It is in a strip mall which always makes u think twice. But for neighborhood American Mexican food it is solid. The bean dip with the chips is a nice take. Salsa was good as well. Had the Pablano peppers serves open faced with shrimp. Nice flavor. Little spice hit which was perfect. We will be back. Great to find a local decent Mexican food.

My neighborhood Mexican joint. With very few exceptions it has good service, good food and margaritas. Good enchiladas verdes, several good vegetarian options, such as spinach quesadillas, as opposed to chicken and shrimp.

Bistec A La Mexicana! Best thing on the menu, hands down. Margaritas are second best.

Pretty, pretty, pretty dang good. Not only are the chips and salsa free (as they should be), they also treat you to a bean/queso dip as well. These came to the table very fast and the chips were refilled constantly. The Food was good Mexican. I haven't written to my friends in Mexico City or anything, but it was absolutely fine. The Margaritas were more than ok. The ones that were on special were huge and made with real lime juice. Sooo good. I'll be back, Amigos.

I stopped here for a quick lunch. I really enjoyed the ambiance of this place. It's very unassuming - tucked into a shopping plaza, but the food and service didn't disappoint. I had the steak fajita taco salad and it was full of flavor and big chunks of veggies, which I love. I also had a peach margarita, which was delicious as well. The bean dip that you get with the chips and salsa was a pleasant surprise. I would recommend that you wait until 2 if you like margaritas. Overall, I really enjoyed it and will definitely be back.

This was my go to place for many many years when I lived on 32nd. I love the steak yuca tecas. The salsa is delicious. The staff is amazing an got to know me and my favorites. The house margarita is surprisingly good. I miss you mi Amigo! Although I in good hands at another restaurant! Thanks for the many yummy and slightly intoxicated memories!

Los Amigos is a very solid Mexican place. It's a bit unassuming being squeezed in next to the Pig, but impresses once you take your first bite. I've visited a couple times and enjoyed my food both times. It was spiced well, but I wanted to turn the heat up so the server brought me a ridiculously hot sauce that brought the best out of my fajitas. My wife has enjoyed her meals at Los Amigos too, she's tried a quesadilla and fish tacos. Best part about Los Amigos? The price is right. This is some of the most affordable Mexican food you're going to find at a sit-down restaurant. The service is attentive and nice. Give the place a try!

If you're just looking for Mexican food then this is a good place. No great but not bad either. The food is really oily and the servers are not very good. We waited for over 15 minutes to get our check after they took away all of our plates. Overall it's just ok.

Delicious! Very par Mexican food. Rellenos are not fried. Typical decor. Love the bean dip they give you along with the salsa for the table chips.

Pechuga asada is a must have dish. Everything else is pretty much what you would expect. Meat, cheeses, beans, tortillas. The pechuga asada is delicious though. Ask for their house hot sauce to go with it. Can't get enough. Margaritas are an unnatural color but the beer is cheapish.

On Clairmont next to "The Pig" Los Amigos is a great hole in the wall Mexican joint. I eat lunch here about 5 times a month due to the relative proximity to my workplace. Food is flavorful, served hot and FAST! Tamales are hard to make well and theirs are a bit dry, otherwise I would say I have sampled most of the lunch menu from top to bottom. They serve chips and Salsa (both wonderful) the second you sit down, better eat them pronto because your food will arrive within 5 minutes of ordering it (unless your waitress is on crutches then it may take an extra minute or two) The food is consistent, you can always get a seat, you are always greeted with a smile and you can get out the door for lunch for about $8. I go back again and again because my co-workers always seem to get me to go there. I think they are undercover Mexicans, but I still don't know. Stay tuned as the investigation continues!!!

Perfectly acceptable American style mexican food. Lunch specials are a good value. Not far from the Civil Rights museum. Parking in the strip mall lot can be tight.

Not great Mexican food, but it's solid, fairly priced, and the service is usually good.

My favorite Mexican place in B-ham but they are severely lacking in portions. They spread the sides out to look like there's more than there is. Great food! But too little of it.

Love this little unassuming place. Great food, great prices, nice staff, never have to wait (except on 5/5), best chips/salsa/cheese dip in town. OK, it's probably not authentic cuisine, but who cares! it's yummy and I like it. And they will get you in and out quickly if you need to. Also, their soda mixture is perfect - best fountain Cokes I've had.

I always order the Bistek Ranchero which comes with a tender ribeye, refritos, arroz. Marian's Chimichangas are tender chicken always tender and not greasy. They serve Jarritos Mexican soft drinks. The complimentary multicolored chips come with Pico de Gallo and a tasty black bean and queso dip. Always good.

I have been going to this place since the day they opened and have been going regularly since! That should say something. It has had to have been 15 years

I really enjoy Los Amigos. The average prices for a food item is about 7$. The food comes VERY fast and is always good. It's definitely Tex-Mex for sure, everything is cheesey and good. The service is great! It's in a good area and it's definitely family friendly. My only complaint is the margaritas at happy hour are sometimes either too sour or not enough alcohol.

This is your average "American-Mexican" food type place. You're not going to get authentic, fresh tacos or anything like that, but that's not what you expect. You come here for quick, cheap, decent Mexican food with free chips and salsa and that's what you get.

I had a chat with the manager/owner of Los Amigos last week about how far the restaurant has come. I had one of those "my god I'm getting old" moments when he told me it's turning eleven years old soon - which means I first visited at the ripe young age of thirteen. Admittedly, I have a soft spot for this place but I'm going to try to remain as objective as possible. Over the years a lot has changed in Los Amigos: most obviously the decor but also the quality of the food and mixed drinks. Make no mistake this place isn't trendy and it isn't necessarily high-quality but it's a really safe, solid bet for good food. All of these improvements were made relatively recently so if you haven't been back in the last three or four years go ahead and give it another chance. The service has always been exceptional, attentive, and honest about what is and isn't good on the menu. The actual food is much more flavorful now than it was initially and the margaritas have come a looongg way from their humble, "potty water" origins. What's best: despite all these positive changes Los Amigos is still affordable. A lunch tab for two usually runs me $20.00 after tip. My favorite dish is #55 Bistek a la Mexicana w/ corn tortillas. Cheese dip is also a winner. Also, if you're feeling especially adventurous, ask for "chiles toreadors" but be warned you won't crap right for a week.

Tucked into a shopping center next to the Piggly Wiggly you can find this delightful little gem. Los Amigos is a great little location for lunch or for happy hour. Their salsa is to-die for and one could easily come in and stuff their face for hrs with chips and that salsa. They have some solid margarita specials, and the food is above average. All in all a great little Mexican joint.

I used to love this place, great happy hour and the food is not bad. I was turned off to this place after repeated overcharging.

As another reviewer said, this is American-ized Mexican food. My wife and I call it "swamp muck" because everything swims in cheap yellow rice and refried beans. Unfortunately, this is what many Americans think of as "Mexican" food. That said, we enjoy this variety every once in a while when it is good, i,e., well-prepared with quality ingredients. Regrettably, this was not good. To be fair, we had take-out and have tried it only once so I'll update this review after a 2nd visit, which will only be when we're in a rush or don't feel like cooking. That people rate this five stars (apparently meaning the best food they've ever had) is sad on so many levels. Despite being Alabama, we have lots of truly good restaurants in Birmingham. You go to Los Amigos in a strip mall next to a Piggly Wiggly and give it five stars? It's as good as any food you've ever had? You've never been to Hot and Hot, or Ollie Irene, or Melt, or Chez Fon Fon, or Brick and Tin, or Bettola, or Post Office Pies which are all just minutes away? Want GREAT Mexican food? Travel five minutes to El Barrio, which is outstanding. Great cocktails there, too. Want authentic (whatever that means)? Try Mi Puebla (which is as good, cheap and "authentic" as it gets) or the little taqueria located at the center of the Alabama Farmer's Market on Finlay.

I saw the review by Judy about the employees using their hands to scoop up the chips. I cannot guarantee that they never do, just have never seen it in 5+ years of going to the "Pig Mexican." Their food is fine in the Americanized Mexican super cheesey way. Nothing great, but solid, although the steak yucatecas quesadilla can be a thing of cheese magic on occassion. House made sala picante is deliciously spicy and a great addition to their regular house salsa.

The chips & queso dip was amazing! I had the chicken and steak fajita for the main course. It was alright I guess.

I love this place, have been going for several years. The food is fresh, staff is friendly and helpful. Happy hour starts at 2:00. I often eat lunch late so I usually enjoy a margarita before or with my meal. Prices are very reasonable.

Went with several friends for a birthday,no one was happy with the food. It was just ok. Many Mexican restaurants around B'ham that are much better. Our server was pathetic also, had to constantly remind him to bring more chips & salsa. Asked to bring additional basket of chips & a extra bowl of salsa being that they were 5 of us, nope wouldn't do it. So all of us ate out of a small basket of chips & small bowl of salsa. Will not be back!

DELICIOUS MEXICAN! My husband & I ate here for the first time this week and it was delicious. The salsa was fresh & they also offered a black bean dip that I had never had before but we didn't leave a drop of it. I had steak quesadillas & my husband had chicken quesadillas. We both had them "fajita style" and cleaned our plates. The servings aren't as large as other Mexican restaurants I've been to, but I also felt that I got what I paid for & didn't leave feeling stuffed (which I hate). Can't wait to go back.

A local mexican joint that has a lot of potential but needs to tighten up a few things Tip: Margaritas are $3 from 2-7pm and are good. Ambience/Service: First, let me say the service is superb. Attentive and very fast at all levels of service. Everyone's pleasant and moving at a 'move with a purpose' pace (coming from the Northeast, I appreciate that). Spacious and clean area. Saw a birthday at a big table in the middle of the room and the staff came by and brought a shot of tequila (I believe) which was a nice touch. Food (I'm vegetarian): First, I was quickly presented with chips and salsa the second I sat down. The salsa is great, more blended than chunky but had good flavor. Not particularly hot. The chips were not warm, which I prefer, and were a bit chalky tasting to me. I'm not sure if they were slightly stale or just a bad batch. They weren't bad though. A solid chips and salsa. I loved to see a whole vegetarian section on the menu, which is mostly combination plates (like 1 enchilada + 1 taco, etc). Otherwise there's veggie fajitas and stuffed poblano peppers. I opted for the veggie fajitas which came out sizzling - a detail that is often missed by other restaurants. I assume it's because there's no fat in vegetables so they don't sizzle as much. This is important to me because I love immediately dousing my veggies in some hot sauce and it caramelizes a bit on the hot plate. The vegetables were fresh and varied - mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, and some shredded cheese. It came with a plate of refried beans with cheese on top, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole. The tortillas came in a neatly wrapped foil but after opening it, it was clear it was sitting on a steam tray for way too long. The edges were rock hard and difficult to separate. I ate 1 but ripped the others. The server quickly got me another set but it suffered from the same issue. The server also came by and gave me a on-the-house bean dip for the chips which was very very good. If I didn't take the over-steamed tortillas, I'd say the fajitas are a solid 3.5 stars. Overall: The bad tortillas x2 really was unfortunate because this was one of the better veggie fajitas I had otherwise. It ruined the entire eating experience. I really want to rate this place highly as it appears to be run by hard-working people that serve good food. I'll be looking to come again and up the rating if the poblanos prove to be better.

Went here again Sunday for national margarita day! Had a delicious $2.99 margarita as usual. Still love the warm chips, fresh salsa, and yummy warm bean dip. Tried a new entree - shrimp chili rellenos - so many grilled shrimp! Loved the flavor of the roasted poblano pepper and the queso fresca on top. Yummy.

My favorite Mexican resaurant in town. Great salsa and queso dip and they give a black bean dip with your salsa now. Good happy hour $2.99 margaritas and staff is super friendly!

Came in on a Sunday night. Very crowded, and I think it affected service. I do like that they give you bean dip alongside your salsa, but the salsa was surprisingly bland. Like, no cilantro, no onion, could have come out of a wholesale can of salsa for all I knew. They don't give you very many chips up front, which was fine for two people, but I'm sure for a bigger party it could have been an issue. Boyfriend got nachos and three chicken tacos (a little too much food for him), and I got the los amigos fajitas. There was a decent wait between our orders coming out consecutively, and even when mine was brought the waiter took an extra five minutes to bring the tortillas for mine. It's been awhile since I've ordered fajitas, but whenever I eat out at other places, people seem to get fajitas brought out with the rest of the party's meal just fine, so again, I think the service was just a little lacking that night. I mean, we weren't in a huge hurry, but we weren't willing to spend all night there. The food was good, but certainly nothing outside of your standard Mexican fare. The menu was disappointingly lacking in a multitude of chorizo dishes, which is something I always look for at Mexican places that are new to me. Granted, this isn't unusual for Mexican places in and around Birmingham. So, overall underwhelming, but I'm sure we'll be back because since Rojo is dead to me, it's the closest Mexican place without us going over the hill to Irondale or over to Greensprings.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
