The setting is great, but food was underwhelming. Service was alright. No liquor license, so was unable to pair food with a margarita, which took away from the experience a bit. Tried out on a Groupon, but won't be back in the near future. Might give them a try again if food quality improves, because being on the lake is attractive.

Service was good. The waitress was very warm and engaging. The food, however, was completely forgettable. I had the mole (lukewarm, gloppy). A friend ordered a chicken sandwich that came to the table with one silver dollar sized piece of lettuce. Was obvious the kitchen only going through the motions. Save your appetite for something else. Sorry Cielo.

Don't do it! We will never go back! They wiped down the table and the menus with a sour rag. The chips and salsa were just ok. We ordered shrimp cocktail but received the Mexican shrimp cocktail. It was sweet (yuck) and the shrimp were tiny and bland ($11). The iced tea was old and bitter. I asked to exchange it for a soda and was charged for both. The chicken burritos were horrible. The chicken was tasteless and the green chili had no flavor. I would recommend Los ARCO's or La Loma. Horrible!! It was $50 for two and no alcohol.

Food is blah. Chips were stale and way too salty. Salsa was very bland. Don't waste your time or money.

Food is ok. Service is usually fine. The view is to die for! Luna's up the street is Fantastic!

Terrible food... tastes worse than casa bonita... View isn't worth the price for crappie food and mediocre service. ... The view is the only good thing about the place

*If I were able to rate zero stars I would choose that option.* By far one of the worst experiences I have had in a long time. I saw the groupon deal and thought this was a good option for Valentines day. I looked up the place for reviews and saw quite a few negative reviews for the place. Still, I saw the majority was for poor service and no alcohol/bar option. I still thought with the deal they were offering groupon it couldn't be all that bad. Wrong. I called and made a reservation for 8 --and it was like they told me I would still have to wait ( like isnt that what a reservation means? ) I thought it might be a misunderstanding that would present obvious solutions when I was at the place in person. My boyfriend and I showed up ( before 8 ) when we walked in we saw other people just kinda standing around ..very uncomfortable and awkward. I swear I saw the manager walk right by look square at everyone and continue walking .. not even an attempt to speak to anyone ( Hello welcome hi etc etc.. ) Nothing. Several severs spoke to us asked if anyone had helped us, and because so many of them were trying to help us no one knew what was going on . They were extremely confused. We eventually sat down and right away they brought us drinks and chips and salsa. The chips were hot and the salsa didnt seem so bad..I thought this was looking up. My boyfriend ordered the mixed fajitas (Chicken shrimp steak) I ordered the crispy chili relanos with beans and rice. While we continued eating the chips and salsa , all of a sudden , the chips were ice cold and hard. As if they had been sitting out all day. Really? A basket of old ass chips covered with "hot fresh" chips --nah no one will notice the difference. When she brought my plate it was cold ..and flavorless. The chili relanos were soggy, tasteless, and were extremely hard to eat. The rice was dry and completely lacking . My beans, were straight from a can--and I mean wal-mart brand can of refried beans. Not even a pinch of salt on them.. gross. My boyfriend, however, I felt really bad for. He showed me what they served him: Someone obviously didnt know that you have to shell the shrimp-- something you would think is elementary considering its on their menu. My boyfriend literally had to peel the casing off to eat it. Then , he showed me the "steak". . I was shocked. He picked up this nasty ball of gristle. It looked like a sci-fi movie prop. I'm serious, a ball of nasty about 4 to 5 inches of cartilage , literally attached to stringy pieces of meat. I couldnt believe they served that to us with a smile. It LITERALLY looked as if , they served someone a steak earlier that night and saved the "trimmings" and warmed those up for another persons plate. My boyfriend just so happened to be that lucky person. So not only did they serve my boyfriend a complete plate of gross food --but when they served him his plate of toppings for the fajitas someone was brilliant , and served him a whole pinch of cheese. You could count the shredded bits of cheese on his plate... I said something to the server about it -and of course she didnt hesitate to charge my boyfriend for a side of cheese --only $1.75 on top of the already overpriced piece of shit plate they want for $15 . When we finally checked out we had a small problem with our groupon- for whatever reason I couldn't pull up my gift from my email . During the confusion of trying to pay--another server collected our money and gave us the discount . After 10 -15 mins of trying to find it, the server basically told us to give them the difference untill I can find the "Gift code" for the groupon. My boyfriend and I wanted to get the hell out of there so we gave her $20 ( which would have been the difference) and left. I immediately hopped on my computer and found the gift code. I called the restaurant , gave the lady the code and IMMEDIATELY drove back ( They close at 9 and this was already 9:30) . I walked inside and almost instantly ( I think its the manager) she couldn't wait to approach me and talk to me ( I'm sure only to tell me how they're closed or come back another day etc etc. ) I basically said I want my money , she opened the register and it was right there ready for me. I grabbed that $20 and left in an instant. My boyfriend and I ended up having a miserable night because physically we didnt feel good. I felt the food they served us was worse than jail food . NEVER have I felt so manipulated as a customer. Service: 3 -- yes she brought our drinks and plates right away--but somehow that ball of rubber gristle slipped her sight when she served it Atmosphere: 2-- feels completely fake, The inside seems like it could have potential but they dont even have a functioning bar! Food :0- Never in my life have I ever seen such horseshit food --and I've been to Casa Bonita AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS ! NOT WORTH THE GROUPON DISCOUNT

The atmosphere was great. Sitting on a lake view. Sets the mood. However the food was not what was expected. Service was great. The fajitas came out warm on a skillet not sizzling. The meats was flavorless. The side garnishments for the fajitas were enough to make 2 rolls. The pozole was no where near what it should. I hope this place reads the reviews and corrects. Like i said great place but food was disatisfactory.

The atmosphere in this restaurant is amazing.... On the water and very clean. However, the food was mediocre. Queso - pretty good but extremely rich Civiche - bland and they added lemon and pepper. Was not good. Extra hot green chile - my fiancé loved this. I don't eat pork, so I don't know first hand. Build your own burrito - my fiancé said it was "okay" but the chicken was dry. Build your own plate 1 soft chile rellano and 1 beef enchilada -the chile rellano was damn good but the enchilada was gross. It tasted like it had mint in it. Sopapilla - nice they included cinnamon and sugar but also tasted like the honey had mint in it. Gross.

Should be 2 1/2 stars because of the lack of any alcoholic drinks. I came for lunch with my girlfriend's family today. There wasn't a lot of people there. Bad sign. I saw people having plates picked up with food still on them. This could mean bad product or big portions. The clientele was... well... older, errr more seasoned than normal. As a fan of spicy food, this was concerning. We were greeted at the door immediately, which is nice. We sat inside by a window looking out on to Hidden Lake. Great view! The server was somewhat attentive. When we got our food, it took a while for her to check in. I ordered the chimichanga for $11.95. I had steak for $1.50 extra, and sour cream for $1.00 extra. Ya $14.45 for a smothered chimi, 3 tablespoons of beans and 2/3 cup of rice. I am definitely not complaining about the portion. I was stuffed when I was done. I mean really stuffed. It was good. The green chili had a really good flavor. It was too mild. They had four hot sauces to choose from, so that mildness was eliminated immediately. The steak was really salty. Borderline for me, but I like a lot of salt. This would blow a normal person away. It needed more something. Chili powder, cumin, cilantro, Mexican oregano.. something. The beans and rice were great. The portion of sour cream was generous, but I did pay $1 for it. The chicken sandwich that my girlfriend's son ordered looked like it had a nice cook on it. He ate the whole thing. The French fries were a small portion. The add on prices are ridiculous. If you order a steak burrito with guac, sour cream and pico with beans and rice on the side. You will pay $16.48. The food is okay I guess. If you want good Tex-Mex go to Emilio's on Colfax. They also don't serve alcohol! What!!! In Denver? The craft beer capitol of America? One of the most liquor-centric cities? This will kill this business no matter the food.

I give Cielo one star because I can't give 0 stars. We walked in and got a table...that's as far as it went. The restaurant is pretty and the view is gorgeous - we didn't even get try the food. Our waitress was COMPLETELY uninterested in us. We were the only customers inside and there was one guest outside on the patio. I know we were in a Mexican restaurant, but it IS in the U.S. so English might be a good thing to learn. The true reason we left was our waitress' ambivalence. She had no desire to help us nor assist us with the menu. A very strange experience. Too bad, because it has amazing potential to be a great eating place.

The girl and I had a living social coupon.... So we went. fajitas were hot and tasted great with shrimp. The flank state in it was over cooked and tough. The girls taco was flavor less and cold. Chicken enchilada was cold too.. WTF. We asked for hot salsa. She brought a side of pico 1/4 the tiny bowl.. $1.99. My girl said she was gonna eat my guac from my fajitas... Waitress never told us I didn't get guac or sour cream with my plate. $3.00!!! They penny pinch the hell out of you! Please stay away.

I tried to give them a break on my first review, however on our second trip there is no excuse for the absolute chaos that you feel as soon as you step in the door. I really hoped the service would improve and they could get a liquor license, so I could happily boat over or walk over. However, I fear for my safety as the food is served lukewarm to cold and the salt content could trigger a heart attack. I have had equally tasty Mexican food at Taco Bell which also got my order right. This place needs one of those restaurant rescue shows to come in and teach the staff some systems and how to create food from fresh ingredients and not from a can. Just close and get a new concept! there are only 50 other Mexican restaurants within 2 mile radius that are better and more authentic. Plus eating a burrito and beans then swimming off into the lake seem like recipe for a disaster.

My sister and I decided to try this new restaurant. We arrived at 1:00 on a weekday and the huge parking lot was literally empty. There was an open sign lit in the window but I thought maybe they forgot to turn it off from the night before. Anyway, I called them to see if they were open and yes they were. A little hesitant, we went in. We were given a choice of anywhere to sit in the restaurant as we were the only customers. Chose a table by the window with a view of the lake. Pretty view and nice patio for when the nice weather arrives. Server arrived promptly for drink order. No liquor license yet. Also, chips and salsa. I ordered the stuffed sopapilla. Server recommended the ground beef filling. There is also a choice for the extra hot green chili. The flavor was not there. The green chili was tasteless and very mild. The prices were a bit high for the serving sizes and quality. As if this isn't bad enough. Both my sister and I got food poisoning from the food. I am not sure how fresh the food can be if they have no customers. I really wanted this to be a new great restaurant but was very let down and downright mad that their food made us physically ill.

So I was hoping to get to post a argument to all the negative reviews but I could not. The only things positive I can say is the child's hamburger was really good and the obvious that the view is amazing. this place has so much potential but its being wasted with the quality of the food

The service is incredibly slow and terrible. (i.e., it took 25 minutes after we gave the waitress our credit cards to get them back). They put meat in our vegetarian order. The guac wasn't seasoned. The view, however is lovely and the back patio has a nice breeze. Once they get their liquor license, I'll try again for chips, salsa, and margs.

  • Crystal R.

First thing is first. They don't have a liquor license. I feel like everyone should know this information prior to visiting. Margaritas & Mexican food go together like PB&J! For the food, overpriced for small meat portions. The hard taco shell itself appeared to be store bought from Costco. They don't have mushrooms at all. Also no vegetarian options. Salsa was good though. Colored tortilla chips were just ok (not made fresh) Overall restaurant vibe and decor is nice but seating is super close to one another-essentially you are eating with strangers. Wouldn't go back unless they get their liquor license so I can have a margarita on the deck.

This restaurant seems out of place. It's too nice for the area it is in. It's right by a small, strip mall, and yards away from a residential district. From the outside, you would hardly know it's a restaurant unless you had a Groupon to go there. I, for one, never knew it was there until my wife came up with this Groupon. Inside, is a different story. This place overflows with potential. Someone spent a lot of money making it look upscale, and trimming it out nicely. The building is very well done, and the point where, when you walk in, you think, "This is going to be expensive," but it's not. Cielo is very affordable and priced pretty much the same as if the building were ordinary and plain. Probably the biggest problem at this place for me is that there is almost nothing vegetarian to eat on the menu. That's no surprise. I expect that at a Mexican restaurant, but they didn't even have the usual choices I can go to. One good, vegetarian point is that they do offer "Whole" beans, and the waitress assured me there was no "meat" in there, but I'm not so certain there wasn't any lard. When they bring the chips and salsa to the table, the salsa is nice. I like the flavor and texture, and it's mildly spicy so that you know you are in a Mexican restaurant, but anyone in the group can eat it. The chips are definitely from food service, and unlike any others I have ever seen or tasted. They were neither good, nor bad, just different. The food was pretty pedestrian. It was nothing really remarkable, but not bad either - just "run of the mill," or ordinary. What really sets this place apart is the view. It's a beautiful view of the lake we used to call Hidden Lake that is just south of Westminster HIgh School. From the dining room, and on the patio, the view of the lake is spectacular. The owners chose an excellent location, and an excellent interior, but there is still a problem with the interior - they need to keep it clean. They had tile floors that showed the dirt of every customer who walked in that day. All around the place it was borderline messy, dirty, and unkempt. That really distracted from the overall experience, and it was really inexcusable since we went there when the place was not busy at all. This place is beautiful, and, if I wanted to sit on a balcony sipping Margaritas, this is where I would go. I did not order alcohol, but a full bar was there and ready to serve. I do not know if they have their liquor license yet. I would not, however, go out of my way to dine here just for the food. They need to upgrade the food and its presentation to fit more with the upscale style of the restaurant. The place has potential, but they'd better iron out the problems quickly, or they will be moving on.

After sitting empty for almost 3 years, Cielo opened in the place of the former Blu and C-Level space on Hidden Lake. The restaurant touts itself as "Casual Mexican," but there are elements of American, Italian, and English foods. I was excited to see that the menu is loaded with mariscos dishes. So far, we have only sampled the appetizers. Why? Well, because they are not serving alcohol yet. I hope that they license is coming soon because the downstairs bar and patio is super cool. The garage style doors open to the patio on the lake. The downstairs bar has many TVs, a large layout, and beautiful scenery. The only thing that is missing is sweet, sweet alcohol. I will be back, but I will call first. From what I was told, they may have another hearing before it is all said and done.

I really wanted to try this place, i really want to like this place, then i found a groupon and BOOM!!! done deal, lets try it on the cheap. The view was amazing, overlooking the water is beautiful on a late winter night, It is awesome year round i'm sure. The hamburger my kids had was fresh, not frozen. Thats a positive. I was disappointed with the albondigas soup. It was lukewarm when brought to my table, it didn't taste very fresh and it had a tangy flavor reminiscent of spoilage. The green chili was decent but heavy on the cumin. I had a grilled chicken breast with beans and rice, all of it was good, the chili was sketchy due to the cumin. The service was good, the lady taking care of us was very attentive. sigh...if they're around once summer hits i'll try it again. They still don't have a liquor license..that could make up for the mediocrity. word.

What a disappointment. The location is great but the restaurant itself is very disappointing. It was freezing on the day we were dining as the air conditioner was blasting it was horribly cold and we had to ask to have the temperature adjusted to make it reasonable to sit in the restaurant. We were served chips and Chile and two baskets were brought to the table one basket tasted stale so we sent it back. The waitress said that two baskets came from the same drawer of chips. It would have been more appropriate if she would have just taken them away without question. The meat was over cooked. I had pork and needed a chain saw to cut it. Someone else at our table had fish and half of it was severally over cooked to the point that it was hard as a rock. Another person had a dish with beef in their meal and it was tough. It is a shame because the location is perfect. When this business closes, and it will, it would be great if another restaurant will come in and have great food, service, a liquor license and knows how to run a business, it would have one of the best spots in the area and could be very successful.

I DO NOT recommend this place even with a Groupon, which we did. I ordered the Fajitas mixed skillet and after biting into the first one it was burnt to a crisp. I did politely tell the waitress who just sort of shrugged and said "sorry". Beyond that, for a family of 3 to order just dinner and sodas, about $56 bucks. A little pricey for what I thought all you got was a nice view of the lake. Try Chipotle and sit on your patio, you'll save a TON!

We had attentive servers, the food came quickly and met our expectations. I had shrimp fajitas and hubs had some kind of shrimp dish also. Great location. Hopefully they get a liquor license soon, I would love to sip margaritas on the patio during the summer

Cheers: * Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. * This is a beautiful spot. It's going to be awesome during the summer when they can open up the patio area overlooking the lake. * The chicken in my burrito was tender and juicy. Jeers: * Still no liquor license - naturally to get a good feel of a Mexican joint, I must sample a margarita! ;) * The queso appetizer tasted identical to Velveeta. We had to add lots of the table salsa to make it edible. * It's a turn off to me that they also offer Italian food. Seems to me a place should master their prime offering first. * They seem to nickel and dime a lot of things like sour cream, a soda refill, etc.. - especially for the price they already charge. We would like to give Cielo another shot after they get their liquor license and maybe when the weather allows us to enjoy their patio area.

I gave a 1 star only because I think I have to on here. I would not recommend it. When we left, mine and my husband's stomachs really hurt. That was yesterday. Today, I have been puking and sick all day. I keep seeing remnants of the food I ate last night. :( The service was good and the building had potential. But I won't ever go back-I'm tired of being nauseous and my stomach cramping.

With all the bad reviews, I couldn't decide if we should go or not. My neighbor has been here a couple of times and said she has always liked the food. Restaurant.com had a coupon so we decided to try it. We sat outside, which was nice. The waitress was nice. Salsa not to bad, have had better. The food came out rather quickly. One of the main complaints about this place is the lack of taste for the food. I agree. They need to amp up the flavor. We did like the cotija cheese on the refried beans. Quite tasty. My homemade refried beans are better though, maybe I should give them my recipe:) My husband ordered the Polo Ala Plaza. The chicken was very good and hot. I ordered the Enchiladas Sinaloenses. Like a number of people have complained, my enchiladas were not warm. I did ask the waitress if these were suppose to be served warm or cold. She said warm, and asked if I wanted to remake them. I said no, I just didn't feel like waiting. They do provide a comment card, and I did fill it out and mentioned about the food not being warm. Apparently they don't read them, or the reviews on Yelp. If they did they would fix these simple problems of food not tasty enough and a problem with the food not being warm.

Great location with lake view. Sit outside and enjoy the fresh air because the service is horrific. Only one wait staff during lunch! This delayed lunch for everyone! Then food washwasn't picked up quickly once patrons left. So, one stiff wind & the ducks were supplied with plenty of chips, what a Mess. Oh, no liquor license either.

I can't speak to the food. When we learned they don't serve any alcohol, we left. As did the people who pulled in the parking lot next to us. It's in a nice location with a great view, but the interior is pretty run-down.

  • Lynda J.

I give it two stars, with the hope that these folks, are just going through the new start up jitters. Service was "ok". I ordered the stuffed Sopapiila and apparently there are two "buckets" of dough, one for "plain Sopapila and one for dessert.... Let's just say that a dessert sopapila is not good with beef and green chili. They did comp my meal and replace it with another choice..... I will go back and try this place in a mouth or so. They need the liqueur license for starters and they need to change the menu to be MEXICAN CASUAL, folks ditch the tuna sandwich and cheese sticks...along with the other 'non" Mexican foods. Focus on what you do well, and add rice and beans to all your dishes.

My friends and I are always up to try new places. We heard about the opening of the new restaurant through another friend. The 3 of us went into Cielo and the decor was really nice, lake view was nice as well. However it took us almost 10 min to be sat at a table. After being sat it took several minutes to get drinks and menus and the food took 45 min. The menu prices were a bit pricy for the amount of food we got. Being a server/bartender for 5 years I was very understanding and our server was extremely nice and accommodated us as best as she could. Looking around I noticed they were very understaffed and the servers were running around frantically. I only saw 3 servers in the entire restaurant. I also noticed whom I'm assuming was the General Manager not helping the staff out in any way shape or form nor did she seem to talk to any tables. I asked to speak with her and was never approached, I had to approach her and even then she was very uneasy like she didn't want to talk to me. Extremely unprofessional. This place has a lot of potential, but if things are not changed soon I'm afraid this local restaurant's doors will be closed sooner than later.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
