurs - Caveman Cafeteria: Where The Hunters Gather (check out their successful Kickstarter.) Fri - The Soup Gurus Sat - Mestizos Food Truck So friend BSB on facebook and keep up with specials, hours and happenings. BSB has one of the best vibes in the city. I highly recommend a bike tour of Whittier/RiNo breweries as well. Blog to come soon of our last tour of Our Mutual Friend, Infinite Monkey, BSB and more. Each place we went gave a kudos to the last place we just came from. Go play nice, run with scissors whenever you can and oh, buy a BSB t-shirt. They are pretty incredible. And p.s. check out their face book for parking info...the Walnut Liquor lot tows...ride your bike or park in the street or directly behind BSB...check FB though... happyfuntimes.org

Damn good beer! These guys make some fine beer. It's Crisp, it's clean and no aftertaste found with other microbrews. If you want to drink some great beer you need to get these guys a try. Do it now, before they become famous. You can say, I knew them when...
