As another Yelper said "Don't be fooled by the exterior, you'll be missing out if you don't stop!" Short Version: Best meal we had while in the Gulf Shores area. Great food that is perfectly prepared! Stop by and give them a try. Long Version: On our way through Foley while heading home from Gulf Shores,AL we started looking at Yelp for nearby restaurants. The reviews of the Oar House Restaurant looked promising. We found it and were a bit unsure based on the exterior, but then we well know that some of the best meals can be found in unassuming locations! The interior is small with only a few tables. It has a concrete floor. The atmosphere is not great. From the outside to the inside it almost looks like a small beer bar. I would not bring anyone here to impress them with the atmosphere, but the FOOD REALLY SHINES! The menu is pretty limited, but has the usual fare of seafood grilled/fried/blackened and sandwiches. We both ordered the daily special which was Fish and Shrimp with fries and slaw. I substituted the red potatoes for the fries. We received several filet strips of Swai which was the fish of the day. Several other places I ate while in town also offered Swai. Swai is a white-flesh fish (typically available in fillet form) with a sweet mild, taste and light flaky texture. I've since discovered this is basically an imported Asian river-farmed catfish. Had I known that, I would have ordered something different to support our local fishing industry, but that is not really relevant to the review. At any rate, the fish was breaded and fried PERFECTLY. The breading was crisp and not at all greasy. The fish was cooked perfectly and was really tasty. Mine came with red potatoes which I think were also fried and dusted with Parmesan cheese. The reminded me of those delicious potato logs you would eat as a kid. They were well cooked and well seasoned. The one disappointment was the hush puppies. They were small and aside from being a bit sweet, were almost flavorless. Aside from the fact that this was an imported fish, I could not have been happier with my meal. As I said, it was the best meal I had while in the Gulf Shores/Foley area. I will definitely eat here again and just be sure the fish I order is locally sourced. I would strongly urge you to stop in for a bite!

Can we say Oh em gee!? I was very hesitant to try this run down looking hole in the wall, mom and pop store. I'm sure glad I did! This was the best hidden gem ever! I had the gumbo and my better half had the fried shrimp & fish basket, both were yummy!

This is a great mom and pop lunch spot. We happened upon it at lunch time and are so glad we did. Family run business open for lunch only M- F, 11-2. I had the gumbo which was great, everything is homemade including their hot sauce !!

Don't miss this spot for lunch! The Gumbo is excellent, and they have the best Oysters we had in the area. The family is friendly and makes you feel right at home. Don't be fooled by the exterior, you'll be missing out if you don't stop!
