Sandbar simply has the best fish and chips you'll ever have. Anywhere. Period. End of story. Yes, it's a dive. Yes, it's in the valley and is out of the way. But it is absolutely worth it. They make their tartar sauce, ranch and thousand island dressings from scratch, and their batter is homemade and done fresh as well, which only adds to the decadence. The other dishes they prepare are quite tasty, too, and I especially like the options for side items OTHER than fries (I prefer the mozzarella sticks w/ ranch). If you're in Juneau and have a chance to make it out here, don't think just go. You will be happy you did.

As a local I recognize that this is a dive bar but they have the best halibut in town hands down. For years this has been the go to place for the halibut! Who cares about what the place looks like, go here to get your grub on. Me and friends make it a point to go as a group. We have a great meal, tasty beer and thoroughly enjoy our time visting. There are pool tables, shuffle board and a few other games making this a gem among dive bars.

The Sandbar is THE BEST fish and chips I have ever had! They also have great appetizers and burgers as well. It is always my number one stop to eat when I'm back in Juneau. I highly recommend it as a must when visiting! You won't be disappointed in the food.

If you're looking for fish and chips in Juneau, this is the place to go. Anywhere in town, the price for fish and chips will make you cringe ($15-20), but Sandbar is the only place I'm happy to spend it, because it is delicious. It isn't in the most convenient of locations, and is a little bit seedy...but that adds to the charm, right?

A local recommended we grab the halibut and chips here. There's no sign out front identifying the place, but once you turn onto Industrial, it's the only place that's not a warehouse, so it's pretty easy to find. Big red building, lots of neon beer signs in the windows. Local dive-bar with lots of interesting flair. We were obviously from out of town and got some looks from the locals, but the waitress was friendly enough. The halibut was super fresh, which was nice. But the batter was super bland. More just a vessel for holding the fish and deep frying. (Although, that seems to be a universal truth in Juneau. We're a large group, and at least one of us ordered fish and chips a few more times at different places. Apparently the norm in Juneau is fresh fish and boring batter. I mean, if you have gorgeous ingredients, I agree one shouldn't drown it in over-powering sauces. But SOME seasoning is required (would a pinch of salt and pepper be out of line?!?) Oh well, nothing a little malt vinegar and tarter sauce can't help with). There's a variety of chips options. I just ordered the regular, and they were uninspired. My sister was thrilled to substitute deep fried mozzarella sticks with her order. There's a wall of right-wing conservative signs and bumperstickers as you pass through the hallway. Plenty of parking out front. Several beers on tap. We asked what was the darkest they had, and were told Alaskan Amber. So, no stouts or porters. But still, Alaskan Amber is a tasty beer, so not a huge deal.

I was fortunate enough to have some locals take me to the Sandbar to have some of the best fish 'n chips I've ever had. The batter has the perfect crispiness, and the fish is fresh and tender. I highly recommend this place if you are checking out the glacier (Nugget Falls).

Where do I begin? Shall I begin with describing the $18 large order of fish and chips that fed two hungry adults who had just conquered the West Glacier trail? Or shall I start off with describing the bearded fisherman who came up, complimented my girlfriend on her shorts "these remind me of a float plane landing strip!" then regaled us with stories of a bush pilot who used to fly drunk and scare the hell out of his passengers "yeah I think we're over gustavus...let's take a look" (steep dive into the cloud deck)? I don't know where to begin so just go there, grab your favorite type of Alaskan beer, and order some fish and chips. Experiences will soon follow.

This is a decent local bar whose bartenders are limited in the drinks that they can make WELL. The bartenders are nice, friendly and cater to there local clientele. The bar food is average (i.e. wings, burgers, fries). But because of its location in Alaska you will find halibut tacos on the menu as well. The bar has a separate kitchen area, and the establishment houses pool tables, shuffle board and fooseball table. There is a jukebox that the bartenders can also control with a remote. The patrons (locals) are friendly and love chatting with visitors.

Best halibut and chips, so good. Nice selection of beers, friendly staff. You won't see any tourists here which is nice.

Absolutely 100% alaskan dive bar. That being said very nice folks inside a bit rough looking but very cool and welcoming. A much appreciated change from the Disney like experience downtown. Bar has two pool tables free on Sunday. Full size shuffleboard and foseball. The fish and chips were great big thick filet cuts of halibut. Think the size of a pack of cards, but thicker. In leu of chips we upgraded to fried zucchini and mushrooms, both were awesome. If you're tired of the cruise ship atmosphere of your shore excursions this is not a fabricated alaskan restaurant/bar. Prices were not cheap 14.00 for the fish but hey your not in the lower 48 anymore.

After a day of glaciers, geo-caching (don't ask) and a brewery visit we were ready for some tasty Alaskan grub. After asking one of the locals where to go, she promptly pointed us toward Sandbar. She did warn us that it may be a little dodgy for for us and to go eat in the tourist trap part of town if we didn't like the looks of the place. That made me want to eat there even more. We did happen to have 4 kids with us so I was a little concerned about them letting our party of 10 in, From the outside the place didn't look exactly "kid friendly" definitely my kind of place though) but the gal at the bar said it would be ok. Great. Most of us had the halibut fish and chips which were pretty good. I would have preferred bigger pieces of fish and a crispier batter but it was still good. I matched my meal with a tasty IPA that was on tap. For the life of me I can't remember the brewery in came from (not Alaskan Brewing). I would go to this place again before I set foot into one of the tourist trap restaurants near the cruise ships. A solid 3 1/2 stars.

I was in Juneau for work and I was invited out on the water for some whale watching. Afterwards, my Juneau friends took me to the Sandbar for some fish & chips. It was out of this world. Fresh, juicy, thin tasty crispy batter. I was hooked. I then traveled to Sitka, Ketchikan and Anchorage looking for the same delicious fish - with absolutely no luck. (Not to mention the additional 10 lbs I gained looking for it). The Sandbar has hands-down the best Fish & Chips EVER! Like Lara M said: NO OTHER PLACE EVEN COMPARES!!! The ambience can be a little rough, but you won't mind once you bite into the first piece of fish. If you are ever in Juneau - DO NOT MISS A CHANCE to have their fish & chips!!!

Since my significant other and I live nearby, the Sandbar has been a favorite over the years. We always get the fish and chips, his with fries, mine with onion rings, and share those. The fish is halibut which is locally caught and very fresh. They also have a "big boy" fish and chips with 8 pieces instead of the usual 5, but we always have a few pieces left over from the regular. The halibut chunks are encased in fluffy beer batter. We usually get a side of cole-slaw (I don't love 'slaw in general, but this stuff is homemade and it's great!) and fresh-brewed ice tea. The other reviewer must've been there on an off-day, because every time we go there are two or three very hard-working ladies behind the counter; sometimes just one if it's still morning. They fry everything upon order, so depending on the number of people ahead of you, it may take about 15-20 minutes, but the result is worth the wait. And they always bring the food out steamy hot and with a fresh slice of lemon. It IS sort of a dive, but it has the BEST fish n chips in town.

Great halibut. The beef quesadilla is the best bang for your buck.
