Try the damn good sandwich. That's it. It is what it claims. What more do you want?

This place is ok. It is conveniently located and they have good (huge)sandwiches. However, the one thing I hated was their side pasta. They do not make any substitutions and my boyfriend and I hated their horseradish pasta. If they had more options, I may go back.

love love love Sweet Basil. Simon and Tanya are great! best cake anywhere, yummy brownies. the soups are wonderful, the bf and I used to go in just for them. they have great fish specials in the summer, so check the board. the pork sandwich is "darn good", salads also a good bet. and try a smoothie/juice. the tummy tamer (with ginger) has worked for me in the past.

I came here in a weekday, just at the tail end of the lunch rush, around 12:30. There were still a few tables open so I took a seat. The only waitress came within 3 min, but I wasn't ready yet. She had about 10 other tables and was doing awesome at getting to everyone and cleaning tables! I ordered the special which was reindeer sausage, onion, tomato, and Monterey Jack on focaccia with a sriracha aioli. It was very tastey, but EXTREMELY messy. This is the reason for 3 stars instead of 4. The flora ours were good, but it's hard to enjoy when all the sandwich innards are oozing out of every corner and you end up eating it one layer at a time or with sauce covered hands. Also, the pasta side that came with it had way too much dressing. The flavors are good and fresh, but they just need a few refinements. They also have at least 10 treats in their display case. The cookies were pretty good, it I've had better. The apple pecan scone was SUPER delish. I'll probably be back, but not for another sandwich, maybe I'll try their wraps or pasta.

The salad tossed with their unbelievable dressing is the best salad I have ever had. I spent a few months in Anchorage this winter and I think Sweet Basil Cafe has my favorite food. The bread, is yummy too and just try to walk past the deserts! Each item is prepared with top ingredients and I enjoyed every dish I had. Yum.

A+++ The Moose pass salad was the best salad I've had in anchorage and I've had salads for lunch for the last 4 weeks. The Sun dried tomatos and olives were a bonus treat. All the vegetables were very fresh, lettuce was crispy and all ingredients were fresh. I do t know if the owner does all the shopping but the quality of the food they serve shows they take pride in the food. Chicken tika masala and rice soup was awesome. Only down side was that it got very busy and the restaurant was full, but we can see why. Be sure to try the Sweet basil bread.

This place never let us down in good coffee and fresh food. The main problems with it is the size and because of the size, the lack of room during tourist season. The lines can get pretty long, but it is well worth the wait. The service is as good as can be expected for such a busy, small place. Everything is fresh and delicious and they take pride in their work. It is a great place to check out--plus you can always get your food to go and sit out in the park to enjoy the sun.

I went here for lunch today for the first time and am ashamed that I have driven by and passed up going here for the 10 years I worked in midtown. Sweet Basil does a lot of catering which is how I think the word of mouth gets out about them because you don't see a lot of advertising for Sweet Basil. We showed up a quarter after noon and there was only one other couple there. We sat down and were attended on almost immediately. Menus were at the table and being a cold, rainy day I opted for a hearty pasta dish, the creamy parmesean pasta with mushrooms and chicken for $13. My dining companion had a 1/2 order or the Damn Good sandwich and had a cup of soup and a side of pasta salad. The pasta in my dish came from the Alaska Pasta Company and was deliciously fresh and tender. The creamy sauce was very tasty especially with the chicken a mushrooms. For $13 it was quite a large entree and more than enough for two people and came with a few slices of Sweet Basil's signature bread, which was also delicious. I had to take home my leftovers. My friend's half sandwich was huge and was piled with roast beef, avocado and tomato. He has been a huge fan of Sweet Basil for years. After we were done we picked up a couple desserts from their case, which look amazing and I can't wait to dig in once some room frees up in my stomach. This is just plain good food cooked with care and at a great value. My friend said that he always wonders why this place isn't always packed full of people. Now that I have finally eaten here, I wonder that, too. About a dozen more diners showed up in a steady flow in the time we had lunch. If you're in midtown, you should definitely make Sweet Basil Cafe one of your regular lunch stops.

A nice lunch before heading home. Good sandwiches and sweet waitresses helping their mom out in the kitchen. If you are in a rush, don't stop by but if you can sit and enjoy some company, worth the time.

I ordered the carrot/orange juice to go and the pulled pork with rice wrap. I didn't want the added carbs with the wrap, so the cook/owner was kind enough to put it on a plate of fresh greens. Not wilting greens, but the real stuff. It was fast, too. Both the juice and the pork on a plate was delicious! I savored every bite of that pork. It's small inside, and parking is limited, but it's very much worth it!

My husband and I ate here for a quick small meal. It was quick, but the food was huge! A wrap can easily feed 2 ppl. I had a half sandwhich and was stuffed. Food was duelicious! Only reason not 5 stars is the atmosphere isn't top notch but for the food and low prices this is definitely a great 'hole in the wall'.

How is this place not more popular? I've been here once a week for three weeks straight. Everything I've had has been amazing - the pot pie, the sandwiches, the soups, the salad - this place hasn't struck out once. My favorite thing about this place is the fresh juice - carrots, ginger, oranges, beets, cucumbers, etc - any fresh veggie or fruit, in any combination - one word, AMAZING. Super friendly owners, literally a mom and pop shop. I never mind giving this place my business.

I had never gone here while the cafe was downtown, and on a friend's suggestion, we finally had a lunch here. It was in the late afternoon, long after when I assume the lunch rush would have been. It's light and airy, seat-yourself sort of place. Lots of windows and sunshine, which was nice. It's kind of weird; I think you sit down, order there, then pay after? The staff was friendly enough, but only came by once after we got our food, and never had water glasses refilled. Maybe it was something we had to request, instead of them coming by to check up every 5 minutes like an obnoxious TGIF's server? The food was pretty awesome. I had a half sandwich/cup of soup combo, and for the price, it was a great deal. The sandwich half was so huge and mountainous, I couldn't actually bite it whole. It sort of collapsed upon itself on my plate, so I just dug in with my hands. It was full of fresh veg and hummus, and that sweet basil bread was incredible. The asparagus and mushroom soup was good, though a cream-based soup makes me expect more viscosity. The side pasta salad was alright, but I wished it had more of a kick to its taste. I sampled my friend's juice; it was better than what I can get out of my Jack Lalanne juicer. I bought a white-chocolate cranberry cookie, which was a little too crunchy (or stale?), and didn't have a whole lot of the expected flavoring, but I liked that they used chunks of white chocolate instead of those crappy, waxy chocolate chips. They had a whole case of amazing-looking pastries, which had my companions and I practically slobbering all over the display case. They had great-looking truffles that were less expensive (and bigger) than those that you'd find at Modern Dweller's. For my first time coming here, it left a good impression. I'm sure I'll be coming back again.

I'm sure this is a great place normally, and the one time I went it was an off day. A friend and I came in for lunch during the middle of June, and became excited about the meal due to the eclectic decor, beautiful pastries in the glass case, and the wonderful smells permeating the eating area. We sat at a table and noticed the dirty table tops, grungy salt and pepper shakers, and dirty silverware. We were each given an 8oz glass of water, and would have sipped a little more slowly if we'd known it would be our last. I ordered the spinach pasta with shrimp, while my friend ordered some type of veggie sandwich. Only memorable part of the meal was that the sandwich was missing the avocado as mentioned in the menu, and of the pasta was that it was green. Does have potential, and as I said before, it could have been an off day. I may try this place again just because I have heard good reviews from friends...

Great wraps for a hungry guy and the pasta salad was very good too. I got the lunches to go but it seemed like a good place to eat. I write more the next time I get up that way. Great and friendly staff.

I've been eating their Piper Club for ten years. I don't even order anything else because it is that good. Service may lack if you dine-in, seems like a high turnover for the wait staff... But who cares, just call it in. Best sandwich EVER.

We actually didn't get to try the food. We sat down at a table, which was never wiped off. They were going to leave the old silverware with us. They helped three other tables before us, so we finally just walked out.
