The restaurant is located at the center of the "town" of Greenbriar, which is basically a crossroads in the middle of farmland. It's hard to believe you're not on the outskirts of a major city like Huntsville. The hush puppies are great. I could fill myself up with just those. I would recommend taking the white bbq sauce and injecting a dallop directly into the puppy.

This place is highly overrated. Every time someone insists on eating here I roll my eyes. Sure the hush puppies are pretty good, but that's about it. The catfish has always been so over fried it is like eating a brick. I ordered a large plate and still hardly ate anything of substance. Luckily the company was good. Boy do I miss ole' Catfish Cabin :( Maybe the BBQ is better than the fish, didn't try that.

Food - slightly better than average among Huntsville restaurants Service - noticeably better than average Ambience - cosy, different, no frills, down to earth Don't order dessert thinking that you are getting homemade pecan pie. It is store bought Sara Lee pecan pie.

You gotta go to this place. Great hush puppy's, fish and BBQ. Also a neat location, good to get out of town, and enjoy the food and people. Food is top notch and always consistent.

Definitely a place to have "chow" when in Huntsville, you will not be disappointed, nor leave hungry. Southernese BBQ - unlike North Carolina style cold slaw is not added to the MEAT. I usually just order the SMALL plate (with cold slaw and french fries) - believe me, small is LARGE enough. Ribs, pulled pork, chicken - all good, especially with the tasty hush puppies. Wash it all down with authentic Southernese sweet tea...Waitress is sweet as can be, what else would you expect in the South (although Huntsville is considered northern Alabama and not LA - lower Alabama and not Los Angeles). Decor is "rustic," authentic - I like the "old school," reminiscent of the late 50s/60s that brings back memories. Locals say that the two Greenbrier BBQ restaurants close by to each other are related by blood one way or another. THIS restaurant takes a bit of challenge to find. Take the Greenbrier exit (I think #3) and turn right (if driving on I-565 from the airport towards Birmingham). You will see a BIG sign that states GREENBRIER BBQ - you do not want to follow the sign. Instead, drive straight through the stop light, pass a church (on the left), cross over railroad tracks, until you come to a T-intersection/stop sign. Greenbriar Restaurant is off to the right - sign for the restaurant is faded...it is located literally in the middle of NOWHERE, surrounded by farmland. Southernese MEAT BBQ - Greenbrier, can not be beat, good for the money!

the food was great, but nothing really stood out as a super wow- other than the fact that portions were pretty huge. other reviewers didn't like the catfish, but i did. i think the best thing we had was the ribs. pulled pork was good but not any better than other places- you know, gotta have a great reason to keep coming back. well, the hush puppies were pretty good. the cups that the tea/sodas come in are huge. wish they had fried okra. bottom line is this place has good food, but nothing that would make me want to come back over and over again over other places.

Greenbrier is the real deal! The setting is charming in a minimalist, down-home way. It's in a fairly secluded location amongst the farm fields and cows. The decor is standard issue plastic picnic-table cloth and no frills chairs/tables, but the vibe is very comfortable. You get the feeling that there has been a lot of happy eating in the place. The meal started of with wonderful hushpuppies. In retrospect, I should've had the sweet tea, but went with water as the human body can only handle so many calories...lol I had the combo with fried catfish and ribs. Both were absolutely outstanding (esp the ribs) and perfectly complemented by a host of mystery sauces ("white sauce", a vinegar-based hot sauce, rib sauce (sweet bbq), and tartar sauce - all of them were very good). Great service, kind people, reasonable prices. It's big food, so bring an appetite. I give it 4.5 stars - but will post 5 cause I want people to notice!

The last time I visited Huntsville, I ate at the other "BBQ" location. Got here today to find out they're closed, but the original location (just down the road) was still around. The place is smaller, older but the food is just as classic Greenbrier. Had the catfish and ribs - so happy with that combination. Of course, what I remember most, are the hush puppies; light, crispy little nuggets of cornmeal goodness. The catfish was hot, fresh, crisp and tasty while the pork ribs were every bit tender and smoky - good. Top them with a variety of their sauces (the white sauce is a trip on the hush puppies!) and you're set! Service was very friendly and the prices are decent - a fair amount of good food for a good deal. May have to stop in again before I leave town.....

Three words: Fried Chicken Liver! This place is a rare, genuine gem. Straight up diner setting, mostly fried food and BBQ, Alabama white sauce on the table (don't know how food-safe that is, and I don't care), and sweet tea. Service, food, price were all right. The BBQ and chicken livers were devoured. Fries had that yummy corn starch coating, and we had sports on TV - what else could you want? This was great intro to Southern food for this Northerner. Don't pass this place up if you are in the Huntsville area!

Good, plentiful food, quick service and at a decent price. Without a doubt the best hush puppies in the nation! My fav is the small BBQ Pork, with slaw and sliced tomatoes. They haven't been in biz since 52 due to serving bad food... Not much to look at from the outside, or the inside for that matter, but the food is always top shelf. Folks gotta remember that this is the original and the one off of 565 is a knock off.

Talk about a dive! This place was great though and I recommend anyone who wants some good BBQ to make sure you go to Greenbrier! I had the pork BBQ with slaw. The hush puppies that are brought to the table are incredible; probably the best hush puppies that I have ever had. The portions are large, so order the small if you want an average-sized lunch. Looking forward to going back here!

Now that's some good down home cookin' This place is a hidden gem just outside the Huntsville city limits. My visit to the Old Greenbrier came from a local recommendation. I set out with a group of friends for an early dinner. It's pretty convenient, just a couple miles off 565 in Huntsville. Don't confuse the Old Greenbrier with another restaurant with a similar name just off the highway. The Old Greenbrier is further down Greenbrier Rd near Route 20. I love the decor at the Old Greenbrier, it's got that simple down home country feel to it that just makes you want to stay and eat! There appears to been several dining areas, my group sat all the way in the far corner with a great view out over the corn fields. Soon after we sat down we were met with our first basket of the endless hush puppies. Yes, endless hush puppies, unless you say uncle they keep coming. These are no ordinary hush puppies, these are probably some of the best puppies I've ever had. Loved them! Just pace yourself, the main portions here are huge! I order the combination plate which includes two meats, cole slaw, and those puppies. I chose the ribs and a catfish filet for my selections but you can chose any two meats on the menu including shrimp, oysters, you name it. The ribs are huge!!! I found the outside of the ribs just a bit tough but I added some of the house BBQ sauce on the table and softened them right up. The catfish filets were tasty. A friend of mine ordered the rib plate as a main course and could not finish 3/4 of them. I came close to finishing too but don't regret all the puppies I had before the plate showed up. Let's talk dessert, because there's always room for dessert! How about $0.25 ice cream cones? Serve yourself soft serve cones and dishes, the perfect end to a delicious meal. I highly recommend the Old Greenbrier, well worth the trip outside the Huntsville city limits. So grab a group of friends and head on out, they definitely are big group friendly. I just have to add that I love the location! Buried in the heart of farmland surrounded by corn fields, it definitely added to the overall experience here.

Called in an order for the fried whole catfish. We picked up the order and got home before we discovered we had the fillet. Called back to tell them of the mistake and they said to bring it back and to pick up our right order. Well this time we checked it before we left. Got home and I was disappointed. The hush puppies are over cooked, the fish was not seasoned at all and they were scored three times on each side in an effort I can only assume was meant to cook the fish faster but made the fish greasy. Not a sprinkle of seasoning in the batter. They were so greasy! Yuck. Piled in the onion, Cole slaw and tarter sauce to make it taste like something!! The potatoes were the only saving grace. We won't be back.

  • Nic A.

Just alright. Best way I can describe it. White sauce was good, that and the hush puppies. Can't say I'd go back as it didn't change my BBQ world. Most certainly got the side eye from a church lady because I was in my casual clothing and obviously had not attended church that day.

Stopped in for a late lunch yesterday, first time we've been to the Greenbrier Restaurant. Complementary hushpuppies were very good, some of the best we've ever had. I ordered a large Pork Platter, my fiancee went with Rib dinner. Pork was very good, sides were excellent (sweet potato and cole slaw). My fiancee felt her ribs were a bit dry, they did have a crispy outer coat. But I felt they were good, maybe not the best ribs I've ever tasted, but decent. And the portion size was very generous. For a quarter, you can go up to the self-serve ice cream and get yourself a little cup of soft serve. Nice way to end an excellent meal. Service was very good also. Greenbrier Restaurant is a strong 4 Star rating ( I would've rated this place 5 Stars if the ribs were a bit better). We'd certainly come back again.

Great homey place. Hush puppies are fantastic. Pulled pork is good too. Portions are big, so come hungry. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. On a side note, if you want a gallon of sweet tea to take home, bring a container. Otherwise you might end up getting a gallon pickle jar. Tea is good just a little pickled, lol

Stopped here on our way home from vacation. My travel companion remembered eating here over ten years ago. Walked in a little before 1 pm on a Monday, had lunch and were walking out within a half hour. Super quick service, friendly server, they bring out hushpuppies while you wait, and the menu is straightforward with only the essentials. Vinegar coleslaw was great and comes on the pulled pork sandwich, along with pickles. Pork was delicious, and I was glad they had three sauces--I prefer vinegar hot sauce, while my friend opted for the traditional Alabama white sauce. They also had barbecue sauce for those so inclined. I hear the pie is good, but we were stuffed! Only two miles off I565--don't miss it if you're traveling I65!

The sweet tea and bottomless Hushpuppies were a great start. I had the seafood combo- it was pretty tasty. My Hon had the BBQ which was pretty good too.

In the area for business and had the good fortune of stumbling across this little gem. Actually, "stumbling" isn't quite the right word. I actively searched for the best bbq in town by asking the locals... and I couldn't have been more pleased with the results. First and foremost, kudos for the hospitality. I walked in the door right at closing time as the owner was counting his bills for the night. And while he could have apologetically ushered me back into the rain, he kindly allowed me to make a purchase. Pulled pork was tender and flavorful. Hush puppies were crispy where they needed to be, and fluffy everywhere else. My only regret is not getting the sweet tea. Or even a coke. Would have been the perfect cap for the meal... but no fault of theirs! Green Brier is what I hoped it would be... and more.

This restaurant has been here for as long as I can remember. It's on my way home from work. I've gotten fried catfish and their half chicken as take out maybe twice in the last year, but have visited **numerous** times in my life. I've attended many parties in their banquet-type room and over the decades and changes in ownership, have just noticed a decline in the cleanliness. I just checked the ADPH web site and here is their currently posted health score as of ~ 2 months ago: Score: 78 | Smoke Free: Yes | Inspection date: 10/21/2014. I wish some owners with resources and drive would clean the place up a little bit. It has really declined in this one area over the decades. I think the outdoor painting on the west exterior wall is cute and maybe new-ish, but the back of the building always looks like it's about to collapse to me. I think since the other Greenbrier (BBQ restaurant around the corner) closed, I'll be sticking with Chuck Wagon.

Awesome catfish and ribs! Love the place and the waitresses! Miss this kinda food up in Colorado!

This is good southern food the hush puppies seem a little over done or the oil was old. Otherwise I'd given 4 stars.

I've been coming here since I was a kid and just moved back from Colorado, so I wanted to check GB out to see if they've still got it. Number 1, be prepared to be very full, as I take half of my meal home to eat later. I have to say GB has the second best hush puppies I've ever eaten in my life. You can't go wrong with their fried catfish (tip: order whole catfish, not filet). The service here is always fast and friendly spiked with that southern hospitality that you don't find at every restaurant as you use to in the south. Try the hush puppies with the "rib sauce." I don't know what it is about this sauce because it is simple and ketchup based with a smoky flavor, but I love it. In the past I have had their bbq as well and it was pretty good. This time I had ribs with my catfish and oysters, but I have to say I was upset because they were probably the driest ribs I've ever had in my life. I will give them one more try on another visit, therefore yes I'm still a fan and will return.

  • Panda B.

It got way too run down for me. The food seemed to decline as well. Their hushpuppies were borderline burnt. :( So they got the outside painted (some sort of landscape picture) but done nothing with the inside? I hope it's only an off-day because I really like (liked) this place. I'll give it one or two more tries before throwing in a white towel.

  • Mark M.

The best menu item here appears to be the hushpuppies...The ribs I ordered last evening weren't fit to feed to my dog. Reminded me of unseasoned shoe leather. No trophies here. What a disappointment and waste of gas...

Greenbrier Restaurant rests out amongst the farmland North of Madison. The restaurant sign is fading and the exterior is totally nondescript. At 10 AM on a Thursday afternoon a local lady wanting to order take out and Oregonian me were waiting outside the Greenbrier Restaurant. At 10:45 a server unlocked the front door. She said, "I'm sorry to have kept y'all waiting but I was so busy that I lost track of time." Under normal circumstances I would deduct a star for that but I was so charmed by the Greenbrier that I just laughed it off. Despite the nondescript exterior, the Greenbrier Restaurant is actually a cheery and fun place. The parking lot is large and there is plenty of seating inside. Most of the locals seem to be ordering catfish. Greenbrier Restaurant does a huge business in takeout barbecue. Without even asking the servers bring you a basket of hush puppies. Could easily make a meal here of just the hush puppies. The prices here are fantastic. Even with side dishes you can easily stay around $10. On my visit I went for the Large Bar-B-Cue Pork dinner with sides of cole slaw and French fries. An absolute masterpiece of a meal. The cole slaw was Alabama fine chop style and oh so delicious. I smothered my pulled pork in Greenbrier's red sauce and it was enough to put me into fits of ecstasy. The French fries were also first rate. If you're a lover of American comfort food then you owe it to yourself to go to the Greenbrier Restaurant. Experience a relic from the past before it goes extinct.

We love greenbriar - the location off 565 - tried to go there on July 1st for dinner but sign on door said 'closed for remodeling'. Doesn't look promising - sad face! Will have to try their other location another time. The hush puppies are great and worth the drive from Madison!

Amazing how a place like this can make a first timer feel nostalgic. Drive past the railroad tracks and cow fields and meet Old Greenbrier BBQ at the crossroads. Everyone there seemed happy and relaxed. I was instantly greeted with smiles when I arrived. The staff was super friendly and attentive. After seating myself I was quickly brought a drink and some of the infamous hush puppies. I ordered a small BBQ pork plate with baked potato. The greasy little cornmeal pillows known as hush puppies were delicious. Super crispy exterior; soft, dense interior; plenty onion flavor to make this Southern gal happy. Two types of sauce graced the table... no surprise in north Alabama, white sauce and a vinegar based BBQ sauce. The white sauce is the typical mayo based sauce with a little tang. It was a good partner for the pups. I'm not sure what the deal is with the vinegar based sauce up here but it's just way too tangy. Thankfully they had a thicker option upon request. Although it looked exactly like ketchup and I was convinced for the first few bites that she misheard me and handed me a second bottle of ketchup. Then I realized the smokiness was actually from the sauce and less from the BBQ. The BBQ was moist and tender but not very smokey. The cole slaw was finely chopped and all vinegar. My personal preference is a mayo based cole slaw. I added some of the white sauce so I could enjoy it more. With the portion size and the complimentary hush puppies the $8+tax seemed reasonable. I certainly left there stuffed like a turkey. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again but can understand the support from locals. BTW the hushpuppies and catfish are on the Alabama's Top 100 Dishes to Try list created by the Alabama Tourism Dept.

Country road. Take me home. To the place. I belong... Off of the beaten path, literally, is the Greenbrier where one can get a truly country meal. I was tickled by the decor and the prices which were the most reasonable that I had ever experienced. We were seated immediately even though church just let out. Greenbrier has ample seating with multiple rooms and can easily accommodate any size party of your choosing. Our small party of two were seated in this back, wood paneled room. Think of your grandma's country basement. Wood chairs, blue and white vinyl tablecloths and a stuffed animal trout hanging from the ceiling finished off the decor. I did notice the free soft serve machine on the walk back though. We weren't necessarily there for the experience but rather for the food. We had a great recommendation and went for it. I opted for the pulled pork bbq sandwich ($3.50) with slaw and my fellow diner had the two meat sampler ($13.95). The pork was so tender and juicy that bbq sauce wasn't even required. And all of my former reviewers are correct, the hush puppies are savory! The catfish was cooked just right and the tea was plentiful. Outstanding service all around!

NOT SAFE. Heath Score of 74, Repeat offender, last score was only 80. Ice maker needs cleaning. Dirty bins and utensils stored as clean. Cheese 54, Ham 55, Chicken 57, Ribs 54, Hamburgers 120. Damaged lids & bins. Great hushpuppies are not worth getting sick.

This place was great. Only thing is that it's in a dry county. So if you're not from the area be aware there is no beer at this place. That being said the good was great. The service was friendly enough. They were straight to the point. I had the combination plate. Selection of any two meats. My selection was catfish and pulled pork. I was quite a happy camper. My dining partners ordered ribs and pulled pork. All in all the table was not disappointed. For us Northerners, they have something down here called "white BBQ sauce". It's mayo based and really good. We debated for a bit if it should be sitting on the table vice the fridge but that ended as soon as the first basket of those hush puppies landed on our table! Those things are addicting and unlimited. Fantastically fried and golden delicious. The catfish is pond raised on site and was battered and deep fried like my mom would make. I didn't finish the pork but it is gonna make for a tasty lunch this afternoon. There was also coleslaw. A little on the sweet side for my taste but it was still good. And it's minced, which I had never seen before. But it definitely doesn't take away from its goodness. The Greenbrier is also inexpensive. My combination plate was only $15. It came with two meats, choice of one side (French fries, salad, baked potato, or baked sweet potato), and unlimited hush puppies! All in all this was a great place to eat. It is a bit out of the way so don't be scared of the drive.

I decided to try this place because I wanted to try the catfish. Even though it was about 6 miles from my hotel, once you get off the freeway in Greenbrier, you pass this Target distribution warehouse then you're in the middle of nowhere, I was kind of getting worried that nothing was even out there, total dark and open fields on both sides. When I first got there, they gave me a basket of hushpuppies, they are pretty good. I never cared much for hushpuppies before, never having good ones but now I like it. I ordered the combination plate, catfish fillet and pulled pork. It comes on a huge platter way more than I could ever finish. I was full having only ate half of what was on the plate but couldn't stop eating the food. The catfish was a little on the extra crunch side although it was great, crunchy on the outside and super moist on the inside. The pulled pork was good and I like the vinegar bbq sauce. The slaw was also good, I never had slaw that was finely chopped before but I like it. Service was great as everywhere else I've been to so far in Huntsville. This place was good but a little over hyped.

I love this little hole in the wall restaurant. I live nearby, and I feel like it's a local treasure. Not sure how to tell an out of towner how to even get here. However, it is hands down the best fried catfish, fried ham, and hush puppies you could ever have! Their pulled pork is very good too. The service is hit or miss, depending on who is working. It's either great southern hospitality, or someone who seems to hate their job. Seats aren't very comfortable, and I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for upscale. This is down home cooking and the atmosphere is down home as well.

Good lunches, more hush puppies than you can eat. White and Red and vineager BBQ Sauces. It was pretty good but more a 3.5 star than four but i'll round up for this one. Personally I think the atlanta and nashville bbqs I've had have been better.

This is the ORIGINAL Greenbrier - skip the one that's directly off I-565! Any place that serves you hushpuppies when you sit down plus the awesome down home service is always five stars!! Since I was leaving the South for a while, I opted for the Catfish Fillet and BBQ Pork combo ($11). Combined with the sweet potato and the cole slaw, there's definitely enough food for two average appetites. There's also 25 cent soft serve ice cream if you didn't get enough!! Great place to eat just a couple of miles from the Huntsville Airport.

Unlimited hush puppies brought hot and steaming to your table before you even get situated? Yes please! Multiple sauces for all tastes? Check. This place rocks! Our friend and tour guide for Huntsville brought us to Greenbrier for an authentic southern meal. My mom and I shared the cat fish - it was amazing! Husband and tour guide had the bbq chicken. The sweet potatoes were practically candy, melting in our mouths and warming our hearts. The portions are so generous I'm glad i shared a plate as there is no way I would have been able to finish the whole thing - especially not after filling up on all those yummy hush puppies! The $0.25 soft serve ice cream was the cherry on top of a deliciously decadent meal. The service was friendly, fast and accommodating. Needless to say we'll be back the next time we're in town. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but step inside and be transported to simpler times with complex Southern culinary genius. Insider's Tip: Echoing the sentiment of another reviewer, our friend also said that this is the only location worth going to as the other one isn't nearly as delicious or consistent.

The locals like this place, but I think it's a grease spoon waiting for a heart attack. Heart burn city. Grease, grease, and more grease. Even on the walls.

I love this place so much, I cannot understand negative reviews, I mean come on, who the heck reviews a grilled cheese sandwich from a BBQ restaurant?!? I absolutely love the whole catfish and hushpuppies. I admit, the BBQ is good, but not great, but I go here for the catfish. The ambience is exactly what one would expect, homey and yes, slightly tacky. We are not talking New York City, we are talking' Greenbriar Alabama, it barely qualifies as a wide spot in the road.

Awesomely tasty food! Endless basket of hush puppies, the best chicken fingers and pulled pork I've ever had in a long time and your choice of BBQ sauces... you will become addicted to the traditional Northern Alabama white BBQ sauce; it goes great with the pups!

    (5)
  • Rick E.

This local BBQ joint is slammin. They serve you fresh hush puppies as soon as you are seated and have delicious white BBQ sauce. BBQ ribs have a dry rub marinade and the meat fall off the bone. This is how southern BBQ is supposed to be! Sweet potato! GET IT. It is sooo damn good, I get two! Cole slaw - kinda weak Sweet tea - Mmmm sweet tea Catfish - a little on the crunchy side Atmosphere - True Alabama feeling and the service is superb. Went twice in one week and want to go back!

This review is for my fellow Jews! Meaning, I didn't eat the catfish or the pork, so this review is on the grilled cheese. Oh yes. Believe it. The atmosphere is depressing. I like quaint places with a little bit of character to them, but this place is just... icky. It's dark and crowded and very Dollar General-esque. The tablecloth felt greasy to the touch and I make much better grilled cheese at home, since I use real cheese and not pasteurized processed cheesefood. Obviously not a Jewy haven at any rate, but if your ex's stepmother just absolutely swears by it and insists that you eat there, plan on grabbing a hamburger afterward.

I moved away from this area 11 years ago. At that time, old greenbrier had roaches. My family has DRUG me there on 3 different visits home and I've walked out each time because there were roaches in our food, on our table, or in general areas. I went back today, after 5 years, and they still have roaches. One crawled across my shirt when we were waiting on our meal and I walked out. I've never lived with roaches. I do not find this acceptable. I intend to report their business to the AL health department and I hope this keeps people from similar experiences. DISGUSTING!

For some godforsaken reason, I pass the Greenbrier Restaurant a couple of times a week, so pop in for lunch or dinner. If you are here, you are at a crossroads in farm country. Arrrrrrrr, get off my land. The BBQ is nothing special, the BBQ sauce is not that good. The portions are freaking huge, too much even for a FB like me. The hush puppies are probably the best I have had, and I will come back for them. This place makes me wish for real BBQ.......Rendezvous in Memphis.....Mmmmmmmmmm.

I grew up eating at Greenbrier. To avoid any confusion, this is the old original Greenbrier that is across from the gin in "downtown" Greenbrier. The one located near I-565 isn't worth the trouble. I should note that even though I grew up in north Alabama eating traditional Southern food that I not a major fan of pork BBQ or catfish. I don't eat a lot of fried food, because I don't like greasy food. Most people rave about the catfish or the pork BBQ at Greenbrier, but I want to tell you about the fried chicken livers. They are possibly the BEST chicken livers EVER! They are crispy & crunchy, but still moist & tender! The complementary hush puppies are the only hush puppies that I eat. I prefer mine with white BBQ sauce, but they are good on their own. Be sure to try them with all the sauces on the table & pick your favorite! When I eat the pork there, I usually top it with the rib sauce & the BBQ sauce. The rib sauce is a homemade version of what most of the world thinks of as BBQ sauce. The BBQ sauce is the typical pork BBQ sauce of the area. It is vinegar-based & has a good bit of cayenne. It is important to note that I actually eat the pork here by choice, because that's rare for me. My dad is a huge fan of their ribs & with that sauce who can blame him. Another traditional Southern element is that you can get sliced onion on the side. I don't know of a Southern country kitchen that doesn't serve raw onion (& in the summer, tomato) to accompany every meal. This is not an upscale restaurant & doesn't claim to be, but if you want good Southern food in a fun atmosphere then eat here!

Wow is all I have to say about this place. They have traditional barbecue and they do it right. They have a variety of sauces and have something for every taste. They bring out unlimited baskets of some of the best hush puppies I've ever had. The prices are small and the plates are huge.

Damn, someone actually beat me to reviewing this joint! My team and I were in Huntsville for the collegiate Moonbuggy race this past weekend. Exhausted from the race and the cold, wet weather, Greenbrier was the perfect sanctuary to retreat to. This place is not to be confused with "Greenbrier BBQ." Out in the middle of nowhere - really - and all of a sudden you see a parking lot full of trucks and minivans. Yep, it's not just dining out. It's a family culinary event. And it seemed like the entire hungry town had gathered there. As soon as we sat down, we were greeted by the fluffy sweet fried corn bread and really, really long draaaaawl. Drinks are super-sized. Now the good stuff. They are, I was told, famous for BBQ ribs and cat fish. And I was super psyched when I saw the combination plate on the menu! 15 minutes later my dinner arrived, and I dived right in before the waitress had the chance to set the plate down. OMG was the rib good. The meat fell right off the bone. There wasn't excessive sauce on the ribs - didn't need it. It's marinated and smoked to perfection. The cat fish fillet was okay. It's deep-fried (okay, granted it's the South). The tartar sauce helped. All that cost me a little over $14, and I was stuffed stuffed stuffed. If I happen to be in Huntsville again or drive through town on I-65, I'll stop at this place for sure. Small detour, huge satisfaction. And a severe case of food coma.

The Old Greenbriar (not to be confused with the "original" Greenbriar) offers some of the best barbecue and fried catfish you'll find in the south. While everything on the menu is fantastic, Greenbriar is most famous for their hot and fresh hushpuppies that they'll keep bringing to your table as long as you are still breathing. The service is unbelievably quick, even during rush hours, and the food is fantastic! All-around great experience! My favorite dish is the large pork plate and fries. Goes perfectly with the onion-y hushpuppies and just-right sweet tea!

5 stars for the overall experience. The bbq is great. The hushpuppies will make you wish you lived across the street. But you don't, because the place is in the middle of nowhere. Worth the short detour off 565 if you're passing by. Do it.

We love the hush puppies, and they have the best catfish in town!

I live near San Antonio, TX now and one place that I keep telling my friends that I wish I could take them is Greenbrier Restaurant. Their hush puppies are heaven. I could make a meal of just those and the white BBQ sauce. The pulled pork plate is delicious and reminds me of being back in the deep south. So the place isn't fancy or done up in any sort of way. No big deal. It's a little country restaurant with great food. You don't go there for the ambiance; you go for the food!

Who am I to write a review on a staple in Alabama? It was recommended that I eat lunch here and after eating, I felt like it was thanksgiving all over again... I just wanted to take a nap and wake up after Christmas. From the hush puppies to the sweet tea to the catfish, pulled pork and coleslaw, it was awesome! The pork was tender, catfish perfectly fried, coleslaw was sweet and tangy and the sweet potato, well, that was just desert. The hush puppies were a treat as well. This restaurant is not going to be on any healthy eating must eat places but it sure should be on your list of places to eat in Huntsville. The pleasant staff just adds to the experience.
