What a gem of a restaurant hidden in an otherwise quiet part of Montgomery! The restaurant interior is beautiful and modern. The food was fantastic, and the menu contained a lot of classic meals as well as some very unique dishes. (I had the braised pork tenderloin with cherry pepper relish served over ratatouille. So good!) The duck wonton appetizer was awesome, and their mixed drinks were great! My only disappointment was that my date and I were too full for dessert! Oh, and I'd give this place 6 stars if I could because of the exceptional service from our waitress Brittany! She was friendly, offered us great recommendations from the menu, and even shared some history of the city with us. Central was a fantastic experience from start to finish.

We had an absolutely amazing time here. Our servers name was Risque, yes that is her name. :-) She literally made our entire experience wonderful. We came in on a slow Tuesday evening and were greeted immediately. The hostess asked how many and once answered she turned saying, "follow me". She walked us past quite a few empty booths in order to sit us at a table for two by the window. It is rather small and right against the window, but I choose not to say anything about it. I just sit my 6ft 5in frame down in the chair and we are so glad I just took the seat they gave us! Risque came right out and greeted us and introduced us to her trainee. I could go on and on about the service and the food because the service was AMAZING, and the food was as you should expect from such a fine dining establishment. The desert was even better! This review I guess is more about the service we received than anything. Risque was such a pleasure and delight. We will always ask for her whenever we dine there again, which we definitely will. 5 Stars all the way!

I'm not sure what's going on with Central but it seems clear that the entire staff has been riding the struggle bus lately. I went for a happy hour in November and the normally crisp calamari were sitting in a puddle of juices/oil (I don't even want to think about it). I returned today for the first time since the new year and they had run out of turkey for the Hot Turkey & Brie without alerting the wait staff. My entire table ordered that particular entree at the recommendation of another friend and were sorely disappointed when, after ordering, we had to turn around and order again! In addition to that, our server was super spacey-- barely taking the time to take our orders or bring the check. To make matters worse, when I ordered a chicken sandwich and my two cohorts ordered the pub burger to replace the missing turkey, we were all given pub burgers after waiting a very long time for the food. I pointed out the fact that I had actually gotten the grilled chicken and had to wait yet another 15 minutes for my average-tasting chicken sandwich to arrive. Not good, Central, not good. What happened?

Really delicious food with friendly service in a great atmosphere. I'll be back here for sure.

This place is amazing! Atmosphere was great, perfect location and great food. Although the pork jowl bacon and sweet corn bread were the suggested fare, we thought it was too sweet. If you want a variety of flavor to start, go with the southern relish board, fantastic! Our mains were the salmon and duck quarters, both were amazing. You will not be disappointed. Definitely well go back next time we are in town.

Hit or miss. We stopped in at Central for lunch on a Monday. The place was trendy and hip with a great atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and our waitress was accommodating. I had high hopes for the food after seeing very limited lunch menu. Upon the recommendation of our waitress, I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with house fries. The chicken breast was small and over cooked and took up only about half of the old dry bun. There was pimento cheese on the sandwich (which was their selling point) and I couldn't taste it at all. The fries were a nice surprise. They had garlic and fresh parsley and were cooked perfectly. My husband had the fried salmon tacos with black beans. His dish was surprising and original. He was very pleased. Note: if dining with a picky young child, this might not be a place to take them. It was obvious they aren't used to young families. It took a while to locate a high chair and they didn't have anything for kids on the menu. Our waitress mentioned that they sometimes keep chicken tenders for kids when they have parties and they might have some in the back. Turns out they did, and that's what we chose, although we would have liked a healthier option for our son.

Having almost completed the rounds of Montgomery's fine dining scene, the deciding factor for me is in the aspirations of the kitchen. I rarely have a problem with service (to include here), but when I'm paying $30 for an entree, I want to know some creativity and skill has been put into it. I think Central accomplishes enough to warrant it, though - as always - not without a few faults. I like the idea of the snacks menu - a lighter portion than an appetizer. And the pickled vegetables were about as good as I was expecting, with a mason jar filled with green tomatoes, radishes, green beans, and asparagus. The brined worked into different vegetables with different degrees of effectiveness, resulting in some lightly-pickled green beans and some green tomatoes that were so sour and overpowering with juniper (or whatever spice tastes like a mouthful of potpourri) that I had to struggle to get it down. The redfish I ordered was served without skin and cooked reasonably well. It was a drier fish, which put to good use the sauce and ragout with which it was served. Or "ragout", rather - I don't know if the disparate bits of corn, mushroom, and leek were tied together well enough to call it one cohesive item. The corn emulsion was a little better - a buttery corny sauce that did the job. The open kitchen and the individual components of my meal were enough to make me wonder how they might treat that pork belly appetizer. Or at the very least, allow me to recommend it for someone that's looking for a decent meal in the limited downtown area.

Let me say first and foremost that the food was outstanding, we had the steak-frites and salmon with the duck appetizers. Great stuff and on par with some of the best fare we've had in Vegas. Having said that, central needs to work on its seating arrangements, especially for those who've made the time to make a reservation. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation and were shown to a table get from the four and in the busiest traffic of the place. And the table was crowded against a column shared with another two-topper. It was tight enough spacing to feel like we were on a group date with the couple seated at the next table. And being close to the front door, it was freezing every time the four was opened. Again issues that any place deals with, but after making a reservation, it seems short sighted.

Central saves the day!! We had just left a farm to table restaurant in Cloverdale where we had a terrible experience. True story! ;-) It was Thursday night around 8:00, so we figured we could show up to Central without a reservation. We were seated immediately. Our server came up a few minutes later with water and took our drink orders. We went ahead and ordered the Pork Jowl and Cornbread as a starter. It was pretty awesome! My wife and I both had their Steakhouse Wedge. I am extremely picky about bleu cheese dressing. Their bleu cheese is the best I've ever had! They also put candied grapefruit on top of the standard wedge ingredients. Again, awesome!! We both ordered the NY Strip with fries. They cooked them to a perfect medium rare, and the garlic fries were perfect. Our server Rachel was wonderful. We watched as she took care of all of her tables. She's a professional. She provides great recommendations and good conversation. We will be back!! You NEED to go eat at Central!

Delicious! The ambiance was great, wait staff professional and the food was very well prepared. The cocktails were amazing! Recommend the blackberry mojito or the strawberry basil & gin!

This place went above expectations!! The lunch crawfish and sausage ravioli was amazing!! Our waitress Brittany was the highlight of this experience!!! She made the meal 1000 times better! A waitress who is knowledgable not only about the menu choices but who can also suggest wine as well is an asset to any restaurant. Brittany needs to be in a management position or over staff training in our opinion. Very personable and easy to talk to!!! The food was good but service was even better!!

Decently Friendly staff. The waitress really made up for the rest of the staff. Let us smoke outside with cigars. Decent food. We orders apps. Over priced. Entree food. So we decided to go somewhere else. The beer was good. Really liked the out door seating.

We love to mock Montgomery, for having shitty everything. But here we are at Central, a seemingly upscale restaurant in the infamous Alley. Who charges $16.50 for a glass of 2 oz Glenlivet you ask? They do!! That shit is so outrageous even LA was shocked. Yet we kept ordering it, so maybe they will the ones laughing in the end. The service was friendly enough but the WAY overpriced alcohol with less than generous pours equals not my favorite place. Fuck the fancy atmosphere. This is Montgomery, stop it with the pretentious bullshit and give me a real damn drink.

First time in Alabama and so glad I came here for my first dinner in town. I had the blackened catfish and grits and it was delicious! Great service and beautiful environment. The banana foster bread budding was sinful and a must try. I hope to come back for more on another visit!

Okay, I was NOT going to like this place but did. Terrific service as in they know what to ask (straight up or on the rocks), they know who ordered what (yes, the female ordered the steak and the guy ordered the fish), and they know to check back (everything okay). Ate here on a Friday night, then on Saturday tried another local "favorite" but ended up back here for a night cap and dessert. Can be romantic or hip!

Very good downtown restaurant, my favorite in the Alley area. Excellent fish dishes, and some good appetizers (wontons are quite good). Ambience is dark and modern, but you can go casual. I only wish there was more energy: place has only been half full or less when I've gone.

I would highly recommend Central, probably my favorite place in Montgomery. Good place where you could feel comfortable for either a casual or business meal. I had the steak frites and was quite impressed. Really good (and huge) steak--you won't leave hungry. My dinner companions had two different fish entrees which also looked great. I only have two complaints about Central. First, the cocktail menu was limited and seemed fairly uninteresting. That being said, the wine list looked pretty good. Second, the desert I had (german chocolate cake) was just average. Not bad, but nothing special.

We love central! Friday night dinners are definitely the best because there is a special menu featuring local fare :)) their lamb with eggplant was awesome!!! today I'm here for lunch and I am so excited to have a killa meal --- a must go if you are in the area

Celebrated anniversary on a week night at Central. I had taken some roses that afternoon to be on our table when we arrived. We were greeted at the door, and throughout the evening, with many "happy anniversary" smiles and comments. The food and service was wonderful. Our evening started with a complimentary glass of excellent Proseco. Ribeye steak was cooked to perfection. Wife's shrimp and grits dish was delicious and creamy. Appetizer, salad and dessert all rated 4.5 stars too. Fully met my expectations for a great date night with my bride of 31 years.

So good! The place is beautiful and the food was great. Our server, Bethanny, was absolutely wonderful. Best service we've had in ages. We had the southern relish board. It was a ton of yummy food. We couldn't come close to finishing it. We also had the beet salad, pork jowl bacon and sweet cornbread and the special, crab cakes with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The bacon and cornbread was good. It was very sweet, like bacon and pancakes, but good. The beet salad was a little bland, but certainly not bad by any stretch. The crab cake special was unreal! Best crab cake I've ever had, hands down. We can't wait to go back!

From the firsts to salads to finishes the menu pleasantly changes with 2-3 new choices each time I visit. Chef and crew work in harmony in an open kitchen and staff works in synch. Beer list has evolved but should include other craft beers like sweet water, not just Alabama brews. Wine list is always good. This is a place I visit each time I am in Montgomery, often enough...and I am always satisfied with all offerings....

Montgomery AL is not known as being a happening but this place is a great upscale/urban atmosphere, great food, & spectacular service.

Upside: my wife ordered the pork shank with collard greens, and it was fabulous, a huge delicious shank, perfectly cooked, with wonderful sage/sausage dressing and tasty greens. The steak of my steak frites was good but the fries not so good, soggy and oversalted, certainly not up to French bistro standards. The converted warehouse space with open kitchen looks great, it's noisy but not overwhelmingly so. But: service was just terrible. Our server seemed to know she was in over her head, apologizing frequently. She didn't understand the difference between a gin and a vodka martini. She read the specials from a card, haltingly. She tried to pump various wines using language she clearly didn't understand. After our martinis arrived, we waited for an ordered appetizer, but it never came, no bread either; we cancelled the appetizer when our entrees arrived. My wife asked for a taste of a pinot noir, and a few minutes later a waiter appeared with two full glasses of white wine, clearly not for our table. Bread arrived very late, just as I finished my entree. Our server removed my plate and asked if we wanted dessert while my wife was still eating. The check included a glass of wine we didn't order or get, and getting it corrected took far too long. And it wasn't just us; the group at the next table were told the kitchen was out of ribeye (at 7pm on Friday), but when their server checked the kitchen they still had it. Their table ordered the broccolini side listed on the menu, but the kitchen didn't have that. We were in a good mood, so our misadventures struck us as amusing rather than infuriating. But at $47/person (in Montgomery!), we expected and deserved far more. Our server was either totally untrained or totally incapable of doing her job adequately; in either case, the restaurant's management is at fault. Too bad, because the pork shank was really, really good.

I really, really liked it! The waiter was a bit much but the food was great!! Seafood was the most popular choice at the table and I even asked for a side of cornbread because I was in the south and love it. They delivered without any extra charge. It's a tad pricy but pretty normal for this class of restaurant.

Finally a restaurant in town that is unafraid to season their burgers! I came down for lunch midweek. Prices were reasonable for a eatery of this caliber. Love the modern, warehouse woody interior. Manly, yet soft. Fun and casual atmosphere. Open kitchen was fun to look at. The bacon jam and the pickled green tomatoes on the burger complimented each other beautifully, although the Swiss cheese was barely melted. The burger was cooked to order. I foresee myself coming back again and recommending this place to friends.

One of the coolest restaurant venues in the city. Great staff, best pimento cheese I've ever had! The food is only OK, it's consistently ok, but that's it. Never had anything bad here, but also never had anything really good (other than the pimento cheese) If you're going to spend $100 on dinner you can do a lot better.

I lived next door and have had most of their offerings. Central has a beautiful, classy interior. Appetizers and entree choices are hit-or-miss, and the menu changes regularly. Most dishes will leave you feeling appeased, as long as you don't mind that it's a bit pricey. They have a bar & decent wine selection. It's not Michelin star quality food, but it's a good option in Montgomery that I'd choose over others with similar cuisine.

IMO - Central has gone downhill big time lately. They used to have a great menu with great items such as Thai Chicken Flatbread and this goat cheese and fig appetizer. It seems like as soon as they have something really good, they take it off the menu. It's a shame that the menu has so much in the way of sandwiches and pub foods for lunch and nothing really elegant or special. News flash - serving pimento cheese with broken flatbread is a cop-out of an appetizer. The interior of the restaurant is elegant and stylish - I think that the food should match.

We have eaten at Central previously and chose It for our 22nd wedding anniversary. As usual, our expectations were exceeded. Our server was very pleasant and accommodating. The Baked Brie with local peaches was new for us and a tasty starter. The Braised Veal Cheek special was phenomenal!! The meat was well seasoned and very tender. The squash purée was creamy, smooth and delicious. As usual, the Bananas Foster Bread Pudding was a great way to finish our evening.

The Pub Burger is one of the most unique things I've ever had. The green tomato and bacon flavored jam make a taste like no other burger. The calamari Is also made fresh and very good!

Ribeye medium substitute potatoes with grits ... 5 stars ... This is one of the best ribeyes I be ever had. The grits taste stone milled and the mushrooms Melted in my mouth. I think that was a gravy or some kind of meat juice all over the plate. First time eating here will not be the last.

My husband and I frequent this place as often as we can and always take guests here since it's unique menu and ambiance are sure to set a wonderful tone and surprise most people visiting Alabama. The wine and beer selections are excellent. The decor is old restored and repurposed but very classy....ask the wait staff to tell you about the different pieces. I've never been disappointed in the dishes or appetizers I've ordered. My only complaint is that we get the same former marine waiter and he wants to socialize, while I want to socialize with our guests!

Recently in from Houston and hosted a business dinner for a group from Japan on tour. Great service including repeat personal visits by Jerry Kyser, Owner. Not only was Jerry very helpful, he speaks Japanese !! And best of all he introduced me to two great red wines !! Wood fired snapper was top notch. Buttered squash risotto was wonderful, and until now I have not been a fan of risotto. Thanks Jerry!

We ate here twice in two weeks, once on date night then once for Mothers Day. Both times we had great service and excellent food. Wine is a bit over priced for the quality, 9$ per glass for house Cab that was just OK, but overall this place was very nice, modern, and a worth coming back! I love the smell of the wood burning oven as soon as you walk in and the food was cooked to perfection both times. Grilled grouper and grilled hanger steak with homemade fries were all excellent! The pecan pie was also a huge hit! Tame the wine prices or offer higher quality wine for 9$ a glass and they will be a 5*

The service was really good, lots of tips and very personable waiter. Water was regularly refilled, and we were checked on each time. The food....I had the scallops, and for the price, I was a little disappointed with the size of the dish. Others had meatloaf, and said it was bland, but were very happy it wasnt dried out. The steak Frites were average according to the last member of our group, but he also said the steak sauce was terrible!! I smelled it, and didnt want to taste it. All I could smell was pepper and Star Anice. The calamari (app) was the best part of my meal, and the Krispy Creme bread pudding was pretty good too.

Great food, great customer service. Our family was in town for a few days and we heard good things about Central so we stopped by. The food was excellent, the best I have had this year. We were so impressed we went there the next night. The staff was also exceptional. I believe our waitress's name was Shelbie and she was top notch.

This IS as good as it gets in Montgomery. Yes there are, on occasion, good chain restaurants, but usually chain restaurant food off the back of a truck is no better than out of the freezer at Publix. Central is great! The atmosphere is fun. The food is really fresh and really good. From appetizer to main course, you can't wait to dig in when it arrives at your table. And one of the best qualities at Central is one of the rarest found this day and time... incredible service! I will sure be back.

I have been here twice now and it is in our top 3 in Montgomery. The decor is really cook inside and resembles some of our favorite places in CA. The first time I went was with 9 friends, so of course the service was a bit slower, but we were not in a rush. Ordered the pork shank dish and it was very large, but yummy. The second time was with my husband, and we ordered the brie appetizer (beware, it is really a dessert) and I had the awesome wedge salad which was so tasty. For dinner I had the snapper and risotto, was very nicely executed. My husband had the steak and it was cooked just right. Our server was very polite and attentive- no negatives here! We'll probably be back before we move out of town in a few months.

Had the hanger-steak and fries...delicious. Good ambiance...the server was attentive and the rest of our party enjoyed their meals and drinks. Price was fair. Will go back if I have a chance.

Been here twice now, and hope this relative newcomer to the Montgomery scene sticks around - they're turning out some of the best food I've had around here in a long time. The pork belly and peaches starter is so good that a gospel choir should accompany it to your table and bust out in song with each bite (if you have never had the crispy, melty goodness that is pork belly, order it and I will wait patiently for your thank you note). Between my own choices and what my three friends ordered, I've probably sampled about a third of the menu. So far, I haven't been disappointed, and will definitely be back.

Good restaurant for the downtown Montgomery area. Calamari is different with a sweet sauce added however I prefer the pimento spread with crackers as an appetizer (they refer to it as a snack). The salmon was good. The ambiance is nice. Valet parking available. Service has improved since its opening. However, always slightly disappointed whenever we go. For the price you pay, it has yet to "wow" me.

I held my hubby's Bday party at Central in July. Although it was touch and go a few days before the celebration, Michelle, the manager stepped in and renewed my confidence in their ability to get it done. Our friends and family are still talking about that night. Since then, I've been back for a wine tasting. The staff was extremely attentive, professional and downright pleasant to be around. Turned out to be another great night!

I have gone back several times now for lunch and dinner. I kept waiting for the food to live up to the decor. I don't think that will happen. As it is a restaurant and not a gallery, I fear I won't be heading back.

Food was great, service was not. Slow to get drinks, appetizers, and the food. We ordered a second round of oysters...we got them for free because it took them so long. I expected better service for a Tuesday night.

This new restaurant is busy, it's loud, and it's not cheap. But it's one of Montgomery's culinary jewels. The food is excellent (my wife is crazy about the calamari appetizer, and she doesn't even like calamari!) and the service and location are VERY nice. On a recent visit, my wife had the cowgirl ribeye and I had seared scallops. Both were excellent, and the couple at the table next to ours raved about everything they ordered, as well. My only gripe? I thought the mojito I ordered, while potent, was a little small for the price. My wife's drink was less expensive and larger.

    (4)
  • Christopher M.

Great service, ok food. Took the wife and 2 kids on a Friday night. Started off with the calamari. First bites were awesome; some of the best I've ever had. But as you dug deeper into the bowl, they were drenched with the sweet sauce and it was too sweet for me to eat. The kids split the chicken, which was a little tough but hot and flavorful. Wife and I both had the scallops. For $30, you would expect the grits to be hot, (warm at least), and also a little bigger portion size. I'm also pretty sure the grits were instant ... and not nearly as good as seafood and grit entrees you'll find in Charleston. Since I wasn't full, we tried the German Chocolate cake, which was above average. In all, just an average dining experience with a lot of potential.

The first time we dined here it was AMAZING! Perfect service, atmosphere and food. Going back our second time we were MAJORLY disappointed to see something has gone terribly wrong with this restaurant. It was clear when we waited quite a while (4+ minutes) for our server to greet us something had changed. Our appetizer arrived before our bottle of wine (eeek! bad!!!!) we had to repeatedly ask for more water, silverware, plates etc. My food (scallop dish) was COLD, my friends burger (ordered medium) was moo-ing it was so under cooked. The restaurant was pretty much a ghost town for a Friday night and we had two servers try to give us the wrong plates... two different times! A restaurant this nice should not be a "uh we didn't order that" type of place...it should all flow seamlessly. We actually started to get tickled at how many times we saw waiters wandering around taking plates to the wrong tables. I am not sure if there has been a staff change or what is going on but I loved this place and I am heart broken that it is falling off the wagon.... on another note, we ate at TRUE tonight, In Cloverdale..it was AMAZING (beginning to end)!!! It is what Central has the capability to be...and was a short month ago!!

My husband and I were in for dinner last night. Was blown away by the service! Josh was so genuinely friendly and on cue! The Capellini pasta was spot on! Ambience is sophisticated country...Love it! It was lost on us last night as the large party next to us was so obnoxious. Some people will do anything for a free meal. Definitely my new favorite hot spot!

Food was exceptional and the portions quite generous for an upscale restaurant. Service very attentive without being overbearing. My guests and I were there on a mild spring night so it was a bit warm inside especially close to the wood burning oven in the kitchen. I would suggest a table away from the kitchen!

Went here with my lovely lady and had the best time! The ambience was great (love the stonework with polished metal and the cool natural gas sconces they had on the walls--very cool) The place was packed when we went but service was speedy and attentive without hovering. We had the boiled peanut hummus (recommend, it was great) and the local pickled vegetables to start. Wonderful menu that uses locally sourced ingredients everywhere it can (a big plus in my book) as well as locally brewed beers from Birmingham and Huntsville. Had a good people IPA in a can and a wonderful saison from Avondale brewery. My girlfriend also had their take on a mojito that was pretty darn good too. The wood fire grilled hanger steak frites were amazing and the house made steak sauce had a smoky sweet spice to it that really just made the whole dish. We were so stuffed we didn't have room for dessert but I am eagerly awaiting my next venture there so we can try the krispy kreme bread pudding (seriously?!?) with nutella anglaise. that sounds ridiculous in a way i can't begin to imagine. Highly recommended.

Central has been a bit inconsistent when I have come in for lunch and dinner. I had an incredible salmon and sweet potato dish for dinner earlier this year and really enjoyed the fish tacos for lunch. Another time I came in for dinner, however, I (and others in my group) had a very bland dish. Some friends have also had the same inconsistency issue. I have had excellent service each time I have come, even when I was in a big group. The Central mule is great and so are the pimento cheese appetizers. As others mentioned, the room can be loud when it is busy. All in all, good for a fancy meal.

So....food good..service...awful. I sat at bar...no special wines offered...courses not staggered...coffee old..and no dessert offered... I have been in restaurant biz for over 20 years and know, great food and better wine and expect gracious service. This poor place needs to raise service standard. Also..bartenders need to be trained to pour, wine in a glass...served to customer...kinds loses panache..albeit...breathes..when first poured into to water glass with red tape at stopping point..ala..wine jigger..a la outback. Overall..food good..service ..meh.

Excellent choice for American and new-Southern food. Nice cocktail choice, really enjoyed the Southern Mule, with respectable wine and beer list. Start with Flat bread and Pimento Cheese. Really good. I had the roasted quail with crispy Brussels sprouts and fingerling potatoes. Super good. For a Tuesday evening, this place was jumping. Montgomery, you're lucky to have this spot.

I brought two large (100+ lb.) Giant Schnauzers with me here. The waitress served them water in plastic bowls (I brought their own collapsible bowl but did not need it) and stopped by to refill their water just as often as for the glasses on the table. Service perfectly balanced the line of being obtrusive vs. fending for yourself. The rabbit and roast quail were prepared very well and tasted outstanding. The only downside to dinner was a small child bellowing at the top of his lungs at the table behind us. The menu does not have macaroni, chicken fingers, or any other toddler friendly food. Get a baby sitter to enjoy this place better.

Okay, finally somewhere besides Atlanta that has Sour beer on Draft!! Second time here and still does not disappoint. Prices are fantastic for the quality of ingredients and preparation. I had the NY strip, cooked perfect and glazed with some kind of goodness; ) with the duck fat fresh cut fries soooo bad but soooo good!!

I ate dinner at bar while I was in town for business. (I had actually made a reservation through Open Table but as a single diner with tables at a premium, they "suggested" I eat at the bar, which was fine with me because I actually prefer that but can't pass up Open Table points or chance having to wait for a table.) I was glad to see a good beer selection, with lots of local and craft brews represented. They also had some craft cocktails going on. I made a meal out of their small plates so I could try more items and ended up ordering the roasted Brussels spouts, the pork jowls, and the pimiento cheese croquettes. These were all great choices and perfect for a meal for one. The Brussels were my favorite - roasted well and a good sized portion. The pimiento cheese croquettes had a pepper jelly to dip them in and that really made for a good flavor profile. The pork jowls were smoked well and were super tender - my only complaint about this dish was that the sweet cornbread was a little too sweet for my liking. I did enjoy my meal here and would definitely stop in again if I was in town. Pro-tip: make reservations through Open Table, even if on a weekday because they do fill up quickly.

Love the high ceilings, warehouse(Soho) vibes. Pizza marguerite is tops! Crust n sauce like NYC. Companions enjoyed their chicken n cheeseburger sandwiches, and the dr hand cut fries are to die for! Highly, highly recommend this place. Not to mention, good old Bama hospitality! Nuff respect!!

Visiting from Ft Worrh TX, been here several times...the same thing pulled me in over all the other choices in the Alley...The Grand Berry Basil drink! Justin @ the bar Rocked! Our meal was outstanding and the dessert was out of this world. Although my husband didn't check how fast the salt came out Justin still made my husbands Duck dish right! I come to Montgomery often due to military training. I'll come back as long as Justin is here making those Berry Basil drinks! The soup was grand along with the Sal Wedge. My husband loved the Duck Quarters that was loaded with meat, way more than he SHOULD eat but didn't stop him! This place is top notch! Thanks for another wonderful visit!

Central is good, but somewhat inconsistent. We've been here several times and generally food & service are good. However about 50% of the time there are issues, either with service or food or both. Sometimes its a snarky hostess, others a less than attentive server, but mostly the hiccoughs have been with food. Central is a trendy bar/restaurant. Folks show up here casually dressed; some very dressed up and everything in between. It's a bit spendy for Montgomery, but worth the $$. It's a big open room and can get very loud quickly. There are times though when the noise level is fine and if you're in a corner or a both it can border on romantic (though depending on the hostess you'll have to pry a booth out of her cold dead hands). When it's busy you'll be hard pressed to converse at a normal level with table mates. I'd describe the food as new Southern with a flare. You'll find pimento cheese croquettes, pork jowl & cornbread, greens, etc. If you're not a Southerner, Central makes trying these foods fun, tasty & approachable. Recent visit: Pork jowl on sweet cornbread with tomato relish (app) Pimento cheese croquettes (app) Alabama rabbit pasta (entree) Chicken roulade (entree) Chocolate flourless cake (dessert) The pimento cheese croquettes are yummy with a zingy sweet/spicy sauce. Better than you'd expect given that pimento cheese A nice flavor profile. Give them a try. The pork jowl on cornbread can be great, but is inconsistent. One visit it's super: chewy bacon with a tomato relish on sweet cornbread. Delish! On several recent visits through, the pork jowl was a big piece of blubber. Completely inedible with no sign of meat whatsoever. Also MIA was the tomato relish. The servers are generally good about taking care of these problems, but on my last visit the server argued with me, telling me that the pork jowl is supposed to be all fat. Okay. But be consistent. Don't give me great bacon on one visit, blubber on the next and expect me not to notice. I'm not sure if the inconsistencies are due to apathy, a different cook or meat sourcing problems (trying to give the benefit of the doubt). Onward to entrees: Consistently good to very good. The only issue I've ever had with an entree was chicken that was dry and a bit bland (the chicken roulade). All other entrees (on previous visits) have been very good (great fish, duck, steaks -- everything). Even the veggies are tasty! Desserts: Again are 75-80% good. Nothing to make a special trip for, but they are generally a cut above average (especially for this area). The flourless chocolate cake is fudge, could use more raspberry sauce and more cream to cut the super intense, fudge chocolate. Servers are friendly, well trained, well informed and attentive without being intrusive. Overall, Central is a fun place to eat in MGM. It's not fine dining, but is certainly one of the more upscale options in the area. I'd easily recommend Central to friends & family. It's likely the best restaurant in the downtown area. Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Value: 4/5 Would I return: Yes! (and have multiple times) Would I recommend Central to friends/family: Yes Recommend reservations especially on weekend nights. Valet parking available at the door.

When eating at Central, the pimento cheese appetizer with the homemade crackers is an absolute must. I don't even like pimento cheese and I love this appetizer. They change their menu seasonally and use great quality ingredients. It is a little pricey but is usually very, very good. Whether you are looking for a salad, steak or pasta, they have it. It is much more reasonably priced at lunch than it is at dinner but either meal is good there. I have also attended a wedding reception that was held at central and it was very well done and entertaining. They also have a private room which is great for a large group luncheon or a meeting. Walk out of the back doors and you can have a drink or dessert on their porch which overlooks the alley entertainment district

Very good clean take on southern food, the service was well paced. Try the grits, skip the collard greens they are unsettlingly sweet. Definitely order the fried oysters, they were the freshest I've had in a while.

Every now and then you have a perfect experience, tonight was one. Lots to say about this place, but I'll keep it to the point: 2011 Freak Show Cabernet, fried okra appetizer, heirloom tomato salad, whole grilled snapper, blueberry strawberry cobbler. Everything excellent. The chef obviously cares about what leaves the kitchen. Service was warm, intimate and professional. Isn't it nice when a waiter (in our case as waitress, Niesha) knows when to be there and when to not, and plates are removed almost without notice (I won't order desert if the dinner dishes are left on the table). Niesha knows what she's doing. A genius designed the place: brick walls, old wood floors, not a single direct light - every single light is diffused or indirect! No boxy shapes to amplify sound, so the ambiance is perfect. Even the hanging light fixtures are cone shaped so the sound bounces up. Wait until you see how they did the bar! Whole grilled snapper: perfect. White wine, fennel, garlic, oregano, butter. I've had this dish in a few places around the world. This was the best - and in Montgomery, Alabama! Juicy. Each flavor comes through. Asparagus was charred and smokey but not burned. Just try the cobbler. Eat it slowly. Take some home.

On a work trip stopped by for dinner. It was a slow night for them and service at the bar was good. Had the wedge salad and salmon for dinner, all in all it was pretty good. I'd say worth the price. There was a guy across the bar from me, he to a total jackwagon to the staff, and they handled him really well. I felt sorry for the staff the way he talked to them and sent all his food back. I would recommend this place.

I went to this place twice - once for dinner with colleagues, and once by myself. Upon first entering the restaurant, it's full of lively conversation, giggling friends, and family gatherings. It's a large, dimly lit space with a modern yet inviting interior. Clearly the focus is to encourage extended lunches/dinners rather than happy hour. The bar is rather small and far in the back. I enjoyed the upbeat, trendy and lively vibe. My co-workers went crazy with the menu - pimento cheese croquettes, flash fried calamari, crisped duck quarters, and Central's version of chicken cordon bleu. I cannot have flour so my options were quite limited. I ended up ordering the 12 oz. NY strip with fries with a side of collard greens with bacon. My colleagues loved the croquettes, but I didn't hear much else about the rest of their meals. Not even much feedback on the calamari, but they still scarfed most of it down. It was a very large serving, enough to satisfy (4) people. My steak was huge, perfectly grilled, and a generous serving of fries came with it. The fries were dusted with Parmesan cheese. The collard greens were served in a small bowl but looked amazing. I was so excited but had to reel myself in so that I wouldn't eat like the animal that I am in front of my co-workers. After a few bites, I learned the beautifully cooked steak was so overly salted that I couldn't finish it. The fries were not the best I I've had. They were not crisp, oily, and lacked flavor. However, on the brighter side of things - the collard greens were OFF THE CHAIN. I took one bite and started nodding my head in complete approval. A little sweet, a tad tart, and spicy. They were so good that I ordered a second bowl. I finished up my fries (yeah, they were mediocre, but come on...they're still fries) and demolished the collard greens. If you've ever noticed, when you have a really good meal, you usually comment on it. However, no one expressed real satisfaction with their meals. Most of them ate only half of their dinners and were ready to get going. I know that I mentioned earlier I went a second time, even though it was an average meal at best. I went back because I enjoyed the atmosphere, and I had to have more of those collard greens. That's all I ordered, no mains, just side items. The menu is unique, and it seems the restaurant gears itself toward American fare with a southern twist. Pork jowls, cornbread, greens, hoppin john, etc. I found it interesting that, for a true southerner like myself, there was no option to get cornbread as a side item. Greens without cornbread is just sacrilege. I would probably not return to this restaurant. If I want true Southern food, I'd go somewhere else. If I want a really good steak with excellent sides, I'd go somewhere else too. But it's a great place for meeting new ppl and possibly a date night.

Great service (Brittany), excellent valet, hostess was on point and, most importantly, the food was fabulous. I wasn't terribly hungry and the wedge salad was crispy with a perfect amount of homemade bleu cheese dressing and crumbles. The lamb meatballs (5 in a starter portion) had a to-die-for cucumber yogurt sauce while the rolls had a good tooth to them with very flavorful citrus butter. A perfectly light meal on a hot evening.

Very nice place located in the backyard of Commerce Street just around the corner of our hotel. They have very nice outside seating on a little porch overlooking the alley. We had a cocktail for starters which were definitely quite strong but we are not the hard booze lovers anyway. I had the scallop risotto which was the best risotto I ever had and that coming from someone who spent a good portion my life in Italy. My hubby had the steak and frites which were so good as well. The steak was super tender with an amazing rub and the frites were dressed with parsley and garlic which we'll defo copy for home! The staff was great and super attentive. We wanted to try cornbread before leaving Alabama so we asked for a trial piece extra and they served it right away without even putting it on the bill. That's service guys! If you're in Montgomery we fully recommend you go to Central it is worth every penny!

What a great introduction to Montgomery! On my first night in Alabama I hit a gem by finding Central just a few blocks away from my hotel. The scallops were divine! Kudos to the chef and to my friendly waiter Jeremy.

This is a nice/upscale but not pretentious restaurant. The food and service was excellent. My wife had catfish and I had the NY strip. Our app was the jowl bacon cornbread (wow!!!). My steak was perfectly cooked and I was surprised to find that their beef comes from Harris Ranch. (I'm not a meat snob, but I've been to Harris Ranch a couple of times and their steaks were impressively good.) Beer selection was small but offered a few nice options. As with most Montgomery locations, it was IPA-heavy (not my fav beer style). We will definitely be going back! The price was not outrageous. For both of our dinners (one being steak), an extra side, an appetizer and 2 beers, we paid just over $80. BTW, reservations are recommended.

My work colleague and I thoroughly enjoyed the comfy, rustic, southern charm of the decor. Little did we know that it accurately represented the people and the food, too. Excellent choice in the "Alley" area of downtown Montgomery.

I was visiting from out of town (LA) and was really confused when I couldn't get a reservation until 8 PM...it is Montgomery right?!! HOWEVER, after getting there I totally understood. Everything was awesome!!! The ambience, service, menu, wine selection. I was very impressed!

Love this little jewel. .. best dinner I have had in Alabama. The service is way above Montgomery ' s normal lack luster service and the seasoning of the very fresh meat..duck. .fish makes this a 6 star meal

The service was great and everyone was very friendly. The food was good but not great, I ordered the chicken and was surprised when it showed up and was dark meat only, not sure the menu called that out. They had a nice potato salad instead of mashed which was great since it is 93 degrees outside. The wine was very nice, not ridiculous and served at the perfect temperature. I would definitely come back and try another main.

Central is a great place to have a casual dinner, or even a date. I would suggest reservation as Central can get busy in a hurry. I also suggest you get there a little early and hover around the bar. Their drinks are just as eclectic as their menu and well worth the price. When you get seated to dinner you will notice 2 things, the wait staff isn't bothersome or pushy, they're very open about what they like and are very helpful about the menu. Appetizers - definitely go for the Pork Jowl and Cornbread, Other favourites are the beet salad (I know what you're thinking but its an amazing flavour combination). Not so hot on the baked brie - it just sort of falls short of some of the other options, especially when you can get the other options for a bit less and get more impact from them. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go for the relish board if you're in a group of 4 or so. It is well worth it. Ok - dinner. I had the duck and, honestly, I have had better. But, my compatriots had the pork shank (I tasted it and immediately wished I had ordered 10 of them), the Linguini (the shrimp and the clams were absolutely perfect, not overcooked and the pasta was absolutely spot on al dente), and another had the Steak Frites (the beef was cooked perfectly to a great medium, and the accompanying veggies were delicious). Dessert - so here is where I am torn. I hate Creme Brulee. In fact, I hate it so much I never order it and that is mostly because it is one of the most overly done desserts in the history of food. In fact, it is so overdone it has become a boring and ordinary and classless item. So, I ordered the Apple, Pear, Cranberry Crumble with a scoop of VERY well made vanilla iced cream. It was AWESOME. Then, one of our group ordered the Creme Brulee and being the food snob that I am I almost immediately felt like removing the very last one of their taste buds. But, it was good. Not only was it good it was yummy good. Will I order it, not if there is something else that can grab my attention, but I could be tempted. Lastly there was the pumpkin cheesecake. Yet again an overly done concept, but Central twists this demon staple into somethin' that ain't messin' 'round. It was good, in fact, I almost wanted to punch my friend in the throat so they couldn't finish it. Violent tendencies surrounding dessert aside, this place was worth the money, worth the drive, and worth the time. I don't like places that look like something different and deliver the same garbage you get at a chain. Central is not of that ilk at all. It is fresh, eclectic, delicious, and all around great southern fusion food at its best. I will go back.

Has to be the best ribeye in Montgomery. Don't let the price scare ya. And I don't think it's really a 16 ounce ribeye, If I could use my own scale it'd say its a 10-12 ounce but the portion is fine. Cooked Med and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend.

This is a wonderful restaurant and one that we will continue to visit when we pass thru Montgomery on our way to the beach. We tried the pork jowl bacon and cornbread which was insane!!! Also tried the grilled ribeye, meatloaf and the trout. All excellent!!! Our waiter ( Robert) was so wonderful!! Kudos to an excellent staff!!

  • Steven S.

Visiting Montgomery for the first time, Central came highly recommended. I had the Ribeye which was great ....but I think the scale had the Chef's thumb on it. My steak arrived covered with sauce. I saw on the menu the steak is served with homemade steak sauce but I did not expect the poor cow to be swimming. Good thing I liked the steak sauce or I would have been upset. Overall a unique and very good steak. I kept having the feeling I have been to Central.. I realized the smoky smell, the large lamps, the menu and the exposed kitchen have all been done before. I'll be damned, Central is Two Urban Licks in Atlanta's baby brother. If you like two urban licks you'll like this. They could be twins. Central is very good but not original.

Been here four times in two years and the food is constantly fantastic. I don't live in Alabama, but this place would give any restaurant in Seattle or New York a run for its money. A must stop if you are anywhere near Montgomery.

Great setting, atmosphere - But...food was overall OK, one out of three diners had a great meal. We talked extensivley with our server and also a manager who were both VERY "user-friendly" and did what they could to accept our feedback openly. I had two appetizers for my meal, beet salad which was VG, and the pork jowls over cornbread which was horrid - mostly fat and the cornbread was saturated with oil - which may mean that it was "cooked" in oil that was not hot enough - Diner who had the filet with potoates and haricort verts was very pleased, as were all who tasted it. Third diner had a fish dish that was according to him "tasteless". We were just in town for a play and I looked Central up on Yelp - had high hopes, and MAY try it again when we get to Montgomery, but no rush to go back. The staff and management are truly, sincerely trying, so high marks there. It wants to be fine dining but its not there yet.

Treated my wife out for her birthday dinner! My parents recommended this place to me after numerous visits! I love the atmosphere of the restaurant and it has a modern design. I'd expect this type of restaurant in Atlanta, but not in Montgomery! We loved the duck wontons, wood grilled salmon, & german chocolate cake! Such a romantic & delicious restaurant! Good job Montgomery! We'll be back!

Passing through Montgomery we decided to stop here for dinner and some drinks. The food was amazing! A bit on the pricy side and a limited menu but was full of items you wouldn't normally find. We ordered the ham cornbread, quail and rabbit. Delicious! Staff was extremely nice and welcoming. The atmosphere was what I would call fancy-casual. I would definitely go again.

After several days of mediocre food on the road we were thrilled to find Central. We had an appetizer of pork jowls on cornbread with the pepper relish that was outstanding. My husband have the duck- best he has ever had. We also have the ginger mule drink icy cold and refreshing very nice. The atmosphere is lively and classy. Waitress had an answer for every question we had very detailed information on what was in the food how was prepared etc. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and if are ever back in that area will certainly make Central a stop!

Central was on my list of places to eat at in Montgomery and New Years Eve seemed like a good time to try it out. We had a great time. The whole evening was a good experience. We were seated right away, the service was great, our waiter was wonderful and got our special requests correct. The beet salad was the best I have ever had, the black eyed pea hummus, the fingerlings and roasted vegetable were amazing too. I was so full I couldn't finish everything! I was impressed with the staff, the atmosphere and the food!

Montgomery's best chef, without question is Leo Maurelli, III. He's obsessed with local, seasonal, fresh food and it shows. Seasonal menus change often and he uses fresh produce from the EATSouth Urban Farm just a few blocks away. Everything will be cooked perfectly and will often surprise you with flavor combinations and seasonings you'd never expect. Good cocktails and an above average wine list round out the dining experience which is outstanding both at lunch and dinner. Service is always earnest and good intentioned and seems to improve every time I go there.
