My sister went on a cruise to Alaska and I saw pictures of them on the Mount Roberts tram. My curiosity was piqued and finally I had chance to try a ride on the tram in Juneau. I thought it was a fun ride. I was nervous, but it was not bad at all. It reminds me of riding a train uphill in Hong Kong. I enjoyed the tram and recommend it if you visit or live in Juneau.

I wish I could get back the $29 I paid for to simply ride this damn tram. It's nothing special. I've ridden a tram for the same price, if not less, in Switzerland and felt it was worth my money. This one just takes you up to Mt. Roberts overlooking Juneau. There were hiking trails on the top but the bf and I were pressed for time and opted against it. The only other thing up there aside from that is another gift shop and an eatery. We literally spent 20 minutes up there only to hit up the restroom and look at the gift shop. That tram ride should cost $10 at most because $29 is highway robbery.

My husband and I specifically chose to ride this tramway for the hiking around Mt. Roberts. There were signs at the bottom of the tramway where tickets were being purchased, stating that the hiking trails at the top were open (the prior week had 75 degree weather), but that there was snow and mud present on the trails. My husband and I are experienced backpackers and have hiked on trails with snow before so we were undaunted by this statement. We paid the $62 ($31 per person) to ride the tramway to the top to get to the good hiking with the good views. After hiking a total of 300 yards on the trails at the top, we came to a sign that stated, "trail closed, hike at your own risk, avalanche warning". The trail was covered with snow to the point that you couldn't tell where the trail was going. There was no way we could actually do what we came to do which was hike. (according to a local, apparently the two nights prior, a bunch of weather had come through and added snow to the trails... would have been nice to know this prior to purchasing tickets...) We felt cheated out of our money. The sign stating the trails were open was very deceptive so I tried talking to the manager at the bottom of the tramway about getting a partial refund for our tickets. The minute the manager came out of her office I knew there was no way I would get any money back - she approached me with a glare and looked extremely abrasive. That initial impression proved to be true. I tried explaining my case but she insisted that the trails "are open and we even have signs down here stating they are". I informed her of the closed trail signs at the top but she seemed to either not believe me or not care. Most likely the latter. I would only recommend the tramway if you want to hike Mt. Roberts and need a quick way of getting to the top - and you know FOR SURE that the trails at the top are open. Otherwise just hike the trail from the bottom to the top and skip the tramway altogether - then you won't get cheated out of money if the trails at the top just so happen to be closed. Ps: even if you don't want to hike, the tramway is unimpressive. I've been on gondolas on ski hills more awe-inspiring for better value. Spend your money visiting the Mendenhall glacier if you actually want to be impressed.

Mount Roberts Tramway offers a spectacular view of not only the Gastineau Channel, but of Juneau as well... as long as you don't go up on a cloudy day. Tickets in general are $33/ adult for all day ticket. If you you are on a cruise ship, the price will be the same if purchased through your ship as it is at the ticket office at the tram. If you are up to it, you can take a hike up the mountain and pay $10 to ride down or spend $10 up at the restaurant to get a lift for free. The ride itself up to the top is relatively quick, ~5 minutes with two cars running on the line. A word of caution, they will pack the cars to capacity if there are a lot of people, so space can get tight. The ride itself is relatively smooth, with a bit of a bump at the end when you reach the top. Upon entry, you pretty much walk right by the gift shop filled with gifts you could find in port. If you are looking for a handmade gift and not one that is a "gift from Alaska, but made in China", there is a nice selection in a smaller kind of walled off area in the main gift shop. Downstairs, there is the Chilkat Theater that might have live performances or you can see a brief film on the Tlingit history and culture. There also happens to be a restaurant as well, but I can't speak to it. If you venture outside, you can go and visit Liberty Bell in a small enclosure. She happens to be a bald eagle who can't be re-released due to injuries she had sustained. There is also a nature center that provides general information about the plants and wildlife in the area, as well as maps if you wish to walk around. The tram is a good option for someone who isn't able to go out explore Juneau and the surrounding area or someone who wants to take it nice and easy while in port.

$33 for round trip up Mt Roberts Located on the cruise ship piers before getting into town. It's a quick 7 minute ride, and very steep. The pass is good for the entire day if you want to go up and down more than once. Great views, a restaurant and access to several hiking trails at the top

We used our ship credit to get us these tram tickets do we didn't mind the price. It wouldn't be worth it if you weren't going to spend time up there walking around or having lunch. It's beautiful up there-great views and a lot of bald eagles flying around. Pretty cool stuff! Did I mention the free WIFI?!! Make sure you have mosquito repellent on! If it's raining it's not a big deal but as soon as it stops they start buzzing around.

We enjoyed our visit and ride on the tram, but if I were to go back is probably do it a little differently. The tram ticket round trip from the bottom is $33 per adult, or you can hike up for free and catch a ride down. It looked like a pretty steep Hike, but others said they did it in about 40 mins. From the top, you can ride down for free if you spend $10 in the gift shop or restaurant. If I were to go back, I'd hike up and work up an appetite, then do the $44 all you can eat crab at the restaurant and then ride down for free :-)

My wife and I took the Mount Roberts Tramway to the top of Juneau Alaska two weeks ago, and had a wonderful experience. First of all the Tramway ride up the mountain is really breath taking, and once you get to the top, you can look over the entire city of Juneau. A Tram employee tells you some history of the Tram and Juneau on your way up the mountain. There is a small museum and store to visit and you can see a Bald Eagle up close. You can also hike the trails through the forest and also have a wonderful Lunch or Dinner at the Timberline Bar & Grill as you look out of the windows enjoying the great views of Juneau. A great experience for everyone to try on your next visit to Juneau, Alaska.

The tramway ride was great way to view the city. There were several tourists from multiple cruise lines waiting to get on. They packed us in like sardines and made it difficult to get a good look around. The tram ride operator left much to be desired also. He was very vocal about how he"did not like tourists and enjoyed his city streets quiet and empty"! My husband and I were stunned at this young mans attitude and numerous negative comments...... After all his job was dependent on tourism. Once was enough for mus.

The Mount Roberts Tramway costs $32.00 for a ride up the hill and back down. The ride going up is approximately four minutes, and coming down is about three minutes. For the amount paid I personally think is outrageous. However, the views in the tram is spectacular. You will see the whole Juneau Bay that was carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago, and its cruise liners docked around the area. When on top, there are additional gift stores, a restaurant, a nature center, and there are also hiking trails. Overall, I love the views and just being around nature. The forest is considered young since its barely a little over half a century old. I think they should charge so much just for a ride since most people will be spending more money on top. A fair price to go up I think should be $16.00 or less. It seems to be a tourist trap where the actual tourist especially the elders are paying too much for a short ride to the top. Please have a bigger heart Mr. Tramway and re-evaluate the cost. Some people may not be able to afford it.

So when I got to Juneau I wasn't expecting to go on the tram because it was so high. When I got inside we paid for the tickets which was a little high but that's okay because when is the next time I'm going to be in Juneau ? There wasn't that many customers around which kind of worried me but I was alright because I didn't want anyone to know I was afraid of heights. So I got on the tram and one of the employees was giving the history on the tram in Juneau and how Mt. Roberts was a gold mine. She also spoke about how there were two different tribes which I think were the Ravens and the Whales I believe. It was really nice to get some history about the area while riding on the tram. So once I got to the top of the trim there was a restaurant a few little shops and this bald eagle name Miss Baltimore. So I went into the shop which is next to miss Baltimore and the lady took me on the hiking trail. I was very nervous because I did not have a knife or anything to protect me if a bear or any other animal was around. She said that there wasn't any reports of bears around but that doesn't mean that there wasn't any around. So we went on the trail and I took a few pictures and I really did enjoy being on the trail but I was ready to go back down. If I come back to Juneau I will definitely come back to Mount Roberts I really had a lot of fun even though I was nervous.

You gotta do it if you're in Juneau but you'll be underwhelmed. The ride up can get cramped and the restaurant at the top is hardly worth the ride up. If you have time and stamina for a hike, hike up, enjoy a simple lunch at the restaurant, save your receipt, and take the tram down free of charge.

  • Sheryl S.

Worth the money if you have the time to spend up there In July, we took the tram up - my son wanted to hike up but it was raining - and we really enjoyed the ride and the view. There is an injured bald eagle at the top to see as well as a nature center. While we were looking around at those, the wearer cleared up so we hiked to Father Brown's cross. IT was a fun hike - wished that we had had more time to keep exploring. The tram ticket is good for all day and you can ride it as much as you want - wish that we had taken a morning ride and then come back later as well. Because we were on a cruise ship, we did not have time to eat up there - wanted to hike instead. We also saw bald eagles in the tree tops on our way down which was cool. Grab a rain jacket and go!

  • Ricky L.

Overpriced, and took 1 hour for burger to arrive. Wait to go back down to downtown Juneau to get food, don't waste your money for mediocre food up in the mountains.

  • Tiffany C.

Actually hiked up the mountain to avoid tram cost but took the tram down. Took about an hour walk to get to the beginning of the trail and then about another hour to get to the top of the mountain. Steep trail but pretty. Needed to spend $10 each to get a ride back down on the tram so we bought a $23 sweater. The awesome cashier gave us a discount. Then you just show your receipt to the Tram operator to get down. Our tram operator was a jerk and he stuffed as many people into our Tram as possible. People standing in the middle can't see anything and those by the windows are squished right up to the window.

  • Vikéndios N.

I really didn't want to spend $31 per person to ride up just to take pics, but my partner insisted and paid. Okay fine, I'll go. The ride is about 3-5 minutes long each way. The tram operator gave us a monotone spiel about the lift and area, it was pretty funny. Once up there, the views are awesome. It was a clear day so our pics came out great. The gift shop had an end-of-season sale with everything 50% off. We checked out the bald eagle that's in captivity due to its injury. I've never seen one up close so that was cool. There are several short hiking trails as well. Our friends stayed for a live performance in the theater by some native tribes which they didn't care for. OVERALL: The pricey tickets are good for the entire day, but I'm not sure why you'd go up and down more than once. The view was awesome but that's about it.

I enjoyed my time on Mt Roberts. The tram is overpriced at 32.00 as a excursion from princess. But what I enjoyed was walking around the mountain. There were lots of great views , trails, snow, creeks and trees. It was so nice to get away from the crowds on the ship. The trails had enough people so it did not get scary. Being new to Alaska I was worried about wildlife. I wish I would of planned ahead so I could have spent more time there. As a tourist they are always after your money. There is a lame picture taking place. A big restaurant, souvenir shops and a naturalist shop. The trails are the best . There is no need to buy a ticket from the cruise company. The tram is located (surprise ! surprise ! right at the cruise docks !

    (4)
  • Chris C.

Pretty much the only thing to relly do in Anchorage. However, not worth the money as the only thing really at the top is the view and Lady Baltimore and a bar with good Alaskan Beer!

    (3)
  • Bonnie C.

I could have passed on this one. The views are nice at the top but they stuff you in the tram like sardines and it's uncomfortable. The price is $32 a person and I personally think that's too much. So glad I used my Northern Lights coupon and it was buy one get one free. I heard from a few people that the trails up are really nice and we met quite a few hikers at the top. They have an Eagle that was shot and no longer can fly- Lady Baltimore in a cage. I felt sorry for her. There is a gift shop and nature center at the top. There wasn't much to do but the view was nice. It's a nice place to get some photographs or go on a hike.

Not really worth the money. Our party of 8 had planned on riding the tram to the top and enjoying some snacks and drinks while we admire the view. We were very disappointed when we got to the top and found only a gift shop and cafeteria style restaurant. We decided to go back down because we could enjoy better/free food and ambiance on our cruise ship. We did enjoy viewing the bald eagle and a shout out to the Nature Center staff (Theresa) who mailed my mom her camera that she forgot while she was making a purchase.

My husband and I went up and down the Mount Roberts Tramway when we were on a cruise this past summer. The price was a bit high for a ride that lasted only a few minutes each way ($64 total including tax for two people), but we were on vacation so splurged. The operator was cheerful. I was fortunate enough to get a window view, so I could see the mountain on the side and the ocean below. The views from 1800 feet in the air were pretty. Once on top of the mountain, we visited a raptor center that takes care of injured birds including eagles as well as a gift shop with Indian and other gifts. I saw a restaurant but did not eat there because we were not hungry. I was grateful for the clean bathroom. We heard a bit of live music that was performed by a Russian band. We also went for a short hike.

As soon as you disembark the ship, you'll pretty much see this attraction. You can't miss it - it's right along the dockside. Don't buy tickets in advance though, because if the day is cloudy or misty, you don't get your money back. The trams run continuously, so they don't run out of tickets. The trip up and down the mountain takes around only 5 minutes each way and once you're at the top there's a 20 minute video about Alaska, a small enclosure with a recovering eagle staying and depending on the time of year, a hiking path which leads, I'm told, to a viewing platform. We didn't think this attraction was worth the money at all, it was seriously steep for what we got, especially since the hiking path at the top, was closed. Our view was mostly obscured by the tram mechanism itself and the lady sitting at the eagle enclosure was chain smoking and unfriendly.

  • Janet H.

This was a very short (2-3) minute tram ride to the top of the mountain. The views are good but the town is small and you can see just as good views from the top deck of your cruise ship. The cost was high for what you get. This would be good if you plan to hike at the top otherwise, skip it.

    (2)
  • Jennifer K.

Mount Roberts Tramway cost $29 is quite expensive for the experience. The view of the harbour with all these cruise ships and the mountain is breathtaking.. but the line so long and you really wondering if it is worth your while. Timberline Bar and Grill a little pricey and if all you need is a quick bite or have a local beer.. there are a lot of other choices in town. Good to take the Tramway once... not worth a repeat visit. Or you can do what I did, take the Tramway up and take the hike down... it was a more pleasant and close to nature experience!

  • Raquel V.

If giving zero stars was possible that would be the rating. I was treated poorly at the ticket counter as I asked questions about their rates. To say the gal behind the counter had an attitude would be an understatement. The lady on the tram was also extremely dissatisfied with her position. She was rude and told everyone in the tram it's safer than an airplane...well I work on them and I highly disagree. At least you stand a chance of survival in an aircraft! Don't waste your money eating at the restaurant either, the food is 10x better in town! I won't pay $30 to look at trees and be treated poorly. The only upside was they young gal taking the tram down who informed us of historical facts and information on the greenery. Other than that, I don't plan to come again.

    (1)
  • Adrianna C.

$30 is a little steep for a tram ride that's over in less than 5 minutes. However, the views were stunning and the hiking trails were fun. I felt awful for the bald eagle they had in that tiny cage up top. She looked so sad and uncomfortable.

    (3)
  • Oliver P.

The ride was nice and the view was pretty, but way too expensive. My son liked seeing the bald eagle up close, so that was a plus. We had beers on the back deck, and the service was poor (though the Alaska beers on draught were great)

    (2)
  • Jess B.

It's not that this was a bad experience, I just think it was over-priced for what we got. We paid $35 per person, which gets you unlimited rides up and down for a day, but really who is going to go up more than once? We waited about 10 minutes to catch a tram car up, and then it's about a 3-minute ride to the top of the mountain. I wish that the ride had actually been slower so we could've had time to enjoy the view, but it was fast and just packed, so I couldn't really see out the window. It was rainy outside, as it is a lot in Juneau, but we were able to see well from the top. We were pleasantly surprised to see that they have an eagle at the top, too. That's really what made me give 3 stars instead of 2. The eagle has been injured, and they take care of it since it can't be released back into the wild. It was the closest I had ever been to an eagle. Getting back down, we had to wait about 20 minutes-- the line was really long and we had to make it back to our cruise ship. It was cool to get the view, but certainly not something I would put on my must-do list for Juneau.

Great diversion in Juneau if you're over the souvenir shops. My family and I walked up Mount Roberts and took the tramway down. A much better use of time and money if you have the time and inclination to do a bit of hiking. The tram is $10 per person one-way down or you simply need to purchase the equivalent amount at the tram station stores and present your receipt. The trails were very well maintained and the tram station at the top has all manner of Alaskan souvenirs (including adult footsie pajamas, ulu knives, and postcards) as well as a restaurant, coffee bar, and clean bathrooms. The tram itself offers a very short ride down.

  • Jennifer E.

A nice ride up with some history of the region and the tram. Film is worth the time to watch. We had a few drinks at the restaurant and honestly the prices were not that bad considering the location. People need to remember there are no roads into Juneau. Then you consider how they get to the top of the tram. Beer was $7, wine was $8 a glass. Gift shop had an upscale section and then the normal tourist flare. The restaurant didn't have many tables with views. Only three. We were lucky and got one of those. Line to go back down took less than 30 minutes. Admission price is high but most tourist things are higher than normal. A nice couple of hours to be on top of Juneau with little effort which was nice since we had my 80 year old dad with us.

  • Robert G.

The tram is one of the few things to do in town. Unfortunately, the restaurant at the top is not very good. They view is spectacular and the people are friendly.

  • Subrosa I.

PROS: + Cool view of the town and harbor during the ride + Takes you to the top of Mt. Roberts (spectacular hiking trails) + Friendly and informative guides CONS: - Getting crammed up like a can of sardines - Somewhat pricey (paying $29 for a 5-minute ride)

    (4)
  • Biz M.

Kinda pricy, but we decided to do it because we figured we wouldn't be coming back to Juneau any time soon. Incredible views of the city and harbor. At the top are some great hiking trails, a nature center and a bald eagle exhibit. The tram operator was very friendly and informative.

we took the tram up mt robert, the tram ride was uneventful but once we were there it was beautiful. we hiked and took tons of pictures, it actually was more fun and scenic than we expected.

  • Ham R.

Save your money. Unless you have never seen a small mountain and pine trees before, save the $31 tram fare this overpriced attraction charges. Yes, the ride to 2,000 feet elevation is nice and the people very friendly, but there isn't a lot of stuff at the top other than a small hiking trail, a gift shop and some refreshments. Take the money you save and hire a local guide for a few hours and get a better Juneau experience.

    (3)
  • Elizabeth S.

If you are stopping off in Juneau this is one of those really nice things to do if you can spare at least an hour to do it. The tram starts right in front of the cruise ships and takes you up to the top in about 20 minutes. There's a gift shop, an ok restaurant and they sell beer. If your feeling abitious there are some nice hiking trails. The view are really awesome so make sure you camera doen't die like mine did, (I'm sure I will get some pics from my friends). Go in the afternoon if you can. Everyone who doen't have a tour booked heads straight for this as they get off the ship and then heads off the the tourist trap shops. Shop/eat first and then do this in the afternoon when the lines are shorter. You need to allow at least an hour to do this; (you don't want to watch your ship sail from the killer view vantage point on top of the mountain).

    (4)
  • Kayleigh A.

Terrifying. Though I am sure you are safe- this just seemed really steep- but once you get to the top you will be glad you did it! They keep the area clean and you have to explore a little if you are going to be in Alaska.

    (4)
  • Wyndie M.

Warning: it's $29 for a tram ride. So that being said, the view is great, if the weather is clear. There's a typical tourist shop and eatery at the top. The nature center is nothing special, but there are hiking trails at the top. Unfortunatly they were all snowed over when I visited on May 30th.

    (2)
  • Jack H.

Tram ride smooth, staff friendly and professional. $31 adult and $15.5 child as indicated on their website, unlimited rides for the day of purchase. Aside from the tram, the only other thing that I liked was the live bald eagle, apparently injured in one eye permanently and now in captivity. The eagle is magnificent to see up close!!! Yes if you are a first time cruiser to Juneau, yah you do this. Would I do this again on a return trip?.....no.

    (3)
  • Bob L.

Awesome halibut fish and chips and seafood clam chowder at the Timberline bar and grill. The wait staff are very personable. Recommended. Stop by and see Baltimore, the non releasable bald eagle.

    (4)
  • Jennifer M.

While the view is great once you get up there, paying $27 to be crammed into the car like sardines was not fun, in my opinion. You are not allowed to sit down, and they keep stuffing people in until they can't stuff any more! We went in the afternoon and there was no line, but they still suffed us in. So only the people pressed up against the glass had a view. Pretty disappointing. They tell you your $27 ticket is good for as many rides as you want all day, but who wants to go thru that more than once!

  • Chris F.

We took the ride up to the top of Mt. Robert's on a beautiful Summer day in Juneau. The temperature the day our cruise ship pulled in reached 80 degrees. The views from the top were amazing. You can see several peaks and areas on a clear day. There is a visitor's center and an injured bald eagle that you can visit in addition to the enjoying the views. We had been to Juneau before and you could not see the top of the lift from the station. I would not recommend going up if the weather is not clear. It will cost you $30 a piece, and it is good all day. It was very enjoyable

    (4)
  • DQ F.

We did it just because it is right at the bus stop, we only have less than one day, it is nice, it seems run by locals, I rather give them money than all those tourist shop in town. The view on the top was breathtaking. It is not fancy, but it is worth the trip.

    (3)
  • Robert L.

To get tickets you have to add additional excursions and it ends up costing a ton of money. Don't even try to buy tickets anywhere else as it is monopolised by the cruise lines and there is no other way to get the tickets. RIP OFF

    (1)
  • Roy A.

It's cool. But I think it'd be more fun to walk up the mount yourself if you don't mind a 1hr hike. The restaurant on the mount sells basic, economical food.

  • Michael C.

Everyone that I know who has visted Juneau said they had a good time visiting Mt. Roberts, so I decided to check it out. To get to the park area you first need to take the tramway. I do not recommend going there in the morning when multiple cruise ships are in the terminal. You will be waiting an hour to get to the top. I went later in the afternoon and found that the line died down. It still took 30 minutes for us to get to the top. Anyways, once on the top, you get an awesome view of the port. The gift shop was ok. Lots of overpriced souvenirs, which you can get in downtown for almost half the price. The nature center was cool. They had the trail map, some animal foot prints, and some pelts too. Lots of interaction for kids. There is a trail that is not too strenuous. There are many breathtaking views of the melting glaciers, views of downtown. views of the port, and of the Tongass Rainforest. Be sure to wear mosquito repellent because there are many of them on the trail. Last there is a restaurant and a movie theater which they show about the local Tlingit Natives. If it is a hot day you might want to skip the movie because the theater has no A/C and it does get hot inside.

  • Junglist S.

Expensive, but a pretty cool tram ride. The whole thing is one long suspended wire, kinda scary. Great views. At the top is food, tourist shops, and a beautiful bald eagle that was blind in one eye because some @#$@! hunter took a potshot at it. Donate some money when you stop by there! There's quite a few hiking trails that are very nice, definitely spend some time there. After you take the tram back down, remember you can ride it again on your same ticket!

  • Rachel S.

I'm a little sad about the stretches of bare mud on the side of Mount Roberts where there used to be vegetation, but--the tram is awful fun. When I rode it the conductor-guy (is it a conductor, on a cable car?) seemed to want to give more Interesting Facts about the Tramway than the journey was really long enough to contain, so he just talked really really really fast. Which was okay, I guess. It was still possible to understand him. If your time in Juneau is limited, as mine always is, the tram gets you halfway up Mount Roberts, which gives you a much better chance of getting to the top before you have to come rushing back down again.

    (4)
  • Dana S.

Some of the stuff here is good and some of it is meh. It's a nice place to eat if you're up there already, though. The seafood quesadilla is really really good.

Not inexpensive but a fantastic view!

    (4)
  • Melissa C.

This was an awesome, inexpensive thing to do while in Juneau on a cruise. The views were amazing and there are several trails at the top of the tramway. There is also a restaurant at the top that sells beer and decent, if a bit overpriced, food (can't blame the prices though, I mean, where's the competition when you're on top of a mountain?).
