I'm not going to lie - this might be the worst "burger" joint ever. So. Bad.

I travel to Decatur for Business and when your sick of BBQ this little burger joint is pretty good...the patties (i think they are actually meat and flour...doughburgers?) are fried and it comes with mustard and onions... different, fast, cheep and definitely good. was told that Elvis used to frequent the place cash only

A Decatur tradition and it ain't McDonalds! A burger all the way or fresh out of the grease are what you are apt to hear the regulars say. The burgers come with mustard, onions, and a liberal dose of grease. You can add ketchup or red pepper too. The outside of the patty is crunchy and the inside is chewy due to it being a mix of meat and bread. This isn't health food, just a cheap grab and go meal that's been around for 84 years. It asked in the review about waiter service, yes one of the ladies will come around and take your order but most folks just stand at the counter.

First, you should know what you are getting. Penn's sells what are sometimes called "slug burgers", which I believe are a product of the great depression. They certainly are not 100% all-beef patties. There is a lot of bread filler added. Then the patties are partially cooked in deep grease and set aside. When an order is made, the patty is put back in the grease to finish it off. By the way, the grease is never thrown out. The standard burger all the way includes mustard and onions, and cheese if you want. Ketchup and red pepper are available at the table. They are served in a wrapper which also acts as your napkin. Penn's also makes a very good hotdog. The wiener is cooked in one of the old style rotisserie cookers, served on a fresh bun with mustard, onion, and kraut. Very under rated. Fries are frozen, but good and hot, and are cooked in a different batch of oil than the burgers. Several different varieties of chips are available, and drinks are in a Styrofoam cup drawn from a traditional fountain. There are about five booths, plus counter seating. To be honest, my wife does not care for Penn's. I do, as do many others in Decatur. It is probably the oldest restaurant in town and has a dedicated following. If you've never tried it, you should. Before it and others like it are extinct.

I'm only giving this one star. If the operating hours were posted on Yelp, we would know they close at 3:30 on Sat. Looks like a good place, but, we got there at 3:30. And with 3 employees running around, one could have acknowledge us and just said sorry. But, so it goes. They just stared at us.. We will try another famous restaurant here in Decatur....

Penn's is an institution! (since 1927) They are likely not the healthiest burger & certainly not the meatiest burger that you will ever eat, but they are craveable! I order mine with extra mustard & onion.

I so wanted this place to be better. I gave it two stars because it's a classic and the locals love it and so did Elvis, but I was simply not a fan. I got my order to go but my first turn off was the people. I didn't get any kind of a welcome vibe at all, which is downright a let down in a small country classic like this. My second turn off was the food. Ick. I'm a self-proclaimed foodie and I travel the country tasting local fare. So I was more than eager to get my hands on this burger. That burger or whatever the hell that mushed up crap in between the way too mustardy bun, is not good. It's tradition, it's unique but it's not tasty. This and Big Bob's were a total let down. The standard Penn hamburger "all the way" is a deep-fried hand-formed patty served on a bun with mustard and onions. The original 10¢ price increased to 14¢ during World War II and 20¢ in 1962. The burgers are called slug burgers (burgers made of beef and filler) and I was extremely disappointed. I couldn't even make it through. Thank goodness I ordered fries for back up. I think there is more filler than beef, it's tasteless and mushy. Yet another Decatur Foodie Disaster! C. F. Penn Hamburgers is a restaurant founded by Charles Franklin Penn in Hartselle (Morgan County) on April 22, 1927. In 1939 a second location opened in Decatur, where it remains the last of the chain. Birmingham got a location in the 1950s, and Cullman in 1966. Charlie Hodge, a friend of Elvis Presley's, introduced him to the burgers, which were soon a regular staple at Graceland, delivered by the dozens. Time Warner chairman Don Logan also had burgers delivered to his New York office, packed in dry ice for the trip. Just as the reviews stated, the employees and patrons weren't very friendly. I snapped a few pictures but couldn't wait to get my burger and get out!

Waitresses were far from personable. The burger itself tasted like a schnitzel soaked in grease for 3 days. The only positive thing was the price on the meal & after reconsideration I may have been overcharged. Hard to fathom this place has been in business for 88 years. Decatur must have some jacked - up taste buds.

If you want tradition, unique, famous (Elvis had these burgers picked up for himself), greasy but not too greasy. Come to CF Penns! Fries are very good as well. Order your burger, all the way, or all the way with cheese. Maybe soft, brown, crispy, or even cremated!! Super friendly, just tell them to make it like it should be made!!

Best burgers in the Universe! My family is from Decatur, and I've been all over the country and eaten and lots of restaurants. Nothing does it for me like a good Penn's hamburger. Just the right amount of grease, with the wax paper wrapper. Get them with onions and mustard! Every time I come back to Decatur I have to stop and get some Penn's hamburgers, they are the best! Ignore whatever diet you are on and just enjoy the food.
