We stumbled upon Maria Bonita and we all loved our meal. From the old stand by of a kids bean burrito, great homemade tasting beans. A 2 taco(carne asada) & chicken enchilada combination rice n beans, for a very picky palate and it rocked. Enchilada sauce as with all else is made from scratch on the premises and was the best. A very tasty n very filling large bowl of fish stew w veggies. My new favorite Mole place, they have 3 different kinds. I thoroughly enjoyed the black chicken Mole w rice n beans, amazing doesn't give it enough credit, you just have to try it. Really recommend this little hole in the wall on the north end of main St in downtown Ventura. You will love it.

Visiting SoCal from NY. I don't know why Mole is, but is freaking awesome. Both of our dishes were unbelievable!! Definitely recommend a stop here for a meal!

This place sounded good. I like Mexican food, especially places that do more than burritos and tacos. First off, we order the stuffed jalapeños. Nope, they don't have them tonight. The chips that came with the table were stale, tasted like store bought chips. The salsa was excellent though! It had a really nice spiciness to it and tasted fresh. That's about where the good things about this place begin and end. My dinner was decent, until I got to the beans and rice. A long black hair in the beans(the server/cook happen to have long black hair in a pony tail.) The server came over and looked at it, said "that's not my hair" and stuck his fingers in my beans to pull it out. What appalled me is what happened next.... He left the plate of beans and rice in front of me! Like I was going to finish the plate. He came back a few minutes later and said he'd not charge me for that plate.... and still left the rice and beans directly in front of me. I'm not going to eat them, with or without hair after he rubbed his finger in them. He brought the bill to the table and left my rice and beans again. I put my credit card in the tray, he passed by 2 more times without taking my credit card or the fingered rice and beans. Finally after more than 5 minutes of sitting there, I brought the bill to him (and left the rice & beans at the table). Just bad.... and I just saw another yelpers review that showed the place was shut down by the city for a rodent infestation. If the service was better, they would have gotten a better review - hair or not - but it was like he didn't care.

Maria Bonita is the best Mexican food in town. The food is unforgettable in the best of ways. The mole is to die for. I've tried so many different moles but the mole from this restaurant surpasses in excellence all other moles in the world. Pipian is so hard to find however they have it here. One of my favorite restaurants.

We ate here a few years ago and hands down it was the best Mexican food I've ever had. Honestly, it was some of the best food I've ever had. It isn't your typical greasy spoon food. It's definitely gourmet. When we dined there, it was practically empty and only one guy was working. I think he did everything, but he certainly did it well! I highly recommend you try this place if you are in the Ventura area.

Oh, Maria Bonita... Truly one of the best kept secrets of this town. I have been coming here for about 4 years now. The service is amazing and they treat you as if your are a part of their family. I think it's awesome how it is decorated in primary colors. Very bold yet simple. They also hang local art on the walls. As pieces are sold, they add new ones, so it's almost like there's always something new to see. The food will blow your mind. I have never had anything here that I was not 100% satisfied with. The chips and salsa you are served upon arrival are thick and the salsa the perfect amount of spice. The mole negro is amazing as is the pollo borracho. I also love the horchata. Mmm. I love this place so much, nothing but good things to say!!

Truly the best Mexican food in Ventura County, not to mention the best I've ever had and that's not an exaggeration. Very authentic and unique recipes. Mole, Adobo, Rojas... Mmmmm

Sorry, but I have to write an unbiased review of this place. Ever look inside a restaurant and notice no one is inside, or maybe one couple who's taken a chance? We should have known. My family and I thought it might be okay, based on a couple of the reviews. I've loved Mexican food since I was a baby, and I grew up in LA enjoying every style - from family dinners, gourmet trendy places to cheap but delicious taco stands throughout California and Mexico. This was possibly some of the worst tasting, unappetizing food we'd ever tried to eat. My daughter asked for a small house salad w/out onions or cilantro, ($7.50) since she didn't think she'd like any of the dishes on their stained menu. They put some gawd awful dressing on it and it looked like it had been in a produce drawer for three weeks, so she couldn't even stomach that. The waitress kept staring at her from behind the partition and some guy was talking loud and angry in the back. Our food (Oaxaca Chicken Mole Negro $14) and (Chicken Mole Cafe $14) was even worse. Food, especially chicken shouldn't be grey underneath the mole sauce! We just paid, and explained it wasn't to our liking (massive understatement). Just don't do it. Life is too short. Go ANYWHERE else where the food is fresh, and the staff isn't so creepy...

My new favorite place to eat in Ventura. I can't rave enough about the food here. I don't usually like mole, and this place blew me away! Mole Cafe Oaxaca was on the sweet side, which I loved. And the Camarones Mexicanos were amazing! I love their sauces...so flavorful and perfectly spiced. The poblano rice was served with just the right amount of beans. I also got the chicken tamales to bring home for lunch the next day. Whaaaaat...Another delicious dish! I can't wait to hit this place up the next time I'm in Ventura!

My husband and I stopped in after wine tasting in Ojai, going off a tip we received earlier in the day. I have to say it was weird to walk in and be the only ones in the restaurant, but we were warned it may be like that. We both ordered chicken mole. I had the sweet and spicy, and my husband had the mole negro. Both were amazing! We would call ourselves slight mole snobs, and this was some of the best. If you are looking for Taco Bell, this is not the place. The Oaxacan Style of food is fabulous! A must go!

I've never understood why this place is never very busy. The food is delicious and the ambiance is casual but comfortable. I think they use ingredients and seasonings that are virtually unknown to the average American palate, and the menu may be intimidating for some people. If you are looking for REAL Mexican food that tastes fresh and flavorful, give this place a try. I love burritos, tacos, etc. as much as the next person but if I want a more authentic Mexican food experience I will come here. The flavors are complex, as an authentic mole should be. If you fancy yourself a foodie or like to sample different ethnic cuisines, give it a try....you won't be disappointed! A couple of times a year I will order a couple dozen of their chicken tamales which are a great bargain at around $20/dozen. I've tried all of their tamales but think the chicken ones are the best because they are seasoned with a mild mole sauce.

GREAT mole. And I really loved the music they were playing, which is an odd thing to compliment, but honestly, in most places it's just background noise. Here, it was so interesting, I was actually listening carefully. Don't come here expecting monster portions that will turn you into an obese slob. The portions are what I would call normal. What is not normal is the taste. It is fantastic. But not normal. It's distinctive, delicious, and it makes my mouth water just thinking about it, writing this review. We had two different moles, one beef and one pork, and they were definitely different from each other, but each was great. I'd happily have either one of them again. I realize that mole is not something everyone likes, and not something you eat all the time. But if you like mole, and you haven't tried this place, you are really missing out. Pay attention to the music. It enhances the experience. Some of the artwork on the walls is a bit garish, but I like the bright colors they've chosen for this place, and the artwork kind of goes with that, I suppose. Call it sensory stimulation, from all angles -- taste, sound, sight. Anyway, GO. Right away.

Amazing food period!!!! I make any and all excuses to drive up to Ventura just to eat here!!! I have also driven 2 hours out of my way to eat here. That should say enough right there!!! The food is utterly delicious and authentic. You won't be disappointed.

Still the best Southern Mexican cuisine in Ventura County. Run the full gambit and start with fresh guacamole and the Chile Relleno. My favorite is the Pollo Boraccho with added chiles and roasted chile de Arbol on the side. Second favorite is the Yellow Mole. If it isn't hot enough, Jose always has fresh Piqin, Monsanto, Habanero, or Jalapeño for you. Don't judge this place based upon occupancy. $17 a plate for "Mexican" food isn't for everyone. But a great value for those who appreciate big, bold, and colorful "Real" Mexican food.

First, let me start off with I never write reviews but after today's experience 7/20/14 this definitely deserves one! So being from out of town my husband looked on yelp for cool Mexican restaurants in the area before hitting the road to go home. We came across this place and thought why not, it has 4stars on yelp?! Well....walking into the quaint place they have cool artwork and it's very casual. There were two other families eating so I thought this can't be too bad. There was no waiter or host to seat us so we sat our selves and this man appeared who I guess after reading other review is the owner/chef/waiter/busboy/dishwasher...it's an all around one man show!!!! He didn't really talk and wasn't attentive but I figured it was because he was alone. We discussed among us that there wasn't anyone in the kitchen and the ponytail guy kept leaving out back, no sure why, as to he had other tables to also wait on. anyhow, he brought over chips and salsa and let me just say I did a quick side eye when I saw the tortilla chips were a deep yellow and looked hard. Yup....they were stale, so much for authentic not a great way to start off. As we were looking over the menu they didn't have a ton of options but I ordered for my 6 year old as we decided just so she wouldn't be waiting long for food. She ordered cheese enchilada plate with beans and rice. Simple enough right? Well the cook disappeared and I guess started preparing other meals but I kept hearing the sound of a microwave beeping. Humm...that's not right you tell yourself...well yes he has TWO that he used during cooking meals. I went to wash my hands and yes to my suspicion you can see into the kitchen and it's absolutely filthy! There was food everywhere and the cleanliness of what a kitchen should look like was not present. There was a bag (like a tall kitchen trash bag) that held the stale chips he serves. Ummm yeah sorry dude you should make them fresh not store them in a bag that has probably been sitting and exposed to who knows what. When I got back to our table my daughter plate was there...what the heck, I ordered her plate literally 5 minutes ago. There was a really dark sauce over her enchiladas and she said the rice and beans were cold. She said she didn't want to eat and only finished one. No one else ordered because I started looking at yelp and realized that this place was closed last month 6/4/14 because of sanitation problems and rodent infestation. I told my daughter to stop eating and we left. Now here is where it gets interesting....about 15-20 minutes after leaving this place my daughter is complaining about her stomach and says she feels like she's going to throw up. We couldn't even make it to the 101 before we had to pull over and everything from this nasty place was all over our back seat. So....needless to say, we will NEVER recommend or come back to this place. If I want subpar food or "microwaved" Mexican food I'll just stop by trader joes and pick up frozen enchiladas heat them in the oven and not have to worry about vomiting.

Food is excellent. The place is nicely decorated, and the owner has cheered up. Recommended

Oh My Let me start again: Oh My Goodness We only happened to see this little cafe when we crossed the street on Main to find the museum. The owner was cooking, serving and bussing. We ordered the mole cafe oaxaca and mole negro oaxaca. These came with rice and beans. To have my bf state that this was the best mole he has ever had, and explain this with glowing eyes and sweat running off his face, and the biggest smile, indicated to me, a mole virgin, that this is wonderful. I truly enjoyed every bite. Flan is home made too. It has a texture that is firmer than some, and so delicious and caramelly. Drinks and service were very attentive. We Love Maria Bonita

I wish I could give 0 stars. Really. The owner needs Gordon Ramsay to come in and scream obscenities at him. This is my sad story: Saturday night my boyfriend and I decided to walk to this place after I found it on Yelp. First strike: "Oh! It's Saturday night and this place is empty!" There was one other party in the restaurant meant to seat ~15 tables. Peruse the menu and the typical Mexican fare is not there, plus prices are relatively high. Note to self: Must remember to be more attentive to intuition and LEAVE! Second strike: After being seated and ordering, soda is flat and salsa varies from flavorless to sweat-inducing spicy in the same bowl due to inconsistent chopping skills of "Chef". Third strike: I ordered the pork with the Yucateco sauce, my boyfriend had the chicken with the Pipian sauce or mole or whatever it was. He received his food first. We locked eyes over his steaming plate of food. Slow shake of the head. Not good. I receive my food. Soupy refried beans with 3 sad shreds of cheese melted over the top, mystery chunks of meat floating in a neon orange vinegary smelling pool of sauce. I tried to be optimistic, this is either going to be amazing or the worst thing I've ever had. Sigh. First bite, I couldn't tell what kind of meat it was even though I knew I had ordered pork. I think oh no! This is inedible and I know what they've done. They have a large container of precooked meat chunks in the back ready to be rubberized in the microwave and drowned in sauce. After that, we just had to go. Especially when the waitress came out and kept asking if the food was ok, as if she knew better. Save your money. Taco Bell has better Mexican food than this place.

WICKED GOOD! Get the Queso app! Its $ but so worth it. The tortillas are SO fresh and the mole my husband and I shared was AMAZING! Waiter was a sweetie too. Love love love this place. Def going back asap!

I was introduced to Maria Bonita about a year ago, and clearly instructed to try the mole dishes - my first introduction to mole sauces, and it did not disappoint in the slightest (the hot one - amarillo I think?). I've since taken my friends there whenever we happen to be in the area - generally we have been fans of the cafe and amarillo mole sauces, not as much the mole negro (sweet) - that's all to your taste. Great dish to try is the Pollo Guadalajara - I had it this evening, and it was excellent. Personally, I've never found the owner to be distant/unwelcoming, certainly a quiet person though. Always been attentive through the meal, keeping a good eye to our needs & requests - albeit, I have only been to Maria Bonita when it is virtually empty (like today, we were the only ones there). Love the atmosphere and paintings, reminds me of my time in Sonora! If there is any one real 'knock' to this restaurant, it is that the dishes can sometimes come out a little bit cool (one dish is heated to the point it had to be left to cool, one was a bit past prime). I've had anywhere from 2-6 of us there though, and they handle groups just fine in my experience - a dish that has cooled a bit is small potatoes, all things considered.

On the far end of Main Street this is a little gem that can be easily missed. Other reviews have noted the authenticity of the food and they are right. Also, when your server warns you about the heat-level of the moles take heed! I watched a friend who has a pretty high heat tolerance break a sweat eating a spicier mole. Other reviewers have noted less than desirable service. While I agree that the service isn't necessarily warm, it has always been attentive, and I've never felt rushed. I highly recommend trying it out if you want to branch away from the "typical" Mexican fare like burritos.

If there was a way to give this place 0 stars, I would definitely do just that. Where do I start? The tacky art, the rude owner/host/waiter/cook? Maybe I should focus on the food... microwaved and over-seasoned, that about sums it up! I ordered the horchata which clearly was a fountain drink disguised as a prepared drink by adding a ridiculous amount of powdered cinnamon. It tasted of nothing but sugar and cinammon. Then, I got the pollo borracho that I ordered, which is cooked with tequila and tasted like nothing but that. It was rubbery and somehow it took only 10 minutes for it to be brought out, of course that might be due to the fact that it was made ahead of time and put in the microwave for a couple of minutes (sorry gipsy-looking like owner/host/waiter/cook buddy, it wasn't even hot enough for you to get me to believe that it was fresh food). Lastly, I had a taste of my daughter's tamale which mind as well be stuffed with oregano instead of chicken. It was a mouthful of grease and oregano (so glad I fed my daughter just rice and beans which were half decent, but then again how difficult is it to mess those up?) Having a Mexican husband, I go to Mexican places and eat homemade Mexican food ALL THE TIME... this, my friends, is NOT MEXICAN FOOD!

The absolute best, most delicious, worth it authentic Mexican food I've ever tasted in Ventura ... Last time it was that good, I was in Mexico. The chef was our server too. Do yourself a favor and eat here soon.

Want to have some GREAT **real** Mexican food? Or impress someone who does? Come to María Bonita! This place is so inviting. As you stroll down Main Street in downtown Ventura, it's hard to ignore the uniquely painted and vibrantly decorated storefront near the San Buenaventura Mission (other side of the street). The walls are brightly painted, and on them are some really nice and interesting paintings by local artists. Oh, yeah: the food. The food is unique and very, very good. Don't expect chimichangas or burritos. A lot if the recipes come from Oaxaca ("wuh-HA-ca" for you non-español speakers)--a southern and heavily indigenous state in Mexico. Fun fact: Mexico's first indigenous president--and a contemporary of Abe Lincoln--Benito Juárez--was from Oaxaca. Anyway, the food at María Bonita reflects that long and unique history. It's a little pricier than what you might expect if you're used to Taco Bell, but well worth it. You'll pay somewhere from $13 to $18 for an entree and enjoy every bite. A friend of mine who is a bit of a food snob was virtually licking his plate by the end of our meal. Some other details: The chips are homemade (and very good). There's usually only one server (a really nice, humble guy), but service is attentive, too. Don't expect food to be rushed out, though: whomever cooks here takes it seriously. Surprisingly this place is rarely busy. This is a great restaurant for a date, couples, or a small group of people looking to expand their Mexican cuisine horizons beyond nachos and tacos. This is not a spot to meet up for happy hour and appetizers. It's classy, but not exclusive. You'll feel at home here in a T-shirt or a button-up shirt/blouse. They sometimes have weird hours, though, so call before you go. You will not be disappointed.

This is a 4 star restaurant but this review is particularly for the mole and other sauces. AMAZING! 5 STARS EACH! They must have at least 20 ingredients in each recipe. My husband likes the mole negro and I usually get the yellow mole which is extremely spicy and to die for. The rice and beans are both very good, sometimes not piping hot though...? The food is gourmet Mexican with unique dishes but you can order the usual bean burrito for the little ones too. Really the only thing they should have is tequila. They don't...but you can get your fill a few doors down at El Rey before you eat the amazing food at Maria Bonita.

Dude, awesome. I'm not too familiar with Mexican cuisine, so when I make it out to California, I really try to hit up the Mexican restaurants. This place does not disappoint. The art on the wall is really, really well done and the atmosphere it really laid back and nice. I 100% recommend the Rajas con Queso y Jalapeno - it comes with sopadillas, and will blow your mind. I had the pork Mole Cafe Oaxaca Style. I had no idea what to expect after I ordered it, but man was it good.

We were strolling down Main St this afternoon and were looking in restaurant windows. We do things like that despite the difficulty of "lookin gcool" while doing so. Almost at the end of the street we found this place, with no a soul in it. Normally we wouldn't eat at a place without a soul but something made us walk in. What a fantastic menu. It was hard to read anything beyond the selection of three different moles. Few places have mole, and those that do often only have one type. I ordered the yellow mole with pork; the wife had the brown mole with pork. Yellow was quite hot but exceptionally flavorful. The brown was excellent but a tad sweeter than I would have enjoyed. Of course, my wife thouguht the yellow mole was hotter than she would have enjoyed... so we all enjoyed what we had. The pork was PERFECT: lean and cooked just to tender. The pork-y flavor was prominent and stood up to the complex flavors of the moles quite well. Great rice - infused with Pasilla chile. The beans were perfect - pretty much just beans with no adulteration. The chips were more "corn-y" tasting than most restaurant chips and presented the perfect platform for their delectible salsa. So after satisfying our appetite we strolled back up Main Street, only be be asked by a homeless man, "Pardon me folks, would you happen to have an extra 6 cents?" SIX CENTS???????; I wonder if he could have made change for a dime?

  • John L.

Went with my wife for lunch, shared the mole café with pork. It was great--we've had mole before in Tucson, but not something we get frequently. Can't wait to go back to try some of the other dishes. We were the only ones in the place at 12:30 on a Sunday afternoon, so had great service from one of the owners, judging from the newspaper reviews framed on the wall. If you're looking for some out-of-the ordinary, but delicious, Mexican food, give it a try.

I used to work down the street from this place, and somehow never went in. We happened to be in Ventura on a Sunday night, and decided to try it. It was empty, and as other reviews have mentioned, the waiter/owner/cook was a little hesitant, and not so welcoming. That said, once we got started ordering and eating, he was very attentive. I got the mole negro enchiladas, and the mole was incredible. It's complex and rich, and amazingly flavorful. I'm not a rice eater, but the rice was delicately flavored and delicious, and the beans were good too. Hubby had the carne cilantro, which was tasty, but the meat was a little tough. If you like mole, this is the place to go. I've eaten at Rick Bayless's Frontera Grill, and this place blows that away, mole-wise.

  • Cathy M.

We ate here on 2010June26. There were 4 of us. We all tried different entrees and all were amazing. I had a chicken dish with a touch of mint, Peter had pork with pineapple, Spencer had a creamy chicken dish with honey and I think Justin had the Black Oaxacan mole with chicken. We all tried each others' dish while trying to hoard our own. It was the best Mexican food that I have eaten. The art on the walls was mostly surreal as other reviewers mention, and there were a few pieces that I thought were quite good. I hope to return soon.

I've never been disappointed here. The selection of authentic Guadalajara moles are always superb. The spicy ones are truly spicy, and both mild and spicy sauces are absolutely delicious. I'm pretty sure I'm walking out with a few jars of their amazing sauces. Service is excellent and always friendly.

This place is so excellent, I wish I lived nearer to it (or it to me!); it would be my go-to spot for nice yet comfortably casual dinners. Service is efficient, professional yet friendly & smiling, and well-timed (nicely paced: first drinks, then appetizer plate, then main courses. Also, the mains all arrived simultaneously --a minor feat for a party of five). The food itself was stellar. It will make you wonder how all that other stuff you thought was "Mexican food" is even in the same category! All five of us wolfed down our own plates, but everyone tried some of everyone else's -- determining that everything was truly scrumptious. I really think that you couldn't go wrong with anything you order here. (This is where the service shines, by the way: if you need help, or a recommendation, they are more than happy to give you a pointer toward something you'll like. For instance, I asked for a "medium" beer from their fairly extensive list of beers (I know nothing about most beers), and the maitre D gladly obliged -- did a great job.) So although you could order absolutely any dish on the menu and be swept away on a tide of chili-cinnamon endorphins, just for the record here's what we had and loved: Carne al Adobo (cubes of pork in a chili-cinnamon-cumin sauce), Carne Enmielado (cubes of pork in a honey-vinegar-chili sauce), Mole Amarillo, and...two other things that were equally delicious but I can't recall. :) All was accompanied by an ice-cream-scoop of spiced and buttered rice which was itself astoundingly delicious. They also sell their lip-smackin' sauces to go ($9.95 for 16 oz., I believe) -- so you can sauté up some chicken at home, pour on the sauce, and amaze your friends and family! It'll be our little secret that it's actually Maria who is so Bonita....

I am so glad we went to eat lunch at Maria Bonita. it is excellent! I had the Al Mojo de Ajo, it was awesome! The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the sauce was not such a strong/heavy sauce to where you could not even taste the shrimp like other restaurants. The rice had such a great flavor and the beans as well. The serving size was perfect and the tortillas were made there. Everything was perfect for an after Valentines Day date. You will definitely go back.

I was shopping across the street at the Thrift Store. I asked if I could use the bathroom. I asked kindly & I offered to pay. It was an emergency. They said NO. There was not 1 human being in the restaurant. I teach within our city limits. Although I have never eaten here, I would STRONGLY reccommend that you don't eat here.

This unique restaurant serves excellent Southern Mexican dishes, like mole negro in the style of Oaxaca. The food and jamaica were superb and the décor was interesting and inviting. The paintings on the walls were all for sale. Many of them include artistic representations of bare breasts, which some may want to be warned about. The food came quite quickly -- even though it seemed that our waiter was also bussing and cooking. This isn't a Tex-Mex joint. You won't find nachos and burritos, but you will find authentic Southern Mexican food that suits any taste. I highly recommend it!

Very sorry to be THAT person here that leaves this kind of a review while surrounded by 5 star reviews. It has to be said. My family, including my parents walked in to this place and felt un welcomed from the start. I had to walk all the way back and the ONE guy there didn't say a word - only until after I got almost all the way to him and asked if we seat ourself, he said yea (like ... yea whatever) very mean, rude non welcoming - you would think he would be greatful we were there because we were the ONLY ones and it was around 6:00 (dinner time) so hmmmm (says something perhaps?) We finally sat down feeling un wanted - looked over the menu and because of the way we were being treated, we left ... the guy just stormed away from us and I really don't want to go into anything else because I would say something I shouldn't, but they lost my business ... for good because of this treatment. I don't care how good the food is, we did not deserve to be treated that way. My parents just got in from a long drive, and were starting their vacation. Awesome. Way. To. Start. Again, I meant what I said in the tip - learn some manners.

I stopped here with a friend of mine while visiting from out of town on a Monday evening around 8pm. The restaurant was COMPLETELY empty, despite all its good reviews. The server/host was a quiet guy but let us seat ourselves and was quick and attentive with the menus and drinks. My friend ordered some delicious and saucy chicken dish, while I went for the Enchiladas Verdes -- DELICIOUS. If you're looking for artful or fancy plated displays, this is not your place. However, the food is authentic and made with care. In our case, the server was also the cook! Talk about family-owned & run! I would definitely come back here for quality Mexican that doesn't leave you with that "ughhhh" feeling in your stomach afterward.

Was in there recently and saw a rat come running out of the kitchen. We alerted the owner and he could have cared less. We nearly got sick. And the food was not even that good. And microwaved. We will never go there again.

I'm sorry, I had a horrible experience at Maria Bonita. After reading all the reviews, my family and I went there for Mother's Day. To say I was excited about the trip is an understatement. I've had some fabulous Mole in my time and according to the reviews posted here, I was expecting Mecca. When we walked in, we were not greeted but were stared at by the waitress. We sat at a table and she came over after a few minutes. The place was EMPTY. I asked for a basket of tortillas and salsa and she came back 10 minutes later with 3 in a basket, no salsa. (there were 6 of us at the table) Anyway, those were good so we looked over the menu and quickly decided on what to get. I ordered the brown Mole, my husband ordered a carne chipotle plate and we ordered a bean and cheese burrito for the kids to split since the waitress said they were "huge". We ordered 2 sodas and one horchata and I asked for some more tortillas and "salsa this time" since we were all starving. Our food came about 10 minutes later, with 3 more tortillas(!) and I was a bit taken back by the meager portion size. The "huge" burrito was on the small side and definitely not going to be enough for the kids to share. So, I dished out a little of my mole to the kids along with their burrito and figured we could ask for more tortillas if necessary. My Mole tasted like a reeses peanut butter cup, seriously, peanut butter and chocolate with a little heat. The chicken did not resemble chicken at all and I couldn't eat it. I just ate the rice and beans with my tortilla. My husband's carne was pure gristle and fat. Horrible. The waitress was setting up a table for a huge party while we were eating and a group of 6 adults came in and wanted to be served but were turned away b/c "they didn't have enough room". I couldn't believe it . They could have easily put 2 tables together and sat that group. It turned out that the large party they were preparing for was family and friends. The worst part of all was the bill. Our total was $60!!!!! Crazy price to pay for bad food and poor service. How sad. AND the kids were still hungry when we left. I asked for a take home bag but after walking a few blocks, I threw it in a trash can on the street. I really wanted to love this place. I'm so disappointed.

The mole negro they had was so deep and detailed and delicious. We went in because we wanted to see the art and loved the colors inside. We stayed because we were intrigued. I had the chicken enchiladas. The red sauce had some reduced down deliciousness that made the sauce outstanding. The chicken was tender and tasty too. Their chips were more tasty than most. This place just knocked me out. I'm going back soon!

This place is awesome! We tried both the mole café and the mole amarillo (both with chicken) and must say that both were delicious. The rice and beans were tasty as well. This place's moles took me back to Oaxaca, gastronomically speaking, so it was good times indeed. I have seen that several Yelpers complained about the service, but we received great service. The server always made sure that we had what we needed. I don't know if this changes once the place gets busy as we were the only diners at the time. We only wish that we lived closer so that we could become regulars.

When we first moved to Ventura a friend suggested this restaurant. We were skeptical but the host (owner) was very friendly, the food - mostly a selection of regional specialties from Guadalajara and Oaxaca - was delicious. We're now on a first name basis with Francisco the owner and Maria Bonita is our first choice for mexican food. The place is filled with colorful art that changes frequently and they have done a good job with a humble setting. The food is for those who like thing a bit more exotic and spicy. The mole, borracho and guadalajara sauces are not to be missed. Eat it there, fresh from the kitchen (or buy some mole sauce to take home and pour over a quesadilla)...

My husband and I were dropping stuff off at his school and I wanted something a little different for a late lunch. After reading the Yelp reviews on my iPhone, we decided to give this place a try. I'm SO glad we did! The place was empty--which surprised me. The walls are covered in paintings from local artists, I assume. The service was great...and then there is the food. I was tempted to try this chicken dish that was on the lunch special menu, but I saw the tamale plate and I just had to try them. You can tell a lot about a mexican joint by their tamales. The plate came with two tamales, a cup of rice and beans that spread across half of the surface. The two unwrapped tamales are covered in this sweet mole sauce that absolutely rocked my socks off. What makes this so special is that I HATE mole. I don't like any "nutty" sauces. This place has changed my mind! If you are hesitant, get over it and give this place a shot!

This is my one of my favorite restaurants in Ventura. I've been at least a dozen times and haven't been disappointed. The service is good, but the food is excellent. The tequila and mole sauces are amazing. I suggest starting with one of their specials.

The mole was delicious, until we spotted cockroaches by the tiny bathroom. Thank goodness this discovery, which was made by my 3 yr old, was AFTER dinner. So sadly we will never return.

The service is adequate...BUT the food is AMAZING. Their mole enchiladas are redic and tequila cream sauce is phenom. I don't know about you, but I care much more about the food than the service, besides the service ain't that bad anyways. The owner is just a bit shy and it's all about the food anyways!

I wish I still lived in this town.. only for Francisco's amazing Drunk chicken. actually its one of the main reasons i stayed for so long. Do you think they would UPS a to-go order? I love them and day dream about the "borracho pollo!"

We stopped in during a walk through the "Art walk." It was a bit of an impulse and it was fairly empty. I ordered something like Maria Bonita Stew and my husband a Chicken Chihuahua. I thought mine was a tiny bit too spicy but it was good-a tomato stew with carrots, shrimp. My husband's chicken was in a lovely sauce. Service was fine. It concerned me that it cost quite a bit, more than the menu stated. Significantly so. He did have a beer, I did get a bottled water but....I just think that shouldn't happen. I don't think we'll go back because it's too pricey-or something was up. My husband should have questioned them, but as he said that just feels awful. Ah well....

It you are a fan of mole then this is a place for you. A hidden gem on Main St.. They have the biggest variety of mole of any restaurant I have seen. I don't think you will disappointed with any selection. It's worth a drive to Ventura.

My husband and I moved to Ventura about a year ago. During the relocation process( interviews etc) my husband tried this place first and liked it very much and brought me here. We dined here during the week. The place wasn't too crowded, nor was it deserted..either way that wouldn't have swayed us. It had a real nice "vibe" Intriguing art work-- surrealist "cholo" for lack of a longer review. But not graffiti art/ more surreal than cholo...anyway I digress.. I love mole and how many places serve mole? So one that seems to specialize in it even better. I stayed with what I know..The chocolate(brown) mole..I don't remember what my husband got..but it was another mole dish. The service was fast, friendly.. I had a Bohemia. It was nice and cold. The Food came and the smells were almost worth the trip alone. The beans and rice were fantastic..but for me the mole was far too spicy hot..I'm not exactly a whimp when it comes to such things but I am gringo. Even my husband who isn't gringo agreed that it was a "bit intense". However for him he was able to eat his mole. I couldn't really do it. Although I did attempt the ol mix my chicken in the beans and cut it with sour cream trick and was able to determine that the chicken in fact was fantastic. all whit meat tender juicy pieces so I was a bit disappointed. I liked every other aspect of this place. Fast forward.. Several months later we were enjoying an art walk in downtown. I had munched on cheese and drank some beer and wine. My husband stayed drink and cheese free so we were in that place where he is hungry and I"m not so much. I suggested we go to maria Bonita I would get a Bohemia and some beans and he could get some mole..We did this. He said his mole was fantastic and he didn't think it was "too intense" for me. He offered me a taste and whew am I glad I trust him.. It was amazing.. Of course I have been back several times now and this place is just the best mole I have ever tasted. I usually try moles if someone has them and this is the place for it. I suppose my earlier experience was either an aberration or they decided they needed to bring down the heat to have a more universal appeal..but don't get me wrong..They didn't turn this into flavorless chocolate sauce. There is still some very nice spices and flavors with just the right kick.. I just hope More people eat at Maria Bonita because it would be a shame to loose this gem. If you have tried there and it was too too spicy give it another shot. I think you'll be happy you did

I love this place!!!! I always get the mole, since no one in town does it like them. Plus there have wonderful tamales. But anything you order will be in a wonderful sauce. GOGOGOGOGO!

Take my word for it and try the mole. It's amazing. I swear it might even have magical powers. No really it's super yummy. I believe there are 3 kinds, but I loved the dark chocolate one. The art is so-so and the music could be better.

To categorize this food as "Mexican" is technically correct, albeit misleading, as most who read that label expect a "Tex-Mex" experience (e.g., the reviewer who was disappointed not to find a burrito on the menu!). The food at Maria Bonita is unique and explores the culinary traditions of many parts of Mexico -- Yucatecan, Oaxacan, etc. They serve delicious, authentic dishes that clearly take a lot more time and thought to prepare than the red sauce and cheese that one finds slopped over all the offerings on a typical Mexican menu (like Yolanda's or Casa de Soria in Ventura). So if you are reading this hoping to find a place that serves a kitchen sink wet burrito or a fish taco, look elsewhere. If you seek an unusual, exotic, and delightful experience of the lesser known aspects of Mexican cuisine, this is the place for you! The menu can seem overwhelming at first, as there are so many complex offerings, but the proprietor (who has always been incredibly gracious) can help guide you. My husband and I have been here often, and he loves the spice -- the mole amarillo is one of his favorites. Much like an Indian curry, it is a deep and complex dish that provides a brow-soaking burn. I have tried the Yucateco, the borracho, and the black mole, and each is uniquely satisfying. The sangria is nice and there is a decent selection of Mexican beers. To me, the ambiance is so-so (really I'd give this place 4.5 stars if I could)-- I find the artwork rather garish and disturbing, and there is a faint smell of bathroom disinfectant as one enters the restaurant. All of the (usually empty) tables are clean and set with colorful table linens, and the music is usually agreeable. The service has always been attentive. I find it plainly surprising how empty Maria Bonita always is, considering how awesome their food is. What is the deal? But it does stay in business, thank goodness, and I only wish more people would give it a try! Is it that Ventura isn't ready for such a unique restaurant? Is it that the empty restaurant turns off potential clients who might fill it up? Perhaps all of us fans should pick a weekend to go and generate some buzz or somethin'... It is a diamond in the rough!

yellow and brown mole both with pork for take out yellow mole was supposed to "very spicy" brown mole was their signature dish, the brown mole is the standard mole you think of with the chocolate sweet and savory flavor the yellow one had tomatillos in it and wasnt very spicy at all, maybe (6 out of 10) we got half flour and half corn tortillas, and the serving they gave us rather sparse, like drizzle when i want a downpour. corn tortillas seemed manufactured while the flour seemed home made. the specials also came with beans and rice i would say overall the flavor is pretty decent, but the price is a bit high for what you actually get. ($15/plate) so ya 3 stars for the value and ,5 more for friendly service

We have eaten at this place a lot. In fact, for a while, we at there at least once a week. The mole is excellent. I am not sure if they still have paella on the menu, but if they do, it is really, really good. One thing to know about this place is that it is not your conventional Mexican restaurant. If you go in there to order standards like a burrito or certain meat preparations like carne asada, you will be disappointed. If you go in to try interesting spins on Mexican flavors and rich and bold sauces, you will be delighted. The sauces are actually quite amazing. If you want a compromise between traditional and what they do best, get the tamales with mole. I also love the beans, which are a little runny. Some people don't like them that way, but I love them. Its definitely worth a try if you have never been.

I was visiting a couple friends that had recently moved to the area and they took myself and another friend out to dinner. They also wanted to try a place they hadn't yet been to themselves. So I loaded my oft handy Yelp blackberry app, and found Maria Bonita. We walked in and seated ourselves. The guy quickly came over with menus and chips and salsa, and we ordered beer. It was probably another 10 minutes before the four of us were able to decide on a dish, as everything sounded awesome, and different than your typical Mexican food restaurant. I and one other friend settled on a yellow mole/pork dish. Yellow mole? Never even knew it existed. But now I'll never forget. Word to the wise though..... my mouth was ON FIRE. And I like spicy food. I think it was all a ploy to force you to order another beer. My friend says his dish wasn't as hot... but he also stayed away from eating a lot of the sauce, and just went for the meat. I'd say it was worth all the heat though, as it was for sure the best mole I've ever had. The other two friends ordered enchiladas with traditional brown mole, and a nopales dish. Both of them scraped their plates clean. We were all really impressed with the food. Even the tortillas were excellent. I was a little disappointed with the 16.95 price tag on most of the dishes, thinking it was maybe 2 to 3 dollars too much. Four dinners and six beers came to 110 bucks before tax, which, sounds a little silly for Mexican food.... Plates came with cilantro rice and beans, both good, but I've seen more for less.

I live in Ventura and as many have an affinity for Mexican food. We happened upon Maria Bonita as a whim. The sign outside denoting the various moles gave us a clue that this was going to be interesting. My wife can't get past the mole negro. She just loves it. For me, the seafood borracho and the seafood stew are winners that make my decision difficult. I ask to have the fish stew with shrimp added. Delicious! But I have tried them all. I suppose that all restaurants have good and not so good days. I have not had that experience there. Not only are the seasoning diverse to Mexico, hot, spicy to savory, but they are in balance. I can experience the various seasonings. The meals are unique, interesting, and well prepared. This is not your average restaurant and is a cuisine to the food culture of Mexico.

The food, atmosphere is excellent. I've read some of the reviews regarding the staff and I want to elaborate. #1 the fellow who works there is the cook, waiter, co-owner.....in other words.....he does everything when he doesn't have other relatives helping him. #2 - he's VERY shy......some people mistake that for being or uncaring. #3 - Good idea to call to make sure they'll be open. My Mother and I went on a Sunday at 12:00 (they are supposed to be open) and waited until 12:30 and they still hadn't open......so we drove to Casa de Soria's on Thompson Avenue. Just relax and pretend you're in Oaxaca and enjoy the food and ambiance.......it is EXCELLENT

My Fiance and I randomly selected this place while on our way home from Santa Barbara one day... We just excited the freeway, and arrived there. It was a Monday afternoon, the place was empty, which made me think it may not be so good. We were hungry, and tried it out anyway. The menu selection was great. I had the pork Yellow Mole ( Amarillo). It was spectacular! My fiance's dish was good too, I cant remember what he had because I was too busy loving my dish. They have some interesting wall art, kinda cool actually. Next time we're in town, we will definitely eat here again.

I have been here twice for the Mole. They have a negro, cafe, and amarillo mole. I have had the negro and cafe and would recommend both. They make their own flour tortillas which are terrific, but I think it would be reasonable to ask for more than they originally give you. The salsa is a homemade pico and not some canned soup like many places. There is wonderful local art on the wall that seems to be done by the same person and I wonder how they are affiliated with the restaurant. It is worth walking to the restroom in the rear just to see all of the pieces. The service is not your standard Chili's welcome, but the last time I went, there was only one person waiting and cooking. I would rather them spend time in the kitchen than hovering over my table anyway.

The mole was amazing, service was good and we were there on Valentine's Day. My only complaint would be that there was quite a bit of little pieces of orange in the sangria. Could have used other fruit and could have been colder.

My favorite restaurant in Ventura. The pollo borracho is amazing. Everything from the chips and salsa to the mushroom quesadilla are freshly made and delicious! My husband loves the fish stew. Their wine margaritas are also great. It's particularly great for bigger groups since there are always open seats!

A very weird place. I love mole and the decor looked intriguing. On a busy Friday night, we expected a crowd. We peeked in, but not one soul. No customers, no host, no wait staff. Being hungry, I forced my way into the kitchen. There was a couple sitting there I assumed were the owners/cooks...they looked puzzled. I asked if they were open. They said yes. She sat us down and immediately asked for our order. We asked for a minute, and she wanders off back into the kitchen. When we were ready to order, again I had flag 'em down in the kitchen. Weird. The mole was OK, but the chicken was over cooked and dry, perhaps precooked. I've had much better mole. Even the Trader Joe's mole in a jar was better. Unfortunately TJ's no longer sells it. I've always wondered how they can survive there on Main St. for all these years...perhaps a front?

While I'm not really a memorable person, I truly hope the proprietor remembers his statement to me on Saturday. See, I usually eat at the Taqueria because I once saw Beck there almost 15 years ago and I'm convinced their shitty mural adds a lot to their allure. However, the Taqueria was buzzing so my companion (mom) and I decided to eat at Maria Bonita even though we hadn't eaten there in years. Aside from being a bit overpriced in the menu arena, Maria Bonita boasts some truly goofy art featuring outlandish prices on tiny handwritten index cards. I posed the rather innocuous question: "Could I have a veggie burrito?" and the proprietor looked me square in the eye and said, "We don't do burritos." Huh? Let me ask you, sir, what is so irksome about the humble burrito? Too lowbrow? Finally, I settled for the vegetarian Mole Oaxaca and while it was deliciously spicy with subtle hints of cacao and chipotle, it probably shouldn't have been the same price as pork or chicken mole. Should you need assistance crafting a burrito that may appeal to what the Krishnas call "The Higher Taste", let me know. I don't really do much at my desk.

EAT HERE!!!!!!! This place is as good as it gets, but let me define what I mean by 'it": 1. The food is PHENOMENAL! My wife and I are veggies so Maria Bonita always makes their cafe mole and borracho sauce for us using only veggie ingredients and we can't get enough. Ventura has some great restaurants and yet we find ourselves eating at Maria Bonita 80% of the time when we're lucky enough to be in Ventura. Again, the food here is just scrumptious, absolutely scrumptious. Aside from the moles, we've eaten their quesadilla which is far beyond any typical quesadilla you may have had at any one of the millions of nameless Mexican restaurants. Maria Bonita's food is unique, impeccably seasoned, and addicting. The one minus to this is the tortilla chips they serve when you sit down. They're very hard and kinda greasy, but the homemade salsa is yum, yum, yummy - even when it is a little spicy. 2. The restaurant itself is shaped like a long, wide hallway. It's a small place with cramped bathrooms, but the owners have done their best with the space, using the walls as a gallery for local artists to sell their work. We LOVE the artwork; it's funky, full of life and uplifting - non of that negative trite junk that teenagers call art. The bold colors and images give Maria Bonita a singular personally that makes you feel like you're more in a hip home than some business using food to make money. The tables and chairs are simple, but we feel this complements the real star of the restaurant: the food! 3. The service: most likely you will be served by either of the two brothers (?) that run the place. You will feel like you are in their care the second either arrives at your table. Both men are humans before they are servers, thankfully. What this means is they are not going to kowtow to you, you will not feel like you're some privileged mucky-muck being catered to, you will more likely feel like you are a patron here, a guest, and after a few visits, a friend who is being given food made from the heart. For us, though the place is a little pricey, we feel like our pay is an offering of sorts to support true culinary artistry. In short, we ADORE Maria Bonita. Don't let its simple street appearance fool you, this place is great, great, great. Really great. Delicious, delightful and well worth the price. Please, go here and support the vision of this place before the Food Network discovers it and publicizes their genius to the hungry world.

Maria Bonita has amazing food!!! I have been there several times and the Pollo Borracho & Home Made Flour Tortillas are to die for!! The mole is also super yummy!!!! I live far but when I am in town it is a must that I eat at Maria Bonita. It is a small tiny little restaurant with just a few tables but it has really neat art from local artists on the wall. I wish I had a helicopter so I could fly there atleast once a week! I think I need to take a trip to Ventura for some Pollo Borracho!

Wow! Went to Maria Bonita last night after a day of hiking and tidepooling in Malibu. It made for a stellar day and evening!! We arrived quite early... maybe 4:30, not knowing the restaurant didn't open til 5, and even though the owner's brother was the only one there, he seated us, brought us chips and salsa and water and took our order within minutes. ..he was quite hospitable and we felt like we were at someone's home or a very special dinner party. Great atmosphere, cool art and fabulous music playing, we ordered the sangria (delicious!), the rajas app, the yellow mole, the spicy chocolate mole, and two combination platters for the kids. Everything arrived so quickly and perfectly and I say this because after our waiter took our order he then proceeded to go in the back and cook all of our meals... all by himself...with perfect execution!! Seriously, it was like we were family... very nice!! I totally recommend Maria Bonita, especially if you love food that is not run of the mill Mexican... if you want to be seduced by mole and interesting regional sauces and cuisine. This is NOT tacos, tostadas and burritos... and it's not totally cheap. If you've ever tried La Casita Mexicana in Bell, it is similar... a golden needle in a haystack. Thank you, Maria Bonita for a wonderful meal!! We will be back!!

Start with this: "kill me now" good. This is casual "haute" Mexican cuisine. Expertly prepared. Kind and friendly service. Music played at a reasonable level. I'd have trouble staying out of the place if I lived in Los Angeles instead of Brooklyn.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
