Well, I have to say that this place is disappointing. I almost think they just buy random ready made stuff and just warm it up in the microwave or oven. I've had great Mexican food from California to Connecticut (yeah, weird right?), so I've tasted my fair share of Mexican cuisine. I don't think this place makes anything from scratch. I'm sure the salsa verde they put on top of the enchiladas I got was from a jar. The best thing about Ixtapa was the free chips and salsa and the Margarita I got was pretty good.

Very good service, food was really good-average Mexican tho, not a bad thing. And my husband had the special $2 margaritas which were actually really good! Is fill stuck with top shelf margaritas which were really good and $6 which is average of good price for top shelf -and it was really good! I hate the usual overly tart ones at most places. The waiter was very good at checking on is frequently. I would go back! In fact my hubby has kept going baxk while in town working.

3.5 Decent food, fast friendly service. The chips were good but salsa was bland. Cheesy chimi was good. Friend said steak wasn't good. Everyone was happy

Never been so sick .... Food poisoning! Chicken chimichanga....body aches, chills , throwing up.... Fever! I will never go anywhere near that place again!

Ay Dios Mio! Walking in the door this place looked promising--Mexican music playing, Mexican staff, sombreros hanging from the wall. But alas, it was all for show. The margaritas, though large, were made from some crappy mix. The salsa was the canned puree kind. The chips, not made in house. The "guacamole" was some powdered avocado paste--be sure to specify "fresh mexican" guacamole if you want something that actually comes from avocados. But by far the worst part was the entrees. When The Cheescake Factory makes better tamales you know you're messing up. The refried beans were clearly canned, the rice tasted like uncle bens. Avoid this place at all costs.

I'm used to hole-in-the-wall Mexican places for dirt cheap prices that are delicious. This place is a bit more diner friendly and a bit more expensive. The food is good and the portions are huge. They have great happy hour deals.

  • Emma A.

Always a solid place to go for a quick and tasty mexican meal. I almost always go with the fajita salad (steak please!) but everything else is good as well. Nothing special, but good.

  • Daniel N.

I'm in town pretty often on business and I always make sure to eat here. The salsa is the best I have ever had in Alabama! It is extremely fresh and has a good kick! Definitely worth a stop and the service is great and prices are low!

  • Leska M.

Tacos con carne were fantastic! I ordered the frijoles charro vs the refried beans and they were spicy and flavorful. The salsa and guacamole tasted fresh and had quite a kick. I will definitely come here again.

Fast and friendly service! The best service we've had in Montgomery in our first weeks here. We like the noisy atmosphere and great seating in this franchise. The food was (pre?) prepared in record time, making this an ideal spot for a quick dinner. The free chips are served warm, and the salsa isn't bad. The price was also outstanding. BUT, here you certainly "get what you pay for." The cheese and ground beef taste pretty processed, and they do use a lot of cheese! Our kids love this place, and I expect we will be regulars. My wife gave it three stars, but the excellent waitstaff and fact that soccer is always playing on thier televisions boosts it up to 4 in my book.

  • Robert M.

My go-to favorite for Mexican food. Fast service at both locations. Excellent food.

  • Sarah W.

The food here is very bland and doesn't taste like much at all. We were all disappointed with everything we have tried here with the exception of the beans. The beans tasted good.

After reading other reviews decided this was the place to go for Mexican in Montgomery. Turns out all the good reviews are true. And we drove past the other Ixtapa on Atlanta Highway and this one definitely looks nicer. It's cleaner and newer. The food was delicious. We had chilaquiles with chicken and the supreme chicken quesadilla. The guacamole was so fresh and tasty too. Our server was just great too. We had everything we needed and he didn't keep us waiting. Tonight was Monday night so it was quiet. Hope we can go back soon for some more tasty, fresh, delicious Mexican food.

  • Mikee R.

We often wondered where our server was... The waiting is the hardest part. Waiting to order. Waiting to get a drink refilled. Waiting to receive our order. Waiting for a drink refill. Waiting to order dessert. Waiting for a drink refill. Waiting for dessert. Waiting for the bill. The food was OK not splinded as we had hoped.

Good food at a good price. We sat at the bar and were got our beers quickly. Of course, not much of a selection on tap -- for a Mexican place I would have figured a couple more and/or a craft beer. Food order took awhile, the bartender was moving fast, could have used help with all the drinks/food orders at the bar. But the food came out hot -- was done "A-OK", especially for around $10. I asked for more salsa & it came out within 2-3 minutes.

This is a little over average Mexican restaurant in Montgomery. It's in a good location. The atmosphere was ok. The service was quick and the food was ok.

    (3)
  • Melissa W.

Meh. I really should have listened to the other reviews, but I wanted to decide for myself since people can be critical about whether Mexican food is authentic (this is Alabama, so I don't expect authentic, just tasty). The reviews were right on, though; this place is nothing special. Bland, generic Mexican food at reasonable prices. Not terrible, but definitely wouldn't go back.

    (3)
  • Julie L.

None of the Mexican restaurants in Montgomery make me jump up and down, but if I get a craving for Mexican food, I'm heading to Ixtapa. Good cheese dip that you can get spicy (instead of the gloppy mess that other places serve, that is somehow still bland even with jalapeños in it).

    (3)
  • Matt A.

The prices are great, the food is fresh and the service is always fast. This is the only place we eat Mexican in Montgomery.

    (4)
  • Melissa T.

Why have we not eaten here in the past? Beats me but we will definitely be going more often now that we've discovered it. The atmosphere is eh, so-so. But the menu is extensive, service is friendly (not your usual full-blown Southern hospitality but good enough), and the food was great! The complimentary chips comes warm to the table with salsa. I ordered the shrimp quesadillas, which I will for sure order again next time. The price point is also an added bonus.

Ixtapa is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Montgomery. The food is solidly consistent. I have had a wide spectrum of the dishes and like pretty much all of them. My favorite thing to get is the Tacos de Carne Asada. The chicken flautas are also a favorite of mine. It is hard for me to complain about a place I can go for lunch and order 3 tacos for $5.45. Ixtapa is a nice reliably consistent option for good food.

    (4)
  • Derek E.

The chips and salsa were great but my tacos had an odd taste. The cheese dip we ordered was kind of runny. Food arrived promptly but server took a while to bring the bill and it wasn't even that busy. I might try this place again but would order something different.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
