Sandwiches were fine even though I prefer Johny McGuire's. My complaint is with some rude dude who takes the orders while standing there on the side of the counter. First of all I grew up in this town and I can understand how sometimes locals can be annoyed with tourist during the "on" seasons but this dude who works there was a complete Jerk. I'm sure he has only lived here for a few years and has this attitude like he can't deal with anyone that does not live here. I ordered a sandwich and at the end of the order I asked, "do you mind if I get that on wheat"? He barked to me, "I already asked you if you wanted it on wheat and that's what I just repeated telling you". I wanted to tell him off but my husband held me back. I will tell everyone I know how awful the service was here! Too bad that my mother is the top concierge in town. They should fire this guy. It's a shame one guy can ruin the whole experience.

Lousy service. Equally lousy sandwiches. Sandwiches: Way too much bread (which was dry and stale) Limited portion size of meat (I order the Jerry Garcia sandwich) Made without a care in the world for the consumer (I asked for no mayo and was given "no bacon"). This is a nice segway to discuss the service portion of my experience. Service (or lack thereof): I received an awkward unwelcoming stare when I entered the front door of the business. The deadhead ungroomed older man at the register did not say a word to me. When he did speak he was very curt. No "thank you," no "goodbye," no "sayonara." Service was pathetic. IF, IF, IF!!!! The food was great I still would not go back again based on the service alone. Seeing as the service was despicable along with the sandwiches I will hereafter warn further people from patronizing the business Dirty interior.... And lady, easy on the sauce.

    Yummy!

I've been here a few times and probably won't be back. One time the sandwich fell apart in my hand because the rye bread was not fresh. The last time the sandwich was loaded with veggies and only a tiny amount of turkey.

The Grateful Deli is probably the smallest sandwich shop I've ever seen. A few steps up and into the place and you realize just how valuable real estate is in Aspen. There is table seating outside only and all the food is packaged for take out. I had the Garcia sandwich. Turkey, bacon, sprouts, avocado, banana peppers, lettuce and tomato. I substituted yellow mustard for the mayo that is standard on the Garcia. I went with the wheat baguette for bread. Nicely done, gents. The counter service was helpful and friendly and our order was out in a jiffy. No complaints from anyone in our party. Boulder chips and an array of cooler beverages round out the menu offering. If you happen to be in Aspen and don't want to spend and arm and a leg on lunch, try this place out.

I went to this place a few months ago, well I wasn't impressed at all and I bought 2 sandwiches to make sure. I was starving and really wanted deli style food, well there was another place next to the super market that was WAY better.

Not usually a huge sandwich fan, but Grateful Deli is my favorite lunch spot in aspen. They have a huge variety of breads, meats, cheeses, veggies and other toppings. You can get a hot panini or a cold french roll, and everything is good. Plus it is a cute little laid back spot, and a close walk to great sitting areas in downtown Aspen. Love it!

We ordered the Garcia and Terrapin here and they were both pretty good. I thought the Garcia needed a little mustard, but I like mustard on everything! The Terrapin was really yummy, although with the italian dressing on it, it definitely needed to be eaten right away. The service was quick and the staff friendly. We saw the guy who took our order later at the farmer's market and he remembered us and asked how our sandwiches were. We would definitely go back.

Yes, probably one of my favorite sandwich shops. Came here before a day on the mountain and I was one happy camper. HUGE sandwiches and relatively fast service. An Aspen Must.

Sandwiched (pun intended) between two buildings is the best sandwich I found in Aspen - Grateful Deli. These guys are awesome and serve one heck of a good meal! I had the slipknot and it was fantastic. Get a great meal and a soda (and play the game) with these really laid back, cool guys!

This place is wonderful! I had the Eddy Out, and it was the perfect lunch-sized sammy for me. Everything was really fresh and I love the atmosphere to this place. If you are looking for a place that just does amazing sandwiches, go here! No place to sit really other than outside, so just enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Awesome sandwiches. Come with an empty stomach because you will leave full. Panini's were solid!!

Tiny little place. Great sandwich. Ok service but nice and fast. Good value for Aspen.

This place is fantastic! They delivered to me, took card and tasted amazing! I got a panini and it was huge! Shareable for sure. Will visit agin the next time I am in town.

Best place for a sandwich in Aspen. But their is no seating inside. And Be Polite dont talk on your cellphone when inside the the restaurant. They dont have seats, you can call in your order and have it waiting for you. Or have it delivered or order it right then and there. 1 Guy on the phone, and 2 make the sandwiches. They have a extensive menu for such a small place. I ordered the Morning Dew Sandwich. For 1.00 more I could of had it as a Panini. But it was good just like it was. It consists of Ham, Bacon and Tomato and Mustard and mayo on sourdough bread. It was served warm, and a few block walk back to the Bottom of Aspen Mtn I Sat Down and Dug into it. It was still warm and Oh So delicious. Prices were about what you would probably may at Mcdonalds for a unhealthy Big Mac. And this was healthy and delicious.

Grateful Deli is the perfect place to eat lunch as a local in Aspen. The prices are so cheap, and the portions are humungous. First and foremost, the owner is a super nice guy. He is down-to-earth, and he makes you feel super welcome in this tiny little shop. For $7.50, you get a sandwich that makes two meals and a punch card for buy 10 get 1 free. I love the Bertha ($7.50), which is essentially an Italian sub. The meats and cheeses are great quality, and the sandwich is layered perfectly so that you can taste all of the ingredients. My veggie friends love the vegetarian options too. Anyone can eat here and love it. Cards accepted!

We stopped here for impromptu sandwiches while strolling through Aspen and it was a hit for all four of us. They offer a comprehensive menu with veggie options; every part of my sandwich and salad tasted fresh. The service was quick and friendly, suggestions were easy to get from staff with a mere suggestion. Theres no indoor seating here but there are a few tables outside on the sidewalk if you're lucky enough to grab one. Price point was great for the location.

The food is great - sandwiches are big and filling, made with the right amount of everything. The place itself is super tiny, and really really hot. Waiting in line to get your order (for you first timers, CALL AHEAD!!) can cause you to almost pass out from heat exhaustion. I highly suggest calling your order in and then going to pick it up, because if you wait in line......................... It takes close to 15 minutes to get a sandwich. I would definitely go there again, but I'll call ahead, or have it delivered

Decent sandwich. Good prices (even for Aspen). Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Amazing sandwiches!!! I got the Terrapin and my boyfriend got the Franklin Tower. They were both excellent and actually cheap for the size of them! If you're shy or not super hungry, sharing is definitely an option. The tiny shop is just about big enough for 4 people to stand in at a time but there are benches outside and a park down the block which is perfect for a fall picnic. Thanks to the Grateful Deli for keepin' it real in Aspen.

Love this sandwich shop. Large sandwiches, I can usually share with someone else and it's plenty. Although there is no seating inside, there are a few tables outside.

Excellent sandwich quick service and a serious vibe mark this place great!! Don't plan to sit in since there are only some tables outside, but do go get a Garcia!!

After camp and/or sleeping in our van for the past week in CO, my friend and I were looking for a cheaper yet delicious restaurant to dive into while we stopped for a day in Aspen. Our goal: find Aspen's best kept secret. We found it. Overall both our sandwiches were amazing and huge for how much we spent for them. My friend got a turkey red pepper panini and could hardly finish it, while I got a turkey pesto sandwich and could only eat half even if I wished I could finish it. The bread made both sammies fantastic with how soft filling and fresh yet not overpowering they were. The pesto was fresh and flavorful. Damn just damn. If you're ever in Aspen, please hit this place up. You won't be disappointed.

Stopped by the Grateful Deli for lunch today! What a great place! Loved the decor! Our family of five all ordered sandwiches that were loved and quickly devoured! Fast, affordable, hip, and delicious!

Definitely stop here on the way to the slopes in the winter or before a hike in the warmer weather. Sandwiches are great and big- if you don't have a huge appetite two can share (half is about the size of a regular one). I would recommend calling in advance during the busy times as it can be a bit of a wait. That way you can grab and go!

The very first place I found on my very first day ever in Aspen. Of the three staff, one person was friendly and sociable, one offered me tips on where to food shop over my stay, and the third quickly made me a roast beef and swiss panini that was a freakin' miracle. Quick, delicious, semi-affordable. I'll absolutely be back.

I had the best BLT in recent memory (which is the only kind of memory I have). Lots of bacon, nice toasted bread, shredded lettuce, and okay tomato. The only drawback is the they have only about three tables and they're all outside. Not a big deal on a beautiful day like today, though.

It's 5 stars for a sandwich shop. Not to be confused with 5 stars for a sit-down, expect-a lot kind of place. I like the vibe, which is true to their love of the Dead and sandwiches made with good ingredients. I never feel like I've eaten a food bomb, which I get when eating at Johnny Mcguires. Don't get me wrong. I love the sandwiches at JM's too, but some will give you sad tummy if you eat the whole thing. I have been going to GD's on and off for about ten years now. Consistent.

The food here was delicious, but it hardly makes up for the downright rudeness of the staff. Grateful is definitely a misnomer for this sandwich shop. I had the Shakedown which is a yummy sliced turkey breast topped with roasted red peppers and a pesto that mingles with the mayo to make a magical taste combo. The jalapeño and cheddar chips were also quite good, although personally I like a bit more heat in my jalapeño chips. I ordered with several other family members, and they also found their sandwiches to be very tasty. The food almost makes up for the abusive treatment you receive from the staff...almost. I did have a large order to place, and since I was picking it up at lunchtime, I gave them my order in person at 10:30, before they weren't yet slammed for the lunch rush. The gentleman who took my order was very inconvenienced by my patronage and seemed rather disinterested in providing me with any sort of courtesy. When I asked if they carried unsweetened iced tea, he replied, "I don't really care". Then, halfway through my order he asked me what kind of tip I was planning on giving. This employee, it seemed, was going out of his way to make my experience an unpleasant one. It was as if I was being punished for placing a large order; completely uncalled for and incredibly unwise for a business. Believe me, I could go on, because the insulting treatment did not end there, but I think you get the picture. I would recommend trying a deli that appreciates the business.

Originally called IN & OUT HOUSE, and then UPSIDE DOWN HOUSE. Renamed for the second time, just as delicious. First renaming had something to do with some Californian establishment... who knows. *wink* It's not a sit down place, you just go in and order and eat somewhere else, much too small for any tables inside. It's smashed between two other buildings on Main. Still the same yummy sandwiches. I always get their In and Out sandwich with no cheese, which is still, to this day, one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. It's the sprouts and the banana peppers. Furreal. Visiting Aspen and need an idea for a fun day? Grab an In and Out, some Boulder chips, and get your butt up Independence Pass. What makes Aspen so beautiful isn't what's in town, don't be a stranger to the beautiful surroundings. Sandwiches are FULL of stuff, I'm always down for a good sandwich, I'll destroy the whole thing, but if you're not ravenous, maybe split it with a friend. I totally put the sticker they gave me on my car, like a tool. :D

Love this 'wich shop. I can't tell you what is on the menu except for the Magic Mushroom, which I love so much that I order it every single time. Tip: call ahead and pick up to avoid the line at lunch. Enjoy!

Well, deli me sideways. For a non-local, this place was hard to find. Rationale: I was on the wrong side of the street. Ah. This place was a "Welcome to Aspen" lunch for my coworker and myself - after a long day of flying in NYC, we were hungry. Once we found the place, we ordered up some food and sat outside. It took a good 15 minutes for our food to come. This begs the question - was the service slow? Is Aspen just slow? Are we just used to the speed NYC? All good questions. Truth: I don't really know. The food we got was good - there are a lot of special sandwiches, and if I had the time I would be back to try more. Slightly slow, slightly pricey (lunch was $14 or so each, but I think that's just an Aspen thing) but definitely worth a stop in. Not the best deli sandwich i've ever had, but I think i'm being unfair with what I am comparing it to. That said, Aspen residents and visitors alike --- this is definitely a place to check out.

Fantastic little sandwich shop! They have a huge variety of awesome combinations and have some of the best panini bread I've ever had, fresh, crispy, but still soft on the inside. There's hardly any room inside the store so count on eating outside at their sidewalk tables or taking your food to go. The sandwich portions are GENEROUS for the price, particularly for the area. But don't worry you'll want to finish all your food because it's so delicious. An excellent little find! Make sure to stop by and try a panini. Staff was very friendly.

I don't even know what to say about this place. I HAVE to type because any time I try to say anything about it I start salivating. This was an amazing sandwich! We were walking back to our hotel from the Aspen Brewing Co where they had menus for the deli there. We asked them if it was good and they told us that they were awesome so we decided to check it out. I'm glad we did. I can't remember the name of the sandwich but it was the buffalo chicken one. I love sandwiches but I usually have to change things up to the way I like it, but this sandwich was perfect, I didn't change a thing. We wanted to go to Aspen to try out all of the cool restaurants they had, so when we had to stop at this little place and just get some quick food, it instantly made it one of the higlights of the trip.

Taste, price & interior uniqueness to Aspen all make this deli a location to try, rinse & repeat. First step inside, all eyes on Grateful Dead murals. Second, you may notice the quick grab & go setup. Talk to the cashier and watch your sandwich magic happen. Summer time? Sit outside, listen to the tunes & soak in the sun. Winter? Take it back to your hotel, job or up the gondola & enjoy the grate-ness.

Stop by the Grateful Deli for some great sandwiches. This place is a bit of a local hangout and around lunchtime, you'll most likely see a line streaming out of this very small and popular joint. Grateful Deli offers a nice selection of sandwiches and paninis. For $1 extra, you can turn any of their sandwiches into a panini. The panini options include the Pigpen (ham, swiss, honey mustard, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar), Darkstar (roast beef, red onion, provolone, Dijon mustard and horseradish mayo) and the Magic Mushroom (marinated portobello mushrooms, roasted red pepper, pesto and provolone), just to name a few. The Magic Mushroom ($8.75) was delicious, made with great, high quality ingredients. Same can be said of the Slipknot sandwich ($7.95), made with pastrami, homemade coleslaw, tomato, swiss and Dijon mustard on a sub roll. There are also salad options as well as build- your-own sandwich option. There are a few chairs and tables just outside this hole-in-the wall but a better option is to enjoy your sandwich at one of the local parks, with at least two within a block of this place. A great little find!

What am I grateful for today? The sandwich I ate from Grateful Deli - the Darkstar! Roast beef, provolone, red onion, Dijon mustard and horseradish mayonnaise on a grilled foccacia bread. It was just bursting with flavor. The bf and I were starving after a noon yoga class, so we stopped by the deli to pick up some sandwiches. The gal taking our order was super friendly and helpful. My bf didn't want cheese or mayo on his Mexacali Chicken, so she substituted avocado and Dijon mustard. The sandwiches are huge! They cut them up in half and wrap in foil, put them on a paper dish, and wrap again in saran wrap for you to take to go. Extra star because they offer Sweet Leaf Tea. I had never had this brand before and its delicious! I tried the Mint and Honey, along with the Pomegranate...both excellent flavors. Sandwiches run about $7-$9. You could easily split one if you're not super hungry or a big eater. Check 'em out and be grateful such a fantastic deli exists on Main St. in Aspen!

came here on a whim,.Tried to get a table at the Main Street Bakery & Cafe for breakfast - he hostess/waitresses were no where to be found- so we simply took a walk down Main st. and found this place. we had the Mexicali Panini and the Darkstar. They were both tasty and filling.
