We've eaten at Southland for a number of years. The food is always really good, but the best thing there is the kindness and friendliness of the servers and managers. They are great people. Our favorite items are the catfish filet sandwich, hamburger steak and vegetable plates. We were there two nights ago and as always the service and food were fantastic. We'll be back in just a few days.

Wasent really feeling this place the moment i walked in.. Alot of old people... Has a funny smell in there. Notice a couple of crackhead servers..in fact our server was crackhead herself..I got a cat fish filet witch i was not happy with... It tasted alot like dirt.. My mother liked her blt.. Our Crackhead server forgot our rolls and added on things to the ticket that i didnt order... I will not be returning to this place

I went with a large group of my patients who recommended and voted that this place was where we should have our social lunch. Something must have gone wrong, because everyone under the age of 30 in this group did NOT like anything we ordered. Ironically, we all ordered off of their daily specials, which apparently is not the thing to get. Every one in the patient group over the age of 30 ordered a sizzling tray and they all were thrilled with their food. I got the charbroiled chicken fits in the palm of my hand. The cole slaw was basically KFC in a cute little bowl. The dried lima beans were not dry and tasted more like potatoes. The cornbread was nice but I've tasted better. The visual highlight of this restaurant goes to their salad bar. At the beginning of the salad bar sits the most gigantic block of cheese I have ever seen in my life. Apparently, you're suppose to cut the cheese off yourself if you want any. It was hilarious to look at. I wonder how long it's been sitting there for. Everything about this restaurant echoes nostalgia. Every customer seems like a regular and seem to know what the good food is.

We kept passing Southland around lunchtime and the parking lot was always packed to capacity, but we never got around to actually trying the place until nearly the end of our time in the Tuscaloosa area. Big mistake--this place is a diamond in the rough as far as restaurants go, and the "rough" is just the fact it's not an airbrushed chain establishment. They have a menu offering the best of Southern comfort foods in portions that will fill you up and leave you with some for lunch the next day--if you're hungry by then. There's also a salad bar for those desiring something a little more healthy, and a tantalizing offering of desserts for everyone else (there's a chocolate pie called something like French Silk, and it is a must-have while you're there). Everything is served up in a casual, country environment with good ol' Southern hospitality by both the servers and managers/owners as they come around to check on everyone to see how they're doing. It's a little detached from the main Tuscaloosa attractions, but it's worth the trip out of the way to eat at this little gem.
