Wonderful little mom & pop type of places. Good food and good people. Excellent service. Food was delicious & dessert was yummy.

Good basic food with great service. The sourdough hamburger and fries were very good, and the mexican combo plate was as good as any in Mesa.

Bear Wallow serves a variety of food, like burgers, sandwiches, steaks, Mexican entries, breakfasts, soup, and salads. Of course, there are homemade pies! There is also a small selection of beer. The food quality is not bad, although the Mexican dishes are just okay, but the service is excellent. It's a locally owned restaurants and most of the staff is family. Unlike many other mom-and-pop shops that lack customer service, Bear Wallow's waiters are professional and friendly. It's a pleasant surprise to get good service in a small town.

Horrible! Worst service, food, and very overpriced! This was in a magazine as a must stop place, I'm not sure what they had, but it was nothing like what we had. I'd just bring your lunch and keep moving!

We used to eat here all the time when we lived in the area. Came back to visit and tried breakfast twice. Poor service and very cold omelet and potatoes both times. Not the same. Sad.

I'm really sorry to say that this place has definitely gone downhill over the past 2 years or so. We have a summer place in Alpine so we're sure to go to all the local eateries several times a summer. The time before last the food was so-so, & the flys around our table were horrendous! Salad bar with a limit of 1 trip (!) which wouldn't have been so bad, but the bowls are those tiny wooden ones. Anyway, we have them another chance last summer...service is OK...I won't blame the wait staff, but the food was tasteless & overcooked. Supposedly noted for their pies, we ordered a slice of blueberry pie to go. When we ate it that evening it tasted like there was more flour in the filling than fruit or juice! Not too much choice in a small town like Alpine, but I would definitely stay away from BearsWallow! We will NOT ever go back. I'll eat a Hungry Man frozen dinner first.

Charming, good and comfortable food. Lightening fast service and a beautiful view out the back with lots of windows to open. Authentic small town eatery with mostly locals. Great servers.

great food good crowd No cell phones allowed??, I'm not an electronics junky or facebook junky but when I'm up in alpine Hunting all morning and evening a meal is my only time to call my wife and young daughter to speak with them. the signs posted all over show an old school way of life but I will pass up this place next time in order to speak with my family

I just moved to the area from CA, and eat breakfast & lunch here a lot. You can sit at a booth, table or the counter. My major word of advice is SAVE ROOM FOR HOMEMADE PIE!!!!!! The staff is nice. Some people on YELP complain about the no cell phone thing, but I appreciate it. There is nothing worse than having to listen to a loud single sided conversation. Just put your phone on vibrate and go outside to talk. Plus they have bottled beer and wine.

I've always been told that if there are several cars parked out front, then chances are the place is popular. Such was the case with Bear Wallow Cafe. It appeared that the locals were on to something! The cafe was classic for a small town, complete with photographs all over the wall of local fisherman and hunters. The decor was top notch. The food was alright. Not a lot on the plate (it was easy to eat all that they brought out) and the cost was average. My waitress was alright but not real friendly. In fact, the most disappointing part of my visit was the fact that she was quick to serve the "locals" first before helping me - from taking my order to taking my credit card. If you were a local, you came first. Great if you lived there, but I was just visiting ... perhaps only one time.

after a night at Hannagan Meadow Lodge during our trip up the Coronado Trail and over to New Mexico, we abandoned the lodge for breakfast (really...don't serve breakfast until 8 a.m.?!) and so glad we did. Stumbled upon Bear Wallow. We were greeted the second we walked in the door, took a seat in the back and were brought coffee and water instantaneously. The place is full of character, and characters, and offers a huge breakfast assortment. I went with the day's special -- a biscuit (they spell it with a q?), great homemade sausage gravy, two eggs and hashbrowns. The hashbrowns could have used a bit more cooking...a bit raw and greasy, but the biscuit and gravy were outstanding. Hubby had a skillet with hasbrowns, diced ham, onions, peppers and cheese with two eggs on top and rye toast. Happiness all around. the owners/servers were friendly, efficient and downright nice. Yes, there are signs about not using your cellphones...if you really must, go outside. It certainly isn't a reason to boycott some of the best food around. we sat at the Bear Wallow comtemplating that we'd like to live in a town like Alpine someday, at least part of the year, and make Bear Wallow Cafe a part of our weekly routine.

This place is amazing. I've been coming out to alpine for the last few years. I eat just about every meal at this place. From breakfast to dinner. It was all yummy. Their massive pancakes are delicious. And their home made pies are to die for. Their staff always super friendly.

This is a very nice place to rest from a motorcycle ride and grab a bite to eat. We all really enjoyed our food and the service was great. 3 of us were so full from our meals that we did not have room for pie. 1 in our group went straight for the pie a la mode.

Came here with a group of buddies before embarking on a backpacking trip, and what a way to get ready for the trail! Love this place, good service for dealing with all of us with a smile, and fun atmosphere. Need to make it back up to Alpine sometime, awesome little town.

During a 2005-2006 construction job assignment in Springerville, my husband and I lived in Eagar, AZ. During that time, every Sunday morning we drove up to Alpine for breakfast at Bear Wallow and it is perhaps at the top of our happiest memories. The people there were absolutely the best sort of people for their line of work. We were always welcomed and the place seemed always to be happy and full to the seams with not only locals, but people like us living temporarily in the Round Valley or people passing through. The food was delicious every time. I read the review about pie and I laughed out loud... One time I went up with friends on a weekday and the pie lady had just baked up a batch... I looked across the cafe and spotted the owner Vada enjoying a slice... the look on her face made me order a slice! She was no bigger than a minute and how she could even HAVE pie like that around her all the time without gaining an ounce!!! No justice in the world! Anyway, Bear Wallow Cafe is a wonderful place and if you ever go that way, don't miss it. During the horrible recent fire, I called and they were still standing.

Alpine, AZ is a small town that seems to pop up out of nowhere on highway 181/190. I came here to do research in the nearby Apache forest which is beautiful but after a long day tromping around in the field, I was ready for someone else to make me food. Enter the Bear Wallow Cafe...nice people, good old American food and some Mexican food mixed in there. I've been here several times and every time it's excellent and the service is stellar. The food isn't fancy but it's very fresh (which is surprising considering they have to cart that food all the way up here) and it's filling. You know its good because they're almost always filled during lunch and dinner hour despite being out in the middle of nowhere. I recommend the patty melt (nicely flavored burger on rye w/ grilled onions). Their Mexican food isn't 100% authentic (what can you expect out here) but they make their sauces fresh and not from a can and it's still good. BUT the best reason to visit the Bear Wallow Cafe has got to be their homemade pie. There is one lady who bakes all the pies from scratch and she uses only fresh ingredients including fruit. I've been during the summer and when you ask what kind of pie they have you will be blown away by the choices: apple, apple raisin, blueberry, blackberry, cherry, mix berry, peach, apricot, pecan...it all depends on what is in season and what the "pie lady cooks" but it's all good. Have it a la mode with their vanilla ice cream (which doesn't taste chemically). What makes this pie so delicious is the flakey pie crust that isn't too dry. Seriously, this pie is the best pie I've ever tasted and it almost makes me want to visit Alpine just for the pie. But the people are nice too...

Imagine you're driving through the middle of nowhere, courtesy of US Highway 181. Imagine that in the course of your blacktop quest, you've eaten through the supply of Cheetoes that you picked up in Phoenix four hours previously, and you've managed to conjure a powerful hunger. It's dark, the summer rains have begun to fall in those high Arizona mountains, and you haven't seen a town for many a mile. You begin to contemplate taking out one of those elk you keep passing on the side of the highway, wondering if it'd be possible to carve out a nice flank steak using nothing but your rental car key.... But then fate--that fickle friend--smiles upon you! Like a vending machine glowing seductively in the darkened communal kitchen of a Cisco office building, you see it: up ahead on the left! The Bear Wallow Cafe! You pull over and slam your rental steed into "park," barely clearing the door as you slam it behind you in your haste to intake caloric sustenance. You enter the Bear Wallow and are greeted by a sweet young thang in a t-shirt and jeans, offering you a booth seat by the front windows. She thrusts a worn but clean laminated menu in your hands, and within the first five seconds of scanning the options, you spy your salvation: chicken fried steak. With gravy. Country gravy. Your order is placed, and you take a tour of the salad bar while waiting for the main prize. It's a modest offering of vegetation, but it has all the diner classics. Pickled beets! Croutons! Vats of homemade house dressing! You scuttle back to your table to inhale your rabbit food and scarcely catch your breath before the entree arrives. It's huge and piping hot. The breaded meat is nestled up against an absolute mound of green beans and a hulking mass of shoestring french fries. Everything is coated in thick, creamy gravy goodness. You inhale the comforting aroma and begin to make headway on your dinner. But wait! Before you finish, you must ask yourself--and be honest here--Have You Saved Room For Pie? For the Bear Wallow does not limit its savory offerings to vegetables and cream sauces. Oh no. The Bear Wallow has an ever-changing rotation of housemade pies. The night of my dining adventure featured coconut cream, banana cream, pecan, apple, blueberry, blackberry, peach, and a few others that overloaded my RAM. I had blackberry. My dining partner had banana cream. And diner coffee, which was predictably weak and watery but somehow works exactly right with those surroundings...and that heavenly pie. So, should you find yourself in the above predicament, driving down that lonesome stretch of highway sans your bag of Frito Lay, hang a left at the Bear Wallow. You most definitely will not regret it.
