I was passing through the Auburn area and decided to try El Patron based upon the one previous review (not always indicative one way or the other). The fact that it happened to be right along my route of travel helped me to make my decision. It was excellent in every respect. The food was outstanding and the service was very good. One word of caution: The salsa that they serve with their chip is pretty hot. I loved it. Most Mexican restaurants serve salsa that is too mild for my taste. But if your taste leans toward the wimpy, you might want to keep it in mind (not sure if they have a milder sauce or not). I recommend El Patron wholeheartedly.

Very good food! I am a queso snob and they have great queso blanco, great service too! Go Opelika!

This place definitely impressed me! I was expecting just typical-tasting Mexican food but this blew me out of the water! Very friendly service and the food is delicious!

Eh, I have mixed feelings about this place. It's really more of a 2.5, but I'm not bumping it to 3 stars. I met my friend here for lunch when I was in town a while back. To be honest, the map kind of messed me up and I thought I was going to a different restaurant. I didn't actually have plans to come here. Anyway, it's kind of an older building. The parking lot is small and cramped. The lunch crowd was just starting to wind down when we came in and we were able to get a parking spot without much problem. I pulled into a spot as someone was leaving. My friend arrived before we did, so we already had a table. My friend ordered a queso dip to go with our complimentary tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa was standard. The queso didn't have much flavor to it, but then again when you come to places like this, it never actually does have any flavor. I'm not knocking it, but I've had better. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. The rice was extremely dry, thankfully the sauce helped with that. The rest of the food was so-so. The food is prepared in a Mexican-American, fast food style. It's not authentic, quality Mexican food. Also, I didn't realize at the time, but I never received the salsa that was supposed to come with my meal. Our server, even though he was polite, wasn't exactly on top of things. It seemed like he sort of disappeared for a while. Eventually he came back around, but he could have been more attentive. That brings me to the bathrooms. Eventually, I had to take my youngest to the bathroom. The women's bathroom looked like someone had unleashed everything from their colon and missed the toilet. Additionally, it was a full-on train wreck in that bathroom. It was so disgusting that I walked my youngest into the men's bathroom--oh yes, I waltzed in there--so that he could go to the potty. At that moment, all that mattered was making sure he didn't soil his pants. AND, the men's bathroom was atrocious too! It wasn't as bad as the women's, but still!! Please, stay on top of cleaning the bathrooms for the sake of your guests. While, there is a good chance that I won't be back, if you're in the mood for Mexican-American fast food, come here to satisfy your craving. If you're in the mood for something more authentic, go elsewhere.

Very pleasantly surprised by this place! It was near the hotel we were staying at and when choosing between El Patron and Brick Oven, the hotel front desk enthusiastically recommended El Patron. Service was mediocre, nothing horrible, but a little lacking attention. But it's a casual place, so also kind of expected. Chips and salsa were fresh and yummy! Chips not greasy and the salsa fresh. Everyone enjoyed their choices, and my chicken tortilla soup was HUGE. Again, the main thing is that everything was not overly greasy and really hit the spot.

This is cute little place that was rockin' the Más Fuerte Que Nunca when I walked in (Mexican tunes go with Mexican food, just sayin') and the tequila selection is impressive. Huevos con Chorizo wasn't on the menu but my server said that they'd alter their advertised Huevos Rancheros. Big ups for off-menu love! The house margarita is one of the best I've had and they aren't weak, y'all. My meal rocked, they ought to put it on the menu. Rice and beans were flavorful and the eggs/chorizo were perfect. I almost hated to splat some El Yucateco on 'em, but I love the heat. Would've given five stars, but wasn't asked about a choice of tortilla. I know I can specify, but nice to be reminded of your options. Corn tortillas were the default; I prefer flour. Loved the music, simple yet authentic decor, and my server was sweet as can be. Would I come back? Hell, I'd route a trip out of my way to come sample more of this place!

Cute Mexican restaurant with friendly staffs. I had dinner for the first time here with my colleagues. I really like how tortilla chips and salsa were complimentary and placed on our table once we were seated. The menu seems quite large, which gives me plenty of options to choose from. I ordered the Pollo Rachero from the Specialty Dishes. I also ordered the strawberry and mango virgin smoothie. The smoothie was very good and tasty. My entree was decent; the chicken was a bit dry to my taste, but the rice was prefect. I liked how my entree had sauteed onions and bell peppers. It's a nice restaurant for group get togethers or a simple casual date. There are plenty of booth or if you prefer, there are several regular tables as well.

The foods good but the waiter will bring you the wrong thing then argue about what you ordered.

I stopped in last night as I was staying at a local hotel. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I ordered the Guacamole as a side and the Chicken Tortilla Soup. The chip and salsa was good, the guac ok but the soup was FANTASTIC. It was nothing fancy but it was very very good. The bowl was huge and there were giant, tender, chucks of chicken. The broth had a great flavor. I think I had an entire half of avocado on a side plate with the tortilla strip so I could add as little or as much as I wanted. I gobbled up all the avocado and had a few tortilla strips...just enough to not feel too guilty! Its not a big or fancy place but I'd go back in a heartbeat for the soup and to try other entrees.

Dinner was fantastic and the server was very friendly. We had the beef/shrimp combo fajitas and loved it!

My favorite item is the El Patron nachos with fajita steak. It's still just as heavy, rich, and satisfying as I remembered. Chips and salsa are always good. It tastes wonderful as the edges of the chips are slightly burned and hotter than the rest. It's strange how empty this place seems. This observation happened after we kept seeing people leave the restaurant but we never saw them walk in. Where were they hiding? I thought we were the only people in the restaurant.

Apparently a reservation doesn't mean much; we were met with a 20 minutes wait when arriving on time for our reservation. That's just bad form.

Pulled into a full lot on a friday night which is always a good thing. We were seated and waited on immediately. The restuarant is lively with a large local crowd. The usual mexican fare on menu. I decided on a chicken tamal, a beef tamal, and a beef taco- all of which was yummy. Nothing too amazing but good expected mexican food. The wait staff was attentative. Their frozen drink selection is definately tempting to say the least.

Warm chips and fresh salsa. Ingredients were high quality. Margarita was huge and not the best, but totally worth drinking. Service was excellent. I would definitely come back.

I think I got food poisoning from this place. The meat tasted like mush. Worst Mexican restaurant that I visited.

One of the best Mexican restaurants in the Auburn area. My favorites: burrito blanco, chile relleno & steak nachos. Service is always fast and friendly. Prices are very reasonable. Would highly recommend!

Went for the first time today at lunch. Not too crowded and got a booth to myself. The salsa was pretty good, not too hot and more than just pureed tomato like some other places. The chips had an off flavor though; old oil was probably to blame here and not an uncommon problem in my experience. I ordered the Fajita Quesadilla. It had what I expected: chicken, onions, green peppers, tomato, cheese, barbeque sauce....Wait. what? Yep, instead of a fajita flavor (grilled with spices etc,) the components had a very thinned up barbeque sauce on them. ( I think I detected Kraft brand here) Wasn't terrible but was just weird. Hard to get past really unexpected BBQ flavor. IF I were to go back, I'll steer clear of this dish.

I had heard this was the best of the area, but my quesadillas were horrible, it tasted like someone dumped out the salt bottle in them. The $2 beer on thursday is great but doesn't help when the food is bad. I may try it again, maybe they were just having a bad night. If's it better I will surely let you know.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
