LOUD. That's the first word that comes to mind when I think about Flattop (the pizza place, not the mountain). I don't really mind, I like how this place seems to have an upbeat energy, even late at night...in the winter...on a weekday. I also appreciate that they are often open late and still serving food. In Anchorage, if you want to eat non-fast-food after 10pm, you're pretty much hosed. The pizza: it's alright. Nothing really to complain about, but nothing outstanding about it either. The tap selection is above average. Come here if you want to play pool or eat late.

I always have fun here. It's a great spot to start your night and play a game of pool. They keep the kitchen open late, which is clutch when you're hungry after a night on the town. You can order pizza by the slice and each slice is HUGE (about a quarter of a pie). Flattop is also a great place to watch a game, as they have a bunch of TVs and its not known for being a sports bar so you can typically get a good seat. I would give them 5 stars, however the bartenders tend to be slow with taking drink orders, even when its not crowded.

In short. Sub-par service. Good menu if it could be implemented. Note though kitchen staff was in training. I walked in here on a Saturday night. Place was not crowded. I was one of maybe six at the bar. No greeting from the bar tender. After five min. of waiting had to flag down for a menu. Then finally a drink order. Then after 10 minutes "oh you want food". Menu looks good. Creative pizza and more. By the time my veg and hummus pie came out i could have ordered from delivery eaten and left. They apologized for the wait but i told em the veg on the pie are raw not roasted. I hope this place makes it. There is a lot of potential.

So I stopped by this wonderful location one day while I was working so we took something to go....I had heard great things about this place and one was on point! First of all the service was fantastic & the atmosphere was cool. We ordered a 1/2 & 1/2 pizza and it was just blah....kind of soggy, and not anything to go back for. We also got the "knots" they were as hard as a rock totally inedible and only three knots so again nothing to go back for. All in all they get points for service and atmosphere but zero points for the food.

Good pizza. Casual clean atmosphere. Friendly service. Three pool tables and sports TV. More a later night hangout.

I stopped in on a whim for a late evening drink with a friend, I hadn't been yet and wanted to check it out. The bartender was friendly and enjoyed joking around with us. He gave us a little insight on how the place was in the summer, which I guess is packed with tourists, I'm interested in checking out the scene come tourist season for some good people watching, based on the stories he told us. All in all, they have a pretty good selection of beers and mixed drinks. I liked my evening adventure so much I came back a couple days later for lunch. Their lunch special is actually an AMAZINGLY good deal, for how much food you get! $4.50 for one massive slice of pizza with up to 5 toppings (sauce and the basic layer of cheese do NOT count towards your five)! They also have a $4.50 lunch special on their house green salad, again a pretty good size salad for the cost! I'm not holding the slow lunch service to them this time, they only had one server and it got really busy really fast. When she finally got around to us she said it was pretty unexpected lunch rush. I was also watching the Barcelona v Man City game on one of the TVs, so it didn't the business and her being overwhelmed didn't really bother me at all!

I've come a few times now and do like this establishment for pool and eats while downtown. A couple of times I've paid $22 for playing pool and recently paid $48, with little increase of time. Not sure if it was a price hike or what, but ouch! My friend usually gets the pizza rolls and I the hummous. I have to say I harbor an extreme dislike for black olives and do not understand why this place can't get kalamata as a side as Humpy's does around the corner. One downside to playing here are the barhoppers who come and go in waves and make playing difficult; stop playing pool at 10PM and you should be fine. Another thing to note is that the pool tab is attached to the overall bar tab. They should really keep the pool tab separate from the food and drink. Anyways, it's close to my friend's house so we come here when we want to kill time and catch up. Will come again but will watch the pool tab and time, as well as ask for kalamata olives instead of black next time I order hummous.

Best pizza in Anchorage by far! Amazing atmosphere, nice prices, hip/cool aesthetic, and great food.

When flat top first opened, I took the two coolest cats I know - Father #1, and Father #2. It was Father's day - I did some group deal where we got 2 pool tables for 2 hours, 4 large pizzas and a few pitchers of beer, which easily covered both families in a large party of 10+. The fathers happily gulped beer, sparred at pool, and we loved the more eclectic pizza choices. Service was prompt and friendly. Since, I have enjoyed a random drink or two at the bar, playing a few rounds of pool and overall, appreciated the extended business venture of Humpy's. Some complaints have been aimed at the pizza, but I really like it! I loved the Big Kahuna, very savory and sweet. I also love Powerline Pass - an uber meat lovers pizza, but they balance the pie well, with red tomato sauce and spicy/salty meats. The crust of powerline pass was brushed with roasted garlic oil and I lingered on every bite. Skip the hummus, I wasn't too impressed. They seem to focus on various event nights to draw certain crowds (so beware if you are a 30-professional something not keen on college night). They participate in Tuesday pub runs and in 2014 had Game of Thrones nights that have sadly ended entering season 5. Ambiance is industrial driven - tall, exposed ceiling structure, polished concrete, lots of glass. all in all, a fun place for Alaskan friends to meet with good food to boot.

I appreciate that this place is clean for a pseudo-sports bar. I'm the type of girl who won't eat her pizza crust if it's not great. That being said, I love the crust here. There was one bad incident when ordering the 'Park Strip' pizza; the menu states roasted garlic, but they used fresh pressed, uncooked garlic and it was very strong. I had to scrape off quite a bit to make it edible (and that's a lot, because I love garlic). Other pizza's I've tried have been excellent. Flattop also seems a little understaffed at lunch and has an awkward layout for it's bartenders who have to walk around the entire bar to take orders and drop off food and beer. It makes the order and wait time a bit long, but they make up for it with good beers on tap.

Definitely a college bar (albeit cleaner and nicer than most), but we enjoyed the epic local pro snowboarder video they were playing on the numerous flat screens while we had beers. I lost my hat the big before at Humpy's and the bouncer at Flattop works both and remembered me and had found my hat. That saved the end of my trip, because it was our last night and I was really sad about it. We only had some seasonal amber ales, but the food the people at the bar next to us looked amazing. This place is totally roomy and a great hangout if you have a couple friends with different interests (ie numerous pool tables and shuffle board). On the main strip, this bar is in the thick of things, right between Sub Zero Bistro and Humpy's). If you are having a night out on the town, you should really stop in here.

The place has a cool set-up. It's a sports bar/restaurant. I was really disappointed with their level of service. The service was mediocre. I felt that our waitress wasn't really attentive to our table as far as clearing empty plates and filling our drinks. I had the their house salad and berry crisp dessert, both were okay. The company I was with ordered sandwiches or subs and it took a while to prepare. When we asked about the delay, she told us that it takes about 27 minutes to prepare. Might have been helpful to inform customers beforehand if something takes a while to prepare. This place has a lot of potential, but need to work on customer service.

Overall, this is a great place to grab a drink and some pizza. Prices are reasonable and they even offer packages that include beer, pizza and pool. Doesn't get really packed here so its always easy to find an open table to sit down or even a pool table to play. Pizza is pretty good here. Fairly large and very tasty. Beer & wine is priced just right as well.

Sitting at the way less than half-full bar. Bartender is clueless. She's brought my tea and taken my pizza order. Had to point at pizza I wanted since the proper pronunciation on Margherita was beyond her understanding. Didn't bring sweetener with tea, or even ask if I wanted it, random person passing behind bar brought it. Didn't refill my tea without me asking (twice). When she's not busy ignoring me, stands by the beer taps with her arms crossed looking like she would rather be anywhere but here. Keeps putting on and taking off gloves BUT NOT DOING ANYTHING! However, the pizza was amazing. The right balance of toppings and sauce. Just sad that the person representing the company killed what could have been a wonderful experience.

As a downtown office who eats out nearly every day, we keep on saying that we're never going back to Flattop. But eventually, we end up back there when somehow we collectively forget how terrible the service is. I'm writing myself a post-it note right now to stick on my monitor. Flattop could be great. It's a nice atmosphere and even better location. But so far, every experience at Flattop has been a sail through the doldrums of orders not taken until waitstaff are flagged down, excessive wait times to get food, and messed up orders with missing entrees or pizza toppings once it arrives. It's happened so often during lunchtimes that I'm surprised there are people on yelp having good experiences there. We have complained, but never once have we received an acknowledgement of "we screwed up" from a waitperson much less a manager. Instead it's more like, "your order must not have gone through, do you still want it?" (Reply: "No thanks, we'll go grab a slice-to-go from Uncle Joe's".) A friend likes to recall the time we waited 20 minutes in an empty Flattop for them to tell us they were out of the brownie ice cream sandwiches we ordered. Summary conclusion from 6 locals and many of their friends : Flattop is a decent place to grab a beer. The food is middling. The lunchtime service is terrible. If you want pizza downtown, try Fat Ptarmigan (good food, pricey-side) or Uncle Joe's (middle-of-the-road food, cheap).

I only chose 4 because it took half an hour to get two pizzas. Some good things about this place is that their pizza is really good and the beer/pool really nice. One bad thing is that it is expensive. Don't use the jukebox it steals your money and does't play your song when football is on the TV.

  • Rachel S.

I thought their pizza was SUPER GOOD. Regular crust cooked perfectly!! Their beers are good and they have a nice atmosphere. There are 3 pool tables that run along the length of the place, but we didn't have any trouble with seating. We went around 8:30, so I'm not sure what the scene is like later at night.

Definitely swing by Flattop if you're downtown. The pizza is perfect -- crispy crusts, delicious toppings. The salads are top-notch too. Prices are more reasonable than you'll find in a lot of places, and it was great to stop by for a beer, too. Highly recommended. The only downside was that when our group arrived for lunch, things were a tad chaotic. Our table got great service, but the table next to us arrived before we did and didn't have their orders taken until well after we'd been brought our food. I think some of the folks from that table left in frustration.

First time here. Very causal with pool tables, large selection of beer (of course being associated with Humpys). Staff friendly, pizza slow to come out. The pizza was....just ok. Nothing really stands out and may come back if I ever want to play a game of pool.

I personally liked flat top- I can't really say MUCH about their food because the only thing that i've tried is their bbq chicken pizza. After a few drinks in me, the pizza tasted really good but i honestly can't remember much. I would assume that people mainly go there for the bar scene, pool tables and window walls! Yes, i love that their walls are WINDOWS! that's definitely something new here but I wonder what it will be like during the winter time................ :) I give it three stars for now only because i haven't tried much of their food yet. Then again, im not sure if id go back there to eat.. probably just drink. Cheers!

I attended a private party here and was very excited to check this place out. I was impressed with the service they provided our large party. So many places fail at handling large groups. They had more than enough staff to man the bar, replenish the buffet, and clear our plates. This was also one of the most affordable options for group gatherings. They had a nice salad bar, hummus and pita, wings, and pizza for us to enjoy. The salad was crisp, with lots of toppings to make it your own. The hummus left a little to be desired but was a nice addition to the salad bar. My only complaint was that they only provided one platter of wings, so several people missed out. The wings weren't great but not awful either, they could've used a little more sauce. The pizzas kept coming out of the kitchen until our party began to wind down. I couldn't believe how many pizzas they were pumping out of the kitchen! The pizza was not the greatest but certainly not the worst I've had in town. The crust was decent but the center of the pie was a little soggy. Overall, it was great bar food. I can't wait to come back and play a round of pool with friends. Honestly, it's some of the better service I've had downtown.

I spent a lot of time watching the World Cup here like, three times or more per week for a month because my whole office did so we got extended lunches. I really want to like Flattop, but the service is SOOOO bad. It's painfully slow, and it seems like a lot of the servers just don't know what's going on. Like bringing out your salad without having brought you silverware. Twice I ordered a slice of pizza and a salad and got one but not the other. And by slow, I mean slow. Not having my pizza, which is on a premade cheese pizza you customize, btw, after 30-45 minutes. This would have been understandable for the US games which packed people in, but it seems this would have been an obvious opportunity to bring more workers in, but alas, super slow was simply the norm. So as for the food: the lunch combo for a slice and salad for $9 used to be a good deal. After going for a couple weeks the salad shrank quite a bit and it lost the economic value. Needless to say, I didn't return after the World Cup ended.

This place has an excellent location, good food, and a good beer selection. However that's about where it ends. The layout is terrible with people playing pool all over. The service is slow to say the least: you often have to go tot he bar to remind them you are there (maybe they want less of a tip). The clientele is definitely a bar crowd, but maybe you're interested in that. If you're looking for a bar more than a restaurant, this might be your spot.

I heard that they make in house the best ice cream sammich. So screw the beer and pizza... I want dessert with my flattop ale! Sadly the first night the kitchen was already closed... Oh well bartender... Raspberry tonic please and made me a stiff drink... Off to play pool I go... And not very good but I plays anyways with my friends until closing... Met Pete the manager, he's down with the Spurs and likes country music... I taught my friend how to two step around the bar...yah sadly this Alaskan has gone country on yah. Friday night... My friend and I had one mission and one mission only Ice Cream Sammy! We ordered one that was just made and put into the freezer which was fine it tasted sinfully delicious. Juke box and pool Bathrooms shared with SubZero no bueno if your girls lol... Only two stalls up in there. May be a good place for sports watching, they have several flat screens. Lots of eyecandy for me ;) PS. Olivia the cocktail/bartender is smokin'

I am officially a regular here. The classic crust create your own is my favorite! Along with a glass or two of the Alaskan Amber beer!

Great sports bar downtown. Staff and bartenders are super friendly and pricing is reasonable Crowd is young, sort bar where you can strike up a conversation with strangers comfortably. Order the Anchortown Pizza one of my favorite pizzas in town.

In town on a work trip and thought this would be a great spot to have a beer, some grub and watch the World Cup after a long day of work. I do like the ambiance. Wide open space with pool tables in the back. A nice long bar and a lot of small tables to eat/drink at. This place could be so much better if they actually had average service. But this place gave sub-par a new meaning. Everyone seemed slow and didn't really care about the patrons. Women's World Cup was more important apparently. Took about 45 minutes to get a sandwich (at the 15 minute point when they brought my co-worker's salad they said my sandwich would be "right up." I guess right up means another 30 minutes. They didn't come around to ask if I wanted another beer until after I was already done with my meal and I had been sitting there with an empty glass for about 10-15 minutes. Beerless in Alaska is not what I want to be.

Their pizza was terrible, topping were really dry and tasteless. The set up is great. Service is much better in the evening than in the day time. Overall a good place for drinks, but just like Humpy's food quality is mediocre at best.

I've posted the same review on Urbanspoon, but some people use Yelp! and Urbanspoon like me, so I thought I'd say the same thing: What makes a great "pizza"? I asked this question, and the answer is very subjective. Some people like deep dish, some like thin crust. Others, on the other hand, prefer "pan pizza". In all my worldly travels, the "best pizza" is the pizza you are craving at that moment. I went to Flat Top with no expectations, only knowing that they were an offshoot of Humpy's. Humpy's is a downtown Anchorage institution, and appeals to both seasonal tourists and locals. It's actually an interesting mix. My visit was for lunch, and I was impressed that they offered a "slice & salad" special. The "slice" could be customized with up to 5 toppings for a very reasonable price with a huge salad. Sitting at the bar, I opted to keep it simple and ordered a pepperoni and mushroom slice, and opted out of the salad (as it looked huge). It arrived within 15 minutes or so. The crust was what many would consider "thin" and it had enough yeast and cook on it to hold the ingredients, which were very high quality. The sauce was excellent for a thin crust, not to much or too little. It was slightly tangy with hints of fresh herbs. The cheese was done right, the pepperoni sliced very thin. The mushrooms were plentiful and not soggy. Overall, I found my "custom slice" very enjoyable. The atmosphere invites a very large late night crowd, and I hope they decide to offer take-out/delivery! The pool table setup is unique to downtown, and I think offering growler fills would really make this spot "pop". If my pepperoni and mushroom slice is any representation of one of their whole specialty pizzas, the Anchorage pizza scene should be put on notice!

Another update... Looks like the door staff has changed. That said the bar staff on this trip was epic! Very nice and helpful. Updating this review...good pizza and good drink

Stopped in and had some beer and a pepperoni pizza. The waitress was very nice. She switched out my yucky beer for a good one and didn't charge me. Pizza was okay but nothing special. Nice vibe, people playing pool, happy place. I'd return but not for the pizza. Oh and the women's restroom was awesome! Black walls with white dots, pedestal sink....really nice. And clean.

Hubs and I stopped in here while in town...looking for some decent pizza and a place to chill. Found what we wanted! The pizza was good (service was a bit slow, but we were in no hurry), and we liked the atmosphere. We'll be back the next time we're in town.

  • Cerena G.

We came here to play pool, which we found out is $5 for an hour from a certain time till 7 and after that it is $15/hour, which is priceyyyyy! If you come at 6:45 this doesnt mean you have an hour and it is $5 (so lame)... they prorate you here. This place is roomy and has good service. The drinks were good. Didn't have any pizza

  • Alison B.

Service was pretty good, but the trailhead pizza was awesome! Hummus base with grilled veggies?! Heck yeah! Would def eat there again.

  • E R.

We tried this place out last night for dinner. They have a good beer selection, as one would expect from a Humpy's establishment, and the pepperoni rolls were delicious. The pizza, however, is not great and is absolutely not New York-style, which is how it's being advertised. The crust is similar to cardboard, in both texture and (lack of) flavor, and is structurally weak enough that you need to eat your first few bites with a knife and fork. I'll probably go back for beer and snacks, but it won't be making it into my regular dinner rotation. Other points: the service is fast and friendly; the chairs are moderately uncomfortable; the large open doors are good if you like fresh air, but bad if you're trying to escape mosquitoes.

Flat top is a semi new place to anchorage .. Nice open area with pool tables and TVs all around. Full bar and a decent menu. Ordered a BBQ chicken pizza , the crust was very thin , that flavor tasted alright. It's a good area to go with a group of friends or so for pizza and pool.

First time eating here we had the Alehouse Deluxe pizza was amazing, great atmosphere for date night with the hubby. The pizza was a little slow to come out but once we got it I was happy. Thank you for making our date night a good one. We will be returning and letting everyone else know about you.

  • Me Y.

Came here in hopes of a yummy pizza on gluten free crust. Sadly they don't have a gluten free crust. Had to settle for the Merrill Field Salad with chicken and the Buffalo Blue Cheese dressing. Huge salad with plenty of chicken and good dressing. If I happen to be downtown I might stop by but $5 parking and no gluten free crust will keep me going to the Moose instead. The bank of cold windows where all the seating is makes for a chilly lunch and I really don't see the purpose of 4 pool tables jammed into such a small space. Get rid of 3 and put some tables in there away from the freezing windows.

    (3)
  • Michelle D.

I was extremely disappointed. I thought the prices were terrible. I got a medium pizza which was the size of a personal pizza (6 very small slivers), cost me $12. The crust was also a let down it was very hard and floury. I would not recommend this place to any of my friends. And I do not plan on returning. I am sticking to Moose's Tooth for sure!!!!!!!
